Hiking Sicily’s Mount Etna

By Jessica Infantino Trumble

One thing I definitely wanted to do when planning my trip to Sicily was visit Mount Etna. Located on the western side of the island about 20 miles north of Catania, it’s the largest active volcano in Europe and one of the most active in the world among the ranks of others including Kilauea in Hawaii, Mount Mayon in the Philippines and Grímsvötn in Iceland. What makes Etna especially interesting is that it’s been in an almost constant state of activity for almost 600,000 years. Most notably, in 1669 a catastrophic eruption that lasted 3 months engulfed Catania and 11 other towns, forever leaving its mark on the region. More recently, the nearly 230-square mile area surrounding Mount Etna became a protected park in 1987 and it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013.

I

knew I wanted to book a guided tour but was overwhelmed by the number of options and varying pricing online. I found a detailed map of Mount Etna and literally had to make a spreadsheet to compare what each individual company and tour would cover. Going to the summit was definitely on our wish list because, how often does one have the opportunity to climb to the top of a volcano (when in Sicily, right)? From here we boarded a 4×4 bus through a lunar like landscape of black lava rocks to Torre del Filosofo at 2,920 metres. This is the highest point that visitors are able to go without a guide, which is where you’ll find some pretty spectacular views and extinct craters to explore. Although, we were there to see more and so our trek to

the summit began. Marco explained that the rocks we were walking on were only about a year old from an eruption that took place in the spring of 2017. In fact, Etna is always changing, which is why I assume he never gets tired of leading tours after nearly 20 years as a guide and climbing the mountain since he was 3 years old with his father who was also a guide. As our uphill hike continued, the temperature became noticeably colder. Believe it or not, Mount Etna gets a decent amount of snow in the winter, making the area a prime ski destination in Sicily. Even in early September we were instructed to bring layers (including a wind-resistant jacket, gloves, etc.), which we donned as we climbed higher, along with a helmet in case any loose rocks were to get picked up by the wind. After about an hour or so we arrived at the rim of the main crater, Bocca Nuova. Mount Etna actually has 4 active craters but only 3 cones – Bocca Nuova and Voragine, Northeast and Southeast, the latter being the most active. Here at 3,330 metres, steam clouds billowed

from the 400-metre wide hole, creating a sort of post-apocalyptic scene around us. It was a surreal experience to say the least, one that no words or photos could do justice to. After spending some time at the top, it was time to start making our way down. Marco showed us how to dig our heels into the loose lightweight lava stones and sort of glide down the side of the hill as if we were skiing on fresh powder. When we reached the bottom of the valley we stopped for a lunch break, watching other groups in the distance – some with as many as 40 people – make their way to the top of the volcano. Getting an early start had its advantages as we were actually the first group to hike up to the summit that day. Thereafter we visited several other areas around Etna including the ancient Valle del Bove and the site of the 2002 eruption near the area where the 4×4 vehicles dropped us off earlier in the day. As we stood on the edge of the extinct crater, we heard an explosion behind us and quickly turned to see smoke and rock debris flying in the air from the Southeast crater. There were a few other small eruptions from the same crater that day that we also witnessed as we made our descent (see the photo with the bus on previous page). We took the cable car back down to Rifugio Sapienza and stopped for another coffee break (or aperitivo and cake, in our case) before

driving a short way to explore the inside of an old lava tube. The last stop of our day was in the town of Zafferna for a tasting of local products that were also available for purchase (honey, olive oil, pesto, wine and more). The fertile soil around Etna makes the area an agricultural treasure trove and we also learned that old lava stone is mined in quarries and used for local construction. Talk about turning lemons into lemonade, or rather limoncello!! We were dropped back at our hotel around 5pm, marking the end of a long but fascinating day. Marco was the perfect guide – super knowledgeable and laid back, creating an enjoyable and memorable experience for our small group. We definitely saw more than we expected and I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Sicily.

Mount Etna By Numbers n Oldest active volcano in the world dating back more than 550,000 years n Maximum height is 3,328 metres at the summit n First recorded eruption was in 1,500 B.C. with 190 eruptions over the past 3,500 years n Last major eruption was in April 2017 n Currently 4 active craters at the summit and more than 300 extinct craters on the site n Temperature of lava inside the volcano is 1000 degrees Celsius n More than 200 lava tunnels in the area surrounding Mount Etna

Nerja Pale Voice Choir A group of twenty regulars from the Chapel Bar in Nerja held their now annual tour of town centre bars on the Saturday before Christmas, to raise funds for the local foodbank. What they lacked in musical ability, the Pale Voice Choir more than made up for with enthusiasm as they belted out all the favourite carols. Favourite song of all was the Twelve Days of Christmas, with solo parts for many of the performers, and at each venue the bar owner was invited to sing the line 'Five Gold Rings'. The generosity of the customers along the way - of all nationalities - was reflected in the final total collected in excess of E400.

12 Lesser-known traffic fines in Spain

We’ve been investigating some of the ways vehicle owners can be fined, even when not driving. Take a look at our list of lesser-known traffic fines in Spain, you might be surprised by some of them.

But you also need insurance even if you don’t use your car temporarily. This could be the case if you’ve decided to scrap or sell your car but still own it and, as you no longer use it, decide not to renew the policy. In this case the fine could be around 800 euros. Tip: Vehicle insurance policies in Spain have a one-month grace period. If it runs out at the end of one month your vehicle is automatically covered until the end of the following month.

4. Dirty / manipulated number plates Get 80 euros ready for the fine if your number plates are illegible, even if your car is parked. by MoneySaverSpain.com

Spanish driving licences come with 12 points, however you may find out you have 15 points on yours. How? If during 3 years you don’t commit any offence you get an extra 2 points, after another 3 years without losing points you get an extra one.

And don’t even think about adding a sticker on a number plate, anything that interferes with the letters and numbers could result in a fine too.

5. Teaching someone to drive Forget about giving your kids extra lessons to save on driving school fees, it’s not legal in Spain. If caught, the owner of the vehicle will be fined.

1. Filling the tank incorrectly

6. Not notifying your new address to the DGT (Spanish Traffic Office)

Keeping the headlights on, the car running or using your mobile whilst filling up at the petrol station could mean a 200 euro fine and 3 points off your licence.

This one is easy to avoid. If you change address just go along to your nearest DGT office (most have an online appointment system) with the following papers:

But did you also know you can’t have your radio/CD/USB on? Remember to switch the music off when you stop the car.

Proof of address (padrón certificate from the Ayuntamiento).

2. Washing / fixing your car in the street Fines ranging from 30 euro to 3000 euro depending where you live, is what you’ll have to pay if you wash your car in the street. Although this prohibition does not apply to your private land (such as a driveway), if you are using the space as a “business” (fixing other people’s cars) you could be fined too.

3. No insurance

Driving Licence Vehicle “ficha técnica” (tech specs document)

7. Throwing things out of the window It’s not just a question of litter, a cigarette stub thrown out of a car window means a 200 euro fine and 4 points lost due to the high fire risk in most areas in Spain. For other items, such as a can or plastic bottle, it’s an 80 euro fine.

8. Parking on the beach

Obvious right? If you have no car insurance and you’re caught not only will you be fined but your car will probably be Depending on the region, this prohibition may also include beach access areas with fines from 90 euro. impounded. 12 THE MARKET PLACE

If you think it’s worth risking for 90 euro, think twice. In some areas of Almeria the fine is over 30,000 euros!

9. Eating / drinking / putting make up on / reading According to the law, whilst driving all these actions are considered to be a distraction and the driver can be fined up to 100 euros. This is also the case even if you’re just waiting for the traffic lights to turn green; a fine of 200 euros and 2 points if you decide to take advantage of that “lost” minute or two at the lights.

10. Not wearing a hi-vis jacket If your car is involved in an accident, or you have to stop due to a breakdown, any occupant must put on a hi-vis jacket BEFORE getting out of the car.

If it’s the driver who gets out without the hi-vis jacket on, he/she will not only be fined 200 euros but will also get 3 points off their licence. Additionally you can be fined 200 euros if you don’t put out the mandatory reflective triangles.

11. Driving with your hand/arm out of the window Not so common nowadays as most people have air con and don’t bother putting down the windows. Even so, drivers are supposed to maintain their arms in a correct position, otherwise there’s a 100 euro fine. There’s also a fine if you’re seen arguing whilst driving, biting your nails or kissing your passenger! The idea is that your eyes, and other senses, should be on the road at all times.

12. Having the music too loud Some areas are designated “quiet zones”, for example near a hospital. Having the music too loud in your car could mean a fine of between 80-100 euros. And if you decide to annoy a neighbourhood with your music, the fine could be as high as 2400 euros.

MSS Tips Go to moneysaverspain.com to read our old post on Traffic Fines in Spain. Most fines will be reduced by 50% for prompt payment. Watch out for traffic fines in the town where you live. In Spain over half of fines are given out by the local police and the money goes directly to the municipal coffers. We’re not implying that towns do this to have more cash available (wink, wink!), but it’s something to think about.

What is the best insulation for walls? The insulation for walls is a very important consideration in any house. With good insulation, savings can be made by 30% on energy supplies, especially to keep the heat in during the winter and out in summer. Creating a home with pleasant temperatures to live in without having to use much heating reduces Co2 emissions and is better for the environment.

1. Mineral Insulation There are different types of insulation such as; mineral,

2 16 THE MARKET PLACE

synthetic or natural. The main mineral insulations are rock wool and fibreglass. Rock wool is made from molten volcanic rock. It is very resistant to heat and is good for interior walls and for facades providing they do not have direct contact with water. Rock wool is sold in rolls and is suitable for insulating under floors, walls and also as acoustic insulation. On the other hand fibreglass is made from molten sand and is suitable for insultating interior walls, false ceilings and under floors. It is also supplied in rolls or as a blanket. Fibre glass can also be used as an acoustic application in low densities.

2. Synthetic Insulation Synthetic insulation is slowly gaining ground in the battle for market percentage to insulate houses. There are different types such as; expanded polystyrene which is a very light material and very economical and easy to install. It is suitable to increase the thermal resistance of walls, floors, ceilings and facades. The main advantage of this over mineral wool is that it has a greater waterproof capacity, so it can be placed in outdoor situations. Another example is extruded polystyrene which is also waterproof and has a fairly large resistance to weight and deformation. These characteristics make it the most recommended material to be placed on facades and roofs, both on the outside and inside. This product is also used widely in areas with high humidity. continued on page 18

3. Ecological and Recycled Insulation With the environment worrying us more and more, it is not surprising that ecological and recycled insulations are coming into the market. Cork is a good example of this, it is 100% ecological, it is recyclable and it protects the environment whilst possessing a great insulating capacity. It can be used on walls, floors and it’s

3 durability is much greater than that of other insulators. It also protects the interiors from moisture and is hypoallergenic and can be on view because it looks like it is meant to be part of the interior.

What a silver day for the Arts Society Nerja On Tuesday 11th December The Arts Society Nerja, formerly NADFAS, celebrated a memorable day for its 25th Anniversary. Guests came from far and wide. The CEO of The Arts Society worldwide travelled from the UK to celebrate with Nerja and to conduct a 10km run from the Balcon de Europa uphill to the Nerja Caves and back (downhill!) in 1hr and 6 minutes. The Arts Society itself is celebrating its 50th year and Florian Schweizer is doing 50x10km runs at some of the 385 Societies with over 90,000 Members for arts charities. He also ran the 10km in Fuengirola where The Arts Society Costa del Sol is celebrating its 30th year and in Gibraltar. Well done Florian and in Nerja the funds raised are being used for the Society’s 2019 Charitable Project - SOS Aldeas Infantiles in El Palo (a UNESCO project) in conjunction with the philanthropic Jorge Rando Museum, Malaga. There was a well-deserved drink and nibbles with tasty festive mince pies for all courtesy of Blevins Franks after Florian had recovered. Later at 5pm the Mayor of Nerja, Rosa Arrabal and other civic dignitaries unveiled an amazing sculpture, “Nerja kisses the sea, the sea kisses Nerja” which had won its sculptress, Lieuwke Loth the 1st place at the Nerja 18 THE MARKET PLACE

Society’s 2017 Art Exhibition and which had been submitted to The Arts Society 50th Anniversary Exhibition in London. This sculpture gifted to Nerja in gratitude for it many years of collaboration with The Arts Society will hang prominently in the Cultural Centre (Casa Cultura) in Calle Granada. The well attended event was followed by December’s Lecture which fittingly was on a Spanish theme, “A history of art, power and passion, a memory of AL-Andalus.” One of the founding Members and past Chairman, Robert Kettel gave an introduction with an insight into the Society’s history. Then 70 Members and guests assembled at the Parador de Nerja in the very room where the first Nerja Decorative & Fine Arts lecture was given 25 years previously. They enjoyed Spanish music from a local amateur group Swingate included traditional Spanish Christmas songs and then an excellent Anniversary Dinner with good food, copious wine and with friends old and new. The guests included 4 past Chairmen, Florian from London, The Area Chairman Jo Ward, 2 Members

of the Arts Society Trustees Board Peter Kirridge and Jacquie Varley and old friends from other Societies down the coast. Chairman Helen Sijsling is now planning for the next 25 years of The Arts Society Nerja starting with a very interesting programme of lectures in 2019 covering a wide ranging and exciting look at “The Arts” accompanied by lecture topic related day and multi day trips and social events. Car News

by Martin Ward

Suzuki Jimny - First Driving Impressions, UK Press Event, Daventry It was back in 1998 when I had been at CAP for just over ten-years that I went on my first Suzuki Jimny launch. This was though the third generation of Jimny, as the original was launched eighteen years earlier in 1970. But the MK3 was the first to be called Jimny previous ones were called different names around the world.

I

n the UK we had SJ410 and SJ413, in Australia it was called the Sierra and all sorts of names. But in 1998 Suzuki decided to standardise the Jimny name, and so it still remains. The previous car hardly changed in 20 years, and has the longest production run of any modern car. Over 2.8 million Jimny’s have been sold worldwide, with more than 42,000 sold in the UK. The all-new Jimny is, believe it or not 30mm shorter than the 20 year old car, but is 45mm wider and 20mm higher. The current car looks small but the new one is even smaller, although looking at it, it does appear much larger. The extra width is welcome, and you do feel that extra space for shoulders. There is enough room (just) in the rear for two adults but the boot space is as expected, restricted. You can get three or four bags of supermarket shopping in there and then it's full. I doubt you would get a suitcase in it. But boot room is not necessarily the reason why people buy the Jimny. It is the one-andonly, small, lightweight and 4WD vehicle. This new Jimny retains its traditional ladder-frame chassis for optimum off-road performance. The body frame torsional is now 1.5-times higher than the current model which enhances on and off-road performance. We started the testing of the Jimny near 20 THE MARKET PLACE

Daventry and went through some very pretty small villages on country roads and dual-carriageways, on a whole variety of road conditions and surfaces, and it proved to handle them all very well. It went over the bumps well and was generally a fairly comfortable place to be, considering it is so small and has rugged underpinnings. The new Jimny is powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine, replacing the 1.3 that proved ultra-reliable. No doubt this new one will be just as good. It is quiet, and has more than enough power. This engine produces 101ps, a top speed of 90mph, but no 0-62mph figures are available yet. Suzuki have released the C02 figures for both NEDC and the new WLTP and show what big differences we can expect: NEDC 154g/ km – WLTP 178g/km. The Jimny is available with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. The Jimny is available in two trims: SZ4 and SZ5. The top model that we drove is packed full of goodies, including lane departure, hill hold and hill descent control, alarm, cruise control, drivers seat height adjuster, auto airconditioning, auto-headlights, heated door mirrors, heated front seats, 15-inch alloy wheels, satellite navigation, 3-spoke leather steering wheel, rear privacy glass, bluetooth integrated audio unit, and so the long list

goes on. After the on-road driving, we went to a very muddy off-road section, and after plenty of rain the conditions were pretty awful. So it wasn’t looking good for testing the AWD system as it looked a bit too much for this small car. Regardless, we put the selector into 4WD-Low and off we went, nice and steady. The interesting thing about the Jimny’s AWD system is that you put it into 1st gear, and don’t touch the accelerator or brake, all you do is just steer it. It finds its own grip, and speed, and goes up and down any hill, in its own time. Quite scary to begin with but you soon get used to not touching any pedal. It was amazing just how well it did in very precarious conditions, whether going up or down steep, slippery hills covered in thick mud. It has Unimog capabilities for the price of a small hatch. The exterior is very bold, and from a distance you could mistake it for the larger Mercedes G-Wagon, or a JEEP. The designers have certainly taken some styling cues from other well-known off-roaders. Oversall it looks good, purposeful and ready for action in any conditions. The only problem I can see with the new Jimny is the simple fact Suzuki GB will not be able to get enough vehicles to supply customer demands, as it will be very popular.

Local News Local News Local News Local News Nerja launches voting on it's participatory budgets The Town Hall of Nerja launched the voting process of it's first participatory budget, which ended just before Christmas. People registered in the municipality and aged over 16 had the right to choose between different proposals. For example, each person could choose three projects that they considered Nerja could improve on in 2019. The projects of youth culture, sport and leisure, environment and welfare, tourism and commerce and infrastructure were all available to be voted on. The proposals could be consulted on the Nerja Decide platform and the voting platform was also on the same link.

Eroski to continue at shopping centre El Ingenio but will reduce area by one third

All this will be done whilst still maintaining the identity of the shopping centre, which evokes memories of the old sugar mills that were present in this part of the Eastern Costa del Sol. The centre has an average of 9 million visitors per year, of which half come from outside the municipality.

Velez Malaga to invest 1 million Euros on the Arenas road. Twenty residents of Arenas met recently at the Council of Velez Malaga to see the improvements that will take place on the Arenas Road, the MA-4111. The project will cover a section measuring 1.625 kilometers with an investment of 938,000 euros. The road from Velez to Arenas involves a route of eight kilometers whose responsibility is the Diputacion de Malaga. It is a busy road with an important landscape, cultural and environmental value.

next year. This will directly improve the town's economy because tourists will travel into the historic streets of Nerja. There will also be events planned to commemorate the 60th anniversary this year. These start on the 11th January, where there will be a very special tribute to the five discoverers, of whom four are still alive, and to the widow of Jose Luis Barbero. The national lottery on that day will also be dedicated to discovery. There will also be the 60th International Festival of Music and Dance, which will be presented at the next edition of Fitur in Madrid in January, which will include First Class International Artists, Classical Music and Dance and of course Flamenco.

Torrox Policemen save 81 year old British man

The people who participated in the meeting were in favour of the works that are due to take place, even to the point of giving up some of the land from their property to progress with the project.

Chema Dominquez outlines the plans for Nerja Cave's 60th Year.

The company Sociedad Azucarera Larios Patrimonio SL (or Salsa for short) has just announced an investment of 25 million euros for the aquisition of the hypermarket and the petrol station in El Ingenio Shopping Centre. This operation also includes an agreement with Eroski supermarket which will continue as a tenant for 25 years in the facility. In the past decade, as a result of a loss of many businesses and franchises in it's facilities, the Eroski chain considered leaving the site. However, negotiation opened at the beginning of 2018 and it has been agreed that Eroski will continue but reduce it's floorspace by one third. This clears up the mystery regarding the continuity of Eroski in the Axarquia. A spokesperson for the Salsa group confirmed that the agreement will allow a major remodelling of the centre to improve the shopping experience of its users. The investment plan includes actions to improve parking, access, the provision of children's areas and the facade. In the interior, new signs for fashion, catering and leisure establishments are already incorporated and also there will be improvement to the visibility of shops, as well as making natural and artificial lighting more efficient. 22 THE MARKET PLACE

The Manager of the Nerja Cave Foundation Chema Dominquez who was appointed in August last year confirms, "it is an exciting challenge, because it is one of the most important monuments in Spain and in 2019 the Nerja Caves will celebrate their 60th anniversary of discovery."

The work of the Local Police is not always appreciated, many people only see them imposing fines and raising money for the municipality. However, in mid December a Local Police patrol in Torrox were first to arrive to an 81 year old English resident who had suffered a heart attack in the middle of the street.

The police officers, Alejandro Ortiz and German Luque did not wait around but went through the maneuvers of cardio resuscitation. Health, Body & Soul Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle

You actually have two ages, science says Age is just a number, or so the old wives' tale goes. But do any of us actually believe that? Probably not.

Nutritional rules of a beauty queen

But, as it turns out, there might be more truth to this than we thought. A new study has found we actually have two ages: our chronological age, and our biological age - the age of our bodies. And the latter might be more indicative of our health and life span. In other words, our risk factors for diseases and cancers could be different to someone else of the same age.

Biology of Aging at Harvard Medical School. Using biomarkers from blood samples, scientists can now use algorithms to tell us our biological age. Those with a lower biological age than their chronological age have a lower risk of disease and death, and visa versa.

So what are the major nutritional rules this beauty queen lives by? "We all age • Eat whole foods – these are foods biologically at But don't fret, if it does so happen you find that don’t need a label, like vegetables, different rates yourself in the former (slightly terrifying) camp, fruit, fish, etc. according to our unlike your chronological age, there are steps • Consume very little sugar genes, what we you can take to lower your biological age; as • Avoid sweet fizzy drinks eat, how much we can probably be expected this includes all the • Limit the amount of red meat to once exercise, and what good things: getting more sleep, eating healthier a week and eat small amounts of lean environmental toxins foods, exercising more, and the like. protein like fish and chicken we are exposed to. Events "The Fury of Colour" by Francisco Iturrino - until the 3rd March 2019.

Switching on of the Christmas Lights in Malaga

With this exhibition the Museo Carmen Thyssen Malaga wishes to pay tribute to Francisco Iturrino (Santander, 1864? Cagnes-sur-Mer, 1924), one of the leading artists represented in our permanent collection, and to help settle a historical debt: the unfair silencing of a pioneer in Spanish avant-garde art of the first quarter of the twentieth century.

Mima Malaga Until 4th January. At the Malaga Trade Fair and Conference Centre.

Henry Matisse Collection Jazz - Calle Compania, Malaga until 13th January Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 8pm

Due to his deteriorating health, which impeded him from painting, Henry Matisse began a new creative phase. Thus, the paper cut-outs that he had used years ago became his main means of expression with scissors replacing his brushes. On display are the 20 sheets that make up the book, lent by the MusĂŠe Fabre de Montpellier. 36 THE MARKET PLACE

MIMA is one of the most emblematic Christmas events in Malaga, a meeting place for children from 4 to 12 years of age where fun and learning go hand in hand creating great times for all the family.

This big get-together offers eight days of celebration, combining amusements, workshops and activities suitable for all tastes and ages, and attracting more than 30.000 visitors every year. As well as all the leisure options, this event promotes values linked to sport and physical activity, care and conservation of the environment, reading and technological skills.

Rock Cirk at the Teatro Cervantes - Malaga 4th January at 6pm The stage of the Cervantes theatre will be filled with the circus and rock at the hands of the Rolabola company, winner of the National Circus Award 2017. Rock Cirk is chaotic circus fun featuring a troupe of eccentric characters, to a soundtrack of daring electric guitar chords and strumming, bizarre balancing acts and long hair flying around... on the trapeze.

Manish's Zodiac predictions - January Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com

Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

You have an easier time committing yourself to projects, people, and plans. You can strike just the right balance in your life. It’s a great time to pick up information from your environment. You like being in the spotlight, and you want people to see what you’re doing. You can feel out the emotions in any situation, and you recall the way you felt in various situations vividly.

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

You are more inclined to take pride in your intellectual accomplishments and your ability to make connections. You are likely quite preoccupied with feelings of security and your inner experiences. This is a time when you send down roots and seek a feeling of belonging. If single, you can begin seeing someone in secret, or begin an affair. If attached, you can be more romantic and whimsical with your partner.

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)

You can set a new goal for yourself and achieve it. You’re more optimistic about the direction your life is taking. You might have a more materialistic view of life for the time being, or you have an increased interest in your own possessions, during this cycle. You are more attracted to objects and possessions that give you a sense of comfort, status, or luxury now.

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

You feel most like yourself when you’re focusing on the serious aspects of your life. There are important matters that need to be dealt with, and you’re willing to face whatever you have to. You may come across as more seductive, mysterious, and moody. You want to have someone with you all of the time, and prefer doing things with another person instead of alone or with a group.

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

The ideas you come up with are more radical than usual, and you’re open to ideas that are unusual, innovative, and unconventional. You’re attracted to people who are original thinkers. A close relationship could have a transformative effect on you. Getting engaged or married is a distinct possibility. If you’re already in a committed partnership, take your beloved’s advice and pursue a cherished dream.

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

You know exactly what you’re capable of, and you see situations realistically. You work hard and have great discipline, and the more you have success, the better you feel about yourself. Your confidence grows as your achievements stack up. You can have many more communications and conversations with others, gather information and facts, and want to engage with others for the mental stimulation. 42 THE MARKET PLACE

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

You’re willing to try new things, and opportunities can come to you more easily, or you make them for yourself. You could have a finger in many pies, so to speak, as your curiosity is piqued by a larger variety of things than usual. You are exploring and searching now, making connections, and paying attention to your immediate environment. Great energy for attraction, entertainment, and romance is with you.

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

You have a light-hearted, optimistic approach to everything, and you’re more friendly and gregarious with people. You think up big ideas and talk a big game, but probably won’t follow through on any of it. An inner sense of peace and security prevails. Your affections are strong but you don’t wear your heart on your sleeve just now, preferring quiet moments with loved ones.

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

You'll be pushing determinedly to find a better direction for yourself in your career and life in general. You are feeling inspired creatively and romantically and you express your loving feelings quite openly now. Creative self-expression of any kind is favoured at this time. Any love affair begun now will be characterized by good cheer, having fun, and a fair share of emotional drama.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

This month the focus can be on cultivating and nourishing your inner foundations that support you and your growth. This would be a good time to negotiate a contract, ask for a date or make a public presentation. Meeting someone special or enjoying a rendezvous with your partner could make you feel like you’re walking on air. Domestic relationships and the home environment tend to be harmonious and peaceful during this cycle.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

You can begin a new project that’ll help your career, get a promotion, or be recognized and praised for your accomplishments. You can commit fully to the people that are good for you, the ideas that are smartest, and the beliefs that make the most sense, and eliminate the rest. Loyalty and sensitivity in your relationships are more important to you than typically.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

You feel good when you focus on the future and on your dreams, and you can get closer to achieving your dreams if you put a little bit of effort in. You also like things that seem unconventional and different from anything else, and appreciate this in ideas, projects, and people. It’s a great time to push your agenda, whether it’s finding a job, getting a date or embarking on an adventure.

How much water should i be drinking? I'm sure you've heard that you should aim for eight glasses of water each day but this is sometimes too much - or too little - for your body's hydration needs.

I

could do a bunch of different calculations to find out your fluid needs but it varies depending on your age, activity levels, sweat, health, digestion, diet and stage of life (pregnant, breast-feeding, elderly, etc.). The general recommendation for adequate hydration for an adult is 30 to 40 millilitres of fluid per kilogram of body weight each day. For example, a 30-year-old woman who weighs 65kg would need around 2.3 litres of fluid per day, or around 10 cups. If you think 10 cups of water sounds difficult to drink each day, don’t worry; this fluid recommendation includes the amount of liquid you are consuming from hydrating foods such as fruits and vegetables. The easiest way to tell if you are dehydrated is to monitor your urine. Ideally, your urine should be a light yellow or lemonade colour and it should not have a strong odour. If your urine is dark yellow and has a concentrated smell, you’re already dehydrated and it’s time to drink some water.

Why do our bodies need water? Between 50 to 70 percent of our body weight is fluid. Our bodies 44 THE MARKET PLACE

need water to perform a variety of functions that are critical to our survival including: • Dissolving and transporting substances throughout our body • Keeping our cells alive • Maintaining healthy blood volume • Regulating body temperature • Protecting and lubricating major organs and tissues

Stay hydrated! Water is one of the best drinks to have to stay adequately hydrated. It doesn’t have any extra ingredients and can help your oral health as well! Drinking water after meals or snacks can help reduce the amount of plaque build up on your teeth and gums. You can also increase your fluid intake by consuming a variety of beverages that you enjoy including juice, milk, sports drinks, tea, coffee and soda but just remember that these beverages contribute to your total energy intake during the day. Foods can also be a great

source of fluid in your diet! Try adding hydrating foods such as fruits and vegetables to your meals and snacks to help you meet your fluid needs. If you’re not a super fan of water, you can enhance the flavour of your water by infusing it with fruit, herbs and spices. I really enjoy adding cucumber slices and mint to my water for a refreshing boost of flavour! The best way to stay adequately hydrated throughout the day is to keep a water bottle with you at all times.

Rainbow Superfood Salad with Basil Dressing INGREDIENTS l

Salad loaded with superfoods like pomegranate, avocado, hemp seeds and sauerkraut are great in any season. This salad is highly adaptable to what's in season and the dressing has the perfect balance of zing and creaminess that just keeps you wanting more. Adding sauerkraut to salads is great for extra probiotics and has an insanely delicious crunch factor. (It's also good for digestion, mood and reduces inflammation).

PREPARATION (serves - 4) 1) In a large bowl top greens with sliced courgette, peppers, apple, pear, pomegranate and avocado. Sprinkle with sauerkraut, hemp and pumpkin seeds. 2) Combine all ingredients for the dressing in a jar, cover and shake until everything is combined. 3) Pour dressing over the salad just before serving and enjoy!

RESCUING AND FOSTERING RESPONSIBILITIES Due the number of abandoned dogs and cats in the community and the limited places for them to be housed once they are caught the Costa Animal Society (CAS) and other animal charities must often ask a person who rescues an animal to foster it until another solution can be found. C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) HAPPY NEW YEAR! As we enter 2019 the Costa Animal Society (CAS), now it is 33rd year, is still busy rescuing and rehoming as many dogs and cats as it can in Nerja/Maro and its near environs. We hope you understand that one hundred percent of the work done by CAS is carried out by unpaid volunteers. In fact, for most of the CAS volunteers, their animal rescue work is what they do after they get home from work. Or, in the inspiring cases of our senior volunteers, it is the work they do after a lifetime of work. So, yes, there are limits as to how many animals we can help. We are limited by the amount of volunteers we have, by the funds available to us, and by the space needed to care for these lovely dogs and cats until we can find them perfectly matched forever homes. If the welfare of homeless and/ or abused animals concerns you please considering helping CAS. How’s that for a New Year’s resolution! For general enquires and a noobligation chat, please contact CAS President Vera Newing on 95 252 9670. WAGGY TALES OFELIA

Ofelia is a 1-2 year old small Podenco female who was rescued by an English lady from the campo in early November. In a joint effort between the Costa Animal Society (CAS) and APA, the other animal charity in Nerja, Ofelia was taken to the vet for evaluation and vaccinations and spayed a few weeks later once she’d put on a few extra pounds. During that time APA found a home for the dog in Germany and she was housed by CAS in kennels until her transportation could be arranged on December 14. Ofelia celebrated Christmas in style under the tree in her new home sporting a new coat. 48 THE MARKET PLACE

A CASE IN POINT

CAMERON Cameron is an example of when the Costa Animal Society (CAS) asked the rescuer to foster a dog they’d found in Maro. CAS arranged for the animal to be examined by a vet, chipped and issued a passport, vaccinated and castrated. But when CAS found a new home for the pet with a nice couple in Alhaurin de Grande, the fosterer/rescuer refused to give up the dog on the eve of the adoption and insisted on keeping Cameron for herself. Needless to say, this result is frustrating for the charity because all of the time and energy put into advertising the dog, communicating with potential adopters and arranging viewings ends up being for nought. If the rescuer/fosterer had let the charity know she was becoming attached to Cameron early on, CAS would have still helped her with the vet care and could have directed the adopters to another pet instead of disappointing them at the last minute. READY FOR ADOPTION

GEORGIE Sometimes when a pet comes into your life it can only be described as kismet. On one difficult day when a family’s ten year old tuxedo cat was killed by a dog they were looking after for a friend, a wee waif was found in the garage of the family when they returned home from the vet. At two months of age the kitten is a bit on the wild side, but the foster family is working on taming her and have decided to name her Georgie. If you are looking to adopt a continued on page 50

CAS is regularly called upon to assist stray cats which may require veterinary care such as sterilisation, evaluation and medication for infections or illnesses and/or the treatment of wounds. As always, CAS is in need of fosterers for kittens, especially, but not only, those that need bottle-feeding. Also, we do have several adult cats needing homes or foster homes. All of these cats are fully housetrained, neutered, and vaccinated.

TAIL TORROX PUPPY CRISES As we come to the end of 2018 Tail can look back at this year with mixed feelings We have reached total saturation point having taken in just under 400 puppies during the year. These have been found in all the usual places and some new ones bins, BP petrol station, supermarket gates as well as dumped at the refuge gates. These pups have been anything from 2 to 3 days old including 2 lots who were dumped inside a tied plastic bag in a bin. Is there no end to this cruelty? One of our supporters atttached a notice to the bin after finding 5 tiny pups in a tied plastic bag

*Late addition: Last month, four kittens were found abandoned in the Capistrano Village area of Nerja. They were taken in by a Swedish couple and are currently in foster care. All four have been neutered and are ready for adoption aside from one boy, the one without any brown markings, who has already found his forever home. For more information on cats available for adoption, contact Fiona via the Costa Animal Society’s website https://casnerja.webs.com, or on Facebook at /casnerja and /east of malaga kittens and cats. CAS SHOP NEWS Ladies and Gents, to ensure a good turnover in our clothing stock, we have a colour coded pricing system. When we change colours every six to eight weeks the old colour ticket items go to half price. Yes, you read that right: half price! The Costa Animal Society (CAS) Shop is located next door to the Good Stuff CafÊ in Nerja at No. 2 Calle Castilla Perez. Our opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 10.00am until 2.00pm. CAS is always eager to hear from people who are interested in becoming shop volunteers. One four hour shift once a week makes a big difference. There are always two volunteers per shift making for a safe, relaxed, congenial environment. For more information please ring the shop on 643 212 409 and ask to speak with our shop manager May Delaney.

CAN YOU HELP CAS? The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact! In particular, we are currently seeking someone or ones who can help with fundraising and social media promotion. In addition, fosterers are always required to take short-term care of animals until a permanent home can be found. CAS will provide fosterers with all they need: food, medicine, bedding, leads, etc., as well as advice at any time. Even if you are only here for few months a year, CAS would appreciate your help. For general enquires and a no-obligation chat, contact CAS President Vera Newing on 95 252 9670. Despite the uncertainties of Brexit and the halting economic recovery, money is always needed to cope with the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. We are really fortunate at Tail to have some fanstastic partners in Germany who help us to rehome these pups but we still have to find enormous amount for our vets bills to pay for vaccines, chips and passports. Nerja

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
