How to pay less IBI tax on your property

Discounts For Families All property owners in For families that have three or more children, discounts of up to 90% of the IBI are Spain have to pay the available. The exact amount will depend not only on where you live but also on the annual IBI tax (Impuesto value of your property. de Bienes Inmuebles), Additionally single-parent families with two or more children can also request a discount in most locations in Spain. regardless of whether the property is in use or not. Solar Panels = Discount Trying to reduce the rate If you’ve installed solar panels then the Town Hall is authorised to offer a discount up to 50%. This discount is normally applied for each of the three years following charged is not easy, but it is of installation. possible, take a look at what Is Your Property Exempt? we’ve found. Live in a castle? Listed buildings (patrimonio historico) or those that pay a very small IBI tax (up to around 12 euros) are exempt from payment. Also properties that have suffered from some type of natural disaster (such as storm damage) could be exempt for a period.

If You Rent Out Your Property You can deduct IBI payments from the rental income when declaring for tax purposes. In this way you‘ll pay less income tax. Text provided by MoneySaverSpain.com

Pay By Direct Debit And/Or Instalments Most municipalities in Spain will offer a small reduction, up to 5% in some towns, if you pay by direct debit. Often the direct debit is split 60/40, with the 5% reduction applied on the second payment. Other Ayuntamientos will let you pay monthly with a reduction prorated across all months. Even if you don’t get a reduction, paying by direct debit ensures that you don’t forget and end up paying interest due to late payment. The Town Hall is only obliged to send you a payment notification the first time you have to pay the IBI, in subsequent years reminders may be covered by the publication of an official notice. 8 THE MARKET PLACE

Check Your IBI Bill Many Ayuntamientos have made great claims about how they haven’t increased the IBI tax for years, or that increases have been minimal. And yet people find themselves paying higher and higher rates every year. Why is this? The answer can be found in the different parts that make up the tax and you should check your bill carefully: Property Valuation. This figure is reviewed periodically and you may find from one year to another a substantial increase. However, when this happens this increase is prorated to avoid a sudden increase in the IBI. The applicable tax rate. This rate varies across municipalities and for those areas with better infrastructure the rates tend to be higher. Deductions applicable. You should check this section to make sure everything that applies to your circumstances is reflected. If you don’t agree with your IBI bill, request amendments in writing to your local Town Hall. This must be done during the two-month period you have to pay the tax. If you receive a notification from the Land Registry that the value of your property has been increased, check it carefully. If you don’t agree with the valuation you have one month to make a claim against the decision.

Eleven tonnes of jellyfish retrieved between Nerja and Mijas in 3 Days

The accident happened in the natural park area of Maro - Cerro Gordo, where a vehicle fell ten metres down a ravine on the beach track of El Canuelo. The three injured people managed to get out of the car on their own, although they had various injuries.

The Izquierda Unida party in Velez Malaga Town Hall have asked for a meeting with the Delegate for the Envionment of the Junta de Andalucia to discuss the daily problems that the area of the Rio Delta in Velez suffers. The Izquierda Unida party (the opposition) have presented a proposition of law in order for the board to declare the delta of the Rio Velez a natural wetland zone and want to guarantee its conservation.

The athletics stadium will be open Monday to Friday 9am to 1pm and 6.30pm to 9.30pm and Saturdays 9am to 1pm and closed Sundays.

Car plunges down ravine, injuring three people near Canuelo Beach, The summer pool is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm and 5pm to Maro

A 50 year old man was transferred to the Hospital Comercal with multiple injuries and two women aged 25 and 26 were treated at the Health Centre in Nerja.

Izquierda Unida asks the Junta to Declare the Rio Velez Delta a Natural Protection Zone.

The huge jellyfish plague that has affected the entire coast of Malaga recently has subsided a little with the invaluable support of the "quitanantas" (boats collecting the jellyfish, provided by the town halls). The invasion of the Pelagia Noctiluca, the most common species of jellyfish in this area of the Mediterranean has been profound this year, one of the more serious episodes since 2012. In fact in our area between Nerja and Velez Malaga 8,000 kilos of jellyfish were removed from the sea.

For many years environmental groups such as GENA - Ecologists in Action and the Spanish Society of Ornithology (SEO) have supported such action. Some of these groups recently carried out an initiative to clean the Rio Velez Delta. The participants collected more than 300 kilos of abandoned solid waste.

Diplomas awarded to the elderly in the community

The track where the accident occured is a forest track of 1,500 metres which connects the N340 with El Canuelo beach, one of the most frequented beaches in the natural park. The incident happened very close to the El Paraiso restaurant.

Diplomas have been awarded to the elderly in the community of Nerja for the Active Aging Program called "Activate 2017/18". The Mayor and senior Councillors presented the certificates last month at the end of the activities which consisted of Aqua Aerobics, Urban Gymnastics and Hiking. The Mayor also thanked Maria Gallardo and the office staff for their work in coordinatiing this activity.

Summer Schedules for the Municipal Sports Facilities - Nerja

Velez Malaga to host fourth stage of cycling's La Vuelta

The Department of Sport have announced the sports schedules for July and August. The Polideportivo Municipal will open Monday to Friday from 8am to 2.30pm 12 THE MARKET PLACE

A biologist who specialises in jellyfish confirmed that the presence of jellyfish

remains high on much of the coast of Malaga and on many beaches the yellow hazard flags fly to worn people who may want to swim in the water. The sting of the Pelagia Noctiluca is not deadly but it is painful. If you suffer a sting it is recommended that you wash the wound quickly with salt water and go to the lifeguard station for assistance.

The capital of the Axarquia will host the last stage in the province of Malaga of this prestigious cycling competition, which will be an excellent tourist showcase for the region. The 4th stage will start on the 28th August on the Avenida de las Naciones in Velez Malaga. The Mayor confirmed that it would be an honor to host this sporting event.

The Arts Society Nerja on holiday: The Arts and Beauty of Mallorca. Thirty-seven members of The Arts Society Nerja enjoyed a great time on Mallorca spending 6 days exploring the Arts on the island. For some of us a journey down memory lane, revisiting the island and for others who had never been there before, a very pleasant surprise. Normally associated with beaches and sun, not everyone knows the island has always had a very strong attraction for artists, International and Spanish. Initially we had a walking tour of Palma with our guide Ana, experiencing the wonderful atmosphere of the old town, the beautiful modernist houses (Art Nouveau), the wonderful views of the Mediterranean and the amazing 14th c gothic Cathedral where we also saw the works of Gaudí and Barceló. Our Welcome Dinner was in an old wine press with its own special ambience. Here we met several of the Committee Members of the soon-to-be inaugurated, The Arts Society Mallorca. We wish them a great launch in October and hope they attract many members! It will be the seventh Society in Spain of The Arts Society. We already have The Arts Societies Nerja, Costa del Sol (Fuengirola), Gibraltar, Frontera (Soto Grande), Benhavis and Marina Alta (Javea). There are two more societies forming at the moment! In the Europe countries Spain has by far most Societies outside the UK. For the next 3 days we had coach tours to explore the arts and the beauty of the island with our guide Sarah. The first day we went into the hills of Tramontana, which has been declared a World Heritage Site. We visited the monastery where Chopin and George Sand stayed for a year where we enjoyed a Chopin concert. We continued to Robert Graves House in Deiá, a stunningly beautiful and inspiring spot where he lived from 1929 until his death in 1985. He is buried under a great cypress tree in the churchyard. Dividing ourselves over the house, the garden and the video on his life we agreed it was a most interesting visit. Then on to Soller to a beautiful modernista house,

The Gemstone of

Ruby

Ruby is well-known for it’s intensive, beautiful pink to blood-red colour and exists from opaque to transparent. The light coloured pink gemstones, commonly known as ‘pink Sapphires’, are in fact in gemmological terms classified as Rubies because the colouring agent is Chromium, the same as in darker red Rubies.

Famous Rubies: The Liberty Bell Ruby: This carved Ruby is opaque and of fine red colour. It is the largest mined Ruby in the world, found in the 1950s in east Africa. In 1976 it was carved into a bell shape surrounded with 50 white diamonds (representing the states) and topped by an eagle for the United States

The Rosser Reeves Ruby:

The Richard Burton Ruby:

This is an oval cabochon star Ruby and was named after its owner. This beautiful gemstone was found in Sri Lanka, weights 138,72 carats (27,74 grams) and is one of the largest and finest star Rubies in the world. It is of fine quality with a great red colour, translucency and a centrally-aligned, well-defined 6-ray star. Rosser Reeves was an American advertising executive and carried his Ruby around as his lucky stone, referring to it as his baby. In 1965 he donated it to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC.

In 1968 Richard Burton purchased this faceted oval Ruby set in a ring surrounded of white diamonds as a Christmas present for his wife, Elisabeth Taylor. Ruby symbolizes deep and passionate love, so he promised Elisabeth that he would buy her a special Ruby. This Burmese gem weights 8,24 carat and is indeed special; considered the perfect Ruby for its fine quality and rich blood red colour. When Elisabeth Taylor’s jewellery collection were sold in Christie’s auction late 2011 this Ruby hit one of the 6 record breaking prices paid for her jewellery and sold for US$ 4,2 million, even though it was estimated at US$ 1- 1,5 million before the auction.

cushion-cut Burmese Ruby is known as the most expensive Ruby in the world. It is 25,59 carats and of the finest, rare quality with an untreated, vivid Gemstone - Family: ‘pigeon blood’ red Ruby is the red variety of the gemstone group called colour. Healing properties:

In many cultures Ruby is admired as a healing gemstone for its ability to increase the joy of life, passion, bravery, virtue and courage. For centuries it has stimulated vitality, strength and active sexuality and supports intentional wishes and desires. Physically, Ruby helps with infectious diseases such as intestinal infection. It stimulates the spleen, the adrenal system and the circulation. 18 THE MARKET PLACE

First Driving Impressions – Suzuki Swift Sport, European Press Launch, Malaga.

The Swift Sport is Suzuki’s Hot-ish-Hatch and first saw the light of day in 2006. The second generation went on-sale in 2012 and now the third-iteration hits the streets. In those 16 years of Sports over 11,500 have been sold in the UK.

W

e flew into Malaga, and the cars were lined up and ready to go. All were yellow, so looked like a field of daffodils. We jumped in and headed off into them-there-hills. The Swift Sport is powered by a 1.4-litre four-cylinder Boosterjet Turbo petrol engine that produces 140ps, coupled to a 6-speed manual gearbox. It goes from 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds. We left the motorway after cruising effortlessly at 130kph and took the twisty and interesting roads up into the hills. I think the idea of using this type of road was to really put the Sport through its paces and test its ‘Heartect’ lightweight platform, its enhanced braking system, its advanced handling capabilities, its new Monroe front shock absorbers, its optimised roll rigidity, its improved dynamic response, its 15% increase in camber rigidity during cornering, added degrees of stiffness, the extra thickness of the stabiliser joint bars to improve roll stability... and so the list goes on, to help it go round the corners better and make it stop quicker. In reality, we just had a nice, gentle drive in the mountains taking in the spectacular scenery going up towards Ronda. No point in rushing when there is so much to see. We might put it through its paces and see what it is capable of though, on the way back down, after lunch - but not sure that is really a good idea!! Suzuki sold over 40,000 cars in the UK in 2017, taking 1.59% market share, and fleet sales took a 1.3% market share, so they seem to be on the up. The new Swift Sport gets a new and improved 6-speed gearbox that is more an evolution of the type used in the previous model. In development numerous enhancements have been made for optimum gear shift feel, which include the fitment of a new gearlever with 10% shorter throw. Other modifications include the use of a triple cone synchromesh for first and second gear, and double cone synchromesh for third gear. The gear change did feel positive, with little movement between gear-changes, and did feel sporty. A rear roof spoiler is standard and helps keep maximum tyre contact with the road by decreasing lift at higher speeds.

Aerodynamics have been improved further with a new design engine under-cover, floor covers and front intake strakes. Ideas for an outdoor kitchen

Enjoy long evenings with a glass of wine, invite friends round for an outdoor dining experience, cook with the children and then relax in the sun ...

I

f you have a garden or a terrace, you can always consider designing a kitchen outside. There are many styles, but all of them are there to enjoy the long summer evenings outdoors. We offer you some ideas to get dreaming about having one yourself.

Advantages of cooking outdoors Besides enjoying the outdoors while preparing the most delicious recipes, there is no need to take so many walks to the kitchen if we are going to eat in the garden when we

have an outdoor kitchen. Also, the odours that sometimes occur inside will not matter outside where smells are dispersed easily. So providing you have enough space outside, the same complete kitchen can be constructed outside that we have inside : with appliances, oven, furniture and even a central island. You can complete it with all types of storage, bar, cabinets and shelves, whatever you find useful.

A seasonal kitchen: only for summer Many kitchens are modular. That is, we can project them to the extent we want. It means that we can customize the kitchen to any space and environment. The work area, the washing area and the food preparation can be perfectly limited with this type of structure. We can even incorporate a mobile barbecue that we can move easily: use in summer and store in winter.

Lighting the kitchen for summer nights When it is very hot, what you really want is to dine outdoors, on the terrace or garden, to combat the high temperatures. Therefore, if we have an outdoor kitchen, it is also important to think about lighting. The most important thing is safety, so you must ensure that the entire electrical installation is supervised by a professional. Second, LED lights are usually very nice and help create warm environments, as well as enhance those darker areas. You can also include a spotlight with direct light on the most important areas, such as work or cooking. 22 THE MARKET PLACE

How to fight the heat Combating heat is another of the great conditioning factors when designing a kitchen outdoors, if what we want is to combat the high temperatures we suffer in summer. Therefore, one of the alternatives is to include a pergola or sail shade in the garden. There are many materials: wood, aluminum, some of these are fixed permanent structures, others are mobile which means they can be taken away in the winter. These structures are ample enough for shade and protection from UV Sunlight.

Extra small kitchen The lack of space does not have to be an impediment to design an outdoor kitchen that is both practical and beautiful. For small gardens, there are also smaller kitchen models to optimize the space. The space for storage would have to be reduced, but the main functions are assured. There are also grills, ovens and barbecues of “mini” size to be adapted to this type of kitchen.

Think about the design Just like functionality, it is important to think about the design of the kitchen we want to have. A vintage kitchen, a rustic kitchen, perhaps modern ...

It is important to be clear about this point to design it according to our preferences. For example, if the style you like the most is the bohemian, you can opt for stone as the main building material and also, take advantage of this material to make a working kitchen.

Open kitchen Why not implement this wonderful idea? Maybe you don’t have enough space for an outdoor kitchen but perhaps there is the possibility of looking onto the garden. Perhaps you could design a kitchen that was halfway between the interior and the exterior. Both environments could be connected through folding or sliding doors, that we can open and close completely depending on our needs. Therefore, even if we cook indoors, we will have the feeling of being outdoors.

Winding down in Mykonos When we arrived in Mykonos towards the end of our trip we were looking for the exact opposite experience than other visitors to this so-called party island.

By Jessica Infantino Trumble

M

ykonos was my Greek island epilogue. After 2 weeks hopping around – from Crete to Santorini to Paros – we were nearing the point of blue and white beauty overload, plus the sun and high temperatures were definitely starting to ware on us. So when we arrived in Mykonos towards the end of our trip we were looking for the exact opposite experience than other visitors to this so-called party island. We wanted to enjoy one more good meal and one more good beach, so in a

sense were searching for the milder side of Mykonos. And luckily, that’s just what we found. Here’s how it all unfolded, plus a few tips and recommendations for your trip to Mykonos. Like most visitors we arrived by ferry at Mykonos’ New Port where our taxi driver was waiting. You can also take the bus into town depending on the location of your hotel, but with luggage the taxi was the most convenient option for us (20 euros, prearranged through our hotel since taxis are very limited – only about 30 on the entire island). We were slightly worried that Mykonos would put us back on tourist overload like the ever-popular Santorini, but surprisingly the island felt less chaotic than we anticipated. Also, Mykonos is often referred to as a luxury island, made popular by Jackie Onassis in the 1970s, but we found that a visit here doesn’t have to be expensive if you don’t want it to be. Another important fact about Mykonos is you can’t drink the tap water, but there’s a small supermarket near the Fabrika bus station where you can purchase bottled water along with fruit and other snacks during your stay. After checking into the Portobello Boutique Hotel we made our way down to the town to explore its maze of whitewashed streets, purposely designed that way to confuse seafaring invaders. We found the shopping in Mykonos to be particularly good, and lost count of all of the stray cats that crossed our path as we made our way through the narrow lanes of painted flagstone and colourful windows, doors and staircases. Unfortunately, the island’s unofficial mascot, Petros the pelican, was nowhere to be found. That night we took in one of our last Greek sunsets from our hotel’s appropriately named Panorama Sunset Bar, perched high above the town and Old Port with an unobstructed view of the golden sun dancing on the white rooftops before dipping below the surface of the Aegean Sea, bathing the horizon in bands of orange, yellow and pink.

30 THE MARKET PLACE

As you might expect, most restaurants in Mykonos cater to the tourist crowd, but if you choose wisely you might just happen upon a gem like we did with Eva’s Garden. Tucked into the corner of a courtyard filled with restaurants aplenty, we were drawn in by the beautiful “hidden garden” dining room (there’s also rooftop garden seating upstairs under a canopy of grape leaves, which would have been had it not been so windy that night). This restaurant offers a well-versed menu of traditional Greek dishes that made it almost too difficult to choose knowing that this would be one of our last meals. We decided on a Greek salad, a dip trio of hummus, tzatziki and an eggplant spread with pita bread and moussaka, which was brought to us in waves with the warm, friendly service you would expect from a familyowned and run restaurant. In addition to the ouzo and house white wine we also ordered, our meal was capped with complimentary glasses of the evergreen-like Mastika liquor. As we wandered the streets postdinner, the once-sleepy streets had taken on a whole different vibe, now alive with dinner and disco goers. Joining the nocturnal crowd, we also

indulged in one more treat from I Scream Gelato. The shop had a small variety of homemade flavours with local standouts like fruit with yogurt and, believe it or not, Mastika. When in Greece, right? The next morning we set out on what would be our last beach day, and in Mykonos there’s a beach for everyone – from party to family-friendly and gay to watersport-centric. Most beaches can be easily reached by public bus in 20 minutes or less from the Fabrika bus station on the south side of town. Timetables are posted for each destination and tickets can be purchased at the kiosk or from the driver on the bus for the same price. Since we were seeking a more laidback setting we took the bus west to Agios Ionnias (also called Agios Giannis), a quiet spot with few people and a restaurant/bar nearby for midday refreshments. Claiming our strip of sand for the day, we rented 2 chairs and a big straw umbrella for a reasonable 12 euros (at larger beaches chairs can be much more expensive, so always ask before you commit or forgo a chair and spread your towel out on the ground instead).

Large rocks made this beach perfect for wading, even if the shallow bluegreen water was a little more rough and cooler than we had experience on other Greek islands thanks to Mykonos’ omnipresent wind. This kept the temperature down too, which made it easy to settle into our last slice of paradise. After the beach we took the bus back to town and made one more spin by a few of the island’s most iconic sights – the postcard-perfect windmills, charming Little Venice and the whitewashed Panagia Paraportiani church (which was surprisingly hard to find). Still no Petros (perhaps he was hiding from the wind?), but the Greek charm, hospitality and beauty that we had grown accustomed to were souvenirs that we would not soon forget. You can go via Barcelona to fly direct into Mykonos or fly into Athens direct from Malaga and take the ferry to Mykonos which takes about 2½ hours. The price works out around the same, 350 Euros per person based on travelling early in July.

How many hours of sleep you need to avoid metabolic syndrome

Men And Skin Cancer

Yep, men are three times more likely to develop skin cancer than women. While that’s not breaking news, scientists have struggled to figure out the reason why men are more susceptible, and AskMen has discovered that there appears to be a breakthrough in male skin cancer treatment. While testing mice at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, researchers found that women may have more natural antioxidant protection in their skin than men, and that’s one of the key reasons for the disparity. Secondly, the study also discovered that UVB exposure spurred a unique inflammatory white blood cell called myeloid-derived suppressor cells to travel from the bone marrow to the exposed skin. In short, there was a higher population of these cells moving to the skin in males compared to females, and the general theory is that these cells can lead to the creation of skin cancer and other tumors. In any case, you might want to avoid the UV rays as much as possible. It’s a good thing that tanning is a far bigger priority for women than it is for men.

34 THE MARKET PLACE

Researchers have determined yet another reason we should be aiming for eight hours of sleep a night with a new study concluding that those of us who get too little or too much sleep could be at risk of developing a variety of health conditions. The study, recently published in the journal BMC Public Health, found that people who get less than six hours of sleep a night are more likely to develop metabolic syndrome. Interestingly those who managed more than 10 hours of sleep were also at risk. Metabolic syndrome is actually a series of conditions including high blood sugar and cholesterol levels and increased blood pressure. Sufferers also typically gain excess fat around the waist area. Researchers from Seoul National University College of Medicine examined data from over 133 000 Korean men and women, analysing the effect that sleep had on their ability

to develop the condition. Those individuals who either slept too much or too little showed elevated blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure and also had additional fat around their waists. “This is the largest study examining a doseresponse association between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome and its components separately for men and women,” said Claire E. Kim, lead author of the study. “We observed a potential gender difference between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome, with an association between metabolic syndrome and long sleep in women and metabolic syndrome and short sleep in men.” Although the study authors noted that their research was only observational, meaning that they were unable to draw iron-clad conclusions, it may be best to aim for eight hours of shut-eye just in case.

Eating Healthy In Restaurants this Summer Dining out is fun, but it can also cost you, calories-wise. The three questions you should always ask when eating out are: “What is in the dish?” “How is it prepared?” and “What is in the sauce?” In terms of the first question, you need to know what you are eating, as lightercoloured proteins like chicken, turkey, seabass, halibut and tofu are lower in calories than their darker counterparts like beef, lamb, tuna and salmon. Second, knowing how the dish is prepared can save you many calories, as dishes that are fried, glazed, battered or sautéed are laden with higher calorie oils and sugars. Stick with dishes that are steamed, broiled, baked, rubbed or poached. Third, ask about the sauces. Many of the "hidden" calories are in the sauces due to the butters, oils and sugars they are made with. Make sure you find out what's in them and order them on the side. Another "food" that has both “hidden” and "empty" calories is alcohol. Always order by the glass instead of the bottle, so you are not tempted to consume more than you should. Have one glass of wine at dinner, but avoid ordering a glass if you are waiting for company at the bar. Lighter-coloured beers and spirits, like vodka, are usually lower in calories than darker-coloured ones, like bourbon. A drink on the rocks, as a shot, spritzer or with soda water, will have fewer calories than one mixed with sugary sweeteners like juices, sour mix, tonic or sodas.

Limit non-essential strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day.

31st International Jazz Festival, Almuñecar A pioneer in combining culture and tourism, "Jazz en la Costa" is one of the most respected and internationally prized jazz events and one of the few festivals that has the seal of quality of the European Union

Performers: 17 July: Cecile McLorin Salvant 18 July: Mike Stern & Randy Brecker 19 July: Fred Hersch trío 20 July: Robin McKelle & The Flystones 21 July: Kurt Elling Quintet 22 July: Chano Domínguez & Paolo Fresu Devil Quartet.

The thirty-first edition will begin on July 17 with Cecile McLorin. No vocalist of the international jazz scene has won more awards and honours. Mike Stern left his imprint on the music of Miles Davis in the early 80's, since then he has released numerous recordings, six of which were nominated for the Grammy Awards. Stern will be accompanied by trumpeter and composer Randy Brecker, one of the best drummers in the world, Dennis Chambers and the renowned bassist Tom Kennedy. Defined as "the most innovative jazz pianist of the last decade", Fred Hersch has a career which has spanned more than three decades. He has won countless awards and recognitions from the most prestigious cultural institutions and specialized publications from the world of jazz. Robin McKelle, accompanied by The Flystones, is always an exciting experience, expressing his passion for blues, Memphis sound, soul and jazz, in a really contagious way. Kurt Elling is a writer, poet and philosopher and one of the best jazz singers of our time. He has won numerous Grammy Awards and has been elected "Male Singer of the Year" by the Association of Jazz Journalists eight times. The Festival closes with Chano Domínguez and Paolo Fresu. Fresu is a trumpeter of refined technique, and Andalusian pianist Chano Domínguez has an incredible ability to combine the subtlety of jazz and the strength of flamenco.

Jim Bromley 38 THE MARKET PLACE

Edinburgh and Warrant Officer Mick Woolley will talk about the PRC and what its aims are. If you are interested in attending this lunch or any future one, please just contact Vera and book in. We are always pleased to see new faces and be assured that you do not need to be ex-service, British or of any particular faith, just interested in the work we do. It is with great sadness that I tell you that at the beginning of the month we saw the passing of one of our veteran members, Jim Bromley. Jim was of that special breed of gentlemen who fought in WW2 in the Arctic convoy and was instrumental in bringing about recognition not simply from the British government (70 years later) but also by the Russian Government in gratitude for the contribution the convoy made to the people of Russia by taking supplies to them during that conflict. The convoy was recognised by Churchill as “the worst journey in the

world” as it faced severe cold, fog, ice floes and waves so huge they tore at ships armour plating, as well as attacks from the German u-boats and aircraft.. ”Reluctant hero” describes Jim, who, like so many other heroes of that time rarely spoke about his experiences. He will be greatly missed by everyone in the Legion, but we take a small grain of comfort knowing that his widow Vera is fortunate in having a very loving and caring family around her, testimony to the fact that Jim was a wonderful father and husband. Our next lunch will be in September, and as always we extend an invitation to anyone who is interested in coming along. Manish's Zodiac predictions - July Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com

Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

This is a new era for you and you couldn’t be happier. You are due to gain recognition in your professional life, and sexual and romantic satisfaction will follow close behind. Your public image and professional affairs will demand extra time and responsibilities but the rewards that follow will be worth it. You are learning about your need for self-expression through adventure.

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

This is a time when you free yourself of personal inhibitions that may have been part of your life in the past. You will find this to be an action packed month and there will be celebrations and other adventures on your personal agenda during this fantastic month for sex and love. Love will make you smile and there will be talk of moving in with someone special.

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)

It’s a time of more spontaneous expression. It is a month in which you rediscover your roots and work on loving yourself from the bottom up. You are becoming more goal-oriented, less freewheeling, and certainly more concerned about preparing for your future. You are also beginning a long and rewarding process of increased learning, studying, and expanding your skills set. You also take more pleasure in nurturing others.

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

Your personal philosophy will be changing, and this month gives you a push towards adopting beliefs that truly work for you in the real world. There may also be some sort of drama surrounding communication, modes of transportation, mobility, neighbours, or siblings. Projects begun now can have long-term benefits. Finances are likely to be quite strong and reliable now.You may also attract unusual romantic partners during this cycle.

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

Long-term goals for personal fulfilment come into focus and give you a sense of moving forward in a positive direction. Some added responsibilities are likely and you will find satisfaction in doing your share. You should begin to find ways to bring definition and articulation to your innermost wishes and hopes for your personal path. It’s a time of more spontaneous expression. Casual love affairs that have grown stale may be left behind now.

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

Your long-term personal goals come under scrutiny. How you fit in with others, your affiliations with people and groups, and your peers all become serious matters in your eyes. Career matters come to a head. You’re called to perform, perhaps on a moment’s notice, and it’s best to keep your cool and do whatever you can to show your competence. You are learning to let go of ego attachments.

This is a time when you invest in yourself and in the people around you that you respect. Benefits may not be immediate, but they will surely arrive down the road. Relationships are improved as you feel stronger and more comfortable in your own skin. An increased sense of security and safety may be derived from your domestic life. Improvements to your home life, family and basic psychological foundation are in focus.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

You are a little less conservative and more positive and hopeful when it comes to your attitude towards money. Money is often spent on building your nest and your sense of security this month. Some of you may be more willing to take risks with personal finances. Some of your past efforts may be rewarded now, perhaps in small but tangible ways. You will experience love and have amazing relationships in this period.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

You are also beginning a long and rewarding process of increased learning, studying, and expanding your skills set. The month is bound to bring pleasure, bounty, and expansion on the domestic scene. It is a period in which you rediscover your roots. You’ll have big chances of meeting the person of your dreams. If you have already met him/her, the month promises understanding and shared accomplishments. 42 THE MARKET PLACE

You are more inclined towards financial speculation this month, but should watch for overdoing it. Your self-image is being re-worked, and you are becoming more sensitive to a greater, perhaps more spiritual, sense of purpose. You are likely to see benefits to home, family, property, and domestic comfort matters. Much joy and fulfilment may be found in your family and your home life during this cycle. It’s a time to pursue the dreams, ideals, and ideas you have put on the back burner. Take creative risks, as well as personal ones, with your new-found confidence. There are likely to be some tests and challenges brought to your friendships and more casual relationships as you are weeding out all that is superficial. Already committed ones will be spicing up a current relationship.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

You’ll have a lot of responsibilities, you’ll possibly need to catch up with something or get really involved in serious matters that require organization, strategy and patience. The need to take a workrelated decision seems inevitable. You’ll have the clearness and the necessary details to make a good decision. This period will enhance creativity and inspire your desire to act, paint, dance or pursue something that is personally meaningful to you.

Micronutrients: Choline Often described as “vitamin-like” for its water soluble vitamin properties, choline is a unique micronutrient that is crucial for many biological functions. Despite its importance, choline is seriously overlooked. Data suggests only 8 percent of adults meet the adequate intake for choline; in 2010, it was identified as a shortfall nutrient; and Dietary Guidelines estimate most adults consume less than the adequate intake level. Roles in Health

milligrams per day, respectively.

Choline is essential throughout the life cycle and is critical for brain and spinal cord development. Beginning in utero and continuing throughout childhood, choline is crucial for brain development and cognitive learning. Some research shows choline can improve memory by slowing cognitive decline in older adults.

Food Sources

Beyond the brain, choline is part of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter important in muscle control, memory, mood and nervous system functions. Choline also plays a role in the stabilization of DNA, transportation of fats and (with folate) possibly the prevention of neural tube defects.

The recent daily value for choline is set at 550 milligrams per day for adults and children 4 and older. Foods containing 55 to 104.5 milligrams (10 to 19 percent of the DV) of choline per serving can be declared a good source and foods containing 110 milligrams or more of choline per serving (20 percent or more of the DV) are an excellent source. Current Recommendations Requirements begin at 125 milligrams per day in the first six months of life and advance to 550 milligrams per day for males 14 and older and 425 milligrams per day for females 19 and older. in some multivitamin mineral products in amounts ranging from 10 to 250 milligrams.

Signs of Deficiency While most people fall short of meeting choline requirements, deficiency is rare in healthy, non-pregnant people. A choline deficiency can cause muscle

damage and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease from abnormal deposits of fat in the liver.

Toxicity Exceeding the tolerable upper intake level of 3,500 milligrams per day of choline for adults has been associated with vomiting, increased sweating, low blood pressure and fishy body odor. Further, individuals with liver or kidney disease, Parkinson’s disease, depression or inherited trimethylaminuria may be at increased risk for severe side effects when exceeding the tolerable upper intake level.

Populations at Risk Choline’s role in brain and spinal cord development makes its consumption vital for pregnant and lactating women. However, many prenatal supplements contain little choline. Individuals with genetic alterations also may be at higher risk of deficiency.

Bottom Line The mounting evidence of choline’s importance makes it essential that registered dietitian nutritionists remain up to date on this critical nutrient. Throughout the life cycle, Nutritionists can help clients meet choline requirements for good health. Food manufacturers also may take note and start fortifying choline in foods to help consumers meet requirements more easily. Healthy Recipe: Frittata Muffins

Featured Dogs of the Month: Jacob & Jasmine

A Fosterer’s Tale from a CAS Committee Member: After nearly a year of seeing two black dogs criss-crossing the N-340 by La Herradura we were finally able to rescue them. Jasmine is just a big hunk of burning love. We’re guessing she is three to four years old, possibly the mother of Jacob. She is 27 kg, a Schnauzer/Spanish Shepherd mix with coarse black hair. “Jazz” is extremely loyal and protects the house from any perceived threat (between naps). Both dogs have no problem with cats, cars, scooters, other dogs or people. They walk well on a lead. Ideally we’d hope to home them together as they did so well as a team faring off the land. However every day they grow more and more confident so we believe they could also be homed alone. Both Jacob and Jasmin have been chipped, vaccinated and have passports. And both will turn a house into a home.

CAS cat corner The Costa Animal Society (CAS) focuses much of its efforts on helping cats that live on the streets, or in the right circumstances, rescuing a friendly feline who has been abandoned. Regularly CAS is called upon to assist homeless cats which may require veterinary care for infections, illnesses and/or the treatment of wounds, etc., all quite expensive but made possible through your donations. As always, CAS is in need of fosterers for kittens, especially, but not only, those that need bottle-feeding. Also, we do have several adult cats needing homes or foster homes. All of these cats are fully house-trained, neutered, and vaccinated. Additionally we are looking for volunteers to help with our ongoing trap, neuter and release programme. This is the only proven method for controlling homeless cat populations humanely. For more information on this feel free to contact Fiona through the casnerja.org website or on Facebook at: /casnerja Can you help CAS? The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas, so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact! For general enquires and a noobligation chat, contact CAS President Vera Newing on 95 252 9670. Also, Simone can answer any questions regarding re-homing animals abroad. You can reach her on 619 903 815 and speak in English, German or Spanish. If you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful. The monies raised were shared between APA Nerja and Cuidad de los Niños in Malaga. Thank you to everyone who had involvement in the event and who came along on the day to support both of the charities. APA Nerja will use the monies raised to continue with the shelter repairs which are urgently needed due to the amount of dogs we are currently being asked to help and take off the streets.

they were taken into the care of APA Nerja. Carmilo is 43cm in height and weighs 14 kg. Carmilo soon got used to walking on a lead and now he walks very well. He has a lot of energy and loves to go walking with our volunteers. Carmilo is a young, playful dog with a sweet nature. He gets on well with children and other dogs. He’s very friendly. His sister Regina has been adopted to Sweden and Carmilo would too love his own forever home.

Nerja

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
