These include terms such as “antiaging” and “eco-friendly” which, says the RAE, are used even if not understood by viewers. However, it notes that others, such as “brainstorming”, “branding” and “community manager,” have also entered the language.
Foul play suspected in Nerja Mayor's garden fire
Amendments to the regional planning laws expected this month will bring forward the regularisation of many homes in the Axarquía, and wider Andalucía, presently considered to have been built illegally. A paper outlining the proposed reforms was expected to be approved at the end of June enabling the process to restart and a parliamentary bill to be passed this month.
Nerja’s beach restaurants face shake-up
Councillors in Nerja have surprised beach restaurant owners by announcing that concessions on a number of them will not be automatically renewed from next year. Almost all of those affected are on the town’s Burriana beach and the decision means the best known, Ayo and Moreno, which both opened in the mid-60s, could in theory change hands. The three-party left-wing coalition which overthrew the Partido Popular at the town hall last year says the move is the “most appropriate” to ensure a continuous quality service.
Nerja Mayor Rosa Arrabal's neighbours suspect the fire that broke out in the garden of the residential complex could have been started intentionally. There were no real injuries sustained in the fire but a few people had to have medical attention for inhaling smoke. Authorities think that the fire was either started intentionally or by an accidentally dropped cigarette. They are currently analysing things further to find out more. The Mayor was out when the fire started but her son was in and received a shock when he realised the flat was full of smoke.
Costa hotels post Spain’s biggest boost Malaga province posted the country’s biggest boost in hotel guest numbers in the month of April, according to data from the National Statistics Institute. In absolute terms, Málaga was behind only Barcelona in mainland Spain for the total number of hotel guests and overnight stays, noted Costa tourism chiefs presenting the figures last month. In all, the province’s hotels hosted 428,596 guests during the month with a total of 1,574,699 overnight stays.
Warning over bogus Endesa bill emails containing virus
Academy fights English word use Viewers to Spanish television are being targeted in a new campaign to increase awareness of the number of English words which are creeping into the language. The Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), which maintains a watching brief on Spanish to ensure it maintains a unity within the Hispanic world, has responded to a report which claims that the number of brands using English terms in their advertisements rose from 30 in 2003 to 322 in 2015. 6 THE MARKET PLACE
Computer users are being warned of a serious virus being sent in bogus emails appearing to be from electricity company Endesa. If the files linked to the email are downloaded by the recipient, the virus – a type of ransomware known as a ‘Locky’ cryptlocker – can block the computer by encrypting its files, and then demand a payment from the user in order to ‘release’ the computer. Spain’s National Cyber-security Institute
(INCIBE), which has categorised the scam as Level 5-Critical, explained that the email appears to be a bill from Endesa showing an abnormally high amount due, in order to trick the recipient into clicking on a button labelled ‘Consult your bill and consumption’ (‘Consulta tu factura y consumo’).
Concern for Rio Chillar in Nerja
Nerja Environmental Councillor Jorge Bravo and the Council in general are very concerned about the numbers of people turning up to walk the Rio Chillar in Nerja. This beautiful area up the Rio Chillar still has water flowing in the Summer and because of this and the shady rocks and trees people flock to the site from all over the Axarquia and Costa del Sol, sometimes even holidaymakers too. Nerja Council have asked the Junta de Andalucia if they can somehow control the number of people walking the Rio Chillar at any one time but the Junta claims that this is not possible. Already this season there has been a hiker that broke his knee and had to be rescued and it's these type of accidents that cause the most concern. Nerja's Councillor Bravo says, "We are very worried by the crowds, which turn up and head off up the river loaded down with all sorts of stuff as if they were going for a day on the beach. The Rio Chillar is not a beach, it's a very delicate environment which deserves respect, not rubbish, graffiti and parked cars." The numbers cannot be restricted but the Junta is drawing up a protection plan for the area. The plan will provide guidelines for emergencies which are becoming common. It will outline security areas, emergency accesses and protocols. The parking area at the old quarry mill is closed and will remain closed but parking on the access lanes is also forbidden. Visitors will have no choice but to park in the area by Calle Mirto before reaching the river. Large signs will also be installed warning of the risks and stressing regulations. It remains to be seen whether people keep the area nice and clean and free of litter and debris.

international kissing day 6th july Kissing Day aims to make us appreciate a kiss in its own right! No conventions, no social norms, just a kiss. Across the globe we embrace the kiss by embracing someone else. Think of your first kiss ... was it all you expected and a treasured memory or were you too nervous to really care? Think of your sweetest kiss ... a kiss from your child? A thank you kiss from your closest friend? And think of all those supposedly meaningless kisses. Next time I kiss someone I will just think about how delightful it is and not about what it 'means'.
The 3rd Weekend Beach Festival commences in Torre del Mar at the beginning of July and has a great following, attracting the best groups and artists along with international DJ's. It also provides extra activities such as a welcome party, matinee concerts and a great infrastructure with the camping area right next to the festival site which is all set on the beach.

Six original ideas for Headboards Halfway between the purely aesthetic and slightly functional, a bed’s headboard can add a lot of character to our bedrooms. The headboard can be an iconic item the presence of which marks the style of the rest of the room - but which style? 1. Colourful Wooden Planks
The kings of aesthetic recycling and upcycling are undoubtedly planks of wood. Using them you can do almost everything: make tables, sofas, bookcases, chairs, mattresses for beds and headboards...! There are many ways to use them, in the example below the planks of wood have been colourwashed in bright attractive colours to make the headboard a real feature of the bedroom. The planks have also been left different lengths to create an abstract shape.
2. An Old Door
It is so cool and environmentally friendly to recycle old items and using an old wooden door can be a really romantic feature by becoming an original and different headboard. The first step will be stripping the door of the paint and sanding it down and finally choose the colour you want to paint it again.
3. Old Forging Beds
Often in long forgotton attics or storage rooms you can find real gems worth recovering. One of them could be a wrought iron bed that has the headboard built in. They are becoming increasingly fashionable. A simple paint job in black will restore it to it’s former
glory or connect more with your retro side and be daring by painting the bed in brighter colours that give it a more modern air.
4. A Natural Touch
If you want a rustic headboard and you want to feel like you are in the middle of the forest while you’re in bed, an option could be hanging tree branches. Ideally, you want them not too wide so you can hang them easily. You can put them vertically or horizontally, either way you will find the effect surprising and beautiful.
5. Vinyl sticker above our head
An original, simple and inexpensive idea is to place stickers on the bedroom wall above the bed where the headboard normally is. Vinyl stickers are easy to use and have the advantage that, if you get tired of them, you can easily replace them. In addition you can use on a single bed.
6. Wallpaper You can also use wallpaper. It is a great option that goes beyond the bed and serves as a decorative resource for the entire room/wall. It is a perfect idea for those beds without a headboard that lie directly against the wall. 12 THE MARKET PLACE

The Guardia Civil and Security During the middle of May, SOHA held a presentation in Puente don Manuel hosted by the Guardia Civil Officer Juan Jose Aguilera. I thought it was important to share with you the valuable information that was provided at this event.
S
OHA (Save our Homes Axarquia) are still seeking justice for homeowners throughout Andalucia including the Priors who are fighting for some compensation after the demolition of their home in Spain. Juan Jose was then introduced and he explained that the aim of the presentation was to improve relationships between citizens and the Guardia Civil, he wanted people to feel more confident in approaching the Guardia Civil and to make people understand that an active relationship via communication can help solve many problems. The Civil Guard was formed in 1844 and is the oldest law enforcement agency in Spain. In surveys, it ranks as the national institution most valued by Spaniards. As part of it's daily duties, the Guardia Civil patrols rural areas (including highways and ports) and investigates crimes, whilst the Policia Nacional deals with safety in urban situations. Most places also have a Policia Local, the three forces are nationally coordiated by the Ministry of the Interior. But the Guardia Civil have dramatically changed over the years too.
Safety Precautions in your Home Each time you go out ensure that you lock your door with the key and install a security door. If it is not armoured, ensure that it has at least two fastening points, and that there is no gap between the door and the floor. Reinforce the hinge pivots and steel metal angles to prevent door leverage and try and get one with a spyhole too. n
Never leave keys hidden in the postbox, behind plants or in hiding places that are easily found by thieves. n
indication of absence. n
Do not leave money or jewellry or valuables at home
n
Photograph jewellry and other valuable items
Do not talk about your absence or plans to strangers or publicise it - especially on social media such as facebook n
In extended absences ask a neighbour to work with you through the collection of mail, checking the status of housing, some light occasional power, radio or TV n
Do not open your door to strangers. It compromises your safety and allows potential burglars to look inside your home. Vendors, operators of water services, electricity, gas are required to be accredited and you can verify this by phone. If their card seems suspicious be wary and check first. n
Choose people you trust or who have been recommended to you to come and clean or tend to your home/garden. n
If you have recently just purchased the house or if it is a new build and people have had access, it is advisable to change the locks. n
If there are marks near the doors or gates to your home or unusual noise in an unoccupied house, notify the Guardia Civil on 062 or 112. Remember to write down anything suspicious and try to record vehicle registration numbers if possible. n
There are a number of marks used by burglars, these are usually put somewhere outside near the house to communicate certain things to other burglars. n
Recommendations in case of theft

Alert Cops Alertcops is a citizen alert system of the Law Enforcement Authorities. The goal is to create universal access to every citizen so that regardless of language, origin or auditory or vocal disability, you can send the Police and Civil Guard a message about a crime or security issue, whether you are a victim or witness. The application can be downloaded onto your smartphone via Google play or the App Store. There is a registration process and then the service allows the person to send an alert straight to the police from their smartphone. The benefits of having this service for people of different nationalities or someone with a speech disability are immense and also this type of service speeds up information and response times. The application looks like the image on the right where you click on the different options available according to what you have seen or experienced. The application then sends an alert which can be monitored through the Alertcops application and it will also send a google map position to the Police.
Questions offered from Attendees There were a number of questions which were interesting to note just after the presentation. 1) Do we still have to carry insurance documents in our car? The law now states that we do not need to carry our insurance documents as the police can now check a central computer system, but it is better to have it with
you in case of an accident. However, if your insurance is arranged in another country you must have a copy of it.
You do not have to carry the original but if you carry a copy you should get it stamped by the notary.
If you have a licence from an EU country and it is valid and is not expired you can continue with that licence until it expires. After it expires you should apply for a Spanish one if you are residing in Spain. If you have a licence that has been issued for life you must change it for a licence that has been issued in Spain if you are residing here.
3) What happens to a denuncia once it has been issued?
6) What is the law relating to the defense of your property in Spain?
The case is investigated and a report is sent to the court.
It is complicated and each case is considered individually but you can only use self defense.
2) Should you carry your passport/ driving licence?
4) What is the law about dogs in cars? Dogs must not interrupt or impede the driver in any way. It is not necessary to put the dog in a cage, as long as they are secured or tied up. 5) What is the law now on driving licences issued in other countries?
7) What is the difference between a blue 80 speed limit sign and a red 80 speed limit sign on the motorway? The blue signs are a suggestion and the red signs are obligatory.
Exhibition: Fernando de la Rosa 'Ready Assemblages' Asociación Ventana Abierta, C/ Granada, 42, Nerja. Dates: 1st to 17th July Exhibition times: Monday to Saturday, 11am-2pm & 7.30pm-9.30pm In this series, Fernando de la Rosa invites us to be witnesses to a process of reflection, that of a painter confronted with the limitations of his means and making inroads into other dimensions, in an intimate conversation with what it means to be a member of homo sapiens expressivum. Thus we find transgressions of planes and frames, unexpected excursions, forms that coalesce and intersect with found objects, setting the stage for assemblages where the vestiges of painterly line, colour and canvas are ever present. The reference to Marcel Duchamp’s “Ready-Made” invokes the fortuitous, that which we cannot control, widening our imagination to embrace things we daily ignore. The assemblage becomes the deliberate act of someone who is attentive, perceptive, and who interprets, arranges and dismantles, combines and reassembles what is brought to him by chance, by the river of life.

Tiguan: from niche to 2.7 million in 9 years
This all-new Tiguan is easily recognisable as a Tiguan from a distance - but get up close and it is very different... and so much better.
W
hen the original Tiguan was launched in 2007 there wasn’t much competition around and it was regarded as a fairly niche product but now this type of vehicle sells in huge numbers around the world. In the nine years that it has been on sale, over 2.8 million have been sold in over 170 countries, and Volkswagen told us that if they were all tightly packed into an area it would cover 3,000 football pitches, so it’s fair to say it has been a huge success for them. We collected the Tiguan 2.0-litre TDi from Berlin airport and drove on a variety of roads to an off-road course that on first impressions looked fairly tame but in reality turned out to be a bit more challenging. We took a 4MOTION with the latest all-wheel drive system and I have to say it was pretty good on all the different terrains and the hill-hold assist was brilliant. Going over some of the humps and bumps that looked fairly precarious were tackled by the car with ease. The New Tiguan went on-sale in April so is widely available now. It comes with the following trim levels: S, SE, SE Navigation, SEL and R-Line. The first wave of engines that will be offered are a 2.0-litre petrol and the 2.0-litre diesel, but Volkswagen say the diesel will account for 95% of sales. The best-selling car in the UK is likely to be the SE TDI 150ps with 4MOTION. The current mix of all-wheel drive on the Tiguan is 75%, which is far in excess of the segment average which is around 50%. Other engines will also be offered in the near future. The new Tiguan looks so much more in proportion than the previous models. It is 33 mm lower versus the outgoing car, it is 30 mm wider and is 60 mm longer. The wheelbase has grown substantially by 77 mm, so it just looks so much more dynamic and sportier. This longer, wider and lower SUV has stronger, more powerful and striking lines, the precision and sharpness of all the design, fit and finish of the exterior is superb. As you walk around it, it has a very pleasing effect, it just looks so good from every angle. Out on the open road and away from the slightly scary off-road course (well I was a bit nervous, anyway – must be an agething) the Tiguan drove so well. It is quick and quiet and felt so refined. It is the sort 20 THE MARKET PLACE
of car you could get in and just drive for hundreds of miles, get out and feel as fresh as when you got in. On the autobahn it happily cruised at speeds well in excess of those allowed in the UK, and at 130 kph the TDi engine was just ticking-over. We drove both the 6-speed manual and the 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic and my preference would be the manual, it just suited the car much better. The interior is very definitely Volkswagen and shares the same ergonomic consistencies as other cars from Volkswagen. The fit and finish is good and the materials used are excellent and look like they will be hard wearing but still look premium. The rear seat slides back and forth to give either more leg room or more space in the boot. The rear hatch is now 7% larger, so bigger items can be put in with more ease. When Volkswagen launched the Tiguan the amount of competition was fairly scarce, but today it is a very different story with many other similar types of SUV in abundance, including: Ford Kuga, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Toyota Rav4, BMW X1, KIA Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Renault Kadjar, and the recently launched SEAT Ateca, so plenty to choose from. The new Tiguan is built on the MQB platform which allows for more versatility and allows more safety features to be standard. The list of safety systems, both active and passive is endless, with front assist with pedestrian monitoring, active engine bonnet and lane assist, seven airbags, including a knee airbag for the driver, automatic post-collision braking
system, and LED front lights are just a few of the standard features fitted to all European cars. In the cockpit there is also a list of standard systems, all designed to help the driver and passengers and all seemed relatively easy to use, such as the Infotainment system and the satellite navigation fitted to the test cars which proved simple to work out how to use and very accurate. The all-new Volkswagen Tiguan is such a good all-rounder and it's very difficult to find anything you don’t really like or to criticise. The styling is fantastic with those clever lines including the high waistline and that nice shoulder line. The engine choice is limited to begin with but as time goes on this will improve. Overall the quality throughout is first class for this type of vehicle. Prices at launch start from £25,530.00 OTR for a S 2.0TDI 150ps with CO2 of 125g/km and goes up to £35,095.00 OTR for a R-Line 4MOTION DSG with a CO2 of 149g/km. But my choice would be the SE Nav 2WD costing £28,005 OTR. The best according to Volkswagen, which I don’t necessarily agree with, is the SE 4MOTION costing £28,880 OTR. I think the cars with Nav will be the best sellers. As other engines are introduced then the starting price will be lower, possibly from just under £25,000.00 OTR. The prices do on the face of it look a bit expensive but you appear to get a lot of car and technology for your money. This new Tiguan is the sort of car that sets a new benchmark and the sort of car that owners will be very happy to own and drive.
Summary stats: On the road price £25,530 to £35,040 Petrol: 2.0 TSi 180 PS / Diesel: 2.0 TDi 150 PS (launch engines) CO2 125 to 170 g/km Combined MPG 38.2 to 58.9 MPG Gearboxes 6 Speed Manual, 7 Speed DSG New options and features: Bluetooth phone integration system – Standard on all Lane assist – Standard on all Front assist including city emergency braking – Standard on all Fully electric tailgate + keyless entry and start – £655.00 option on all Discover navigation system - £775.00 option on S, standard on SE & SEL

Nerja Bridge Club
Nerja Bridge Club meets throughout the year, but the numbers tend to be smaller in the summer months as many of our members go north to escape the heat. This year the committee decided to hold two events before the numbers declined. The first was a Pivot Teams Event which was held on Saturday 11th June when six teams took part. The winners were:1st: Gill Sheppard, Lisa Soby, Joan Saunders and Linda Burnley 2nd: Colin and Maria Haldenby, Gerry Lawson-Smith and Jetta Lind A fun quiz at the end of the evening was won by Bob Mitchell’s team. A buffet supper was provided by Joan Saunders, Andrea Brookes and Linda Burnley. The second event, a simultaneous pairs against other clubs, many of which are in the UK, will take place on Friday 1st July. Visitors are always welcome.

Tribute to John Cook It is with great sorrow that we have to break the news of the death of John Cook, aged 75, last month. He loved Spain and was deeply loved by every one in Maro, his latest residence. In the late nineteen-eighties he took early retirement, having been deputy headmaster at a secondary school in the Birmingham area for nearly thirty years. Being a live wire, he helped all students in Frigiliana Enrique Ginés school and Nerja´s I.E.S. Sierra Almijara to speak better English. He was a mathematician, a soccer referee, a man of many passions and interests. He loved the quiet Spanish way of life, adored our cuisine and especially fell for this beauty spot called Maro, having previously lived in La Noria and other areas. Wherever he went he made new friends among the locals and helped every one generously. We always remember his sense of humour and grieve his loss, our loss… Jose Manuel Cabezas, head of English at Nerja High School 22 THE MARKET PLACE

Seven Summer Hair Care Steps
Protect your Hair from the Sun
GROUP F
Living in or visiting Spain this summer? Here are some tips to help your hair cope with the hot sun!
It's not just your skin and scalp that's at risk from sunburn. Did you know your hair can get sunburned, too? Protect your locks by wearing a scarf, hat or cap when you're out for a long periods of time. Just make sure it's not so tight that it restricts the circulation to your scalp!

APPLY TOPICAL NUTRITION
Staying hydrated is especially important in the summertime and this counts for your hair, too. Try to drink at least eight to ten glasses of fluid a day and even more if you’re planning to get active. The extra hydration will add muchneeded moisture to your locks. USE COCONUT OIL
GROUP E
GROUP B
Add Moisture
USE SKINCARE PRODUCTS WITH GREEN TEA AND GRAPE SEED EXTRACT
Summer is a great opportunity to use a leave-in conditioner. It adds moisture to your hair, just like lotion does for dry skin. It can also dramatically reduce frizz and it really helps to define curly hair!
Air-Dry your Hair
Because of the summer heat, anything that could further damage your hair is a huge no-no, including blow dryers! Let your hair air-dry and flaunt those natural waves. You should also aim to cut down on the flat iron or curling iron as much as possible.
Use Gentle Accessories
COCONUT OIL HAS ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES WHICH HELP HEAL, REPAIR AND LEAVE YOUR SKIN RADIANT
GROUP D
GROUP A
Avoid having any hair treatment and/or using chemical products during the hot season as the hair often gets damaged and dries up in the heat. And yes, that means hair colouring, too! Dyeing your hair during summer can lead to seriously dry, brittle locks.
Trim your Hair Your hair will be naturally dryer during the summer months, and this can cause split ends and brittle tips. Trim your hair often to breathe life back into your locks. 24 THE MARKET PLACE

Additionally, if you want to alert other users to hazards on your route, you just ring it as you would a regular bell. When you need to monitor a child’s (or even a grown-up’s) fever, TempTraq handles it for you. It’s a smart thermometer inside a single-use adhesive patch, and it takes a patient’s temperature every 10 seconds for up to 24 hours. Then all the data gets sent, via a free app, to your mobile device. Set alerts to instantly know if a temperature gets too high— there’s no need to wake a resting patient. The app lets you share data Buy Now: Order from www.temptraq. com for $19.99 each. Discounts available if you order more than one.
26 THE MARKET PLACE
Users start by indicating their destination on the app, then pressing "Go" on the screen. The paired Blubel device will then provide turn-by-turn directions, by sequentially flashing 12 LEDs on its top – upcoming turns are also announced by an audible buzz, so users don't need to be constantly glancing down to check. Given that city streets can be hazardous places for cyclists, users can alert one another to dangers such as tricky intersections or road construction, simply by ringing the bell. These rings are registered by the app. When a sufficient number of them occur in one location, that area is flagged as being risky, and may even be avoided on subsequent route maps.
If you're interested, Blubel is currently the subject of a Kickstarter campaign. A pledge of £40 (about US$58) will presently get you one, when and if they reach production.

Manish's Zodiac predictions - July Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )
Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )
This is a lovely time for socialising, particularly if you’re taking a break from work. You can reach a new understanding of your role this month and even find help or good advice. For some of you, emotional commitment is more important than ever before, and few of you will be seeking out anything light and fluffy. You’re moving towards some interesting opportunities so no need to push too hard right now. This month brings fantastic challenges or deep questions for you to consider. Partnerships in love and at work are top of the list, with home location, family and career choices not far behind. You’ll have to exercise your legendary patience with others, or even find a way to agree to disagree. Romance glimmers, but if you’re after fiery passion you may have to wait until July 22.
Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)
Sudden opportunities for advancement place additional stress on relationships, especially if you believe that you must wrestle control from a powerful person standing in your way. Getting a raise or receiving a promotion may seem more important now than working out the kinks in a partnership. Enjoy yourself when you can and you’ll realise that what’s really important won’t pass you by and simply try to focus on your priorities.
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )
A stronger sense of timing improves both money and business affairs. You take more pride in your performance. Advancement in achieving an important goal can occur now. Your colleagues and friends would tend to encourage you to reach your highest potential. Finances may be overhauled. New partners met now are likely to feel much like a breath of fresh air. Romantic couples or friends move away from casual and become more like close partnerships.
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )
You are drawn to new experiences and they contribute to your growth. You tend towards unconventional ways of expressing yourself and your creativity. Your hobbies can be out of the ordinary and so can your relationships with children and lovers. Limiting your reach and concentrating on one step at a time helps you through a potential minefield of mistrust and manipulation. Love and friendship thrive in familiar settings.
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )
You might have the opportunity to reach a broader audience. New learning experiences as well as “life” experiences - travel, adventures, contacts with others of a vastly different culture than yours and so forth are likely to emerge. You might choose to learn a new language or take on other studies. You might seek out people who are not as personally involved – acquaintances, groups, casual friends – for encouragement and pleasant diversion. 28 THE MARKET PLACE
Your ability and desire to express yourself is greater now and your personal interests grow.. The responsibilities and demands of domestic life can run high. You are learning how to stand on your own two feet, as well as to meet your responsibilities and to fix whatever it is that you have let slide in the past. Nevertheless, observing how your unconscious operates can help you turn anxiety into opportunity. Your attitude towards learning, communicating, exchanging information, transportation and exploration are undergoing deep changes. There can be tests to your level of expertise and possibly even exposure of your areas of weakness. You need to open your mind to the possibility that a partner is providing you with important life lessons – about traditions, simplifying your life, and responsibilities. Do not be afraid of competition and envy - they will all bathe in tears.
Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )
Your projects will be completed on time and in the best possible way, because your own perseverance, calculation and strategic planning along with the active and positive energy coming from the stars will have no worthy opponents. It is important that you do not take hasty decisions. As for the circumstances, the partnerships and the future opportunities – all of that will be provided to you with a surplus by the stars.
Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January ) This is an interesting time where your connections in the community are strong and taking a time out is increasingly attractive. Going within and working behind the scenes is beneficial now. Expanding your investments can have you researching unexplored territory or far away places. Letting go of relationships that are too demanding will allow you to do more for yourself for a change.
Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )
The momentum of a creative project takes new shape as the month progresses. Moving forward affects every area of your life. Cautious expansion will support the evolving changes you need to make. Partnerships take on a serious note toward month end. Your health regime pays off in more energy and calmer nerves, while restructuring your values will allow you to be in the moment.
Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )
Financial obligations need to be addressed this month. Strict budgeting of both your money and your time are up for review. Clarifying your long-range goals will open doors to real growth. Prepare to get your ideas off the ground. Innovative approaches and new information surface by midmonth, helping you move ever closer to a dream come true. Time to have some fun in the shape of exploring old hobbies or reconnecting with friends.

Sardine - The Small Fish That's Big on Flavour
Iridescent, tiny and flavourful, sardines are actually several different types of small fish not a species, as some people think. Sardines swim in huge schools near the water's surface and are easily caught by net, mainly at night. The fish feed by straining plankton from seawater as they swim, ranking them low on the aquatic food chain - and low in heavy metal contaminants, such as mercury. Although typically just a few inches long, sardines can grow longer than a foot. Found in oceans around the world, sardines are a culinary mainstay here in Spain and many other European countries. They are fish that rapidly reproduce, but due to overfishing, ineffective regulations and environmental impact, Atlantic sardines from the Mediterranean region are plunging in populations.
Cooking with Sardines Fresh sardines are readily available during the summer months here in Spain and they are absolutely at their best at this time of year. But they can also be found canned, either whole or as fillets, with or without skin and bones. Both the skin and bones are edible, but can be removed based on preference. The canning procedure involves washing sardines, removing the heads, cooking, drying and then packing them in water, olive oil or sauces such as tomato. Sardines are sometimes smoked or salted, too. With a full, rich flavour, sardines are considered by many to be the ultimate convenience food. Their appeal spans the 38 THE MARKET PLACE
socio-economic ladder, enticing thrifty shoppers and food connoisseurs alike. In fact, there are vintage sardine collectors - similar to wine connosieurs - who have opinions on the best brands, years and maturity periods of tinned sardines. Enjoy freshly caught sardines at most chiringuitos or fish restaurants here in the Axarquia, straight off the little wooden fishing boats that are filled with sand and loaded with olive wood; the sardines are barbecued on a skewer with plenty of salt.. delicious. Enjoy canned sardines plain, straight from the tin, or mashed with mustard and onions as a spread on crackers or toast for a light lunch. Add sardines to salads and sauces or sautĂŠ them with herbs to top pasta.
Nutritional Qualities of Sardines Sardines are one of the new "it" fish, thanks to their impressive nutrition profile and status as a low-mercury option. Depending on their size, there are typically one to two sardines in a one-ounce serving of canned sardines. They’re a good source of protein and vitamin D. Thanks to their soft, edible bones, canned Atlantic sardines are a good source of calcium, too. Their sodium content varies depending on the liquid used in canning. The American Heart Association recommends sardines in its list of fish rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which research shows may decrease the risk of heart arrhythmias and triglyceride levels and may slightly lower blood pressure. Grilled Sardines with Lemon and Thyme This is a dish that is both humble and elegant, full of flavour, with the glistening silver skin of the sardines crisping in the heat. It’s also not fussy in the slightest, which means it could easily serve as the centerpiece of a light weeknight meal, with a large bowl of salad and crusty bread. INGREDIENTS - SERVES 4 PEOPLE l 1 lemon, thinly sliced
l Salt
l lemon wedges for serving
l Black pepper
l 12 or more fresh thyme sprigs, plus chopped fresh thyme for garnish
l 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
l 750g of fresh sardines, gutted, heads on
INSTRUCTIONS
l l
the pan and drizzle with the remaining oil. Grill for 4 to 5 minutes, then check the sardines; they’re ready when they’re opaque, the tip of a knife flakes the thickest part easily, and the outside is nicely browned and a bit crispy.
Heat the grill until hot. Move the oven rack as close to the heat source as possible (2 to 3 inches away). Heat a sturdy pan for about 5 minutes. Wrap a lemon slice around each thyme sprig and stuff inside the sardines; sprinkle with salt and pepper. When the pan is hot, remove it from the oven and pour in half of the olive oil, then put the sardines in
l
To serve, carefully remove the sardines with a spatula, sprinkle with more herbs if you like, and pour the pan juices over all. Serve with lemon wedges.

Local animal charities A.P.A.Ri.V. (Association for the Protection of Animals Rincon de la Victoria) APARiV Dog Rescue in Rincon de la Victoria is always looking for people willing to adopt or foster their dogs. We are always looking for volunteers to help us with various things inside and outside the refuge. We also have a charity shop with many cheap second hand items for sale in Torre del Mar. In case you are interested in one of our dogs or in helping out please contact Alix at 610902019. Here is information regarding just one of our many dogs: This month we are presenting Noel. Noel is a beautiful podenco Andaluz. He is medium/large in size. He came to us in december 2014 at the age of 6 months. He was so incredibly thin. He was also very scared of us. But that is now all distant history. He looks very healthy now and has turned into a friendly outgoing chap. Noel is still pretty young and is very playful with lots of energy. He gets along very well with the other dogs at the refuge but also loves to be around people. Beautiful all-round podenco. Who is going to give him his forever home?
TAIL (Torrox Animal International League) Further to our thoughts of last month, it is pleasing to be able to report that police activity with regard to animal cruelty is very definitely on the increase all along the coast with further cases being investigated by the Courts. At last it seems that the enforcement officers are taking the cases brought to them seriously enough to proceed, now we have to persuade the legal authorities to back them up with penalties that bite. We know that when Sue Whewell, Tail’s President, visited the Seprona HQ in Madrid last year and met with the second OC, that they fully understand the concerns that many foreigners residing here have with regard to animal welfare, for many Spanish nationals also feel the same, the problems arise in Andalucia because of it’s previously backwards aspect. This has changed amongst the young adults of today, witness the outlook and image of the young from this region now. Their willingness to get involved with the Tail Refuge is

case in point, and that they sometimes bring their parents and explain to them why the dogs are there and how we care for them and try to rehome them, is really very satisfying. Those boys and girls (Teens & early twenties) will not be neglectful of, or abusive to, dogs, cats or hopefully any other animal in the future. Luckily Tail is going through a golden time for rehomes, which is so gratifying because the kennel space continues to burst at the seams with puppies thrown in bins, abandoned in the campo or just tied in plastic bags and thrown out, to which add dogs just lost, some abandoned, and those brought to us by the Police.
C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) CAS FUND RAISING NEWS The Punta Lara Bar invites all quizzers to come and support the Costa Animal Society (CAS) on Friday, July 21 at 7.30 for 8.00pm. Put your pub quiz brain in gear and enjoy trivial pursuits with Quiz Master Terry. Food and drink is available at the bar and the entrance fee of D3 plus all raffle proceeds goes toward helping the animals. Please book with Mark at 635 369 673. The Costa Animal Society (CAS) has a stall at Nerja’s Sunday Car Boot Market where good quality bric-a-brac and clothing at bargain prices is sold to raise funds for the charity. Look for the CAS sign and giant cat at stall 174 located on the right hand side of the market site on the Almijara II urbanization. Thank you to the Detunda Resturant in Maro for hosting a successful fund-raising barbeque for the Costa Animal Society (CAS) on May 29, organised by Joanne and Sue. Despite the windy conditions, everyone enjoyed a delicious meal provided by the restaurant and the music played by the Mundo Cigarra band. Nearly D600 was raised, all of which will go to the CAS coffers and the welfare of animals. continued on page 44

REHOMING NEWS Nemo has been adopted permanently, after being fostered in Germany, following in the pawsteps of his brother Alex. Both are Podencos and were left on the Costa Animal Society (CAS) doorstep nearly two years ago as young pups, since when they spent most of their lives in kennels. CAS is very grateful to our partners in other countries for helping find good foster placements and new families for some of our most needy waifs. Dude, the little Yorkie cross, who was found in the Nerja campo in a terrible state, finally got his flight date to Germany on June 18 after undergoing six weeks of veterinary treatment for a severe ear infection. It was hard to let Dude go as we had fallen in love with his quirky personality but we are confident he has begun a better chapter with his adopted family who will give him all the love and attention he didn’t receive in his previous life in the campo.
family from Norway through one of our Scandinavian partners and his new owner will be flying here in mid July to pick him up. Seven of the other waifs have also been rehomed during the year, so only Poppet remains in kennels waiting for her forever home. Hupa was a young pup who was rescued by a German couple in May and CAS featured him last month. He was quickly adopted by a lovely English lady who lives in Almuñécar and has renamed him Prince. Prince has charmed his way into his new owner’s heart and is now enjoys living with his new older brother Osso.

TURCA Turca is a female Breton mix who was rescued by a Costa Animal Society (CAS) volunteer over a year ago and is being cared for in kennels. We think she was born around July 2013 and she has a very sweet, lovely personality. Turca loves to go on walks, is very playful and gets along well with other dogs, cats and children. She is also quite responsive to people and is easily trained so would make a lovely addition to any family. If you would like to meet Turca please contact Seacrest Kennels on 95 252 1426.

Pinky and Perky were two lab cross pups who were left at the Costa Animal Society (CAS) shop door in a plastic crate a few months ago. Luckily, thanks to a kind hearted volunteer, CAS was able to place these siblings into foster care together. Perky, the boy pup, was adopted last month by young lady from Marbella but Pinky, the girl pup, is still looking for a good home.
PINKY & PERKY
Bambi, Billie and Bobby are three of several young kittens who are looking for either a foster place or a forever home. The Costa Animal Society (CAS) and other charities were literally overrun with puppies and kittens this spring as it was one of the worst years in recent memory in terms of sheer numbers. Please help CAS or an animal charity in your area by caring for one of their waifs or if that is not possible a donation of money, good quality clothing or bric-abrac which can be sold to raise funds would be greatly appreciated. For a no obligation chat about rehoming or fostering a dog or a cat from CAS, please call the charity’s secretary Diana on 679 714 612.
COULD YOU HELP CAS? The Costa Animal Society is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas, so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact! In addition, fosterers are always required to take short-term care of animals until a permanent home can be found for them. Even if you are only here for few months a year, CAS would appreciate your help. For a no-obligation chat, contact Vera on 95 252 9670 for general enquiries. THE MARKET PLACE 45
The Chiropractic Clinic Relocates After 22 years of practicing chiropractic on the first floor of an apartment building on the famous Balcon de Europa, l have decided to move down to street level.
O
ne of the reasons for the move is the fact that l am too often being asked the question, " how long time have you been practicing here? I never knew you were here!" And that is slightly worrying considering l have been in the 'best location' to be found in Nerja! The reason must be, at least partly, that the clinic has been situated on the first floor and most people do not look upward, and also the balcon is very busy, with many different things competing for the eye's attention. Anyway, I am looking forward to moving to a more quiet, but still busy part of town, Calle Chapparil no 10, just across the road from Plaza Trutti Futti on the west side. I shall soon be joined by a Swedish lady, Katja Tornemann, specializing in Cranio-sacral therapy and Visceral manipulation, and l probably need to explain a bit what that entails. Basically the cranium has a large
number of small sutures that all need to move ever so slightly, but none the less very importantly. These sutures can seize moving for the same reason spinal joints do so, namely from physical, emotional or chemical insult.
epicondylitis and all the rest of the 'itis' syndromes. I have had phenomenal success implementing this ingenious technique to the patients coming in with musceloskeletal problems, sport injuries and more or less anything else.
Katja is trained by the famous doctor Upledger in the States that developed the technique many years ago. She has also been trained by another famous Osteopath in Paris called Jeanclaude Barral who developed Visceral Manipulation, which concerns itself with movement and function of the internal organs, that believe it or not can cause a variety of symptoms throughout the body and emotional system.
Katarina, the Croatian receptionist, and myself and very soon Katja, will be looking forward to welcoming you to our new and brighter Chiropractic and Myofascial Clinic (and maybe add, Cranio-sacral and Visceral Manipulation as well). We shall have a formal reception once all the practical stuff related to moving place and organizing everything has been dealt with, sometime in the near future.
Apart from the wide range of therapies from Katja, there is still, of course, the conventional and classic Chiropractic Treatment and also a new treatment form called Fascial Manipulation that concerns itself with the localization and treatment of restriction and contraction of the connective tissue, the fascinating Fascia, which can pull, compress and inflame other tissues and thereby be causing tendinitis, bursitis,
If you have any questions regarding your health you are always welcome to phone us, or pass by the clinic and we can see if it could possibly be related to, and be relieved by, any of the treatment forms described above.

Health, Body & Soul Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle
What you shouldn't be doing at Breakfast! Don't skip breakfast We need to fuel our bodies with the right nutrition to kick start our metabolism, feed our brain and to manage our weight. Without breakfast we lack the energy our body needs, this is when we fall into the trap of grabbing a sweet snack midmorning.
Benefits of group exercise Whether you join in a class in a gym or an outdoor bootcamp, or simply have a training buddy, there are many benefits to exercising with a group. Encouragement from an instructor or your workout buddies can be a key factor in keeping you on track. Another plus is the social aspect of group exercise. You can make friends with similar interests. For me, the most important reason to train in a group is because it's fun. You'll laugh, you'll sweat, you'll work hard and in no time you'll be finished and feeling ready to face the world. Whether it's a heavy-duty bootcamp or a brisk morning walk along the beach, it's definitely more fun when you work out together.
Don't eat too many carbs Traditionally our go to breakfasts are high in carbs: toast and/or sugary cereal. Eating this type of breakfast each day will just increase blood sugar levels for a short amount of time, which then results
in a quick decrease leaving you hungry and your energy levels low. Opt for higher protein options, or learn how to combine carbs with the right balance of protein for a longer sustainable energy source.
Don't just drink coffee We tend to go for a coffee or tea on rising rather than a glass of water. Both tea and coffee contain caffeine which is not only a diuretic but also dehydrating. The best way to start your day, is with a warm glass of water with a squeeze of lemon.
Don't just drink juice Juicing your fruit causes the fruit to lose important vitamins, minerals and fibre. The best way to eat your fruit in the morning is whole.
Don't fill up on breakfast biscuits These are starting to pop up everywhere! Don’t be fooled and make sure you read the nutritional panel as they are laden with sugar‌.as most biscuits are! The worst thing about these is that it sends the wrong message to children. They will grow up thinking a biscuit is suitable for breakfast which is certainly not the case.
A Chocolate a day might keep heart disease away Chocoholics might just have another reason to indulge In what could very well be music to the ears of chocolate lovers everywhere, a new study suggests there could be a link between eating chocolate every day and decreasing our risk of heart disease. It shows the more chocolate you eat, the better your insulin sensitivity. That is, reduced risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol abnormalities such as high cholesterol, high triglycerides and low HDL (the so-called good cholesterol) as well as abdominal fat, which all predispose you to cardiovascular disease. The more insulin resistant you are, the greater your risk of heart disease. Fatty liver is also improved with regular dark chocolate consumption.
Banish bloating with Pilates This Pilates pick-me-up will have you feeling less bloated while also working your back. Over-indulging in alcohol is obviously not a good idea, but if you do so on the odd occasion, feel better and less bloated the next day with this exercise. Lie on your stomach and hold the front of your ankles. Brace your core, exhale and gently lift your chest and knees off the floor, keeping tension in the arms and legs. Keep your knees together as much as possible. Do this gently and carefully. It will work your back, but shouldn't be uncomfortable. 48 THE MARKET PLACE
Oysters an aphrodisiac?
In 2005, scientists from Barry University, Miami, published evidence that oysters were rich in specific amino acids that triggered an increase in sex hormones testosterone and progesterone in rats. But it was found that humans would have to consume vast quantities to see any benefit below the belt! It seems the most important thing is to eat a balanced diet, if you eat foods with low nutritional value, then you're more likely to feel tired and lethargic which will decrease your sex drive.

Qigong
Part three
Article written by Pippa Knight, Acupuncturist, Qigong Practitioner, Reiki Master, Tuina Massage therapist, Reflexologist
My introduction to Qigong
I believe every meeting, connection, is never by chance. I met my Shifu (Qigong Master, “Teaching Father”) when someone close to me was injured during a Kung-Fu class. He only spoke Chinese and given my very limited Mandarin and Cantonese I watched closely. After witnessing the treatment and seeing the beneficial effects I asked if I could watch him treat other patients, through an interpreter he said he would “teach me” a great honour, often teaching is kept within the family in China or shared with a select few.
What is Qigong and how can it help you? “Qigong” means working with life energy. Learning how to control the flow and distribution of qi (chi) to improve one’s health and harmony of mind, body and spirit. Qigong is a holistic system of innate self-healing and includes movement, meditation, self -massage and breathing techniques. Qi (chi) is accumulated and stored in the body. It is best practiced daily and includes standing or seating postures so it is ideal for any age. Qigong can be either active (dong gong) or tranquil (jing gong), more like meditation. Both are seeking to balance your yin and yang. Qigong can help us prevent disease and improve our health. Meditative Qigong (Jing Gong) helps us develop a clear mind, deeper self-awareness, and harmony with nature. The goal is to cultivate both mind and body “xing ming shuang xiu”. Other forms of Qigong include Wu Gong, which refers to Chinese Martial arts (Wu Shu) this helps one defend by anticipating your opponents movement and also strengthens the body in terms of avoiding sports-related injuries. The basis of Qigong breathing is “shun hu xi” natural respiration, “shun” refers to the “free-flow” of nature. Natural breathing is familiar to most people as abdominal or diaphragmatic respiration. When you Inhale you feel your diaphragm muscle contract and move down, pushing your abdomen out. When you exhale the diaphragm relaxes upward and the abdomen releases inward, pushing air out. Masters of Qigong recognize that the efficacy of qigong is a result of one’s inner tranquility (ru jing) which enhances the effects of Qigong.
A Qigong practitioner uses External Qi healing (Wai Qi Zhi Liao) an ancient Chinese method of healing touch and a branch of medical qigong. By including Qigong in a treatment it can for example enhance the healing of sports injuries. For those seeking to get pregnant it can help in preparing an optimal environment for a fetus to develop.
Are you interested in enhancing your chi? Book an appointment or come practice Qigong with me at the beach Call 635 538 441 for more information.

THE MARKET PLACE 51
Nerja
was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Lake Viñuela
is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
