Local News Local News Local News New record year forecast for Costa tourism
“tilted” towards research, conservation and maintenance, but without neglecting tourism or culture through song and dance.
Nerja removes illegal squatters
Tourism chiefs are expecting another record year on the Costa del Sol, forecasting a hefty 12% increase in arrivals this summer, due in part to a boost in bookings because of terrorism fears in competing destinations such as Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey. Already this winter, from November to March, figures increased by nearly 12% or more for arrivals, hotel guests and overnight stays, according to data provided last month by Elías Bendodo, president of the Diputación de Málaga and its tourism promotion company Turismo Costa del Sol. More than two million travellers arrived at Málaga airport, a low-season record and up 14.8% from the same period a year ago. The number of hotel guests was up 11.7% to 1.37 million, while overnight stays jumped by 12.3% to 3.08 million. Overnight stays by foreign visitors showed particularly strong growth, surging by 17.6%.
Nerja Festival repeats its two venue format
This year’s Nerja Caves Festival will run over four weekends from June 24 to July 16, and once again, as well as the main events staged in the caverns, there will be a supporting bill of free entertainment in the town centre. The president of the foundation which manages the natural attraction in Maro said the recommendations of its scientific committee have led to the use of two venues during the annual festival. Miguel Briones was talking at the formal launch of the programme in May, and added that, to protect the environment inside the caves complex, everything has to be monitored to ensure that visitors and performances do not adversely affect it. He said the budget had been 6 THE MARKET PLACE
Police in Nerja have cracked down on people living rough at three sites in the municipality. Local police and Guardia Civil officers moved in last Thursday to evict those who were illegally occupying beaches and buildings. The biggest operation was in the village of Maro where around 30 people were found to be camping on the beach which the town hall said presented a “clear lack of hygiene.” Also cleared was a restaurant and bar in the centre of Nerja. The town hall says the Papagaya bar was abandoned by its owner, a former Nerja constructor, after it was closed by the local authorities in 2014 following complaints of noise.
La Herradura shouts Q for Quality
The Almuñecar council has recently clarified the matter of it's La Herradura beaches following criticism from the Ciudadanos party. The council explained that it had given priority to the Q for Quality beach evaluation system run by the Spanish Tourism Quality Institute. A lot of effort was put into the beaches in La Herradura in order to get them recognised by the system. The certificates are followed up each year following examinations of the beaches by external inspectors. The four beaches; San Cristobal, La Herradura, Puerta del Mar and Velilla are all kept to the required standards as they are the most popular with locals and visitors. The council confirms that blue flags are not the only sign of quality and that the Q for Quality system is the best choice to keep the beaches in the best condition to keep them a tourist attraction.
Mediaeval remains threaten Axarquía golf project The regional government is to launch a study into the mediaeval farmstead which lies between Vélez-Málaga and Rincón de la Victoria. The site, discovered in 2010 but not excavated, is thought to have been abandoned in the 15th century.
The action follows demands by archaeologists who want it to be given protected status because, they say, it is under threat from a planned development in the same area. The Juvigolf project being promoted by Vélez-Málaga town hall includes the construction of 1,500 homes, an hotel and restaurants, as well as an 18-hole golf course, on a site of 1.7 million square metres. Various archaeological groups have pointed to the unique nature of the site, whereas Andalucía already has 70 other golf courses, and have gathered almost 7,000 signatures on a petition calling for its protection.
Police rescue 22 horses and 4 dogs in El Trapiche A massive animal rescue operation saw National Police seize 22 horses and four dogs in an extremely poor and neglected state, just days away from death, from a farm in Vélez-Málaga. The owners, aged 44 and 75, have been arrested. All the horses were literally starving and dangerously thin, with open, infected and still-bleeding wounds and ulcers, many suffering lice and worms, with overgrown hooves. None of the horses had ever been vaccinated or wormed, so vets are keeping a close eye on the remaining 21 in case they develop tetanus or their digestive systems have been damaged by parasites.
The dogs had been kept tightly penned in, tied on short leads so they could not turn or lie down, enclosed by piles of rubble and standing in their own urine and excrement. They had been without food and water for so long that they were skeletal. National Police had been alerted about the state of the animals at the El Trapiche farm by a local shelter. So far, the dogs and at least 19 of the horses look likely to recover. They have been distributed among a number of shelters in the area, since the usual rule where animals are taken to their nearest would have meant the rescue centre serving Vélez-Málaga being overwhelmed.

The Windmills of Vejer de la Frontera

n the province of Cadiz, Vejer de la Frontera stands proud on a low hill overlooking the straits of Gibraltar and surrounded by orchards and orange groves. It is touted as the most beautiful "pueblo blanco" in the whole of Andualica (I'm sure Frigiliana would dispute that!). This small town overlooking the River Barbate is just as historic as it is beautiful though. It was a walled city and those walls are very
well preserved, zigzagging around the town to protect it from enemies. It has a castle, a convent dating back to the 16th century which now houses the Vejer Museum of Tradidtions and Customs where you can learn about the culture of Vejer. Another historic thing about Vejer are the 19th century Windmills. The first windmills were built in Vejer with the arrival of more liberal times in
the nineteenth century when there was greater freedom to undertake individual industrial establishments. Prior to that mills were only powered by water especially in the village of Santa Lucia where the Duke of Medina Sidonia had exclusive rights in this activity. The first mill that was built used the "manchego" style but this type could not stand the strong winds in the area and there was damage to the structure. So after this attempt the "cartagines" model was adopted which was more robust and resistant to the strong gusts of wind. Vejer currently holds seven flour windmills. There is something wildly appealing about these restored windmills, far more charming than our modern turbines, they add elegance to the surrounding landscape. The best preserved are in the area of San Miguel, there is also a wind interpretation centre or museum that can be visited.
The Windmill San Francisco The best preserved windmill in Vejer, it has undergone a complete restoration by the local council and the Junta de Andalucia. All the old machinery that was in disrepair has been recovered and the Windmill can now be used as 10 THE MARKET PLACE

it once was, to grind grain to make flour. The windmill was built in the 1860's and is a circular shape, slightly conical with a roof made of sheet zinc. The masonry walls are strong and 1.5 metres wide at the base, becoming thinner with height. The windmill has two floors, two doors and four windows. The lower floor is used for storage of flour, then there is a spiral staircase leading to the upper floor where the two grinding stones, a hearth and where the hopper controls the amount of wheat being deposited. Outside the sails of the windmill are turned and the gears and the cogs make the drive shaft turn inside, this then turns the grinding stones. The stones crush the wheat to make the flour. The large long stick on the outside of the windmill directly opposite to the blades and sails guides the blades to the prevailing wind.

Swim for life In aid of A local man is planning to make a big splash for charity. Martin Robinson, from Canillas de Albaida, is undertaking a marathon swim to raise money for cancer charity Cudeca. On June 4th he will attempt to swim over 200 lengths of Competa pool. Last year Martin was diagnosed with bowel cancer and after a major operation and gruelling chemotherapy he wants to raise money for the charity. "Cudeca has helped support me in so many ways, "he said." The swim is just a small, personal way to thank everyone who has helped me. I have always been so fit, active and healthy. Therefore it was a huge shock to discover I had cancer," he explained. " Volunteers and health professionals from Cudeca were always on hand to offer help and advice." The charity event is taking place with the backing of Competa Town Hall. Officials have provided a lifeguard and are allowing the swimming pool to remain open in the afternoon for the sponsored swim. Everyone is invited to cheer Martin on and sponsor him by signing the forms that will be circulated by a team of helpers. Come along to Competa pool on Saturday 4th June from 10am onwards. Or, alternatively put your sponsorship money in one of the official Cudeca collection tins at the event. Help make a big splash for charity!

Tips on selling your home First impressions are lasting Potential buyers will probably make a decision on your house within the first few seconds, so the way you present your home is crucial. Well maintained lawns and weeded borders together with clean exterior paintwork and tidy entrances will give potential buyers a positive start. Front doors should be clear from shoes and gardens should be clear from garden tools, litter and unsightly bins.
Clear away clutter Tackle the hall first, putting away all coats, hats and dog leads. Tidy up boots and shoes, putting them away neatly in a downstairs cupboard or shoe storage unit. A bunch of Lilies or brightly coloured Gerberas will look very inviting in the hall and will create a lovely aroma when potential buyers first come in the house. Remove any unecessary furniture. A laundry basket behind the bathroom door for example, is not a good idea, the route around your property should be free from any obstruction.
Light and space Clean all windows and keep the curtains well drawn back to allow as much light in as possible. If you have blinds in the kitchen pull them up as much as possible, and install spotlights to lighten dark corners. Uplighters in the sitting room are a good idea and will bounce light off the ceiling, as are high wattage light bulbs in the hall and bathroom.
Kitchen Firstly de-clutter and then give your kitchen a good clean. If fridges and cookers are part of the sale then make sure that they are well cleaned and are working. Anything displayed on the fridge must go, along with any works of art the children have brought home and you have displayed! If kitchen cupboards are old, consider repainting them. Simply by replacing old door knobs and handles you can give your kitchen a relatively inexpensive facelift.
Bathrooms Bathrooms must be clutter free and really clean. Throw away empty shampoo bottles, and clear window ledges from shower gels, body lotions and deodorants. If the whole family use the bathroom, ensure that the children’s toys are out of sight. 14 THE MARKET PLACE

EU Referendum - What could it mean for Expats' Healthcare, Pensions and Jobs.
B
ritish expats who would like to vote in the 23rd June Brexit referendum have until 7th June to sign up on the UK government webpage. However, only UK nationals living abroad who have been on the electoral register in the UK in the past 15 years are eligible to vote. The UK ambassador to Spain has urged British expats to vote if they can. Mr Manley said, "It is for the British people to decide whether we’re stronger, safer and better off as part of the European Union, or on our own.” He also revealed that the UK voter registration site is receiving 1,000 hits a day from users in Spain. Lux Mundi recently hosted an informative discussion and debate on the referendum with Jennie Rhodes, who has a degree in European Politics and has worked as an MEP in Brussels. She first explained a little about how the EU came to be, how it works, who are the various representatives that work there and what it does. There was then time for questions, which was an excellent opportunity to put various ideas and views forward. We now look at how Brexit might affect expats making their life and home here in Spain and comment on some of the discussions that came up at the meeting. With only a short time to go until the historic vote the impact on the expat community here is still rather uncertain. That's because the effects for the estimated two million Brits currently living in Europe depend very much on the type of deal that is struck if we vote to leave on 23 June. A report by the House of Lords European Union committee this week warned exiting Europe would leave expats in limbo, as discussions over their rights as non-EU citizens could be lengthy and complex - probably not want you wanted to hear. However, the Adam Smith Institute (ASI) think tank argues that the likelihood would be the Union would offer the UK an “off the shelf” European Economic Area (EEA) deal, which would have no impact on Brits at all. "The EEA option would have almost no effect on expats, or much else, because Britain’s single market participation and the four freedoms would stay intact at exit," said ASI fellow Roland Smith.

Pensions
The impact on state pensions for retirees living in Europe depends largely on what agreements would be in place in the event of a Brexit. The basic rule is that British citizens who retire abroad do not get the yearly state pension increase unless there is a reciprocal agreement in place. That agreement is in place in parts of Europe but - and here’s the potential stumbling block - only for countries that were part of the EU before 1981, after which the Government stopped making such agreements. So, retirees here could see their pensions frozen if the UK are no longer part of the EU.
Employment
As a citizen of an EU member country, expats enjoy a range of rights. These include the right to work and the right to set up a business. If the UK leaves the EU it’s possible expats would have to apply for work permits - although this will be a decision for each individual country to make and as such could differ from country to country.
Property
While there’s little chance of Spain deciding all expats must be shipped So, with certainty the missing component back to their homeland, the countries in all of this, let’s take a look at the areas of the EU could make things trickier for that could be impacted if we leave the Brits if they feel so inclined. Residency
Perhaps one of the biggest concerns for Brits living in Spain is residency. At present, being part of the EU guarantees citizens from all member states the right to free movement to other EU countries. Leave the Union and we lose that right. Or at least that’s the worry. In fact the general consensus is that, under the Vienna Convention 1969, Brits who are already living in Europe would be able to continue to do so. Anyone wishing to move to Europe following a Brexit however would have to apply for a visa.
Value of the pound
An indirect effect of the referendum has been a fall in the value of the pound as uncertainty surrounding the issue takes hold. If expats’ main source of money comes from the UK (as would be the case with pensioners) they could see they’re spending power significantly reduced. Earlier this week, the National Institute of Economic and Social Research claimed sterling could plummet 20% against major currencies if we vote to leave.
Nothing is irreversible
If the out campaigners emerge victorious and the EU decides to implement all of these possible changes, worry not - according to the House Of Lords EU committee there’s always a chance that we could rejoin and everything could go back to normal!

How to negotiate roundabouts If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane.
161
APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS
1st EXIT RIGHT
It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take.
Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout.
?
CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD)
LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS
Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout.
This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples.
TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes.

Car News
by Martin Ward
Tesla Model X An Electrifying Day in Holland I was collected at Schipol airport by some senior members of the Tesla European team in a Tesla Model S. It’s not the first time I have been in a Model S but the first time I had ridden in the rear of one and having done so I can confirm there is plenty of room.
W
e drove just over an hour to Tilburg the home of the new European assembly plant for the Model S. This very modern factory was opened late 2015 and produces most Model S's for Europe, with the exception of a couple of countries. Part built cars are shipped from California in containers (four per container) and go into ports in Holland and Belgium. Once the containers are in the Tilburg factory the cars are carefully unloaded and are put onto the start of the production line. The cars move automatically but fairly slowly. The temporary transportation rear sub frame is removed and the proper one is fitted. Then the battery goes into place. The battery was much larger than I thought it would be. It covers the whole area beneath the car from the rear axle to the front axle and from side to side and is around six-inches deep. The total weight of the car is 2300kg with the weight of this enormous battery making up around 1/3 of total weight. The battery is divided into 14 modules with 500 cells per module or block. Each of the blocks can be removed and replaced in the unlikely event of a failure, which therefore means the whole battery will not need replacing. After the car assembly is finished it goes through a series of highly scrutinised tests and checks, with all the components fit and finish checked thoroughly. Around 500 litres of water are poured over and blasted at the car to check for leaks, but
20 THE MARKET PLACE
out of the 500 litres only around 1.5 litres are lost and the rest are used time and time again, all part of Tesla's sustainability. The building is also energy efficient, even having triple-glazed Windows to reduce heat loss. All of the fluids are filled up at the factory, including the air-con gas, but windscreen washer fluid is not added as this is done locally so that the correct concentration can be used for some of the colder climate countries. One of the final checks is 'radarcamera' calibration where this system is set up and tested for accuracy. There is an indoor test track which is just over 1km long, the beauty of this is the fact it is consistent and not affected by weather conditions. After the factory tour we had a good look around the Model X which goes into production in Tilburg in summer. It will share the same battery pack as the Model S. This highly unusual car is like the S and runs on electricity 100% of the time and will travel around 300km on a full battery. It has seven-seats as standard, a huge boot behind the rear seats and if that isn't big enough there is another large storage area at the front where the engine would go in a conventional car. The P90D model accelerates from 0-62mph very quickly at 3.4 seconds and that's with 7 adults on board. It has loads of unique features, really too many to mention but one that did grab my attention was when you get in and press the foot brake the driver’s door closes automatically. The Model X will also tow a caravan or trailer up to 2268kg. The really unique showpiece are the rear doors. They are called 'falcon-doors' and look similar to Mercedes Benz Gullwing doors but Tesla's are much cleverer. They fold and can detect anything in their way when opening and will pivot around almost anything they are likely to hit such as a garage roof, garage side or another
car. It was then time to jump back in to the Model S and drive back to Amsterdam airport. I drove back as I wanted to try AutoPilot and see if it was as good as Tesla had been saying. Once on the motorway, you pull a small stalk to the left of the steering wheel and two blue lights on the dash light up to tell you it is operational. You simply position the car behind another car and take your hands off the steering wheel and the Tesla follows the car in front, no hands and no feet. This is not only very clever but it also improves safety enormously. If there isn't a car in front, you set a speed limit and the car stays within the limit and also within the white lines. If you want to change lanes, you indicate, the cars sensors check it is safe to do so and it changes lane, easily and safely. I managed to drive for just over 5 miles without touching anything, just sitting there. How weird and strange is that? It felt very odd! Every now and again the car does 'beep' at you and then you have to put your hands on the steering wheel to let the car know you are not asleep or possibly dead. But the real clever bit is if you want to get off the motorway and join another then you indicate and with the use of the sat-nav the Tesla seems to know where it is going and all the time you are sat there with your hands and feet doing nothing... truly amazing. And even more amazing is this cost option in Europe is just 1800 euros... yes 1800 euros. Tesla do stress though that this system is there to improve and help safety and not there simply so the driver can put their feet up and take a nap – you still need to be very much in control of the vehicle at all times A great day in Holland... and from the makers of the Space X rocket, the advanced technology of the Tesla, is this the future...??.... erm…. Yes it is…….like it or not……

Breathe Easy Week 13-19 June 2016
The aim of Breathe Easy Week is to raise awareness of lung health. You may not know it, but 1 in 7 people in the UK are affected by lung disease. The theme of the week this year is 'breathlessness' and the purpose of the week is to help make you aware of what can affect your lungs and cause problems. Passive smoking is a big cause of lung disease and the BLF have already collected a petition of signatures to call for smoking in cars carrying children to be banned.
world environment day 5th June The UN has hosted World Environment Day every year since 1972, encouraging people to treat the environment more kindly and realise that it's everyone's responsibility to make the change. Because it's not just us that our actions on the world affects - it will have an impact on all our future generations too. Why not make a 'call to action' and arrange a community clean up, or do your bit to reduce food waste.

Men's Health Week 13-19 June 2016 We all know men are the first to complain when it comes to ‘man flu,’ but when it comes to more serious health problems, men are often too shy or embarrassed to come forward and speak to a doctor. Throughout Men’s Health Week the charity will be holding a variety of events. This year the theme is 'Together we can beat stress'. The chartiy want to promote healthy living and wellbeing in men. They will be asking men to focus on their lifestyles and the campaign is all about healthy living and lifestyles.
On the evening of the 23rd of June at a beach close to you. Every year on the evening of the 23rd June the festival of San Juan is celebrated at the beach with people staying out very late or even camping at the beach. The event is a family occasion where it is common at the stroke of midnight to get into the sea for good luck. There are also bonfires and fireworks and people having barbecues and grilling sardines and mackerel on the beach. Superstition also has it that those who jump over the bonfire 3 times will be purified of their sins and their problems burned away. El Playazo is a popular beach to go to and there are official events taking place on Burriana too with live music and fireworks from 10pm.

TRENDY TECH Mac Book in Pink or Rose Gold as they call it!
The MacBook Apple's super light, single port, 12-inch computer - just got a a little update. The newest version of the ultra-slim and very expensive computer has a faster Intel processor, which will make this slight laptop a fair bit snappier than the occasionally sluggish model that came before. Also, it now comes in pink. With the new Intel Skylake Core M processors the new MacBooks - pink or otherwise - should be taking a step up in power that will make them an even better alternative to the seldom updated MacBook Air (which it is destined to replace) or the bulkier MacBook Pro. And if you like pink (no shame!) the choice is obvious.

Florida-based Stemtech International, the health and wellness technology developer, announced in May that it has developed a new cell phone filter geared toward protecting users from exposure to radiation. The D-FUZE filter uses Stemtech's Vital Force Technology, which purports to "diffuse" electro-magnetic frequencies away from the body. D-FUZE is composed of a micro-thin disc that Stemtech says neutralizes the elements. It can be adhered to the back of any phone.

The GeoOrbital Wheel comes as either a 26-inch or 700c (28-inch/29inch) tyre, and features a system that won't make it flat if it suffers a puncture. The lithiumion battery embedded in the wheel provides a boost to the now-electric bike to speeds of up to 20 miles per hour for a distance of up to 50 miles. A Kickstarter campaign for the GeoOrbital Wheel is up, and it looks like it's doing very well. Shipping for the GeoOrbital Wheel is expected to be carried out in November.
The retail price of the device is set at $950, but there are still a few available slots in the Kickstarter campaign for backers to reserve their own GeoOrbital Wheel for only $649.

Manish's Zodiac predictions - June Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )
Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )
Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)
Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )
Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )
This is a time to follow your dreams and ideals, and to plant a seed in the form of a wish for the future. Your amorous allure will make you socially popular and you would enjoy having many friends or being involved with groups of likeminded people. Your selfless and compassionate nature will make you a valued asset in any group or organization with the goal of helping those in need. You may be re-thinking matters regarding your life path, which is a good idea, but it’s best to think rather than act for now, as your judgment may be compromised. It would be wise to be especially clear when it comes to communicating with authority figures during this cycle; or, better yet, take this time to rethink concerns and grievances before talking about them prematurely. This is a time for dreaming up new possibilities that can have long-term value. You can develop good career planning strategies. This can be a time of dedication to your goals, career, and ambitions and even if gains are not measurable for the moment, you are laying important groundwork for future success. It’s also a strong cycle for discovering your own hidden talents as well as fascinating things about a partner. You will have a taste for the exotic and the spirit to match. Public relations work, promotion, and other such endeavours are favoured now. It is more about how you express yourself than the specifics of what you are saying that helps sway others to your position. There could be special rapport with foreigners and with women if you are travelling during this period.
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )
This can be a very resourceful time, when you make the most of what you have. You will have much energy for new money-making projects, or for stepping up existing ones. You may be overidentifying with what you have and own and you could be trying to prove your worth to others using money and possessions as the means to do so.
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )
It’s an excellent period for looking at your life from a different perspective - a broader one whether you initiate this process or you make contact with others who stimulate you to think about your circumstances differently. Your recognition, when it comes, will rest on secure foundations. A lively agenda is promised as you’re attracting quite a bit of interest, and your energy for making contact with others will remain high. 28 THE MARKET PLACE
Professional and personal progress must now give way to a more defensive approach to life. There will be a greater focus on home and family and your intimate relationships will take up more of your time. For women, beautifying themself would be important and they should have a good fashion sense and love jewellery, cosmetics or tattoos. They would be charming and engaging, a pleasure to be around. You will notice a tremendous increase in your power and influence during this month. Massive gains are possible including with money. You are coming across well at work now, and romantic opportunities, or simply more chances to socialize and network are likely. The idea that you can grow while maintaining a partnership would be important to you. Take charge of your life, but don’t bulldoze over others in the process. You will have a super abundance of energy and needing much personal freedom to do things in your own style and at your own pace. This can be a time of dedication to your goals, career and ambitions, and you are laying important groundwork for future success. There will be some backtracking and rethinking of recent plans, but this is all important and integral to the process. You will have to work harder to make the most of the opportunities ahead for growth and prosperity. It will force you out of your comfort zone and make you put in the extra effort required. Sharing any insights you gain through visions or dreams is a practical and important way to improve the world around you. However you might often be hasty, impatient, and impulsive.
Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )
You are often brutally frank and abrupt with people, and can be quite impersonal when you are pursuing a desired goal. You may find that communications with bosses and co-workers and concerning professional matters in general, can be tricky during this cycle. Strive to be as clear as possible so that you are not misunderstood. Your sexual needs would be strong, and you need a partner who shares this quality.
Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )
You are socially ambitious right now and success may come through your good managerial qualities or some form of artistic talent, or, indirectly through your marriage partner. You have a wide circle of friends, and your mate must be willing and able to not restrict your access to them through possessiveness or jealousy. It’s a good time to feel supported by others, whether it’s financially or emotionally.

Summer has arrived... and what better way to spend those lazy days and evenings than to immerse yourself in a good book? Below are six summer reads perfect for the beach, hammock or poolside lounger. All available in hardcover/paperback or kindle edition from Amazon. Retired cop Bill Hodges and partner Holly Gibney are back for the final installment of the trilogy begun in Mr. Mercedes and Finders Keepers. They’re up against the brain-damaged psychopath who plowed down crowds with his car in the first book. He’s now in a hospital and catatonic - or is he? King brings his special talent for horror to the proceedings. A big summer book in every respect, this novel by the author of Brokeback Mountain tells the epic story of two striving Frenchmen who come to the New World in the late 17th century and make a living as “barkskins,” or woodcutters. Proulx follows their descendants across the centuries, never losing sight of the bounteous forests that are being destroyed. Four English university friends - Eva, Lucien, Sylvia and Benedict - come together and fall apart across two decades in this novel with an epigraph (and a title) courtesy of Camus: “In the depths of winter, I finally learned that there lay within me an invincible summer.” For Faith the one summer she can’t forget is when she fell in love as a teenager – only for her sister, Casey, to steal her man. Now, at the request of her beloved ninety-year-old Grandmother, Faith has agreed to a family holiday – at their childhood beach house, where it all began. Faith hasn’t seen her sister in years but is finally ready to forgive and forget, enjoy the sunshine and relive happy memories. What she’s not ready for is meeting Jake Buchanan – the owner of the beach house – or the long-forgotten feelings he ignites in her. Can Faith overcome the hurt of the past, rekindle the close bond she had with Casey and make this summer THE ONE to remember? Orphaned by a shipwreck, two sisters and their half-brother find themselves with very uncertain futures. All are unusually beautiful and all possess a particular kind of magic. Follow three generations of this family from 1916 to the 1970s, set against the political backdrop of the Virgin Islands which move from Danish to American rule. The Garretts are everything the Reeds are not. Loud, numerous, messy, affectionate. And every day from her balcony perch, seventeen-year-old Samantha Reed wishes she was one of them... until one summer evening, Jase Garrett climbs the trellis to sit by her and changes everything....

Built to the Bone: Why Weight-Bearing Exercise Is Key to Strong Bones
W
hen the topic of bone health arises, we often think of milk moustaches and calcium supplements. But what about visions of hitting the weights, jumping rope or doing pushups? It turns out there is more to bone health than consuming enough calcium and vitamin D. Not only are there many other nutrients involved in developing and maintaining bone, but also exercise is imperative. People who exercise more have higher peak bone mass, and research suggests exercise plays just as important a role in bone health as nutrition. Like muscles, bones are living tissue, and they require stress to stimulate growth and maintain integrity. Just as consuming extra protein without exercising will not result in strong muscles, consuming calcium without exercising will not result in optimal bone mass. Consider astronauts floating around in a spacecraft with little to no gravity — they experience significant bone mineral loss. But when astronauts participate in heavy resistance exercise, bone loss is reduced. Exercise positively affects bone health in a number of ways. High-impact exercise has a site-specific effect on bones, meaning the area of the body worked in the exercise is where the most benefit is seen. Stress in the form of a load stimulates calcium uptake and new bone formation, especially in children. Exercise also promotes stronger muscles and enhances coordination and balance, thus reducing the risk of falling and possibly fracturing a bone. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, lifestyle behaviours affect 20 percent to 40 percent of adult peak bone mass, and only calcium intake and exercise received evidence with a grade A. All other lifestyle factors — including intakes of vitamin D, dairy and protein, and smoking — received lower grades, suggesting they do not have as significant an impact on bone health as calcium and exercise. It's important to note that all forms of exercise are not equal when it comes to bone health. Weight-bearing exercise provides the stress load that bones need to stimulate mineral uptake. While this does occur in both children and adults, weight-bearing exercise is particularly important early in life 38 THE MARKET PLACE
as the most significant gains in bone mass are made during puberty. A 2014 meta-analysis found that weight-bearing activities in conjunction with high calcium intake resulted in optimal bone mineral content among prepubertal children. Exercise is important for maintaining healthy mature bones, too. The impact of weight-bearing exercise on bone mineral density of premenopausal women is significant, and in healthy young men, even short-term exercise can boost bone mineral density. Analyses of data found that the impact of physical activity on bone density and risk of osteoporosis is significant even when controlling for factors such as age, sex, race and ethnicity, body mass index, calcium and vitamin D intake, tobacco use and socioeconomic status. Even postmenopausal women, who are at a particularly increased risk for osteoporosis, experience an increase in bone density from performing resistance exercises. Additionally, studies of osteopenia rehabilitation programs demonstrate feasibility and effectiveness of exercise on bone mineral density. According to the National Institutes of Health, children between 6 and 17 should get 60 minutes of activity per day with bone-strengthening activities three days a week. Bone-strengthening activities for children include walking, jogging or running; playing tennis, padel, football, basketball or hockey; climbing stairs; jumping rope or other types of jumping; dancing; hiking; and lifting weights. While there are no specific recommendations for children younger than 6, the NIH recommends they play actively several times a day. The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends adults engage in weight-bearing exercise for 30 minutes most days of the week, with muscle-strengthening activities two to three days per week and balance, posture and functional exercises every day. Similarly, the surgeon general recommends daily physical activity with strength-building and balanceenhancing activities at least twice per week. Regarding type and duration, the surgeon general notes that five to 10 minutes of high-impact, load-bearing exercises may be sufficient, while 30 to 45 minutes of lower-impact exercises are needed to effectively impact bone health.

Local animal charities A.P.A.Ri.V. (Association for the Protection of Animals Rincon de la Victoria) APARiV Dog Rescue in Rincon de la Victoria is always looking for people willing to adopt or foster their dogs. We are always looking for volunteers to help us with various things inside and outside the refuge. We also have a charity shop with many cheap second hand items for sale in Torre del Mar. In case you are interested in one of our dogs or in helping out please contact Alix at 610902019. Here is information regarding just one of our many dogs:
POPEYE This month the lights are shining on Popeye. Popeye was left at our front door as a puppy together with his two siblings. Popeye was born around January 2015. In the mean time he has grown into a beautiful boy of medium size. His fur really shines like a mirror. Still very young so super playful and will fit in well in a family with kids of all ages. Who is going to give Popeye the home he deserves?
TAIL (Torrox Animal International League) It is with quite some pleasure to bring to your attention that the authorities here are at last bringing cruelty cases to court. Andalucia has had on the statute book for quite some years an excellent cruelty to animals/lack of care law but, for reasons that have been difficult to divine, have not been keen to put many cases in front of the courts. Those who read the local English publications along the coast, or indeed the national Spanish press, will have recently seen coverage following a spate of cases now before the courts. Locally in Velez a farmer and his adult son have been charged over the welfare of twelve horses, one donkey and four dogs

that were taken into care by various charities – Tail taking two dogs. What is particularly pleasing is that this case has been brought by a local Spanish national which goes some way to disproving that they don’t care about their animals in our region. By the time you read this Tail will have been in court in Malaga as the long awaited first step in our case against an English resident from Torrox who committed unspeakable cruelty on a puppy which he threw from the balcony of his apartment block. Over the last couple of years many have asked what happened to this case, now, with the help of the Guardia Civil, it progresses.
C.A.S. Local animal charities Thanks to Vera and all the people who helped her arrange a fantastic Afternoon Tea in aid of the Costa Animal Society on April 29. The event was a lovely garden party with beautiful weather, delicious cakes, scones and sandwiches all prepared and donated by volunteers. Over E700 was raised for the CAS coffers, all of which will go directly to helping animals in need.
NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is pleased to announce the addition of three new committee members. Rita Taylor has taken on the role of Treasurer, Karen Hardcastle will be sharing the fund raising position and Joanna Piniuta is the CAS Shop representative. CAS looks forward to their contributions and the fresh perspectives they bring to the charity.
REHOMING NEWS NEMO is a Podenco who was left on the Costa Animal Society (CAS) doorstep two years ago as a four-month-old pup. After living in kennels for nearly two years, Nemo finally went to a foster place in Germany at the end of April where he was adopted by his new family within a few of days after his arrival. He now looks very happy and content with his new family and it just goes to show that Podencos can make lovely house pets if they are well treated from puppyhood. Another success story is about PEDRO who was rescued as a young kitten from the campo in Frigiliana about this time last year by holidaymakers from Ireland. However, after two months they had to return home and could not afford to transport Pedro to the Emerald Isle. He was introduced to one of our local kennels where several cats already lived and he soon settled in as the youngest member of the colony. After a year Pedro was adopted by one of the kennel clients and has now settled into his new forever home. DUDE is a little Yorkie cross who was found in the campo of Nerja in very poor condition with terribly matted fur and a bad ear infection which had been neglected for several months. A CAS volunteer took Dude to our vet where he was given a couple of baths and had all his knots shaved off, treated for ticks and worms, given antibiotics for his ear infection, and was vaccinated and castrated before being taken to Seacrest Kennels. Dude has now been reserved to be homed in Germany and is awaiting his transportation date where we are confident he will find loving owners who will look after him properly. SHERLOCK is one of the 9 puppies which were left in a box on CAS’s doorstep back in January. Through our Swedish partner, Sherlock has found his forever home and was flown to Stockholm on May 11 where he met his new owner for the first time. For a no obligation chat about fostering a dog or a cat from CAS, please call the charity’s secretary Diana on 679 714 612. 44 THE MARKET PLACE
EXTENDED PUPPY AND KITTEN SEASON As summer approaches, the Costa Animal Society is still in the midst of puppy and kitten season and the numbers of abandoned waifs have been particularly high this year. CAS is still working to re-home three of the nine puppies left in a box in January, as well as two Labrador cross boys who were moved from kennels to a foster place but are still in need of forever homes. The newest addition is HUPA, a three-month-old Spanish Mastiff cross male rescued by a German holiday maker who has paid for him to stay in kennels for a month. Hupa is a lovely natured all-black pup who will grow up to be a gentle giant. For a no obligation chat about fostering a dog or a cat from CAS, please call the charity’s secretary Diana on 679 714 612.
COULD YOU HELP CAS? The Costa Animal Society is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas, so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact! In particular, more fundraisers are needed to work with our team, people are required to help with the feeding of the cats at the numerous feeding stations maintained by CAS, and animal lovers who could undertake a monthly airport run are necessary to take animals being re-homed in northern Europe to catch their flights. In addition, fosterers are always required to take short-term care of animals until a permanent home can be found for them. Even if you are only here for few months a year, CAS would appreciate your help. For a no-obligation chat, contact Vera on 95 252 9670 for general enquiries. Simone on 619 903 815 can answer queries about airport runs in English or German. And despite the tough times, money is still needed to cope with the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. If you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful. THE MARKET PLACE 45
Orchid House & Botanical Gardens Estepona Estepona has always been known as a very cultural town, taking pride in it’s streets. The recently opened Orquidario boasts exciting architecture from the outside. Unexpectedly nestled like a jewel in the heart of Estepona, it is set in lovely gardens, which was once the site for the old Co-operativa Agrícola Estepona (Estepona farmers cooperative). It has three impressive glass domes, with the highest at 30m high, and an eye-catching waterfall at 17m high. The Orquidario, which is the largest in Europe, houses 8000 different species, so no matter what time of year you choose to visit there's always something new to see. The gardeners have arranged the orchids in displays representing their natural enviroments and species from around the world (Asia, South America and native). The displays have been arranged cleverly, winding around corners and leading you towards the waterfall and bridge. There are beautiful pops of colour everywhere to be seen amongst the backdrop of established shrubs and semitropical perennials. It's all very natural with many shrubs showing fruits. It is a great place to spend a relaxed hour or so and also visit the fabulous painted wall murals which surround the site (You can download the mural route from the following site: www.estepona.es/turismo). The location has some street parking, or alternatively you can use the underground parking on the seafront. Opening times: Monday: Closed / Sund, Tues, Weds, Thurs: 11-2pm and 5pm-9pm / Fri and Sat: 11-2pm & 5pm–11pm. (The exterior gardens are always open) Entrance: Free Address: Calle Terraza, 86, Estepona

Health news
Health Fact
The brain is incredibly complex, comprising around 100 billion neurons.
Sugar alcohols and your stomach Sugar alcohols are a popular sugar substitute, especially in things like chewing gum and prepackaged foods. There are many names and types of sugar alcohols, such as sorbitol, xylitol and many others. While sugar alcohols are regarded as safe by the government and provide sweetness with far fewer calories than table sugar, they are not without consequence. Especially when consumed in large amounts, it is very common to develop horrible gas, stomach cramps and other digestive woes such as diarrhea and loose stools. You’re honestly better off eating a smaller portion of regular chocolate than the whole box of sugar-free. Food manufacturers tend to prefer sugar alcohols to artificial sweeteners like sucralose or aspartame for a variety of reasons. One of those reasons is that most people prefer the taste of sugar alcohols. Another is that sugar alcohols can be used to add bulk and texture to prepackaged foods, as well as prevent browning. You would be surprised by how many foods slip sugar alcohols into their ingredients!
Scientists say that having lots of friends is a better painkiller than morphine
So are sugar alcohols good or bad?
Well, for a number of people, even a small amount of sugar alcohols can induce a variety of digestive problems. And when sugar alcohols are consumed in quantity, the vast majority of people will experience gas, bloating or diarrhea. The FDA actually requires products that contain more than 2 ounces of sorbitol to have a warning label. That may tell you all you need to know about sugar alcohols. They aren’t inherently bad for you – some sugar alcohols are actually naturally occurring in plants – but too much isn’t good for you either.
A recent study conducted by researchers at Oxford University has produced intriguing results suggesting that people who have a lot of friends also have a higher tolerance for pain. The research focused on the effects of endorphins – natural painkillers produced by the human body – and how their levels are affected by social interaction. Endorphins are more powerful than morphine and "are part of our pain and pleasure circuitry - they're our body's natural painkillers and also give us feelings of pleasure," according to Katerina Johnson, experimental psychologist at Oxford University and coauthor of the study. "One theory, known as 'the brain opioid theory of social attachment', is that social interactions trigger positive emotions when endorphin binds to opioid receptors in the brain. This gives us that feel-good factor that we get from seeing our friends". The 101 participants in the study were asked questions regarding their social networks before being subjected to a "non-invasive, physical pain test." Participants were asked to squat against a wall with their knees at a 90-degree angle for as long as possible. The results showed that those who had larger social networks were able to remain in the position longer, apparently due to a higher Unisex tolerance for pain.
Sparkles
Good gut bacteria is supported by Coffee, Tea and Wine According to the LifeLines program, which was put in place to keep track of the health of 165,000 people who live in the northern Netherlands. In order to reach their conclusions, the researchers assessed the questionnaires of 1,100 participants regarding their diets, medications and overall health, and also analyzed gut bacteria taken from frozen stool samples. The researchers found that drinking a glass of wine or a cup of tea or coffee can help people maintain their levels of "good" bacteria. Moreover, the gut bacteria of those who eat yogurt regularly displayed a greater diversity. Eating high-calorie diets, on the other hand, can adversely affect this diversity. Having a proper balance of good bacteria has antiinflammatory effects, according to a University of California study. Researchers found that the anti-inflammatory ability of certain gut bacteria varieties can slow down or even stop the development of some types of cancer. f you want to add some beneficial bacteria to your diet, there are quite a few foods that boast probiotic properties. Organic yogurt and kefir are great starting points, but be sure to avoid the processed or sugary varieties. In addition, fermented foods such as sauerkraut, miso, kombucha tea and kimchi are also great sources. You can also boost the amount of good bacteria in your gut with microalgae like chlorella, which can help your body eliminate toxic elements and contains many useful phytonutrients, and organic spirulina, which is rich in protein and is one of the most nutritionally complete foods you can find. 48 THE MARKET PLACE

Help your body heal itself
Part two
Article written by Pippa Knight, Acupuncturist, Qigong Practitioner, Reiki Master, Tuina Massage therapist, Reflexologist
What is Chi? Some ways to enhance your Chi... Chi (Qi) could also be called “life force” or “vital energy”, Qi describes our essence. Your health is determined by your level of and uninterrupted flow of Qi. By allowing our Chi to flow freely our health is maintained. Qi is constantly changing, the Chinese character represents a pot of rice that is boiling, with the steam rising upward. We are a combination of original chi called “Jing” based upon our genetics, combined with the air we breathe and the nourishment we give our body. This Qi is processed by our organs and flows through channels in our body also known as meridians. Along the meridians are points which allow us to access the body’s qi , to help strengthen it, assisting the body in removing blockages, and helping the flow of energy.
Acupuncture and Qigong to balance and build your energy. “Qigong” can be translated as “energy exercise” or “breathing exercise” and Tai Chi “Great energy”, both are movement systems to help enhance one’s Qi and circulate it around the body. Are you interested in enhancing your chi ? come and practice Qigong with me at the beach, call 635 538 441 for more information.
When you are healthy you have an abundance of chi flowing smoothly along the channels and energy pathways. If Qi becomes blocked along one of these pathways, the organ it usually nourishes will not work optimally. Acupuncturists aim to help your body to restore the natural energy flow. Electromagnetic technology has shown that more than ninety percent of the skin points that have high electric conductivity correspond to acupuncture points, first used in China thousands of years ago.
Acupuncture can benefit you. Some key ways to enhance your chi … Breathe deeply, when you take time to breathe deeply you are bringing oxygen into your lungs and feeding your whole body therefore activating your chi. Many of us are not fully breathing. Be conscious of your thoughts, remain positive, surround yourself with positive energy, supportive family and friends, fresh flowers, spend time in nature, make time to meditate for a few minutes every day. Feed your body, choose fruit and vegetables that are in season, if possible organic without chemical additives. Take time to relax, and aim to be in bed by 11 p.m. this is a key time when the body needs to be relaxing to re-energize you. Some of us need more sleep than others.

Nerja
was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

La Herradura
nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Lake Viñuela
is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
