Home & Property News Home & Property News To sell or rent? Advice for undecided owners Many who have owned empty homes are wondering what is better - sell or rent? There is no absolute truth, as it depends on the circumstances, but finding the right answer for everyone can be easy if one takes into account four factors ... Time Currently, the time needed to sell a property can exceed 12 months. Having an empty apartment assumes many expenses: community fees, IBI, taxes, etc... so waiting to sell can prove to turn out costly. On the contrary, renting a home can be relatively simple and quick, affording a profitable situation in no time. Heritage If you decide to sell, obviously the ownership of the property is transferred to the new owner but in return you receive the money from your investment. The option of renting, however, maintains the title deeds in your name and recourse to the property if needed. Profitability Buying a home and then renting it is extremely common. Spain is experiencing a change in trend; while for many years people chose to buy a home, many more people are now choosing to rent. The reality is that the profitability of leasing can be 5% higher than other investments, such as bonds. Bureaucracy Everyone knows that paperwork is tedious and cumbersome. An advantage of performing a lease, as opposed to a sale, is it does not require so many documents and is a fairly simple process. For more detailed professional advice, call any of the estate agents seen here in Market Place Magazine.

Tips before registering your property with an Estate Agent 1) Find information about the Estate Agency beforehand. Inquire about their experience and track record in the market. Are the company serious and what is their commitment to their customers? 2) Advice from a Professional Sometimes people place their property on sale with a family member or friend. Their motive is one of trust and maybe the expectation of a lower price. It is advisable however, to go with an expert to provide objectivity in the operation and leaving no room for false expectations. 3) Request Specific Information on the Advertising of the Property The best agent is the one that offers the best marketing plan for your property. It is important to be in major real estate websites/portals and have an extensive database of potential buyers and realtors interested in cross selling. 4) Check if they take advantage of new technologies The best agencies have powerful marketing tools to promote properties ; photos, videos of a professional calibre, etc. 10 THE MARKET PLACE

5) Ask real and objective information Choose an agent that knows the valuation, market and legal issues well. Inquire about how many years experience they have, partners, training, membership in associations and what advertising they do. 6) Fees Don't just choose the cheapest - look for an agency that presents fair fees for the services they offer, which should include advertising, visits, paperwork and legal issues. 7) A fair assessment It is advisable not to choose the agency that promises to sell for a price well above the market value. Be reasonable and realistic. 8) Mediation Capacity Note how the agent handles empathy because he/she will have to reach an agreement with the buyer. 9) Transparency in Operation Make it a condition to be present in negotiating the price with the buyer. Negotiations must be direct with the buyer under advice of the agent. Discuss contract type, penalties, deposit, price, contents ...there must be complete transparency. 10) Established agents are a safe bet Agents that have been around for many years, and survived the crisis, are the best equipped. They have good local contacts, extensive marketing / presence in the market and multiple portals to sell a

property. All of the estate agents advertising in Market Place Magazine are well established companies with a good reputation in the area.

Cement consumption grew in January

Cement consumption grew in January by 5.2% compared to the same month of 2014, totalling 769,838 tonnes, according to recently released figures. The demand for building materials intensified in January, with the first annual increase in the sector over the last seven years. The rise of public works in the last 2 years and the promotion of new homes were the driving factors behind this slight improvement in demand. Still the volume consumed in January was far from the peak of 4.5 million tonnes in January 2007, prior to the crisis.

Decorative details that will revolutionise the home 4) Towels & Toilet Accessories The best way to change a boring bathroom is through accessories. Place towels in different colours on a shelf stacked like a rainbow - the shades will give a cheerful look. 5) Stylish Curtains They are an essential element for windows, for decoration and to regulate the light coming into the room. Pay attention to your room, is it big or 1) Cushions with Character small? For small rooms light colours One of the best ways to change the style are better for curtains. For a romantic of a space without moving furniture is atmosphere you can try gauze type to change your cushion covers. If you curtains. For a rustic feel you can try want a more ethnically inspired feel, you striped curtains in a coarse cloth. can add bright colours and geometric 6) A Collage of Mirrors patterns. For a more romantic feel, Mirrors are a symbol of identity and cushions should be soft hues in pale give the house a strong character and pink or grey. 2) Lighting Lighting is one of the aspects that should not be neglected in a home. Light is not just useful but it also gives a decorative element and can create the environment and atmosphere. You can change lamps or the arrangement of light. A good idea is to play with indirect lighting points in the lounge to give a warm and welcoming atmosphere. In the kitchen you can place a Tiffany crystal pendant lamp in the middle of the space. 3) Art in the Home A collector’s item is one of the best details for the house; a touch of distinction that will transform a room. Any art fan has a piece in mind, a painting, sculpture but first of all the space has to be right for it to fit in, a place where the piece can be admired.

personality. Arrange them in a collage to give a focus which will look really chic. 7) Flowers and Plants Why not give the house that green and natural touch by decorating with bouquets of fresh flowers and plants? They also look good in every corner of the house, the living room to the bedroom, through the kitchen and the hall. Just add a plant in a room to give a fresh, green air.

A genuine Axarquía secret - Cútar - Part 2 Nobody drops in on Cútar. You don’t come here unless you have decided to. It sits below the curve of a ribbon of road that only a few decades ago was a donkey track. Cútar today Located off the main tourist routes, Cútar is a quiet, charming traditional village. In the shadow of the large church, the white houses and small narrow streets tumble down the hillside. Both Almáchar and Cútar are pueblos blancos (white villages), a legacy of the Moorish rule of the area. Because of the very mild semi-tropical climate, farmers grow mangos, avocados, citrus fruits, dates, figs, pomegranate, guava, sugar cane and the heavy, delicious Muscat grapes. The grapes are dried into raisins or made into the famous Malaga muscatel dessert wine.

The village and its barrios The village is a shadow of it's former self. Today it has between 200 and 300 inhabitants, the population rising steeply during the long summer school break when many dormer and holiday homes fill up. Cútar is perched on a hillside at 330 metres above sea level, and runs down into the valleys overlooking a landscape of mixed fruit farming dominated by vines and olive groves. The entrance to the village has gardens landscaped in the Moorish style. The Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation overlooks it. The church is of sixteenth century Mudejar design and construction, being built on the site of the old Mosque by skilled Muslim craftsmen kept on by the Christians who lacked their building skills. Calle Fuente (formerly Calle Franco) is the artery or main street of the village. It has a general store and a bar

Cútar is divided into four main districts:

La Molina (The mill)

• Barrio Alto (upper town) around the church. • Barrio Bajo (lower Town) below Calle Fuente. • Barrio de la Fuente at the entrance of the town. • Barrio de la Ermita on the valley side

Song and dance

The Region

The village is very proud of its folk music. Regional music is called “Verdiales”, the same name as the oil. The musical tradition is very strictly preserved, the musicians of Comares charged with preserving the traditions. Last year Cútar was awarded its own “panda” status, meaning that it had the right to form and train a group of musicians, singers and dancers in the local Verdiales traditions.

The whole district of Cútar comprises about 700 souls. The region of Cútar covers an area of 19 square kilometres and has several hamlets located in areas Crafts near the valley and its surroundings: Local craft work is a dying tradition here as Salta de negro (Black falls) everywhere. Basket work using cane and olive strips or esparto grass still exists, and La Zubia a tradition of decorative brickwork using Palacios Huerta the flat “ladrillo” brick is still practiced. Monte de Los Frailes There are ceramicists among the villagers, Sugar hill and both ceramicists and artists among the Loma Leon-Pena de Hierro small population of incomers. Statutory authorities are seeking to preserve the farming crafts and there are courses in, for example, the skills of viticulture. There is also a new art gallery run by four local artists, which displays local arts and artisan crafts as well as contemporary artwork by professional artists. The artists´ own work can also be seen at the gallery which is open every Saturday throughout the year.

Parties All Spanish villages have their tradition of fiestas and ferias. The fiesta is usually a Saint’s day feast, the main one in Cútar being that of Saint Roque, the patron saint of the village. There is a gypsy fiesta, the Romeria in spring, a summer feria and the autumn fiesta del Monfi with its fair, craft stalls and sales of local food and drink. Needless to say, all parties involve eating, drinking and dancing. 12 THE MARKET PLACE

THE MARKET PLACE 13

Food and drink The local wine is a sweet brown pasero made from raisins. It should be drunk like sherry – before or after a meal rather than with it. Cheap commercial sherries abound. Cobos is a cheap dry that’s OK after a couple of glasses and very good in sauces, stews and paellas, imparting an authentic Andalucían flavour to food. Experiments in table wine, both red and white made by freezing grapes before fermenting can be found in Juani’s bar next to the church in Almáchar. Dishes typical of the region can be found in the bars that seem to spring up and die in the village. There is the ubiquitous paella, chorizo sausage with chick peas or beans, a rich stew of cabbage and pigs’ unmentionable bits, tortilla, fried fish and salad, grilled pork or chicken or meat 'in sauce' and so on. At party time there is a medley of doughnut style pastries – enough to convince anyone still in doubt that the Mediterranean diet largely consists of sugar and fat. Also on sale are 'pasas'. These are raisins or fresh muscatel grapes steeped in dry anis or aguagarde for a month or two. You, dear reader can take some raisins home and soak some yourselves, though they don’t taste so good eaten in grey sleet as they do in the sweet Andalucian twilight. Today Cútar remains a small, authentically rural Spanish community that demonstrates Moorish traditions in its customs and architecture. The streets are built for donkeys not cars. They are steep and often stepped. Much of the paving and cobbled pathways, in recent times covered in concrete, are now being restored, and the village is sensitive to the value of its Arab heritage. The Cútar Koran is the second most ancient in Spain and testifies to the antiquity and heritage of the village itself, as does

the 'fountain of paradise' and the sixteenth century church with its unique Mudejar frescos. We can expect a new museum to open this year. There are wonderful views from the terraces which overlook the mountains and hills of the Axarquía. There is a pharmacy, a bakery, two bars and the traditional way of Andalucian life in Cútar. Banks, cash machines, supermarkets, restaurants and medical service are 10 minutes drive away in the neighbouring village of Benamargosa. This village is genuinely unspoilt - aspects of its history can be found in every part of it and yet it is still unknown to the tourist trade. It is one of the few remaining genuinely authentic secrets of the Axarquia.

Registering your vehicle in Spain

Spanish license plates and registration document. Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ. eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for

161

an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40E for petrol-engine cars and 56E for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you.

First Driving Impressions – Audi TT & TTS Roadster, Global Press Event, Majorca. The TT Roadster comes not long after the launch of the TT Coupe. I remember well the Coupe launch up in Scotland. It didn’t stop raining all the time we were there, roads were washed away, landslides, part of the route had to be abandoned, it was just horrible weather. So Audi chose the Mediterranean Island of Majorca to drive the TT Cabriolet. What could be nicer, a convertible in the sun in February? Think again!

W

e arrived at Palma airport with grey skies and light winds, then it got worse, much worse. The whole time we were in Majorca it did not stop raining once - not once - and it wasn’t just your normal, everyday rain, it was torrential most of the time, like somebody chucking a bucket of water at you! The TT’s design has changed little since it was launched in 1999. It was handsome and pretty then, and is so much nicer now, having certainly stood the test of time. The second generation went on sale in 2006 and now the MK3 has arrived with a new platform, chassis, body and interior designs. Despite it being a completely new car throughout it is every bit, and looks every bit, a TT - a stunning looking sports car. We drove a selection of engines and gearboxes on the launch, and whilst the TTS with its 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engine that produces 310ps, and goes from 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds, coupled to the Audi Quattro system, is quick, responsive and very nice to drive, and priced from £41,085 OTR, it would not be my first choice. I would be torn between the 2.0-litre TDI Ultra diesel that produces 184ps, has a C0² emission figure of 114g/km, and in real life driving easily achieves over 50mpg with prices start from £31,995 OTR - or the 2.0 TFSI 230ps with C0² of 140g/km and costs £32,045. A Quattro version with S Tronic is available with this petrol engine, but does bump up the cost by around £3,000. With the sat-nav set up, we left the airport and headed towards Palma Nova, then to the East Coast, and then up to the hills on the North West coast. This is normally a very pretty part of the island, but seeing any of it was difficult in the heavy rain, fog and all the spray from the road. And then it got worse. The temperature dropped and it started snowing - yes, snow in Majorca in February. But the heated leather seats and some very nice neck warmers, where hot air is blown directly onto you from the head rest, kept us nice and cosy and warm. The pouring rain had managed to wash many pine needles from the overhanging trees onto the road beneath our wheels, and

18 THE MARKET PLACE

what with these and all that water, the road was like ice, as the pine needles act like ball-bearings - it was slippery to say the least. No heroic stuff in these conditions, just a nice leisurely drive. Testing of the cars super handling or road-holding was simply too dangerous. We did manage to get the roof down once, as we went through a tunnel near Inca, and proved it really does go up or back down again in 10 seconds, and at speeds of up 31mph. This electrically operated roof has three layers and has acoustic and temperature insulation to keep the interior quiet and warm, and as we found out, very dry as well. The sat-nav and other Multi Media systems are now in a 12.3’’ high resolution LED display in front of the driver in the instrument binnacle and is so clear and concise. But being in front of the driver, this makes it almost impossible for the passenger to see, and when you are navigating around places you are not familiar with, it is always good for your co-pilot to be able to help and give advice – all in all, a very nice system, but maybe in the wrong place. The all-new TT Roadster is available in two trims; Sport and S line with prices starting in the UK from £31,955 OTR. Like most Audi’s you would need to spend a few hundred more in getting the right spec for your needs, such as those very nice leather heated seats and neck warmers, which are a must. The TTS is just available in model – the TTS, costing from £41,085 for the 6-speed manual, which has a C0² figure of 169g/km. This new Roadster from Audi has just got better, a truly great car to drive. It looks much crisper and is just outstanding quality throughout, an exceptionally well put together two-seater which has rock-solid residual values to match its rock-solid handling. The roof proved to be absolutely water tight, with not a drop of rain getting into the car - a superb bit of kit. It would have been nice to have got the roof down, but was still a very enjoyable car to drive despite the appalling weather.

Getting your kids started skiing

Skiing is a lifelong sport. While you can learn at any age, kids have the advantage of being flexible, nimble and relatively fearless. If you live here there is also the fantastic advantage of being able to head up to Sierra Nevada, only 1½ hours drive away from the eastern Costa del Sol, meaning you can make things cheap by just visiting for a day. There are children's ski schools at Sierra Nevada or if you are a competent skier you can teach them yourself. With good instruction, many kids can ski independently on a beginners slope in just a few days.

Keep them Warm Never underestimate the weather; a sunny day can quickly turn into cloud, strong wind and snow in the mountains. Dress your kids for the mountains with a proper outfit; a waterproof/breathable jacket, bib style insulated, waterproof pants are usually best for young children or a one-piece ski suit provided they are well beyond the potty training stage! Long underwear, a neck warmer made out of merino wool or fleece, long ski socks and mittens are best for warmth.

the mountain, it makes your trip that little bit more reasonable.

Skis and Boots You should find that today's skis are wider and allow for easier learning than in the past. Beginners' skis are soft for all mountain terrain. Ski length should be chin to nose high, the shorter the ski the easier to turn. The bindings should come with the ski and the ski technician should adjust the DIN setting for the childs weight, height and ability. Young skiers should have a boot with rear entry but heavier, older kids might be able to have a 4 buckle flex boot when they get a bit more advanced. The ability to flex the boot is key for developing technique. Have your child put the boot on, bend his knees and push forward. If the boot won't flex the boot is too stiff. Try on multiple shell styles to be sure. For a recreational fit, pull out the liner and have the child put his foot in the shell - with the foot pushed as far forward as it will comfortably go. You should be able to insert 3 fingers between the heel and shell. Any more and the fit is too sloppy; any less and there's not enough room to grow. Make sure a child tries on a boot with the ski socks he or she is planning to wear on the slopes. Tip: After a day of skiing, pull out the liners and let them dry. Feet sweat - and even on a cold day, liners absorb moisture. A wet liner won't dry while inside of a boot unless you use a boot dryer.

Poles

Ski Gear: Rent or Buy ? While it is more convenient to own your own ski gear, there are lots of places to rent ski gear in Sierra Nevada and for kids it makes a lot of sense. If you are only going a couple of times a year, kids grow out of skis and boots very quickly so renting is better. Kids should wear a helmet as they offer protection from falls and collisions with other skiers or boarders. Helmets are also much warmer than hats and the venting is so good they don't get sweaty on those warm sunny days at Sierra Nevada, especially March. Go on to the Sierra Nevada website and join the Sierra Nevada ski club for good discounts on renting gear, parking, food on 20 THE MARKET PLACE

Beginning skiers should not use poles. Poles used too early in the game will take away from a child's ability to make turns. Once a skier can make a wedge turn with a parallel finish, reward him or her with their own poles.

Teaching tools A few helpful accessories include "edgie wedgies" that connect ski tips, making it easier for the child to hold a wedge or snowplow shape; a harness with long leashes that extend from the beginner to an experienced adult to help a child develop confidence and control speed; or wooden poles that allow the beginner to ski to the side of you, not between your legs.

Tips for Starting Out Make learning fun. Hot chocolate or "patatas fritas" on the mountain are great

incentives for a full morning of skiing. Pack snacks in your pocket for the chairlift. Treats go a long way when encouraging children to make good turns. Practice moving around on skis. Find a gentle snow-covered slope at the resort for walking around in downhill boots and skis. You don't need a chairlift to practice walking up and skiing down. Bring a pack. When skiing with small children, carry an extra pair of underwear (or nappies), baby wipes and mittens. Even older kids tend to get their mittens wet by lunchtime. Also keep a tube of suncream in your pocket. Play games. The "I-Spy" game makes time on the chairlift go faster. If the weather is cold and you need a diversion, try singing a few favourite songs. Focus on turns. Stopping is important, but turning will get kids skiing. Turning happens from the feet, knees and hips. A common mistake is telling kids to put their weight on one ski to initiate a turn. Instead, work on an athletic stance and getting skis on edge. Follow the leader. To help children initiate turns, play follow the leader. The leader can pretend to be a favourite animal, and each child picks a different animal. When turning, make noises to imitate that animal. The bottom line is making it fun - whether there's the roar of a tiger to announce each turn or the reward of an M&M for each zigzag they make on the slope. Talk with lift operators. They are on high alert for beginning riders. If you are riding with a child (or any beginner), let the lift operator know. They can slow down the oncoming chair and help you board (and dismount). To assist small children, lift them by the armpits. Teach them to always put the safety bar down.

Local News Local News Local News Missing three-year-old's body found and mother's boyfriend arrested The body of a threeyear-old child who went missing in Rincón de la Victoria last month has been found in a reservoir in the Los Montes rural area close to the town. His mother's partner, 23, was arrested after reporting the infant's disappearance and is suspected of being responsible for his death. Search operations were hindered by the boyfriend having given different versions as to where little Alejandro was last seen. Initially, he was reported as having gone missing in a shopping centre in Rincón de la Victoria, although CCTV footage revealed no sign of either the little boy or his mother's boyfriend. The accused then claimed he had disappeared on the beach, near the cliffs off the Cala del Moral, at a time when high tides and strong currents prevailed. But the boy was found in the reservoir which is mainly used to put out forest fires. He is thought to have died through drowning, although a post mortem was still being carried out to ascertain the direct cause of death. The news was broken to his mother by trained emergency and disaster psychologists who went to her home in the El Palo district of Málaga city. She is said to have been sedated. A tutor from the nursery school where the little boy went daily is being interviewed by the Guardia Civil to determine whether the mother's boyfriend collected him on Monday, and whether he was authorised to do so. Málaga city council has condemned the infant's death and expressed its concern about the 'climate of violence' which appeared to be afflicting today's society. The child's fate has sent shockwaves through the city, and also through the town of Rincón de la Victoria.

Death of dolphin in Nerja

An organisation who care for endangered sea creatures called CREMA was alerted when a dolphin was found dead 22 THE MARKET PLACE

on Calahonda beach near the Balcon de Europa in Nerja. They took the creature to their facility in order to analyse it and investigate what caused its death. The dolphin weighed 115kg and was 180 cm long. Crema think that the animal had parasites on its tail so it could have picked up an infection but it is the second dolphin that has been found dead this week - the other was found in Rincon de la Victoria a few days earlier. The experts need to be sure exactly what happened and if the two incidents are related.

New fire station for Nerja 1.2 million project set to go out to tender with 12-month construction timeline

Foreigners to be removed from the Nerja Padron if they do not Renew before 31st March All Foreigners registered on Nerja Town Hall Padron population list must renew their inscription every 2 years. When this time has passed, they will be deregistered. The Padron is very important as according to the number of persons registered, the town will be able to have more doctors, health centres, police, schools, firemen, infrastructure and other services. Every year the Town Hall receives approx. 150 euros per person registered on the Padron from the central and local government. The government establishes that every 2 years all foreigners must confirm that they still continue on the Padron. Otherwise they will be considered as not living in the town any more. Consequently, they would not figure on the population list for the town to receive grants. Also you will lose all your benefits and rights. If by March 31st, foreigners who are on the renewing list and have not come to confirm their Padron, will be deregistered, meaning Nerja could lose around 2,200 inhabitants. This means that Nerja will not receive an important amount of money to give services to the town. It is very important for the Town Hall not to lose these people!. To avoid queuing, the best way to check if you have to renew your Padron is by sending an email to the Town Hall Foreigners’ Department at: extranjeros@ nerja.es stating your name and NIE number. We will check and email you back. Also you can see Jacky at the Foreigners’ Department on the ground floor, or see Angeles or Manolo at the Main Reception also on the ground floor (on the left). Please bring a photocopy of any kind of identification; Preferably the NIE certificate, but also you can make a copy of your passport, identity card, driving licence, medical card, etc. We will confirm if you have to renew your Padron and if so, you just have to sign a form. Opening Hours Foreigners Department: Monday to Thursday from 10:00 to 13:30 Main Reception: Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 14:00

An announcement published in the Official Bulletin of the province of Málaga has finally given the green light to a long-running project to construct a new fire station in Nerja. The facility is to be built at the junction of the N-340 coast road with the MA-5105, the autovía access road, and will serve Torrox, Frigiliana and El Morche, as well as Nerja and Maro. The publication of the project’s details enables Nerja Town hall to start the process of putting the work out to tender. The duration, as defined in Edict 622/2015, will be 12 months and the project has a budget of over 1.2 million euros, of which Nerja will contribute 43 per cent, or 534,000 euros, with the provincial government funding the remainder.

East coast towns request Málaga-Nerja train The five mayors of municipalities on the eastern Costa del Sol have re-launched demands for a railway to link Málaga with Nerja. Along with their association, the Mancomunidad, they have called for the Public Works Ministry to consider the requirements of the east coast of the province. The mayors of Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga, Algarrobo and Torrox and Nerja are supporting the demand, which Mancomunidad president Óscar Medina said last week would be presented shortly. They want the scope of the Ministry’s present study of the extension of the Cercanías line to Marbella – which is the only Spanish town with a population of more than 100,000 which does not have a rail link – to be expanded to consider a coastal line stretching all the way from Manilva to Nerja.

Currently, Internet Service Providers can keep data where it has been processed for normal business purposes such as billing or marketing for 12 months, regulated by the Data Protection Act 1998.

EAT SEASONABLY... Pumpkin Seeds

It's time to take a closer look at something inside the pumpkin that often ends up in the bin - the seeds. Toasted pumpkin seeds can be a healthy snack alternative... Nutritional Data for Pumpkin Seeds

• Calories : 158 kcal • Fat : 13.9 g • Carbohydrates : 3 g • Protein: 8.6 g • Fibre: 1.7 g

Approximately 75% of the fats in a serving of pumpkin seeds are heart-friendly mono- and polyunsaturated fats. They are also a rich source of phytosterols, which have powerful cholesterollowering properties. Why bother with fancy butter-like imitation spreads with added sterols when phytosterols already exist in these tasty little seeds?

Pumpkin seeds are also rich in the minerals manganese and magnesium. Manganese is a nutrient involved in numerous metabolic processes and protection against oxidative damage, while magnesium plays an important role in bone health and cardiovascular health. In addition, pumpkin seeds are good sources of phosphorus, iron, copper, Vitamin K, and zinc. That's a whole lot of nutrients packed into a tiny package! Because of their nut-like flavour and fat content, pumpkin seeds make a beautiful substitute for nuts in recipes such as pesto when you are cooking for someone with a nut allergy.

Butternut Squash Soup with Pumpkin Seeds

Styrian pumpkin seed oil, Austria’s dark green culinary treasure, boasts a deeply nutty flavour. If you can’t find it, other nut oils, like walnut or hazelnut oils, make a tasty substitute.

Preparation time: 1 hour Serves 6 as an appetizer

Directions 1. In a large lidded pot, melt butter over medium heat and

sauté onion, ginger, and garlic until soft, about five minutes. Add Chinese five-spice powder and some black pepper to taste, and sauté for another minute. Add squash and the chicken stock, bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, cover with lid slightly ajar, and cook until the squash is extremely tender, about 30 minutes.

2. Cool slightly, and working in batches, purée the soup in a blender. To avoid splattering, remove cap from lid and cover with a dishtowel so heat can escape. Adjust seasoning and garnish each bowl with a drizzle of pumpkin seed oil and sprinkle of pepitas. 34 THE MARKET PLACE

Ingredients: 2 tablespoons organic, unsalted butter n 1 organic onion, roughly chopped n 1 tablespoon minced organic ginger n 2 organic garlic cloves, minced n 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder n 1 ¾ pounds peeled and cubed organic butternut squash (5 to 6 cups) n 4 cups homemade chicken stock or store-bought n

Horoscope March Aries

Mar. 21st - Apr. 20th

You're overbooked, but you tell yourself it's okay. A full schedule makes you feel important. It also keeps your mind off other things. You're afraid that if you slow down for even a moment, certain ideas, memories or people might creep through your open door and ruin everything. Find a quiet moment in your self-induced chaos to sit down and address this fear.

May 22nd - June 21st

For you, the goal is everything. The best method is whatever works. Thanks to the Stars, your desired results are falling neatly into place. You notice a big difference from what happened during the last few days, while last week feels like another lifetime. You seem to have grown in so many ways. Ideas are tangible and easy to shape once you hold them in your hands.

Leo

A picture paints a thousand words and actions speak louder than those words, too. These old sayings could become your mantra as you recognize the time for talking is long past. You might as well get this thing off the ground if nobody else is doing anything about it yet. Jump-start your cause with a high-profile gesture.

Gemini

July 23rd - Aug. 21st

Libra

Sept. 24th - Oct. 23rd

Sagittarius Nov. 23rd - Dec. 22nd

Aquarius 21st - Feb. 19th

You'd like to think of yourself as the answer person, but you'll settle for being the resident idea generator. Brilliant thoughts flow through you as naturally as breathing. Idle words fall from your mouth with the ringing declaration of truth. If friends and associates are wise, they'll harness your brainpower to drive engines of commerce or education. You deserve a lot more than you're currently getting. Shrink the scale of your ambitions. Break each task down into many small, double steps. The secret to thinking small is celebrating intricacy rather than dissolving into pettiness. As long as you know and love what's important, you'll go far. The inner workings of most systems fascinate you. Biographical and administrative details turn anyone from a faceless drone into a multifaceted work of art. Hedonism and altruism struggle for your soul. Life is good, but are you required by some unwritten cosmic law to spread the wealth around when you have it? Should you serve yourself or should you be of service to someone else? Understand that these things aren't mutually exclusive. When you help a needy or desiring friend, it's a lot more fun than you can imagine.

You won't accept any verbal offer until it's followed up with hard copy and until you've had a chance to fully absorb it. Before selling out to the first bidder, remember the failed trickle-down experiment in economics and the old 'greed is good' mantra. Today's easy money could lead to tomorrow's spiritual hardship. Fiscal conservatives gain the cautious respect of their peers. Risk-takers find themselves without followers. Have the machines finally taken over? Is talking to your computer a more soulful experience than talking to your co-workers? The problem gets deeper the more you look at it. Institutional communications, such as bureaucratic paperwork or a complex voicemail system, are testing your patience. Anyone seeking a job or even romance will probably run head-on into a wall of formalities. Don't give up too soon. Your astrological neighbours would rather do than say, but for you it's all about talking a good game. In your situation, words are more valuable than actions right now. Through presentation, plea or outright heckling, you get the attention of an authority figure. Some would fear punishment for such an outburst, but you're banking on the chance that special notice equals special treatment. Ownership is an illusion. Titles and deeds are available on a firstcome, first-served basis. Passion is nine-tenths of the law. If you want something badly enough, you can get it by making a pest of yourself. Recognize this trick when it's used on you. Someone might threaten your own rights with a loud voice and a comic-book villain scowl. You're minding your own business when the storm of words breaks over you. Incoming waves of gossip and chitchat stir up your quiet, simple environment in a rising tide of noise pollution. Walking away from the problem is useless. You can endure this easily when you remember the campers rule of thumb: rubbish in, rubbish out. Get a grip as unsupported rumours swirl around you. You have a good understanding of major deals and complex social movements. You're also feeling a little superstitious about things that fall outside of these theoretical boundaries. Pick up your feet when you walk, just in case it's all true about stepping on pavement cracks. Buyers and sellers are able to make informed decisions and maybe even close the deal.

LetsGoNorth meets LetsGoSouth LetsGoNorth meets LetsGoSouth is a novel new tourism initiative. It is the brainchild of Tina Irving, a long time aficionada of Spain who has owned property, lived and worked in Spain on and off for over 30 years.

S

he ran a solar energy business in Competa in the 1980s and early 1990s. Tina has successfully run the LetsGoNorth tourism development sector since 2010. It grew out of the Dunnet Head Educational Trust which was established in 2003 to raise the profile of Dunnet Head as the most northerly point of the UK mainland where Tina and her partner, Brian Sparks, still have a bed and breakfast, campsite and tearoom which is franchised out. The idea of the project is to identify parallels between Spain and Scotland and to find historical and cultural links and build “hubs” of information about each area identified. In Spain, Castril, the Axarquia and Marbella have already been identified as “hubs” and will shortly appear on a new web site which is currently under construction.

Historical links include the demise of the Spanish Armada which was shipwrecked off the coast of Scotland and there are descendants of those brave sailors living on the island of Westray (one of the Orkney Islands) to this very day. Another very interesting link is the story of the Duchess of Atholl of the Scottish aristocracy who wrote “Searchlight on Spain” in 1938 and gives a stirring account of how she assisted her fellow countrymen to take part in the Spanish Civil War. A more gruesome link is that of Teba. Robert the Bruce’s heart was cut out and is in a silver cask in Teba which is north of Ronda and east of Ardales. Of course, in Galicia kilts are worn and you will often hear bagpipes played.

'The idea of the project is to identify parallels between Spain and Scotland and to find historical and cultural links...'

There are many parallels…. The one foremost in the entrepreneur’s mind is the North Highland Way, a 180 mile walking route across the top of Scotland from John o Groats to Cape Wrath and project managed by LetsGoNorth. The route is still under development and you can take a challenge on it this year! The Senda Litoral is also a coastal route taking in the coast of Spain from launched by the Diputación de Málaga to connect 180 kilometres of the province and to unite the 14 municipalities. The difference is that the North Highland Way is a private initiative supported by many local businesses.

Tina has already teamed up with Manuel Garcia of Smart Holidays Andalucia. Manuel has been doing in Spain what Tina has been doing in the north of Scotland – developing tourism. He is the perfect partner. A graduate of Malaga University and of course a wealth of local knowledge. A salesman has been brought on board to cover Almuñecar, Torrox, Torrox Costa and Nerja, and a salesperson is sought to cover the Competa, Canillas de Albaida and Archez. Good Spanish preferred. How to change sensitive winter skin into a healthy spring glow without harsh chemicals Winter can turn the mildest skin problem into a major annoyance. Here, some industry experts explain how these six natural beauty ingredients can soothe bad skin, ezcema and even psoriasis or hives. Argan oil Sarah Jagger, beauty expert and celebrity makeup artist, swears by argan oil for dry skin and flaky scalps. “It’s so fantastic for both hair and skin,” she says. “Everyone can use it as a moisturiser for the face and body and if you have really dry skin it can be used as a serum. It’s great as an intensive pre-shampoo treatment, nourishing really dry hair and flaky, dry scalps. Opt for a cosmetic-grade pure virgin argan oil, which although expensive, goes a really long way as you only need a small amount.” World-renowned make-up artist Ruby Hammer adds, “The nice thing about argan oil is that it naturally sinks right into the skin or you can take a spoonful of it pure and mix it into your yoghurt, salad or porridge. Argan oil rubbed into the skin or incorporated into your diet can really help relieve eczema and dermatitis.”

worse,” she says. “It also features vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant, which helps to reduce the inflammation caused by psoriasis.”

Aloe vera Charlotte Vohtz, founder of The Green People Company says, “Recent research shows that aloe vera juice contains high levels of polysaccharides that have protective properties on the skin’s surface. It also increases the hydration of the skin and encourages cell replication and regeneration.”

Jo Fairley, the co-founder of Green & Black’s chocolate, beautybible.com and co-author of The Anti-Ageing Beauty Bible, says her husband finds argan oil really effective for his own psoriasis. “Fatty acids and carotenoids in the oil work to balance the skin’s natural moisture levels, which is important because dry skin often makes psoriasis Jo also points out that it is particularly good for eczema, hives and anything where skin feels heated. “The toughlooking spikes slice surprisingly easily, revealing a soft, shiny, cooling, gel-like sap,” she says. “To harness its healing power, cut off two inches of leaf, slice in half and apply the cut side to the area that hurts; it seals the skin with a protective, healing covering as the gel dries. Alternatively, peel the aloe and crush it into the skin. Avoid the greenish/brown juice of the rind, though, because paradoxically this part can actually irritate.”

she says. “It can help to improve skin conditions from rashes, cuts and eczema to inflamed skin, scars and burns. Its extract helps to balance skin functions, making it great for acne or oily skin. It can soothe itchy, dry skin and relieve minor skin irritations, and it stimulates regeneration of new skin cells, improving its overall appearance.”

Sarah agrees, “If you’re looking for a natural, anti-ageing moisturiser, opt for one containing yarrow. Research suggests that yarrow may thicken the epidermis with regular use, making it an ideal ingredient to reduce the appearance of fine lines. Its antioxidant properties make it a potent protector against skin-cell damaging free radicals.”

Marigold

Yarrow

Usually referred to as calendula in the cosmetic world, marigold is one of nature’s most healing, skin-soothing elements, according to Jo. She uses it to treat her own eczema. “Calendula cream is so gentle it can be used for babies’ skincare. Marigolds are rich in betacarotene, antioxidants and salicylic acid. Hands, in particular, respond to their TLC. Very occasional adverse reactions have been reported though – so remember your patch test, as always.”

According to Ruby, yarrow has a reputation for speeding up the recovery of inflamed wounds and damaged skin. “Yarrow oil has a sweet, spicy smell,”

“Calendula has long been believed to have healing and protective properties across the world and in India it’s often used in ayurvedic medicine,” adds Ruby.

Film and Tapas Evening at FTK, Nerja U3A Groups The latest offering in this year’s “Film & Bowling Along Tapas Evenings” continues at FTK’s Nerja premises in Pasaje San Miguel (near the main Mercadona) on Friday 13th March at 7.30 pm with the box-office hit “Mom’s Night Out.” All are welcome.

Following on from a couple of quite intense films this month’s presentation is, quite unashamedly, a comedy. The storyline is very simple; young mom Allyson is dissatisfied with the daily routine and wants to inject some fun and excitement back into her life, so she teams up with her best friend from childhood days (Izzy) and the wife of her church’s pastor (Sondra) for a long-needed moms’ night out with the girls, away from the daily drudge. All Allyson and her friends want is a peaceful, grownup evening of dinner and fun, but in order to enjoy high heels, adult conversation, and food not served in a bag, they need to leave their children for a few hours with two dads and a single man who “hates” kids ... what could possibly go wrong? Mayhem ensues when they find Allyson has messed up their reservations for dinner and then they just happen to bump into Allyson’s sisterin-law’s ex-boyfriend who was supposed to be watching the baby. From then on it’s just 80 minutes of hilarity as they race around the city in search of baby Phoenix. Along the way, Allyson learns some very important lessons about life, motherhood and herself. Speaking personally, my daughter and I watched

this film and laughed until our sides ached; my wife, on the other hand commented that she could not sit through it as it was far too traumatic a reminder of the responsibilities of bringing up kids! Join us if you dare - one brave group of young moms has already decided to make it their next Mom’s Night Out! More information on 958 658439 or info@ftk-spain.net Leslie Thomas.

Following a good start to 2015, U3A Axarquia has continued to move forward. The long expected new exhibition by the Photography Group, opened on February 16th at the Las Perlas Gastrobar in Torre del Mar, and the same Group has announced a PopUp Studio Workshop Day in March. Elsewhere, the Art Appreciation Group has been looking at the work of the legendary Jack Vettriano, and the Spanish History Group had a trip to the Treasure caves at Rincon de la Victoria. However, all is not rosy with the Petanque Group in Torre del Mar, who have made a plea for new members, following a fall in numbers. The group meet every Monday at 3pm for about 90 minutes of playing, and are a very friendly crowd and welcome everybody, including those who are new to the game. If you would like to try the game out first, come along one Monday and see for yourself just along in a westerly direction from the blue and white lighthouse in Torre del Mar. Boules are available to try the game. The U3A website – www.u3aaxarquia. com - continues to be visited by an increasing number of people, and the future months are looking good.

Health news

Health Fact

If you say that you're dying to get a good night's sleep, you could mean that literally. You can go without eating for weeks without succumbing, but eleven days is tops for going without sleep.

E-cigarettes loaded with toxic chemicals, study finds "E-cigarettes" are just one of the nicknames for electronic nicotine delivery systems. At the moment there are no safety standards for these E-cigs and the high levels of toxins found in some of them range from formaldehyde to acetaldehyde, which are found in embalming fluids and industrial plants. Health experts in Japan are warning about these cancer-causing chemicals that are evident in the vapor produced by several types of e-cigarette liquids. We should not be quick to criticize e-cigarettes though, because across the globe, millions of people are thanking e-cigs for helping them get off commercial "cancer sticks." One brand of e-cigarette in the study was found to contain 10 times the level of carcinogens contained in one regular cigarette, according to the research team at the National Institute of Public Health in Japan. How could this be? When the wire that vaporizes the liquid gets too hot... that's how. Although nothing is "perfectly safe," compared with a cigarette, e-cigs are a hundred times safer. For people who switch to e-cigs, within a month or two their sense of smell and taste comes back. Plus, by cutting out thousands of chemicals, which are mainly the pesticides, the depression "factor" is cut way down, so is the anxiety and tension. The organs aren't working so hard to filter all those toxins, and the central nervous system isn't taxed so heavily. This means the heart isn't working as hard, although nicotine still causes veins to constrict, and this can be dangerous over time.

3 Proven Ways to Lose Belly Fat Everyone knows that being overweight can increase our risk of serious health problems. However, most people don't realize that not all fat distribution is equal. Accumulating fat under our arms and thighs, for instance, is more of a cosmetic concern than a cause for significant medical alarm. In reality, the most serious problems associated with being overweight, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes, are overwhelmingly caused by a build-up of abdominal fat. Abdominal fat is the fat that lodges itself against our major organs and compromises their ability to function properly - a state of affairs which, if left unchecked, can lead to an early death. Fortunately, the following lifestyle changes are known to help remove abdominal fat in a natural manner. Reduce carbohydrate intake Studies have shown that cutting carbs is an extremely effective way to lose abdominal fat. For example, a study published in the journal Nutrition & Metabolism discovered that there was a "clear benefit of a [very low carbohydrate ketogenic] over [low fat] diet for shortterm body weight and fat loss, especially in men." Significantly, the low carb diet demonstrated a "preferential loss of fat in the trunk region. Avoid refined sugar Countless studies link sugar consumption to overall weight gain. However, a study published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation has also shown that a consumption of sugar (specifically, fructosesweetened beverages) is responsible for increasing abdominal fat in overweight and obese adults, a result that shouldn't really be surprising, since our livers are forced to turn fructose into fat when it is flooded with refined sugar. Therefore, losing those last few pounds of belly fat might be as simple as avoiding high-sugar processed foods in favour of whole foods. Engage in more aerobic exercise While all exercise can potentially remove belly fat in the longterm, aerobic exercise (such as running and swimming) seems to be especially effective in this regard. Research published in the International Journal of Obesity, for instance, showed a clear link between aerobic exercise and visceral fat reduction.(5) A review featured in Obesity Reviews reached a similar conclusion, noting that "aerobic exercise is central for exercise programmes aimed at reducing [visceral adipose tissue]" 46 THE MARKET PLACE

Drinking coffee can naturally cut melanoma risk by 20%

The leading cause of skin-cancer death in the United States, melanoma, may be prevented by drinking coffee according to a study, which involved nearly 450,000 cancer-free patients, conducted by researchers from Yale University. Over the course of more than 10 years, their food intake, which included coffee consumption, was reviewed. So too was their incidence of melanoma. Nearly 3,000 participants had developed melanoma during this time frame. However, it was discovered that, overall, those who drank more coffee daily were less likely to develop the condition during follow-up periods. A 20% lowered melanoma risk, for example, was linked to those who consumed four cups of coffee daily. However, this isn't to say that people should engage in unhealthy skin behaviours so long as they have their favourite coffee by their side. The most important thing a person can do to reduce risk is to reduce sun and ultraviolet light exposure.

Apple cider vinegar - In the case of a sore throat, it's advised to mix two tablespoons of it with onequarter cup of warm water and two tablespoons of honey. 3. Garlic - After chopping, let the garlic sit for about 15 minutes. This helps ensure its effectiveness, as cooking lessens its healing properties. Many people enjoy mixing it with honey and lemon. 4. Zinc -Several studies have shown that zinc may reduce the duration of a cold and that it may even reduce the total number of colds a person gets annually. 5. Warm saltwater - Who can forget the common remedy of gargling with warm saltwater? Simply mix one-quarter teaspoon of salt with one-half cup of warm water, and gargle often. This restores proper pH levels and relaxes throat muscles.

News: Free medicine delivered to all homes...

Part 2 in a series by Knud Byrjalsen, Chiropractic Clinic, Nerja.

Dyspeptic pain is the most important signal for the human body. It means dehydration !

I

t is a thirst signal and it can occur in the young as it can in the older people. Of the dyspeptic pains, says Dr Batman, those of gastritis, duodenitis and heartburn should be treated with an increase in water intake alone. When there is associated ulceration, attention to the daily diet to improve the rate of repair of the ulcer becomes necessary. The common factor in these conditions is the dyspeptic pain. The local tissue change is the descriptive explanation for the changes brought about by the basic common factor, namely the initiating dehydration. Dr Batman can back up what he claims, with research and not only that but what is rare for a scientist is actually performing the treatment himself. He has treated 3,000 patients with dyspectic pain. They all responded to an increase in their water intake, and their clinical problems associated with the pain disappeared. The report of his way of treating dyspeptic pain with water was published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology in June 1983. (Funny, l don't seem to remember reading that one...!). At a certain threshold of dehydration, when the body urgently calls for water, nothing else can substitute . No medication is effective, only water. Batman claims that it takes about 8 minutes on average to achive total pain relief with his water treatment. Without going in to too much detail, here is how it works:

water and 2 % physical scaffolding that traps water. In this 'water layer' a natural buffer state is established. The cells below secrete sodium bicarbonate that is trapped in the water layer. As the acid from the stomach tries to go through this protective layer, the bicarbonate neutralizes it.

Drink a bit at a time, so you don't have to spend all day in the loo. Sorry, folks, but alcohol, coffee, tea, and caffeinecontaining drinks do not count as water.

The outcome of this action is greater production of salt (from the bicarbonate and the acid). Too much salt alters the waterholding properties of the scaffolding material of mucus. Too much acid neutralization and salt deposit in this mucus layer makes it less homogenous and sticky and allow the acid to get to the mucosal layer, causing pain.

News from local animal charities A.P.A.Ri.V. (Association for the Protection of Animals Rincon de la Victoria) One of the many very special dogs at APARIV BERNIE - taking one for the team! Bernie is one of our forever dogs at the refuge, but he doesn't have to be. When just a pup he suffered an injury in an accident that left him with a lame leg. That said, he gets along just fine on 3 legs while he carries his 4th up along his side with ease and some grace. He's an older dog with simple needs - a few cuddles, a head scratch now and again and a good meal daily. He gives back love and devotion. He also does get along well with older, nonboisterous dogs. He deserves to experience the benefits of a caring owner. Won't you consider meeting this exceptional guy? Interested call Lola 657-219-269 or visit out website aparivdogrescue.com

TAIL (Torrox Animal International League) As we leave winter behind, and it hasn’t been a bad one weatherwise has it, we are busy putting together our fundraising events for the spring and summer. The Quizzes and Race Nights continue for a while but then we have our 4th Spring Dog Show on 25th April, our third Fashion Show, a Beach Golf Pitch & Put competition (Ayuntamiento permitting) Dates and times to be advised for May. Both Tail shops on Torrox Costa, Avenida El Faro and Costa del Oro, continue to receive a constant supply of donated goods, mainly clothes, books and bric-a-brac and some larger items in the furniture line, which the volunteers work hard to sell thus providing the bulk of the income which keeps the Refuge afloat. Once again whenever we think we are making headway by reducing the numbers of dogs being cared for, by adoptions, boxes of puppies seem to appear from thin air! Not only do puppies bring dangers of infection (probably having come from abandoned mothers who are unlikely to have had the required vaccinations) but they are so much more costly for the charity to rear, and also take up the kennel space that should be going to adult dogs who have suffered more than enough. Help is always welcome in our Refuge or the shops, please contact:- Sue – 629 501 173 / Carly – Refuge 722 334 304 / Jean – Events 629 469 445

the law by continuing a local tradition involving animal cruelty. The Partido Animalista says Cazalilla Twon Hall has again held a fiesta during which a live turkey is released from the local church bell tower to be shot at by hunters. It claims residents club together to pay the 2,001E fine levied by the regional government. Vélez-Málaga is to have one of the province’s largest parks designed specifically for dogs and their owners. Environment councillor Antonio Martín announced in January that the 15,200 square metre area will open soon. Importantly for future canine visitors, preparations will include the planting of 150 trees. Local police in Málaga say that last year they reported 420 people in the city for failing to clear up after their dogs. Pet owners can face a fine of up to 500E for such inaction. Officers have intensified their efforts in this area making 2014 the year in which more prosecutions for this offence were initiated than ever before. The Spanish nurse who contracted and recovered from Ebola has adopted a new pet. Teresa Romero’s dog Exkálibur, was put down without her permission by Madrid authorities who feared it could carry the virus, a move which is now the subject of legal action. Teresa and her husband have now given a home to an American Stanford puppy, Alma, from a local animal protection centre.

Fake pet certificate warning Two people have been detained after a kennels rearing and selling puppies was closed by the Guardia Civil. The alert was raised in November by vets in Nerja who had discovered a number of dogs which were brought to them with accompanying paperwork which included apparently fake vaccination certificates. Officers from the force’s environmental arm, Seprona, examined the documents and found them to be very similar to the genuine certificates, leading to a suspicion that a professional printer could be involved. At the same time, various kennels in the area were inspected where more fake certificates were found. Finally, the investigation took them to a small kennels in Padul, between Motril and Granada, from where 162 puppies of various breeds were confiscated and taken into care. Most lacked any documentation relating to their identification, vaccination or other health treatments. The Guardia Civil confirmed that the kennels had been trafficking in animals and selling small dogs, such as Yorkshire terriers. A spokesman added that, during December, around 400 dogs under three months old were confiscated across Spain. The owner of the Granada kennels now faces charges of offences including forgery, lack of qualifications and fraud. The printer who copied genuine certificates and supplied them to the kennels is also facing a charge of forgery.

Málaga bans live circus animals

Town councillors in Málaga last month unanimously approved a new by-law which will outlaw the use of live animals in circus and other entertainment events in the city. They also agreed to launch a pilot programme to sterilise feral cats. The motion, which was tabled by the governing Partido Popular group at the town hall, points out that public awareness of animal abuse has increased significantly in recent times, leading to a growing demand for credible measures to ensure their protection. Animal News It underlines that the treatment of animals in circuses is often incompatible with the protection of their rights, and highlights The EC is reported to be considering whether to open an investigation into protecting the Iberian Lynx, given that so many the plight of ponies which are used in “live” roundabouts and which are forced to walk in circles for many hours at a time. die on Spain’s roads. Call for volunteers! The Costa Animal Society needs more volunteers to join its small band of dedicated helpers raising money to help animals in distress in this area. CAS is in particular need of those who could give time to run its charity shop in Nerja on weekdays, and to help out with its stall at the town’s market on Sunday mornings between about 8.00am and 2.00pm. If you have time and energy and could spare a few hours a week to help raise money for stray and abandoned animals, please call Diana Carter, CAS’s secretary, for a no-obligation chat. Diana would also like to hear from anyone who can donate goods which can be sold to raise cash for the charity’s work. CAS can collect items in the local area. was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

La Herradura

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
