New chapter for Muebles Piramides Puerto After almost 18 successful years, Danish owner of Muebles Piramides Puerto, Søren Liljegren, has decided it’s time for a change. But for aficionado’s of fine Danish furniture there’s no need to worry the iconic furniture store at Caleta Port has been passed on to safe hands... Søren opened the store back in 1999, aged 41. Now, with five children and three grandchildren all living back in his homeland of Denmark, Søren has decided it’s time to spend a bit more quality time with his family. As anyone who has founded and run their own business for such a long time will appreciate, Søren won’t be disappearing into the sunset just yet. His love for the business he refers to as his ‘child’ means he’ll still be involved in the background where needed, making visits to various suppliers old and new back in Denmark to ensure the company’s motto of ‘Danish Quality’ is maintained to the high standards expected by it’s customers. New owner Per Stridh, 41, has managed the store for the last four and a half years, so he’s already familiar with how the business functions. Per first came to Spain 16 years ago after meeting his Spanish wife in Germany. On completing Marketing studies at Lund University in his native Sweden, Per headed to Spain, where he’s been ever since. He lives locally with his wife and two children.

Per’s philosophy for the future of Muebles Piramides is simple - to continue providing the best service possible, and to continue supplying his customers with high quality furniture at competitive prices. He takes the reins of a well established business - a large percentage of Muebles Piramides’s client base are returning customers, many of whom have been coming to the store since it’s beginning. He also inherits a loyal, knowledgeable team of employees many staff members at Muebles Piramides have been part of the ‘family’ since it’s early days. Per looks forward to welcoming customers, both old and new, to his store. If you have any specific requirements or questions regarding furnishing your home or holiday rental apartment, Per and his team will be happy to help. Finally, Søren would like to say a big thank you to his former customers and staff for their many years of loyalty. He readily states that the best years of his working life have been at Muebles Piramides Puerto, and he is happy to see the business pass into the capable hands of his successor.

Where to find the best views in Florence By Jessica Infantino Trumble

Ahh, Florence…what’s not to love? A seemingly effortless fusion of unsurpassed art and architecture, delicious gastronomy and some of the most beautiful evening passeggiate you’ll find in Italy.

I

ts historic core is relatively compact in size yet bursts with so much Renaissance greatness, from Michelangelo’s David to Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Brunelleschi’s worldfamous Duomo atop the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Constructed from 1296 to 1436, the cathedral itself is the third largest in the world (after St. Peter’s in Rome and St. Paul’s in London) and is one of the most sought-after sights in Florence. Many visitors vie to climb the 463 steps to the top of the dome for an up-close look at its interior frescos and breathtaking 360-degree view of the city’s iconic red rooftops. I’ve done this twice and after the first time said that it’s quite possibly the best 8 euros you could spend. Note: You can no longer purchase individual tickets to climb the Duomo and reservations are now required for access. More information about the cumulative ticket that covers the dome, bell tower, baptistery, museum and crypt can be found at: https://www. museumflorence.com. Several years later when I returned to Florence I decided to visit the often overlooked and overshadowed (both literally and figuratively) Campanile. Designed by architect Giotto, the cathedral’s bell tower has a few less steps and far shorter lines than the Duomo but offers the same sweeping view of the city and pink, green and white Tuscan marble church below. Yet Campanile climbers are bestowed another reward for their effort – the cathedral’s magnificent dome dominating the view as they ascend to the top. It was the perfect sunny and mild day to take in a perfect view that I would not soon forget. In addition to the Cathedral and its bell tower, also consider a visit to the adjacent Baptistery on Piazza del Duomo, as well as the Opera Duomo Museum (where the baptistery’s original bronze doors are displayed) and Crypt of Santa Reparata – all of which are covered by the cumulative ticket.

Three other viewpoints in Florence that are worth the climb include:

Duomo The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore’s iconic red and white dome standing 376 feet above the city of Florence (versus the Campanile’s 278-foot height), which also includes the impressive frescoes of the Last Judgment inside the dome.

Tower of Arnolfo The Palazzo Vecchio’s clock tower named after its desiger Arnolfo di Cambio (who also designed Santa Maria del Fiore), which stands 308 feet tall above the Piazza della Signorina where you’ll also find a copy of Michelangelo’s David.

Piazzale Michelangelo The Oltrarno square with a stunning panoramic views of Florence in miniature (it reminds me of the opening scene from Mister Roger’s Neighborhood) from across the Arno River, along with another David statue for your viewing pleasure. Visit Italy this springtime: fly direct to Bologna from Malaga with RyanAir, at the time of writing a direct flight from 9th to 16th March 2017 was 115 euros per adult return. Bologna is a 1 hr 30 minute drive away from the beautiful city of Florence. If you have plenty of zest for more culture, Bologna also has plenty of churches, cathedrals, theatres and even it's very own leaning tower, so move over Pisa, say hello to Asinelli Tower. So if you are not fed up of stair climbing try this one at only 3 euros and with a mindblowing view of the ancient city's rooftops.

How to renovate a home for resale Reforming a home that you are going to enjoy for the next 20 years can be an exciting experience, but carrying out a reform to try to increase the value of the house in order to sell it is a different challenge. Firstly, you have to think carefully about the money you are spending on every aspect and really control the budget tightly. There can also be many unexpected twists and turns along the way that you might not have accounted for or that may go wrong, especially if the renovations are not just superficial. That is why before starting, it is important to really think about what work is needed and what is unnecessary so that you can hit that all important profit with the project. Do not spend more than you can recover Although this point seems very obvious, you would be surprised at how many people embark on projects with a very high budget for a house in which they are not going to live for more than a few months. If the renovation is worth 10,000 euros and you cannot add more than this amount to the price of the house, it is not worth doing. Many people are satisfied if after renovating a house for 12,000 euros they manage to get 12,000 euros more in the sale. However, they do not think about all the time they have had to lose, the worries and the effort. Many people underestimate how much time it takes to do a job as they are inexperienced in these things, often asking a professional tradesman can help in order to make your decision in the first place.

Prioritize the reform of the kitchen and bathroom if required. If the property needs a tremendous amount of work and your budget will not stretch to do everything, it is important that you prioritize the kitchen and bathroom first, as this is what buyers are looking for. It does not matter about the floor, the colour of the walls or decoration in other rooms. If the kitchen and bathroom are finished and look good potential buyers will be attracted as they can see that a big percentage of the jobs are done and the house is easier to live in.

Renew rather than change It is not necessary to spend a large sum of money on

changing floors, doors, architrives, tiles or skirting boards or tiles. Often a potential buyer will want to put their own stamp on the property too, so it is best to try and give the property a face lift by painting to make the property look clean, fresh, light and tidy.

Focus on the aesthetic issues It is better to invest 1,000 euros in painting rather than investing in a new heater/air conditioning unit. A new heater is not going to impress buyers, but the general look and feel of the place will make a big impression on whether they want to buy it or not. Anything that looks undesireable will make the buyer want to negotiate the price which will mean less profit for you.

Paint to change the appearance of the house There is nothing like painting a house to completely change the appearance of a home. Especially if the colours look good and you can inject a modern feel and touch to the place. If you choose pale colours like white, cream or pastel colours this will contribute to visually enlarge the appearance of the house and give rooms a greater luminosity. This can completely change the perception that a person has when they are viewing the property. As a vendor the goal is to make the buyer feel they can move straight into your home and live their life.

Keep things in proportion A four-bedroom house with three bathrooms is an attractive proposition. A seven-bedroom house with one shower room is a nightmare. More bedrooms do not necessarily mean added value. In fact, if you have to sacrifice comfort, an increased number of bedrooms can result in a reduced asking price. People would far rather buy a three-bedroom house with two bathrooms, than a four-bedroom house with one.

Make an entrance The hall is the first thing the buyer sees, yet it’s often narrow, cramped and full of prams, bikes and trainers. A 10 euro mirror on either side of the wall makes it seem magically bigger. And the same applies, of course, throughout the house. Find a bottleneck, and make it disappear with the help of reflective surfaces. It’s a lot cheaper than actually enlarging your property.

world book day 3rd march The main idea is to encourage children to start enjoying reading at an early age, so that they carry on this enjoyment into adulthood. What’s so great about reading anyway? For a start, reading and writing are at the heart of learning and communication – essential for raising smart kids! There can be a more serious side because we read newspapers to find out about important world affairs.

The jukebox bandits On St Patricks night 17th March at Restaurante Pampano, Competa and 1st April at Chiringuito Trophy, Caleta The Jukebox Bandits are: Rod Jones on keyboards, Ian Hayton on acoustic guitar, bass and vocals, Marshall Dixon on drums and percussion and Mitch France on guitars, banjo, mandolin and vocals. They play an eclectic mix of pop, rock and folk standards from Britain, America, Ireland and Spain. From Dire Straits to The Dubliners, from Manu Chao to Jason Mraz. The music starts mellow (whilst people are eating), gradually picking up the tempo and culminating with the dance set including standards like Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl”, REM’s “Losing My Religion” and The Mavericks’ “Dance the Night Away”.

world water day 22nd march

world consumer rights day 15th march

World Water Day is observed each year on 22 March. The day, which was established by the United Nations was first celebrated in 1993 to celebrate the importance of freshwater around the globe. Did you know that over 45% of the world’s land surface is covered by river basins. From water and our future to sanitation and water scarcity, the day aims to keep us informed, and in a whole host of different ways!

World Consumer Rights Day will be held on 15 March around the globe to recognise our rights as consumers when it comes to financial services. The World Consumer Rights Day was first observed in 1983, demanding that consumer rights were respected and protected. The aim of the day is to celebrate solidarity within the international consumer rights movement.

exhibition of 38 picassos Until the 26th March at the Picasso Museum in Malaga city. The exhibition “38 Picassos” presents a selection of works by the Malaga-born artist Pablo Picasso. These works have been part of the permanent collection for six years and will now be shown in their own exhibition for the first time. This collection of works almost entirely spans the artist's career and were created between 1903 and 1972. A collection that shows the evolution of the artist and the thematic diversity of his career. All works have been lent courtesy of the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso (Almine and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso Foundation).

The two electricity markets - Free & Regulated explained Press the switch and the light goes on 'as if by magic'... but this all depends on power plants which generate energy and the utility companies which sell the energy and send the bills to the end consumer. In fact, your bill will tell you the answer to that very important question: are you on the 'free' or 'regulated' market?

T

his difference is important because it affects what you are going to pay for the electricity you use.

Half of Spanish households (13 million) are on the free market and the other half are on the regulated market. But the free market is on the up, in fact in recent months it has overtaken the regulated market.

What market are you on? If you don't know, it is easy to find out. Just look at the top of your bill:

portant year; since then, consumers have been able to choose which company they are going to pay their bill to. The market liberalisation process is not yet complete, however, and the regulated market still exists. The two markets share two of the three basic parts of each electricity bill: Access fees - these are set by the government and are used to pay the costs of maintaining the electricity grid and transporting the electricity to your home. Taxes - What is different in the bill is the price charged for producing electricity. THE REGULATED MARKET This called the PVPC tariff (Voluntary Small Consumer Price). This price changes hourly and daily depending on the balance of supply-demand between whoever is producing energy (the generation company) and whoever is selling this energy to consumers (the company selling the electricity). If you have a smart meter, then this complex prices curve is applied to your bill. This means that your bill will go up if you consume more electricity at expensive times of the day and will go down if you consume more at the cheaper times. All consumers can ask to pay the PVPC rate as long as they have a contract power of lower than 10 kW. And they can only do so with certain authorised companies which sell electricity (there are only 7, and one of them is Endesa EnergĂa).

If it says Endesa EnergĂa S.A. Unipersonal (above) then you are on the free market. If it says Endesa Energia EEXXI SLU (below) then you are on the regulated market.

On the regulated market, the kWh price changes from one day to another. THE FREE MARKET There are almost 100 retailers in the free market zone. The price is set by the company, which announces it and puts it in the contract - just as with other services such as telephone, etc. For example, with your telephone, you know how much you are going to pay for each minute - and with your electricity, you can have the same peace of mind, as you know how much each kWh you consume will cost you. Come rain or shine, no matter if is windy, cold or hot, this is the price you are going to pay - unlike the regulated market. On the free market, the price per kWh is what it says in your contract. Everyone can agree to pay their electricity on the free market in fact, most Spanish households prefer to do it this way.

But Why Are There Two Different Markets? In the past, the entire electricity market was regulated and prices were set by the government. The market began to be deregulated in 1997. During this process, 2009 was a very im 18 THE MARKET PLACE

CAN YOU CHANGE FROM ONE MARKET TO ANOTHER? Of course. Liberalisation means just that - being able to choose. Anyone who wants to change from the PVPC rate is welcome to use the free market. Consumers who are on the free market can change to the regulated market, as long as their contract power is not above 10 kW. All consumers are entitled to change to the free market whenever they wish.

Car News by Martin Ward

BMW Isetta This is not the first time I have driven an Isetta, as I drove one many years ago - too many years to actually remember, it was when I was about 18 years old.

T

he Isetta started life in 1953 being designed and built by the Italian company Iso Autoveicoli and called the Iso Isetta. The company also made refrigerators, motor scooters and three-wheeled trucks. The Isetta was introduced to the world in Turin and was unlike anything seen before as it was so small, 2.29 metres or 7.5 feet long and 4.5 feet wide. It was egg shaped with bubble-like windows, hence it was called the ‘Bubble-Car’. Licences were granted to other companies around the world to produce versions of the Isetta, including: Velam in France, Romi-Isetta in Brazil, BMW Isetta in Germany and BMW Isetta United Kingdom, which were right-hand drive. BMW made the Isetta its own, they redesigned the power-plant around a BMW 1-cylinder, four-stroke, 247cc motor-cycle engine which produced a whopping 13hp. BMW changed just about every part of the Isetta, so many in fact that hardly any parts were interchangeable with the Italian car. The 300 was launched in 1956 and production finished in 1962. BMW produced over 161,000 of these tiny cars. The British version was assembled in the former Brighton railway works under licence from BMW. This factory was not connected to any roads, so all parts being delivered went in by rail and the finished car left the same way.

20 THE MARKET PLACE

The right hand drive models gave the company some problems, as the engine and driver were on the same side, so a 27kg/60 lb counterweight was added to the left hand side to compensate. The four-wheel Isetta was not popular in the UK until a three-wheel version was introduced, as this car could be driven with a motor-cycle, and there was also a financial advantage - but they were prone to ‘rolling-over’ so extra care had to be taken. It was time to get behind the wheel and to get into the Isetta - you open the door outward on its hinges. The steering wheel column and small instrument panel moves forward with the door and you climb into it backwards. You could go in forward I suppose and shuffle your body around when in, although just getting in and out takes a bit of thinking about. The seat is a bench that comfortably accommodates two adults and with a squeeze could fit three people. The engine starts with the key, and it fires into action fairly slowly, taking a while to get into full swing. The onecylinder engine is not the liveliest engine in the world. If you are wondering what the 0-62mph is, well it doesn’t have one as it won’t get up to 62mph, even going downhill with a strong following wind. The gear-shift on this left-hand drive version is on your left side, right up against the plywood panel. The gears are all the wrong way round and take some getting used to. If there was a reverse gear, I didn’t find it whilst driving around Cannes. With the gear shift being so close to the panel you have to be careful not to scrape your knuckles against it. Back in its day, they say you could always spot an Isetta driver by having scabs and blood on their knuckles. At one point the National Health Service started providing the Isetta free of charge for wheelchair users so they

could drive while in their wheelchairs. This was noble in intent, but the project was deemed unsuccessful and was stopped almost as quickly as it started. Considering that Cannes is on the coast there are quite a few hills and some are steep. You don’t realise how steep they are until you drive a one-cylinder car up them with two people in it. You need to get up as much speed as possible and keep your foot planted to the floor and hope it gets up the hill. If you have to stop, then setting off again on a steep incline can be, well… a bit buttock clenching. I drove on the Promenade in Cannes, where it is flat and the car drove so well. We stopped to take photographs but found this simple task very difficult as so many passers-by, including other car drivers in far more expensive cars such as Ferraris, Astons, Lamborghinis and Bentleys were stopping and getting in the way. This small, slow and relatively cheap car in the South of France was certainly attracting more attention than the expensive fast cars on the coast; it certainly was a headturner. All Isettas have a small canvas sunroof for two reasons – to save on steel, but more importantly an escape route in case of an accident, clever eh…. After the drive it was time to get out and this is probably more difficult than getting in. You have to stand up, then crouch down and carefully ease yourself out of the door. The door is not counterbalanced, so it has a tendency of trying to close while you are trying to get out, so you need to hold it open with one hand, and hold on to the frame with the other to steady yourself. The cost, new, back in the late 1950’s was in the low hundreds of pounds, but the value of this classic car continues to rise and buying a nice one for less than £10,000 is almost impossible now.

THE MARKET PLACE 23

Are you searching for a new car? Marketplace: Today we want you to introduce to Jürgen Haas and his new company www.autoagent.es. Hi Jürgen, how are you? Tell us something about your service. Jürgen: I’m importing premium 2nd hand cars from Germany on demand. My focus is on cars of German and British makes, between 1-5 years old and with up to 100.000km. The unique thing about my service is, that I offer the complete service from start to finish! Finding the car you want, completing the purchase and managing the import procedures. That means, the customer is only involved twice in the process: in the beginning, when he’s choosing the car and at the end, when he picks it up here in Frigiliana with the Spanish papers and number plates. For further peace of mind, I only promote pre-checked cars from dealers I know. (see the examples below). Marketplace: That sounds good. How do you make sure that you only sell good cars? Jürgen: First of all, I only buy from serious dealers in Germany and, secondly, before the purchase, the car is checked by an independent engineer using an 80 point checklist and also looking at model specific issues. Thereby, I can make sure that the car is in perfect condition. That’s in my interest as well, because I give at least a 1 year warranty on every car. Furthermore, in the whole ‘supply chain’ I only work with professionals: the car dealers, the engineers, the transport company and the gestoria. Marketplace: How long does the whole process take and what extra does it cost? Jürgen: The whole process takes between 2-4 weeks. It depends on the ITV and the DGT, how fast we can get an appointment and how fast they work. This doesn’t cost anything extra. The customer receives the final price before buying, including any costs or taxes and even one year road tax. That means full transparency for the customer – he can check the Spanish market to see if there is a better offer, but I doubt there is, with the high level of convenience and security that I offer!

Marketplace: Why should people buy a nearly new second hand car from Germany? Jürgen: There are several reasons: Firstly, the nearly new 2nd hand car market is much bigger than here in Spain – this gives you the opportunity to choose nearly any colour or specification. Secondly, the cars are, like in the UK, much better looked after. All my cars have a gapless service history and are non-smokers cars and the mileage is guaranteed. Thirdly, the cars are in much better condition, e.g. the paint or the headlights because of less sun, or the whole chassis, because of the better roads – I’m sure, 99% of the SUVs in Germany have never seen a campo track! Marketplace: What about the payment? Jürgen: The payment has to be made in advance to my bank account, after signing the buying and service contract. If you are paying from, for example, the UK, you can use our partner Currencies Direct and pay through them into my bank account. I don’t take cash. I keep the customer up to date about the status by email and they can call me any time. Whoever wants may have a copy of my passport as well. I have nothing to hide and I don’t want to rip anybody off. To those who only trust big companies: remember what happened in 2008! Marketplace: What should people do when they are interested in purchasing a car from you? Jürgen: Just go to the contact section on my website, www.autoagent.es, and send me an email with your idea of the car and specifications you are thinking about. I’ll call you back within 24 hours. Marketplace: What additional services do you offer? Jürgen: I can also offer a car insurance, for which I have negotiated a 20% discount for my customers. Marketplace: Thank you Jürgen. It certainly sounds as if you will make, what is an important decision for many people, a much simpler and less mystifying process.

THE MARKET PLACE 25

Frigiliana based artist Jonathan Addis has just created beautiful maps of both Nerja and Granada. Market Place talked to Jonathan to find out more... What is your background as an artist? I was born in Cornwall in 1959 to British parents who then settled near Dublin where i grew up. I have lived from my art all my life in France, Spain, Ireland and more recently in London where I have found recognition and success with the originals of my maps fetching some high prices. I made my first ever map of Granada in 2007 which i funded by getting businesses to contribute in return for a listing on the map. I then got backing from a banker friend in London to develop the idea. What inspires you to create your unique maps? In a globalised society where everywhere seems increasingly the same we need character and difference in order to find value and meaning. Our identity is tied up with our environment and perhaps in making my maps I’m reinforcing connections. It would be nice if all the english people in Spain spoke Spanish (and even went a step further and spoke to each other!) since it would make us all feel better about ourselves. I think the idea of sun and sangria producing instant happiness is a myth. We need to be taking an active interest in the world around us in this case, Spain of course. 26 THE MARKET PLACE

How do you create the maps, and what materials/techniques do you use? There is no simple answer as to how I create the maps. I need to know the place well and i make sketches again and again - quite obsessively - until i arrive at an image I’m happy with (which i might then decide isn’t good enough and i start all over again!). The originals are very large and made with a dip pen, indian ink and watercolour.

Can people buy prints of your work? Yes, prints can be purchased online at www.jonathanaddis.com. I have the originals scanned and then i offer prints to purchase in reduced sizes. I find it is best to print to order using light fast, UV resistant inks. This process is more costly but especially in a warm climate i think it's worth it, as conventional prints will fade quickly if exposed to UV light of which there's plenty here in Southern Spain.

Manish's Zodiac predictions - March Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

You will be able to focus on pleasure, recreation, leisure pursuits and creative activities. Make sure that you take command of the ship and really put into practice the things you have learned to do and the wisdom you have learned about yourself. Money pressures or financial matters may have a determining influence on what happens in your love life and a little solitude will go a long way.

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

You might be dealing with financial possibilities where a hard-edged realism rather than naïve enthusiasm needs to be your guiding light. Work and health matters may be under stress and the developments here may be affected by changes with regard to travel plans and communication problems. Travel may be fortunate for romance although there will be hectic or emotional circumstances that will come with such encounters.

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)

As far as matters of work are concerned, communication and information are important areas of focus and you will need to develop skills to expand your operations here. Be open to new ideas and develop new lines of thought. Strong demands or responsibilities to be met will limit the time and energy you can give to relationships. There could also be dealings with people of stature in the community life around you.

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

This can be a period of expansion and expansive activities but make sure you don’t expend energy, money and resources in wasteful or extravagant endeavours. Make your plans and lay your foundations, then step ahead fearlessly to get what you want. This month, you will need to be careful in health management matters with regard to any long term conditions or problems you might be dealing with.

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

This will be a month in which it is important to work at relationships, rather than riding high on their natural joys. Your attention may be drawn to past patterns and hurts in your own life that throw some light on what is happening in your current relationship cycle. Try not to mix matters of money and love too heavily or you could find yourself in a sticky position.

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

This month brings a change with regard to your own hopes and wishes and people with whom you have had associations in the past. Sudden or unexpected developments could take a strong hand in where things go from here. Joint financial arrangements may be a trigger for change. Your goals or hopes for the future will be radically changed because of powerful or transforming events. 28 THE MARKET PLACE

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

This is a time of self-proof that can bring solid advancement, as long as you’re prepared to put in the effort and curb that natural impatience. There will be hardship, ill health and unwanted solitude for some. But, in the long term, if you put what you have learned to work, you can build a new place for yourself in the society of which you are a part.

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

Matters of travel, communication, education, and developing new and more creative ideas all become important in the process of growth and advancement. There is potential for undue extravagance, but you could do well from affairs connected with other people’s money, investment analysis and research, inheritances, insurance, legacies and the like. The committed ones may need to find and explore a new level of independence in their primary relationship.

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

You will need to make sure your goals or objectives are realistic and that don’t waste money on things that are extravagant or beyond the scope of your ability to achieve. Your focus for the month will be on your lifestyle, what you really want to do and how you want to do it. Your children and their lives may be very important for some of you.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

This month will stir up many emotions, changing your living and domestic arrangements, your family life and perhaps even causing you to deeply examine your personal history. All partnership relations will receive some obstruction this month, but have the potential for profound transformation, especially in areas related to finances. If you have children there could be some discord with them.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

You will be called on a journey of new knowledge, new directions and new ideas and feelings. You will be able to reflect proudly on the reward for your effort. There will be some changes in your financial situation and also with regard to your relations with people in positions of authority and in the wider community. You could be looking at the beginnings of a new found independence.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

This is the month for a new business venture or some kind of risk or gamble with career matters and where your life is going. Good friends will have an important part to play in your financial dealings this month. Try to maintain a balance between following your own desires and listening to friends you trust or whose position indicates a higher level of knowledge.

Health, Body & Soul Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle

Does the sound of people munching drive you crazy? slurp up their

Is microwaving food bad? Health freaks tell us using a microwave is bad for our health, it apparently removes the vitamins and nutrients from our food. However, this notion that mircrowaves are worse for us than other forms of cooking is not supported by any evidence. When food is heated some vitamins can be broken down but this will happen just because it is heated - it does not matter which method of cooking you use. Some nutrients can also be lost in cooking water, so more goodness is lost in boiling rather than steaming, frying or microwaving. So if you like microwaving your food - carry on !

Can't stand the sound of loud chewing? There's a scientific reason for that.

first spoonful of soup! (Please, restrain yourself.)

There’s nothing worse than sitting in a cafeteria (or at your desk) listening to someone slurping their soup or chewing gum, right?

Science, however, has had a hard time quantifying and studying this intense - and specific! - brand of rage, until now.

If you're nodding your head (or recoiling) you might suffer from misophonia, which literally translates to hatred of sound. This is because, for some people, sounds like chewing loudly trigger negative emotions, thoughts and reactions. You might find yourself desperately wanting to slap someone in the face as soon as they

Published in Current Biology, brain imaging (MRI) was used on a group of people with misophonia and a group without it. They were played three different types of sounds. Neutral sounds like rain or a kettle boiling, unpleasant sounds like a baby crying or person screaming, and trigger sounds of breathing and eating. When played the ‘trigger’ sound, the group with no abnormality showed increased activity in the anterior insular cortex (AIC) but not in the frontal lobe area. Those with misophonia showed brain activity in both areas – suggesting an 'abnormality of brain control.' The ground-breaking research means that misophonia may in the near future be seen as a proper ‘disorder’ in the medical community. And who knows - maybe people will learn how to chew with their mouths closed, silently. Fingers crossed!

Is Manuka honey worth the money?

Breast Cancer - simple trick to finding a lump

Manuka Honey originates in New Zealand and is made by bees that forage for nectar from the wild manuka tree. In a 1991 study from the Honey Research Unit in New Zealand they showed that Manuka Honey was the only substance that kept its ability to kill bacteria when you remove the hydrogen peroxide because it contains the ingredient methylglyoxal which has antimicrobial properties. But there are now different grades of Manuka honey and the whole system has become very confusing as to what level of methylglyoxal it contains. You may not be sure that you are getting value for money when you buy manuka honey. There has been some research in Cardiff that has shown honey and in particular manuka honey to be effective to treat wounds and MRSA. However this type of honey would need to be medical grade honey and it's not something you could get at home. Most people buy it thinking it will help with a sore throat, gut problems or even allergies. But there is not enough scientific evidence yet to back this theory up. So as for eating shop-bought manuka honey there is no robust evidence to say it will be any more effective at this than a cheaper alternative. People swear by it still though and feel it works for them.

A UK woman's facebook post has gone viral after she shared a simple trick for spotting a lump in her breast. Women are told to check their breasts in the shower whilst standing up but this woman could only feel the lump while lying in bed and when stood up the lump completely disappeared. Hayley Browning confirmed that, “Most websites tell you to check for lumps in the shower but if I had followed this advice, the lump may have grown too large to be treatable. Not even Ginseng is an ancient the surgeon could feel herbal remedy containing my lump when I was standing up.” ginsenosides, which improve Ms Browning started the memory and mood, fight hashtag #LaidBackLumps and encouraged women diabetes, cancer, ADHD, and to try her simple technique when checking reduce the relative risk their own breasts for lumps and bumps. of respiratory illnesses

Wednesday March 15th 2017 at 11am Being held in the Casa Cultura, Calle Granada, Nerja NAME DROPPING: ARTISTS I HAVE KNOWN FROM DALÍ TO HOCKNEY Fully Illustrated Lecture by Peter Webb Morning lecture, sponsored by Currencies Direct Visitors E10 Other NADFAS Society Members E5

“In 1962, I met Van Gogh’s nephew who showed me the family collection of his uncle’s work long before it was presented to the Dutch State for the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. This led me to drive through Holland and France in search of the landscapes the artist painted. In this lecture I will show my photographs next to his images in order to demonstrate the power of his visions, which led him to write: “The emotions that grip me in front of nature can cause me to lose consciousness”. “

“As a writer and lecturer on 20th century art, I have always found that people love to hear personal stories about the subject under discussion. I have found, during the course of research on the various topics which I have tackled, that personal contact with relevant people greatly enriches the end result. One of the people I will be discussing is David Hockney who was in the news in 2012 when he was the subject of a major exhibition at the Royal Academy. I have known him since 1970 and often watched him at work. He created an original engraving for the Collector’s Edition of my book “The Erotic Arts” first published in 1975, at which time he drew my portrait. I published the first biography, “Portrait of David Hockney”, in 1988. He is now considered by many to be England’s favourite artist.

About Peter Webb (From Peter’s website): “Peter Webb has degrees from Cambridge and London Universities and a Doctorate from the University of East Anglia. After a lectureship at Coventry College of Art, he started teaching the first degree course in England on the subject of The Erotic Arts at Hornsey College of Art in London in 1970 and lectured extensively on related topics at universities and colleges throughout the seventies and eighties. He published his influential book on the same subject in 1975, later reprinted and updated. Subsequently he has written books on Hans Bellmer (2006), David Hockney (1991) and Leonor Fini (200). After Hornsey, he taught at Middlesex University in London, and he retired as Reader in the History of 20th Century Art in 1996. Peter Webb has also written many articles for art journals as well as exhibition catalogues, and has made over 60 radio and television appearances. He has lectured at over 100 universities, colleges, museums and galleries around the world, including Tate Britain, Tate Modern, National Portrait Gallery, Whitechapel Art Gallery, Dulwich Art Gallery, Norwich Museum, London Institute of Contemporary Art, Manchester Art Gallery, Leamington Art Gallery, Centre Pompidou, Musee National d’Art Moderne, Paris, Trieste Museum of Fine Art, Montreal Museum of Fine Art, and the universities of Cambridge, Oxford, London, Sussex, East Anglia, Texas, Seattle, Montreal, Toronto, Hong Kong etc.” Peter talked to us about David Hockney in March 2013.

My PhD thesis was on the German artist Hans Bellmer whom I interviewed shortly before his death. I published my book “Hans Bellmer” in 1985 which established his importance in the Surrealist movement. During the eighties and nineties I became friendly with the Italian artist Leonor Fini in Paris. Though elderly, she still led an extraordinary life, just as she had done in the thirties and forties when she had fascinated the Surrealists with her beauty and her art. In 2009 I published “Metamorphosis of the Sphinx, the Life and Art of Leonor Fini”. Other artists I have encountered include Salvador Dali, with whom I spent an extraordinary day in his home in Spain in 1966; Henry Moore, whose tea parties I use to attend in the seventies at Much Hadham; the Surrealist Joan Miro; Francis Bacon; Allen Jones; Ron Kitaj; Peter Blake; Howard Hodgkin; Gilbert and George; Anish Kapoor; the photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Mapplethorpe, and the film director Derek Jarman. I have also known the pop musicians John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Cliff Richard, Ray Davies and Adam Ant.”

Can garlic function as a nutrition supplement?

With approximately 16 million UK adults having high blood pressure, hypertension is one of the UKs' more ubiquitous diseases. Medical nutrition therapy - centered on the DASH diet, weight management and increased physical activity - has proven to be effective in hypertension management, while physicians often will prescribe medications, as well.

R

ecent interest in supplements, their effectiveness and potential drug interactions may prompt enquiries from patients diagnosed with hypertension. Although foods and compounds hailing from the traditions of folk medicine are the subject of safety and efficacy studies in the treatment of high blood pressure, one trendy supplement is everyone's favourite little aromatic: garlic. With a long, varied history of medicinal use, garlic supplementation for decreasing diastolic and systolic blood pressure is rated as possibly effective on the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database. Similar to some pharmaceuticals, garlic appears to help in vasodilation, or widening of blood vessels due to relaxation of the muscular walls of the vessels. It also may inhibit angiotensin II, a naturally occurring substance in the body that narrows blood vessels and increases blood pressure. To be clear, the evidence is not strong enough to suggest that garlic preparations may be used as an alternative to prescription medication, and garlic supplementation should not replace dietary, lifestyle or medical interventions for hypertension. A 2007 literature review found the evidence supporting garlic's positive effect on blood pressure to be "limited." However, more recent research suggests garlic may have a modest effect on lowering systolic and diastolic blood pressure in individuals with hypertension. So what is it about garlic? The answer may be the antioxidant allicin, a sulfur compound that not only is responsible for the garlicky aroma, but also has been identified as the potential beneficial constituant to health. Allicin is formed when fresh garlic is crushed and begins degrading almost immediately. For this reason, along with factoring the amount of fresh

garlic consumption required to reap the potential benefits related to hypertension, garlic supplements have become popular. Available through natural foodshops, online and in vitamin stores, garlic supplements range in format (typically tablets or capsules) and formulations, including dried garlic powder, powder extracts and macerated oils - each with different claims of benefits and bioavailability. Garlic has been used safely in human clinical studies lasting up to seven years without reports of significant adverse effects, and doses higher than would be administered to humans have been tested without toxicity in animals. Although many studies did not report adverse events, when side effects were noted, they included malodorous breath or body odor, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, flatulence or diarrhea and allergic reactions for those with a garlic allergy. There also are some drug-nutrient interactions of moderate and major effects to discuss with patients interested in garlic supplementation, including blood thinning and blood pressure medications, contraceptive drugs, tuberculosis medications and several HIV/AIDS medications. Due to the wide range of product types - and because dietary supplements do not require approval - consumers should look for independent quality assessment seals and third-party verification about a product's ingredients and quantities. Fellowship of The King Film & Tapas Evening The unforgettable and much-applauded film, “Romero”, is next up in this season’s popular Film & Tapas evenings at FTK in Nerja; it will be screened at 7.30pm on Friday 3rd March at FTK’s premises in Pasaje San Miguel (around the corner from the main Mercadona.) This excellent movie, filmed in Mexico with a strong cast, tells the true story of Oscar Romero, who lived in El Salvador during the political unrest of the 1970s/80s. During the 1977 El Salvadoran presidential election, a fraudulent election, public unrest was at an all-time high. In the midst of a guerrilla uprising, the military regime sent death squads to detain, torture and kill anyone who spoke out against its disgraceful human rights record. The military also prevented everyday people from getting to the polling stations; soldiers violently prevented buses and other private means of transport from bringing men and women to town on election day. On the other side of the world, the Vatican elevated conservative Oscar Romero (played by Raul Julia) to the position of Archbishop of the country of El Salvador, hoping that with his quiet, rather timid and very reserved personality, he would not get involved in the political dispute. Initially, he refrained from stirring up any anti-government sentiment, but progressively, as he spent more and more time in his post, he began to see evidence of deception, oppression and systemic murder. Thereafter he knew he could not support the government in good conscience and spoke out against

their tyranny. This was seen as disloyalty and the government went from relying on priests to killing them when they spoke out; they initiated a slogan “Be a Patriot- Kill a Priest” thus the number of priests attacked went up and churches were closed down. Although Romero was assassinated in March 1980, his stand for truth and justice continued to have a powerful impact on El Salvador. A film that still has echoes around the world today comes highly recommended - do join us! More information on 952 969 058 or email fotk.spain@gmail.com

Local animal charities A massive thanks to everyone on Punta Lara and Daniella on Tamango Hill who contributed to the neutering of these 2 lovelies, one male (on the right) and one female – giving time, energy, transport and money. They were abandoned last June as tiny puppies by the Rio Seco and have been living in the campo between the Rio and behind Urb. Casablanca ever since. Despite being on their own to fend for themselves, they are extremely obedient and loving, although shy as expected. They are being fed, however if anyone finds a spot in their hearts to consider offering a forever home please do go to see them. They do answer to the names Gangi (male) and Fiona (female). However without the support of both APANerja and Tail animal charities as well as San Fernando Clinic this would have been impossible.

Several species of toads in Andalucia are poisonous and can be fatal to your pets if they bite or lick these amphibians. The symptoms of poisoning are drooling or foaming from the mouth, head shaking, vomiting, sneezing, difficulty breathing and convulsions. If you think your pet has been poisoned flush its mouth out with copious amounts of water and contact your vet immediately. Unfortunately, the Pine Processionary caterpillars are still on the march so the above applies to these pests as well. Additionally, as the weather gets warmer there will be an increase in mosquitoes, sand flies, fleas and ticks. You can prevent your pets’ exposure with spot-on treatments and repellent collars. C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) Toad Warning and Other Pests With the arrival of spring the Costa Animal Society (CAS) would like to remind you that this is the mating season for frogs and toads and if you live near a water source you can probably hear them in the evening. These creatures breed in water so they are attracted to ponds, stagnant pools, creeks and river beds. Toads live on land and tend come out at night under damp conditions such as heavy dew or rain. They may even venture into your garden when it has just been watered. If you find a toad in your garden, first secure your dog to a safe place. Then prepare yourself with rubber gloves and some tools such as a bucket or shovel. Next remove the toad safely yet humanely back to its natural habitat like a field or river. 48 THE MARKET PLACE

English lady who lived in Manilva. All went well until her house burnt Bruno down. Luckily the dogs survived. Unfortunately this lady went back to the UK and said she would send for the dogs. We kept on trying to contact her but we had no success. Sadly this occurs too often. The dogs have been in the refuge for about 18 months now and are about our biggest dogs but also our most obedient. Last week we got the fantastic news that Leila was being adopted in Germany. We were delighted as its always harder to re home big dogs. The only downside is that Bruno is going to be devastated without his sister. We are really trying to find him a home as he should not be in the refuge. He is a big boy and needs exercise. He gets walked nearly every day by our team of volunteers but a loving home is what he needs. He is about 2 years old, lab cross and castrated. If you can help please contact Tail Torrox on Facebook or call Gill 633 405 560.

The Nao Victoria arrives in Malaga The arrival of a replica of the carrack the Nao Victoria (which was the first ship to circumnavigate the globe from 1519 to 1522) into Malaga for one week only brought us to the city one Saturday afternoon in February. We spent a full day in the capital city, enjoying an inspiring visit. by Zoe McCardle

M

y son and I and a good friend with her children parked the car in Malaga and took a stroll through the park to the port area where the ship was docked. The transformation in the city of Malaga over the last decade has been incredible and the port area is a place where there is something for everyone and a really cool place to take the kids. Our bunch were unleashed from the restraints of their pushchairs and were raring to go! We first encountered the park, which of course the children were delighted with, featuring lots of wooden playground equipment, ropes and even sensory toys. It was a struggle to move them on but the hint of viewing a real 'pirate ship' soon captured their imaginations. We wandered along the dockside and absorbed the sights and sounds; people sat relaxing for a bite to eat on the

terraces of restaurants, boats bobbing around in the harbour, children shrieking with delight holding onto balloons and the hustle and bustle of people chatting as they meandered along. We reached the carrack the Nao Victoria, which looked impressive - the children all agreed it was just like a real pirate ship from Peter Pan. Ahoy there me hearties! The replica of the ship was built in Spain in 1991. In order to do this a long historical research was carried out by Ignacio Fernandez Vial to copy the exact design, shape, characteristics and dimensions of the original ship. In order to commemorate the first sailing around the world by Juan Sebastian Elcano 15191522, the replica of the Nao Victoria also started a journey around the globe in 2004 from Seville. Up to 26,894 nautical miles were covered during 2004-2006, visiting 17 countries. This replica was the first one to circumnavigate the earth. We quickly bought tickets and climbed aboard to explore the boat, trying to imagine what it would have been like 500 years ago setting off on a journey into the unknown! The original ship was part of a fleet of five ships and 265 men; only 18 of these men returned alive, most dying of malnutrition. As we stepped down the big wooden stairs to the main deck of the ship I was surprised at how small it was, this ship would have had 45 men aboard and according to information they mostly slept on mats on the main deck. Meals were also prepared on the main deck by lighting fires. Their diet consisted of cake, lentils, salted meat and fish, dried fruits, vinegar and wine. The enormity of what the sailors went through was slowly sinking in, it was no wonder many did not survive. We looked at the captains cabin which looked a little more spacious and comfortable then the shipmates area. My son was facinated with the navigational compass but the original ship used an Astrolabe, Jacobs staff and Quadrant to measure the height of the sun over the horizon and then calculate the ships position on navigational charts - no mean feat! Those that did survive were able to tell the tale that they had proved the roundness of the Earth, existence of time zones and had embraced the globe and that they were finally aware of the magnitude of the world in which they lived. The children's imaginations were running wild - they asked where the pirates were and why they could not climb up the rigging to the crows nest and look out for the enemies approaching the ship! We managed to divert their attention with the promise of more fun in the park and an ice cream to end a fascinating day. If you are heading back to the UK you can visit the Nao Victoria in Brixham from 29th April to 1st May 2017.

Nerja

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

La Herradura

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.
