Valencia & Las Fallas Festival

Valencia is Spain's third largest city and one full of treasures to explore. From the ancient, medieval and ultra modern, which all stand appealingly alongside each other, with Roman remains, Christian cathedrals, futuristic bridges and one of the biggest festivals in Spain, Las Fallas.

V

alencia is only a 5 hour car journey from our part of the Costa Del Sol and a perfect time to visit is the second week in March for one of the most iconic festivals in Spain called Las Fallas. Just imagine hundreds of colourful paper sculptures filling the streets, then suddenly these works of art are burned in dramatic bonfires that initiate an all night party atmosphere lasting until dawn.

Las Fallas 15th to 19th March The "ninots" (large paper puppets) are displayed all over the city for everyone to see. There are hundreds of these intricate figures, towering 7 metres tall and often depicting popular public figures in a satirical way. If this spectacle is not your thing there are other events taking place on the week of the "fallas" including a flower offering procession from 3.30pm in the afternoon on the 17th and 18th March that concludes in the Plaza de la Virgin. Or how about the magnificent paella cooking contest, a dish which is the speciality of Valencia. Here you can try up to 500 different paellas and decide which is your favourite. The highlight of the "fallas" is "la crema" or the burning of the sculptures which takes place on the final day in the Plaza de Ayuntamiento. At 10pm in the evening the show starts with the burning of the children's sculptures and continues throughout the night with the larger fires of the bigger sculptures, until the final fire which brings with it massive crowds, music and fireworks displays.

The City of Arts and Sciences Whilst you are appreciating the Valencian culture, no trip here is complete without a visit to the amazing arts and sciences museum which sits on the diverted Turia river bed. It comprises continued on page 10 8 THE MARKET PLACE

an opera house, a science museum, an IMAX cinema, a planetarium, Europe's largest aquarium and lots of restaurants. Every one of these structures is a masterpiece of modern architecture by the local master architect, Santiago Calatrava who also has completed The new World Trade Centre and the Turning Torso in Sweden. Although the government of Valencia were recently a little unhappy with their prodigal son as he overspent on the budget for the buildings and it left the community in debt!

The Central Market This building is incredible, built in 1914 but it still seems more modern than any skyscraper. It's modernist styling makes it one of the largest and oldest markets in Europe. With over a thousand stalls which are mostly food but also include souvenirs and restaurants. It is a popular destination for locals and tourists and the atmosphere is one not to be missed.

The Turia Gardens The river Turia flowed through the centre of Valencia until the 1960s. After some disastrous floods, authorities diverted the river to the south of the city. As a result of that the Turia Gardens were born. They really are a spectacular setting for sports, walking, jogging and biking, with plenty of trees and are traffic free. Relax and take in the chilled environment of this amazing space where you can take a picnic with the family whilst admiring the wonderful oasis around you.

Valencia Beaches Valencia is blessed with wonderful beaches to it's Eastern side. They are a magnet for sun worshippers, water sports enthusiasts and those who enjoy the sea. The main city beaches are Playa Malvarrosa and Las Arenas. To the South are Pinedo and El Saler beaches and to the North lie Puig, Canet and Puebla de Farnals.

10 THE MARKET PLACE

The Old Quarter The old part of Valencia is one of the best surviving and most beautiful in all Spain. It is a charming maze of old winding streets with ancient buildings. The Barrio del Carmen deserves a stop off, it is packed with churches, towers, museums and Roman walls.

The Cathedral The cathedral is a fabulous basilica with a diverse history. It stands in the centre of what was once the Roman city. Its foundations are that of a temple that was dedicated to the goddess Diana, then it became a Visigoth cathedral and then a Moorish mosque. In the 13th century it was converted to a Gothic style church and in the 18th century it had a lot of restoration on the facade and rounding of the gothic arches and introduction of corinthian columns. It also contains two exceptional paintings by Francisco Goya.

Get Cheaper Petrol and Diesel Important Note! In Spain CLH Group oversees the storage, transport and distribution of fuel to the whole country and establishes the minimum standards fuel must meet. Hence fuel sold at supermarkets or independent petrol stations is not of lower quality. Given the ongoing confusion, many locations have opted to clearly state which brand supplies their fuel, look for signs saying e.g. “Supplied by Repsol”. To justify higher prices, big brands say that their fuels contain additives to optimise engine performance.

Loyalty Cards

The Spanish fuel market is heavily concentrated with just a few major brands and little price competition. In some Spanish regions low cost petrol stations have been banned, making it even harder to save money. Take a look at our tips on how to pay less when filling your car.

by MoneySaverSpain.com

Background Any petrol company that already has 30% of the market in a province in Spain is not allowed to open any more petrol stations in that area, but this hasn’t affected the existing situation. You’ll find practically the same prices at Repsol, Cepsa and BP (the Big Three). It’s hardly surprising given that together they control over 70% of the market. Added to this, Spanish consumer organisations are not in favour of unmanned low cost petrol stations. Some regions in Spain have banned them outright.

Cheapest Option 1: Your Local Supermarket The number of petrol stations located at Carrefour, Alcampo and Eroski are increasing, as well as at smaller regional supermarkets. At Carrefour every time you fill up you’ll get 8% back on your Carrefour loyalty card. If you live near a Carrefour petrol station, even if you don’t shop there normally it’s worth using their free Carrefour Club Card just to accumulate this discount. Other supermarkets offer lower fuel prices directly to attract people to shop at their stores and they may offer additional discounts or promos.

Cheapest Option 2: Low Cost / Independent Petrol Stations (limited locations) Self-service locations with no extras, and normally no personnel. Prices range from 5 to 10 cents/litre lower than average market prices. Don’t expect loyalty cards, a shop or a car wash. Many locations do not offer premium fuel. To find a low cost petrol station near you, Google “gasolinera low cost (your location)”. 12 THE MARKET PLACE

All major petrol stations offer free loyalty cards with discounts. Some of these are directly linked to a credit card with a yearly fee that may wipe out the savings: Repsol Visa Card offers a 3 cents/litre direct discount on fuel at Repsol, Campsa and Petronor. The card is only free the first year unless you meet a minimum threshold of litres purchased. Additionally the Repsol Mas programme offers fuel discount vouchers when you shop at major stores, including: Amazon or El Corte Ingles: Get 8% back in fuel vouchers Decathlon: 10% MediaMarkt: 6% Cepsa Loyalty Card “Porque Tu Vuelves” has a points system, 1 litre = 5 points, increased by 40% when you use your local petrol station. Buy in their stores and you’ll get 15 points per euro spend. Accumulate 1000 points to get a 1 euro discount. Note that Carrefour also offers 4% cashback on your Carrefour loyalty card if you use Cepsa petrol stations. BP PremierPlus offers a basic 3 cents/litre discount, higher discounts are available for more litres purchased. Discounts are not direct but accumulated in a monthly voucher. Vouchers are limited to 24 euros / month, you have 2 months to use them. Register online to exchange points for each litre purchased for gifts and discount vouchers from their catalogue. Shell Club Smart gives 200 welcome points when you request their card. Each litre of fuel equals one point, exchange points for gifts from their catalogue. Galp Fast offers 1 or 2 points per litre depending on the type of fuel purchased. Galp also has a number of additional benefits with companies such as Orange, Mapfre or Asisa. Exchange points for discounts on fuel or gifts from their catalogue.

Use The Official Website Or An App The Industry Ministry offers a website in English that shows fuel prices, (if link opens Spanish version, you’ll need to click on “welcome” at the top of the page to change the language). In order to use it you’ll have to: · Select petrol station · Choose your province · Choose your town · Select the type of fuel (the list also includes home heating fuels) · Select “retail” · Check the boxes for “most economical P.S.” (petrol station). Additional, if you live in a big city you can also put in your address and/or postcode. You’ll see a list of the current prices, you can also use their mobile version for when you’re on the move.

If you’re looking for an app, then the best are: Gasolineras España (Android & iOS). Gasolina & Diesel España (Android)

Trumps Bridge Club Nerja Annual Tournament Took place this year on Saturday February 9th at 2.30pm. This was held at The Nerja Club Hotel Capistrano. 16 tables of members competed.

Congratulations go to Winners of the competition Ewa Celinska and Derek Winterflood. Prize presented by Marion Talbot.

The competition was divided into two sections playing identical boards. An Arrow switch final movement determined the overall winners. Congratulations go to:- Derek Winterflood and Ewa Celinska 61.25% Runners up:- Cris Layton and Mark Overton 58.75% Third Place:- Jette Lind and Andrew Gore. Liz Cogley proposed the vote of thanks to Marion Talbot for organising the event. Our thanks and appreciation go to Micheal O'Brien for preparing the boards in advance. Also the Neja Club Hotel for a very successful event.

Almijara Bowls Club Ladies Pairs Championship On 21st January the Almijara Bowls Club held their Ladies Pairs Championship. Teams were drawn at random and had to play 6 six end matches. After a hard fought competition Jean Swaffield and Jeanette Mogg won the trophy.

The Nerja Players March 5th - Two short plays 1. If I Can't Take It With Me, I Won't Go! 2. Funeral Tea The Nerja Players present two one-act plays with a common theme. Both share the black humour frequently surrounding the otherwise solemn event of a funeral. One set in rural Ireland, the other in Yorkshire, they feature typical and entertaining characters to meet our expectations, providing a hilarious scenario of confusion, misunderstandings and an unexpected twist in the tail. A light-hearted and fun evening!

March 19th - The Two Bees Take On Brexit John Brentley & Peter Burch will once again put their heads together and attempt to make you laugh. No matter where you stand, remain, leave or somewhere in the middle, this evening is all about letting go of our differences and find some good old-fashioned humour through all the chaos of the past two years. 14 THE MARKET PLACE

A token and vote of thanks for organising the annual competition was presented by Elizabeth Cogley to Marion Talbot for organising this Trumps Bridge Club event 2019.

Tips and practical ideas to make your home a better place A home is practically everything. Where we live, where we grow, where we feel, where we take refuge and where we rest. As time passes, we recycle spaces and adapt rooms to new needs that arise along the way. We evolve and change and that includes our homes too. Today we list five small changes that will make your home a better place. 1) Organisation Having a well organised and orderly house makes us happier. In fact, a chaotic environment is often the reflection of our mind and makes it quite difficult to be comfortable at home. Although you will have to apply yourself and be disciplined, it is always advisable to have tools and accessories that help you to have your clothes, belongings and personal belongings properly in order. There are wall boards on which you can hang keys, pens and jewellry, so that you do not have to look around the house every day before leaving for work. Because if you win order, you also gain time. In the bedroom you can get wardrobes and drawers for clothes, shoe cabinets and even drawers which you can install under the bed, to store duvets, cushions or pillows. You can also try clothes boxes and baskets to install in the laundry. Being organised is also important in the kitchen. In IKEA you can find a wide range of food storage containers. It is good to have them close at hand and to

essential for any space. The light must adapt to the needs of each space and moment. The light you need for dinner is not the same as what you need to read or rest at night on the sofa while you enjoy your favourite box set. It is important that you select the right lamp that adapts well to each space. For instance, lamps situated in the dining room are not the same as what we would use in the bathroom. Lighting is also essential in spaces where we study, we must take into account the type of bulb and the warmth of it. Another way to provide a different touch to any room is through different decorative lighting solutions. A garland, a screen or a simple table decoration, for a few euros, can give a very special warmth to any room in the house.

3. The Power of Textiles Sometimes there is no time for renovations or major furniture changes. What if, instead, you just renew textiles? With them you can renew any room in the house quickly and easily. You have the option to change the cushion covers, choose a new carpet and match curtains or blinds and the renovation effect is immediate with little hassle. You can also dress your sofa with throws or blankets, ideal for winter or take a moment to refresh towels . Choose a different colour, that fits with the tones of your bathroom. Take a look at the colours that are on trend, there are many pastels, usually warm, but also fresh.

4. Renew the Decoration keep them in good condition. Tired of having spoons, ladles, and spice pots scattered about the kitchen? In that case, the best thing you can do is opt for good storage solutions , with which to properly organize all these utensils.

2. Light up With Pleasure It may not be the first thing you think about when you move into a house, but soon you will realise that lighting is 16 THE MARKET PLACE

Seasonal changes can be a perfect reason to renew the decoration of your home. IKEA offers new decor at each change of season, so that you can renew your home with special elements depending on the time of year. To create a perfect environment, you can opt for small decorative elements, such as glass boxes, bells, hourglasses, they will help you to give personality to the different rooms of your home.

Candles are always a winning option, especially since you can renew them as many times as you want, choosing between different colours and perfumes. Together with them, the frames, drawings and pictures can help you to give the living room, the hall or the rooms of your home the touch of design they need. 5. Space for Children Kids are very skilled at spreading toys throughout the house. In a home with children it is impossible to have everything perfectly organised and tidy. For that reason, and as long as there is space, it may be useful to dedicate an area for play. Here you can include storage modules, for storing toys, paintings, notebooks, puzzles, books, and so on. You also have the possibility to choose different textiles, colourful and fun, plus carpets or rugs, always useful to give warmth to the play area/room.

Car News First Driving Impressions – Toyota Corolla, European Press Event, Majorca The first generation Corolla was launched in 1966, and now the 12th version has just been introduced.

O

ver the past 53 years of the Corolla, much has changed. Even a name change for a few years in many countries, but mainly in Europe. Toyota were asked at the event why the name was changed back to Corolla after Auris, and depending on who you spoke to, you got a different answer. But whatever the reason, and I’m not really sure it is that important, Corolla is back - and I guess its here to stay. We went to a very sunny Majorca, and all the cars were lined up outside the airport, ready to go. Toyota are offering three body-styles: British built five-door hatch and a Touring Sport (estate) and a Turkish built four-door saloon. The model line-up is a bit complicated. The only thing that isn’t complicated is that no diesel will be offered. The saloon is only available with a 1.8-litre Hybrid in the UK, though other countries will be offered a 1.6 petrol. The hatch and estate are available with a 1.2 petrol, 1.8 Hybrid and 2.0 Hybrid, but not all grades are available with some engines. The 1.8 is likely to take the lions share of UK sales. We left Palma airport in a 1.8 Hybrid and headed off into the centre of the island. This engine has been around for a while now, and has proved to be very reliable, with hardly any problems or warranty claims. This 4th Generation 1.8-self-charging petrol engine develops 120 bhp, goes from 0-62 mph in 10.9 seconds (hatch) 11.1 seconds (estate) 11.0 (saloon) but when driving it does not feel slow or sluggish; it actually feels quicker than the figures suggest. The self-charging certainly does work and helps reduce emissions, and improve fuel consumption. During our time with the 1.8 it achieved around 60 mpg, which we thought was a good result. The CVT gearbox is much improved over previous models, that in the past made horrendous noises as you pressed the accelerator and waited for it to pick up speed, while the gearbox and engine made as much noise as possible. No… all of that changed a couple of years ago, and makes the Hybrid much more palatable to drive. We went to the hotel for a bit of lunch, then into a Corolla fitted with the all-new 2.0-litre Hybrid. This engine develops 178 bhp, goes from 0-62 mph in 7.9 seconds (hatch) 8.1 seconds (estate) so is quite a bit quicker off the blocks than the 1.8…. but in reality, and having driven both back-to-back there didn’t seem much in it. This new 2.0 engine has an uprated Dual VVT-i system with VVT-iE electric intelligent variable valve-timing on the intake side. This uses an electric motor instead of oil pressure to control timing which improves output and 20 THE MARKET PLACE

efficiency while reducing emissions. I'm not entirely sure what this means, but it must be correct, as I copied it out of the press pack ..!! Toyota told us that the 1.8 has improved response and linearity together with traditional benefits of fuel efficiency and a relaxing drive. The new 2.0-litre builds on these qualities with greater power on demand, effortless acceleration and more dynamic, ‘fun-todrive’ characteristics. Which I probably agree with, though I’m not entirely sure what linearity means... but does that matter? It sounds good! Toyota developed the petrol Hybrid many years ago, when nobody had really heard of Hybrids. They have stuck with their policy and made it the key element in their strategy. They went against everything, and everybody else by sticking to their guns, and in the long term it has paid off, as the world is changing and efficient petrol engines with lower C02 figures are now wanted, and needed. It has been more good luck than management that this has paid off for Toyota, and even the most senior people within the organisation would admit to this. The Hybrid system works very well, and as Toyota have developed it over the years, it has improved with every new generation. The engine produces electricity which is stored in the batteries, and electricity is also generated when the car is decelerating: slowing down or braking, and the engine shuts down when it is not needed. This system saves fuel and reduces emissions, and all works splendidly well, you really cannot feel what’s going on under the bonnet. Toyota did not have any 1.2 petrol-engined cars in Majorca for us to test, but this 4-cylinder 16-valve DOHC produces 114 bhp and goes from 0-62 mph in around 9.5 seconds. Four models will be available: Icon which starts from £21,300, Icon Tech, Design and Excel with prices going up to £30,340. In Majorca I only drove the Hatch and Touring Sports, which will be by far the biggest sellers in the UK It really doesn’t matter what Toyota have called this car. Auris is gone, finished, and Corolla is back. It is very well built, and at a reasonable price. But like all C-Sector cars and estates, they need to be watching over their shoulders as the SUV sector continues to get more popular and sales continue to grow, and pinch business from other sectors. deliveries, shipments etc. that get mixed up between the two places.

Also assisting were geologists, machine workers, topographers, technicians of roadworks and services from Malaga and the Junta de Andalucia, the emergency services, psychologists and civil protection technicians.

Other demands are also on the agenda such as a new football pitch for the town, a new access from the A7 motorway and improvements for the beaches of El Morche.

Remains of ancient villages from 10th and 11th centuries discovered near Arenas. The council of Velez Malaga will get together in the coming weeks to finalise the plans that were started over 5 years ago to pedestrianise the main centre in Velez Malaga of the Plaza de las Carmelitas directly outside the Town Hall. The programme of works has now been established and soon the contract to do the work will be signed. The budget is for 800,000 euros, the new works will allow for the continuation of other works that have been going on, so that Velez can have a similar area to the successful one in Torre del Mar. The city council also wanted to send a message of calm to the public after complaints arose on social media platforms a few weeks ago. The Mayor said, "We are aware that the works are an inconvenience but we must think that the result will mean a true transformation of the city, full of new opportunities, new jobs and greater wealth for businesses, similar to other projects like this."

The recove of Julen cost 700,000 Euros.

Police intercept more than a thousand doses of anabolic steroids.

The Axarquia region is home to some of the most important Nasrid monuments in the world, such as the remains of the Bentomiz Castle in Arenas and the historic quarter of Frigiliana. However, there are still hidden treasures to be found. Two researchers recently discovered the remains of two ancient villages of the Caliphate period 10th and 11th centuries, located in the vicinity of Arenas and Corumbela. This place is named as "El Viejo" in a book that is due to be published later this year. You can see with the naked eye that there are numerous ceramics of Caliphate origin in the vicinity. Both findings have been reported to the town of Arenas, whose Mayor has visited the sites. The finds have also been reported to the Delegation of Culture of the Junta de Andalucia in Malaga so that they can be studied and protected.

New El Morche neighbourhood demands football pitch, link from A7 and improvements to the beach The Public Administration and Interior Minister and spokesperson in Andalucia confirmed that the first estimate of costs to try to rescue the little boy, Julen, down the well were put at 700,00 euros. The cost will be met entirely by the Junta de Andalucia. The rescue took 13 days and was a real work of civil engineering in an emergency situation, against very adverse terrain conditions. More than 300 people gave their help in coordinating tasks. Among the professionals were the Hunosa Mining Rescue Brigade sent from Asturias, the 22 THE MARKET PLACE

A project for the A7 access has already been made, but at the moment it is just a study - these type of requests can take a long time. Regarding the football pitch, the politicians are unable to agree on a location and with elections coming, this proposal will probably be put on the back burner.

The new El Morche Neighbourhood Association now has more than 600 members; the president of the association is Irene Bueno who is a Nurse at the Health Centre in Nerja. She confirmed that she wanted to create an association for El Morche to improve the quality of life for her fellow citizens there. Her primary aim is to get El Morche included and registered as a "Singular Population Entity" because at the moment it is categorised under Torrox Costa and there are all sorts of problems with locating addresses, sending

The National Police have arrested a man 29 years of age in Velez Malaga for his involvement in a crime against public health. He has been distributing anabolic substances to third parties, who then sell on to their customers. One of the distributors was arrested in Malaga capital when he was carrying 315 doses of the anabolic substances. The investigation of the distributor in Malaga identified that the main distributor was located in Velez Malaga. Once located he was arrested. The police seized 817 anabolic steroid pills, 83 injectable bottles of steroids, 312 syringes and 5,415 euros in cash.

The call between the municipalities of Nerja and Almunecar and the Life Conhabit team has been welcomed to establish new measures that help conservation of habitats in the natural park area. Brexit Bumblings..... What's happening with Brexit? Our once respected country is turning into a bumbling mess!! The politicians cannot agree and with only a few weeks to go it seems later this month we will crash out of Europe with no deal on the table - something that most businesses are opposed to.

B

oth remainers and supporters of Brexit all agree the Conservative party handling of Brexit has been disastrous but that seems to be the one and only thing that people can agree on. But the question is what would any other political party have been able to do any differently? Pro EU remainers (of which there are many right here in Spain) are distressed at the end which is now nearing for Britons right to live and work in other EU countries being taken away. People in Spain and other EU countries still face uncertainty as to what is going to happen! (Although lots of good advice has been provided by the Consulate, Citizens Advice Bureau and local professionals. They confirm to make sure your paper work is up to date, ie your residencia, padron, changing your driving licence to

a Spanish one, up to date tax returns etc). Brexiteers are concerned that their dream of leaving the EU and being free of the Brussels bureaucratic shenanigans will be delayed or that a deal will keep Britain bound to the EU forever! It has been more than two and a half years since Britain voted with a 52% majority to leave Europe and 48% voted to remain in the EU. What followed were many months of tense negotiations, where Brexit secretaries, Brexit ministers and others appointed by the British government dropped like flies and quit their posts as they realised that the task of Brexit was not for them! Theresa May at last struck a deal with the EU but that deal has been resoundingly rejected by parliament. May is still seeking changes to the deal to try to eliminate the contentious point of the Irish backstop but with EU leaders insisting that they won't come back to the negotiating table it seems the future

of Brexit has been dealt a BIG barricade and it is stalemate for now. On top of that May insists she is not delaying and has refused to rule out a no deal Brexit - arrrrgghhhh! In the meantime the British economy has stalled with just 0.2% growth in the 4th quarter of 2018. Political life and goals have been put on the backburner, with no firm agreements businesses and citizens in the UK and the EU are left agonizing as to what will happen. Well, whatever happens on the 29th March it seems there cannot be reconciliation between the current divide until Brexit actually happens (in whatever context that it takes place and when, and if, it happens!) When talking to Brits about Brexit the overwhelming response is. "Oh no, not Brexit." The opinion is pretty clear whether you are a staunch remainer or a brexiteer, everyone is SICK to death of Brexit and folk just want it over and done with now.... ROLL ON 29th March. Amen! For those who still have an ounce of curiosity left, there is a Brexit meeting being held in Nerja at the Plenary Hall on the 6th March at 11am. Booking in advance recommended. See Events page 36 for futher detail.

CLUB NERJA RUGBY

This has been a very successful season for Club Nerja Rugby and it is sitting on top of the Andalusian Eastern second division having won nine games out of the ten played so far. They have also picked up eight try-bonus points to take their points to 48. Nerja have their final two league games in March. They are away to CD Granada on 3rd March and home to second-placed Jaen on 10th March. This latter game is likely to decide the final league positions but Nerja beat Jaen 33-18 earlier in the season so will go into the game with some confidence. Following the league campaign there is a system of play-offs against other Andalusian second division sides. These begin on 31st March. The home games are played at Estadio Enrique Lopez Cuenca, near the large SuperSol. The kick-off for the 10th March game will be affected by a soccer tournament being played at the stadium earlier in the day. Watch local newspapers or CNR Facebook page for confirmation of the details of this game and the play-offs.

The Arts Society Nerja (Formerly Nerja NADFAS)

Hidden canvasses in Málaga The Arts Society Nerja started off this season with an outstanding lecture by an English Street artist Doug Gillen: Hidden canvasses. We then went off to discover the Hidden canvasses of Málaga which are concentrated in two neighbourhoods: Soho, rundown but now being gentrified and Langunillas, which is still run down. The Street Art in both neighbourhoods are stunning but the differences are interesting. The trip was so popular we had to run it twice! Lagunillas is a rundown area which due to huge problems with urban renewal ended up with many houses taken down but no new houses built. It is these walls of abandoned plots and houses that local artists started to use as their canvas to bring colour, hope and life to their neighbourhood. We met one of the most prolific artists of Lagunillas, Doger, an absolute gem of a young man, very talented and amiable. The artists are local artists, most often autodidacts. We see amazing, super realistic portraits of local heroes, like Tuesday March 12th 2019 Miguel Chamorro who started beautifying the neighbourhood The Cultural Centre (Casa Cultura) Calle Granada, Nerja. with murals and started 6pm (Doors open 5pm, tickets only available on the night) workshops for the children.

In 2015 the Musee d’Orsay mounted a fascinating exhibition entitled ‘Splendours and Miseries’ featuring how ‘ladies of the night’ had been depicted in art. At the same time Tate Britain displayed paintings on the theme of ‘Alcohol and Art’ The two subjects are often closely interwoven in the work of many great artists including Hogarth, Rowlandson, Cruikshank, Degas, Lautrec and Picasso and others.

ABOUT JOHN IDDON

Lecturer and Guide at both Tate Britain and Tate Modern. Ran an MA course in Heritage Interpretation at St Mary’s University College. Has lectured freelance to numerous art societies, to the National Trust and the Peggy Guggenheim Gallery in Venice. Lectures on art for cruises. In 2012, he wrote the new guidebook to the newly opened Strawberry Hill. 28 THE MARKET PLACE

We see a whole pageant of portraits of the locals: children, old ladies, Flamenco dancers and singers who became famous, a young man who is always trying to get into any photo that is published in a newspaper, or maybe the most moving of all, the huge portrait of Pablo Raez, a young boy who died of leukaemia at age 20, popular on social media, always positive. His slogan was: Siempre fuerte. He started a campaign for bone marrow donation which made donations go up 1000%. It is the portrait of this boy made by Lalone that gives the people of Lagunillas positive energy even though people are being evicted and Airbnb is moving in to the neighbourhood. Soho is a very different,

managed by the Centro Arte Contemporaneo, the eyecatching murals, high up on tall buildings, have been commissioned, the artists are mostly national and international artists who have been to art academies.

Like Obey, a famous American Artist who has exhibited in many museums, we know his work from the Obama campaign poster or the Person of the Year on the front page of the Time. There are also some black and white murals that are quite disconcerting and make you stop and think like those of the Belgian Artist Roa of rats or the South African Artist Faith 47 of a fragile and vulnerable looking young woman. And what about the Parisian artist Invader who has more than 50 mosaics, illegal, up on buildings. Download his app Flashinvader and try to gain points by finding them!

Everything you need to know about Kidney Stones So, what are kidney stones?

Measure portion size using your hand

Kidney stones, or renal calculi as they're also known, are made up of waste chemicals. They can be really small - as tiny as a grain of sand - or as large as a golf ball. How do you know if you have a kidney stone?

As studies have shown, the more food and drink a person has on their plate or in their cup, the more they’ll devour. Portion control is one of the most significant challenges for people. There’s also the common belief that portion control doesn’t matter if you’re eating healthy food, which simply isn’t true. And researchers at Harvard Medical School in the US agree. They say our hands are the perfect instruments for sizing up meals and snacks as you can simply gauge how much of a particular food to eat by measuring it against a particular part of your hand. Regardless of accuracy, the fact someone is paying attention to how much food they’re putting on their plate is a really good thing. How to measure a serve with your hand Peanut butter: 1 thumb (1 tbs) Butter: 1 fingertip (1 tsp) Cheese: 2 fingers (40g) Milk: 1 whole fist (1 cup) Cooked porridge: 1 handful (1/2 a cup) Cooked veg: 1 front fist (1/2 cup) Cooked pasta: 1 fist (1/2 cup) Cooked meat: 1 palm (80g-100g) Almonds: 1 handful (20 nuts) Raw salad: 2 handfuls (1 cup)

Apples consist of 25% air, which is why they float. 34 THE MARKET PLACE

The truth is, kidney stones can cause no symptoms at all. But if a stone blocks the entrance of your urinary tract, or is in the process of being ‘passed’ (coming down your urinary tract), it can be incredibly painful. In fact, the pain of passing a kidney stone can be so bad, it's often compared to childbirth. The pain is usually located around the lower back and can move across to your front. It can even cause you to feel nauseous or vomit. When you have kidney stones, your urine may become cloudy or you may notice blood in your wee. Because they can block the urinary tract, kidney stones can also lead to urinary tract infections (UTIs), which can cause fevers and chills. How do you get kidney stones? In most cases, there's no

clear reason why people develop kidney stones. That said, they are more common in men than women. Kidney stones are more common in people who take certain medication (such as for cancer or HIV), and in people who have certain medical conditions, especially those that affect your levels of calcium or oxalate. Recent research also found that taking antibiotics may also increase your risk of kidney stones. If I’ve had a kidney stone, am I likely to have another? Unfortunately, if you've had a kidney stone, your risk of getting a second one is higher. How do you treat kidney stones? Thankfully, the majority of kidney stones pass on their own. You may need pain relief during this time. If the pain is really bad, you might need to be in hospital for this. Less commonly, you may require treatment for kidney stones. The type of treatment may depend on the size of your stone, and where it is located. Treatment may include having a scope, or possibly surgery.

Nerja History Group 2018-19 Annual Visit The Historic Sights & Gastronomic Delights of Jerez On 22nd January, 30 of us of mixed nationalities, set off from Nerja towards Jerez, stopping outside Antequera for breakfast. This is always a nice ice-breaker, especially for those who haven’t travelled with us before. Suitably refreshed, we continued through beautiful countryside to Jerez and straight to Bodega Fundador. Here we were

given a guided tour, an explanation of the sherry making process and a visit to their Museum with old, original equipment, including shoes with nails in the soles for crushing the grapes. That was

thirsty work! A tasting was undertaken followed by a delicious lunch of tapas, paired with 5 Harvey’s sherries. We then checkedin to the Soho Boutique Hotel (a former winery) for some R & R before meeting for a short walk to have a guided visit of a private Palace. In spite of its faded elegance, it was enjoyable to see such a Palace which is lived-in and to be shown

around by a member of the family. We then had a short walk to a wonderful fish restaurant for dinner - the quality & quantity of the food and attention shown to us by the staff was excellent. It had been a long day and so we walked back to the Hotel and retired for the night. After a buffet breakfast, our Guide came to the hotel to collect us for a walking tour of the City. His commentary was very good and he included some amusing anecdotes. He is a local of Jerez and very passionate about his City - there is a lot to see! His Tour finished by escorting us to the Bodega Tradicion, a smaller bodega, which only makes rare, old sherries - some are 30 years old. Here we had another explanation of the process which differed from yesterday’s, due to the age of the sherries. We also had a very tasty tasting (!) and then time to look at their private Art Collection which includes works by Zuberan, Goya, Velazquez & El Greco. Some people decided to take taxis back to the Hotel

to relax before meeting to go by coach to a special Flamenco show - wow. This was followed by dinner at a really wonderful restaurant, a former winery, for a very special pairings menu. It was stunning. More wow! Next morning, after another delicious breakfast, our luggage was loaded and we set off for a visit to The Palace of Time (go on, guess - yes, a Museum of clocks. The Museum is set in beautiful grounds with a large Gyroscope on the central lawn. The Palace itself is a neoclassical style Mansion, dating from 1881 and refurbished in 2002. It houses more than 300 clocks - English, French & German timepieces, displayed beautifully, with classical music in the background. The atmosphere is so calm and tranquil apart from on the hour, when a fusion of tinkles, tunes and gongs announce their presence! Our guide Miriam

was excellent. She is very knowledgeable, has very good English & a lovely personality. Some of us enjoyed a walk in the gardens before boarding the bus for our visit to the Escuela de Caballos and a performance of the Dancing Horses. This, as always, was wonderful. The horses look in such good condition and seem so proud to

strut their stuff. When the performance ended, we had time to buy some souvenirs before heading off for lunch. This time, a selection of raciones to share, with a choice of sherries and wines - a wonderful way to end our stay in Jerez. We boarded our coach for the journey back to Nerja with a comfort stop en route. A very happy group - people have already been asking “where next”? ! Cms, January 2019

The Nerja History Group meets each month between October - April for a Talk about some aspect of Spanish history. The following week, there is a day-trip to a place of interest. The 2 night 3 day trip is usually an annual event. Meetings, Talks and visits are conducted in English. www.nerjahistorygroup.com nerjahistorygroup@yahoo.com 38 THE MARKET PLACE

Manish's Zodiac predictions - March Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com

Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

This is a strong time for making financial plans and strategies. This can be a cycle in which you learn significant things about a partner, finances, shared finances, taxes, and debts. Professionally, you may be tougher than usual now, and more inclined to follow mental or practical considerations. You may also be especially interested in motives and hidden elements of life at this time.

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

This is a time when you have more mental initiative than usual, wanting to put your ideas into action. You tend to make crucial decisions and rely more on yourself and your observations when making decisions, depending less on what others think you should do. If committed, there may be some resistance to merging fully with a partner, as there is a need to remain independent, separate, and distinct even in a partnership.

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)

This is a time of increased learning and communicating on professional levels, and also of stronger impact, particularly in terms of what and how you communicate. You seem to be more accountable for what you say and what you know. There can be more movement, a hectic pace, or increased communications in the work you do at this time. You feel nurtured when you achieve your ambitions.

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

This is a time for clarifying and editing projects and goals. You are faced with the need to temper your enthusiasm or to slow down to avoid overextending yourselves. You may be re-evaluating relationships in terms of whether or not they are contributing to your personal growth. There could be some disagreeableness or uncertainty. You may be aloof from emotions, or distrust emotions as irrational and unpredictable.

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

You might be especially interested in long-range visions, ideals, and goals. Communications and learning are favoured in a general way, and ideas are mostly well-received during this cycle. You may be meeting people, and possibly romantic interests, through the internet, schooling, or travel. You have a strong need to express your personal creativity. You may display dramatic behaviour, and like to make an impact on your surroundings.

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

This is generally a good time for social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group, and networking. A change of pace refreshes. It is time to build networks and cooperate. There is a good ability to successfully combine logic and intuition, and to understand problems taking into account the human element. There is sensitivity to people’s issues now. 42 THE MARKET PLACE

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

You will have a chance to express your needs, passions, and desires now in effective ways. Important contacts can be made with people who share your intellectual interests or who introduce you to new ideas that help you to grow, improve, and expand. Projects prove successful right now, particularly those involving teamwork. Your romantic interactions can take on an intensity you normally wouldn’t expect from casual encounters.

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

You are thinking both resourcefully and intuitively now. It’s also a good time for dealing with problems in close relationships with the goal to heal and move past things. You can be feeling pleasantly attached to, or supported by, your loved ones or family. You are seeking out security, nurturing, and warmth, and are more likely to express these things towards others.

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

There can be a new sense of optimism about the future and a greater love for making plans, as a feeling of direction and purpose is very welcome in your life right now. Conversations can be lively and helpful. It’s a fine time for doing something creative, and perhaps venturing away from the usual routine, although sticking around home and doing something different can work well now.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

You should have an easier time dealing with your career. Decisions that must be made come easier to you, and advancements you’re trying to make come with less effort. This period can be excellent for romance and having fun with love. If single, you can use the energy to put yourself out there and meet new people, but you may feel like playing the field and not taking anything too seriously right now.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

You’re far more focused on your career and the direction your life is taking. You want to make sure that you’re planning ahead and have all of your ducks in a row. You may seem more hard-working, focused, detached, and ambitious. If in a relationship, you can use the energy to make your relationship more exciting and you can be more affectionate.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

You could have a stronger desire for intimacy, needing to feel close to people, and may try to strengthen the bonds you have with people. You come across more intense, brooding, and magnetic. Your friends may seem more emotional to you than usual, and you have an easier time expressing yourself emotionally with your friends or in a group. You could realize a dream that you’ve been working towards.

The Science on Soy Soy seems to have an equal number of promoters and detractors. Should we go out of our way to eat more soy or avoid it? One website touts it as a cure for hot flushes, while another warns it may bring on early puberty. One source says it’s good for your heart, and another says it’s bad for your thyroid. A 2016 survey by the International Food Information Council Foundation revealed that, while 68 percent of participants said they were trying to eat more beans, nuts and seeds, 27 percent said they were trying to eat less soy (which is a bean) as a protein source. Unlike some hot-button food trends, there is a lot of research on soy, allowing food and nutrition professionals to offer evidence-based answers to questions and concerns about soy-based foods and beverages.

Do soy foods contain estrogen? Soybeans contain phytoestrogens, compounds that are similar in structure to the human hormone estrogen (estradiol). In vitro studies have shown that phytoestrogens can interact with estrogen receptors on the surface of human cells, giving them the potential to exert mild estrogenic effects. Phytoestrogens also may have antiestrogenic effects by blocking the more active human estrogen from reaching the receptors. Soy’s potential estrogen agonist and antagonist properties have led to questions about how eating soy might influence hormone levels in men, women and children. The answer: Evidence is mixed.

Does feeding soy to infants or children cause early puberty?

However, a prospective study of prepubertal boys and girls found adding soy protein to the diet on a daily basis for a year did not affect sexual maturation or age of puberty.

Does soy consumption affect male fertility? Among male patients at an infertility clinic, soy foods were associated with a reduction in sperm concentration but not motility, and it was not associated with the success of fertility treatment. Limited evidence addresses this topic and more research is needed.

Does eating soy protect against breast cancer? Epidemiological evidence has linked higher soy food consumption with reduced breast cancer risk. Women from countries such as Japan, where soy foods are central to the diet, experience much lower incidence of breast cancer than Western women who traditionally eat less soy. It appears that eating soy foods early in life may deliver the most protective benefit.

Is soy safe for those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer?

The potential estrogenic effects of soy have been a source of concern for those with hormone-sensitive cancers such as breast cancer. The concern is that even weak phytoestrogens in soy might promote the growth of cancer or its A case-control study found no difference recurrence. However, a 10-year followin age of puberty between children who up study of thousands of women with previous breast cancer diagnosis found were given soy infant formula and kids who were breast-fed or given cow’s milk that soy isoflavone intake from foods did not increase their risk of recurrence. formula. The average age of puberty onset has decreased in Western societies, and the popularity and consumption of soy has increased. Is there a connection? Evidence says probably not.

A cross-sectional analysis of preand post-pubescent girls found no relationship between reported soy consumption and reported age of menarche. A similar analysis of teenage boys found the reported age at puberty was an average of six months earlier for those who reported high soy consumption compared to those who consumed low amounts of soy. 44 THE MARKET PLACE

Can soy relieve hot flushes?

Hot flushes and other menopausal symptoms caused by waning estrogen levels can be affected by many factors, including diet, body weight, exercise and stress. Estrogen replacement therapy often is prescribed to women experiencing hot flushes; could the phytoestrogens in soy foods be potent enough to reduce the hot flashes?

Although a prospective study of Japanese women found that hot flushes were inversely associated with soy consumption, a review of 10 intervention studies found that incorporating more soy foods into the diet did not reliably reduce hot flushes and other symptoms of menopause.

How might soy affect thyroid function? Some warn that soy may negatively affect thyroid function. As long as a person’s iodine intake is adequate, this is unlikely to be a concern. A review of 14 trials found that soy and soy isoflavone from dietary sources and supplements had either no effect or minimal effect on thyroid function in healthy people with normal iodine status. Soy foods may affect the absorption of synthetic thyroid hormone. This does not necessarily mean patients on thyroid replacement need to avoid soy. If their soy food consumption is reasonably consistent, their medication dose can be calibrated to accommodate typical eating patterns: for example, a slightly higher dose to compensate for any absorptioninhibiting effects of soy. Patients with thyroid conditions should discuss this with their health care provider.

Do soy foods lower cholesterol or reduce the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD)? There are at least two potential mechanisms by which soy foods might reduce cholesterol and thereby heart disease risk. Soy contains phytosterols and stanols, plant compounds that have been shown to lower LDL cholesterol in a dose-dependent manner. (These fat-soluble compounds are concentrated in soybean oil.) Whole soybeans also contain soluble fibre, which has been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol. Soy foods may play a role in a hearthealthy diet, especially to the extent that they replace foods higher in saturated fat. However, soy does not appear to be a silver bullet against high cholesterol or heart disease. Healthy Recipe: Tofu Masala Curry

Tofu Masala Curry with Coconut Milk Inspired by our Soy Science article, the Tofu Masala is a spicy preparation of protein rich soya chunks with hot steamed rice. The preparation of this receipe is an effortless affair with subtle flavours of spices that can be a top option for a lazy weekend menu.

PREPARATION (serves - 4)

INGREDIENTS

1) Heat a teaspoon of oil in a heavy bottomed pan. Add the cumin, curry leaves and green chilies and saute them for a few seconds. Add the onions, ginger, garlic and saute until the onions become soft and translucent. 2) Add sliced tomatoes and saute for 2 minutes on high heat until the tomatoes soften. Once the tomatoes soften, add the coriander powder, red chilli powder and turmeric powder, mix well. Cook for half a minute. 3) Add tofu and saute in the masala for 2 to 3 minutes. Finally add coconut milk and about a cup of water, salt and curry powder. Mix well and simmer the Tofu Masala for about 5 minutes until the gravy thickens. 4) Once done, check the salt and spice levels and adjust to suit your taste. Transfer the Tofu Masala into a serving bowl and stir in the chopped green coriander leaves and serve with steamed rice.

In December he was seen on the Costa Animal Society (CAS) website by an English lady who was in Nerja on holiday and she immediately fell in love with Munch when she met him in kennels. He was quickly prepared for his journey to the UK but hit a snag in January when the person driving him to meet the transport van became ill en route. Fortunately, Animal Express was very accommodating and transferred the dog to their February trip at no additional cost and Munch was delivered to his new owner in Hertfordshire on February 16.

FEATURED DOG OF THE MONTH

ARTURO Arturo is a one-to-two year-old Podenco male and became the latest addition to the Costa Animal Society’s (CAS) catalogue of rescues after he was found by a Spanish man in the campo a few months ago. The man made a real effort to try and locate an owner in his area but Arturo did not have a microchip and no one recognised the dog. Like most Podencos, Arturo has a lovely, playful personality and gets along well with other dogs. He really enjoys the company of people and will make a wonderful pet but will not be good with cats. Arturo has been fully vaccinated and castrated and is ready for a new life.

After a few more months in kennels he was given the opportunity to live with a fosterer who spends the winter in Nerja each year. She even went out of her way to buy him a yellow ‘Adopt Me’ collar and lead to highlight his status as they walked through town. Sebastian quickly settled into living in a home and the fosterer says that he is the nicest dog she has looked after. His fosterer will return to the UK by the end of March but the extra attention has highlighted Sebastian’s cause and CAS is confident he will be much closer to finding his forever home by then. So we now know that there will be a General Election in Spain at the end of April. Most foreigners will not be able to vote for their preferred party to form the country's next government, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't take an interest and ask the questions that are important to you. If, like your scribe, you have Spanish friends with whom you are accustomed to chewing the cud and passing views over everything and nothing, then pre election time is the perfect period to ask them their viewpoint on subjects that don't usually feature in politics. Tail is non political for we are an association funded by a wide range of people of different backgrounds and many nationalities. However we do have views whenever it comes to trying to get to grips with animal cruelty, lack of understanding over the care of animals, and how much the authorities should be involved with monitoring and helping with such subjects. Over the next month it is our intention to put before each party wanting to be

represented in Torrox (which will be fairly representative for other local towns) a series of questions to elicit their official views on matters relating to those mentioned above. You may find some of the answers enlightening. ********************************** We have the date for our Spring Dog Show, Sunday 14th April at Chiringuito El Barco, as usual entries from midday, judging comme cing from 14 hrs. La Herradura

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Nerja

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
