GINS plays Competition Golf at Anoreta, Baviera and Los Moriscos each week with ad hoc games played at Granada and other courses around the Costa and has an active social calendar for its Members and their partners.

Easter week tourists fill Axarquia's hotels Hotels in Nerja, Almunecar and La Herradura and other parts of the Axarquia were at full capacity for Easter Week. The local councils have attributed the excellent occupancy figures to the unseasonably good weather that drew in the crowds and filled beaches and hotels. Towns like Almunecar have been named as tourist towns of interest in Andalucia because of their extensive programme of Easter processions. Velez Malaga too has round the clock processions, being one of the local towns which is renowed for Easter celebrations and remembrance. Tourists are now well aware of the celebrations and many come from around Spain and abroad to watch the processions. 6 THE MARKET PLACE

Well water causes damage to appliances and boilers An estimated 30,000 residents in VélezMálaga are experiencing problems with boilers, dishwashers and washing machines, with damage amounting to 150,000 euros due to abnormally high levels of limescale in their tap water. The town hall and water company, Aqualia, have attributed the problem, which residents first started to notice at the end of 2016, to the connection to the Molino de las Monjas well last summer. The well had not been used for some time. “We recognise that the water from the well is harder and has more limescale,” said a spokesperson from the water company, which assures customers that the water is “100 per cent drinkable” and that it “passes all the tests”. Although most of the town has been affected to some extent, residents in the Fortaleza and El Romeral neighbourhoods have been worst hit as 50 per cent of their supply comes from the well, according to the town’s Izquierda Unida spokesperson, Miguel Ángel Sánchez. An investigation is currently underway as to the legality of the work carried out by Aqualia to connect to the well.

The emergency services 112 have confirmed that a Dutch hiker had to be rescued at the end of April after falling down a ravine in an area in the Rio Chillar that is difficult to access. Someone alerted the emergency services saying a man had suffered an accident by slipping and falling and his family were trying to rescue him without success. The emergency service coordination centre mobilised firefighters, police and mountain rescue. Firefighters travelled to the area and then a helicopter was requested to take the man to receive medical attention. The man, who had an open wound on his leg, was taken to the hospital Comarcal in Velez Malaga. The man's son, a 19 year old, also had to be treated.

Axarquia's water company commits to recycling and a reduction in consumption Axarquia's water company has now committed to a recycling and reduction in consumption plan. They have said they will also improve water purification facilities at La Viñuela reservoir and waste water from the coastal areas. They are also planning on searching for new water sources that will provide water in the medium to long term.

Sintra - a trip fit for a King

By Jessica Infantino Trumble

A visit to Sintra will have you feeling like a royal for a day. This quaint little town just 20 miles northwest of Lisbon is characterized by cobbled streets, charming shops and fairytale-like castles built high atop lush green hills.

In the 19th century, Sintra was a summer retreat for the Portuguese monarchy who sought to escape the heat, and is an easy and worthwhile daytrip from Lisbon today. Here’s what you need to know. Getting there and around The best way to get to Sintra is by train, which departs from Lisbon’s Rossio station about every 15 minutes. Buy your ticket from a window or vending machine near the tracks or swipe your Lisboa Card at the turnstile – it covers the fare and gives you discounts on some of Sintra’s main sights. Then it’s just a quick 40 minute ride to Sintra, which is the last stop on the line. When you get there you can explore the lower town on foot (and you should), but save yourself the steep hike and take bus #434 to see the sights further up. The bus does a loop every 30 minutes connecting the train station with the main square near the National Palace, Moorish Castle and Pena Palace. You can buy a “Pena circuit” ticket from the driver and hop on and off at any stop on the route.

What to wear Chances are you’ll be doing a lot of walking and castle climbing, so sturdy shoes are a must for Sintra. A light jacket is also a good idea since it’s a little cooler than Lisbon given its coastline location. After all, that’s why the monarchy came here to escape the hot summer months. Rainy season is usually winter through spring (and occasionally in the autumn), so pack an umbrella if you plan on visiting during these months, otherwise you may find yourself waiting in line to buy a poncho in the gift shop at Pena Palace. And since many of Sintra’s sights are outdoors, you may want to bring a hat in the summer.

Sintra highlights One way to tackle Sintra is from the top down, which means your first stop would be Pena Palace. This whimsical palace is an eclectic fusion of architectural styles inspired by the castles of Bavaria. A prime example of romanticism, its bold red, yellow and purple exterior is hard to miss, complete with Moorish turrets, alligator water spouts and a Triton-flanked archway. 10 THE MARKET PLACE

Built by King Fernando II, the palace was home to 5 generations of Portuguese monarchs from the mid-1800s until 1910 when they fled during the Republican Revolution. Thereafter Pena Palace was converted into a museum, and has been restored with a keen attention to detail, looking as if the royal family left just yesterday. As you explore the interior, you may notice that the palace is considerably modern as palaces go (i.e. Versailles in France or Schönbrunn in Vienna, etc.), offering up an intimate look at 19th and early 20th century life. Pena Palace was actually quite progressive, having flush toilets and hot showers in Portugal, a telephone to listen in to the opera when the king didn’t want to make the trek to Lisbon and an enviously well-stocked kitchen by today’s standards. The palace itself is surrounded by the sprawling Pena Park, which is more like a forest than a park with dense trees, plants and other hidden treasures. The palace grounds make for an almost magical downhill walk, otherwise you can pick up bus #434 and head next to the Moorish Castle. Located on an adjacent hilltop, this medieval castle was originally built in the 10th century by the Muslims as a military fort. After years of conquest, rebuilding and the 1755 Lisbon earthquake that caused considerable damage, King Fernando II launched a campaign to restore and preserve the castle and it's surrounding forest. Buy your ticket and then follow the winding forest path to get to the main entrance. Once inside, you can walk along the moss-covered ramparts and climb the stone towers for amazing panoramic views on a clear day. Even if the weather is less than favourable, or you’re left without a view thanks to the thick fog that rolls in off the Atlantic, you can still have a great time, trust me. If you’re feeling especially adventurous, there’s also a zip line that allows visitors to soar through the tree tops at the base of the castle. After you’ve had your fill of castleclimbing, hop back on the bus and get off at the main square where you started for the National Palace (it will stop at Pena Palace first, so sit back and enjoy the ride). This palace also dates back to Moorish times, making it the oldest surviving royal palace in Portugal – and hard to miss thanks to the two white conical kitchen chimneys on top. The interior is truly a feast for the eyes with highly decorated, themed rooms each with a unique story, like the Swan Room (an homage to the king’s daughter) and the Stag Room (adorned with coats of arms and hunting scenes). The National Palace also boasts the largest collection of Portuguese azulejos painted tiles in the world. Other worthwhile sites in Sintra include the Quinta da Regaleira, an elegant estate towards the outskirts of

town with yet another absolutely gorgeous park filled with grottoes, fountains, underground wells and hidden tunnels. It’s an easy 10 minute walk from the National Palace, otherwise you can take a separate bus #435 from the main square.

This bus will also take you the farther out west to Monserrate. This palace has a bit of a different flavour than the others in Sintra, combining Gothic, Moorish and Italian styles of architecture (it’s dome was modeled after the Duomo in Florence) and a subtropical garden with waterfalls, palm trees and other exotic plants. There’s also a free app to guide you through an interactive tour of the palace. For another unique experience, the Toy Museum is just 2 minutes from the National Palace on foot. The museum houses an expansive collection of more than 40,000 items from around the world – from ancient Egyptian toys to Nazi toy soldiers, as well as trains, planes, cars, boats, games, books, dolls and even playthings that belonged to royal children – dating back as far as the 3rd century BC. Finally, for an especially memorable way to see the main sights in Sintra, you can take a horse-drawn carriage tour of the city. Book in advance or look for these old-fashion carriages waiting near the main square. Tours range from 25 minutes to 2 hours and 40 minutes for up to 4 people, and can be customized to make your daytrip extra special. Check out the company Sintratur’s website for tour options and rates.

How to decorate a small bathroom with no window Many of us do not have the luxury of a home with a spacious bathroom with a large window letting in lots of light. Often our circumstances mean we live in a small apartment or flat that may not even have a window. It is therefore essential to know how to make the most of the darkest of spaces. It is possible to make these rooms elegant, just read on! White is your greatest ally

There is nothing like light tones to generate a greater sense of light and space, especially white. So if you have a small bathroom and it is not white, think about doing a spot of decorating or using lighter coloured tiles in the bathroom.

Think carefully about lighting

Since there will be no natural light in your bathroom it is very important to get the lighting right. Panneled downlights or uplights can give the impression of natural light. If you’re short on space, consider mounting wall lights onto the wall to add functional illumination without taking up counter/floor space. But make sure those lights are placed in the correct spots. Mirrored lights add a great feature too. Bright sconces must be at about eye level, casting light directly onto the face from the sides, not above – this is more flattering for everybody.

Bring in some Plants

The right plants can make for a fantastic décor in any space, including that dark bathroom. And nature always finds a way, for plants whose natural habitat is a shadowy forest floor can blossom in very little light. Low-light tolerant plants include Heartleaf Philodendron, ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia), Red Aglaonema, Boston Fern, and the Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum). Avoid succulents in the bathroom, as they won’t last long. Suspended

Bathroom Suite

RUBY SERVICES

Although suspended toilets and sinks are more expensive they give the feel of a lot more space in a small bathroom. You might lose some storage space but gain in visual brightness that translates into more light even if there isn’t any of the natural kind.

A small bathroom does not need any more solid screens or walls for privacy. Consider using glass or textured glass for shower or bath screens, glass bricks or vertical blade screens. These options have a sparkling clean look, allow light through and reflect your artificial lighting.

Ventilation

The absence of windows not only subtracts light but also ventilation. You will need to have a top of the range extractor that will capture the steamy air from the bathroom and any unpleasant odours and renew it with clean air.

7th May at the Teatro Echegaray, Malaga

Philippe Starck is a multifaceted designer who overcomes the established boundaries between design and architecture to defend above all a global vision of creation. Not only does he redesign the everyday, but the French designer also has a visionary ecological awareness. The Pompidou Centre, with more than 385 of Starck’s works, will present his process of creation, unity and multiplicity.

Toy Story told through a musical in a show where the toys come to life. It all begins when Andy returns home after several years at university and stumbles across boxes that he left packed up before he left. When he opens them, he finds the toys that accompanied him throughout his childhood and which gave him great moments. He decides that he has to share them with less fortunate children so that the toys will be happy and will continue to make others happy.

The Best Spring Cleaning Gadgets

5 gadgets that will help you make your home more presentable for those spring/summer visitors! Vileda Robot Vacuum

Sonic Scrubber Pro

So you need to clean, but scrubbing all day doesn't sound too appealing. Thankfully technology has advanced to a critical stage that lets you avoid all that hassle. Think of the Sonic Scrubber Pro as a giant electric toothbrush, but instead of cleaning your teeth, it's cleaning literally everything else in your house. Just get the water, soap, and fire this baby up. Your joints will thank you, I'm sure. Buy from www.amazon.co.uk for just £19.00 - how cheap?

Winbot W930 Window cleaning is that one chore nobody wants to do, and doesn't really get done unless there's something dirtying them up. Thankfully the robots are here to put your mind (and elbows) as ease. It has a vacuum suction mechanism that stops it from falling off, and works with framed and frameless windows of any thickness. It's pricey, but it's a small price to pay - especially when upstairs windows are concerned. Available from www.amazon.es for 222 euros - cheaper than the UK for once!

Everyone's heard of the robot vacuum thanks to the likes of Roomba, and they've been around long enough that they're not obscenely priced. Not quite as cheap as your Tesco Value hoover, but less than what Dyson has to offer. This one from Vileda is rather basic, but do you need a hi-tech vacuum cleaner? I mean, really? It cleans the room by itself, which is all you really need to ask for. There are three settings based on the size of the room in question, sensors that help it navigate around objects (and avoid any unwanted trips down the stairs), with an 80 minute battery life. Like all good vacuums it works on carpets and hard floors. Buy it from www.amazon.co.uk at a price of £95.00

Mocoro Robotic Microfibre Cleaning Ball This advertises itself as a vacuum cleaner, but I see no vacuum technology in there. That said it looks quite interesting, since it's a little robot that rolls around your house using a microfibre coat to pick up dirt and debris. It's basically a robotic duster, capable of hitting those things that a robot vacuum can't get to. The best part? The microfibre coat comes off and can be washed like a regular duster. It's powered by three AA batteries, and rolls around every 15 minutes for up to three hours. Buy it from www.fancy.com for just £69.00

Dyson V6 Mattress If you're not into these fancy robot vacuum cleaners, but still feel like you need some hi-tech convenience, might I suggest the Dyson V6 Mattress handheld vacuum cleaner? It's got that famous Dyson vacuum technology, a single button to empty the tank directly into the bin, built-in filters to remove allergens from the air it takes in, a 20 minute battery life, and a 'boost' mode that increases suction on those hard-to-clean areas. If you need a cord-free experience, with something less unwieldy than a normal vacuum cleaner, this might be the one for you. Buy from www.dyson.co.uk for £269.99

Car News

by Martin Ward

First Driving Impressions Mazda MX-5 RF, UK Press Event. Devon We picked up the MX-5 from Exeter airport in what could be called a fairly dull and dreary day in February - not ideal for driving an open-top two-seater sports car, or at least that’s we thought initially.

I

drove with a fairly tall chappy, and he struggled to get into the car. It was not ideal for him and he did look a little uncomfortable behind the wheel. I’m a bit smaller so I didn’t feel crunched up in the cabin, in fact I felt relaxed and could stretch out... but not him. After just a few miles the sun began to pop out from behind the clouds and we felt that it was time to put the roof down. At the press of a button, the mechanics of the powered roof swung into action and in just a few seconds, the car transformed into an open sports car. But an open car with a difference: through some very clever moving mechanical parts the top part of the roof tucks behind the seats. The first car we drove was powered by a 1.5-litre 131ps petrol engine that did just about have enough power, but you did have to change gear quite a lot to keep it going and to not lose speed. It was a nice sweet engine but at some points of the journey just didn’t seem to have enough oomph… We kept putting the roof up and down, or probably more technically known as the roof, on and off. As we watched it more and more, it became evident that it really was clever design, and even cleverer engineering. There are some fairly hefty cogs and gears that operate the roof, and the chance of it going wrong or packing up looked unlikely as the mechanicals involved looked solid and would probably stand the test of time. After standing watching it go up and down, and down and up, then up and down again, numerous times, we 20 THE MARKET PLACE

were convinced Mazda had created a mechanical masterpiece. So back in the car and off we set across the Devon Moors, roof down, the sun out, and the wind in our hair - well, actually, not much wind, as the design seemed to keep the windy stuff out of the cabin, and I got out at the afternoon tea and clotted cream stop looking just as wind-blown as I normally do – no difference whatsoever. Despite the fact I had travelled over 50 miles in an open top car, my hair was just as out of place as it normally is. RF means Retractable Fastback, and that just about sums it up. The roof is retractable and it does look like a fastback, and I guess lots of people spent many days and weeks coming up with the most obvious name, and then even more time deciding on abbreviating it. After the tea and buns we swopped into a 2.0-litre 160ps petrol and from the minute you got in it, it felt so much better than the 1.5. As we drove it more during the afternoon it just got better and better, and this car was carrying more weight too. Sandwiches with the crusts cut off, two cups of tea, scones and clotted cream. You could leave it in 5th or 6th gear and it would pull away with ease, even going up some of the hills over them-there moors. Such a pleasant engine, quiet and refined, and it would definitely be my choice. It costs around £900 more than the 1.5: well worth the extra money. The RF does look a pretty and attractive sports car, and very different to anything else out there. Despite it looking very modern, it also has a very retro look

to it. There will be many traditional MX-5 owners and admirers who will be horrified that Mazda have dared to turn this iconic sports car into ‘somethingnew’, some wont sleep with worry at this new invention. But it will appeal to other buyers who actually want an open top, affordable sports car, but want the additional advantages of safety, convenience and the fact it doesn’t have a cloth-top – bit of a win-win for Mazda. If you compare a very similar traditional cloth-top MX-5 with the RF, then you are paying around £2,000 more. Some might think this is expensive, but you do get the advantages of the hard-top, and all those hard-wearing cogs and heavy-weight gears. After a couple of hours with the roof down it started to get a bit cold, so the button was pushed, and then we were nice and cosy in a hard-top sports, turned up the heater and we were warm again in seconds, nice…. Prices start from £22,195 OTR and go up to £28,995 OTR for the Launch Edition. The one I would go for is the 2.0-litre 160ps Sport Nav that costs £25,695 OTR and has just about everything you need. An auto is available on this model at an additional cost of £1400. The MX-5 RF, like the MX-5 is so much fun to drive. It makes you smile, and for not a lot of money we had a great day in Devon; fantastic roads, great scenery and a great sports car that was a sheer pleasure to drive.

There we started to walk from side to side when something creaked beneath our feet and we thought what could that be. They were two human skeletons! At the time we didn't think of anything Neolithic or Paleolithic, we thought they were people like us who hadn't managed to find their way out, so we were afraid. We decided to go back to the first small room. One by one we went up the tunnel/slide scrambling with our hands and feet. I was the second to try. I tried twice. It was really difficult. But when we told our story to our evening class teacher Mr Carlos Saura, he was especially interested in the skeletons. Then we prepared another incursion for 16th January 1959 with more tools and lanterns. Carlos Saura and Miss Manoalai Mora, both teachers, came with us. This time we advanced into a new bigger room the "Sala del Cataclismo". When we finished and came out of the caves we could see San Anton's Fires and Maro looked very pretty.

THE MARKET PLACE 37

Are you searching for a new car? Marketplace: Today we want you to introduce to Jürgen Haas and his new company www.autoagent.es. Hi Jürgen, how are you? Tell us something about your service. Jürgen: I’m importing premium 2nd hand cars from Germany on demand. My focus is on cars of German and British makes, between 1-5 years old and with up to 100.000km. The unique thing about my service is, that I offer the complete service from start to finish! Finding the car you want, completing the purchase and managing the import procedures. That means, the customer is only involved twice in the process: in the beginning, when he’s choosing the car and at the end, when he picks it up here in Frigiliana with the Spanish papers and number plates. For further peace of mind, I only promote pre-checked cars from dealers I know. (see the examples below). Marketplace: That sounds good. How do you make sure that you only sell good cars? Jürgen: First of all, I only buy from serious dealers in Germany and, secondly, before the purchase, the car is checked by an independent engineer using an 80 point checklist and also looking at model specific issues. Thereby, I can make sure that the car is in perfect condition. That’s in my interest as well, because I give at least a 1 year warranty on every car. Furthermore, in the whole ‘supply chain’ I only work with professionals: the car dealers, the engineers, the transport company and the gestoria. Marketplace: How long does the whole process take and what extra does it cost? Jürgen: The whole process takes between 2-4 weeks. It depends on the ITV and the DGT, how fast we can get an appointment and how fast they work. This doesn’t cost anything extra. The customer receives the final price before buying, including any costs or taxes and even one year road tax. That means full transparency for the customer – he can check the Spanish market to see if there is a better offer, but I doubt there is, with the high level of convenience and security that I offer!

Marketplace: Why should people buy a nearly new second hand car from Germany? Jürgen: There are several reasons: Firstly, the nearly new 2nd hand car market is much bigger than here in Spain – this gives you the opportunity to choose nearly any colour or specification. Secondly, the cars are, like in the UK, much better looked after. All my cars have a gapless service history and are non-smokers cars and the mileage is guaranteed. Thirdly, the cars are in much better condition, e.g. the paint or the headlights because of less sun, or the whole chassis, because of the better roads – I’m sure, 99% of the SUVs in Germany have never seen a campo track! Marketplace: What about the payment? Jürgen: The payment has to be made in advance to my bank account, after signing the buying and service contract. If you are paying from, for example, the UK, you can use our partner Currencies Direct and pay through them into my bank account. I don’t take cash. I keep the customer up to date about the status by email and they can call me any time. Whoever wants may have a copy of my passport as well. I have nothing to hide and I don’t want to rip anybody off. To those who only trust big companies: remember what happened in 2008! Marketplace: What should people do when they are interested in purchasing a car from you? Jürgen: Just go to the contact section on my website, www.autoagent.es, and send me an email with your idea of the car and specifications you are thinking about. I’ll call you back within 24 hours. Marketplace: What additional services do you offer? Jürgen: I can also offer a car insurance, for which I have negotiated a 20% discount for my customers. Marketplace: Thank you Jürgen. It certainly sounds as if you will make, what is an important decision for many people, a much simpler and less mystifying process.

Come & Enjoy

A

San Isidro in Nerja

s festival season gets well under way once again in Andalucia and the weather turns warm with bright, sunny, cloudless days, the Spanish people get excited about the prospect of forthcoming fiestas. Lets face it - no one can host a party like the Andalucians and one of the best and most delightful is the Romeria of San Isidro in Nerja. The festival is always held on the same date - the 15th May - and pays tribute to the patron saint of agricultural workers, Saint Isidore who was known for his generosity towards the poor and animals. The party kicks off on Sunday evening of the 14th at the area around the Nerja Caves with a big open air dance floor with plenty of music, drinking, food and dancing. On the 15th the town stages the main Romeria which is where a large procession of people, horses, floats etc. follow the oxen-driven figure of San Isidro from the Church on the Balcon de Europa right up to the entrance to the caves of Nerja. This takes a number of hours with spectators and revellers all lining the streets to capture photos of the spectacle. The local people of Nerja don their finest traditional flamenco outfits (Flamenco Dresses for the ladies and suits with waistcoats and wide rimmed Cordoba Hats for the men and young boys) and the men jump on horseback with the ladies seated sidesaddle on the back. Bars and restaurants sponsor the various floats in the procession which are often pulled by mules or donkeys, (keeping with the agricultural theme) although these days there seem to be a number of tractors included too. Each year the atmosphere is one of fun and laughter where everyone seems to be relaxed and people really let their hair down for a good celebration. Want to get involved and be on one of the floats? Box Nerja in the Poligono Castillo Alto have a float this year that will be 10 metres in length, with beer, food and music. You can book your place with them for 30 euros a head. You do not have to be part of their gym to join up, just go along and book your place asap! Once the figure of San Isidro has been transported to the caves the party, as you can imagine, continues again up at the caves! So get your gladrags on and join in with this fun filled, crazy Spanish fiesta - one of the biggest parties of the year! Photos from Marketplace archives and provided by Chris Wood - thank you

It is a time for you to find new ways to build greater financial opportunities and financial connections. This is also a good time to make a positive first impression for a job interview or meeting. It’s a good time for rethinking and revising educational and travel plans or goals. The focus can also be on cultivating and nourishing your inner foundations that support you and your growth.

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)

Setting realistic financial goals, as well as formulating budgets and other sensible financial planning projects, will be favoured during this time. It is also a wonderful time for taking moments to pleasure yourself through earthy, tactile, and comforting endeavours. You may particularly value the aesthetics in and around your home. It’s a great time to pick up information from your environment and the people in it.

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

It’s a good time to develop new business plans and goals, a sense of renewal and reinvigoration with regards to your career goals is a potential. Your comfort zones matter, and now is the time to take care of your own needs without eclipsing the needs of others. Goals for self-mastery and self-discipline should be made at this time. It’s time to put your best foot forward.

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

Discovering ways to increase your income is featured. Pour your energy into your work and your finances, and you might just be able to take your ideas to the bank. Extravagance with your pocketbook is something you may want to look out for, however. You would have a sense of enthusiasm with regards to your ability to express yourself spontaneously and creatively.

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

Your energy levels can fluctuate day-to-day, and much depends on your emotional state of mind. Frequent periods of quiet and solitude are necessary in order to recharge your energies. Some may experience insomnia during this phase, especially if they are not allowing themselves the chance to recoup. You need to mark this period by a desire to sort things out, but also to be useful. 28 THE MARKET PLACE

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

It’s time to balance your life with some down time during month end - otherwise, you simply don’t feel whole.

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

This is the time when personal finances and possessions receive maximum attention. You are more inclined to dig your heels in and hang on to what makes you feel most secure than to take big risks. This is a time to do what you can to build trust in your family life and a strong foundation within yourself, so that you have a secure place to return to.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

This is a cycle in which you seek a higher meaning to your life, and seek out new experiences that take you beyond the mundane details of day-to-day life. Anything that broadens your experiences attracts now. You may be drawn into some form of service that will bring deep personal satisfaction. You need the energies and support of other people, and they also are drawing upon you a great deal.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

Your humanitarian impulse may be stimulated. You will need to concentrate on truly listening to those close to you, and on playing a supportive role. You seem to be open to working with others especially if it helps you to grow financial or personally. Some stresses and strains are likely now, mainly revolving around work and down time matters, and striking a balance between the two.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

This is a time when you can be brave and enjoy new experiences. Your mind is especially inquisitive during this cycle, when learning, short trips, and other forms of communication and making connections, appeal strongly. You may find yourself in a position in which there is a blending of financial matters with social or public affairs. This is a stable month for love matters and close relationships.

Could your body clock be making you eat twice as much food?

Expert backed ways to fight Hayfever

Being in a full-time, committed relationship with your snooze button might be making you eat more, says a study out of the Obesity Society journal. It turns out that morning people make better food choices, which is a pretty compelling reason to swap your morning doze for an early breakfast. Researchers followed 2,000 people and found that on average night owls ate twice as much as early birds and were more likely to opt for sugar-rich, fatty options and consume less protein. The study also found that night owls slept worse and did less exercise overall – making evening people more susceptible to obesity, diabetes and heart disease – just another reason to get your butt out of bed. The benefits of being an early riser include: choosing a more nutrient-dense breakfast, eating earlier in the day and exercising more. Royal British Legion - Nerja Branch

As ever our committee members have been working hard to promote the cause of the Royal British Legion. It seems that since our troops left Afghanistan and are no longer front page news our events are suffering from general malaise. Our Spring Fair was a complete failure unlike previous years and will almost certainly not be held again. It is always a big disappointment for the people who give so willingly their time and effort. So it is to them and the few people who did turn up that I say Thank You. In spite of the sparse numbers we did raise over 300 euros. Residents day went better and again thanks to the efforts of the indomitable committee members and friends we raised over 350 euros. It all adds up and 36 THE MARKET PLACE

will boost the donation we send later in the year to the Legion. In case anyone is still unsure of what we do, I will repeat that the function of the Legion is to provide support for any Service personnel who are injured during service whether in conflict or not,and to help the families of those who paid the ultimate price. We do not condone war or glorify it, we merely try to support those brave men and women who protect our freedoms and way of life. Our monthly lunches at the Al Andalus hotel in Maro and in La Herradura are open to anyone who is interested. You don’t have to be ex-service or serving. You don’t have to be British. We are happy to see new faces and extend a welcome to anyone who would like to join us. These are informal lunches and an opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones. The details are given below. If you would like to come along give Vera a call and discuss things or call Dave for information on the Legion and the work it does. Our Branch has a particular interest in the work of the Recovery Centre in Edinburgh which we sponsor and in June we will be happy to hear from Major Del Hamilton

about the centre and how it is helping those who have suffered injury, or illness while serving. With him will be a young veteran who will tell us of his experiences and what part the centre played in his recovery. Again I extend an invitation to anyone who would like to join us…..please do. I am sure you won’t regret it. A healthy habit shift: Drink more water

Drinking enough water throughout the day can be difficult to achieve for many reasons. One of the key messages of Nutrition Month in April was creating healthy shifts in habits at home - if you feel like your water intake could use a boost, increasing water intake for the whole family is one healthy shift you can focus on prioritising this month.

W

hen starting a new habit, at first it's important to consider the consequences if you aren’t able to accomplish your goal. What happens if you don’t drink enough water? Dehydration, especially while exercising, can result in headache, weakness, dizziness, dry mouth and exhaustion. Even when slightly dehydrated, your body starts to feel the consequences. After a few weeks, the focus of creating a new healthy habit shifts toward rewards from accomplishing your goal. It’s important to

drink water to maintain balance of fluids in the body, energize muscles, moisten tissues, keep skin healthy, regulate body temperature and maintain kidney and bowel function. Your body goes from feeling

just OK to feeling great when fully hydrated day in and day out. You’re simply able to more properly function. Studies suggest it takes 21 days to create a habit but, bottom line, bad habits can always come back, so think “long-term lifestyle change” instead of “short-term fix” by incorporating more water intake into your daily routine. How much water you need depends 42 THE MARKET PLACE

on your gender, age, size and activity level, so for starters drink enough to maintain a pale urine color.

Here are a few tips to get you started with better hydration habits: Drink a large glass of water as part of the morning routine. Make it

something you do with breakfast or after brushing your teeth. Warm, cold, with or without lemon, however you enjoy it most.

Pack a water bottle. Having water on hand makes it easier to increase intake because it’s a constant reminder and easy access. Remember to fill it up a few times throughout the day, especially after meals. Serve water with dinner. Having a jug at the table is a good idea so refills

are easy and encouraged.

Opt for water over alcohol. Women should limit themselves to one

alcoholic drink per day, while men should limit consumption to two drinks per day. If you have more than one alcoholic beverage, have water after your first drink. You could also try sparkling water with a slice of citrus, cucumber or mint-infused water instead of another drink.

Incorporate other liquids such as milk, which provides 8 grams of protein per cup plus calcium, phosphorus, riboflavin and vitamin D. It’s a great way to add additional calories, carbs and protein after exercise or if calorie needs are increased. Eat more fruit, which is naturally high in both water and sugar. Eating

whole fruits (and vegetables) are recommended over drinking juice because the fibre aids in digestion and is linked to reduced risk of many chronic diseases. Limit 100% fruit juice - with no added sugar - to 120ml per day.

Local animal charities TAIL (Torrox Animal International League) It is pleasing to be able to record that adoptions from Tail are as high as they have ever been with numbers going to England, Holland and Germany but also to Finland and Sweden, and to greater numbers here in Andalucia than hitherto. Sadly as we have commented many times, no sooner have we created a space than it is filled by yet more rescued dogs. As I write this we are still reflecting upon a rescue undertaken by Tail and APA Nerja and few other dedicated volunteers the day previously. This involved removing 9 dogs from the most appalling conditions, together with sheep and a herd of goats (some of whom were dead) and one horse, all living on top of weeks worth of excrement and urine with no fresh water or food. This building was alongside a well used caril (track) not that far from the picture postcard village of Frigiliana, and makes one wonder why those who passed by did not make representations to the Municipal Police. The moment you stepped out of the car the stench hit you. The owner, who was there during this operation, had already apparently been fined and had been visited by the Junta’s area veterinary and denounced. Sometimes one could be forgiven for thinking that no laws existed with regard to animal care in our area but that is not the case. The Junta de Andalucia has an abundance of laws covering all aspects of ownership, care and control of animals some maybe slightly confusing or contradictory but they were enacted with the correct sentiments in mind. If, on occasion, it seems not to be the case it is not the fault of the lawmakers but the law enforcers.

A.P.A. Nerja In our Shelter now we have 42 dogs being cared for. All our dogs are vaccinated, micro chipped and have passports to comply with the law. This is a cost borne by APA Nerja and which stretches our fundraising to the limit along with our vet fees which are essential to keep our dogs in the best of health. We have all shapes and sizes, personalities and stories at the Shelter. This is run purely by volunteers who work tirelessly to care and socialise the dogs by walking and teaching them how to integrate into society. Some of our dogs also benefit from doggie training school at Canis Connection which they love. If we are going to be able to continue to help the dogs still at risk in the area, then we need to be able to place our dogs into their forever homes or go to foster parents who will

CAS Shop News What better way to help the Costa Animal Society (CAS) than to help yourself. All clothing with pink tickets are half price for the month of May! The newly re-located shop is situated at No. 2 calle Castilla Perez in Nerja, next door to Good Stuff Café. Opening hours are from 10.00am until 2.00pm, Monday to Saturday, excluding bank holidays. The telephone number is 689 314 350. Please note: the CAS shop will be closed on Monday 1 (May Day) and Monday 15 (Romeria de San Isidro).

Could you help CAS? Betty This leaves Benji and Betty at Seacrest Kennels. They can be a bit shy around new people but each one is a very sweet and cuddly youngster who would make a lovely addition to any family. Another set of pups that were rescued from the pound this past spring are Adam, Agatha and Aurora. Despite lots of interest from our Nordic sister charities and Adam being provisionally reserved by a family in Norway, this trio is still looking for their forever homes. Unfortunately, the waifs from the recent puppy season are still occupying many of the spots in kennels which CAS uses to take in new rescues. It is always a difficult balancing act as more urgent cases are brought to our attention. The only way to make room for new rescues is for CAS to find either foster places or permanent homes for the puppies in kennels. Please contact us if you would like to adopt or become a fosterer. To meet any of our rescue pups, or perhaps one of our adult dogs, contact Kurt or Laura at Seacrest on 95 252 1426 or e-mail at hotelparaperros.nerja@gmail.com. Last minute: Additionally, four other puppies, Scrappy, Munch, Brownie and Spot were abandoned and taken in by CAS. They are four months old, very sweet and playful and get on well with other dogs.

The Costa Animal Society is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas, so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact! In particular, more fundraisers are needed to work with our team, people are required to help with the feeding of the cats at the numerous feeding stations maintained by CAS, and animal lovers who could undertake a monthly airport run are necessary to take animals being re-homed in northern Europe to catch their flights. In addition, fosterers are always required to take short-term care of animals until a permanent home can be found for them. Even if you are only here for few months a year, CAS would appreciate your help. For a no-obligation chat, contact Vera on 95 252 9670 for general enquiries. Simone on 619 903 815 can answer queries about airport runs in English or German. And despite the tough times, money is still needed to cope with the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. If you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful. THE MARKET PLACE 51

Nerja

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

La Herradura

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
