The best start to the year in 8 years!
SALES Whether the trend continues remains to be seen but the first quarter of 2015 for property sales accepted, exchanged or completed have been the best since 2007 at the Team Group. Doubtless other agents will be saying the same, Spanish house prices rose 1.8 per cent in 2014, the first annual increase since 2007, according to the Official House Price Index published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). In our case quarter one benefited from the momentum gained in the last quarter of 2014. This stacks up with the official figures, according to the Ministerio de Fomento Q4 2014 was the busiest quarter since available records began for completions of resale properties in Nerja with 182 transactions, the next busiest 4th quarter was in 2005 with 172 transactions.
proven by the closing gap between offers and asking prices. In 2014, on average we expected to close a sale at around 10% to12% below asking, the first 3 months of the year have since offers accepted well within 10% of asking. Assuming no major political or financial calamities I think there is a reasonable chance that values might start to move by the end of the year. We have also seen an increase in the higher value end of the market with offers accepted at between 500,000 and 900,000, all very encouraging.
The strength of the pound against the euro has been both good and bad. Good in that it is encouraging UK buyers to enter the market, many for the first time and bad for those UK vendors who have seen the value of the euro fall considerably between offer acceptance and completion. In some cases vendors are choosing to negotiate a euro/ pound exchange rate to attempt to mitigate their currency In 2014 there were 509 resale transactions completed in loss or holding their euros here until such time the euro Nerja compared with 364 in 2013, a massive 40% increase. might strengthen. Since 2008 until late 2013 we had more reduced of this year, there is still some way to go. Home & Property News Home & Property News Rising mortgages can raise the price of housing in 2015 say Moody’s
There is also an increase in demand for office space by large enterprises and high volume transactions are already reporting price increases. Developers are still cautious about starting new developments due to the amount of obsolete stock.
Living in a rented flat with pets? The credit rating agency Moody’s believes that rising mortgages in Spain could reinforce the Spanish property market recovery in 2015 and consequently raise housing prices. Moody’s analyst and author of the text, Conde Rodrigo Puentes emphasized that historically there has always been a positive correlation between the generation of mortgages and changes in housing prices. “In our opinion, increases in loans is likely to move house prices higher this year,” The report highlights that financial institutions have competed actively in the first quarter of 2015 to offer interest rates near the level of the mortgage crisis price. Rising mortgages help alleviate declines in housing prices if accompanied by good economic conditions, low interest rates and fewer foreclosures. However, the recovery of house prices in Spain will be uneven, as coastal areas have a higher stock of unsold homes. The number of these new unsold homes will prevent further and faster recovery rates. Moody’s also notes that some smaller loans and low interest rates have improved the ratio of debt to income of potential buyers, which has increased the number of citizens that banks would grant a mortgage to. But on the other hand they warn that the increase in demand and the creation of mortgages will also depend on interest rates remaining low.
Dogs, cats birds, fish... there are many pets with whom you can share your life, but what is the situation in a rented flat? The Law Does the owner of the rented flat allow you to keep an animal in the property? According to the Urban Leases Act, the landlord can prohibit the ownership of animals in their rented home.
Keys to a functional kitchen Distributing the workspace depends on the space available and the location of radiators, windows and doors. The placement of furniture, appliances and cupboards will vary but you should think about how you will work in the kitchen and what things need to be nearest to get the job done efficiently. Making the kitchen a comfortable and practical space, whatever the parameters available is important. It's imperative to maximise the workspace and storage in order to perform daily tasks with ease no matter how small the kitchen, so that one can move and cook with ease. You'll need to take into account these four factors:
1) Get a Bright Space
10 THE MARKET PLACE
3) Choose the perfect furniture and appliances Make sure the furniture and appliances meet the needs of the inhabitants of the house. If you do not have much space, compact, light, multifunctional and light coloured items will be chosen. If space is no problem you can opt for practical items such as large appliances or islands. Think also about appliances that save time and money.
4) Take Advantage of Accessories
Investments in real estate will continue in 2015, say Tins
The investment volume in the Spanish property market will remain at least at 2014 levels, with a profile of greater risk taking by investors, according to the latest Property Barometer IPD-Tins. Tins notes that the residential sector with a view to renting is still slower because of low profitability, management difficulties and reputational risk, although 16% of panelists acknowledged interest in developing assets, which did not happen in previous editions. Investors are also open to take more risks.
So, if you are a tenant and you are considering a pet, you should ask your landlord first. Having a pet without permission is reason for the landlord to terminate the contract. Size does Matter! It would be wrong to put a large animal, that requires a lot of space to run, in a small flat. The Tenant Owner Communication Communication between landlord and tenant is fundamental. If you already live in a rented apartment and plan to have a pet, talk to the owner; it is more likely that there is no problem. If you are looking for a flat to rent and you have an animal, you must make it clear from the beginning. It is best to show that the pet is harmless, well educated and clean. The Owner If you are the landlord of the property, you must forget the idea that all animals will destroy the house or furniture. If the animal is well educated it can be a perfect tenant.
Lighting is especially relevant in a kitchen because it allows you to perform tasks comfortably and it is needed to help expand the visual space. Natural light must be enhanced via windows and doors. The use of colour also affects the feeling of spaciousness. Light or neutral tones and some bright tones such as yellow or orange will enhance the brightness. Lacquered furniture or clear or bright coatings will also help.
2) Distribute the Workspace Optimally
There are plenty of accessories on the market to turn your kitchen into a very practical space. Clever storage solutions help maintain order in the kitchen. Look for things that also keep your kitchen clear of clutter, comfortable and allow good movement to bend and stretch for things in cupboards. Choose pieces of furniture that fit the need in the kitchen to achieve a comfortable but practical space.

Spanish Law and "The Customs of the Pueblo" There are no police in Cútar so you had better get on with your neighbours. Cútar can’t afford a policeman, so it will be your neighbours and their neighbours who will say what goes and what doesn’t go, who’s in the right and who is in the wrong and whether or not you are a nice person. Offend one person and you may have offended an entire village if they all happen to be related.
I
t’s not that village people here reject law – quite the reverse, it’s that they are law-abiding by instinct. Just try pushing in when there’s a queue. Of course it never looks as though there is a queue. It looks like a mob, but every single person in it knows their place. This is because each new arrival instinctively asks “cual es el última?” Who was the last one to arrive? Law abiding foreigners don’t often get that. There are two sorts of law in Spain. There is official law, which includes regional (Andalucian) law, the law of Spain and Euro law and we all know what that’s like. Then there is “El costumbre del Pueblo”, or “How we do things here”. The problem with official Andalucian/Spanish/European Law is that there is so much of it. The law-abiding citizen would be wise to avoid it as far as possible and keep his head down. A Spanish solicitor once advised me never to offer information to the authorities if they hadn’t actually asked for it because “it would make them suspicious”. A Spanish Guardia policeman once told me that he could almost certainly find me in breach of the law if he just looked hard enough. He wasn’t threatening me, just chatting. If you want to go fishing for example there are five licences – freshwater, freshwater with trout, beach fishing, boat fishing and boat fishing in a group. You have to take a course, pass an exam and get public liability insurance. The laws are made by the Andalucian environment agency who see no difference in public safety between fishing for minnows with a bobble float and blowing wild boar apart with a double-barreled shotgun. Locals advise you to ignore the fishing laws, and in many places there is simply no one to enforce this maze of regulation. In fact, in many areas of everyday life it soon becomes apparent that if you obeyed every regulation you would never do anything. European legislation requiring domestic dogs and cats to be chipped, for example, is entirely ignored. People here in the white villages haven’t even got round to neutering their pets, let alone chipping them. The Town Hall pins up a notice, and people simply don’t admit to owning a cat or a dog. They say they just feed them, put a roof over their heads and take them for walks. The Town Hall doesn’t mind. No one can say it didn’t do its bit. Then there’s the village shop. It has a bench outside. Sometimes a couple of old men with a can of beer sit on it. The “official” law requires it to have a bar licence and an off licence as well as a grocers licence. But who is going to enforce all these laws? It’s cheap to write laws but expensive to enforce them and villages have better things to do with their cash than spend it on officials with clipboards. This sort of thing used to drive my old Dad mad. He
was for ever complaining that the “Continentals” (actually he meant the French) said one thing and did another and this is quite true, they do. Take the European directive on straight bananas. Actually we all know (don’t we?) that there was never any such directive. This was just a fantasy headline from the Daily Mail trying to trick the public into buying it’s arse-rag of a newspaper. But suppose it had been true? Well, someone here would have put up a notice and we would all have got on with our lives, straight bananas not withstanding. This is different from the UK, which would have set up straight banana eradication targets, a committee, prosecuted those caught on CCTV eating a straight banana and run straight banana detection vans.
To fish in Lake Vinuela you have to enrol on a course, pass an exam, buy public liability insurance, pay a rod licence fee, join the Vinuela fishing club and pay them. Trout not included.
12 THE MARKET PLACE
When I say “Spanish Law” I am talking of course about everyday law – those domestic regulations that needle us all on a daily basis. I don’t mean burglary, assault and so on. These are serious crimes that call for a serious response and fortunately for us Spain has every imaginable sort of policeman to deal with them. There are local ones, national ones and the Guardia Civil who used to be Franco’s bully boys and now do the traffic. In Almachar you can see the biggest Guardia police station in the Axarquia. It was a garrison used to house the police and their families in the post Civil War days when this was called “Bandit country”. Every year or so they will stroll through Cútar village with their mirror sunglasses, gelled hair, automatic weaponry and handcuff and truncheon set. On the doors and bonnet of their cars is the symbol of the tied rods and axe. This used to be the emblem of the Roman Centurion and was coined by Benito Mussolini when he became the father of Fascism in 1919. So local people have mixed feelings about the Guardia. You wouldn’t necessarily go and ask one the time. Of course they no longer bully people just because they suspect you of something. But that isn’t because they don’t want to. In fact all sorts of authority is mistrusted here. The police because historically they have not shown themselves to be on the side of ordinary people, the legislators in Madrid because Madrid is a long way away and Andalucia views Madrid more or less as Scotland views London. continued on page 14

So the Costumbre del Pueblo is the way neighbours solve problems. This avoids and sometime evades formal law, which is always operated by expensive third party “experts” – lawyers, solicitors, the local and regional authorities and the police. Spanish law recognises the “customs of the village” and will often have a coda that says “So long as nothing in this statute contradicts local customs”. These codas are especially strong in matters such as marriage and land disputes. So the first principle of the Custom of the village is to Live and let Live. In other words, so long as your neighbour isn’t hurting you or anyone else, don’t shop them to the authorities. Endless petty land disputes that often break into tit for tat vandalism, noise pollution, use and abuse of animals, building development without permission, parking disputes, cleaning disputes, responsibility disputes are all best solved informally. Live and let live is an ancient and special thing that village neighbours can give each other and town neighbours cannot. The second principle is “Deal with your neighbour”. Yesterday my neighbour’s dog slaughtered my flock of guinea fowl. I had five that I’ve raised for a year and they were about to breed. It was my duty to bring this matter to my neighbour’s attention so I did. My neighbour, who happens to be the Mayor behaved impeccably. He apologised, gave me a rather badly fried almond from the large bowl of nuts he was eating and a small Aspidistra, which I didn’t really want because we have Aspidistras coming out of our ears. More importantly, he wired bits of old bed head and scrap chipboard all over his patio wall “to keep the dog in”. It didn’t, but it did convince observers that he was making every effort to respond to my complaint. In my experience neighbours always respond to a reasonable complaint. No money changed hands. It would not have been costumbre. The third principle is “Only get outside help as an absolute last resort”. When we first came here someone pinched our wheel barrow. I was going to report it to the police. The neighbours were aghast “It's kids” they said by way of explanation. So I did nothing and somebody’s rusty and battered barrow appeared outside our door a few days later by way of compensation. We duly found our new one down a ravine minus its wheel, which was no doubt on someone’s Go-Kart. What would I have looked like as the Guardia hauled away two children in chains? And they would have done – what’s the point of having chains if you don’t use them? And the final and most important principle of the Costumbre del Pueblo is that “You can never win, so stop trying! ” Think about it. To bring a “village” action against your neighbour you first have to “denounce” him. This isn’t as bad as it sounds. Denunnciar means to report. So. You might lose the action, which would be the best outcome. But suppose you win and the entire village knows you have done their brother/father/ uncle/cousin/second cousin once removed in the eye? They will make you wish you’d lost even when you haven’t!

Registering your vehicle in Spain
Spanish license plates and registration document. Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ. eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for
16 THE MARKET PLACE
161
an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40E for petrol-engine cars and 56E for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you.

First Driving Impressions – Morris Mini Moke The Mini Moke is a vehicle based on the Mini, designed for the British Motor Corporation (BMC) by Sir Alec Issigonis. The initial design prototype was for a light military vehicle similar in style to the American Jeep.
B
ut due to the Moke’s small wheels and low ground clearance made it impractical as an off-road vehicle. In fact, there are many stories of the military carrying the Moke across rough terrain, instead of the Moke taking them! Assembly started in the UK at Longbridge in 1964 and ended in late 1968, but production continued in other countries right up until 1993. Other countries included: Portugal, Australia and Rhodesia. After its initial failure as a military vehicle, BMC achieved success as a “Beach Buggy” and became a cult vehicle in the Algarve, Australia, the United States and many tropical resorts in the Caribbean. The first Mokes were only built at BMC’s Longbridge in 1964 and production was carried on there until 1968, with 14,518 being built. There were 26,000 built in Australia between 1966 and 1981 and 10,000 in Portugal between 1980 and 1993; sadly very few now exist in the UK. It is much easier to list what the Mini Moke actually has, rather than what it doesn’t have. It does have an engine, body, 4 wheels, gearbox, steering wheel, seats, speedometer, fuel gauge, two sub-frames, battery, electrics, fuel tank, and that’s about it. It does not have Sat Nav, or even a radio… or air conditioning, carpets, power steering, ABS, a cigarette lighter, airbags, seatbelts, windows or doors. To say it is basic is an understatement. All the things you would expect today on a modern car are just not included in the Moke. To get in, you have to put one foot over the metal body frame, commonly known as the “pontoons” or “side boxes” running between the front and rear wheels. Once in, you sit on fairly hard and basic seats that do not recline, but are fixed firmly in place. It is not the most comfortable car to sit in and travel long distances in. This particular car was built in 1968, so is 46 years old, and looks like brand new, it has covered only 50,000 miles and drives like it did when new. It “crunches” into 1st gear, as it doesn’t have synchromesh on 1st gear. It occasionally jumps out of 2nd gear
18 THE MARKET PLACE
on “over-run” but I can remember all Minis doing this when they were new. It was originally fitted with an 850cc petrol engine, but had a new 998cc engine fitted in 1985, and this is coupled to a four speed manual gearbox. I have always wanted to drive a Moke since I was a teenager, and it has taken all these years to achieve my ambition. There is something special about this basic of basic cars, something very nostalgic driving it. The Moke is tiny in comparison to modern cars, measuring only 2,020mm, or 79.5 inches so parking it is not a problem. Top speed is around 50 mph, but it is happier cruising at 45 mph, so the chance of getting caught for speeding on the motorway is nil, even through the many roadworks we have to endure these days on our motorway network. The canvas roof goes up and down very easily and it folds away nice and neatly behind the rear seats. It is amazing just how little wind is present in the car when you are moving, the wind and cold seems to stay on the outside of the car, so even in the cold days of winter you remain fairly warm, and are not blown or buffeted around. i don’t know how it works, but it does, and I’m sure it wasn’t designed to do that, probably more to do with luck. The Moke is essentially based on the Mini van, sharing many common parts, and even today getting spare parts and accessories to keep them on the road are easy to find, and cheap to buy. The word Moke is an archaic dialect term for donkey, but I’m sure even the smallest of donkey could carry more than the Moke, and go places the Moke could only dream of going. The cost new back in the 1960’s was around £450, but today, all those years later, the Moke has become a classic car, and attracts strong money. Just recently a French registered, LHD Green Moke with low mileage made 23,000 euro (about £18,300) at auction in France, and I guess values will continue to rise as the classic car market continues to attract more interest as it has done throughout 2014. The Mini Moke is a very basic car, but great fun to drive, and it attracts so much attention. Some people asked if golf buggy’s were actually allowed on the road, others asked if it was Fred Flintstones car, and I got a few “Yabba-Dabba-Doo’s” hurled at me. But the majority looked at it admirably, and wouldn’t mind having a go driving the Moke, rather than being in their mundane modern day hatchbacks. The Moke is a fair weather car, and not ideal for the winter months, but whatever the weather it is just a pleasure to drive and really puts a smile on your face - and quite often others around you too.

Top three things to consider when buying a TV When considering buying a TV, most people only think of two factors; size and cost. To get a TV that is worth your money, you must look at other important aspects. The level of complexity that is compounded by the ever changing technology makes it hard to differentiate a great TV from a poor one; to the eye, they all look the same.
H
ere are some of the important aspects you should consider before buying a TV.
Finance: When it comes to buying the TV you may have to consider a tv on finance option. Many online stores now allow you to buy now and pay later or spread the cost over several months. Some even allow you up to 12 months interest free credit.
OLED TVs feature one of the latest technologies to offer a more superior picture quality though they still get affected with glare.
Display type:
Inputs:
The different display types available include LCD, LED, OLED, and plasma. Plasma display is ideal for relatively big TVs as they tend to have higher contrast ratio and excellent color quality. The problem with plasma TVs is low brightness which makes them prone to ambient light. LCD TVs are cheap and are more energy efficient than plasmas however, they have limited viewing angles. LED TVs are just LCD TVs that uses LEDs as a backlight and are more energy efficient compared to LCD TVs.
Colour Depth: This is the ability of the TV to reproduce more realistic images that are satisfying to the human eye. For a real bargain-priced TV, the bit depth should be “8 bits per channel’’ or more. TVs with a low colour depth give images that look exaggerated.
Most TVs comes with most essential inputs such as the coaxial F connector. But if you are planning on watching HD content, you should always choose one with a HDMI input. The higher the number of inputs, the better as you get many options to choose from. You can even enjoy old school movies from your old video recorder. HDCP input technology allows you to watch content from Blu-ray players.
Manufacturer: A TV can range in price massively depending solely on the brand name. Checking out customer reviews of the model you’re looking to buy is a great way of determining if your money is best spent elsewhere. There are a lot of new brands on the market offering TV’s for very cheap prices, however, the TV itself may only last a few months!
The Insurance T&C's you wish you'd seen Complaints about insurance are commonplace, but now buyers of gadget insurance may have more reason to complain than others.
T
he Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) recently stated that it had seen a doubling of the number of complaints about gadget insurance throughout 2014 – more notably, it found that approaching half of all claims turned down were incorrectly turned down. The FOS found that insurers had applied the terms of the contracts incorrectly 20 THE MARKET PLACE
to valid claims – that or, as the BBC reported, the terms were “so ambiguous it was hard to see how anyone could make a successful claim”.
The best gadget insurance – or is it? This prompted us to look at the best gadget insurance policies on the market and see if the terms were clear to us. Our review included Gadget Cover
Supercover, i-Digital Premier, Insure My Pocket Platinum, Insure My Mobile Phone Gold, Protect Your Bubble, Gadgetbuddy.com, Switched On Insurance, and Helpucover. How to tell if you have the best gadget insurance 1. 14 days… Many people are familiar with a “14 day cooling off period” from phone and broadband contracts – that is a period after purchase when you as a customer can cancel the contract with no penalty. Several of the top gadget policies reviewed contained a 14 day cooling off period but also a 14-day ‘exclusion period’. This stipulates that for 14 days after purchase, you cannot make a claim. It’s reasonable to expect you are covered from the moment you have bought your insurance, but here that may not be the case.
2. Travel Some travel insurance policies won’t cover you for high value electrical items (a select few will), so people naturally expect their gadget policy will. All of the top end policies sampled allowed a period of time abroad per year, but the lowest was only 30 days – 3 long holidays could put you close to that limit, and the strict wording we reviewed would then mean any claim (relating to the travel or not) could be denied.
3. Not all gadgets are created equal All policies reviewed had an age
restriction on the gadgets – the lowest required that the gadget had to be under 18 months old on the day you take the policy out. Some others required that the gadget were bought from a UK retailer, therefore excluding online auctions like eBay or foreign purchases brought back from holidays. Some also specified different excesses, depending on the gadget type insured.
4. Unattended? Some would say that if you leave your phone on the dash in your car window then you deserve what you get. Insurers would tend to agree as they commonly had a definition of “unattended” which might include leaving a gadget in a car, leaving it out of sight or even in one policy “beyond arm’s reach”. The terms may be more stringent than expected – in some policies reviewed, it was ambiguous over whether leaving your phone on a table with a friend was considered “unattended” or not.
5. Home Insurance for Gadgets Those who have been listening in their insurance classes will know that your boring old home insurance can include cover for mobiles and other gadgets as
named items. The cover can sometimes work out cheaper than buying gadget insurance separately – though you do need to take care to make sure you’re getting the same kind of cover, as most home insurance policies would require upgrade options to ensure you are covered for accidental damage and when taking your items out of your home. By contrast, these are standard features on many gadget policies. We hope this helps you in getting to grips with your gadget cover, demystifying some of the world of insurance and helping to navigate if you have a complaint!

The healthiest oils and how to use them Fats – get them right and you’ll help protect your heart, lower cholesterol and maintain good cognitive function. Get it wrong however and there could be trouble. ‘Bad’ fats are implicated in the development of everything from coronary heart disease to Alzheimer’s and depression. WHY WE NEED FAT Mediterranean eating is hailed as an example of the best in the world for longevity, partly due to consumption of good fats like olive oil. We need fat; it’s crucial to a number of bodily functions. It’s vital for our brains because it builds part of the myelin, the fatty sheath surrounding each nerve fibre which allows the brain to carry messages quickly. It also regulates the production of the sex hormones, helps the body use fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E and K and keeps skin looking and feeling healthy. “It’s important to get a wide range of fats,” explains Louise Digby, nutritional therapist at the Nutri Clinic. “Recent research suggests that having a mixture of oils in our diet is the most beneficial, as too much of any single fat can be detrimental to health.”
But there is no point having a cupboard full of healthy oils without knowing how to use them for maximum effect. Here are which ones to stock up on, and how to incorporate them into your culinary masterpieces…
BEST FOR COOKING AT MEDIUM TEMPERATUTES 1 Sesame oil USE IT FOR: Cooking, stir-frying and salad dressings. This oriental cupboard staple is bursting with nutrition and will impart a distinct nutty flavour to any dish. “This oil is not only high in cholesterol-lowering monounsaturated fatty acids, it also contains vitamin E, K and B6, plus the minerals magnesium, copper, calcium, iron and zinc,” says Louise.
2 Avocado oil USE IT FOR: Cooking, frying and salads. Avocado oil has similar anti-ageing properties to olive oil, but is slightly lower in saturated fat and milder in flavour. “Refined avocado oil is stable at high temperatures which makes it great for cooking,” explains Louise. “Plus it contains lots of mono-unsaturated fat which can reduce the build up of bad cholesterol.” 24 THE MARKET PLACE

4 Macadamia nut oil
BEST FOR COOKING AT HIGH TEMPERATURES:
USE IT FOR: Cooking, baking, frying, roasting and salads.
3 Coconut oil USE IT FOR: Cooking, frying and baking. This solidified substance has shot to fame in recent years and can count celebrities among its fans. Anecdotally it’s been said to benefit dementia sufferers – the fats in virgin coconut oil can be converted into ketone bodies which provide an energy source for the brain. Experts speculate this may provide alternative fuel to the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. But like any fat which is solid at room temperature, coconut oil is full of saturated fat, and that’s bad, isn’t it? “Although this oil is high in saturated fatty acids, they are shorter ones than are found in animal fats,” explains Louise. “They are taken to the liver and burnt for energy rather than to the cells where they could impair insulin function, like the saturated fat in animal products can.” So while experts still advise it’s only eaten in moderation, it seems this is one sat fat which isn’t all bad. Coconut is regarded as superior to olive oil due to its lower level of polyunsaturates and it’s twice as stable as its Mediterranean counterpart; olive oil will oxidise and produce rancid by-products when heated to very high temperatures, making it less suitable.
Not one for nut allergy sufferers, this nutritious oil offers an explosion of antioxidants, boasting four to five times the vitamin E of olive oil. “It’s low in polyunsaturated fatty acids which tend to be very unstable and release rancid by-products when heated,” says Louise. “This oil is particularly good for cooking because it’s twice as stable as olive oil.”
BEST FOR DRIZZLING 5 Flax seed oil USE IT FOR: Salads. Great for drizzling, this oil should never be used for cooking as it is very unstable at high temperatures and will produce rancid byproducts if heated. “Flaxseed oil provides a much-needed injection of omega 3 into your diet,” explains Louise. “Although the level is nowhere near as high as the omega 3 found in fish oil, flaxseed is the highest non-animal source available so is a great way for vegans and vegetarians to supplement their diets. Omegatype polyunsaturates such as those found in this oil have been discovered to be beneficial in more than 50 health conditions.”
6 Hemp seed oil USE IT FOR: Low temperature cooking and salads. Hemp has many a fan and this relatively recent addition to the health-oil cannon is reportedly beneficial for conditions such as eczema, asthma and arthritis. “Hemp seed oil is very high in poly-unsaturated fatty acids, which means it’s only suitable for really low temperature cooking as it will oxidise, but it’s great for drizzling and has a pleasant nutty flavour,” explains Louise. “Hemp’s fatty acids are mainly omega 6, but it does contain omega 3 too,” she says. There have also been promising results reported by parents of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
41 Club Nerja starts another year of fun and fellowship The photograph shows Ragnar Sandsten from Sweden handing over the Chairmanship of Nerja 41 Club (a Club for Ex Round Tablers from all over Europe) to Mike Proctor from England. Under Ragnar's leadership, the Club has enjoyed a superb year of fun which will be hard to follow. Mike has taken up the challenge by introducing some new events. Nerja 41 Club continues its search for former Round Tablers. Past members of the thousands of Round Tables throughout the world who are living East of Malaga full time or for part of the year are invited to join our local Ex Tablers Club, known as the East of Malaga or Nerja 41 Club. Mike Proctor has the privelege of Chairing Nerja 41 Club for 2015/2016. Our Club membership of 40+ members includes Ex Tablers from several North European Countries including Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Denmark and, of course, England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The vast majority of our members are non resident and are in Spain for only a short time every year although resident and non resident are naturally equally welcome! Our Club continues to thrive and celebrated its tenth birthday last year. Nerja 41 Club meets twice a month on the first and third Thursdays. On the first Thursday of the month we have our 'Munch Bunch' lunch when we go out with our ladies to sample 'menu del dia' in many of the different restaurants around our very large catchment area. Our meeting on the third Thursday is for the Club members at the hotel 'Al Andaluz', Maro which is very close to the Caves of Nerja, and on these evenings the ladies meet at the hotel followed by a meal in a nearby restaurant. Some of our Club evenings are shared with our ladies if we have a splendid speaker or special event and on other evenings the fun and fellowship of Round Table comes to the fore. We have many plans for the coming 41 Club year which will include a Ladies Night, a Burns Night as well as the Chairman's BBQ. THE MARKET PLACE 27
The Patios of Cordoba By Jessica Infantino Trumble
I was drawn to Córdoba by its architecture, but was charmed by its streets.
D
uring a 2 week trip to Spain, the Andalucían city was near the top of my list of places to visit, mainly because of its great Mosque-Cathedral – a site I’ve wanted to see in person for Photo obtained from the internet portal of the Town Hall of Córdoba years. The Mezquita (as it’s known in Spanish) certainly lived up to my high expectations, with its red and white striped arches even bolder and more impressive than I imagined. What I didn’t expect was just how much I would enjoy the neighbourhood around the Mezquita. Distinguished by its narrow winding streets, whitewashed buildings and decorative patios, the Jewish Quarter is the heart of Córdoba. You could spend an entire day here wandering through the maze of streets, visiting shops and restaurants and exploring every nook, cranny and dead end. While beautiful in form, the neighbourhood’s architecture also serves an important function, acting as a sort of natural air conditioner in the hot, dry climate. Residents would open their doors and windows and fill their central courtyards with fountains and vegetation – trees, flowers and other shrubbery – to help keep their homes cool. In the springtime, the white walls also provide a blank canvas for Córdoba’s colourful Fiesta de los Patios. Each May music, dance, food and the smell of flowers fill the streets as residents put their patios on display, opening their doors for the public to see the fruits of their labour. Like a modern-day parade of homes, the festival dates back to 1921 when the first patio decorating contest was held for a grand prize of 100 pesetas (1 euro = 166 pesetas, so about 60 cents). Today the first place prize has increased to a respectable 3,000 euros with more than 50 patios participating in this annual event. Rooted in tradition and a sense of community, the festival is such an “integral part of this city’s cultural heritage” that it was named a UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage Site in 2012 (the historic core of Córdoba is also a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site). It has become so popular that many residents have also begun decorating their patios at Christmas time for visitors to see. Even though we weren’t there in the spring or during the holidays it was still a treat to walk up one of Córdoba’s most famous streets Calleja de las Flores, lined with

bright blue hanging buckets filled with red geraniums. It was here our search for patios began, peeking through iron gates from the streets in search of hidden treasures.

It became something of a scavenger hunt to find the next one, and although light on flowers the patios were still captivating with beautiful fountains, plants, tile work and other ornamentation. One shop owner enthusiastically invited us into his store and led us to see his patio (complete with a water well) with the same warmth and pride that I imagine permeates the city during festival time. Looking back, Córdoba is like a Russian matryoshka doll with the Mezquita at its core and layer upon layer of Roman, Moorish and Spanish history as well as Islamic and Christian influence, each as fascinating as its centre. Regardless of the time of year you visit, you will not be disappointed.

Brits in Spain increasing in number Contrary to reports that the British community in Spain is shrinking rapidly, a new report indicates that it is expanding. The news comes in new data just published by the country’s Immigration Observatory on the makeup of its five million foreign residents at the end of 2014. The overall figure was down by over 183,500 people compared to 12 months earlier, but some nationalities posted increases, including Britons, who were up by 3.87 per cent to nearly 276,000.

Pop Star Shoots Video in Nerja
The body of a 25-year-old Polish tourist was recovered from the foot of cliffs on the coast in Nerja last month. He was reported to have fallen into a rocky area of the sea during the early hours when he was out with his girlfriend and another couple. Helicopters from the Guardia Civil and National Police were called in for the recovery operation which was complicated by strong winds. A specialist team was landed on El Salón beach, close to the Balcón de Europa, and officers made their way to the body which was found 300 metres away in an inaccessible area near the end of the paseo marítimo.
Discounts for Pensioners Nerja Council have drawn up an agreement with local businesses to offer discounts for pensioners living in Nerja with a pensioner's card. The aim of the initiative is to give older people an economic boost so that they can get involved in events and activities like education, sport and culture. All businesses in Nerja have been invited to be part of the scheme providing they can offer at least 5% discount for 2 years. Businesses seem enthusiastic about this idea and as soon as more details are known they will be published in a guidebook and distributed in town.

The Sun in your sign for the month, kicks off a new cycle in your life. In the meantime, you could feel quite emotional at times especially if there have been any pressures in your love life. Now you would have a great escape from the rigours of work for quite some time. Go out and enjoy the world, Aries. If you make a plan, you need to keep your word about it, or else your current popularity could soon melt away. People know you can be mercurial, that is fine, they accept that about you, but if you push things too far, it would not work out well. Yet someone can give you some no-nonsense advice for now, and that may be an Aquarian. You need to tune in, Gemini. You have high hopes in this month ahead to force back any obstacles, physical or those coming from outside of you and lead a more liberated lifestyle. But the expression 'freedom with responsibility' comes to mind, and one without the other simply is not sustainable. So do not be too rash in your moves, maybe it is a case of moving things a little rather than completely. All forms of agreements require extra vigilance over the next month. If you're somebody who tends to sort things out on the back of a handshake, your trust in human nature may be shaken. Your informality and easy-going approach can often cultivate brilliant results, but not everyone has the same outlook. Hence be cautious of your moves for the month. During this month, you would be changing your mind often according to the whims and fancies of life. Yours is a Mutable sign, and one of the ingredients of this is a tendency to ebb and flow. Things can be fluid socially for the month, you may even invite friends around. Yet soon you may encounter someone who is equally changeable. Your lucky period of much income and better finances is just round the corner. But something you have tried, and tried to succeed with, may do so yet, but may require one final big push of energy. Get to it, yet do ensure that all the paperwork is right. Make sure that you put the finances into proper channels. They might help you during the rainy days ahead in life, Aquarius.

However much of a fun or a sociable time you have had recently, there has been a growing realization in the back of your mind, that some more serious issues need tackling. If you have been putting things off, it may be less easy to do so now. Yet what you can do is use one new and important friend as a sounding post. Their support can be invaluable.
The balance of power in certain associations of yours has definitely been shifting and this process has reached its crescendo for the month. But it has reached a crucial stage in one relationship, business or personal, and something has to give. Whether you're asserting yourself more or someone is asserting themselves to you, only you can say. Whatever you need to do or achieve now, it is going to be a whole lot easier if you can do this in a co-operative way, rather than forcing things. This would be especially true if shared money is concerned, perhaps after a big relationship has ended. Try to keep the distance as it will be easier this way. Even if someone is hostile, be calm for the month Virgo.
Scorpio
The past period would have cause worn-out of your energy levels, and you may be conscious of this now due to the extra stressful vibes the planets have poured into your sector of health over the last few weeks. Well, even your nervous system is in for a major breakdown.
Capricorn
You may want to buy a few nick-nacks for your home for the period. If you have an interest in arts, this may see you buying some art or soft furnishings. Yet if your interest lays more then you are in for a major shopping spree, Capricorn. Music and other artistic inclinations would surely draw you nearer in this month.

An offer can be made with a tempting idea involved, during this month. But is this really what you want to have in life? With jobs short on the ground, you may find yourself with a dilemma. Do you snap up this opportunity, even though it is not really what you would like to do, or are you hard headed and think you have little choice. Other news you receive may help your decision.

THE MARKET PLACE 43
Film and Tapas Evening at FTK, Nerja The present season of “Film & Tapas Evenings” comes to an end until the autumn at FTK’s Nerja premises in Pasaje San Miguel (near the main Mercadona) on Friday 8th May at 7:30 pm with “To Save a Life.” Everyone is welcome. Ever wondered what this generation’s teenage life is like through their eyes? “To Save a Life” jumps straight into the life of the average 21st century teen very authentically. With noble aims, it tries to address and help practically everything teens in this world have to deal with: suicide, bullying, cutting, drinking, drugs, parental pressure, premarital sex, fear of failure, dating, parents’ divorce, hypocrisy, teen pregnancy, bad-influence friends, loneliness, self-worth, peer pressure, school violence, pressure to succeed, abortion, college stress, rejection. With so many subplots and themes, this film could easily have made a better TV series than some daytime dramas. Though our main character is the “popular guy”, this film reveals what is really going on underneath all the superficialities of a teenager’s life, reminds us that life is precious and that the will to live can die, indeed is dying at early ages. It seeks to answer the question every teen is asking “What’s the point?” and endeavours to show that a decision must be made if you ever want to make it to adulthood. It shows that with age also comes responsibility not just independence. His search for meaning and purpose leads him to be more and more interested in what a certain youth pastor has to say, and with this he challenges the rest of the youth group on their hypocrisy. As our main character, Jake, struggles to figure out what is most important, he must ask, if you could save a life, what would you give? Could he really let go of popularity on the slight chance he may save a life? Or is popularity and a good girlfriend, everything any teenage boy could want, too high a price for a maybe? It is loosely based on the song “To Save a Life” by The Fray, and opens with the scene that will forever change Jake’s life, the public suicide of his childhood best friend. Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend, Somewhere along in the bitterness, And
The Royal British Legion, Nerja Branch
I would have stayed up with you all night, Had I known how to save a life. (Lyrics from “To Save a Life” by The Fray) Do join us for a film that speaks authentically about my generation to any generation that wants to understand us. More details from info@ftk-spain.net or 952 969 058 Esther Thomas

Five ingredients that poison your brain
There is no shortage of things driving us crazy today but there are things that can do it in a shorter amount of time. Gluten is a sticky protein that can cause digestive and immune system disorders. Celiac disease is the most common condition associated with gluten sensitivity but there is also a non celiac gluten sensitivity which is a major factor in inflammatory brain and nervous disorders. Artificial Sweeteners also have been poisoning our brains for decades. Aspartame is a chemical which when broken down is a powerful brain tumor causing chemical. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a form of salt added to foods to enhance flavour. It triggers the brain to think that the food tastes delicious and the brain produces lots of dopamine, the problem is MSG has been linked to neurological diseases like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and Dementia. Refined sugar in our food has also been linked to having a negative effect on our brain. Refined sugar suppresses important growth hormones for the brain. Finally adding fluoride to our drinking water has also had a widespread effect on our mental health. The Fluoride Action Network reported a study which found that it was linked to lower IQ levels. These five ingredients can be relatively easy to avoid, with the right motivation and knowledge.
Chromium - a Powerful Mineral for your Health Chromium is simply not a mineral that gets very much media coverage. Most people in the general public may have heard of it but are simply not aware of what is does or why it is so important for a healthy body in the way they understand about iron or calcium. However, chromium is incredibly important for the general health, even though the body only needs it in very small amounts. And the problem is that with the current, nutrient-poor diet that comes from an overdependence on processed or convenience foods, most people do not get enough. Normalizes Blood Sugar One of the reasons that chromium has begun to get more attention in the larger press is that several studies have shown that it can help those struggling with diabetes to manage their blood sugar levels. Adequate levels of chromium in the body make the digestive system more efficient at breaking down carbohydrates into glucose, thus requiring less insulin from an overworked pancreas. Builds Muscles Contrary to popular belief, protein is not the only thing the body needs to build muscles. Because of the way the chromium effects the digestive system and makes it more efficient with its use of carbohydrates, muscle building actually becomes easier. The body also becomes more efficient at using carbohydrates after a workout for energy. On the other hand, poor controlled blood sugars and insulin levels that are out of whack can lead to less efficient workout. This is why so many body-building sites promote the use of chromium supplementation. Lowers Blood Pressure It’s a little known fact that when the blood sugar is elevated, the blood pressure can be elevated, too. If this becomes a chronic condition, both high blood sugars and high blood pressure are potentially damaging to the heart and can increase the risk of heart disease. Thus adequate chromium levels are, indirectly, good for blood pressure and heart health as well. Eating chromiumrich foods like nuts, seeds, oats, barley, broccoli and leafy green vegetables are so incredibly important to continued health. 46 THE MARKET PLACE
Black Beans - one of the healthiest foods Some promising research has been done that demonstrates the power of black beans when it comes to combating inflammation, preventing cancers and heart disease, keeping weight gain and obesity at bay, and excellent support for our digestive health. Studies have shown that the deep, dark coat on the black bean is a powerful source of three important flavonoids: delphinidin, petunidin, and malvidin. These important substances are super-high in antioxidant activity. Just one cup of black beans has a whopping 15 grams of protein! Not only that, but there is zero saturated fat in these tasty legumes, which are a lean, plant-based protein that can be enjoyed by vegans, vegetarians, and non-vegetarian eaters alike. This protein-powered bean gives you a longer feeling of satiation, which can help you feel good all day long.
Global food waste reaches epic levels Every year, around 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted. Economic crises coupled with a growing global population means each of us needs to play our part in reducing waste. Approximately one-third of global food production goes to waste. Most of this waste happens before food even gets to consumers - 27% is lost at the processing and packaging stage, 26% during agricultural production, 17% during distribution and 4% after produce had been purchased by consumers. A well-known supermarket chain in the UK reportedly threw away almost 30,000 tons of food in a six month period last year, while the UK public discard an estimated 15 million tons of food annually. In 2013, the UN Environment Program (UNEP) launched a campaign to educate and advise the public about food choices, particularly highlighting unnecessary wastage. Think. Eat. Save. Reduce your Foodprint.

At a whopping 24,150,000 permanent inhabitants, Shanghai is the only city that is home to over 24 million people in one city.
It is the lowest known natural point in the world at 35,797 ft. below sea level at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Only 3 people have ever made it to the bottom in a submersible, one of which was filmmaker James Cameron.
Death Valley National Park Planet's hottest place The highest air temperature ever recorded on Earth was 134 degrees Fahrenheit, at Death Valley National Park on July 10, 1913.
East Antarctic Plateau Planet's coldest place On the high ridge of the East Antarctic Plateau, the temperature can drop to as low as -135.8 degrees Fahrenheit, which was recorded in August, 2010.
Mawsynram, India Wettest spot on the planet In this city in India, it rains an average of 467.35 inches per year, and has a record of 1,000 inches in 1985... much more than any rain forest. 48 THE MARKET PLACE

TAIL (Torrox Animal International League) I am constantly surprised by the amount of insults and abuse that are levelled at the officers, particularly the President, of the societies which exist to try and do good by making a small difference. In reality the whole charity is shouldered by one, sometimes two and occasionally three people, Polly, waiting for with many others helping in more her forever home general ways such as a stint in a shop. However daily there are a multitude of unexpected tasks that crop up to make the most planned schedule disappear with the wind. At Tail it is always the President who is called and expected to produce miracles, and when that proves impossible or beyond Tail’s resources all hell breaks out from someone who seems to think that Tail is obligated to do what they ask for. I know from past discussions that the problem is common to all, Triple A in Marbella, APARIV in Rincon who have just had to rehash their facebook page to prevent gratuitous insulting postings, Nerja Donkey Sanctuary who are now closed, and maybe you remember Kims Animal Charity in Mijas who struggled with the mountain of work to keep things going but were nearly closed down by the authorities because of complaints that they couldn’t cope. Why, oh why, instead of complaining didn’t those busybodies go along and put some time in? Everyone wants to be the Chief but no one wants to be an Indian. Well, put yourself forward and be prepared to have to act instead of complaining from the sidelines. CAS are presently looking for a President and I’m sure Tail will not be far behind.
C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) CAS celebrates summer! The date of one of the year’s biggest fund-raisers for the Costa Animal Society has been set for Friday, June 19. The Celebration of Summer Ball will be held at the Caves Restaurant in Maro and promises an evening of music, dancing and fun. As usual, the evening will start with canapés and drinks, followed by a three-course dinner served with wine and coffee. Afterwards, dance until late to entertainment provided by the ever-popular Flying Dolphins who have been CAS members’ favourites for many years. 50 THE MARKET PLACE
Unfortunately, CAS and all animal protection groups are already full to the brim with adult abandoned animals and there are no spare funds to place these new waifs in kennels. Therefore, CAS urgently needs people to foster puppies and kittens, even if it is just for a couple of weeks, until a more permanent solution can be found. Please contact the CAS office on 95 252 3607 for a noobligation chat if you could help with fostering. It’s an ideal way for pet lovers who spend only part of the year in Spain to enjoy the company of an animal while they are here.
Pet owners’ profiles Dog owners in Spain are most likely to have Yorkshire terriers, German shepherd or Labradors, according to a new survey. Data from research by Veterinary Management Studies for QVET show that mongrels account for over 52 per cent of the total. Small dogs have grown in popularity with Maltese and Chihuahuas increasing in numbers over the last three years, while the largest canine populations are to be found in Murcia, Valencia and Aragón. Almost 88 per cent of cats are short-haired with over 12 per cent accounted for by Persians and other long-haired breeds. Around a third are the European variety and just over a quarter are moggies. British Shorthair and Maine Coon are amongst varieties which have risen in popularity over the last three years, while Navarra and Cataluña boast the most pedigree cats. The average age of Spain’s pet dogs is five years three months, although 1.6 per cent are still going strong after 16 years or more. The average of pet cats is just over five years, but, as cats live longer than dogs, more than four per cent have lived for 16 years or longer.
Dogs pay their respects An amazing story of animal loyalty has emerged from Yucatan where a dog-over, Margarita Suarez, died during March. She was well know for feeding the stray animals which turned up at her home every morning, and would take food with her when she went out to distribute amongst strays she encountered along the way. Family members and workers at the funeral parlour where Margarita’s body was being kept were stunned when several dogs turned up. No-one had seen them before but they were let in and curled up on the floor next to her coffin to pay their last respects. On the day of the funeral, the dogs formed a procession after the hearse and then returned to the parlour, disappearing only after her body was being prepared for cremation. Margarita’s daughter Patricia said she believed the animals had wanted to be there to say goodbye to someone who had been so good to them.

Call for volunteers! The Costa Animal Society needs more volunteers to join its small band of dedicated helpers raising money to help animals in distress in this area. CAS is in particular need of those who could give time to run its charity shop in Nerja on weekdays. If you have time and energy and could spare a few hours a week to help raise money for stray and abandoned animals, please call Diana Carter, CAS’s secretary, for a no-obligation chat. Diana would also like to hear from anyone who can donate goods which can be sold to raise cash for the charity’s work. CAS can collect items in the local area. Diana Carter can be contacted on 679 714 612 or email bridicarter@yahoo.co.uk

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

La Herradura
nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Lake Viñuela
is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
