Local News Local News Local News Construction waste project in Mezquitilla Velez Malaga Town Hall has been awarded four million euros of European funding in order to conduct a new project which will use construction waste to protect part of the Mezquitilla beach from coastal erosion. The rubble will be used over the next 3 years and form part of the sea defence.
Velez Malaga to be the first municipality in Spain to install defibrillators in their schools
The City Council will install defibrillators and a lifevac system in the 21 municipal schools, 19 schools for children and two nurseries in Vélez-Málaga. The city of Vélez-Málaga will be the first municipality in Spain to have cardioprotected schools and nurseries with the installation of 21 defibrillators in these centres. The Mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Antonio Moreno Ferrer; the Councilor for Human Resources, Ana Campos; the commercial manager of the Salvavidas project, Julián Díez; and the director of CEIP Axarquía, Antonio Ríos, were shown the semi-automatic defibrillator model Zoll AED Plus at a local school and a demonstration with a child doll was carried out. The Headmaster of the Axarquia school, Antonio Ríos, recalled that the centre has 476 students, about 40 employees and a large number of parents who frequent the facilities so this initiative is undoubtedly great news for all. "We are very pleased with this implementatioan and now the challenge of the school is to integrate defibrillators into the day-to-day life of students and teachers through a specific training programme to normalize their use through education," concluded the director. In Spain, about 80% of heart attacks occur outside the health field, making life-saving technologies such as these first-aid systems more likely to be used by non-health personnel.

Axarquia farmers demand answers over drought More than 60 fruit growing communities in Axarquia have demanded action over the drought problem in the region. Most of the problem is due to an increase in demand by farmers due to water thirsty fruit trees being planted in the area, this trend has doubled in the past 10 years which has put pressure on the water supply. It has also emerged that only 6 of these communities have got correct documentation which throws into play the question of legality of a booming industry. At the first meeting of the growers, water was the main issue and they demanded that the water board carry out a series of works to prevent further irrigation cuts. At present La Vinuela reservoir is only 27% full, (reaching it's drought threshhold in the summer) so it seems likely that there will be further irrigation bans this Autumn. Cultivation of water-thirsty fruits, including mangoes and avocados, has more than doubled in the past 10 years, putting pressure on Axarquia’s water supply. The Councillor for the Environment admitted that lack of water was taking its toll and was a problem for the future.
Love A Child Foundation Love A Child Foundation would like to inform all its donors and supporters that John Margetson and Lynne Carr-Jones will be retiring from the foundation at the end of this year. The foundation has now completed all its overseas projects and will not be taking on any further projects or sponsors. We have a small number of children that are still sponsored and we will continue to support these children. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Nicole Brouwers and her wonderful shop ‘Pocapecunia’ for the tremendous support that she has given the foundation since its inception; without Nicole and Ted’s help many of our projects would not have come to fruition. Nicole of course will continue with the shop and will be supporting other national and international charities.

Refurbishment of the Old Lighthouse of Torre del Mar
The deputy mayor of Torre del Mar and Councilor for Tourism, Jesús Pérez Atencia, recently visited the refurbishment works being carried out on the old Torre del Mar Lighthouse, located on the Paseo Marítimo next to the new lighthouse, which is currently in operation. The works have a predicted term of three months and consist of the refurbishment of both the lighthouse and the maintenance stand. The project incorporates the transplantation of two palm trees and pines very close to the lighthouse and the shed, which have a negative impact on the look of the lighthouse; the cleaning of the facade of the lighthouse and the small house at the side of it; the replacement of woodwork and a new brass with glass; the cleaning of all interior linings; also cleaning, protection and painting the headlight railing. This has been an initiative of the Torreño Deputy Mayor, Jesus Atencia, who aims to "create an exhibition space in Torre del Mar that encompasses the locations of the three remaining lighthouses, the stands where the engines were located, and their surrounding lands ".

The Natural Wonder of
El Torcal
El Torcal offers a unique route through a karstic labyrinth where nature shows its most creative side through limestone rocks. It also has a valuable bio-diversity and at only 13km from Malaga it really is a World Heritage Site we should explore not ignore.
S
tones with unpredictable shapes, spectacular structures and a walk for the whole family through the history of the planet. These are some of the characteristics that define El Torcal, a natural site located in Antequera where nothing is what it seems. Nature shows its most creative side here, modeling one of the most striking karstic landscapes in Europe. And surprisingly; despite its current altitude of 1,300 meters, 250 million years ago it was under the sea. The numerous fossils of ammonites that can still be found prove this.
and rock masses formed by the dissolution of the limestone. Much can easily be seen through the two hiking routes of differing difficulty. The natural site can be easily reached by car and access to the public is free. The interpretation centre organises guided tours which offers visits to specific areas and all sorts of varied activities, thanks to the geological richness and biodiversity of El Torcal.
Walking El Torcal
Exploring the landscape here via the walking routes is a wonderful thing that can be enjoyed by the whole family, and
It was 55 million years ago when this landscape began to emerge from the depths due to the collision of terrestrial tectonic plates. This pressure raised the bottom of the sea, composed of an accumulation and deposit of skeletons and shells of marine animals. The composition of limestone rocks, hard yet easily erodible, is an essential aspect that has allowed the passage of time and the action of the wind and the rain to carve unique forms in this incredible landscape.
Incredible Figures
The symbol of El Torcal is the famous "Tornillo". It is a series of flat rocks that support each other with eroded slits between them, similar to the form of screws. It is not the only recognizable figure: the Pot, the Sphinx, the Camel or the Chalice are just a few more of them, not forgetting the thousands of caves 10 THE MARKET PLACE

leaving only the most resistant minerals. One of the best times to visit El Torcal is either Autumn or Spring when the weather has cooled a little from the hot summer. The silence and inner peace that you feel and the magic of the shapes and history that surround you make this excursion unique. There are many people that visit El Torcal to meditate.
Recommendations There are some places along the route which are steep and there could be danger of slipping, so ensure you wear suitable hiking boots. If you are taking very small children, it is advisable to have a baby carrier (these can be rented if necessary in the visitors centre).
Astronomy - Knowing the Secrets of the Sky
children will have an unforgettable day. Walking the marked paths is very simple and there are 3 levels of difficulty. The orange route or Torcal Alto (almost 4km and an hour and a half, just one way) ascends to the Natural Monument of El Tornillo, the yellow route, (3km and a circular route) reaches Torcal Alto, passes through corridors where the shade predominates and passes by structures such as "El Arce de Montpellier". The 1.5km green route is perfect for going with young children and takes in all the essentials. If you are unable to walk, getting to the top without walking is possible via a shuttle bus, so you can still enjoy the breathtaking views from the top.
The height of El Torcal and the low light pollution around it make it the perfect place to discover the universe. Thus, another interesting option is to participate in the activities of its astronomical observatory, which allow you to become familiar with the secrets of the sky. These take place in the summer, when the weather is warmer and skies clear. The observatory has an astronomer who is very passionate, and who will talk about the stars and point out the constellations - if you are lucky you can see some planets.
Visitors Centre Before you go and explore the park, it is advisable to go to the visitors centre, where they explain the scientific reasons for the spectacular landscape and is also perfect if you prefer guided tours with in-depth knowledge as you pass through the site. For example, some of these marine fossils and rocks are more than 150 million years old and are limestone dolomites and soft gypsum, which is sensitive to erosion. The action of rain, wind and snow has shaped the area by dissolving the carbonates and

How to convert your child’s bedroom to a modern suitable space for teens
A teenager’s bedroom is a dynamic and versatile space in which young people perform a wide variety of tasks. Studying, working, relaxing, listening to music and connecting and socializing with friends. So move any remaining toys to the storage area and redecorate the bedroom and include three specific areas; a rest area, a study area and an area to share with friends. A Space to Rest When children in the household grow, the bed should grow with them. This main element of the bedroom is not just a place to sleep. For them it is also a space for reading, listening to music and watching television. If space permits the width of the bed should be at least 105cm. If the bedroom is particulary small, a raised bed with a desk underneath may be the ideal solution. Young children may love sharing their room with their siblings but young teens value privacy and freedom to have their own space, so a shared bedroom is not ideal.
Young students also need space to organise their books and school supplies. The empty space on a desk or bed can be perfect to include as many cabinets and floating shelves as possible.
A Place to Socialise Young people like to bring friends home and spend time with them in their bedroom. Rugs and poufs can provide the youth bedroom with enough informal space to sit and chat with friends.
Modern computers and mobile devices have replaced television or music equipment in youth bedrooms and discs, CDs, DVDs, etc. have also disappeared An Area to Study with them. Almerimar Golf
Foreground: 11th green. Background: 12th green (photo: AR Hotels)
Until recently a two hour plus trip along the old winding coastal road, AlmerĂa and it's nearby golf courses was off limits to all but the most dedicated golfers. With the opening of the new motorway all this changed - as the region's courses are now accessible in around half that time... So rather than our typical saturday awayday trip to one of the Marbella courses, we headed east towards the rising sun and Almerimar golf resort. This 27 hole layout is part of the five star AR Hotel Resort. It is located just metres from the leisure port of Almerimar, 40kms west of AlmerĂa and just an hour and a quarter (118kms) from Nerja. We decided to walk the course rather than take buggies so we booked an early tee time to ensure we were well into our round before the sun began to get too hot. We were booked to play 'master courses 1 and 2', the original 18 holes. Playing the first hole, a par 5, we noted the lushness of the wide fairway. Playing in late September you often find the long, dry summer has taken it's toll but the condition of the course was excellent throughout. Almerimar is a flat course with wide, inviting fairways for the most part but this doesn't make it a boring or easy track. Designed by Rob Kirby and Gary Player back in the mid 1970's, it features tall, mature palms and trees, a number of dog-legs and various water hazards to keep you interested. At 6,148 metres from the yellow tees it's also

fairly long - in comparison Malaga's Parador measures 6,040 metres. Despite it's length, it didn't play like a typical bomber's course, with many holes requiring a clever positional tee shot rather than a booming drive. A good example is the par 5 11th, a double dogleg that is best navigated with a well placed drive right of the left hand bunker, a mid-iron to the right fairway and then a short iron over the water to the green. Shorter hitters can comfortably lay up in three, and leave a flick with a wedge to the green. Amongst the four par 3's are two nice island holes - the 8th and 12th. Both are over 160 metres, requiring an accurate shot with a mid iron or hybrid to avoid the water. The 9th, a 500 metre par 5, requires an accurate tee shot to avoid a vast lake and is probably best played by laying up short, rather than trying to find the narrow landing area to the left of the lake with a big drive. Overall, Almerimar is a course suited to players of all abilities and is a great option if you prefer to walk the course rather than take a buggy. The five star spa hotel and leisure port just metres away make this an ideal choice for a long weekend. There are also a few other courses nearby if you want a bit of golfing variety during your stay. A minor criticism was that the greens were a little fluffy on the front nine but our putts seemed to roll a lot better on the second nine once the morning dew had burned off. Post-round we enjoyed a few drinks and some excellent tapas on the comfortable hotel terrace. The cost of our late September four ball was a very reasonable 140E.

Why is Air Conditioning Maintenance Important? Air conditioners need yearly maintenance to maintain proper performance. With the proper maintenance your air conditioning and heating equipment will work more economically and be more dependable for years to come. With a few easy and routine procedures you can keep your unit at peak performance and get the maximum amount of comfort from your HVAC system.
Saving on consumption
(Improving the monthly energy costs) Air conditioners consume a large portion of the average monthly power bill and proper and efficient maintenance can make a significant difference. Your air conditioner loses 10% of its overall efficiency every year it goes without proper professional maintenance. Systems operating at peak efficiency can cut monthly energy costs by up to 25%.
Recovering Lost Efficiency Fortunately most users can recover lost efficiency through service and maintenance from trained professionals.
Lengthens equipment life Proper maintenance effectively doubles the life span of the average residential heating and cooling system.
Better indoor Air Quality Your air conditioning unit does more than just cool your home; they also play an important role in helping keep the air circulating inside your home clean and healthy. A dirty unit provides a suitable breeding ground for mould, fungi, bacteria and germs to thrive. In effect, whenever you turn on your unit, these particles get blown into the room and contaminate the air, exposing you and your family to a variety of respiratory infections and could even trigger asthma.
Keeping your air conditioning unit properly maintained and regularly cleaned provides a lot of benefits. We recommend every 12 months. Those listed above are just some of the main reasons why you should consider using a professional air conditioning company such as KLIMACENTRO.
WITH REGULAR MAINTENANCE WE IMPROVE QUALITY OF OUR HEALTH, AND SAVINGS FOR OUR POCKET.

First Driving Impressions – SEAT Ibiza UK Press Event, Liverpool to North Wales We stayed at the Shankly Hotel in Liverpool - a building that has previously been a Bank and a Government Building and is now a very interesting and unique hotel with rooftop views overlooking the city.
T
he all-new SEAT Ibiza is the 5th Generation, and the backbone of the SEAT range. The first Ibiza was launched in 1984 and since then 5.4 million have been produced, with around 300,000 sold in the UK. So what’s new with this new Ibiza? Well, pretty much everything, including the MQB A0 platform. The Ibiza is the first car in the Volkswagen Group to use it, though it won’t be long before more small cars are launched using this new technology. The exterior and interior are all-new, as is the engine line-up. We set off from Liverpool and headed towards North Wales in a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder TSI petrol engine that produces 95ps. Other engines available at launch are... well, just a 1.0-litre that produce 75ps or 115ps. The very smooth four-cylinder 1.5 TSI EVO petrol engine and a 1.6TDI will be available later in 2017. The 95ps does look on paper a bit underpowered for this super-mini sized hatch, but it soon proved us wrong. What a nice, sweet, quiet little engine, with more than enough power. We left the comfort of the city and soon reached the very pretty countryside with lots of scenic places - but very little mobile phone coverage. We did have sat-nav though to help us find our destination, but if we had to rely on our mobile phone for navigation, as more and more people are, we would probably still be looking for our lunch stop. That is the problem with connecting your phone to the cars systems, as you have to rely on a signal, so out in the sticks can prove difficult and it is normally in remote places you need satellite navigation more than anywhere. The new Ibiza is overall slightly shorter than the outgoing model but is slightly wider - the wheelbase has grown by 60mm. These changes in dimensions haven’t affected interior space - in fact, they have grown, with more rear leg and head room, and the boot space has grown by 63-litres to 355-litres with rear seats up. The exterior has got some really nice and crisp lines which are accentuated through some very clever metal pressing at the factory in Barcelona. Only a five-door car will be available, the Coupe and Estate are now obsolete. The SEAT Arona SUV 20 THE MARKET PLACE
which is based on the Ibiza will take the place of the Ibiza estate later this year. Models available at launch are: S, SE, FR and XCELLANCE. All have a good level of standard specification with the S having air-con, auto-headlights, trip-computer, height adjustable drivers seats and much more as standard. The SE is likely to be the best seller, with the FR not far behind it. The SE has 15-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights with cornering function, leather steering wheel, gear knob and hand brake, spilt folding rear seats. The FR, gets more sporty looks and 17-inch alloy wheels, twin exhaust pipe, FR front seats, dark tinted rear windows, sports suspension and cruise control, and much more besides. After a two hour drive, with three of us in the car, we reached Lynn Brenig Reservoir, a popular tourist destination, and I can see why - it's very pretty. We had fish, chips and mushy peas from a van on the waterside. A nice sunny day in North Wales, a good hearty lunch and splendid views to sit and eat our welldeserved lunch. We swapped cars and got into a 95ps XCELLENCE with its 16inch machined alloy wheels, black Alcantara and ‘simil’ leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, front and rear view cameras, cruise control and front arm-rest - a well kitted out car and a pleasure to drive and be a passenger in, whether in the front or the roomy-rear. The Ibiza is built at the Martorell factory near Barcelona and will be produced alongside the forthcoming Arona, and the new Audi A1. It is built to a very high quality throughout, and proves that SEAT is no longer the ‘poor-relation’ in the VW family. The all-new SEAT Ibiza is certainly all-new, hardly any carryover parts from the previous car, a very pleasant drive, good quality and good levels of standard specification. Prices start from £13,130 OTR and go up to £17,310 OTR. My choice would be the FR 95ps costing £16,015 OTR. The Ibiza had better watch out though, as the Arona is bound to steal sales from it.

I begin by considering the painter’s early life and influences and the variety of styles he tried before developing and settling on his own idiosyncratic style. Dalí came late to Surrealism and was ousted by its controlling leader Andre Breton before too many years had passed. Nevertheless Dalí is often regarded as the archetypal Surrealist. I discuss this notion but also explain Dalí’s personal response to Surrealism, in particular the approach he called his ‘paranoiac critical activity’, one which spawned works such as The

November Film & Tapas Evening at FTK Next up in this season’s popular Film & Tapa evenings at FTK in Nerja is another film that makes a local contribution to Reformation 500, the world-wide celebrations of the movement that dates its tipping point on 31st October 1517. “God’s Outlaw” will be screened at 7.30pm on Friday 3rd November at FTK’s premises in Pasaje San Miguel (around the corner from the main Mercadona.) This true story has all the ingredients of a suspenseful thriller - international politics, a king, a prime minister, a cardinal, a queen; intrigue, secret agents, a fugitive and cold-blooded betrayal. I have to declare an interest here William Tyndale has long been one of my heroes and this award-winning film tells his story. He lived in the colourful and cruel days of Henry VIII, when men were burned, racked and maimed for much lesser crimes than his - that of seeking to make the Bible available to his fellowcountrymen in their own language. This he had to do in defiance of the king (who supported him and opposed him by turns), the pope and, frankly, just about everybody else in authority. This forced him to leave England to find safe hideouts where he could continue his work of translation; he spoke eight languages so fluently that he was able to evade capture for years: nobody was able to detect 22 THE MARKET PLACE
which was his native language! Thus he moved around in Germany, Holland and Belgium always trying to stay one step ahead of the secret agents sent to capture him. Like many Reformation heroes, he valued his own life as less important than the truth and so he lived in poverty while working tirelessly in an attempt to complete the work of translation before the inevitable happened. This is a fine drama, but the context and conflicts are medieval, making their worries, concerns, interests and ideas seem foreign, even strange, to the modern viewer; nevertheless, these people and these issues played a massive role in creating the modern world in which we live and so they merit our reflection. Tyndale’s dying prayer, in October 1536, was, “Lord, open the King of England’s eyes.” Less than two years later Henry commanded an English Bible be placed
in every church in England! The New Testament it contained was Tyndale’s work virtually unaltered! His prayer was answered and our modern world was on its way. As the reviewers say, “A gripping tale, beautifully told” (Daily Mail) and “Admirably convincing”. (Sunday Times) Do join us for a fascinating evening! Manish's Zodiac predictions - November Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )
Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )
You’re feeling especially optimistic about your work this month, and you’re being received in a wonderfully charming light. It’s easy to rally up support now. Career-wise your power to attract attention boosts your position amongst the favoured but beware competition can be stiff. Any “crisis” occurring in your work at this time is simply clearing the way towards better work conditions. You’ve likely been focused on your career and life path, but in November focus could shift to your hopes and dreams, your friends, and pursuing causes. You’ll have more energy and drive for your hobbies and just having more of a good time, wanting to get out more with people instead of staying at home. You may want to try new things and explore in a less serious, more curious way.
Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)
Financial matters seem very promising this month, but be careful that you don’t overdo spending or purchase large ticket items that you are likely to regret later in November. The job front will be successful and you may hear news you’ve been waiting to hear. You will be the most charming this month and let the positive energy keep flowing. Close relationships will benefit greatly.
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )
You can be looking at money matters from a new and helpful perspective and motivation to turn over a new leaf regarding finances and relationship expectations can be strong. Turn your attention to things you already have and think about how you can rework or recycle them for best results. All-new endeavours look very appealing, it’s better to finish what you started before moving on.
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )
You are seeing past relationships and expectations in a different light and redefining what it is you now want and need from your connections and your studies. New information can surface that shines a light on a past matter, or there can be a connection made with someone from your past. You would reorganize your financial strategy, avoid extravaganza, give importance to priorities in life and save for the future.
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )
You can feel particularly impassioned and motivated to learn, share ideas, and work on pet projects. You may come across a little abruptly at times, but you have a lot going on and much to keep you busy and engaged. Being around other people in groups may be how you feel best going into November, but as the month rolls on, you may want to be by yourself more, needing to reenergize with some rest and retreat. 28 THE MARKET PLACE
This is a time for making decisions and correcting imbalances in your life, particularly if you’ve been overly tied up with your daily affairs and living in your mind a little too much. You have a need to live and love more freely rather than spending too much time worrying about problems. Travel or connections made with people from vastly different cultures than your own can be enjoyable and beneficial. This is a strong month for accounting work and taking charge of your intimate or financial life. The desire for recognition of your performance can be stimulated. Unhealthy dependencies need to go. While some of you could be experiencing real conflicts with a partner or best friend, others may be actively working to improve partnerships. Relationships that have been too restrictive, tense, dull, or negative need to improve.
Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )
This month brings strong and enthusiastic energy to your domestic projects and home life. You’re generally in good shape when it comes to your close relationships as well animating romantic relationships, firing up feelings towards someone, and inspiring you to create, share, and connect. There is more fire, passion, and motivation to express yourself in unique, special ways, and more courage to chase your heart’s desire.
Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January ) This can be a good time for self-discovery as well as assistance and support of others. You may get a chance to make peace with the past in some significant manner. It’s a good period for refocusing and re-establishing yourself and your goals. This month helps to soften your disposition and aids efforts to enjoy yourself, pursue your wishes, and “make nice” with people in your life.
Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February ) You’re more assertive and opportunities that emerge are a little clearer and more straightforward. You pay more attention to personal needs and wants, your image, appearance, and health. Personal magnetism moves up a notch. People notice you, want you, and want to be around you. You are more interested in the long term when it comes to love, although, friendship and camaraderie assume more importance during last week.
Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )
It’s not the most decisive month, but future decisions will be stronger if you take the time to reflect now. You might take this time to re-assess your longer-term goals, group associations, friendships, educational situation, and communication projects. Your personal attraction is strong. Conversations with friends can be inspiring and stimulating. There may be opportunities to meet someone special through groups, acquaintances, and networking.
Chiringuito de Ayo Generally known as 'Ayo's'. If you wish to enjoy the best paella on the Costa del Sol, Ayo's is the place to visit. Ayo's is situated on the famous Burriana Beach, where tourists and residents are attracted by the Chiringuito's and restaurants, not just to enjoy the paellas, but also the unique atmosphere. Surrounded by palm trees, banana trees, and covered by an immense thatched roof, this is the ideal location to enjoy a beautiful day on the beach.
A wide range of international & Spanish dishes for all tastes. Meats, fresh fish, sea food, salads, & foremost, the house specialty, Giant Paella, prepared over wood fire under a thatched roof. No need to reserve, because there is always freshly prepared paella available.

The 7 organs you can live without If you lose your heart, you’re pretty much a goner. But there are other seemingly vital organs that aren’t all that vital at all...
4 Natural ingredients to manage aches & pains
These are the natural alternatives a doctor recommends to help ease inflammation and joint pain.
Krill Oil Krill Oil possesses antioxidant activity that is 48 times higher than fish oil. Studies have shown that krill oil can help to reduce inflammation in the body, including inflammation associated with osteoarthritis. Krill oil contains the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) The best food sources of EPA and DHA are fish and shellfish. If you are struggling to reach the recommended 2-3 serves of fish per week, consider a krill oil supplement to help increase your intake.
Turmeric and Curcumin Turmeric is best known as a powdered spice used to give foods flavour and colour – think curries. It contains a natural chemical compound called curcumin that scientists have found to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Glucosamine Research has shown that glucosamine supplements (often combined with chondroitin) appear to reduce pain, stiffness and improve joint function in osteoarthritis. There aren't any natural food sources of glucosamine, so consider supplementation to help increase levels in the body.
Ginger Used in Asian medicine for centuries, ginger has been shown to have antiinflammatory properties similar to ibuprofen and COX-2 inhibitors such as celecoxib. Studies have shown that ginger extract decreases joint pain and reduces inflammation in people with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, by reducing the production of several chemical substances that promote joint inflammation. 34 THE MARKET PLACE
SPLEEN This organ sits on the left side of the abdomen, towards the back under the ribs. It is most commonly removed as a result of injury. It is enclosed by a tissue paper-like capsule, which easily tears, allowing blood to leak from the damaged spleen. If not diagnosed and treated, it will result in death. When you look inside the spleen, it has two notable colours. A dark red colour and small pockets of white. These link to the functions. The red is involved in storing and recycling red blood cells, while the white is linked to storage of white cells and platelets. You can comfortably live without a spleen. This is because the liver plays a role in recycling red blood cells and their components. STOMACH The stomach performs four main functions: mechanical digestion by contracting to smash up food, chemical digestion by releasing acid to help chemically break up food, and then absorption and secretion. The stomach is sometimes surgically removed as a result of cancer or trauma. When the stomach is removed, surgeons attach the oesophagus (gullet)
directly to the small intestines. REPRODUCTIVE ORGANS The primary reproductive organs in the male and female are the testes and ovaries, respectively. These structures are paired and people can still have children with only one functioning. The removal of one or both are usually the result of cancer, or in males, trauma, often as a result of violence, sports or road traffic accidents. In females, the uterus (womb) may also be removed. COLON The colon (or large intestine) is a tube that is about six-feet in length. The primary functions are to resorb water and prepare faeces by compacting it together. The presence of cancer or other diseases can result in the need to remove some or all of the colon. GALL BLADDER The gallbladder sits under the liver on the upperright side of the abdomen. It stores something called bile. When the intestine detect fats, a hormone is released causing the gallbladder to contract, forcing bile into the intestines to help digest fat. However, excess cholesterol in bile can form gallstones, which can block the tiny pipes that move bile around. When this happens, people may need their gallbladder removed. APPENDIX The appendix is a small blind-ended wormlike structure at the junction of the large and the small bowel. It is believed to be involved in being a “safehouse” for the good bacteria of the bowel, enabling them to repopulate when needed. Due to the blind-ended nature of the appendix, when intestinal contents enter it, it can be difficult for them to escape and so it becomes inflamed. This is called appendicitis. In severe cases, the appendix needs to be surgically removed. KIDNEYS Most people have two kidneys, but you can survive with just one - or even none (with the aid of dialysis). The role of the kidneys is to filter the blood to maintain water and electrolyte balance, as well as the acid-base balance. More importantly, it gets rid of many things we don’t need, letting them pass through the sieve to leave the kidneys as urine.
An exercise to get the best arms of your life If you’re looking to tone your upper body – specifically, your arms – there is one exercise that far supersedes its peers, it's all about the tricep dip. The humble tricep dip packs mean punch by activating all three tricep heads. Yes, your triceps are made up of three components, encompassing approximately two thirds of the muscle mass in your arm. Not only that, but tricep dips also target your shoulders, chest, back and core, which means you need no equipment for an exercise that ticks all the boxes! Take a few minutes out of your routine and spend the time to do a series of these every evening at home. You don’t need any equipment, and for the best possible result, push up quickly and lower down slowly.
Meditation is such a powerful technique that, after only 8 weeks the brain's structure changes.

Essential Gadgets for a Road Trip
While many newer cars come packed with every tech upgrade imaginable — charging ports at every seat, 360 cameras, and WiFi — the one you have or rent might not. In that case, it's worth investing in a few key accessories that you can take from one rental to another for all your year's road tripping adventures.

If you're camping outside and want to stream a show or YouTube clip, consider buying a projector for your nighttime entertainment. There are plenty of pricier projectors with higher resolution picture quality, but if you don't want to spend a fortune, try the Mini Projector Mpow full HD which gets good reviews on Amazon. GOgroove FlexSMART X2 Bluetooth FM Transmitter If your car doesn't come with built-in Bluetooth, this inexpensive transmitter makes it possible to connect for easy access to stream music or take a call. You'll be able to pair two devices at once, letting you easily switch off who is controlling the tunes at a time.

Mophie Charge Force Vent Mount
If you're travelling with others, you'll probably need to figure out how everyone can charge up. Ankara's small car charger has two USB ports, so two people can plug in at a time. An LED light makes it easy to see the charger when you're driving at night.
This is a given, but if you're using your phone as your GPS, you want it where you can see it. The easiest option is to put a holder on one of the car's air vents. Mophie's vent mount is magnetized (you'll need to invest in the brand's wireless battery case, too), and will charge your phone while you get directions. If you're looking for a non-charging option, try Moshi's smartphone car mount.

The Royal British Legion, Nerja Branch In September we held a concert by the Cowbridge Male Voice Choir in the Caves Restaurant and what a splendid evening it proved to be. The amazing resonance of the combined voices, a beautiful selection of Welsh songs and popular music enthralled everyone who attended. Not only did they sing to us but the after concert on the terrace later entertained us with readings, poems and banter. A thoroughly enjoyable evening and one we would love to repeat. An additional bonus was the 820 euros which we made and will go to our Poppy Appeal this year. Part of the monies made was from the excellent raffle, and our thanks go to anyone who donated prizes, but in particular to Thai Pas, a new and innovative little restaurant which is situated just opposite the Lighthouse in Torrox and well worth a visit. Only opened a few months ago the Thai food is authentic and very reasonably priced. As a relatively new business in Spain where it is often difficult to progress, we really 36 THE MARKET PLACE
appreciate their donation to our raffle. The new British barber also situated on Avenida del Faro in Torrox donated a voucher to the raffle and is much appreciated. The annual Poppy Walk took place on Sunday 15th October and was well attended. The walk from the hotel Andalus to the El Puente Restaurant via the Balcon de Europa was a sponsored walk to raise funds for the 2017 Poppy Appeal. On the 10th November we are holding the Poppy Ball at the Caves Restaurant, this year again with the Los Romanos Branch. This year again looks like being a fun event with Barry Marx and the “Juke Box Bandits”. Surprisingly the cost of the tickets remains the same as it has been for the past 14 years!......35 euros for canapes and drinks on arrival, a three course meal with wine, and coffee, dancing and raffle. Remembrance Day event this year is at the Al Andalus hotel (not the Caves Restaurant) and will include readings, poems and music. We are tremendously grateful to Tom Robinson our musical director who works tirelessly with the Remembrance Choir to provide us with the beautiful performances that have come to mark our Commemoration of Remembrance Day. This event is non religious, and anyone who wishes to come along is very welcome. Lunch afterwards is by prior booking only, and can be done through Vera, Tel: 952967200 Email: ozzybaldwin@yahoo.co.uk I always stress that our branch is very friendly and welcoming.
We are not at all concerned about nationality, religion or lack of it. We always appreciate the support we get from friends and members but like all charities we need new people to join us and maintain the impetus that enables us to donate so generously to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and the Personnel Recovery Centre in Edinburgh. Though no longer headline news from Afghanistan or Iraq our troops are still involved in many countries round the world and working in many different ways to maintain peace and improve the lives of many. Say "NO" to dieting and welcome weight neutrality When you finally stop dieting, what happens next? Many people find that they go through a stage of "reactive eating." You might find yourself wrestling with the aftermath of all those times you learned (from the process of dieting itself) to ignore your body cues. The foods you eat may be the very foods forbidden to you on the diet, whether you are really hungry for them or not. You might feel out of control but defiant, and then you might panic and consider going back on another diet! When we are kids, we have to comply with the authority figures' demands. When we are teens, many of us try to prove to ourselves that we are not being controlled by those authority figures by doing the opposite of those demands. But in truth, we are still controlled by those demands because we are doing the exact opposite rather than what we really might want to do independently. And that is the goal of adulthood, to not be driven one way or the other by those outside forces.
What does this have to do with food? Dieting sets up a psychological state of childhood. Listen to women talking about how they were "good" all day until they were "bad" because they ate a "forbidden" food. In order to diet successfully, we believe that we have to comply with an outside "experts" idea of how we should eat: "Eat this food, in this amount, at this time." This is obedience, compliance, going with the program, whatever you want to label it. Sooner or later, for most people, the diet falls apart. And for many of us, rather than reverting back to the pre-diet way of eating what we want, when we're hungry, we go through a state of psychological adolescence or teenhood. Now, that diet gets turned on its head! If grapefruit was a diet food, we scorn it. If ice cream was forbidden, it suddenly seems like the most compelling food on earth. We may also eat past the point of fullness, not just for physiological reasons (because there are those too) but for the psychological reason that we have been too hungry on the diet and we are trying to prove to ourselves that we won't go hungry again.
The Health at Every Size Model The Health at Every Size model is an alternative to traditional weight-focused interventions. It emphasizes: • the quality of your day-to-day life, • finding sustainable ways to take care of yourself, and • accepting the size that your body is when you are taking care of yourself as your unique healthy weight. (Weight Neutral)
Why Weight Neutrality? If you are experiencing "dieting detox," try to have some compassion for yourself. The good news is that for most people, this, too, shall pass. The part of you that has felt its needs were ignored on the diet has to be reassured that you will not keep ignoring your needs. When you no longer have anything to prove, it is easier to hear your body again. 1 Picking a weight and then trying to reach and maintain it usually doesn’t work. Follow-up studies of 2-5 years show almost everyone regains at least the weight they lost if not more, regardless of treatment. 2 Weight loss promoters promise a better life. But trying to reach a specific number on the scale leaves you vulnerable to 44 THE MARKET PLACE
hazardous weight practices. It makes you pay attention to the wrong thing: While your eye is on the scale, your hair could be falling out, your friendships straining, your concentration shot. This is the process to reach a "healthy" weight? Why not go for the better life by working directly on the things that matter to you and let your weight do whatever it does? 3 If you are not "weight neutral," you might be perpetuating the myth that you can "read" a person's character from the size of her body. This is a form of prejudice in which we are all well-schooled. You might be perpetuating this myth on yourself as well, associating "good" traits with thinness and the "bad" ones with fatness. In fact, all of us are capable of a whole range of behaviours regardless of our sizes. 4 Weight neutrality frees up all the money you spend on attempts to change weight. Go ahead and add it up: How much have you spent on diets, diet products, multiple wardrobes in different sizes, clothes that you've never worn, hardly used gym memberships, and so on? 5 Weight neutrality frees up all the time and energy you spend on attempts to change weight. Think about all the obsessing about weight (for yourself and others) and think how you could harness it for what really matters. 6 Being weight neutral allows you to "keep your eyes on the prize": Developing the skills you need to be resilient and flexible in the face of life's demands and opportunities. How effective a person are you allowing yourself to be if retaining water ruins your day? How satisfying can such a day be to you? 7 It makes you feel free, free, free! Free of the industries which want your money, that promise to cure your insecurities, that don't really want to offer a product that works because then you wouldn't keep coming back to spend more money to cure your insecurities... you get the picture. 8 It allows you to appreciate the wonders of this body you occupy. 9 It allows you to appreciate the wonders of other people whose bodies are not "perfect." 10 It's more fun. Free your body and your mind will follow!

This year Molly returned The Costa Animal Society (CAS) held its annual dog show to Scruffs with her owner Katrinka and she captured The Scruffs on October 14 at the Jackie Memorial Cup for the Plaza de España in Nerja. Also, a big thank you to our main sponsor Veterinary Clinic San Fernando whose support for CAS runs all the year round. All told, CAS took in E2588 on the day, a great success. Of course, all money raised at Scruffs goes directly to aiding our rescue animals, primarily to cover vet bills and kennelling costs. HAMISH AND DOUGAL A member of the public was approached by a homeless man in Nerja and was asked to hold his dogs while he went to the toilet. However the man never returned. After looking after the dogs for a few weeks the lady decided to hand them over to APA. Dougal in Sweden
They were named Hamish and Dougal and captured everyone’s hearts straight away. We knew it wouldn't take them long to find their forever homes. On 9th October both went to their forever homes, Dougal to Sweden and Hamish stayed local and went to Maro. Both have settled into their new homes beautifully and on 14th October Hamish won Best in Show at the CAS Scruffs Dog Show! 50 THE MARKET PLACE
Monday: Ok it's Monday again and volunteer walkers at the APA shelter will be arriving soon. I enter to a chorus of hellos from the dogs but they soon settle down again and then who bounds over but Malchic, who has once again escaped his pen! I harness him up and the other volunteers begin to arrive. It was very busy getting the dogs out, finding their harnesses and leads and distributing the dogs amongst the walkers. We walked en mass to the beach which is great now the weather is cooler. Then back again to the shelter to put the dogs away.
TAIL TORROX We, and all other charities, often bang on about being in need of voluntary helpers. I don’t know whether the same applies to the others but Tail doesn’t pay any wages for this help. Indeed nobody at Tail receives any renumeration. We believe that all the donations we receive have been made with the intention of helping the dogs and covering the costs involved in doing such work.
LOLO - GOLFING CHAMPION!
Lolo is a small 8 year old Yorkshire Terrier handed over to APA by his owner. He had kennel cough and was quite poorly but with care he has recovered as best as an 8 year old dog can. You may have read about Lolo when he was first adopted by Debbie and Graeme Birch and now Lolo has found his new love in life – GOLF and goes three times a week with his Dad to play taking pride of place on the front seat of the golf buggy to go round the course. He must be a good luck charm because this week Lolo and his Dad won a trophy. Rescue dogs have great lives !
RUBIO’S REQUESTS – “TALK TO THE PAW” Yay! The Sheds have all been repaired and all our food is secure – Wednesday: I’m off to the shelter again, same as Monday, thanks to the guys at I was greeted by Malchic who Equipo A – has climbed up and over the amazing work! The volunteers in the Refuge tend to be younger idealistic folk who have a heart of gold. Very little is too much for them, they rarely clock watch and frequently don’t bother about days off. Mostly, although of all nationalities, they tend to get on very well amongst themselves. Add the extra help that is forthcoming from a few older volunteers who live on the coast, or are seasonal volunteers, and who provide an essential continuity in the way Tail requires things to be done, and you have a fairly smooth operation working nearly all day seven days a week. We also rely so much on the walkers who daily turn up to take the dogs for a decent constitutional which as well as exercising them gives them lead training and human contact. If you feel you would be able to help get in touch with Gill on 633405560 or Audrey on 642057944. Our two shops require greater numbers of people, ideally three persons each six days a week but mornings only. That could mean up to thirty six volunteers but thankfully some so enjoy the camaraderie and the contact with a cross section of the public that they undertake multiple shifts. There is no requirement for you to have ever worked in a shop previously, as long as you feel that you can interact with customers with a smile on your face you’ll pick it up fast. If you’d like to give it a try, we’d like to have you; –contact Jean on 629469445. Overall that means around fifty people look after the interests of our rescued and abandoned dogs. Are you able to help? Remember : Tail’s Autumn Dog Show, 4th Nov, Romeria Ground, Torrox Costa, by the river, entrance from Avenida El Faro.

Nerja
was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela
is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

La Herradura
nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
