Guide to Visiting Paris - Part 1

Day Trip from Paris to Mont Saint Michel

It’s hard not to love Paris. The city has long been a muse for artists and writers, inspired revolutionaries and visionaries and provided a colourful setting for countless books, music and movies. By Jessica Infantino Trumble

Y

ear after year, Paris remains one of the most visited cities in the woprld, and for good reason. Its historic charm is undeniable (the streets, the river and those gorgeous rooftops!) yet there’s a refreshing sense of modernity that pulses through the city, along with some of the best art, architecture and food you’ll find anywhere. There’s so much to take in that even after multiple trips I still felt like I haven’t experienced all Paris has to offer. It remains one of my favourite cities and I’m happy to share these tips, recommendations and other insights from my collective visits in this snapshot guide. Bon voyage!

Getting There and Around Most visitors will arrive in Paris by plane or train and have several different options to reach the city centre. From Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) the RER B train is one of the fastest ways to get to central Paris (travel time is approximately 40 minutes) with stops at major stations including Gare du Nord, Châtelet-Les Halles and Saint Michel-Notre Dame, where you can connect with the metro, bus or walk to your final destination depending on where you’re staying. Note that the RER B requires a special ticket to travel from the airport (zone 5) to the city centre (zone 1), which you can purchase from any of the automated vending machines in the station. There are also several bus and shuttle options from the airport, as well as taxi or Uber for those who want to avoid public transportation with luggage and don’t mind paying a little more. If you’re travelling by train, there are 6 train stations throughout Paris that each serve different directions and routes throughout France and Europe. For example, Gare de Nord 8 THE MARKET PLACE

caters to northern destinations including the Eurostar to/from London. Pairs is neatly organized into 20 districts called arrondissements that spiral clockwise around the city with the Seine River running through the middle. Sights are sometimes referred to as being on the Rive Droite (Right Bank north of the river) or Rive Gauche (Left Bank south of the river), which may be helpful to know

when organizing your time. In terms of public transportation, Paris is well-connected via metro, bus, tram and RER trains, all of which use the same t+ ticket for travel within zone 1. Tickets are valid for 90 minutes (including transfers), and some stations require you to insert your ticket into the turnstile again to exit so be sure to hold onto them. While unlimited travel passes are available, the best option for moderate use is to purchase a book of 10 single ride tickets (called a carnet), which can be shared among everyone in your party and used as needed. Also, the Next Stop Paris app makes navigating public transportation super easy for visitors with a route finder, maps, ticket details and tons of other helpful information. Paris also has a great bike share program called Vélib’ if you’re feeling extra ambitious. Part of the charm of Paris is walking its streets, so one more general tip about getting around is to cluster your sightseeing into specific areas each day so you can take in the city’s beauty on foot.

What to See and Do You can spend a lifetime in Paris and never run out of things to see and do. First off there are the “big three” museums the Musée du Louvre for classical art housed in a former palace, the Musée d’Orsay for impressionist era works in an old train station-turnedmuseum and the Centre Pompidou for modern art in an eye-catching inside out building. There are also TONS of smaller museums ranging from the Musée Rodin (the man behind The Thinker) to the Musée de l’Orangerie (if you’re mad for Monet), Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine (history of Paris through its architecture), the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (for all things art and design), Musée de l’Armée (military museum plus Napoleon’s tomb at Les Invalides) and too many more to list.

Eifel Tower at Night - top, above left - Sacre Coeur and above right the Palais Garnier Opera House and below left Musee du Louvre.

the nearby Gothic jewel box of a church Sainte-Chapelle, the Arch de Triomphe (more great views of the city’s broad boulevards and organized street plan), the Sacré-Cœur basilica crowning the top of Montmartre and the Palais Garnier opera house (definitely book a guided tour even if you aren’t interested in seeing a show). If you’re on a budget there are also a ton of free things to see and do Beyond museums, there are countless iconic sights throughout Paris including throughout Paris – exploring beautiful parks and squares like the Tuileries near the Louvre, Jardin du Luxembourg (the perfect spot for a Parisian picnic…more Notre Dame (climb the cathedral’s on that in next month's issue), Place des Vosges or Palais-Royal, visiting the bell tower for beautiful city views and famous Père Lachaise Cemetery or strolling along the bridges and banks of the an up-close look at its gargoyles) and Seine River. Also, for first time visitors and/or if you plan on doing a lot of sightseeing, I highly recommend getting the Museum Pass. The pass comes in 2, 4 and 6-day options and provides free admission and the ability to skip the line at more than 50 museums and monuments throughout the Paris area. For sights not covered by the pass (i.e. the Eiffel Tower), you should definitely look into purchasing your tickets in advance to avoid waiting in long lines. If you want to venture outside of Paris, there are several great daytrip destinations to consider. One of the most popular is the Palace of Versailles (lavish residence and gardens of Louis XIV), which is an easy 45 minute ride on the RER C train. You can also visit Claude Monet’s house and gardens in Giverny in under an hour, or make the full-day trek to visit the dream-like abbey of Mont-Saint Michel in Normandy.

"Rocinante No Hay Camino" Photographic Exhibition

Photographic exhibition by the famous painter Jose Mareno Melguizo. The exhibition is held at the Centro Cultural Villa de Nerja and will run until the 18th November. He comments on his exhibition, "It's an idea, also a cloud, a tic to be closer, with sea and wind and another of a ship. One year, a flower, a smile in the shape of an emoji, a rainy day, then it leaves afternoon golden sun, mornings of seamist and the transparency, nights of bluish backgrounds and darkness that remind me of Gaspar David Friedrich in the most dark romanticism."

Exhibition in the Museum of Nerja - Caminos Cruzados until 11th November Fernando de la Rosa and Oliver designed an exhibition in which they searched for and found and now propose a profound dialogue between their respective works of art. Fernando has created sculptures in which the iron and the welding configure the necessary elements to realise a concept as shapes and structures. Oliver was the expert who knew how to satisfy the idea Fernando had envisioned with the components.

3rd Fuengirola Half Marathon - 4th November The 3rd Fuengirola Half Marathon 2018 is an officially approved race on a flat, tarmacked surface over a distance of 21,097 metres. Internet: How to choose the best tariff With over 200 different tariffs, multiple options and plenty of providers to choose from, finding the best tariff is not an easy task. Our guide on how to save on your internet bills has lots of handy tips.

Text provided by MoneySaverSpain.com

Fibre Or ADSL Broadband?

What Type of Internet Bundle is Best?

Fibre is better than ADSL as speeds are higher and it’s more reliable. But is your home covered?

Bundles can include one or more mobile lines, TV subscription (Netflix/HBO) and additional services.

Providers have rolled out fibre to cover a large part of the Spanish territory, but just because you live in a larger town doesn’t necessarily mean fibre will be available at your address.

Decide what you need and limit your search to those packages you will actually use. Introductory offers are very attractive to get you to sign up for additional services, but once you start paying the normal price you may regret your bundle choice.

Before you start comparing tariffs, check with neighbours to see which company they use and check Spanish internet provider websites (with your postcode) to see if fibre reaches your home.

With fibre, bundles tend to be better value. For ADSL you may be able to find a cheaper option with separate contracts.

Who’s Responsible For The Installation?

Landline use is reducing year upon year, in Spain it’s currently less than 5 minutes per day per line. And yet the majority of providers still insist on including the 20E (approx.) monthly landline charge.

Seems an obvious question, right? However from experience it’s not so easy. New contracts include what providers term a “normal installation”, with a limit on the metres of cable included. Anything additional to the basic amount will be charged on your first bill. Full details are included in the small print when you contract the service. My story: I decided to contract fibre but the installer was unable to pass the cable through our existing conduit. Why? Turned out that a previous owner had filled it with cement! Solving this problem would be quite expensive, as I would be footing the bill, so it looks like I’m sticking with ADSL.

What Upload/Download Speed Will I Get? Fibre speeds are as advertised, but if you have to use ADSL beware of the advertised speeds. With current legislation companies are not forced to meet a minimum percentage of the maximum speeds shown on their websites. Most only guarantee 10% of the contracted speed, thereby avoiding claims for breach of contract. The further your home is from the exchange, the slower the speed. A distance of up to 1 km means that a contracted 30 MB broadband package should generally deliver around 25 MB. You can test the upload and download speed, but only once it’s installed. Take a look at Test de Velocidad. 14 THE MARKET PLACE

Do I Have To Contract a Landline?

If you never use a landline consider opting for an internet-only contract with PepePhone, Lowi or Orange.

Which is the Best Deal? As we said at the beginning of this article, with over 200 tariffs that change regularly, special promos, introductory offers and changing technology it’s a question that’s almost impossible to answer. The independent comparison tool, offered by Spanish Consumer Organisation OCU, is occasionally available for the general public (at other times access is limited to OCU members). A comprehensive list of tariffs can be found on ADSLZone and Xataca. You could also use Rastreator or Kelisto, however remember that these companies may promote links, so you need to double check that it’s really the best option for your needs.

How to renovate a property of less than 60m² Small homes can be charming no matter how tiny they are. With some clever renovation, small homes can be made to appear bigger, or at the very least look more roomy and organised. 1. Expand the Kitchen We cannot deny that cooking in a large kitchen is always more pleasant and comfortable. In addition to having more storage space, there is the possibility to have more appliances. But what can you do with a really small house with a tiny kitchen? Simple - knock walls down! For example, if the kitchen is next to the dining or living area, an interesting reform would be to remove the walls to make the kitchen more functional and spacious. This reform will allow more enjoyment by creating a multifunctional area with the kitchen and dining area becoming

one large space instead of two separate smaller spaces. Thus we take advantage of all the square metres available.

2. An unused Balcony or Gallery Well, maybe you do use this are of the house but it can always be put to better use. A gallery for example, can join the area of the kitchen, allowing for a greater feeling of space. Another option could be to take advantage of a small balcony by placing a piece of furniture to gain more room in the house.

3. Innovative Custom Furniture To take advantage of very small corners or areas in your home, custom built furniture can be the answer. It will integrate naturally with the walls and offer a lot more extra space to store everything from books to decorative items. Bespoke furniture can be made to fit the nooks and crannies or quirky parts of your home, that is the beauty of it and it can be included in any part of your home from a shelf in the living room, to custom furniture for the bathroom or a custom cabinet for the hallway or something to fit under the stairs. Approach your local carpenter for ideas. 16 THE MARKET PLACE

4. Open the Hall Older house planning often gave halls a lot more prominence as an independent room, but in more modern times the needs have changed, there is not so much space blocked away from the rest of the house. The trend is clear, open plan areas with minimal partitioned areas which allow more light and space, this can be especially beneficial in small spaces and gain visual meterage.

5. Mobile Partition Walls Open plan spaces are an excellent solution for small homes but if you still feel you need separate rooms then how about creating a mobile partition wall. They are a wall that can be opened and closed on hinges according to your needs.

6. Take Advantage of Terraces or Gardens

The Nerja Players

When a house is short on square metres but has the advantage of a garden or terrace area, why not turn this into an indoor room instead? A technical project would have to be implemented but turning a terrace into a covered room using glass curtains is entirely possible. The reform may be a little more expensive but it would gain meterage in the home and the added area would improve quality of life and possibly increase the value of your home.

November 20th A Fun Evening with Shakespeare "The Rude Mechanicals" Hamlet, Othello - you don't expect The Bard to be a bundle of laughs, but director, Joan Tarver, promises a hilarious experience with her adaptation of scenes from Shakespeare's best-loved comedy, "A Midsummer Night's Dream". A victorious Thesues is about to marry Hippolyta, defeated Queen of the Amazons. Feisty fairies bicker and plot and cause no end of trouble for the Rude Mechanicals - this band of singularly untalented amateurs - as they rehearse a play they hope to perform to celebrate the forth coming nuptials. Will rival factions reconcile their differences? Can Bottom the Weaver succeed in his bid for stardom? Come and enjoy the fun and frolics on Tuesday, 20th November! We meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday during the months of October through March. Our doors open at 6:45 PM. The Nerja Players are a group of like-minded people who have an interest in theatre and the performing arts and who regularly perform rehearsed readings of plays and other material on club nights at the premises of the Nerja Bridge Club, Calle Castille Perez 1. Car News

First Driving Impressions: Vauxhall Combo Life UK Press Event, Wetherby. This all-new Combo Life has, as Vauxhall told us, been introduced to replace the Zafira Tourer, which has now been discontinued. This is probably due to the fact that the Zafira was based on a GM platform and now with Vauxhall being part of PSA, then things have to change. No more GM connections, and more sharing with PSA...

T

he Combo Life is brother to the Citroen Berlingo Multispace and the Peugeot Rifter, previously known as the Partner Tepee. Although I haven’t driven the Citroen or Peugeot versions, I would imagine they are pretty similar to drive and build quality will be the same. Up in Wetherby I drove the Combo Life Energy fitted with a 1.5-litre 130ps Turbo diesel. There is a 1.2 petrol also available which I guess will be powerful and quiet. The engine I drove is refined and smooth and coupled to a very nice 6-speed manual gearbox. An 8-speed auto is due soon, and this will be a great combination. The 1.5 diesel goes from 0-60mph in 10.6 seconds, has a top speed of 115mph and its C02 emissions are 113g/km. It has a combined fuel consumption figure of 65.7 mpg. The Combo Life is, in reality a van with windows, and generally called a Car Derived Van, or CDV as we used to call them. It will be seen by many as a van with windows but it is much more than that, and calling it a CDV is really doing it a bit of a disservice. This type of vehicle has come on leaps and bounds over the past few years and they are much more luxurious than ever before. They are also fully loaded with a stack of standard equipment. The Energy model that I drove has a great long list of standard specification, and everything you could possibly need. The Combo Life is available in either 20 THE MARKET PLACE

standard wheelbase or a longer wheelbase, with either having the option on most models of five or seven seats. The car I drove was a standard WB with five seats, so had a good amount of storage space - so the LWB will have masses of space. A few days later, after being on this event, I went to Malaga with the family, and at the cars rental desk the lady saw that we had quite a bit of luggage and offered for the same price as the VW Golf (or similar) a Mercedes Benz Citan MPV. And a good job she did too – four adults, one toddler, one child seat, four suitcases, one pushchair, five pieces of hand luggage, so as you can imagine, plenty of people and luggage. We travelled to and from the airport to the apartment in real comfort and luxury. This was putting the car to the ultimate test and in a real-life situation, and it coped perfectly and did exactly what it was designed to do. Back to Wetherby, and the Combo Life. The sliding rear doors, that most of this type of vehicle have, slide easily, are smooth and easy to operate, and are much better designed and more robust than ever before. They don’t feel like they are going to come off the runners any time soon, much improved. The interior feels solid and up to a high standard throughout and very car-like, which I suppose is how it was designed. There will be plenty of people who like the idea of this type of vehicle with

plenty of room for luggage, goods and people and the fact they can have the option of seven-seats, and all the practicality and flexibility it offers. But they just cannot justify to themselves, and more likely to their friends, families and especially neighbours that they are running around in a CDV - or van with windows. When testing the Vauxhall in Yorkshire I couldn’t really appreciate just how useful it would be, but the real-life test of a similar vehicle in Southern Spain showed off all the benefits of this clever car. The car I drove on the test drive event cost £22,660. Not cheap, but a lot of car (or van) for the money. The Mercedes Benz actually changed my mind about the Vauxhall, and showed just how good this type of car is….so practical, so versatile, so much space, but prospective buyers will have to get over the hurdle that these types of vehicles are vans with windows, and that is going to be a problem for many. There are so many other fantastic SUV’s with similar space that are better looking, have nicer lines and arguably a more refined interior. But for those who want a great allrounder, that does exactly what it is supposed to do, then the Combo Life will fulfil all the requirements.

Local News Local News Local News Local News Nerja indoor swimming pool continues to be closed Despite the actions taken since the closure of the indoor pool back in April it has still been recommended that the pool remains closed after a technical report confirmed that there is now deterioration to the wooden side panels of the roof. These panels are in an advanced state of deterioration and as a result people could not use the pool with the guarantee of being safe. The work that has already been carried out since April has been to the ceilings of the changing rooms, the installation of a new non slip floor, new aluminium doors to the pool, new pillars in the pool and PVC plates in the entrance corridors.

Five year old drowned in pool A five year old boy died recently in a swimming pool on Avenida Rodriguez Acosta in Nerja. The emergency services were called to the incident after the accident occured at around 6pm on a Wednesday last month. A witness confirmed that a child under five years old had been taken from the water and was unconscious and not breathing. The emergency services tried to revive him on arrival but were not successful and he died at the scene.

The Paseo de Los Carabineros Closed for 16 years to the public One of the most peculiar and charming pedestrian promenade walks on the entire coastline has been inaccessible to the public for 16 years. The Paseo de los Carabineros, which runs between the beach of Calahonda, at the foot of the Balcon de Europa and that of Carabeillo, at the Westernmost point of Burriana remains closed to the public ever since 2002 due to the danger of rockfalls. However the pathway is still very crowded, as it has become a refuge for the homeless who settle between the coves with their tents and umbrellas, often leaving a trail of rubbish, which generates complaints from neighbours. The Council try to clean it every so often but cannot seem to find a permanent solution to the problem. The reopening of the path would help this problem but at the Carabeillo end there have been recent landslides. There is the possibility of reopening the first section at the Calahonda side which business people from Nerja wish to do since they realise the current situation generates a negative image for one of the most popular tourist areas in the province. 22 THE MARKET PLACE

Torrox reduces financial debt to zero recommending for years that all activities Torrox's Town Council has settled it's financial debt and now from October has zero debt. This was announced on 24th October by the mayor of Torrox, Oscar Medina and the first deputy mayor Paola Moreno. The deputy mayor confirmed that a loan had been repayed early because of the surplus in last years accounts which was 3.6 million euros and shows the good state of accounts in the municipality thanks to the economic management of the government team. Medina also confirmed that the surplus allowed them to settle the debt that was inherited from the previous socialist government with Aqualia the Water Company.

Nerja Caves takes first step towards creating an outdoor auditorium The Caves of Nerja Foundation took its first step for the construction of an open air auditorium on the 18th October with the intial approval being made by the Plenary Board, who met at the headquarters of the Government Sub Delegation in order to approve the contract for the preliminary design. The sub delegate of the government in Malaga, Maria Gamez who is also the president of the Caves of Nerja Foundation, presided over the plenary session and proposed that the future cultural space be named Manuel de Campo, who collaborated in the organisation of the International Festival of Music and Dance since its beginning. The construction of the auditorium has been welcomed, since the Institute of Scientific Research have been

take place outdoors. The manager of the Cave of Nerja also commented that it was essential to have an auditorium to house all the cultural activites that are programmed by the foundation. The future building which will be in the upper parking area will be around 4,000 square metres near where the festivals open air shows are held.

Aqualia says water that it supplies is Potable. Aqualia, the company that supplies and services the water in the municipality of Velez Malaga, have assured in a statement that the water they supply to residents is potable. According to Aqualia, the local water is subject to a strict set of quality controls in accordance with current sanitary regulations. It has also indicated that it performs more than 170 analytical tests per year to certify its potability. The company has made this statement after the announcement recently by the political group IU to move to the Ombudsman complaints about the abundance of lime in the water.

4.4 Million Euro flu jab campaign in southern Spain In mid October the Health Authorities began their annual vaccination campaign in our area. It is aimed at protecting those most at risk from the flu this winter. Around 1.35 million doses of the vaccination were reserved ahead of the campaign, a 10% increase from last year. The flu jab campaign will run until December and will offer the chance to be vaccinated against pneumococcus, one of the bacterias that leads to pneumonia. The flu jab is aimed at people aged over 65 and those people are encouraged to visit their doctor or a vaccination point. Being vaccinated is one of the best ways to prevent diseases, especially in those that are most vunerable.

The Arts Society Nerja (Formerly Nerja NADFAS) VELÁZQUEZ AND THE GOLDEN AGE OF SPANISH PAINTING Tuesday November 13th 2018 The Cultural Centre (Casa Cultura) Calle Granada, Nerja. 6pm (Doors open at 5pm and tickets only available on the night) Visitors are most welcome. Entrance E10 (Members of other The Arts Societies E5) A full illustrated lecture in English by Siân Walters MA (Cantab) Sponsored by La Caixa Bank The 17th century is known as the Golden Age of Spanish Art, a period in which the country was able to use its vast wealth, accumulated during the 1500s following the expansion of its territories in Europe and the Americas, to fund extravagant and ambitious programmes of building and painting. At the helm of the country’s artistic patronage was King Philip IV, one of the greatest collectors of art throughout Europe. His well-honed instinct for talent drew him to the young, brilliant Diego Velázquez who would become his court painter, recording his likeness and that of his family for over 30 years. Velazquez soon became internationally recognised as the greatest artist of his generation, praised for his ability to capture a sitter’s personality or mood and admired for his mysterious, varied and often provocative subjects and interpretations. Many of his paintings are deliberately enigmatic, creating heated debate even today. This lecture will trace the rise of his glittering career at one of the most illustrious courts in Europe.

CHARLES DICKENS - THE MAN AND HIS LIFE THROUGH HIS CHARACTERS Tuesday November 27th 2018 The Cultural Centre (Casa Cultura) Calle Granada, Nerja. 6pm (Doors open at 5pm and tickets only available on the night) Visitors are most welcome. Entrance E10 (Members of other The Arts Societies E5) A full illustrated lecture in English by Bertie Pearce BA (Hons) Sponsored by Avalon Funeral Plans 2012 was the bicentenary of the birth of Charles John Huffam Dickens. He brought into the world a staggering array of wonderful characters with orphans, starving children, misers, murderers and abusive school teachers among them. People such as Mr Mcawber, Fagin and Abel Magwitch remain in one's literary psyche long after the books are put down. Largely self-educated, Dickens posessed the genius to become the greatest writer of his age with 15 major novels and countless short stories and articles. In this lecture Bertie Pearce looks at the life and places of Dickens while interspersing the events with readings of his works. A truly Dickensian experience.

Health, Body & Soul Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle

The reason why you get worse colds than other people

Experts warn about mixing vitamins with medication Many of us take supplements as a way to boost our health. Many of us also take prescribed medication for health conditions, or over-the-counter painkillers on a regular basis. Whilst it may seem like the easiest way to get your dose of pills is to take them all at the same time, an alarming new study published in the British Journal of General Practice has warned that mixing some herbal remedies with prescription medication can lead to serious health risks. Researchers from the University of Hertfordshire questioned 149 patients over the age of 65 who were taking at least one prescribed medication. Patients who were undergoing treatment for health problems such as type 2 diabetes, overactive thyroid, and high blood pressure, noted they were taking between one and 18 prescription drugs. 44 per cent of the female participants and 22 per cent of male participants admitted they were regularly using herbal remedies or supplements. The scientists pinpointed six “hazardous” combinations, which saw an increase in bleeding, raise in blood sugar levels, and interfered with the prescribed medication’s effectiveness. The study found people with high blood pressure who also took St John’s wort – believed to improve sleep – were significantly reducing the effectiveness of the medication when taken at the same time. Additionally, omega-3 fish oil combined with beta-blockers posed dangerous health risks and led to a reduction in blood pressure. It is also important to note that in many cases, the foods and drinks taken alongside supplements and medications can dramatically affect how the body absorbs them. While all drugs have the potential for food, herb or supplement interactions, the most likely culprits are anticoagulants, sedatives, antidepressants, and medicines prescribed to treat heart problems, high blood pressure and epilepsy.

There are certain things we adore about the cold weather: a mug of hot chocolate, big woolly jumpers.... Give me a glass of red by a roaring fire any day. But then there are things we are much less fond of, and getting sick is one of them. It's true that you can do all the right things - dose up on Vitamin C, get enough sleep, drink plenty of water - and yet, still be struck down. Most of us tend to be walloped by the common cold at least once or twice a year. But the annoying thing is some of us tend to feel the blow worse than others. Somehow the people around you, despite braving the same elements, tend to bounce back much quicker or avoid it all together, while you're laying there feeling like you're on death row. It makes no sense! Right? Well actually, it might. According to a new study, there might be a scientific reason why you might suffer worse cold symptoms than your significant other, colleague or best pal. And it all comes down to the yummy word: bacteria. Researchers at the University of Virginia recently have investigated how the bacteria in your nose can correspond with the severity of your cold symptoms. And what they found is that people whose noses contain more Staphylococcus bacteria are more likely to have more acute

cold symptoms than those whose noses contain less. Basically, this is because the organisms living inside your nose can exacerbate your symptoms by affecting how much of the virus you can expel from your nose, according to the study published in the journal Scientific Reports. Dr Ronald Turner, a paediatric infectious disease specialist, who spearheaded the research, found he was able to divide the 152 participants into six different "buckets" depending on the types of bacteria found in their noses. "The first surprise was that you can kind of identify these different buckets that people kind of fit into, and then the fact that the buckets seem to have some impact on how you respond to the virus and how sick you get was also interesting," he says. "There were effects on virus load and how much virus you shed in your nasal secretions". "So the background microbiome, the background bacterial pattern in your nose, had influences on the way that you reacted to the virus and how sick you got." However, researchers also noted that other factors can also play a part in the severity of your symptoms. "What we’re reporting is an association, so it’s entirely possible that the fact that you have staph in your nose and you have more symptoms is not directly related," Dr Turner says.

I get mouth ulcers. Is there anything I can take to help them heal? To relieve pain and hasten healing, suck on a zinc and vitamin C lozenge every two hours. If the ulcers are extremely painful, for instant (but temporary) relief, make a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water and pack it on the ulcer. Sucking on an antacid tablet will have a similar effect. Instead, choose cooling foods such Physical trauma to the mouth can also as watermelon, pears, cucumber and precipitate an outbreak – for example, lettuce. If the ulcers make it too painful braces, chewing the inside of the cheek to chew, try smoothies, pureed soups and over-enthusiastic tooth-brushing. and vegetable juices. Acidophilus Anything spicy or acidic will hurt. yoghurt is both calming and healing.

Fascinating Fascia

by Knud Byrjalsen, Chiropractic & Myofascial Clinic, Nerja.

It has been a while since l last wrote in Market Place magazine about the fascia; the Cinderella of Orthopedic Medicine, the treatment of which is breaking new ground all the time. I have had it implemented as a major element in the treatment of musculoskeletal problems together with conventional chiropractic treatment for over five years now. It took a bit of time to find out exactly how brilliant this new technique is and how clever this Italian physio is to have developed this incredible system.

created by the site of injury. This situation is at best a precarious one and one that can be disturbed by a mild new injury. A non-traumatic fall, or just stretching to get something.

FASCIA

This compensation will often be located quite a distance To sum up what fascia is, it really is the from the original injury, supporting structure of your whole body, and therefore difficult to and it has no borders from body part to spot if you are not looking body part, it is continuous throughout the for it. Each new injury or body. It is inside every muscle, continuous trauma demands a new with ligaments surrounding arteries and compensation, and in the end you run nerves. It is everywhere. When you buy a out of places where to compensate. This steak at the butcher, it is the white stuff you is when you get a pain that starts out of cut off and throw away. nowhere, for no reason at all, in an area Treating the 'software' and the 'hardware', you really have not hurt or damaged. That the fascia and the articulations, at the same could be gardenwork or even housework that has destabilized an old compensation time, in the same treatment. As l have and all hell is let loose. stated previously: if you want to move the tent, start by loosening the guywire......! So once l have collected the full history of injuries, operations, old sprains etc, l can However, as l have gained experience in go on to actually check the lady's right hip, this rather complicated technique and pelvis and leg for reduced movement or understood the principles thoroughly, pain on movement. the wonderful world of fascia has been According to where on the body l find revealed to me in its complexity and left the limitation of movement or the pain, me in awe of it all. there is a chart of the Fascial Manipulation Therefore l feel it important to share with model that will show me where the anchor you how this system works. It is a complex point is located that potentially could system to learn, and l still have to spend produce exactly that pain and which point hours most days to comprehend all the or points need to be examined more facets of it. Therefore it may also be a bit closely and maybe manipulated with a difficult for you to understand. But lets give special technique to eliminate it. This then it a try! has to be coordinated with the previous Here is an example of a typical complaint injury/injuries to establish a possible that can illustrate how it works: compensation pattern. A 65 year old lady comes into the clinic In other words, let's say the lady in complaining of a right sided hip pain that question in the past has had a sprained has been present for 8 months and giving ankle that was immobilized in plaster for daily pain and difficulty when walking an extended period. Then the ankle as well and when getting up from a chair. Before as the hip area need to be examined the starting the treatment of the problem, in same way to look for 'silent' fascial points Fascial Manipulation it is paramount to around the ankle area that potentially get a thorough history of any injuries or could contribute or perhaps even cause operations the person might have had, and the new hip problem. If l was to only also any previous pains in the past. This treat the hip, l would then only treat the is because it will often be the past trouble new compensation the body has recently that will reveal to me the cause of the activated, and not the original cause of present trouble! the new injury, and the hip pain would probably return if it ever got better. It is common for almost everybody The body has successfully compensated that has had a pain in the past that has for the supposedly healed ankle sprain, gone away again to assume that it just but when the lady did a bit of gardenwork disappeared by itself......This CAN be true she set off a muscle reaction because if the past injury had a complete recovery within a normal time frame, but very often of the unusual work position and the precarious compensation broke down and when an injury is present, or an operation has cut through the fascia, the body merely the pain started in the hip area further up finds a way to COMPENSATE for it, finding from the original ankle sprain. a way to counterbalance the tension According to the movement that gives pain 36 THE MARKET PLACE

in the supposedly healed ankle and the movement that gives pain in the hip, l am able to deduce which fascial point or points has/have been insulted. On the fascial chart on my wall all anchor points related to these movements l have just examined are illustrated and easy to find on the lady's hip and ankle areas. The points that cause the pain in the hip will be identical to the points that in the past prevented the ankle to heal properly after the plaster had come off years before. These points will be tender to touch and they will be locally thickened and rigid. Then all l have to do is to manipulate these points, sometimes up to several minutes, till the temperature increases in them to above 40 degrees and the connective tissue ( fascial restriction) contracture or densification starts to dissolve and go back to its normal elasticity. Fascial contracture changes with prolonged manipulation and reverts back to its normal state. What happens in the painful site, the hip, is that the tension that created the pain will be reduced or disappear since the fascial lump in the ankle area and the other point that was densified in the hip area have now been mobilized and regained its elasticity and thereby removing the painful tension. The points will be inflamed on purpose, since inflammation, when controlled, is actually a healing process. They will be sore for up to 48 hours, and then the hip pain will subside and so will the nonhealed ankle regain its full range of motion. Untreated, a person could take years to recover from pain generated by fascial densification. This is because fascial turnover, meaning the time it will take for fascial restriction to repair itself is extremely slow. This is the reason why Fascial Manipulation is so incredibly efficient when applied correctly by knowledgeable hands...!

Random Rhymes by Tim Bush I recently stumbled across this little cracker of a book of random rhymes by local man, Tim Bush. Tim has made his rhymes into a book which he is selling to raise money for the charity Cudeca. Tim moved to Spain after he retired and he now spends his time growing vegetables, watching football, exploring the beautiful countryside in Spain and writing his poetry. I must admit many of his rhymes made me laugh particularly this one about "europe" which I just had to share with you. With all the uproar and controvosy Brexit is causing I think that lots of people are now fed up to death of it and wish someone would just make the problem go away whether you originally voted remain or leave!

Are we staying in, Or are we getting out, I wish I knew, what the hell, This talk is all about.

Like a man stood at the crossroads, Not sure which way to go, The answer is quite simple, I simply do not know.

Weighing up the pro's and con's, The arguments are fought, The experts drone on endlessly, A hundred schools of thought.

Why have a referendum, With all the anger it can cause? I suggest that we just flip a coin, And see which way it falls.

Is it for the business? Or is it for our pride? Sometimes the English Channel, Seems very, very wide.

With our future spinning in the air, Bags I'm the one to shout, "Heads we're staying in, Tails we're getting out".

Tim's book costs just 4 euros - Contact us at the Marketplace if you would like a copy. All proceeds go to Cudeca. 40 THE MARKET PLACE

Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

This month opens new realms of communication and heightening personal expression, as it will eventually lead to success. If you stay true to your values and beliefs, you get a little closer to your goal. Relationships would be consistent this month. This month finds you beginning to focus on a special relationship in earnest; it will either be very romantic or very combative. You need to be very clear on your priorities and where you want to invest your time and energy. Be careful not to let work overwhelm you. It is also the time to reach for your desires and your dreams. This period may usher in a cycle of social or romantic activity that will see the return of people from the past or past situations.

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)

Overall, there is a very hard-working and conscientious energy that is present in your life at this time. You would be self-sufficient both financially and emotionally, as you often equate money with emotional security. It is a good time to cement a partnership, relationship or friendship and to fall back on your natural diplomacy to bring about peaceful agreements and come out on top. This period brings new creative or recreational activities. Some may find romance with an unusual individual. Others may enter a new phase of an established romance through new activities. This is a good time for pursuing some artistic endeavours, or for making room for a special someone in your home. Be sure to count your change; money matters could get away from you this month.

This would be an encouraging period. If you continue to work toward the fulfilment of your dreams and do not allow disillusionment to dampen your enthusiasm, ultimately you will experience prosperity and success in your goals. There would be however a tendency to be distracted by day-to-day affairs and general busyness, so prioritising your activities and carefully managing your time is essential.

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

This is an emotionally volatile time for you. Your emotions may need physical expression. There will be surprises and deep feeling. A domestic or emotional situation may be changed or reversed. This is a phase where you're looking inward and seeking a new personal truth. There will be change with work, health, the spiritual search and education that will alter the road on which you travel.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

This period indicates abundance in all areas of your life. You would feel blessed and deserving of everything that comes your way. You would be financially stable and secure with solid investments. It is a wonderful time for teaching and learning and exchanging visits with siblings and friends. You’ll be far more sensitive to the needs of others, and more willing to stifle yourself to be sociable.

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

This period is wonderful for your creativity, and you find yourself doing a lot of innovative work. You would be very protective of what you have accumulated over time, and slowly and steadily you increase your net worth through saving money and safe investments although there can be some major expenses that soak up the excess, so remember your budget. You need to find yourself some quiet time. 42 THE MARKET PLACE

The period will bring news and surprising events or developments. There may be potent encounters with others. There would be magnetism in romance. Singles fascinate all around them with their allure, while the coupled up captivate their sweeties anew. Through diligence, responsibility and attention to detail you will achieve great things and can finally say that you have completed your task or attained your goal. You need to protect your boundaries as much as you can because that’s going to help you do a little bit more self-nurturing. Make sure that you do have the time to invest in yourself. You might be so busy taking care of your family, your work colleagues and your friends, bypassing your own needs. In the last week, you'll be bright and sparkling again with plenty to say.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

You’ll be quite intent on making a name for yourself. You’ll do a fine job of it, and you’ll be acknowledged for your efforts. Home, career, relationships, all seem to be going well and moving along at a fast pace. You will have the opportunity to connect with a soul-mate or a situation which elevates and energizes you. You finish out the month with warm and intense family connections.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

Your creative side is showing well and your teaching and counseling skills are at a peak now. Work should be very fulfilling though, and this is a good time to get some recognition there bringing new or unusual people, ideas, encounters or forms of business or communication. You may have some relationship difficulties erupting, so be ready for them. The crisis is likely to involve freedom or control issues.

Nutrigenomics: Future or Fad? The Human Genome Project, completed in 2003, laid the groundwork for scientific research on the environment’s influence on gene expression. This led to the increased popularity of nutrigenomics, the field of discovery about how environmental factors, such as food intake and lifestyle, influence gene expression. Through ongoing studies, researchers and health professionals are learning more about how food affects gene interactions. Further, the differences in genes among people affects nutrient requirements, metabolism and the response to nutrition and dietary interventions, necessitating personalised recommendations. For example, common variants in genes regulating homocysteine metabolism have been linked to blood folate and homocysteine levels, possibly influencing cardiovascular disease risk and neural tube defects. Single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs, are small changes in DNA sequencing that result in genetic variations, such as in the vitamin D receptor gene which can alter vitamin D availability. An SNP has been linked to a predisposition for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with low calcium intake. Much research surrounds weight and obesity as they relate to genes and lifestyle. Studies indicate that 40 percent to 70 percent of variability between individuals in body mass index may be attributed to genetic factors. In the future, genetic testing may become routine for specific dietary advice for weight loss. A 2014 paper stated that nutritional genomics provides insight into how diet and genotype interactions affect phenotype. Proponents believe health care can be improved if practitioners can provide nutrition recommendations that are more personalised than population guidelines, based on genetic profile, phenotype, health status, food preferences and environmental factors. However, because gene expression is constantly interacting with the changing environment, it is not possible to counsel patients using genetic information alone. For example, someone could have a variant in the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, or MTHFR, gene but have normal 44 THE MARKET PLACE

homocysteine levels, or vice versa. A mutation in a single gene can result in a specific disorder, but chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes are related to many genes. Clients should be educated on how their genes interact with their environment and dietary and lifestyle choices.

is polygenic, involving several genes and environmental interactions that are affected by lifestyle behaviours. People genetically predisposed to obesity can maintain a normal BMI through appropriate diet and physical activity which can be personalised with the help of an RDN.

Regulation and Areas of Research

Although evidence is strong for some gene-diet associations, others remain unclear, which is one reason why the implementation of nutrigenomics remains controversial. Some health care professionals argue that nutrigenomics is not ready for clinical use. Others are practicing outside of what current research supports. It is inappropriate and perhaps unsafe to counsel patients on changing their diets or lifestyles based on genetics without considering individual clinical biomarkers, dietary and lifestyle preferences and ability to make changes. Because of the complexity of the interaction between genes and environmental factors and the hundreds of genes that play a role in chronic disease, it may never be possible to prescribe a specific diet based on genetics alone.

In 2005, the International Society of Nutrigenetics, or ISNN, was founded to regulate the field and increase the understanding of the role of genetic variation and dietary response. Regulation is necessary to protect consumers and health care professionals alike. For example, it could be considered unethical for a registered dietitian nutritionist to counsel a patient on genetics that are medical in nature and do not have a nutrition or lifestyle connection. Women may inquire about testing for the breast cancer susceptibility genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2), but this type of counseling should be referred to a medical geneticist who can interpret risk and discuss treatment options or surgery based on the individual’s needs. According to the Academy’s 2014 position paper, several single gene mutations have been linked to severe obesity but only in a fraction of the population. The various fat mass- and obesity-associated genes, or FTOs, have the strongest known effect on adiposity and obesity risk. People with a specific FTO gene variant have been shown to weigh an average of 3 kilos more and were nearly two times more likely to be obese than those without the variant. Studies show a stronger positive correlation between FTO and obesity among individuals with higher intakes of sugar-sweetened beverages and fried foods compared to those with lower intakes. Some research has shown high-protein, hypocaloric diets consumed by participants with FTO variants caused reduced food cravings and appetite scores. However, obesity

Controversy in Nutrigenomics

Role of the RDN Registered dietitian nutritionists must obtain basic competency in genetics before entering the field of nutrigenomics. To personalise medical nutrition therapy and analyse disease risk, RDNs must use reliable testing methods and consider factors that affect genetic mutations. Family history, biochemical parameters and lifestyle risk factors still should be used when personalising dietary interventions when working with nutritional genomics. In the future, RDNs may be able to interpret nutrigenomics to make more personalised nutrition recommendations and help promote increased client understanding and motivation to change.

Local animal charities C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) HAPPY TALES

HUMPHREY Humphrey is a prime example of why groups such as the Costa Animal Society (CAS) and other animal charities are essential for helping needy animals in our area. He was found in the campo by a Spanish man about 2 years ago and it was thought he had been abandoned by hunters. The man contacted CAS and Humphrey was placed in kennels where he has lived ever since. During that time he had not been adopted despite his bright and playful personality because there are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of Podencos looking for homes at any given time in Andalucia. Humphrey’s luck finally arrived when he was chosen by a wonderful lady in Sweden who had previously adopted another CAS dog last year. A flight partner volunteered to take Humphrey with her to Stockholm where he joined his new owner and CAS brother in his new forever home.

with children and other dogs. The vet thinks she has arthritis in her front elbows, which limits her mobility to short walks, but it seems to manifest itself mostly as stiffness in her joints. Lana is fully vaccinated and chipped but, unfortunately, her original owner has died and his family does not want her. The Costa Animal Society (CAS) hopes to find a place for Lana to live out her remaining years in comfort with caring people. She is currently in kennels.

READY FOR ADOPTION

never made it back to Spain so the brothers were housed in kennels. Ossian found a new home during the summer with a wonderful German family who live in Almunecar. Unfortunately, they could not take two dogs so Sebastian is still in kennels waiting to be adopted as well. He is a four year old Podenco cross who loves people and gets along great with other dogs but would not be good with cats. He is in fine health, chipped, fully vaccinated and castrated and would make a wonderful addition to any family. SIMBA

CAS CAT CORNER – COMMIE CATS!

NINA Nina was adopted at the beginning of the year by a kind English gentleman and was living a wonderful life near the beach after spending more than two years in kennels. Unfortunately, the gent was forced to return to England for medical reasons and could not take Nina with him. Nina is again being housed in kennels. Nina is a lovely small Podenco female with a sweet personality. She tends to become very attached to her family so the Costa Animal Society (CAS) believes it would be best to find her a home with other dogs where she can settle in among friends.

Simba is an older youngster who is coming up on his first birthday. Unfortunately, in this short time he has had three owners. Because Simba got off on the wrong paw in life he has not been given the proper training to correct certain puppy behaviours before they became issues. Simba loves to play with other dogs and is full of energy but as he matures he will settle into a calmer adult. He is a lovely dog who is very affectionate but he needs an owner with the confidence and patience to show Simba how to live in a home.

SEBASTIAN

Lana is a 10 year old Spanish Braca/Pointer type female who is a little unsteady on her legs but is otherwise healthy and a good natured dog. She was rescued by a Good Samaritan family more than six months ago who were only here for a limited stay and have now returned to their home country. The rescue family describes Lana as really lovely and easy to handle dog that is well educated, obedient and house trained. She gets along great 48 THE MARKET PLACE

TAIL TORROX It seems so long ago that Tail came into being after a gestation period of over a year, but in reality it's just approaching eight years. In that time we have grown beyond all recognition from those early days. For a start, running a refuge hadn't been entertained. We opened our first shop in the Avenida El Faro, Torrox Costa, to sell gifted clothes, books pictures and other bric-a-brack, with the intention of raising funds to neuter and medicate stray, feral and injured dogs. In retrospect, we had hardly settled down there than a site/ kennel business was offered to Tail which we took over and which is now our Refuge. Nobody has much detail from those very early days other than there were just five dogs in this cavernous greenhouse where today we house in kennels with runs around 60 dogs. It is impossible to guess at the number of strays there are wanting love and care, all we know is that for every dog which is found a home there are three, four, five even, who are waiting to come in. As it is, we know very well that notwithstanding the superb situation where the Refuge is situated we shall in the foreseeable future have to find larger premises elsewhere. This is not an easy task. Tail is thrilled to rehome between fifteen and thirty dogs most months, but the supply is never ending. Hopefully as children grow into young adults, have their own families in the prospering economy, they will come to feel as we do that no family is complete without a pet. We see much sign of this as a noticable number of dogs are being adopted by Spanish families, and we feel that if only we were able to undertake home checks further afield even more rescued dogs would be found a loving family. The pictures are of Anne and Jane who were rescued from rubbish bins in Torrox.

Don't forget that early in November, Sunday 4th, Tail is holding it's Autumn Dog Show at the Barco Chiringuito, Peñoncillo Beach on Torrox Costa. Do come along and support us - or better still enter your dog.

La Herradura

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Nerja

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people.
