Local News Local News Local News Inheritance Tax scrapped in Andalucia for properties under 1,000,000E
Inheritance tax for estates of less than 1 million euros has been scrapped in Andalucía where the beneficiary is a spouse, parent or child. The region has just approved its provisions for next year's budget, and the centre-right party Ciudadanos – governing the region in coalition with the socialists (PSOE) – put forward a motion to make life easier for bereaved family members. In fact, Ciudadanos said it would not vote in favour of the 2018 budget unless inheritance tax was abolished where the assets involved were worth less than 1m. Although the party said inheritance tax was 'basically a thing of the past' in Andalucía, it still applies to beneficiaries who are more distant relatives than immediate next of kin, and the full amount is payable where there is no blood relation. Inheritance tax has to be paid before the beneficiary is granted title to the assets, meaning they cannot sell a house inherited to settle the bill. This often leads to people refusing properties inherited from friends (and even, sometimes, family members) and handing them over to the State. But with this new ruling, 95% of beneficiaries in Andalucía will not have to pay inheritance tax, meaning a reduction in income for the region of 83m.
near the lighthouse in Torre del Mar. 500 competitors took part in the event, aged as young as 3 up to adults and seniors. The youngest atheletes went first at 8pm with a distance of 800 metres up and down the promenade - they were from 3 to 9 years old. Then afterwards came the youths, senior and veteran categories of 5,500 metres which was down to Caleta and back. The Sports Councillor praised the great party atmosphere that helped encourage everybody involved. She also thanked the local sports clubs that collaborated in the event. The winners in the Legua were Christian Segovia with a time of 17 mins and 50 seconds and in the female category, Teresa Velasco with a time of 22 minutes 44 seconds.
Cannon on the Mirador del Bendito in Nerja to undergo restoration
6 THE MARKET PLACE
On the 26th September in the Sala Mercado Nerja, the photographic exhibition for the election of Queen and Knight of the Feria of Nerja 2017 opened. Photos Guerrero, located on Calle Cruz Nerja, were responsible for the photographic collection, which have been taken in various locations. In past editions, the exhibition has always had lots of support during it's days open to the public. The Town Hall and the Festival Committee of Nerja encourage people to visit the photographic exhibition, which will run at the Sala Mercado from 26 September to 7 October (starting day of the Feria de Nerja 2017) from 11:00 to 13:30 and 17:00 to 20:30 in the afternoon.
Building ban on coastal land overturned The Cultural Councillor Anabel Iranzo met with Juan Bautista, director of the Museum of Nerja in order to start the restoration process of the cannon which is located on the Mirador del Bendito, near the Parador Hotel. The restoration is part of the second phase of the reform of the Cultural Museum, which goes from prehistory to the seventeenth century. The Balcon de Europa, which was an ancient fortress built in the early sixteenth century, was remodeled in the eighteenth century and given the cannons. But during the War of Independence it was completely destroyed by the British. This cannon, similar to the ones on the Balcon, was installed on the Mirador after being rescued from the sea near Calahonda beach.

Nerja inaugarates photographic exhibition of aspiring Queen and Knight of the Feria of Nerja
The Mayor of Nerja, Rosa Arrabal confirmed that the recent music festival in Nerja had been more successful then last year with 10,000 festival goers. She especially thanked the festival organisers and security services, fire brigade and civil protection and everyone that participated in the festival. There were minimal queues in the various restaurants, bars and toilet facilities and festival goers were able to enjoy not just the music but also the town of Nerja and it's beaches too.
The regional plan to halt construction within 500 metres of the sea has been deemed illegal, however the Junta are thinking about appealing. The Plan de Proteccion del Corredor del Litoral, was designed to stop construction on land near the coastline that has not already been built on. A town in Cadiz recently appealed against this ruling and the judge went in their favour, saying that the restrictions were made by an acting government and they did not have the authority to make such rules. The plan had also halted construction of 1,200 homes, half of these planned for the Torre del Mar area. Councillors in Velez originally appealed the 2015 plan, but at the time the appeal was turned down. The Junta de Andalucía has said that it is studying the options available to it to appeal against the ruling in Madrid’s Supreme Court.

How to "Ibiza Style" your Terrace The sense of style and chic in Ibiza can be reproduced in your home, especially outside on your terrace area. This trend has now become one of the all time classics which you can encompass into your Mediterranean home. You need to aim for harmonious simplicity and try to use natural materials to achieve the “Ibiza look. No need to spend cash going to the white isle - just replicate it on your terrace! White is an Ibiza must Using white is the key to everything that has to do with the style and decor in Ibiza. The typcial houses on the island are white, with wide walls that are usually covered with lime or sometimes stone. This can be copied on your terrace by painting the walls white and incorporating on the floor either a clay tile or slate imitation resin floor. Remember that in addition to being decorative it should be a surface that resists well to the elements and does not slip. The general idea for Ibiza style is the more rough and rustic, the better it is.
A rustic touch Ibizan houses have a Phoenician origin, so the construction of them are cubic and very functional. In addition to whitewashed walls, there are also flat roofs, interior arches and small windows with cute little wooden shutters. Obviously the basic structure of your terrace cannot easily be modified, so consider playing with the exterior image to give a different look. A pergola can enhance your terrace and give you extra vital shade along with implementing one that embodies all that is Ibiza. Think of using old wood or bamboo? Another idea is to leave any exposed beams and try to hunt for older materials and items when you are looking for things for the home.
The best piece of furniture In order to transport that Ibiza vibe to your terrace a key piece of furniture is ideal. Low corner sofas with lots of cushions and rugs for the floor add that important warm, homely and rustic feel. Or how about built-in shelving? Remember to incorporate the all important blue colour somewhere that is so characteristic of the Mediterranean.
Ibiza light Ibiza is synonymous with light, dynamism and vitality and therefore it is an element that we should not neglect on our terrace. However, its a no-no to have powerful spotlights, the effect you want should be more understated. You can use wall down-lighters or shadow effect lights which are more rustic in feel. Try to incorporate environmental lighting. Always complete the look with lots of decorative candles, spheres or lighting cubes which will bring the atmosphere of your terrace alive at night. Twin the lighting with a nice glass of something cold and some chilled out house tunes... Ibiza could be in your own back yard!

How to throw a wicked I think we have all been to a Halloween party that was thrown together at the last minute - only half the people dressed up with a paper skeleton and/or pumpkin taped to the wall for decorations. Pizza and beer was served for snacks while some Ozzy song was droning on in the background. Sometimes they work out.... more often than not, they flop. This guide will save you from the curse of the paper skeleton and pizzas!
Halloween party
Planning
To theme or not to theme
Most people hate to plan because it seems like so much work... in reality, planning can cut your total input time by half. Do yourself a favour and get a large whiteboard to assist you in planning. It will help you stay on track, weigh options, and remind you of things.
There seems to a be a modern trend for themed Halloween parties. Here are some themes that I have experienced: GHOST: Everybody dresses as a ghost. This can be from a sheet with holes to a full on latex application. The decor was "haunted" and garden was a graveyard. DEAD CELEBRITY: You guessed it, you have to come as a famous person who has passed on. I saw five Elvis's at that party (3 fat, 1 skinny, 1 ghost Elvis!) and the house was done up in lots of glam and glitter from the skulls to the pumpkins. MOVIE MONSTERS: Jason, Freddy, and Mike? Perhaps just Dracula or Frankenstein? The party was done up in old movie posters and memorabilia as well as a lot of pumpkin lanterns. ZOMBIES!: Nuff said. Everybody comes as the walking dead. The garden and house can be decorated as a graveyard with the kitchen looking like a mad scientist lab/morgue. Put toxic waste symbols everywhere as well as zombie posters. CLOWNS!: Just clowns... the good, the bad, the ugly.... and the evil. A circus theme can prevail throughout and even creepy circus music for the background. VAMPIRES: Real ones, not the shiny ones. The outdoor terrace should be a graveyard, lots of coffins and caskets. Lots of bats, candles, and spider/spider webs. Red wine, red sauce, red velvet cake, anything red or bloody.
Location Ideally the party should be at your home, or the home of a very close relative or friend. This will take lots of stress away from decorating, prep work, storage etc. It is better to have weeks to decorate and prepare rather than a few hours at a rented location. What if you don't have a house or your place is on the small side? Outdoors: (make sure it is legal) Bonfires make party hubs, just make sure you are safe and have shelter in case of rain. Local Hall or Bar: This is great for some but it does limit your prep time and enforces a hard start and stop for your party. Also you have a short clean up window and must be extra careful with the property. Not to mention hauling your decorations back and forth. If you have no other options, this can still be a great place to party if you work at it.
The basics Now that you have the where, lets knock out the other basic questions of having a successful party: Who: Who are you planning to invite? Get a list together now (on your whiteboard) and see how many you will invite and how many you THINK will show. What: What type of party is it? Children, adult, mixed? Will there be a theme? Costume required? Do guests need to bring anything? Will there be food and drink? Games or other entertainment? When: Where you have your party and who you invite can effect this greatly. What time will it start? 12 THE MARKET PLACE
Whats on the menu? A great host provides treats/food tailored for Halloween. This would be a good time to decide if you are going to shoulder the entire cooking burden. Do you have a co-host that is helping? Will you require your guests to bring items? How much time, effort and money will you be able/willing to put into the menu? At bare minimum, the host should
provide a variety of drinks and a few standard snacks. At most, the host should see the menu from cradle to grave. As the host/hostess cups, plates, flatware and napkins are also your responsibility. The old adage of "If you want something done right..." comes to mind. A happy medium can be reached depending on your situation.
Now that's entertainment! Every party waxes and wanes like the moon. During any lulls, do you plan to have entertainment? You don't have to plan any games or entertainment (I mean you are at a Halloween Party what more could you want?) but I would suggest you at least have a small game or skit planned as an ice breaker. Ideas for entertainment: costume contest, Live band or DJ, mummy wrapping competition, scavenger hunt, pumpkin carving contest.
If clothes make the man....then decor makes the party Decorating for your party is crucial for a good time. Whether you go minimalist or overboard, make sure you do something n Swap out normal pictures for lenticular or other scary printed pics. n Replace your every day what-nots, flower arrangements, vases, fruit bowl etc. with Halloween equivalents. n Place a variety of rubber snakes, rats, and bugs in among your food. (Even in your fridge, medicine cabinet and kitchen cupboards for nosy guests!) n Motion Sensor props. Great for a scare as your guests move about. Dropping spiders, screaming paintings, lunging rats or zombies.... a few of these are sure to be a hit. (I always put a Haunted Hedge in my philodendron that sits in my kitchen) n Bloody hand prints on mirrors in bathrooms are great or write out in fake blood "HELP ME" or "BEHIND YOU"

Goodbye Nerja NADFAS, Hello THE ARTS SOCIETY NERJA! In May 2017 The National Association Of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies rebranded its name and image after 50 years to more reflect the changes in the activities and scope of the Society and the Society’s Vision: “The belief that the Arts have the potential to enrich peoples’ lives is at the heart of everything we do. We want to be the most inclusive and influential Arts Society”. THE ARTS SOCIETY NERJA itself is approaching its 25 Anniversary and there will be a number of events and exhibitions to celebrate this over the next 18 months. In 1965 Patricia Fay founded an Antiques Group in the Chilterns and as the Group expanded rapidly she formed the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies in 1968. In the 1970s NADFAS became a Registered Charity and underwent a period of rapid expansion with the creation of many new Societies across the UK, and the launch of key initiatives such as Church Recording, Young Arts and Heritage Volunteering. For her inspiration and vision Patricia Fay (who had an untimely death at only 46 years old) received an OBE in 1975. Today The Arts Society is a leading Arts Education Charity with a global network of 385 local Societies in the UK, Europe and
Australasia, which brings people together through a shared curiosity for all aspects of The Arts. There are 90,000+ members worldwide. The Arts Society’s strength is its Members, joined together by a passion for the Arts which can nourish and empower us all and it would not be where it is today without the dedication and the enthusiasm of the Volunteers who work tirelessly on the Committees that run the Local Societies and support The Arts in all it many forms. The Arts Society Nerja continues to meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in the Cultural Centre Nerja from October to May where Members can hear expert, accredited Lecturers who share their
specialist knowledge about the Arts. The Society also organises Arts and Cultural Day Tours throughout Andalucía and 5 day Tours further afield to advance Members knowledge and understanding of the heritage of Spain. The details of which can be seen monthly in the local press and magazines, the local Tourist Offices, The Cultural Centre in Calle Granada and various locations in the area and visitors to the area are more than welcome to attend the lectures for E10 (E5 for other The Arts Society Members from around the world). Return to Smugglers Inn! After a number of years, Joanna and Richard Collick have returned to Smugglers Inn at the bottom of Calle Castilla Perez in Nerja. They first arrived in Nerja in the mid 1990's along with 3 year old son Joni - their daughter Sara being born here in 1996. The Collick's have been familiar faces in Nerja for over 23 years, starting out at The Market Tavern (the old home of GINS Golf Society), before moving on to The Avalon Hotel in Punta Lara. Their first spell at Smugglers Inn (named after a bar they had in Herne Bay) was almost 20 years ago. The couple then

Car News
by Martin Ward
First Driving Impressions Land Rover Discovery, European Launch Barcelona The Discovery started life in 1989 and was a mighty change for Land Rover. The traditionalists wondered what on earth was going on - a posh Land Rover after all those years of the Defender... and if they thought the first one was posh, then wait till they see this all-new one.
T
his new Discovery has got some brilliant styling. It looks so elegant, except for one thing, so let’s get the negatives out of the way early. Somebody has decided in the design department to put the rear number plate in an ‘off-set’ position - not in the middle, but to the left-hand side. Land Rover say this is to be reminiscent of the early cars that also had an off-set plate, but they did look ok - this one just looks odd. The rest of the car though is fine. It does have a slightly raised, or stepped roof but nowhere near as prominent as the previous cars. This slight increase in height does help to give more rear head room. Seven seats are fitted as standard and the third row are fairly easy to get into, but not quite as easy to get out of, you need to be a bit of a contortionist to extract yourself from the vehicle. Once in and seated they are very comfortable with enough leg and headroom, with a good view as they are slightly raised. And the seats look to be almost full size, unlike many other ‘7-seaters’ that just offer ¾ size seats. But a clever move on Land Rovers part to offer 7 as standard. In Spain we only got the opportunity to drive the 2.0-litre diesel 240ps that goes from 0-60mph in 8 seconds. A lower powered 2.0d is available, but not being sold in the UK. A V6 diesel costs around £1,500 more than the 2.0d, and this engine is likely to be the most popular in the UK, but with a growing trend away from diesel at the moment, then LR may find a smaller petrol is required as a V6 petrol is only available at the moment. Land Rover, like so many other manufacturers who have depended on diesels for many years may find that changes are needed as customer’s engine choices change. We drove the 240ps away from the hotel as the sun was rising, and they looked fantastic in this light, all lined up, and ready to go on the promenade overlooking the beach, a brilliant sight. We set off through small towns and villages and then onto the motorway, and it was superb in all these conditions. It just purred quietly on the motorway, just no effort when you wanted to accelerate, it certainly had plenty of power from this 2-litre diesel, and coupled to a very smooth 8-speed automatic, the driving experience on road was just a pleasure. There will be four models available in the UK: S – which will only account for around 2% of sales, and priced around £43,500. Then the SE priced from £49,500 to £53,500 – depending 20 THE MARKET PLACE
on which engine is chosen. The biggest seller will be the HSE taking around 54% of sales, and a price range of £57,000 to £60,000. The top of the range HSE Luxury is priced from £62,700 to £65,600, which sounds a lot of money but is fully loaded - and I mean FULLY loaded. The one to have, after having driven the 2.0-diesel is the HSE. You get all you need in a car, and it will cost you around £57,000... ouch, you might say... but a lot of car for the money. After the very pleasant on-road drive, we went to Les Comes, a huge area up in the hills North West of Barcelona, where there is around 70km of off-road tracks, of varying degrees of danger and skill. At various points there was a Land Rover sign with a number on it. You then had to put that number into an iPad in the car, and you got instructions as to which system to select for maximum grip and safety. The downhill descent system was brilliant, the car went down some pretty steep hills, and it didn’t move an inch, just crept down with complete confidence. Then we tried another new system, which is best described as Cruise-Control for off-roading. You simply set a maximum speed, take your foot off the accelerator and it almost drives itself over the very harsh terrain we went over, all you do is steer it, and the Discovery does the rest. Takes a bit of fun out of it, and again those Land Rover traditionalists will be horrified, but why take any risks when the car knows better than you? We did not get a chance to take the Disco through any water, but this new car does have a wading depth of 900mm or three-feet in old money… so fairly deep. The interior just oozes quality, so refined, so good. It is more like a very expensive premium saloon, you feel very special when sat in it. The designers, engineers and suppliers have manged to put more into this luxury vehicle, but at the same time reduced its weight by around 480kg – whatever that is in old-money!! This all-new Land Discovery certainly is a brilliant all-rounder, everything really you would ever need in a vehicle: 7-seats, smooth 8-speed auto, great on-road, excellent off-road, looks fantastic (except rear number plate!), standard air-suspension on all models, so comfortable and sheer luxury in the cabin – what a vehicle.

The Royal British Legion, Nerja Branch It may be a cliche but this year it seems even truer than in the past... time flies and waits for no man. It seems like no time at all since we were talking about summer coming and already it is ending!!! At the Legion we are gearing up now for the Poppy Walk, the Poppy Ball and Remembrance weekend events. This year the Walk is on the 15th October and will begin as usual at the Al Andalus hotel in Maro and end at the El Puente restaurant in Nerja. This is a friendly walk - no racing- and no prizes for the first to romp home, just our grateful thanks to all who take part and raise money from sponsorship’s. Anyone who is interested in helping or supporting our efforts is welcome and sponsorship forms are available from Dorothy Allen (see end of article). The Poppy Ball this year is once again an amalgamation with Los Romanes and if last year’s Ball was anything to go by, will be a great evening of lovely food, great music and dancing, super raffle with fun people. Tickets will be limited,
so if you are interested, contact one of the members listed at the end of this article and ensure that you definitely get yours. As I mentioned last month, we are shortly saying goodbye to Nick and Sue Ball (pictured right) who are returning to live in UK. They have been staunch members of the Nerja branch for many years and Nick has held many different offices. Before coming to Spain, Nick had served in the Royal Horse Guards and the Army Air Corps, where he became Senior Flying Instructor. On leaving the Army he joined Westland Helicopters in Yeovil and was instrumental in creating the instruction manuals for the new Apache helicopter. A very worthwhile career which was undoubtedly helped and supported by Sue who having been ground crew with BEA
enabled them both to fly to the top! They will leave a gap in our branch, so it is with not a little sadness that we see them go, but wish them much happiness in their new life and home. I am sure that wherever they go they will be welcomed into their new community and soon be enlivening the companywith Nick’s quietly sociable manner and Sue’s gregarious nature. I am sure I speak for all our members when I say You will be missed. Our first lunch of this season at Nuevas Arenas Restaurant in La Herradura will be on Friday 6th October. You can book with Vera (see end of article) for that one or the next one at the Al Andalus hotel on the 19th October. Don’t worry if you are not
ex-Service or serving, we love to have new friends along. Nor do you have to be British, we welcome people of all nationalities. October Film Night at FTK The Fellowship of The King launches another season of its popular “Film and Tapas” evenings at 7.30pm on Friday 6th October at its premises in Pasaje San Miguel (close to the main Mercadona). The film on this occasion - “Luther” - is part of FTK’s own contribution to the 500th anniversary celebrations of the beginning of the European Reformation. This multi-award winning, big-budget, independent movie presents a historically accurate and excellently filmed dramatisation of the events leading up to and beyond Martin Luther’s posting of his 95 Theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg in 1517. It boasts a cast list that includes a veritable constellation of stars, including Alfred Molina, Bruno Ganz and Sir Peter Ustinov playing one of his last roles, that of Frederick of Saxony. Joseph Fiennes turns in a fine performance portraying Luther and making the audience both admire and feel pity for him throughout 22 THE MARKET PLACE
the film, indeed all the actors are uniformly excellent in their roles, the costumes accurately reflect historical reality and the dialogue is well written and unusually rich, sprinkled with direct quotes from Luther’s literary works. Not surprisingly it holds the viewers attention throughout. This is possibly one of the most insightful, fascinating, and profound movies to be released in the last 30 years, following, as it does, the turbulent struggle between the Catholic church and the patchwork quilt of princedoms that was Germany in the 1500’s and
offers a shocking glimpse into medieval power and politics, as Cardinals attempt to bend, cajole or force princes and monarchs to take their side against a man variously dubbed “a drunken German” and “a petty monk” by his opponents. This is no sentimental biopic - it revolves around the life of probably the greatest liberator of the middle ages, the coarse but charismatic Martin Luther, whose social and political legacy we all still benefit from, to say nothing of his game-changing role in redefining Western Christianity and taking it back to its true foundation. As one
leading historian (Professor Martin E. Marty) writes “I have a hard time picturing several aspects of the modern world without Luther.” A film not to be missed! As ever, all are welcome and admission is free, as are the complementary drinks and tapas. For more information call 95 252 3895 or email fotk. spain@gmail.com

Lesser known varieties are Achroite (colourless), Dravite (yellow to brown) and Siberite (lilac to violet blue), plus many more...

Opal is the gemstone of enjoyment of life and therefore, supports health in general!!! It excites fantasy, creativity and musical arts. Opal intensifies the experiences lived here and now in the present. The gems with intensive colour play are most effective for healing (white and black Opal) and the ones with dark body colour (black Opal) are known to be the strongest of all.
Origin:
Olympic Australis Opal The Olympic Australis is reported to be the largest and most valuable gem opal ever found. It was found in 1956 at the famous Eight Mile opal field in Coober Pedy, South Australia. A miner working his claim found the opal at a depth of 30 feet. It was named in honour of the Olympic Games, which were being held in Melbourne at the time. This extraordinary opal consists of 99% gem opal with an even colour throughout the stone, and is one of the largest and most valuable opals ever found. The balance of 1% is the remaining soil still adhering to the stone. It weighs 17,000 carats (3450 grams) and is 28cm x 12cm x 11.5cm. It was valued at AUD$2,500,000 in 2005. Due to the purity of the opal it is anticipated that upwards of 7000 carats could be cut from the piece. However owing to it's uniqueness, the opal will remain exactly as found. 26 THE MARKET PLACE
Brazil is the most important supplier of tourmaline. It is found also in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia, Australia, in Asia (Burma, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka), in Africa (Madagaskar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania) and in Europe (only Switzerland and Elba, Italy).
Healing properties: Tourmaline has many supportive healing powers. As this depends on the mineral content of the stone the varieties are put to different use. For example: - Indicolite: (blue): fosters faithfulness, ethical and responsibility awareness. Helps with grief and blocked emotions, makes open minded and tolerant. Physically, supports excretion of kidney and bladder - Rubellite (red): promotes energy of life and the joy of sexuality. Helps to be sociable and charming. Physically, stimulates circulation, blood purification and function of sex organs. - Schorl (black): stimulates the flow of energy throughout the body. Helps with stress and challenges as much as helps minimise negative thoughts. It helps to relax body and mind - Verdelite (green): brings enjoyment of life and helps with regeneration. Strengthens the heart, helps with detoxification, constipation and diarrhea. - Watermelon tourmaline (pink/green): Especially good for nerve regeneration. - Paraiba: brings wisdom and a sense of justice with difficult decisions. Stimulates liver, nerves, brain and hormone production.

Manish's Zodiac predictions - October Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )
You are certainly more serious these days, and you might find that you benefit from more attention to practical matters as well as re-organization of important structures in your life. A partner might begin to rethink matters or could be emotionally distant from the 19th; but singles, on the other hand, might enjoy a renewed and refreshed romance. The last week of the month demands some slowing down, and this is good timing for many who are enjoying holiday vacations.
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
It’s a good time to turn your feelings into actions and physically express your emotions. Creative or artistic activities now ultimately lead to successful exhibitions of your work, greater emotional satisfaction from physically expressing your talent, or a success in representing the talents of others. Focusing on home and family this month is especially rewarding. You are also enjoying the renewal of interest from a special someone in your life.
Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)
You’re bound to experience more satisfaction from your job, improved working conditions, and better health. Although work can be hectic at times, you enjoy taking care of all the details. You had better prepare for a big transformation in your financial life over the month ahead. You will certainly reassess your role in the lives of others, and there may be an inclination to marry, or shack up with an older person.
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )
Your creativity and social life are stimulated this month, and plenty of opportunities to express yourself uniquely and creatively are likely to present themselves. You may find great joy and reward in your creative projects and hobbies. Ideally you will have a stronger sense of purpose, and a re-worked ego. Surprises usually occur in your life on a regular basis with regard to work and play.
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )
This can be a time when shared beliefs, interests, and ideologies are a focal point in a close relationship. Many of you are attracting people who want to help, who are on your side, and who take a keen interest in you. You can seek the wisdom and guidance of others. If you have not established long-range goals or developed a perception of what your ultimate destiny should be, do it during this period.
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )
This period expands your confidence and urges you to take greater risks than the facts might support. Networking, enjoying friends, and taking part in group activities are in focus this month. Love is connected with friends, online activities, or group associations. Relationships are mostly easygoing and singles should keep an eye out for love opportunities. It’s time to balance your life with some down time – otherwise, you simply don’t feel whole. 28 THE MARKET PLACE
Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )
It’s a great month for initiating, building, developing, and learning. Gathering information can be a big focus. There is a robust and active focus on personality development, finances, work, health, and talents. On many levels, you can feel revitalized. People notice you for who you are not only what you do. A greater interest in and knowledge of your family history will expand your activities and contacts with family members.
Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )
This is a time for slowing down if you’ve been pushing too hard, or for navigating speed bumps, likely related to family matters and partnerships. This can be an improved time for children or creative projects as well. A relationship that is both stable and exciting may figure strongly for some of you. Your inherent tendency toward expansive gestures will be enhanced.
Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )
All month, you’re looking to break out of the mould or routine in various ways through what you learn and where you go. You’re more courageous and motivated to try new things. You may unexpectedly begin a new romance, or just as suddenly break off with a romantic partner. Unusual or non-traditional romantic situations or partners take your fancy. Superficial areas of your life no longer satisfy you.
Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )
Your instincts and intuition are working overtime now. This will greatly increase your energy and dynamism, making you more attractive to the opposite sex and this can also be a time for an edge in your romantic or personal life. Professionally, transacting business, increasing income, conserving monetary assets, monitoring expenditures, and comparison shopping are on your agenda. This is also a time for recognizing your need to pay attention to mental and physical health.
Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )
You’re being pulled out of your routine, nudging you towards a better balance. This can be a time for discovering your feelings about a friendship or project. You have more faith that your efforts are counting for something and responsibilities can be more satisfying and enjoyable as a result. You’re able to work hard and play hard now, or simply enjoy a healthier balance between work and play.
Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )
This is a month for doing some soul-searching, digging and investigating. You may be doing a lot of observing and planning, and you’re inclined to pour quite a bit of energy into engrossing projects and interests. In terms of career, outward signs of progress may not be as forthcoming, yet the work that you do during this transit will lay a foundation for future success and progress!

Experts reveal the best treatments for skin worries Stretch Marks, Cellulite and Varicose Veins covered. Q What's the best way to ditch stretch marks?
Major study finds you can't be both fat and fit
The statement “healthy comes in many sizes” is being challenged by a groundbreaking new study. Researchers at University of Birmingham’s Institute of Applied Health Research looked at the public health records of 3.5 million Brits over a 20-year period, and compared weight and metabolic status to the risk of cardiovascular disease. People who are “metabolically healthy obese”,those who are obese but do not suffer from conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, still have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, compared to people who are of a “normal” weight, the study found. Three metabolic abnormalities were taken into consideration during the study — diabetes, hypertension [high blood pressure] and hyperlipidaemia [high cholesterol]. A metabolically healthy person was classified as having no metabolic abnormalities, the study states. The researchers found that the people who fell into the “metabolically healthy obese” category had a 49 per cent higher risk of having developed heart disease, a seven per cent higher risk of having had a stroke, and a 96 per cent higher risk of having suffered heart failure. Lead author and epidemiologist Dr Rishi Caleyachetty, from the University of Birmingham, said obese people who were otherwise relatively fit and healthy were still at risk of developing serious heart problems. “Obese individuals with no metabolic risk factors are still at a higher risk of coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and heart failure than normal weight metabolically healthy individuals,” Dr Caleyachetty said. The study concluded that obese people should be encouraged to lose weight.

A Complete removal is never guaranteed and for many people stretch marks are just a part of their body. There are laser removal treatments for stretch marks but these do tend to only lessen the appearance not remove them completely. You can reduce their appearance by dry body brushing once a day and using a weekly coffee scrub. Q What about Cellulite? A Cellulite is difficult to 'cure'. It's an anatomical defect, due to the skin being tethered by fibrous septae to the underlying muscle layer. This tethering creates the indentations and surface irregularities on the skin's surface. It's mainly genetic, made worse by weight gain as it exacerbates the puckering by increasing the volume in the fat compartments. Some skin tightening radio-frequency laser
treatments may help soften the appearance of cellulite but multiple treatments are usually required and the cost for several sessions is expensive. It works by melting fat and tightening the fibrous septae, therefore reducing the drag on the outer skin layer, making it look smoother and less like cellulite. Q How can I get rid of varicose veins? A Non-surgical treatments are the gold standard, particularly endovenous laser therapy. This gently seals the vein by applying thermal energy, which causes the vein to scar and after a period of time the body reabsorbs the vein and it disappears. This laser procedure is about 98 per cent effective over five years and doesn't have the associated risks of surgery. Endovenous laser treatments are undertaken at specialised clinics , but again are quite costly. Most patients see results within a few weeks. The important thing to understand is you can't judge the severity of the varicose veins just by looking at them, so it's best to get an ultrasound scan to check. Even if you have a consultation and get the scan done, you can obviously decide not to go ahead with treatment but at least you'll know how bad your varicose veins are. When left untreated, varicose veins can progress to complications such as swelling, aching and throbbing, ulcers, deep venous thrombosis and skin pigmentation, so it's best to consult your GP.
5 ways to turn negative thinking around 1. Become ‘thought-aware’ Critically observe your thinking. Invite your wise, inner self to hover on your shoulder for a few days to observe & listen. Be open and honest with yourself. What negative thoughts are preventing you from moving you toward the person or professional, you really want to be? 2. Identify & Acknowledge Which of your thought patterns are negative, self-limiting, judgmental, or defensive? These will be the thoughts that are, as we say, ‘messing with your life’, because literally, what you think often enough is what you’ll experience. 3. Transform your thinking Make a note of each ineffective thought pattern identified above and work to shift it to something positive and constructive. Ensure that you make the strategic thought selections that will produce the feel-good, rewarding outcomes that you’re looking for. (Example: “I can’t” could become “I will, watch me!”) 4. Live it When the occasion arrives, enact what you’ve rehearsed. Instead of the old belief system Replacing the holding you back, your new thought-choice will immerse you in a brand new, more negativity with possibility self-fulfilling experience. and positivity creates space 5. Practice and Persevere for a sense of freedom, Shifting thought patterns that have been with you for a lifetime will require a strong openness, hope, and will, continual experimentation and persistence, but the change WILL happen in time. inspiration.

October in Nerja - Feria Time! The long hot summer has sadly come to an end, but there's still something to look forward to as the Feria of Nerja takes place this month from the 7th to the 12th October. The Feria (or local town fair) is centred around a large fairground area behind Calle Carabeo and Los Huertos, with a full programme of events by day, before the evenings - when the fun really starts! (log onto the town hall website to find out more: www.nerja.es) There are, as with any Feria: beautiful ladies dressed up in their traditional flamenco dresses, the smell of doughnuts and candy floss drifting and live music with plenty of dancing and fireworks! Like most Ferias across Andalucia, Nerja's is steeped in tradition, with the bling-bling archway, just to let you know you have entered - not that you would not realise anyway with the deafening, raucous, reggaeton music booming to add to the high energy atmosphere! As well as the usual fairground rides (great for kids and teenagers and if you like that sort of thing), there are stalls and fast food places but it is not generally a place renowned for high quality fodder - more the sort of "grab it and go" fast food that just fills a hunger gap while you mingle and take in the typically Spanish chaotic ambience. Remember to call by the traditional "casetas", this is where you usually find the bars, some food and live music and plenty of dancing, then you can really observe the local Nerjeña's dancing, singing and having a good time!

Lidia's Story Hello everyone I’m Lidia. This is my rags to riches story. I am nearly 12 years old and used to live in the campo with my 2 friends, Gangi and Fiona – we are all neutered. I used to be able to sleep in a small allotment which had a shed which sheltered me from the rain and the heat of the sun, but the owner threw me out with my friends, who were no more than puppies then, about 10 months ago. From then on I used to rely on lovely people walking by with their dogs to leave food and clean water. My legs do not work very well and although I can walk and run a little but I could not run away fast enough to avoid the stones thrown at us. Then my luck changed. Two ladies from APA Nerja Dog shelter kindly came, picked me up, cuddled me and took me away from this place to a house where a young girl lived. She embraced me so lovingly that I really felt special, in fact I was even allowed on her bed – I had not had that attention for I don’t know how 40 THE MARKET PLACE
long, let alone food and water regularly – I was in paradise. After a few weeks with these lovely people who fostered me, I had a really important visit to the vets – San Fernando – had a check up, my chip details changed and a passport. On a Sunday morning I was on my way to the airport to catch a flight to Holland. Who would take such time to find a family and home for me – yes me, a crippled scruff from the campo? Those ladies? The young girl who cuddled me so tight? The vet? The lady who came on the aeroplane with me? The lady who met me in Holland to take me to my new family? – sooooo much kindness, so I gather it’s a big team of people working together with my welfare at heart. I am one of the lucky ones as I now have new, loving owners in Holland, but please let me introduce you to my two friends who remain in the campo scraping a life. Gangi is the white one, he is 18 months old and the brown one is Fiona, she is about 2. They have been living in the campo for longer than me, in fact they
used to stay with me in my shed until we were all thrown out. From being shy and nervous with people they have become lovable and play beautifully with everyone. Like I was, they are looking for a home too. They do not want anything glamorous just a home that will love and look after them. I want to say thank you to everyone who leaves food and water but a special thank you to Daniella who makes sure they are treated for fleas, ticks and worms, gives them medicine if needed and cleans their ears. If anyone out there has a heart which stretches to offering us a home please call: Ilsa on 651 512 488 (speaks Dutch, Spanish and English) or Carla 643 365 6889 (speaks Italian, Spanish and some English), Daniella 63 441 461 / 952 96 6810 (speaks French) Thank you for taking time to read my story. I want to thank APA Nerja for giving me this chance to live a wonderful life in my advanced years – I love you all.

Hydroponic farming Hydroponically grown lettuce, tomatoes, strawberries and herbs make up an everincreasing share of produce on display at many grocery stores and farmers markets. But growing plants indoors in controlled conditions is hardly new. For centuries, large - and small-scale growers have used greenhouses and container gardening to extend the growing season, create ideal growing conditions and increase growing space. What makes hydroponics different is the absence of soil.
I
nstead of drawing water and nutrients from soil, hydroponic produce is grown with the roots submerged in nutrient-fortified water. Aeroponics is a related method in which the roots hang in the air and are regularly misted with water and nutrients. One benefit of hydroponic farming is that it allows large amounts of produce to be grown on a relatively small piece of land and in places where traditional farming would be untenable, such as urban areas.
grown produce is challenging, and research involving direct comparisons is limited. Both traditional and hydroponic farmers can influence the nutritional content of produce by adding nutrients to the soil or growing medium. But the nutritional composition of a fruit or vegetable also depends on the particular cultivar or variety, the degree of ripeness when harvested and the storage period after harvest. With hydroponics, there is no danger of plants absorbing heavy metals that may be in the soil. On the other hand, growing vegetables in soil may yield benefits that we don’t yet fully understand.
Hydroponic growers help satisfy demand for local produce in areas that are not well-suited for traditional farming. But even in farm-friendly regions where rain and sun are plentiful, What about flavour? storms, heat waves and unexpected freezes can cause Although you may think sun and soil are essential for good unpredictable and costly crop losses, to which indoor farmers flavour, the factors that influence flavour — including air are largely immune. temperature, humidity, the amount and colour spectrum of Hydroponic crops also are less susceptible to weeds, insects light-nutrient availability and moisture — can be precisely and other pests, which means the plants can be produced controlled and more reliably replicated in a hydroponic without herbicides and pesticides. environment. All this has made hydroponics one of the fastest growing sectors of the agriculture industry, with more traditional growers investing in hydroponics as a supplement to existing operations or switching over entirely. Another potential advantage of hydroponic farming is the degree of control the grower has over the conditions to which plants are exposed and the ability to precisely replicate those which produce better results. However, not every plant does equally well in hydroponic growing conditions, at least with current technology. Lettuce and other leafy greens, herbs, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and strawberries are the most commonly grown hydroponics. Hydroponic operations, which often use sophisticated water recycling systems, may use up to 90 percent less water than traditional farming, depending on the location. While traditional farms in water-stressed areas rely heavily on irrigation and use far more water than hydroponics, other areas get most of their water from rain. Some hydroponic growers also rely on electric grow-lights instead of the sun. This allows growers to artificially extend the length of the day and manipulate light wavelengths to increase yield and productivity year-round. Not having to till and plow fields can reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses associated with crop production.
How do hydroponics compare nutritionally? Comparing the nutritional content of hydroponic and soil 44 THE MARKET PLACE
As with nutrient content, the flavour of produce depends on the variety and freshness, as well as growing conditions. Also because hydroponics can move the farms to the people, it can give people access to fresher produce. But the hydroponic produce at a local grocer isn’t necessarily grown locally.
The organic debate Because hydroponically grown fruits and vegetables can be produced without the use of pesticides or herbicides, many hydroponic growers are pursuing organic certification, which allows produce to be sold at a higher price point. But many traditional organic farmers are crying foul. If unchecked, hydroponics could squeeze out traditional organic farmers to the extent that consumers wouldn’t really have the option to buy soil-grown organic produce. Allowing hydroponic produce to be certified as organic is completely contrary to the values of the organic movement, improving and maintaining the health and biodiversity of soil is one of the core principles of organic growing. How can you be stewarding the soil if there is no soil? Proponents of organic hydroponics argue that hydroponic systems are aligned with the principles of stewardship, conservation and environmental harmony outlined in the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990. They also view new technology, such as hydroponics, as essential to meeting the demand for organics. Recipe: Creamy Miso Peanut Chicken Lettuce Wraps

Creamy Miso Peanut Chicken Lettuce Wraps Lettuce need not be boring... certainly not with this little Asian combo! It's a classic chicken salad meets an Asian chicken salad meets a lettuce wrap and all the flavours and textures really work. Cook Time: 15 minutes Serves: 4 people
PREPARATION
INGREDIENTS l 1/4 cup crunchy peanut butter l 3 tbsp of miso l 1/2 cup of stock or water l 1 tbsp soy sauce l 1 clove of garlic, minced l 3 green onions, minced l 1 jalapeno, ribs and seeds removed, finely chopped l 500g chicken breasts l 1 tbsp chilli powder l salt and pepper to taste l 3 cups of red, green or black grapes halved l butter lettuce leaves l lime juice
1) Whisk all the sauce ingredients together until smooth and creamy. 2) Heat a grill or skillet over medium high heat. Coat the chicken with the chili powder and a generous sprinkling of salt and pepper. When the grill is hot, add a little bit of butter if necessary to prevent sticking, and add the chicken. Cook for a few minutes on each side until the chicken is cooked through. I like to let it get it really golden brown on the outside. Set aside and let cool for at least five minutes. Cut or shred into small pieces.
Note : Miso paste is thick and very salty. In this recipe it adds flavour and weight 3) In a mixing bowl, combine about half to the sauce. If you can't find miso, you of the sauce with the chicken and the will need to compensate for the sauce grapes. Add more sauce as needed to get thickness AND for the saltiness. For everything evenly coated. example, use more peanut butter to 4) Stuff each butter lettuce leaf with thicken, but also add a little more soy the mixture. Add water or oil to the sauce for saltiness.

Local animal charities C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION
Punki (above left) is a young pup who was found in the Nerja campo a couple of years ago and taken in by a young Spanish couple who already had two dogs. She lived happily in their garden and became part of their family. Unfortunately the couple has recently broken up. The girlfriend has taken one dog to her father’s house and another was re-homed to Holland but poor Punki has no place to go. She is a very affectionate two to three year old female who gets along well with other dogs and who loves human company. Ossian and Sebastian (above right) are two brothers who were owned by an elderly Swedish man that lived in a caravan park for many years. He adopted both boys as young pups but as fate would have it the gent became seriously ill with kidney failure and had to fly home for urgent medical treatment. They are now 2-3 years old and each dog has an independent nature and confident/alpha personality. They prefer each other’s company but can live as a sole dog within a family. If you would like to meet any of these lovely dogs please contact Seacrest Kennels via e-mail at hotelparaperros.nerja@ gmail.com or call 95 252 1426 to arrange a viewing.
HAPPY TAILS Bruce (right), a lovely Jack Russell/Bodeguero pup who is about seven months old was found by a couple on holiday in Frigiliana this summer. He hit the jackpot when he was seen on the Costa Animal Society (CAS) Facebook page last month by a Swedish family who reserved him for adoption. We are now waiting for a flight partner to volunteer to take him to his new family in Stockholm. Flash and Alfie are still trying to clear the stringent hurdles put in place by the Norwegian government before they can fly to their new forever homes in Norway. Once they both pass their Rabies Titer tests, flights can be arranged with our Nordic sister charity.
EL TRAPICHE MARKET Every Tuesday you can find the Costa Animal Society (CAS) with a stall at the Trapiche market. (It is located next door to the airport.) Colin and Marjorie, in fine fettle, will be manning the stand until the end of the year when Sue returns to her perch. Books, DVDs, and the odd assortment of bric-a-brac will be on offer. Bespoke flower arrangements can be ordered for the following week. Stop by and hello. Information regarding our animals ready for adoption will be available and, of course, donations of second-hand items are always welcome. 48 THE MARKET PLACE
SCRUFFS! Handlers and dogs, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) is pleased to announce that our annual dog show Scruffs will be held on October 14 at the Plaza de España in Nerja from 12.00pm until 5.00pm. Guaranteed to be a wonderful afternoon, there will be prizes for 12 different categories, including Waggiest Tail, Best Rescue Dog and the real nail-biter, best Sit and Stay. Food and beverages will be available along with several stalls offering a diverse selection of handicrafts. While you’re there, don’t miss our tombola! For the uninitiated, a tombola is a game where when you buy a ticket if the last number of that ticket is a 0 or 5, there will be a corresponding prize on the table. The prizes this year will be well worth the gamble. We are also happy to announce that at 2.00pm there will be a dog walk with several animal rescue groups parading dogs ready for adoption. If a particular pooch catches your fancy, after a home evaluation you can begin a new life with a loving companion. Big fun!
OUR FEATURED DOG OF THE MONTH: HARVEY Harvey is another example of a fantastic young dog who was found in the streets of Caleta de Velez but did not have a chip. The couple who found him placed posters in the area and visited the local vets to no avail. Harvey has a wonderful, outgoing personality and enjoys the company of people and other dogs. He loves to play fetch with tennis balls and is also quite used to being on his own. Harvey is about one year old, is in good health, fully vaccinated and will be castrated this month.
COULD YOU HELP CAS? The Costa Animal Society is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas, so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact! In particular, more fundraisers are needed to work with our team, people are required to help with the feeding of the cats at the numerous feeding stations maintained by CAS, and animal lovers who could undertake a monthly airport run are necessary to take animals being re-homed in northern Europe to catch their flights. For a no-obligation chat, contact Vera on 95 252 9670 for general enquiries. Simone on 619 903 815 can answer queries about airport runs in English or German. And despite the tough times, money is still needed to cope with the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. If you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful. A.P.A. NERJA MORE PUPPIES DUMPED
for your chosen rescue dog to travel and PAWS collect them direct from us and straight to your door. Maybe you have considered rescuing a dog to give them a special home in UK – well, now you can. Contact us to meet some of our lovely dogs needing their forever home.
URGENT PLEA FOR MATERIALS
When will the word “neuter’’ stop scaring people – yes – we are angry – very angry. Once again seven small puppies have been torn from their mother, dumped in a shopping trolley and left outside our Shelter. If it wasn’t for the eagle eyes of one of our volunteers they would have ended up crushed in the bin collecting the rubbish. APA Nerja swung into action and foster families were found – this is not an easy task as people seem scared of fostering – this is the difference between life and death for a puppy and a future for an abandoned dog in our Shelter. Please contact us at APA Nerja if you can foster – we need you now !
PICASSO IN ENGLAND
APA Nerja is self-funded through donations from our supporters and the priority is our dogs’ health and welfare so the majority of our funding is used for vet and food bills. So how do we keep our Shelter going? We beg for materials to build and repair our kennels for the dogs. Have you got any building materials, maybe left over from a project, that you could donate? We need gates for our pens, strong wire sheeting for the pens and the most important need at the moment is paving slabs – any paving slabs – any shape – any size – any colour – the dogs are not fussy - but they would like to have a dry floor as Winter is coming. Please contact us if you can help.
PIPO IN SWEDEN
In September, one of our lucky dogs went to live in England with his new family who met him here when they were on holiday. Thank you Kathleen and Mike McInerny. Now, how did he get to England you say? Well, he took a little road trip with PAWS Transport Services based here in Spain. They are a premier pet transport service and have delivered a number of our dogs to their forever homes in UK. APA deal with all the paperwork 50 THE MARKET PLACE
This is the story about a lonely man and his new dog companion. After advertising in a local paper our Swedish team had a call from an elderly man called Rolf. His wife and his two dogs died last year and as a result
he was feeling very lonely. Rolf lives outside Stockholm near a forest and he was missing having a dog on his daily long walks. Rolf had already seen Pipo on the Swedish FB page and wanted to know more about him. It turned out that Pipo was the perfect match for Rolf; not too big, easy to walk, friendly and a little funny looking with his short legs and feet pointing out. When Pipo arrived at Arlanda airport it was love at first sight from both sides. A week later and they were like a couple who had lived together forever. Every evening Pipo climbs up beside Rolf on the sofa with his head in Rolf’s lap watching the TV together.
RUBIO’S REQUESTS – BUY A SLAB
Hi. I’m Rubio, and I’ve been asked to appeal on behalf of all the APA doggies:
TAIL TORROX We often bang on about how it is inadvisable to put rescued puppies in the same environment as adult dogs in the Refuge and the difficulties this causes us. We have limited options for basically the Refuge is set up as any kennels would be, facing rows of individual 2 dog kennels with tiled floors and short side walls for easy cleaning and disinfection, with mesh dividers between each kennel. For this reason any dog that appears ill is transferred to another part to endeavour to stop any cross infection, and why Tail is so redhot on cleanliness in and around the kennels but many infections such as parvovirus are airborne and herein lies the difficulty. Adult dogs can build up an immunity through their life, particularly if inoculated as puppies or early on, but rescued puppies, those thrown out and have none, would instantly pick up illness going through the kennels. It is for this reason, to keep the puppies apart from the adults, that our foster carers are so vital and valued. This summer has been a very trying time with more puppies being abandoned than in Tail’s previous seven years.
To most of our readership it probably comes as second WE NEED SLABS – don’t mean nature to ensure that your puppy is vaccinated against a to sound rude, but we do, variety of illnesses, desperately! Our food store (parvovirus, distemper, shed can’t be used till we’ve hepatitis, leptospirosis, and slabbed the floor; and all the later rabies) and that it is pens are very difficult for our not taken out of your home humans to clean ‘cos they’re gravel; SLABS would be soooo environment until at least two weeks after their final jab, much easier and much nicer but some, who rescue from on our delicate paws! the perreras (official Dog SLABS cost approximately 10 Pounds) with the best will in Euros per square metre: the the world, are shocked when more SLABS we get, the more they discover their chosen pens we can pave! pet is fatally ill. This has just SEND US A SLAB, THAT happened in our area when WOULD BE FAB! dozens of dogs went down with distemper and sadly Thank you so much, many died. Remember to Love Rubio return to you vet each year “TALK TO THE PAW” for your dogs/cats booster. Please send donations Date for your diary. Our to PayPal account Autumn dog show will take apanerja2015@gmail.com – place on 4th November 2017 marked “SLABS” at the Romeria ground Torrox Costa.

THE MARKET PLACE 51
Nerja
was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

La Herradura
nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Lake Viñuela
is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.

"We were searching for a Nissan Qashquai Diesel, around 3 or 4 years old, because they are much cheaper than a new car, but still nearly like new. We found some on the spanish market, but they were expensive and either former rent-a-cars or had loads of kilometers on the clock - or both. We read about Juergen’s service in the Marketplace and it seemed the perfect solution to find a good car for us because we don’t live here constantly and don’t really know much about cars (technically). We met one time in the beginning to speak about what car we wanted to have and then everything else we did by email, whatsapp or telephone. We chose a car in Berlin out of several suggestions from Juergen, and thank god the engineer was sent to check the car and the dealer - after his engineer’s report, which was dreadful, Jurgen called us and told us that he will not buy this car because of the bad score in the report and the dealer wasn’t trustworthy. After the weekend we got another car suggestion from a family run Nissan dealer, which got a report score of 93%. The car was picked up by a truck after one week and was in Nerja a week later. Just one day after it’s arrival it was taken by truck to the ITV and passed the technical inspection without any problem. We were kept up to date at every step of the process. Two weeks later the papers and number plates were ready - just in time for Jurgen to collect us from Malaga airport in our lovely new car!"
Paperwork completed. Your car is ready!
