Day Trip from Paris to Mont Saint Michel By Jessica Infantino Trumble

Mont Saint-Michel is one of those bucket list destinations. Located 250 miles west of Paris in Normandy, this floating island crowned by an abbey dedicated to St. Michael has attracted faithful pilgrims and modern-day travelers alike for more than a thousand years.

I

t’s a striking enigma where the elements of storm and sea are constantly at play. At low tide Mont Saint-Michel appears to be a mirage in the middle of the barren mudflats, and at high tide a dreamlike castle surrounded by water as the phenomenon of the tides work their magic each day. I’d been wanting to visit this wondrous place for years and finally got serious about it.

not this was the right trip to visit Mont Saint-Michel but review after review reaffirmed that it’s definitely worth it. So with that, we booked a daytrip that included a guided tour and lunch through PARISCityVISION. Not only did it make for an easy and enjoyable experience, but we also gained a ton of knowledge and insight along the way.

When I started looking into how to visit Mont Saint-Michel from Paris, I learned that it’s a long and logistically challenging daytrip to do on your own (especially if you want to witness the tides at their extremes). Because of that many people opt to stay overnight in Normandy or visit as part of an organised group tour. The latter option is a bit on the pricy side and makes for a long day, spanning about 14 hours from start to finish. These factors had me going back and forth as to whether or

Mont Saint-Michel dates back to 708 AD when St. Michael the Archangel appeared to a local bishop in a dream (3 dreams actually), instructing him to build a church on the rocky island. The structure we see today was constructed between the 10th and 16th centuries, with defensive ramparts added in the 14th century to protect the abbey and village from English invasion during the Hundred Year’s War and the newlyinvented cannon. Over the years it’s served various roles from Benedictine monastery and pilgrimage destination to a prison in the 18th century. Thereafter a campaign led by author Victor Hugo was launched to restore Mont Saint-Michel to its former glory. It was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 and today is home to the Order of the Fraternity of Jerusalem, with about 5 monks and

5 nuns currently living and worshipping in the abbey. Mont Saint-Michel even served as the inspiration for the castle in the 2010 Disney movie Tangled.

What to Expect On the day of our tour we departed from PARISCityVISION’s office near the Tulleries around 7 a.m. We scouted out seats on the top level of the doubledecker coach so we would have a good view of our surroundings as we left the urban streets of Paris for the rural countryside of Normandy. Our guide Natie was super sweet and informative, sharing interesting tidbits as we drove through the rolling green hills – like how cows (5 million) outnumber the people (3 million) living in Normandy, which is one of the reasons why the region is responsible for 80% of France’s butter production, not to mention cheese (Camembert being the most popular). The area is also home to tons of apples that are used to make cider and a special brandy called Calvados. This was a great primer for our lunch at the Relais SaintMichel restaurant, which include many of these local specialties like a warm Camembert-filled crêpe served over a salad, followed by salmon with rice and vegetables (and roasted chicken for me) and apple cake for dessert along with the famed apple cider to drink. The restaurant is conveniently located across from the bus stop where a free shuttle takes visitors from the mainland across the bridge to Mont Saint-Michel. It was here that we got our first good glimpse of the abbey in the distance, which resembled a giant rock perched gently on the horizon. At this point the wind had really kicked up and it continued on page 10

looked as if a terrible storm was blowing in, making our approach even more impressive. We exited the shuttle bus and Mont Saint-Michel towered over us. The experience can only be described as surreal, echoing the intensity that countless pilgrims must have felt upon reaching their final destination in centuries past. The abbey itself is impressive to say the least, defined primarily by Gothic architecture infused with Romanesque and Norman elements, reflecting the advancement of building technology and tools over time. Once inside our first stop was to the west terrace with unobstructed views of the vast mudflats and surrounding coastline. We were literally “walking on the wages of workers” as the numbered stones below our feet corresponded with the individuals who made them, a simple way to add up how much each stonecutter should be paid. We continued inside the abbey church, a dull space that was once vibrant with paint and stained glass before being stripped of its colour by the area’s harsh winds. A spire was added to the church in 1897, complete with a gold statue of the Archangel Michael facing southward to welcome pilgrims as they approached. When the statue was restored in 1987 a helicopter was required to remove and return it to its place atop the church. Our tour took us through other spaces including the cloisters, refectory, study rooms and various chapels and halls, learning about the use and construction of each room along the way. After the completion of our tour, we had a little less than an hour of free time to walk around the ramparts that overlooked the mudflats and wander back down through the village, dodging a few sudden downpours by popping in and out of gift shops. The storms just as suddenly seemed to subside so we decided to walk back to the mainland rather than wait in line for the shuttle bus, something I would highly recommend doing in either direction weather permitting. Thereafter we re-boarded our group’s coach to head back to Paris, arriving in the city a little after 9pm. Our parting image of Mont Saint-Michel

was that of the abbey in the distance as sheep with black noses and feet grazed peacefully in the meadows nearby (their extra salty meat is generally reserved to eat for special occasions, especially during Easter time). You don’t have to be a pilgrim to enjoy Mont Saint-Michel as 3 million visitors just like us come to marvel at this destination each year. Thanks to our great guide this long daytrip was more than worthwhile and I definitely want to return again for a longer visit in the future.

Also Good to Know What to wear – The weather can change in an instant as we witnessed multiple times during our visit, from extreme wind and rain to clear blue sunny skies. Be prepared with several layers including a good jacket and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. An umbrella may also be good to bring too. Getting across the bridge – You have a few options to get from the mainland to Mont Saint-Michel. A free shuttle bus makes stops at both the visitor parking lot and outside the Relais Saint-Michel restaurant where we ate lunch. Buses tend to fill up quickly but come about every 5 minutes. Weather permitting you can also walk across the bridge to the island, which takes about 30-45 minutes depending on your pace (and how often you stop to take photos). And if you’re feeling particularly fancy you can also take a horse-drawn carriage. Touring the mudflats – At low tide it’s possible to walk across the bay in the mudflats but only with a certified guide. Read more here or visit the tourist information office near the parking lot for more details. Entering the mudflats on your own without a guide can be extremely dangerous. Witnessing the tides – Seeing the tides roll in and out can be an unforgettable experience. A timetable of high and low tides is posted at the base of Mont SaintMichel. The most recent “tide of the century” was on March 21, 2015 and measured more than 14 meters high, completely engulfing the island with water. Going to mass at the abbey – Mass is celebrated every day except for Mondays at the abbey church and is open to visitors. Times and details about attending a mass service can be found here. Eating near Mont Saint-Michel – You’ll find several restaurants on the mainland (primarily attached to hotels) and a handful of other places to eat in the village below Mont Saint-Michel offering specialties like seafood, crêpes and the region’s famed fluffy omelettes. The restaurant La Mère Poulard near the main entrance of the village is named after Madame Poulard who is credited with creating this particular type of omelette for pilgrims in the late 1800s. Flights from Malaga to Paris average from 130 euros return. Tours to Mont Saint Michel with Paris City Vision start at 115 Euros per person.

How to renew home decoration and keep costs down Any time is a good time to succumb to a change of scene inside the home. It is not always possible to keep up with every trend but having a revamp every now and then need not cost the earth.

U

sually, transforming the decoration in the living room, kitchen, bedroom or similar can carry some concern for the budget. However, cost worries do not have to be an obstacle to your plans. There are many low cost alternatives to renovate the decoration in our homes. With time and some skill, the do-ityourself proposals are a trend that can add a personal imprint to any room, without having to spend a fortune. The range of possibilities is varied and, don’t worry, you do not always have to be super creative to improve the image of your home. Check out the following ideas...

Walls with Art Comprehensive reforms are the most radical and effective way to completely change the image of our home. Of course, they are not the best option

when it comes to renovating the decoration of our home for little cost. What can transform any room completely without having to struggle to make ends meet is to turn our walls into canvases. No, it is not that we have to be great artists and use the walls of our home as a masterpiece. It is, rather, to use them to add charm to the interior. Decorative vinyls can be an economical solution that will give a fantastic result in any room. Depending on the budget, the idea can be extended by adding sheets, large-format photographs or pictures.

A touch of chic Who has not felt seduced on occasion to become the star that changes costume behind an ornate screen? Over the years, the dressing screen has managed to carve out a space for itself in decoration and interior design. Its wide variety of practical applications have added value to the aesthetic contribution of a decorative resource that is presented in many versions. Oriental inspiration? In unconventional materials? With amazing prints? Whatever its design, the screen will not only add attractiveness to the room but can also help us create different environments within the same space.

Environmental Awareness Organic design or the increasingly growing commitment to recycling have turned raw materials such as pallets into great allies when renovating the home on a budget. Tables, sofas, racks, vertical gardens ... Whatever the idea we have in mind, pallets can become a great ally. Restoring old furniture, introducing pieces from another era with a renewed appearance in contemporary 12 THE MARKET PLACE

environments, is another formula that also works, as well as the upcycling design tendency that provides a new life to objects originally conceived for other purposes.

Introduce more textiles The change of seasons brings with it a array of ideas that, although they do not require large investment, can completely transform the image of our home. In the living room, for example, we can incorporate cushions with more appropriate shades for the current season, while in the bathroom, the towels are the perfect complement to enhance the style of the moment in your home.

Interior and exterior changes With the coming cooling or moderation of temperatures, patios, gardens, terraces and balconies claim their prominence. The exteriors also play an interesting role in the decoration of the house and, contrary to what may seem, changing their decoration for little money is more than feasible. Plants (with flowers always cause a greater impact) are economic resources with an incontestable aesthetic appeal. One of their virtues is that, in addition to your exteriors, they can also be included as part of the decoration of inside rooms. The touches of colour in the form of vegetation will completely change not only the image of the room, but also the atmosphere that you breathe in. If your budget is a little more generous, you can always resort to placing outdoor furniture to move the activity to your outdoor spaces when time permits.

Reorganize to reinvent Great savings when renovating the inside of your house can be made for little money by simply changing the distribution of furniture. Yes, a simple reorganization will help you to see everything with different eyes. You can even take advantage of getting rid of that old piece of furniture that has been collecting dust in a corner for years. So, like the trend for minimalism, taking an item to the charity shop can make your home look better. As they say, “less is more.”

interested one week don’t forget to take a look the following week. The Ikea app is a great time-saver too; you’ll be notified if the items you want to buy are in stock at your chosen store, thereby saving a wasted journey when there’s no stock.

Check Stocks Online If you don’t use the app you can also avoid spending time and petrol only to find that the items you need are out of stock via Ikea’s website. Search for the item online and check stock available at your chosen store. If you won’t be visiting on the day you check stock online, click on “ver disponibilidad estimada” to get an idea about how much stock will be available over the next few days.

Choose the Right Website and Preferred Language If you don’t live on mainland Spain, at the top of the home page choose the version for the Balearic or Canary Islands. If you use Ikea’s website in English there may be small differences with the Spanish version. For example sometimes the weekly promos are not shown.

Create a Shopping List Before You Go With a shopping list you can check for availability in store (some may have to be ordered). You can also print out, or save on your mobile, all product references. For some stores it’s even possible to sort by order of location in the warehouse.

Think About Which Day to Visit People tend to return items at the weekend, which become part of the clearance “oportunidades” section on a Monday. Shopping at the beginning of the week means more clearance stock and less people having picked over it!

What About Buying Online? Last year Ikea launched their online store with delivery only on the Spanish mainland. Delivery is not free, even if you collect the ítems: Click and Collect costs 9E at an Ikea store. Click and Collect at a pick-up point costs 29E, check locations here. Delivery in a province where Ikea has a store: 49E.

If you have both the Ikea Family Card and their Visa card you’ll get 10 months interestfree credit on your purchases. Additional cards for family members are also free and there’s no need to change bank. Of course the credit card can be used worldwide at any store that accepts Visa.

Delivery in a province with no Ikea store: 69E.

Go In Through The Exit Door!

Delivery takes from 3 to 5 days and is currently available only on mainland Spain.

Avoid the labyrinth in Ikea – it’s carefully planned to entice you to buy. Avoid temptation by entering through the exit door straight to the warehouse with your shopping list. If you do go to the sales floor, use the signed shortcuts (“atajo”).

Need to Return Items? Go First Thing in the Morning Time is money, and the returns queue in Ikea can take forever! To return items go as early as possible, save time and then go to the cafeteria for your free coffee and cheap breakfast (with your Ikea Family Card of course).

Let Ikea Sell Your Old Ikea Stuff Ikea furniture items such as tables, chairs, wardrobes, shelves and drawers can be sold at many stores. How does it work? Fill in a form online, include four photos of each item and indicate in which store you want to sell them. Ikea will take a look, let you know if they will accept them for sale and give you a valuation. If you agree, take your assembled items to the store. If the item isn’t assembled, Ikea will let you borrow the necessary tools. An Ikea employee will check that the item(s) coincide with the photos you sent. If everything is OK you’ll get an Ikea gift card for the value. Your items will be included in the clearance section for the same price you’ve been paid.

Discounts Available With Collaborating Companies Once you’ve chosen your local store, take a look in the Ikea Family section at the offers from partner companies; insurance, clothing, pet supplies and lots more. The number of partners varies by

New Cheaper Delivery For small items and accessories Ikea has a new service: Up to 5kg, delivery costs 5E. Between 5 and 20 kg, delivery costs 9E.

Need a Van? Around any Ikea store there tend to be a lot of people offering their transport services. But watch out! These unauthorised transport services are not insured and if anything happens to your purchases, or if they simply never arrive at your home, you won’t be able to make a claim. Ikea offers van hire with prices from 7E for 30 mins. Tip: even though the morning and afternoon tariffs are the same, the afternoon gives you 7 hours hire compared with 5 hours in the morning.

Take a Look at 'Yo Voy Por Ti' and 'Pikeando' No time at all? Take a look at Yo Voy Por Ti, they’ll shop & deliver all your Ikea items. They’ll even put together your items for you; which might be cheaper than hiring tools if you don’t have any. You don’t need to pay upfront, removing any risk for the customer. Check delivery rates for your area on the website. Pikeando is a website where people sell their second hand Ikea goods. Ads are free and you can filter by area or items. There are two main sections: “Escaparate” goods that are still in the Ikea catalogue (so you can compare prices and see if it’s worthwhile buying second hand) “Rastro” shows items no longer sold by Ikea. Disclaimer - neither of these companies has any commercial relationship with Ikea. The only thing left after all that planning is to go and enjoy yourself. Have fun!

The Oktoberfest beer festival held in Torrox continues to attract more people, and this year it was estimated that 50,000 attended. This has been highlighted by the Councillor for Tourism, Sandra Extremera, who praised the good organisation and success of the event which attracts many visitors to Torrox every September.

A boat with seven immigrants arrived in late September on the Torrecilla beach in Nerja. The landing happened at around 8am in the morning and the boat was intercepted by the National Police. Occupants on the previous boat had quickly fled into the town.

The area in the heart of Velez Malaga has been under construction since 2015, ever since the grocery market was relocated to the old bus station. The area also includes a small children's play zone, coffee shop and 6 different craft shops.

The craft shops will adapt their schedule to market events but will start by opening from 11:30 to 15:30 and 17:30 to 20:30.

The Torrox Oktoberfest Festival attracts 50,000 visitors

In mid September, the Council of Velez Malaga reopened the old Food market in the historic area of Velez Malaga as a gourmet food hall. The space has been transformed after an investment of 3 million euros that also had funding from the Diputacion de Malaga to make it possible. There are 11 gastronomic spaces in total including; tapas, vegetarian, fish, meat, wine bar, restaurant and dessert shop.

The area opens Sundays to Wednesdays from 12:00 until 19:00 except the coffee shop which will open at 7.30am and the bakery which will open at 8:00am. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays opening hours will be extended from 12:00 to 00:00.

This year there were more tented areas, a new space for children's entertainment and enhanced live music.

The man's body was taken to Malaga in order to perform an autopsy.

The councillor confirmed that the past success of the event continued with Bavarian Beer being at the heart of the festival and the classic bratwurst sausages, along with other local artisanal products that have made a great impact. She also said that other reasons for success were the ability of this event to attract people of different profiles, from families, social drinkers, young people and people from other parts of the province. The expansion of live music has been a major key to adding value to the event.

The Councillor, Jose Maria Rivas confirmed that negotiations had been ongoing from the beginning of the year in order to find a way to finance this project that is sorely needed. The Royal British Legion, Nerja Branch This year’s Remembrance Day is particularly special because it is exactly 100 years since the Armistice was signed ending the first world war ” the war to end all wars”…..except it didn’t.

T

here can only be a handful of people still alive who were alive then, so we are reliant on historical records to know what happened then and reading them or watching films of that time can be horrifying and emotive. When we start to think of the numbers of men who were killed in action or suffered life changing injuries or sickness we can only be enormously grateful for their sacrifice. That is why we should and must always “Remember them”. Our commemoration this year will be held at the Al Andalus Hotel on 11th November and anyone who wishes to join us can do so. Ours is purely commemorative and once again we are so fortunate to have the Remembrance Choir and its director Tom Robinson. In the past few years the choir has provided beautiful music which makes our day of Remembrance especially moving. Anyone can come along to this, but if you wish to join us for lunch please book with Vera. Tel 952967200 or Email: ozzybaldwin@yahoo.co.uk The Friday before Remembrance day is our Poppy Ball and it is being held in the Caves Restaurant and even in these austere times the price is staying the same as the previous 16 years!!! We enjoy canapes and drinks, three course meal, coffee with wine and water, followed by a raffle and dancing. This year we have music by the Flying Dolphins, and if previous years are anything to go by, it will be a great evening, an occasion to remember.

This year we also have the very established and talented singer “Laura Elen” who will sing some very relevant songs for us. Booking is essential for this and tickets are limited. So if you are interested please contact Vera as soon as possible. Two weeks before that there will be the annual Sponsored Poppy Walk. This is not a race but just a leisurely amble and a chance to chat and exercise with friends and acquaintances. For information please contact Dorothy Allen Tel 951834488 or Email: dallenpuntalara53@yahoo.com All these events and our Poppy boxes and donations from the public have enabled us to donate very generously to the Poppy Appeal and we hope to do so again this year. In the UK and indeed around the world there have been many events marking the 100 years centenary, and it is good to know that this event is not merely being celebrated by the older generation, there are many young people who are involved and doing incredible things to show their support for the Royal British Legion and its work. We also at the Nerja branch support the Personnel Recovery Centre in Edinburgh

Trumps Bridge Club On Thursday 20th September 2018 Trumps Bridge Club were welcomed by Antonio Roman (Director) to the Nerja Club Hotel. This is now the new venue for the club who will play there twice weekly starting at 3pm although players are expected to arrive by 2.45pm. Last year we ran a successful training course for directors and this year we are introducing a mentor scheme. The aim of the scheme is to offer pairs at all levels the opportunity to have a mentor to help them to develop their game. The club looks forward to welcoming people with possibly “rusty” experience who would like to play again in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

and have been pleased to donate to its very valuable work too. We hope to have the company of Major Hamilton once more who will bring us up to date with what is happening there. It is always reassuring to know that our donations are being used in the best possible way and our connection with the centre affords us a personal interest. Ours may be a small branch but we are very active and we enjoy much support from our members and friends, but are always glad to welcome new people to any of our events.

THE ARTS SOCIETY NERJA (Formerly Nerja NADFAS)

HIDDEN CANVASSES: STREET ART AND THE CITY A full illustrated lecture in English by Doug Gillen BA (Hons) Tuesday October 16th Note this is the 3rd Tuesday of the month not our normal 2nd Tuesday lecture day

The Cultural Centre (Casa Cultura) Calle Granada, Nerja, 6pm (Doors open at 5pm and tickets only available on the night) Visitors are most welcome. Entrance E10 (Members of other The Arts Societies E5)

Sponsored by Blevins Franks There’s more to the world of street art than Banksy. Hidden Canvasses is a beginner’s guide to the biggest art movement since pop art. From train writing in New York to interactive technology that brings murals to life, the concept of un-commissioned public art is a very different beast to that which it once was. Hidden Canvasses explores the key stages in street art’s growth examining the different elements and styles that comprise the scene with no rules. From the international superstars to the local underground heroes you’re guaranteed to leave knowing your Invader from your Aryz and who knows you might even start looking at the world a little differently.

About Doug Gillen Heavily involved in documenting the street art scene in London and abroad through his project Fifth Wall TV, and can offer a genuine insight into this world. Previously lectured for London Art and More, and when not filming he is an East End tour guide for Alternative London, specialising in culture and art.

Starting 1st October The Town Hall Women’s Department has organized a 9 month Spanish Course on Monday and Wednesday from 9 am to 10 am. There is also a Spanish Course for Norwegians on Wednesday and Friday from 12 noon to 1 pm. At the moment, the level is not yet stated. Possibly it will be beginners or intermediate. Maybe there will be more timetables and levels, depending on the number of participants. You have to submit a provisional application form at the Women’s Department, Centro de Informacion a la Mujer, at the school in Calle Diputacion 2 on the ground floor (opposite the Pensioner’s Club) or by email to: talleres@nerja.es or by phone on 952 54 8452. Men as well as women can attend the courses. The price is 20 euros per month. Each course must have a minimum of 7 persons, otherwise it will not be held. First you have to present the provisional application form at the Women’s Department. When filling in the form,

put the level of Spanish you want. You have to present a copy of your passport or identity card. A list will be detailed at the Women’s Department with the names of the people accepted and the dates when the courses start. There will also be a waiting list in case someone cancels. Those accepted to attend the course have to fill in the definite application form, giving your bank account number and filling in a bank order so the payment goes directly from your bank. Investigating Intermittent Fasting Fasting is nothing new. It has been a religious practice for centuries and Hippocrates advised medical fasting in 5th century B.C. Beginning in the early 1900s, animal studies demonstrated that fasting extended the life of rats. Animal research continued throughout the 20th century and suggested metabolic improvements as well. Successfully maintaining weight loss for a long period of time with traditional caloric restriction is possible only for a small percentage of people. How intermittent fasting works is not yet understood. Hypothesised mechanisms are based on rodent studies and involve the body’s circadian rhythm. Proponents suggest that restricting food for a long period of time decreases insulin levels; they claim that when the gut is allowed to rest, gut permeability decreases, followed by decreased inflammation. There are three kinds of intermittent fasting: Alternate-day fasting, alternates days of zero calories with days of unrestricted calories. Modified fasting allows 20 percent to 25 percent of estimated caloric needs on fasting days and unrestricted intake on non-fasting days. For example, the 5:2 diet. Time-restricting feeding requires a prolonged night time fast. In a 2013 article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, intermittent fasting was predicted to be the next big weight-loss fad. This appears to be the case: The 2018 Food and Health Survey from the International Food Information Council Foundation found 10 percent of respondents said they follow intermittent fasting. Proponents claim it helps people lose weight, sleep better, improve diabetes and even live longer. But does human research support these claims? A 2017 trial involved randomly assigning participants with a mean body mass index of 34 to one of three groups for one year: alternate-day fasting (25 percent of energy needs alternated with 125 percent), calorie restriction (75 percent of energy needs) and control (unrestricted calories). The alternate-day fasting group had a high dropout rate: 38% compared to 29% in the calorie restriction group. This group did not experience significantly different 44 THE MARKET PLACE

weight loss from the restriction group. Between the intervention groups, there also were no significant differences in blood pressure, heart rate, triglycerides, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, insulin resistance, C-reactive protein or homocysteine concentrations. LDL cholesterol rose significantly in the fasting group compared to the restriction group. A 2018 study of adults with Type 2 diabetes and a mean BMI of 36 compared the 5:2 Diet to calorie restriction for one year and found both interventions improved HbA1c, fasting glucose and lipid levels but did not differ significantly. While intermittent fasting appears to offer metabolic improvements for people with Type 2 diabetes, although not significantly different from those achieved by traditional caloric restriction, it may not be safe for all people with diabetes. Diabetes management is not the same for everyone. The safety of intermittent fasting for someone with diabetes depends on their medications and risk for hypoglycemia. Recent systematic reviews and metaanalyses of intermittent fasting in humans have found most studies to be of short duration with few participants and mixed findings. Intermittent fasting does not appear to offer superior metabolic or short-term weight control advantages compared to traditional caloric restriction. While there appear to be no health advantages, some people may find intermittent fasting easier to maintain. Side effects of intermittent fasting include persistent hunger, cold, irritability, low energy, distraction and lower work performance. Those at risk for disordered eating should not attempt any sort of fasting diet; fasting has been found to predict disordered eating and eating disorders. Meanwhile, multiple eating disorder organisations classify fasting as an unhealthy weight control behaviour. According to Tiffany Haug, MS, RDN, EDOC, who specializes in behavioural

health and eating disorders, “When restricting food, there is a higher dopamine release in the brain when you do eat, which increases the likelihood of binge.” Another population of concern is athletes. While research is quite limited in this area, one small study found intermittent fasting decreased speed among male athletes. Intermittent fasting could be risky for women of child-bearing age, since preconception is an important time for women to maximize their nutrient intake. “Going without food means going without energy as well as protein, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. In terms of nutrition, there is a lot to make up for on non-fasting days and it’s very difficult to catch up,” explains Elizabeth Ward, MS, RDN, author of Expect the Best, Your Guide to Health Eating Before, During, and After Pregnancy (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics 2017). Pregnant and breastfeeding women also should not attempt fasting because they need consistent energy and nutrients to support the developing fetus and breast milk. Ward says she would not recommend intermittent fasting to a woman who is pregnant or breastfeeding. “Premenopausal women have different metabolic expenditures depending on the time of the month. When you’re not meeting your needs due to fasting, you’re increasing your risk for bingeing and fixation on food,” Haug says. Researchers agree there is not enough evidence to recommend intermittent fasting at this time and that studies have lacked long-term interventions and follow-up periods. There have been few studies investigating the mental, emotional and social consequences of fasting. Additionally, researchers suggest that future studies should investigate cognitive and immunological implications, dietary quality and impact on the microbiome. Healthy Recipe: Miso Broth

Local animal charities C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) Happy Tales

RUDY The Costa Animal Society (CAS) has been kept on its’ toes caring for and re-homing several batches of puppies this summer. Rudy, the last of the six one-day old pups that were found in Maro back in March, finally travelled to his new family in the UK on September 14. The survival of such young waifs is a testament to the dedication of the CAS volunteers who bottle fed each one every two hours around the clock for a month until they were weaned and could be boarded in kennels. Not only did all six pups thrive but the first five found their forever homes fairly quickly in Spain. Rudy was the last only because he required a microchip, passport and full vaccines to travel to the UK.

Ready for Adoption Just as one lot of pups leave the nest another needy set of tykes came our way. At the end of August another animal charity in Nerja, APA, was burdened with three litters in the same week. This was clearly a challenging situation to manage, so in the spirit of cooperation the Costa Animal Society (CAS) agreed to house a group of five pups to help ease the burden on our comrades. Seve, Simba, Simon, Stig and Susie have reached the eight week milestone and have had their first puppy vaccinations so they are now ready for rehoming. There are four boys and one girl and each one has their own personality from shy and cuddly to playful and confident. They are petite pups and will remain small when they are adults, probably about Jack Russell in size.

Featured Dog of the Month: Portia

PORTIA Portia was adopted from the Costa Animal Society (CAS) over ten years ago. She lived a good life with her owner during that time but, sadly, her owner died last month so Portia is looking for a new home. The owner suffered from a memory related illness so Portia has been overfed for the last couple of years but she is otherwise in very good health and is currently on a diet while she is in kennels. Portia is a lovely, medium sized female who enjoys being around people. She also gets along with other dogs and is curious about cats but we do not think she would hurt one. 48 THE MARKET PLACE

SIMBA Another Simba is an older youngster who is coming up on his first birthday. Unfortunately, in this short time he has had three owners. Because Simba got off on the wrong paw in life he has not been given the proper training to correct certain puppy behaviours before they became issues. Simba loves to play with other dogs and is full of CAS - APA PUPS

Scruffs! Handlers and dogs, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) is pleased to announce that our annual dog show Scruffs will be held on October 14 at the Plaza de España in Nerja from 12.00 noon until 4.00pm, once again with the great support of the Foreign Residents’ Department of the Nerja Town Hall. All dogs owners are invited to enter their pets in one or more of the 12 classes to be judged during the afternoon. Entry is e5 per category or e12 for three categories with registration beginning at 12.00 noon. Pedigree and non-pedigree puppies (under one year), dogs and bitches will be judged in six separate classes, starting at 1.00pm. The fun classes will include a search for the dog with the waggiest tail, the best “sit and stay”, and the dog that is most obedient or shows off the best trick. Importantly, the judges will also be asked to choose the best dog and best bitch from dogs which have been rescued, and are now in new homes with loving owners. In addition visitors can participate in raffles, browse several stalls offering a diverse selection of handicrafts and delicacies, as well as fare on pub food and drink. Also, at 2.00pm there will be a parade of dogs ready for adoption. It’s a fun afternoon for the whole family and an important fundraiser for CAS. Come and enjoy the day while helping the animals. *In the event of inclement weather the show will be moved to the following Sunday. energy but as he matures he will settle into a calmer adult. He is a lovely dog who is very affectionate but he needs an owner with the confidence and patience to show Simba how to live in a home. If you could provide any of these lovely dogs a foster or permanent home or if you would like to meet any of the CAS rescue dogs and cats who are up for adoption please feel free to call Kurt or Laura at 95 252 1426. To find out more about helping CAS contact Vera at 95 252 9670. *Please note: The Costa Animal Society’s website can now be found at https://casnerja. webs.com You can also contact CAS via Facebook at / casnerja

CAS cat corner The Costa Animal Society (CAS) focuses much of its efforts on helping cats that

live on the streets, or in the right circumstances, rescuing a friendly feline who has been abandoned. Regularly CAS is called upon to assist stray cats which may require veterinary care such as sterilisation, evaluation and medication for infections or illnesses and/or the treatment of wounds. As always, CAS is in need of fosterers for kittens, especially, but not only, those that need bottle-feeding. Also, we do have several adult cats needing homes or foster homes. All of these cats are fully house-trained, neutered, and vaccinated. For more information on cats available for adoption see the Facebook group: East of Malaga kittens and cats.

CAS Shop News With the welcome arrival of fall, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) has restocked our shelves and racks with a fine collection of trousers, sweaters, scarves, boots, jackets and accessories. We also offer an excellent selection of books, bric-brac, continued on page 50

The most fulfilling part of working in animal rescue is when our dogs find new homes where they will be loved and treated well for the rest of their lives. Anywhere between 15 and 30 dogs are rehomed via TAIL each month. We are only able to do this with the fantastic support of our partner organisations and other kind people who dedicate so much of their time to the cause. Our aim is to place each dog in a suitable home as soon as possible. Sometimes this takes a few months sometimes much longer especially when they have arrived very young or in bad health.

These two handsome boys are brothers. They were found when they were only 10 days abandoned in a bin on Torrox Costa. Harvey and Dodger were hand reared at our refuge. They are now over 4 years old. Both dogs have tested positive for leishmaniasis in the past. However they have been well medicated and blood tests show that they are in good health. Both Harvey and Dodger love long walks. They would be best suited to experienced owners as of course they would need a little time to adjust into a home. They have lots of love to give. Dodger currently lives with a young female dog. Whereas, Harvey prefers his own space.

Brandy

Brandy is full of love for the people he knows well but sadly he was not well socialized as a puppy. So he can be nervous of new people and situations. In the kennels he shows this by barking loudly at strangers – unfortunately this is off putting to potential adopters. Brandy is a beautiful dog who would be best suited to an adult only home with people who would help him to gain confidence. Brandy also loves to walk although he is easily scared by busy traffic. He is a smart dog who would greatly benefit from some fun training. 50 THE MARKET PLACE

Cooper, Walter and Africa

Believe it or not Cooper, Walter and Africa’s mother was a podenco type dog of medium size. We can only guess that their father was a mastin type as they must have got their size from somewhere! These three young dogs just turned one year old. They arrived with their mother, Gitana, and 5 more siblings after being found abandoned in a storm drain. Beautiful Gitana and their siblings have all been adopted now but Cooper, Walter and Africa are still waiting for the perfect home. The boys are very confidence but their sister, Africa is a little more timid. They would make great family pets. As they are still young it’s a great time to get some basic training in – they already know ‘sit’ and they walk well on a lead but of course there is a lot more to learn… All of our dogs are rehomed fully vaccinated, microchipped, sterilized (where age appropriate) and with an EU pet passport. Adoptions fees and homechecks do apply. For more information and to see descriptions and photos of all our dogs currently ready for new homes please check out our website www.tailtorrox.es

La Herradura

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Nerja

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people.
