Requests for action to be taken against illegal camping on Maro Beach. In the early hours of a saturday morning in Maro, three local fishermen were setting up their rods when a large group of people began shouting at them, telling them to go away because the beach belonged to them and they lived there. Luis Jimenez, who is president of the La Axarquia Fishing Club, said he was injured when one of the men threw a stone and he was also bitten by one of their dogs. The Mayor has said she regrets the incident and has ordered the Local Police to clear the beach of illegal campsites.

The concerts have had great attendance, filling the auditorium and the outside area, both residents and tourists have visited the historic centre of Velez Malaga as a result. Demolition of home in Almayate owned by british couple At the end of August, Velez Malaga Town Hall went ahead and ordered the demolition of a rural property in Almayate belonging to Bob and Gillian Ward. They had obtained a municipal licence to reform a cortijo that was in ruins that they purchased in 2005, but during the works one of the walls collapsed and the Town Hall opened a case against them. The court in Malaga ordered the Town Hall to demolish the house of only 50m2. The British couple were extremely distressed at seeing their only home destroyed and could not even attend whilst the home was being demolished. A relative confirmed that they will continue to fight the injustice and publicise the act. They have said they will get in touch with the British Consulate and ask for help and failing that will take the case to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasburg.

Exploring Bruges in 4 Hours
By Jessica Infantino Trumble
Thinking of a mini break this autumn? Well how about a trip to the fairytale city of Bruges, packed with culture and of course the delicious chocolate and wonderful beer - what's not to like ? You can fly direct from Malaga with Ryan Air for really reasonable rates.
M
y first impression of Bruges was…interesting. I visited the city on a whim, and after stepping off the train from Paris, gauche and droit were suddenly replaced by links and rechts – all the signs were now in Flemish, a Dutch dialect that’s spoken in northern Belgium. I guess I missed that part in the guidebook? My second impression of Bruges was absolute delight. Once the initial “we’re not in Kansas Paris anymore” feeling wore off, I snapped a photo of the map in the train station and headed out to explore this storybook city. Located just about an hour north of Brussels by train, Bruges has all the ingredients of a fairytale-like setting: cobblestone streets, adorable shops and canals that run throughout this “Venice of the North.” Oh, and the chocolate isn’t half bad either. So whether you’re just passing through or decide to make Bruges a daytrip from Paris like I did, here’s a sample itinerary of some of my favorite highlights.
9:00 am – Market Square
Bruges is easy to explore on foot, so after arriving at the Hoefijzerlaan train station, I made the 20 minute walk to Market Square (alternately you
can take a bus). With its gingerbread house-like facades, the square is anchored by a bell tower dating back to the 12th century, and the 366-step climb to the top offers a great view of the city. At the bottom of the tower I indulged in some frite, Belgium’s twice-fried French fries that are extra crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. Delish!
12:00 pm – Cheers to Beer
Belgians take their beer seriously, and the country’s deep-rooted history in the craft has resulted in hundreds of varieties. After a busy morning, I grabbed an outside table at Het Hof van Rembrandt (also near Market Square) for a light lunch and another Belgian specialty.
10:00 am – Windmill Walk
Passing through Burg Square, the location of the City Hall and Basilica of the Holy Blood (a church that houses a relic of the blood of Christ), I continued east towards the outskirts of town. After about 15 minutes, I was greeted by the first of 4 cheerful windmills along a large canal. This being my first windmill encounter, I climbed up the grassy hill to get a closer look. If you have time, for a few euros you can go inside the first 2 windmills Sint-Janshuismolen and Koeleweimolen, which are still in use today.
11:30 am – Chocolate Fix
When in Belgium, eat chocolate! As I made my way back towards the centre of town, I wandered into several of Bruges’ adorable chocolate shops to admire the beautiful displays of products. Many even offer samples to customers, so you can taste several of their smooth and creamy concoctions firsthand. My favourite was a little shop called Dumon near Market Square, where I purchased an assorted box of chocolates to take home. I also treated myself to a dense, sweet Belgian waffle
10 THE MARKET PLACE
(called gaufres locally) drizzled with chocolate sauce.
For a more informative experience, I would suggest visiting De Halve Mann, the oldest family run brewery in Bruges, where you can pull up a stool or take one of the hourly tours, which includes beer tasting. Afterwards, I wandered through the idyllic Minnewaterpark with its swandotted canals, on my way back to the train station with the hope of returning to Bruges sooner rather than later.
Celebrating the life and work of local artist David Broadhead The British artist David Broadhead arrived in Nerja in 1987. He bought a house and started his lifelong passion of painting. He met his wife, Patricia Dale, in Nerja and they moved to Alcaucin where he continued to paint from the studio they had in the lower level of their house. During the 1990's David sold some work to the Hotel/Restaurant Carabeo 34 in Nerja. He was also commissioned to do drawings for the first 12 covers of our very own Marketplace magazine. He had many local exhibitions from the 90's onwards and as a consequence of this his work became known to local residents and visitors alike, attracting favourable attention from the local press.
O
n 5th August 2017 at 17:15. sadly David passed away. David's funeral was celebrated in Velez Malaga at the chapel in the Esperanza Crematorium, with friends and family present and with readings by close friends and family members. David was born in Barnsley, England and through his life had coped with the many Barnsley jokes that people like to tell. David completed his basic schooling and then went on to the Leeds school of Art as art was his passion. Then he had
two years with the military which was compulsory at the time. Following this he attended the Royal College of Art in London. He worked as a graphic designer and became a teacher of Art and Design. He was married and had 3 children. For ten years he was Dean of Art and Design and assistant to the Director of the Coventry College. He was handling redundancies and decided to make himself redundant as he was approaching 50. He had had a dream to paint for some years.
After moving to Nerja in 1987 and meeting his second wife, Patricia, David's work developed. He had been rather tentative, but then through the manager of the Parador, one of David's neighbours at the time, he had an opportunity to have an exhibition there. It was a success and was an encouragement. He continued to paint at first in a fairly realistic style but his work was never photo realistic. There was always a softer approach, more personal, with unnecessary details left out and more strength given through the use of contrast, dramatic darks against bright areas. He did many scenes of the Spanish ferias - people celebrating, horses etc. But his main interest was the female form singly and in pairs and groups. He always managed to come up with something new in this seemingly limited area, which was baffling, but he did. His work became increasingly less defined over the years, more left to the imagination and to something more spiritual or at least more provoking of the emotions. People even now are making inquiries about his work, and that must attest to his value as a painter. Works by David Broadhead now hang in private collections in England, Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Left: Two of David's cover drawings for Marketplace magazine. Top: David with some of his paintings.

U.S.A. and Canada. His work has featured in individual exhibitions and in group exhibitions here in Spain and also in France. In Nerja, David exhibited work at the Parador de Turismo, Studio 34, Galeria Municipal and in Torre del Mar, Velez Malaga and La Herradura also. One very memorable exhibition was in 2012 at the Galeria Municipal in Nerja. Local blog poster Ricardo Bajo Gavino commented that, "The paintings of women from behind appear to be pondering or looking at infinity. Sometimes the figures are without a definite face in which the onlooker can guess a deep melancholy. The painter also reflects country life and landscapes that seem to reflect a dreamy look rather than that of the realistic eye." Another Art historian and critic, David M. Phillips said of David's paintings, "They have what I would call "suggestivity" so that the viewer's imagination can run riot. They have an evocative quality and speak with the authority not of how much paint is on the canvas but of how much knowledge is caught."
Above: Part of David's exhibition in 2012 at the Galeria Municipal, Nerja. David's commissioned covers for The Marketplace way back in 1989 came about when David and Patricia met the original owners of The Marketplace and they realised that David had a very good background and skill in drawing. Patricia accompanied David on many of these life drawings. One such scene of young mums in short skirts and policemen with their hands in pockets was refused by the editors and had to be redrawn!
David will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by many, but his wife, Patricia, is determined that his work will live on and continue to be remembered and celebrated in the future. At David's funeral the following words were spoken which described the artist's visualisations of relationships perfectly between shape, light/ shadow and between the viewer and the artist, scene or subject;
"I would not paint a face, or rocks, or streams, or trees. Mere semblances of things.... but something more than these. I would not play a tune, upon the string or lute Which did not also sing, meanings that else were mute The art is best which gives to the soul's range no bound, Something besides the form, Something beyond the sound." Li Po (8th Century Chinese Philosopher)

Tricks to get the most out of a small kitchen In any small house, making the most of your metre squared floor space whatever it may be is what counts. Apartment buildings are getting smaller and it is especially important to maximise every corner of your house. So if you have a modest sized house and tiny kitchen, here are a series of recommendations so you can improve your kitchen space. Walls and Partitions Pulling down walls or partitions can be one of the greatest solutions to increase the size of space on a physical and visual level. It is usually an easy job that has dramatic results and can be as simple as removing a partition wall to open up your small kitchen to be a kitchen/diner. If you are planning this type of job, it is essential to think about a good smoke extractor in order to make sure cooking smells do not travel around the house.
Breakfast Area Is it important to have a small dining area in your kitchen but you are unsure how to incorporate it into your small space? How about under a window, taking advantage of that small area or any corner that may lend itself to it. Look at small or fold away buffets and tables.
Also, colours such as white or light colours will help generate the sensation of lightness and space. U Shaped Kitchen If you have a U shaped kitchen, do not fear because there are different options that will allow you to get the most out of it. A kitchen like this can look much bigger nowadays thanks to the lacquered finish of kitchen units and doors and using a light colour for the units and a slightly darker oatmeal colour for the floor tiles. Appliances in a small kitchen Try to find types of appliances that are specifically designed for smaller kitchens. Pick items that respect proportionality and are also mini 16 THE MARKET PLACE
sized. If larger items are chosen for a small kitchen, the appliances can take over the space and it will soon look crowded. For example there are dishwashers that are similar in size to microwaves now, and there are mini refrigerators. The key is to measure well the space that you have and shop around to find something that fits! Hanging Space, Cupboards and storage Use hanging wall space for your utensils and knives, either by using hooks, magnets or clips. Coming up with clever organisation in your kitchen cupboards can also help, a corner cupboard that opens with the one next to it will help so you get to use the whole space. Or how about fitting additional shelves in your cupboards instead of trying to pile everything on top of each other? Also keep any rarely used items in boxes on top of your kitchen cabinets. A vertical holder is useful behind a cupboard door to keep aluminium foil, cling film, greaseproof paper and ziplock bags. If you have room for wall shelves look at installing so that it frees up space in your cupboards/cabinets.

Car News
by Martin Ward
Audi Q5, U.K. Press event, Hastings Since the launch of the Q5 in 2008 over 1.6 million have been sold worldwide; not a bad result. Audi didn't have a SUV before the Q5, it just took off and got better as the years went on, and a success was born. Now the Mk2 has been introduced.
T
his 2nd Generation Q5 builds on the success of the Mk1, but offers so much more. The old one is pretty good but this new one is so much improved. The exterior design has been completely changed but it is very definitely a Q5, and looks every bit a Q5 from every angle and from a distance. But put the 1st Gen next to a 2nd and they look very different. The new swage lines that run from front to rear are very bold and distinctive, the large grille looks huge but does work. The new car has Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights and LED tail lights as standard on all models. The exterior styling gives the new Q5 an imposing road presence with distinctive visual appearance. But it is not just the exterior design that has been markedly improved, the interior has received a makeover also. There seems to be less clutter on the dash and centre console (not as though there was much in the earlier model) everything is in place and easy to use. The controls are so intuitive and it only takes a few seconds to work everything out. There is improved interior space for all five persons including increases in front and rear headroom and although the length has only been increased marginally it does feel a larger car inside the cabin. The boot access width has been widened by +54mm - not much really, but it does make a difference for loading goods, parcels or 20 THE MARKET PLACE
shopping. The whole of the interior looks and feels real quality, and the new car now has leather and heated front seats, 3-Zone climate control and cruise control with speed limiter as standard. The Audi virtual cockpit fully digital instrument cluster with 12.3" LCD high resolution is an option, and well worth the additional cost. At the UK event on the South Coast I only got chance to drive the 2.0-litre TDI. There were some petrol versions at the event but these were in demand. It wasn't that long ago that there were no petrols to try on these events but now petrols are being put on the fleet, the diesels are falling out of favour. The petrol engine in the Q5 is the 2.0-litre TFSi that produces 252ps and goes from 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds, so not a slouch. The car I drove produced 190ps and goes from 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds and it felt fairly lively and accelerated away well from traffic lights and road junctions. The Diesel engine is coupled to a 7-speed S tronic auto gearbox, and the two work well together. A very pleasant drive from Hastings to Brighton, and being sat fairly high up as you do in large SUV's, you got great views of the surrounding area. Very pretty it is too in this part of the world. The new Q5 certainly has a long list of really good standard equipment and an even longer list of options that could add many thousands of pounds to the cost if customers decide to start ticking some of the boxes - but a very impressive array of nice to have things, and some very clever safety equipment. In 2016 Audi achieved its best ever worldwide sales of 1,871,350 cars, a 3.8% improvement over 2015. In the UK sales increased by 6.4% year-on-year to 177,565 cars, and this trend is bound to continue as the company never stands still with new products and is constantly re-inventing itself. Prices for this all-new Q5 start at ÂŁ38,305 OTR and go up to ÂŁ51,200 for the SQ5 that is due mid-year. This new Q5 really does offer everything you could possibly need in a car: plenty of interior space and luggage room, it's very comfortable, has high quality throughout the car, is impressive to look at, has great styling and the choice of diesel and economical petrol engines. The previous Q5 was such a good all-rounder that it was thought it would be almost impossible to beat it - but Audi have managed it.

The Royal British Legion, Nerja Branch A 24 year old veteran called Matt came in June to tell our members of his experiences and injuries which happened in Afghanistan last year. At this early age this young man had experienced the horrors of open warfare, suffered injuries himself and watched while two of his comrades had been killed by an improvised explosive device. To look at him, apart from the hearing aid which he now wears, you would be unaware of his other injuries. But he will suffer for the rest of his life with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This condition can and is being controlled but periodically it may manifest itself without warning. Matt himself is now out of the Army and has got his life sorted. He is working and making friends, socialising and looking after himself. Many others are not so able and will need the help and support of the Legion throughout their lives. It is for men and women like them that the Legion exists and has done since its inception in 1921, and why these people should never be forgotten. We owe them a huge debt and should never forget it. They fought for our freedoms, to ensure that our values and way of life continues. We also heard from Major Hamilton about the work that continues at the PRC in Edinburgh which we support and Matt was able to reassure our members that their contributions to the PRC are extremely gratefully received
and put to the very best use. It is always good to hear that straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak. Here in Nerja we have a very sociable membership. We meet at the Nuavas Arenas restaurant in La Herradura on the 1st Friday of the month. (The first this year being on the 1st Sept) and at the Al Andalus hotel in Maro on the 3rd Thursday of the month. (Next one on the 21st Sept.) While members will be looking forward to meeting up again after our summer break, we would love to welcome new friends. I stress you do not have to be British, ex-service, of any particular religion or creed, just have a wish to join us and help support the great work of the Legion. I am sad to tell you that after many years of invaluable service to the Nerja branch we are about to lose two of our most popular members. Nick, a former chairman, treasurer, membership secretary, and PR person, and his wife are leaving Spain to return to England to live. They will be missed, but we wish them All the Very Best for the future, and thank them most sincerely for all their work and support during their time here. Our next event apart from the lunches will
News from TAIL By the time you read this we are hoping that the extreme heat and humidity will have relented somewhat. It has been a nightmare for our fosterers and in the Refuge to ensure that the dogs have enough cool air from fans and that they always have water available. Unfortunately we have had to curtail the midday walks for the dogs which has on occasion caused upset to the volunteers on holiday who have kindly made the effort to get to the kennels to help take the dogs out, but it was not just the sun’s heat but the possibility of burns to the dog’s pads from stones and
melting tarmacadam that was a problem. They did however in the main get out early evening. Here’s hoping this is not what ‘climate change’ is bringing! Tail continues to rehome at a greater level than previous years, still mostly to England and Germany, but we never manage to reduce the numbers coming in to the Refuge. A few weeks ago we had over 40 puppies (all of whom will grow up to require rehoming) and as we have written previously they cannot be accommodated in the main Refuge for fear of contamination from the older dogs there. Tail has just rented on a short term lease a separate property nearby – one of those strange campo homes that don’t make sense, but with a fair amount of land, solely for the care of these puppies, where they are cared for by a volunteer. A good result really but as always it costs, and for as long as people throw half a dozen puppies in a plastic bag into a skip Tail feels obliged to try every avenue. day of the anchovy
the festival of wonders - maro
22nd to 24th September in Rincon de la Victoria
Held between the 7th & 9th September in Maro
To end the summer season, Rincón de la Victoria celebrates the Day of the Anchovy to pay homage to the main ingredient of its cuisine. Over the weekend, traditional anchovies and other typical local produce can be tasted and other activities enjoyed, such as cooking contests, exhibitions and musical performances by the town's group.
ajo blanco festival
The celebrations have their origin in the sixteenth century and are held every year on 8 September, the feast of the patron saint of Maro, the Virgin of Wonders. On this day, the Virgin is paraded through the streets with rockets and fireworks, in celebration of the success of the crops during the year. The town’s youngest people, those who have made a promise or simply want to carry the Virgin in the parade, tie a scarf onto one of the throne’s poles to reserve a place, which is then respected by all. In addition to the procession, there are activities including traditional and modern music, beach barbecues, etc.

In this its second year, the festival is taking place on “El Playazo” beach, so that you’ll also be able to enjoy the sun and the sea.
at Almachar on 2nd September On the first Saturday of September, Almáchar holds its much anticipated festival in celebration of Ajoblanco (chilled garlic and almond soup), one of Malaga’s most important traditional dishes. This festival has a great importance for the town’s inhabitants and its streets become great outdoor galleries where you can enjoy a wonderful atmosphere. Throughout the day, this summer dish is offered accompanied by the area’s other traditional products such as wine and raisins. To close the festivities, there’s a traditional verbena (outdoor dance) and a big bonfire.

Sapphire
the Gemstone of September
by Alex of Gabriela Jewellers, Nerja
Gemstone Family:
Origin:
Sapphire belong to the gemstone group called ‘Corundum’ and is related with Ruby.
Sri Lanka, Thailand, Burma and Australia have the largest deposits. Sapphires also are found in other Asian countries (Cambodia, China, Vietnam), in Brazil, USA, Pakistan and in several African countries (Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe).
Colour: Sapphire exist in many different colours. The best known is definitely royal blue to blackish blue. Others are colourless, yellow, orange, purple, pink, apricot, green and black. Lesser known are the multi-coloured varieties (most found in Australia). The multi-coloured Sapphires are usually combinations of blue, yellow and/or green within the same gemstone.
Hardness: 9, out of a scale 1 to 10 (10 being the hardest).
Healing properties: Sapphire is known as the wisdom stone. It calms the mind and other active organs, brings peace of mind and serenity to you while restoring balance to the body. It helps to focus on the task at hand, with depressions and to release frustrations. Sapphire is also known as a stone for the blood, blood vessels as well as for eye problems.
Famous Sapphires Large Sapphires are rare and therefore are sometimes named similar to large diamonds... • ‘Star of India’, a 536ct star sapphire • ‘Star of Asia’ , a 330ct star sapphire • ‘Star of Bombay’ , a 182ct star sapphire • ‘Midnight Star’ , a 116ct black star sapphire
• ‘St.Edward’ Sapphire , an octagonal rose-cut Sapphire. It is the oldest Sapphire of the English Crown Jewels.
• ‘Stuart’ Sapphire, a 104ct blue Sapphire.
This is also part of the English Crown Jewels

The 'Royal Sapphire Engagement ring' is not the largest but a well-known Sapphire of the English Royal family... Lady Diana Spencer and Charles, Prince of Wales, became engaged in February 1981. Her engagement ring consists of 14 solitaire diamonds surrounding a 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire set in 18-karat white gold. It was created by jeweler Garrard and cost at the time, £28,000. The ring was neither custom-made nor unique and was, at the time, featured in Garrard's jewellery collection and available for anyone for purchase. Some believe Diana selected it because it reminded her of her mother's engagement ring. After Diana's death, Princes
William and Harry selected mementos from their mother's possessions. Harry chose the engagement ring, while William selected Diana's £19,000 yellow gold Cartier Tank Francaise watch. They eventually exchanged mementos. When Prince William proposed to Catherine Middleton in 2010, he gave her the ring. The ring has a deep personal significance for Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and her husband, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge. Prince William said at the time of his wedding, that the ring was very special to him and that giving it to Catherine was his way of making sure his mother didn't miss out on his wedding day. After the engagement was announced, some called the ring the "Commoner's Sapphire," a reference to the bride's nonroyal origins.

Manish's Zodiac predictions - September Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com
Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )
Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )
You seem to have energy to spare, largely due to enthusiasm about what you can accomplish now and down the road. Plans seem to be coming together, or this feels imminent. A special someone is likely to see eye-to-eye with you on career or life-path goals now as ideas to advance can be strong now, particularly when you and someone you care about put your heads together. This period signals a need to pull yourself out of overly competitive or demanding situations so that you can better attend to your inner world. Spiritual matters assume a little more importance to you, or you feel the need to get into touch with your deeper feelings on a matter. You also feel the need to develop the caring and sensitive side of your nature for the good of others.
Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)
You’re beginning to focus on layers of meaning and understanding. A connection with someone can deepen. You may focus on relationships, and finding balance, peace, and harmony in your personal environment under this influence. You can be self-assertive without coming across gratingly, and you may be in the position to lead others or to take the lead in a relationship. A stronger feeling of purpose can energize you.
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )
You are more inclined to get moving, take action, and handle problem areas now than usual. You may be bringing out your more active, initiating qualities now, and encouraging you to go after what you want. There could be rebellious feelings too. Personal and professional goals gain momentum, and you feel quite positive about what you can accomplish going forward.
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )
This period energizes you in the right direction, towards things that are good for you. You tend to naturally gravitate towards the right path, tools, people, or resources to accomplish something special, and you are in the position to make plans for your future. This month also stimulates your sense of joy that goes along with attending to your health, work, or routines.
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )
You can feel quite energized, and the trick will be to manage it or channel it effectively, as self-discipline may not match. You will need to overcome the tendency to daydream and feel overwhelmed and to put your compassion and wisdom to practical use for humanity. There can be an opportunity to enjoy yourself, an invitation, or simply a very pleasant, playful mood now. 28 THE MARKET PLACE
You can go at mental tasks, interests, and projects with enthusiasm. You might experience a stronger desire to communicate, connect, and learn. Your curiosity can be stimulated in a most pleasant way. There is some tendency to act on whims or to entertain unusual desires now. Group activities and cooperative efforts are in focus. Inspiring others, possibly through preaching or teaching, may be part of your life’s destiny. Your focus may be on your close relationships, examining them and seeing what’s working and what isn’t. You may feel more like yourself when you’re with someone one-on-one rather than with a bunch of people or alone. Your senses become a main focus, and you want to experience the world and life in a physical, tangible way. Touch, taste, smell, and hearing, and matters related to the senses, are prominent.
Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December ) You need to strip down to your soul, get real with yourself, and work hard to transform yourself for the better. Commitment must be made stronger, and those who go through relationships without any cares will have to care. You should emerge from this period with a stronger sense of what you want from your loved ones, and stronger relationships with those that stick around.
Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )
Your mind is sharper and quicker, and you come up with wilder ideas than usual. You think best in a group with other people to bounce ideas off of. If you’re dating someone, the relationship could be brought to another level, or could end. If you meet someone new, it could feel karmic. If you’re creative, you could feel more inspired by your emotions.
Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February ) You feel most like yourself when you’re broadening your horizons and expanding your view of the world. You don’t want to be in a box and want to explore. You may feel more adventurous, optimistic, and enthusiastic. You could get a new opportunity to further your career, or get recognition for work that you’ve done. You may decide to start a new path for your life and take things in a new direction.
Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )
You may feel more drained being around people, and need more time alone to recharge. You’d rather be in the background than in the spotlight, and put more focus towards your dreams and intuition. You may feel temporarily more down than usual, with the seriousness of life getting to you and making you more pessimistic. A transformation you’ve been working on could end, or a partnership agreement is terminated.

Health, Body & Soul Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle
Study finds fasting for 3 days can reboot your immune system Could you live without food for a few days if it was good for your health?
Eating this fruit will fix your travel constipation Let's be honest - flying messes with your toilet habits. And it’s not just you, there is a science behind it. Hurtling through the sky at insanely high speeds and altitudes can do some unpleasant things to your body, like the dry air wrecking your skin, gravity making your feet swell, and the lower air pressure making you bloated and gassy. Then, there’s the change to your regular bowel movements thanks to crossing time zones, and irregular eating patterns. Turns out, any kind of change in routine can trigger constipation. On top of that, you’ve got the challenges of dehydration and sitting still for hours, which only makes things worse. But keeping things moving could be as simple as eating a pear, says dietitian Rebecca Gawthorne, who reckons the juicy fruit is the natural solution to your travel constipation. “The mix of fibre and naturallyoccurring sugars in pears - sorbitol and fructose – helps to keep your digestive system healthy and prevent constipation,” But it’s about much more than poo! A healthy digestive system and gut helps you feel great and boosts your energy levels. It also helps your body absorb nutrients from food and builds your immunity. Important stuff when you’re basically in a sickness incubator with wings when flying. Just remember to eat them skin and all to gain all the goodness, as a lot of the antioxidants and phytochemicals are contained near or in the skin. In fact, pears are one of the highest fibre fruits, and we all know fibre is the gold standard for a happy gut. A medium pear contains 4.1g of fibre – which is more than five prunes (3.1g fibre). So when you’re prepping for your next holiday – be sure to add pears to your carry on list. Your bowels will thank you. 34 THE MARKET PLACE
Skipping meals is often used as a quick weight loss method but research suggests starving your body kick-starts stem cells into producing new white blood cells, which fight off infection. Scientists at the University of Southern California say the discovery could be particularly beneficial for people suffering from compromised immune systems such as cancer patients on chemotherapy.
tries to save energy, and one of the things it can do to save energy is to recycle a lot of the immune cells that are not needed, especially those that may be damaged.
The researchers who tested on both mice and human clinical trial say fasting "flips a regenerative switch" which prompts stem cells to create brand new white blood cells, essentially regenerating the entire immune system.
The study has major implications for healthier aging, where immune system decline contributes to increased susceptibility to disease as people age.
“We could not predict that prolonged fasting would have such a remarkable effect in promoting stem cell-based regeneration of the hematopoietic system,” said study co-author Professor Valter Longo, Professor of Gerontology and the Biological Sciences at the University of California in a statement. “When you starve, the system
“What we started noticing in both our human work and animal work is that the white blood cell count goes down with prolonged fasting. Then when you re-feed, the blood cells come back”.
Prolonged fasting forces your body to use stores of glucose, fat and ketones, but it also breaks down a significant portion of white blood cells. And while there is some evidence that the so-called intermittent fasting (all-day or partial-day fasting) has a host of health and weight management benefits, experts say more clinical studies are needed. According to some experts fasting carries significantly physiological stresses to the human body. It should never be used as a weight loss tool unless under medical supervision and even then it is unlikely that it would be for any significant length of time. Always speak to a doctor before taking treatment into your own hands.
Acne myths that you need to stop believing n greasy foods don’t cause acne, so no, a pizza or fries are not necessarily the root of your skin quandaries. n Drinking a lot of water doesn’t necessarily improve our skin, and neither does over-washing your face, if you’re prone to breakouts. nThe most common causes of acne, despite the old wives’ tales about chocolate and lying (ever heard that one?!), are actually hormones and genetics. nAdult acne in women is particularly common – it can often come out because of hormonal factors like ovulating and periods, which is why many women find that their skin follows a cycle, too. nWhat can influence though is effective skincare, and sorting through the sheer multitude of products available that promise a smooth, supple, wrinkle and acne-free complexion.

Which lash treatment is best for me? Long, thick lashes are clearly on trend right now, and have been for some time. Everywhere you look, you’re wondering if its someone’s real lashes or not. Some look so good, you just can’t tell! So it makes you think about having some kind of lash treatment for yourself - but which ones and what are the differences between all of them? At Beauty by Katie, we offer a range of different lash treatments – and we would be happy to help find the perfect treatment for you. During any consultation, we will discuss your eye shape, desired look and lifestyle to find the perfect treatment for you. Depending on what events you have coming up, you may be suited to different treatments at different times. (Please note, a patch test is required for all eyelash treatments; no test – no treatment!)
LVL - If you’re looking for a way to

At the start of your treatment, we will check the length of your own lashes and decide with you which length and style will be best suited for you. The lashes are measured in millimetres and range from 6mm-14mm, as well as having different thickness and curve to suit your own lashes. With these types of lashes, there is more maintenance required than any other treatment, to keep them looking good, but who wouldn’t want to wake up every day with beautifully extended and thicker lashes?! The controversial conundrum of food sensitivities Few food trends have become so pervasive, and so quickly, as the glutenfree movement. Less than 10 years ago, celiac disease was a mere blip on the radar of mainstream media. Then, TV personality Elisabeth Hasselbeck published The G-free Diet, President Bill Clinton promoted his post-heart-surgery gluten-free diet on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Paleo and Wheat Belly hit the scene, and a billion-dollar industry was born. At the time, the scientific community accepted celiac disease as the only adverse reaction to gluten — despite that individuals who tested negative for the autoimmune disease were reporting celiaclike symptoms (“foggy mind,” depression, ADHD-like behaviour, abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, headaches, bone or joint pain and chronic fatigue). Eventually new research suggested a spectrum of non-celiac gluten-related disorders that improve when gluten is removed from the diet — now known as non-celiac gluten sensitivity or non-celiac wheat sensitivity. Today, adults are increasingly self-reporting food allergies without a diagnosis from a doctor. Consumers around the globe are experimenting with elimination diets as a means to identify causal association with symptoms ranging from gut distress to joint pain, lethargy or depression. Most health practitioners, and registered dietitian nutritionists in particular, do not advocate unnecessary restrictive dieting. Nonetheless, many consumers are finding relief through elimination diets — and the scientific community isn’t sure why. Confusion over what causes certain responses to foods is a culmination of heated debate among medical researchers, vague terminology with conflicting definitions, gaps in research and, arguably, the inherent discomfort of “the unknown.” A food allergy exists when exposure to a specific food results in an adverse response in the immune system. Because a one-time reaction is not definitive, a criterion for a food allergy is that the immune response be reproducible. Symptoms range from mild itching and hives to severe anaphylaxis, which can cause difficulty breathing, dizziness, loss of consciousness or death. Most food allergies are IgEmediated, meaning the immune system identifies an allergen as an “invader” and overreacts by producing antibodies called immunoglobulin E. However, some food allergies — such as eosinophilic GI disease and protein-induced enterocolitis — are not IgE-mediated. A food intolerance refers to malabsorption in the digestive tract and does not involve the immune system. The inability to break down certain foods may be the result of enzyme deficiencies or reactions to naturally occurring chemicals in foods. Unlike food allergies (in which even a microscopic morsel of an allergen can cause an adverse reaction), food intolerances are dose dependent: the more one eats of the offensive food, the worse the symptoms — usually along the lines

of nausea, stomach pains, vomiting and diarrhea. There also appears to be adverse food reactions that do not fit current diagnostic criteria for food allergies or food intolerances. Some practitioners refer to these as food sensitivities and to compound confusion, the term has different meanings, depending on who you ask. These mysterious non-allergic adverse food reactions have many practitioners perplexed. For example, take sulfite sensitivity, which is more common in people with asthma, especially those taking steroid medications. Reported symptoms include respiratory reactions and asthma, hypotension, GI reactions, dizziness and hives. Currently there are no validated lab tests to diagnose a sulfite sensitivity and the mechanism is yet to be determined. Medical history, symptom diaries and controlled exposure to test for reactions (known as an oral challenge) are used to make the diagnosis. Other reports of triggers for adverse food reactions run the gamut, including various fruits and vegetables, grains, protein foods and dairy. Often these cases have already gone through allergy testing, excluded GI health conditions and exhausted diagnostic processes by physicians, including general practitioners, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists and allergists. Food allergy assessment tools — skin pricks or the double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge — are not applicable for the cases of food sensitivities since allergic reactions are immediate and often dramatic, while “food sensitivities” are delayed and hit-or-miss. Carbohydrate intolerances, such as lactose intolerance, can be diagnosed with a hydrogen breath test or fecal test, while blood tests, endoscopies or biopsies may be used to rule out other conditions. In an attempt to identify specific foods to which individuals are sensitive, medical testing companies have developed various proprietary blood panels. Some measure antibodies in the blood, such as the “IgG test” (which, since IgG is a “memory antibody,” actually only confirms exposure to a food, not a reaction to it). Others are centered on studying white blood cells as an indication of an inflammatory response — including the Alcat test and the enzymelinked immunosorbent assay, or ELISA. Recently, the mediator release test, or MRT, has gained favour among some practitioners, including a segment of registered dietitian nutritionists who then implement the Lifestyle Eating and Performance, or LEAP, diet based on the assay results. The MRT measures levels of cytokines, histamine, leukotrienes, prostaglandins and other mediators released from white blood cells after exposure to 150 foods and food chemical profiles. MRT supporters cite evidence indicating correlations between the immune system mediators, ensuing inflammation and risk of chronic disease such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease, as well as other conditions including GERD and cognitive decline. But while there is plenty of anecdotal vouching for MRT’s effectiveness in identifying potential sensitivities, there are no peer-reviewed, published studies validating the test. Still, Emily Fonnesbeck, says that practitioners need to understand clients’ underlying issues, such as disordered eating, that may be exacerbated by an elimination diet. Before she suggests food sensitivity testing, Fonnesbeck works with new clients to identify potential causes of the symptoms and address primary issues, such as the stress caused by not being able to pinpoint why they don’t feel well. “Even for clients who feel better on the elimination diet, it is difficult to know exactly why they are seeing benefits,” Fonnesbeck says. After all, the virtue of being more mindful about eating may in itself help ease physical symptoms. Vegan Buddha Bowl Recipe

OUR FEATURED DOG OF THE MONTH: PUNKI
Punki was a young pup who was found in the Nerja campo a couple of years ago and taken in by a young Spanish couple who already had two dogs. She lived happily in their garden and became part of their family. Unfortunately the couple has recently broken up. The girlfriend has taken one dog to her father’s house and another was rehomed to Holland but poor Punki has no place to go. She is a very affectionate two to three year old female who gets along well with other dogs and who loves human company.
HAPPY TAILS – FLYING PARTNERS On August 15, Agatha, the last of the pound puppies taken on by the Costa Animal Society (CAS) back in March, flew to her new home in Norway. Agatha and her siblings were rescued from the Nerja pound and were then cared for in 48 THE MARKET PLACE

kennels until they found more permanent places. She has now settled in with her forever family and is enjoying living in a real home for the first time in her life. An essential part of rehoming animals abroad is finding volunteers to be “flying partners”. This is necessary as no animal can fly without an accompanying passenger. The process of travel is very easy. If you happen to be flying to Norway, as in this instance, we will arrange the paperwork for the accompanying dog or cat with the airline. A volunteer from the Costa Animal Society (CAS) will meet you at the airport around two hours before take off. Generally there are only about four spots reserved for animals per flight and the airlines are eager to get this issued sorted. In most cases you will be able to jump the queue and then be accompanied by the volunteer to the security screening area where the travelling crate passes through inspection. From that point on you’ll only have to go through security and head to your gate while the animal is taken aboard. Arriving at your destination, you will be met by volunteers awaiting you in the arrival area. A hearty handshake, a few photographs and the dog is transferred to the local volunteers to begin a new life in a loving home. For more information regarding Flying Partners, destinations, airlines and procedures, please contact CAS on 952 52 9670 or via our website www.casnerja.org. *Another option for volunteer work is to drive the animal to the airport to meet its flying partner. If you are leaving from Nerja you can arrive at the airport in under an hour, deliver the dog, occasionally

Ossian and Sebastian are two brothers who were owned by an elderly Swedish man that lived in a caravan park for many years. He adopted both boys as young pups but as fate would have it the gent became seriously ill with kidney failure and had to fly home for urgent medical treatment. They are now 2-3 years old and each dog has an independent nature and confident/alpha personality. They prefer each other’s company but can live as a sole dog within a family. Flash is one of the 2 remaining pups from a litter of ten that were part of an urgent appeal in May where CAS worked with TAIL and Valle Verde to find places for all then waifs within 2 short week deadline. Unfortunately, in the process of preparing Flash for her trip to Norway she did not pass all the tests required to travel to this country and she had to wait for her second rabies jab to kick before undergoing a follow up test. Hopefully, she will pass this time and can fly later this month. Bruce is a lovely Jack Russell/ Bodeguero pup who was found by a couple that was holidaying in Frigiliana this summer. Unfortunately, he had no chip and no owner could be found. Bruce is a 6-7 month old male pup who loves

dedication and support of hard working volunteers.
APA NERJA ESTACION ESPERANZA APA is a Dog Rescue Charity in Nerja, near Malaga, in Spain. The charity was first set up in 2015 to rescue abandoned and unwanted dogs so they have a chance of a new life. APA has a dedicated Facebook page where information about all the dogs is posted: https://en-gb.facebook.com/ apanerjaestacionesperanza/
Rescued dogs require regular health checks, vaccinations, neutering, grooming, medicines and other treatments as part of their travel preparations, which can be very expensive. Thanks to the generosity of all APA supporters the vet bill has been credited with badly needed funds.
SPOTLIGHT ON ADOPTING With the dedication and support of all the volunteers APA Nerja provides hope to otherwise forgotten dogs. People like Debbie and Graeme Birch, who have adopted one of the many unwanted older dogs, little LoLo. APA Nerja thanks Debbie and Graeme for the kindness and love they will provide to LoLo in his twilight years. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT APA Nerja relies on the generosity and support from local businesses, friends of the charity and people who care about dogs. Recently a local businessman, Miguel Antelo, kindly donated gravel that was left over from a nearby construction site for the APA Dog shelter. Some of the regular volunteers helped to pick up the gravel and with the support of a local friend who provided his truck, the gravel was taken to the shelter where it will be used to keep the dog pens clean and tidy. Representatives from APA Nerja met up with Miguel Antelo afterwards, in Atalaya Bar, opposite the Police station in Nerja to say thank you. Atalaya Bar is now also supporting APA by putting one of the charities donation tins on its counter. PUPPY PARADE AT THE BALCON DE EUROPA Volunteers walked puppies from the APA Shelter on 4 July to the Balcon collecting nearly 100 Euros to go towards vet bills. Lots of people enjoyed meeting the APA puppies that day! Peter (left) won lots of admirers! GENEROSITY OF SUPPORTERS Donations to APA Nerja help to pay for vet bills as well as some of the day to day running costs at the shelter. July and August are always a busy time in Nerja with very many holiday makers – APA Nerja is proud to have volunteers who return year on year to walk the dogs from the shelter. This year a couple who live in Frigiliana, decided to hold a joint ‘Charity Birthday Party’, inviting their guests to make a donation to APA Nerja instead of giving them presents. Ben and Penny Poole raised an amazing 600 Euros, which has been paid over to the vets where the dogs are medically cared for. Thanks to Swedish friends of APA Nerja over 400 Euros was raised by ‘Swisch’ – sending money electronically. People from all over Sweden donated to APA Nerja thanks to the 50 THE MARKET PLACE
VOLUNTEERING APA is run by volunteers that live or just holiday in and around Nerja and the neighbouring areas. Volunteers help with the many dogs giving up their time to take the dogs out on a regular basis for walks, to help with their socialising, training at a nearby dog training school and to assist with their rehabilitation. Some volunteers become ‘foster’ parents providing urgently needed respite care and many foster families go on to adopt offering a ‘forever home’ to the dog in their care. APA also reaches out to other families in Spain and Europe to see if they would like to adopt a dog from Nerja. Do you think you could be a volunteer at APA Nerja, would you like to donate to or sponsor a dog in its care?.....or maybe you have time in your life to foster a dog or you are looking to add a four legged friend into your family? There are so many dogs in need, different breeds, sizes and age... please contact apanerja2015@gmail.com if you would like more information about the dogs currently registered with and looking for a forever home or how to become a friend and supporter of APA Nerja.
Thank you from all APA doggies!

THE MARKET PLACE 51
Nerja
was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Lake Viñuela
is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.

"We were searching for a Nissan Qashquai Diesel, around 3 or 4 years old, because they are much cheaper than a new car, but still nearly like new. We found some on the spanish market, but they were expensive and either former rent-a-cars or had loads of kilometers on the clock - or both. We read about Juergen’s service in the Marketplace and it seemed the perfect solution to find a good car for us because we don’t live here constantly and don’t really know much about cars (technically). We met one time in the beginning to speak about what car we wanted to have and then everything else we did by email, whatsapp or telephone. We chose a car in Berlin out of several suggestions from Juergen, and thank god the engineer was sent to check the car and the dealer - after his engineer’s report, which was dreadful, Jurgen called us and told us that he will not buy this car because of the bad score in the report and the dealer wasn’t trustworthy. After the weekend we got another car suggestion from a family run Nissan dealer, which got a report score of 93%. The car was picked up by a truck after one week and was in Nerja a week later. Just one day after it’s arrival it was taken by truck to the ITV and passed the technical inspection without any problem. We were kept up to date at every step of the process. Two weeks later the papers and number plates were ready - just in time for Jurgen to collect us from Malaga airport in our lovely new car!"
