September Sojourn - top things to do in Cadiz With temperatures cooling a little and the departure of the hordes of August tourists, September is a wonderful month to visit one of the most historic cities in Andalucia. Forget Cordoba, Seville or Granada; Cadiz really does have it all. And not just pristine beaches - although those are pretty heavenly too.
around the city's plazas with their beautiful fountains and cool passageways, as you admire the breathtaking buildings and views is a wonderdous thing. You can do as much or as little as you desire, the pace of life here is very slow but there are plenty of tours if you prefer to pack things in.
For any history freaks, this place is your idea of paradise. The city was founded by the Phoenicians 3,000 years ago and is one of the oldest cities in Western Europe. Cadiz had it's heyday in the 16th, 17th & 18th centuries when the Spanish Armada were setting sail to the New World and Christopher Columbus's voyages of discovery made the city one of the richest in Spain. Major trading families built palacial homes which can still be seen today. But before that the city was once inhabited by the Greeks, Visigoths, Romans and Moors.

8 THE MARKET PLACE
This stunning piece of architecture, for me is the epitome of all the beautiful buildings in Cadiz. The cathedral which was built in the 18th century (with money flowing in from the Americas) in baroque style, but because it took such a long time to build it also incorporated the neoclassical style, which can be seen in it's magnificent golden tiled dome which gives a Moorish feel to the building. The tombs of two famous son's of Cadiz can be seen in the crypt of the cathedral, Manuel de Falla (composer) and Jose Maria Penan (writer). After a tour of the cathedral you can climb it's poniente tower, where you can admire the incredible view and see the exquisite dome up close.
Hit the Beach - La Caleta, La Victoria or Santa Maria del Mar All the beaches around Cadiz are superb and many have won awards. They generally have fine golden sand, excellent facilities, are clean and have plenty of room to spread out. This is what makes Cadiz such a fabulous place to visit, as you get all the benefits of being in a city environment but with some of the best urban beaches in Europe.
La Caleta beach is at the far end of the peninsula and is a popular spot with tourists and locals as it really is a picture postcard place but it can get a little busy. If you want more room try some of the other excellent beaches like Santa Maria del Mar, which is close to the entrance to the old city (Puerta de Tierra) and excellent for body boarding or trying out surfing (There is a surf shop that offers lessons right oppostite the beach). Or how about La Victoria which is nearly 3km long and with facilities such as bars, restaurants, shops, sports, recreation areas and on a beach so large you won't have a problem escaping the crowds.
Visit the Torre Tavira Cadiz became famous worldwide thanks to it's watchtowers. They were what travellers by boat saw in the 18th to 20th centuries. Many citizens of Cadiz in that time were merchants, who each had their own ships with specific flags, each merchant wanted to see his own ship arrive in the harbour. In 1777, Cadiz had 160 watchtowers, nowadays there are 126 still standing. The Torre Tavira was designed in 1778 as Cadiz's official watchtower and soars 45 metres above sea level. There are ten flights of stairs and 170 steps onto a roof terrace with a supreme view of the city. On the level below the terrace is the tower's camera obscura which was installed in 1994. You pay 6 euros to go up the tower which includes a demo of the camera obscura, which projects a real to access it via a long stone causeway, time image onto a concave screen. It is which is like embarking on a real like seeing a moving photograph of the adventure (especially with kids) with the panoramic views of Cadiz city and bay. sea visible at either side. It is so isolated Visit the Castle San Sebastian from the mainland that for many years it was used as a prison. Sample some seafood!
With the city sat on the Atlantic ocean, it is expected that the fish and seafood restaurants are worth investigating. Lots of famous ones are set around the port area near the Plaza de Juan de Dios. Casa Manteca we found to be a very wonderfully traditional place, with lots of pictures of bull fighters, flamenco dancers and something truly fascinating everywhere you looked. The food lived up to its old school reputation of being one of the most famous bars in Cadiz. We enjoyed the roasted peppers with cod and prawns - yum! We also tried the outdoor food area in the Central Market, (Rincon Gastronomico) which served us some excellent sushi and a glass of the local wine. Another recommendation from a friend was restaurant and bar Sonambulo (it means sleepwalking)
which is on the Plaza de Candelaria right next to the Cafe Royalty with it's lavish decor (another must go place, maybe lunch or breakfast!). After walking into Sonambulo I just knew we were in for a treat, the decor was chic, retro and trendy and the staff were all super efficient, friendly and polite. I ordered a mandarin mojito cocktail and it really lived up to my expectations, I could easily have sunk another! We also ordered different dishes to share, a firm favourites were the thai styled prawns, the meatballs and the marinated tuna - which was to die for! Definitely one to go back to Cadiz for.
Conclusion Cadiz is a marvellous city, full of old school charm with a unique Andalusian spirit. It deserves people to take their time exploring, complete with map in hand, as around every corner of the place is something special to be found. Look out for old style tapas bars filled with locals and listen out for any spontaneous flamenco music. Generally what goes is to; eat, drink, saunter... and repeat!!

How to plan a cheap city break in Spain With just a little bit of planning, it’s easy to arrange a cheap city break to see one of Spain’s beautiful cities with our guide.
Text provided by MoneySaverSpain.com
When to go on a city break? If you want to save, you’ll have to travel when demand is lower. Check if there are any local events on the dates you’re planning to visit to avoid higher hotel prices. Don’t just think of local fiestas, such as the running of the bulls in Pamplona. Consider the dates of trade fairs and major sporting events for Barcelona, Madrid or Valencia.
Where To Eat?
Once you’ve settled on your dates, start to research hotels on sites such as LateRooms or Hotels.com comparing like with like. Don’t be swayed by more stars. This could just mean that the hotel has conference facilities that you won’t be using (but you will be paying for).
And don’t forget that most restaurants offer a fixed-price Menu del Dia; if the restaurant is a bit more exclusive this many be called “Menu Ejecutivo“.
Another possibility is AirBnB; take a look at options for your chosen city from grotty rooms to mansions with everything in-between.
Download Google Trips for an easy way to plan your daily walks, it can be used offline too.
If you want to try out the local cuisine but are on a budget, use online discount coupon sites that don’t require prepayment. Print out the vouchers before you go, if you change plans you won’t be out of pocket – search by location on Oportunista or UrbanCheck. If you’re interested in a specific restaurant try Restaurantes.com (available in English) to see if there’s a discount available and reserve without prepaying.
What To See? First stop: The local tourist office. It’s always a good place to visit when you arrive and they should be able to inform you about free events.
Sign up for a free city tours via Feel the City in Granada, Seville and Madrid. Find more on Google: input your chosen city and “free” or “cheap” and see what turns up!
Use Trip Advisor for general info (eg how far is the hotel from public Under 31’s get discounts with a Youth Card at museums. If you don’t qualify for transport?) and Booking.com for reviews a Youth Card, check online which days museums have free entry. Families with 3 by people who’ve really stayed there. or more kids should make sure they have the Familia Numerosa card and ask if a discount is available. How to travel? Many low cost airlines connect cities in Spain: Vueling, Iberia Express, Ryanair, compare prices on Momondo. If you’re driving to your destination, find the cheapest petrol stations and parking or download an app. If you’re going by train, read our guide on how to find discounts. In big cities take a look at electric car or motorbike rental, pay by the minute. Top options in Madrid: Car2Go, eMov and Zity. Alternatively read our post on Taxis, Uber and Cabify and remember that newbies generally get a discount on your first Uber or Cabify ride. 10 THE MARKET PLACE
You’ll see lots of ads for City Cards, but calculate whether they’re worthwhile. It all depends on your plans. Visiting theme parks, zoos, or similar can be expensive: use our exclusive 5% discount at Tixalia; no commission and you can change your ticket dates at no cost. The only thing left after all that planning is to go and enjoy yourself. Have fun!

The L shaped kitchens are a perfect solution for all kinds of scenarios. The secret lies in a distribution that is able to optimize the space to the maximum without comprimising functionality, taste and style. Are you looking for inspiration for your kitchen? Read on!

12 THE MARKET PLACE
1 provided by this type of layout makes it an ideal formula to satisfy the needs of almost everyone. The kitchen pictured above is a great example of this. The curve in which the kitchen area itself is located, softens the strong lines in the kitchen and it also includes innovative materials and the latest technology. For the worktop they have opted for high-performance raw materials in neutral tones that combine perfectly with the satin white of the rest of the furniture. The result? A very clear visual that, unconsciously, translates an unmistakable sense of order.
2. Combination of materials White kitchens, whether or not they have an L-shaped design, are always among the most desirable designs. The reason, essentially, is in the ability to create a bright and fresh atmosphere that, as demonstrated in this case, invites you to stand before the stove. Despite the modern lines of the furniture and the introduction of a stainless steel extractor that, together, give the room a contemporary aesthetic, the design introduces certain elements of the rustic style. continued on page 14

The formula used to achieve this fusion of styles is through the combination of materials, mainly in the flooring. The use of wood and tile takes the focus off the work area adding a unique personality to the kitchen.

3. L designs for small kitchens Among the main attractions of L shaped kitchens are, the ability to make the most of the available surface. The example shown is an ideal source of inspiration: a small L-shaped kitchen open to the living room, which also includes a small high table that serves as a dining room. Modern, attractive and functional. What more could you want?
4. An Industrial air for a kitchen with character Since the kitchen is a space reserved for inspiration, playing with different styles can make your design unique. Exploring the benefits of a trend such as industry is synonymous with modernity, betting on well-defined materials and rich textures. This is evident in this L shaped kitchen that combines wood, brick, stainless steel and some unique subway tiles in its decoration. The result is a composition with character that, in addition, allows it to incorporate a small auxiliary table as a complement to the room.

5. Open plan compositions Here is another example of cooking in an L shaped kitchen of the most inspiring. The richness of the design is not limited, solely and exclusively, to the possibilities offered by the layout. Beyond the organisation, the variety of materials used and the contrast between them acquires a notable role in this open plan design towards the living room.

The tiles chosen for the floor gives continuity to the space while the different coatings used on the walls delimit the different areas of the room creating an atmosphere full of style.
6. The charm of naturalness There are many options for your L shaped kitchen, most of them seek to satisfy the wishes of the user. If you are one of those who feel authentic devotion to the spaces they inspire through the naturalness of the materials, this design will probably provide you with good ideas to transfer to your kitchen. Dominated by a stone countertop, the traditional furniture has been replaced by a succession of shelves on which coquettish baskets sit, which, although they fulfill an organizational function, also play a key role in decoration.
7. A brilliant choice
14 THE MARKET PLACE
If what you want is for your L shaped kitchen to shine with its own light, how about paying special attention to materials and lighting? The perfect combination of both dimensions can offer you brilliant results like this one. The tempered lacquered glass at the front, added to a careful lighting project, gives this composition an incredible luminosity. Ready to make your kitchen worthy of a star?

The Deputy Mayor of Torre del Mar, Jesus Perez Atencia, and the councillor of EMVIPSA, David Vilches, visited the bus station facilities recently, where improvements have taken place. The general public had been demanding that the public bathrooms be reformed for some time and this job had now been completed. Another deficiency at the bus station is a shaded waiting area and the council are also taking steps to address this. The Councillor of EMVIPSA commented that the goal of cleaning the building and updating the bathrooms has been done. This is very important, especially at this time of year and with the volume of tourists that take journeys through the town.

The Jewellery Collection of Elizabeth Taylor Part 1, by Alex of Gabriela Jewellers, Nerja
Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor was born on 27th February 1932 in London, England and died 23th March 2011 in Los Angeles, USA. She was without any doubt one of the most famous female actresses of the 20th century. Liz was well-known for her brilliant performances in films, for her successful fragrances and as an active humanitarian. Also her private life has been closely followed by the media because of her 8 marriages to 7 husbands; Conrad Hilton Jr. (1950-51), Michael Wilding (1952-57), Mike Todd (1957-58), Eddie Fisher (1959-64), Richard Burton (1964-74 and 197576), John Warner (1976-82) and Larry Fortensky (199196). However, what many do not know is her passion for exquisite jewellery. She owned one of the largest and finest private jewellery collections ever seen. In 2002 Liz published her book ‘My Love Affair with Jewelry’ and in 2005 she even founded her own jewellery company, called ‘House of Taylor’. Elizabeth Taylor wore the world's premier jewellers such as Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, Harry Winston, Bulgari, and Schlumberger. She acquired her first piece of jewellery in 1945, a beautiful gold plate and stone brooch, which was a gift for her mother. She had saved up for quite some time to be able to surprise her mother with the piece. As she grew older she started to acquire some valuable jewellery, but it wasn’t until her third marriage to the American movie producer Mike Todd on the 2nd of February 1957 that she began her expensive jewellery collection. He loved showering his new bride with unique and 18 THE MARKET PLACE
breathtaking pieces of jewellery and needed no occasion to do so as he mentioned every day would be some sort of an anniversary… Then the unthinkable happened and his tragic death in a plane crash on the 22nd of March 1958 left Liz devastated. All of that made those items some of the most memorable and most valuable jewels…
The Diamond Engagement Ring:
A platinum diamond engagement ring by Cartier, holding a high quality, emerald-cut diamond of an amazing 29.4 carat. Mike proposed marriage to Elizabeth with this ring and according to her he insisted later that she would speak of 29.4 carat and not of 30, because saying 30 would have been vulgar.
The Mike Todd Diamond Tiara: This is an antique diamond tiara designed with nine scrolls and larger terminals spaced by latticework motifs. It has been made in platinum and gold and mounted with old mine-cut diamonds.
Mike gave it to her in 1957 with the comment she was his queen and as a queen she would need a tiara. Elizabeth worn it for the first time to the Academy Awards in the same year and even though tiaras were not in fashion at the time, she wore it anyway because Mike was her king. And for them, it was the perfect night because Mike Todd won the Award for ‘Best Picture’ for his movie ‘Around the world in 80 days’ that night. The tiara sold on Christie’s auction after Elizabeth Taylor’s death for a breathtaking US$ 4,226,500 despite it was expected to achieve a price of only around US$ 60,000-80,000.
The Mike Todd Chandelier Diamond Earrings: The earrings are made in
platinum with a girandole design and a flower design on top suspending three drop-shaped pendants from an openwork plaque of flowers and bows. The entire earrings are set with round brilliant cut diamonds. Liz brought those earrings in a boutique in Paris which had only been made with paste gemstones (glass). A few months later, back in New York, Mike changed all the gems for real diamonds in secret as a surprise for her and when Liz wanted to wear them for a party she noticed the difference in her earrings. These were her favourite earrings of the collection. She wore them for the first time in 1959 and then again 4 decades later in 1992 to the Academy Awards. These stunning earrings sold at Christie’s auction for US$ 374,500 after being estimated to sell for only around US$ 25,000- 35,000.
The Ruby Suite: This set includes a stunning diamond and ruby necklace, diamond and ruby earrings and a diamond and ruby bracelet by Cartier.
Elizabeth Taylor received this stunning jewellery set in August 1957 as a gift from her husband Mike Todd. Their daughter Liza was born on the 6th of August 1957 and shortly after he presented it to Elizabeth while she was taking a swim in their pool. Apparently it was a gift for swimming laps in the pool. He told her not to juggle her tiara as she wore it in the pool while he showed her the new ruby jewels. Liz said she fell into his arms and they spent a perfect day. She also wore the suite in 2001 at a New York event with Michael Jackson.

the first day 80 of the most desirable jewels were auctioned and achieved a total of US$ 115,932 Million. And on the morning after, the remaining 188 jewellery items were auctioned for a total of US$ 21,303,575 which made the jewellery collection the major part of the whole auction. This sale set a world record for the most valuable sale of jewellery in auction history. Also 6 other new world auction records were established: for highest price per carat for a colourless diamond and for a ruby; for a pair of natural pearl earrings; for a pearl jewel; for an Indian jewel and for an emerald jewel. The Jewellery section of her collection achieved the highest number of record items sold with a total of 24 items sold for over US$ 1 Million and 6 items
even over US$ 5 Million. This clearly indicates Elizabeth Taylor’s obsession with exquisite jewellery and her expert eye for craftsmanship, rarity and quality. In Part 2: October edition we will look closer into those amazing auction world records and the pieces of jewellery which achieved those unbelievably high prices, and their histories… In Part 3: November edition we will look at some of the pieces of jewellery Elizabeth Taylor acquired during her two marriages to the famous English actor Richard Burton. Some of them belong to the most famous pieces of jewellery in the world…
A few years after Elizabeth Taylor’s death the Auction House Christie’s in New York held the landmark auction to sell her Collection to benefit her AIDS Foundation ETAF and realized a combined total of nearly US$ 156.8 million with every single item sold. The auction was held over 4 days on 13th-16th Unique Handcrafted Gold and Silver Jewellery December 2017 and consisted of 1,778 items of breathtaking jewellery, fashion, decorative arts and film memorabilia. The Royal British Legion, Nerja Branch Thirty years ago this month, with the support of the Vice Consul in Malaga Brigadier Billy Beyts inaugurated the Nerja Branch of the Royal British Legion. The need for this had been recognised by Ian Smith, Vice Consul at the British Consulate, to cope with the growing numbers of British Expats who had arrived in the area after retiring, who wanted to enjoy the fruits of their labours in the glorious Spanish sun, as well as finding it somewhat cheaper to live here than in the UK. Many of them had served in the Armed Forces and there was a need for someone to consider their welfare. And so, Brigadier Billy Beyts and a group of fellow veterans formed the branch and over the years it has helped and supported many men and women when times got tough or they needed physical or psychological aid. We raise money through our lunches, events, Poppy Walk, Poppy Ball, and Remembrance Day and our Poppy Appeal Coordinator, Dorothy Allen works tirelessly all year round and is a familiar figure around Nerja. But, no matter how hard we work we still need the support of the public and really appreciate how generously you all contribute. With that in mind, we hope that many of you will consider

Please let me assure you that it is not only for members, ex-service personnel, or just Brits. It is open to anyone who would like to come along, so we look forward to seeing some new faces there.

DANNY MALAGA 1969-2018 Nerja lost one of its most colourful characters on 9th August when Danny Malaga, assistant manager at the town centre sports bar El Bosque died suddenly in hospital, aged 49. Danny (real name Gary Dancaster), had been serving drinks to countless locals and holidaymakers for many years. His funeral was one of the biggest seen among the expat community for some time, with hundreds gathering at the new Tanatorio Esperanza in Nerja to hear Brian Wise, manager of El Bosque, and Danny’s friends from childhood Chris and Nigel Matthews, paying tribute to his life. Behind the sometimes gruff exterior beat a heart of gold, as anyone who knew Danny quickly found out. He was an avid Aston Villa fan - many of the youngsters at his funeral wore Villa shirts in his honour – with a tribute paid to him in the programme and on the big screen at the match between Villa and Sheffield United on 1st September. Danny also loved his music, darts and his annual trips to Blackpool. He will be sadly missed. Dan Sherry

The blessings and curses of a high school teacher about to retire.. I believe it can be a matter of utter indifference to the majority of the population whether a teacher retires or not. In my case, after nearly four decades, first at the chalk-face, and lately at the forefront of the ICT world, having worked both at Torrox IES Jorge Guillén and at Nerja IES Sierra Almijara High Schools I have been blessed for several reasons. First, I have received incredibly talented students. Some of them are now professionals, businessmen or women, lawyers, judges, advisors, psychologists, doctors, nurses, university professors, mayors, teachers, waiters and waitresses… In the nineteen eighties we had very few students from the U.K. Nowadays state run schools are a cosmopolitan mix of migrants from all five continents. When I arrived in Nerja in the 70´s very few locals could speak English. Nowadays English is widely spoken in all tourist areas worldwide. Secondly, I have helped generations of Axarquían students learn and master the English language; a task in which I´ve received the support of the Englishspeaking expatriate community, both through individuals and through the different local clubs and organizations which have helped us in our school projects. I have arranged, planned and conducted school exchanges with a large variety of schools in England, Scotland, Sweden and Ireland... In Torrox I gathered the support of the Englishspeaking community in the area to make my teaching more meaningful and I organised the first exchange with English students ever at Torrox High School: it was with Keyworth Comprehensive in Nottingham. Some names come to my mind of helpful people who assisted me in my teaching: Iswel and Gwenda Watkins, who taught 28 THE MARKET PLACE
me the musicality of the Welsh language, the late Terry West, owner of the Branksome Railway Hotel in Poole, Peter Woolnough, Alan Salin, etc.. Lecturers from the English speaking community have been most welcome at my school for decades. I particularly recall names such as Dorothy Price, Robert Cohen, John Stockley, Jack and Hazel Weller, Ron Shaw, Lucille Allen, Max Pemberton, Graham Piggot, Marjorie Troop, Wendy and Tony Smith, John and Edna Bradley, Ron and Joan Sermol, Vanessa and Peter Burch, Trevor Francis, Elma Thompson, Chris Cherry, David Beattie, David Baird and Thea Braam, Vivian and Alvaro Pérez, Vivian and Marty Margulies, Geoff and Claire Oliver, Peter and Philomena Alonso, Jean and Michael Brunt, Michael and Peggy Rider, Chindy and Colette Sood, Johara Amel, Norman and Mary Batten, Robert Martin, Paula Anthony, Mary Webb and Mary Cleary, Stuart Harron, James and Nieves Moorehead, Jonathan Reason, Roger and Rosemary Darlington, Drew Launay, Rob Stokes, Roberta Kettel, Ian Mortimer, Julien Glazer and Margaret Batt and, last but not least, the late John Cook, who helped me in my lessons for over a decade…. to name but a few. We originally set up a school drama group in English and the first director was Stephen J. Howes, a Californian on a sabbatical year; then we had the assistance of Rhoda Brooker and Charles Cooper;
finally, Bob Harris took over the school drama group until he moved back to England. From all of them I learned new aspects of Anglo-Saxon culture which were never taught at University. With the school drama group we toured both Malaga and Granada provinces. We have received lots of immigrants in our state run school, in the eighties we had Lebanese students escaping from the Civil war in Lebanon; in the nineties we had an influx of European expatriates and since the year two thousand we have received lots of immigrants from Morocco, Argentina and Central America. Facing hundreds of teenagers every day has been a big challenge: they are young, energetic and new every year while we can see our strength and stamina dwindling as part of the natural aging process… Adolescents can be moody, anxious, horny, challenging, troubled, dysfunctional, conflicting, noisy, procrastinating, eager, indifferent, overtly hostile, suspicious, despairing, self-assured, self-centered, narcissistic, clownish, cool or uncertain, in a word DISRUPTIVE. Every class has its own chemistry: there are some groups you enjoy and look forward to. They know you like them and this reciprocity gives you energy. However, there are some classes so hostile that you cannot help looking at your watch. You sink or swim. You have to find yourself and develop your own work routine. I
have never avoided the most troublesome groups: those we call “diversified” but they stretch you to the limit of human endurance: sometimes a lesson in a ”diversified” group can look like a madhouse: They ignore the teacher, chat about their affairs, ask for a pass to go to the loo, rest their heads on the desks, throw paper balls, shout, make strange noises, chew gum, float paper planes, use their cell phones, fight or pretend to fight, study other subjects, eat or drink, play their own games or simply cannot manage their anger. I will most certainly neither miss them nor the endless staff meetings nor the students´ parents complaints about their marks nor the boring exam correction processes, nor the new passwords…Facing five classes every day: one person facing five classes of teenagers: one hundred and fifty ticking bombs. The classroom can be a place of high drama, and tension.. Every year some teachers are even attacked by the students or their parents in Andalusia. In spite of all this, my dream has been to become a master teacher. I have strived to reach perfection, to motivate and inspire my students but above all I have tried to have a good time as an educator as enthusiasm and motivation can be contagious. J.M.C.C.

Health, Body & Soul Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle
How to naturally produce more antianxiety and anti-depressant hormones
This is how a cold shower can help your digestion
Most people know by now that our gut has a whole brain of its own; it’s called the enteric nervous system and it's intrinsically linked to our other brain, the central nervous system, by a nerve called the vagus. Basically, the vagus nerve is vital for keeping our bodies healthy, networking the brain with the stomach and digestive tract, the lungs, heart, spleen, intestines, liver and kidneys. It is also responsible for calming the body after the stressed ‘fight-or-flight’ adrenaline response to danger we all have, which is especially relevant in today’s world whereby most of us live in this state for a large portion of our days. This is where your vagus nerve comes in. “Researchers discovered a correlation between high vagal tone and wellbeing, so the better your vagal tone, the better your health and stress adaptation is,” explains Dent. Low vagal tone in contrast has been associated with chronic inflammation. By stimulating our vagus nerve we can therefore improve our moods, our digestion, and our sleep, and decrease our stress and inflammation levels. The good news? This can be as simple as finishing your shower with at least 30 seconds of cold water each morning, or by jumping into the ocean and immersing yourself for a few minutes. The cold water on your face and neck ‘awakens’ and tones the vagus nerve, leaving you invigorated.
When it comes to friendships, quality trumps quantity, one true friend can have immeasurable value on your health. 34 THE MARKET PLACE
More often than not, we can have a positive impact on our mood by addressing the balance of hormones associated with our happiness. Serotonin One of the better known happy hormones, serotonin, functions as a neurotransmitter in the brain and helps us to feel happy, calm and content. What you may not know about this lovely hormone is that around 80% of it is made in our gut. There really is something to the phrase “gut feeling” – it’s hard to feel great when you are suffering with digestive challenges! Another common scenario involves a see-saw between serotonin and melatonin. Melatonin is our sleep hormone; it is responsible for sending and keeping us asleep. They work antagonistically, so when one goes up the other goes down. For some people though, they end up round the wrong way. If this happens, you might find yourself feeling down and sleepy most of the day. Endorphins Endorphins are also wellknown for their mood-lifting effects. They help to reduce pain as well as helping us to feel uplifted. Many people know of the link between endorphins and exercise, and indeed, they are stimulated by physical activity. Progesterone When we think about progesterone, we might only think about the role it plays in our fertility. But this powerful hormone has other biological functions in the body. Progesterone is a powerful anti-anxiety agent, an anti-depressant, and a diuretic, which means it helps us to eliminate excess fluid. Progesterone is supposed to be the dominant hormone in the second half of the menstrual cycle, known as the luteal phase, and during our childbearing years it is predominantly made in the ovaries. However, we also make some progesterone from our adrenal glands, and this becomes our main site of production after menopause.
Because our adrenals also make our stress hormones, chronic stress – which is extremely common these days – can compromise our adrenal progesterone production. So now that we know a little bit about some of the hormones responsible for our mood, what can we do to boost them? Bring awareness to your breath We can influence our stress hormone production via our breath. When we breathe diaphragmatically (long, slow breaths that move the belly in out and out), this communicates calm to our body, which supports sex hormone balance as well as digestion. Ensure excellent digestion Digestion is the cornerstone of our health as it is through digestion that we absorb all the nutrients from our food, many of which act as building blocks for our hormones. There are numerous ways we can improve our digestion such as chewing our food well, eating mostly whole, real foods (limiting or avoiding anything processed/artificial) and eating in a calm, relaxed state. Support liver function When it comes to how we look and feel on a daily basis, the liver packs a mighty punch. It is the key organ responsible for eliminating problematic substances, including ‘old’ hormones that we no longer need. Reduce your intake of ‘liver loaders’ (trans fats, refined sugars, synthetic substances, alcohol and caffeine) and increase your intake of plant foods. Movement The mood-lifting effects of exercise are well established, but many people still believe that they have to slog it out at the gym or run long distances to get the benefits. Move your body in a way that you enjoy! Also remember that incidental movement is highly beneficial so look for more ways to incorporate movement in your day.

Feria de las Maravillas, Maro 6th to 8th September The celebrations have their origin in the sixteenth century and are held every year on 8 September, the feast of the patron saint of Maro, the Virgin of Wonders.
Poetry Open Mic - Malaga throughout 2018 A space aimed at the young and the old, locals and tourists and all other beings who inhabit or visit Malaga and its surrounding area. Every other Thursday, the Poetry Open Mic at the Polivalente gets going at about 9pm, where it continues to give shape to a marvellous dream amidst verses, realities, silences, beers, vermouth, etc. If you turn up simply to listen, arrive and let yourself go. If you would prefer to recite something of your own creation, arrive and put your name on the list, with a maximum of two poems per person. And if what you want is to recite or sing something by another person, no problem. Just name the person or artist before starting. Share and experience this event, which gathers together a beautiful family of people. Don’t miss out! This night is one of a kind.
On this day, the Virgin is paraded through the streets with rockets and fireworks, in celebration of the success of the crops during the year. The town’s youngest people, those who have made a promise or simply want to carry the Virgin in the parade, tie a scarf onto one of the throne’s poles to reserve a place, which is then respected by all. In addition to the procession, there are activities including traditional and modern music, beach barbecues, etc.

Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )
This can be seen as a high point for you, and a period of great success if you’re realistic. You may come across as more mature, grounded, or responsible. You can pursue new opportunities, or create opportunities for yourself, and feel better about the work that you do. If in a relationship, you want to be closer to your partner, and if single, you want someone who will take the relationship seriously.
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
You can have difficulty dealing with issues in your friendships, with the groups you belong to, or with the dreams for your future. You’re a little hazy on what exactly has to be dealt with. Your love life may hit a few snags at the beginning of the month. After 21st you can get back on the right track, focus on your goals, and feel like your old self again.
Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)
Your energy can be calmer, more focused, and while it takes you longer to get things started, you don’t stop once you do. Instead of getting distracted easily, you keep with it until you get it done. If single, you want someone who will support you and be sensitive of your feelings. This can be a good time to improve your living space, especially superficially.
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )
Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )
You want to feel more comfortable, and not push yourself too far outside of your comfort zone. You enjoy spending time at home or in the places you know well, or with family or the people you think of as family. If in a relationship, you notice the little things with your partner, and show how you care that way. If single, you want someone responsible and reliable.
Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )
Letting out your creative side helps, and not taking things too seriously. Have a little fun with life and work, and you can open yourself up to new opportunities. You may come across as more vulnerable, understanding, or compassionate. You have the opportunity to improve your level of intimacy within a close partnership, or to begin a new one altogether.
Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )
Creativity is your friend, and brainstorming comes easy when you assert yourself. Delegation will get you further than micromanagement. Networking will bring the results you seek, and accelerate profound changes to your schedule. Being a resource will grow your inspiration. Everyone admires your originality and progressive stance. It’s time to shine. You can put yourself in a better position financially and emerge more confident, grounded, and secure.
This is a good month for ideas, though that may not feel like the case during the first half of the month. You have to eliminate some of the ideas you have first, and then you can focus on the good ones later in the month. You have to work on getting your head on straight, improving your outlook and mood, and having a solid life before you can deal with your relationships.
Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )
You can feel most like yourself when you’re pursuing the dreams that you have for your future.. You can benefit from your friends or from the groups that you belong to. You can connect with others mentally, and you say the right things and win people over with your words. A heaping dose of indulgence, coming right up! And this can also mark the end of some relationships as well, perhaps rather abruptly.
Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )
You can settle a dispute with a business partner, finalize a dealing with other people’s money (debts, taxes, loans, inheritances, joint finances), or finish up the transformation of something. This month helps you to form stronger bonds with loved ones, and improve the intimacy in your life. You’re compromising and fair, but have a hard time with people who want to make a mess.
42 THE MARKET PLACE
You’re more open to ideas that are unusual and different, and are willing to try innovative solutions to problems that you’d normally think were too radical. You are likely to take a logical approach to love, and don’t feel much like committing too much just yet. Spontaneity is key to meeting like-minded people and making new connections. The familiarity will seem uncanny. You can come up with big ideas, but you may not see any of them through, and just talk about everything that you want to do instead of acting on them. You might feel that love has been zapped from your life or inspiration has been hard to find. You would have lessons to learn about what friendship is to you, what you want to dedicate yourself to, and how to choose realistic dreams.
Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )
You can find opportunities for pursuing your dreams, making new friends, joining new groups, or taking up new causes. There is a feeling of filling every minute with activity… just be sure to balance work with play. Major changes in your career demand an innovative approach. You can begin to see rewards for all of the hard, smart work you’ve been doing and how responsible you’ve been.

Essential micronutrient - Iodine An essential micronutrient not commonly found in food, iodine is needed for the synthesis of thyroid hormones and is critical for normal neurodevelopment in utero, yet approximately 60% of pregnant women worldwide fall short of meeting the World Health Organization requirements The WHO also estimates that 31.5% of school-age children and nearly 2 billion people worldwide do not consume adequate amounts of iodine.
Roles in Health Seventy-five percent of total body iodine is stored in the thyroid gland, allowing it to make hormones necessary for physiologic processes including growth, reproductive function, brain development, healing, energy metabolism, central nervous system and healthy thyroid function. Iodine supplements are used to treat conditions including fibrocystic breast disease and inflammatory skin conditions and are used as an emergency treatment for radiation exposure.

Signs of Deficiency
Populations at Risk Pregnant and lactating women and infants are most susceptible to iodine deficiency, yet many people are unaware of the importance of iodine during pregnancy and early life. This can be especially harmful as fetal development can be affected before signs of deficiency become apparent. Cruciferous vegetables are high in goitrogens that can cause iodine deficiency, but people whose diets contain adequate iodine can safely enjoy these vegetables in normal amounts. Anyone, especially women of childbearing age, following a paleo-type diet could be at risk of iodine deficiency. Using iodized salt can help fill the micronutrient gap. People who eat a vegan diet may be at increased risk of iodine deficiency because they do not consume seafood or dairy. Iodized salt and sea vegetables are important sources of iodine for this population.
The WHO estimates that more than 30% of the world’s population has inadequate iodine intake, as measured by urinary iodine below 100 micrograms per litre. One Pan Roasted Mediterranean Cod
Nutrit and d ious elic appet ious izer Cod has such a light flavour that it’s great for people who don’t like a strong fish flavour. It really takes on whatever flavour you give it. In this case, that’s a buttery lemon garlic essence. Yum!
PREPARATION 1) Preheat oven to 450ºF/232ºC. 2) Cover sheet pan with parchment paper. 3) Using a pastry brush, lightly brush the parchment paper with some of the butter. 4)Make sure your cod is really dry and remove any visible bones using tweezers. 5) Place the cod fillets on the pan. 6) Fill in the rest of the pan with the asparagus, olives, capers, garlic, and tomatoes. 7) Brush the remaining butter onto the fillets and vegetables, making sure to cover the entire surface of the cod fillets. 8) Sprinkle everything with the salt and pepper. 9) Slice one lemon into rings and top each fillet with a lemon slice. 10) Place the sheet pan in the oven on the middle rack and roast for 10-12 minutes, until the fillets are opaque all the way through and flake easily with a fork. Cooking time will depend on the thickness of your fillets. 11) Zest the remaining lemon directly onto the dish before serving. 46 THE MARKET PLACE

don’t miss our fantastic tombola! For the uninitiated, a tombola is a game where when you buy a ticket - if the last number of that ticket is a 0 or 5, there will be a corresponding prize on the table. The prizes this year will be well worth the risk. We are also happy to announce that at 2.00pm there will be a dog walk with several animal rescue groups parading dogs ready for adoption. If a particular pooch catches your fancy, after a home evaluation you can begin a new life with a loving companion. Big fun!
HAPPY TAILS The Costa Animal Society (CAS) has been following Dobby and Doris’ story for a few months and at last Doris has followed in her son’s footsteps and flew home with her new Swedish owner in August. Doris is now enjoying her new life in the Swedish countryside and will be experiencing her first snow this coming winter.
RUDY
At around five to six weeks the pups were weaned and now all six have been rehomed with the rescuer keeping a male, Spot, the two girls and two other boys, Queenie and Storm, were adopted locally and the last lad, Rudy, has been reserved for a home in England. Rudy recently received his chip, passport, vaccines and first rabies jab and is spending the 21 day waiting period in foster care until his transport can be arranged to the UK.
SCRUFFS! Handlers and dogs, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) is pleased to announce that our annual dog show Scruffs will be held on October 14 at the Plaza de España in Nerja from 12.00pm until 4.00pm. DORIS & DOBBY
CAS also has an update on the six one-day old pups that were found in a Maro rubbish bin back in June. Hand rearing such young tykes is hard work requiring bottle feeding with expensive formula every two hours, around the clock for at least a month, but the responsibility was shared between the person who initially found the litter and a volunteer from CAS.
STORM
If you would like to meet any CAS rescue dogs and/or cats who are up for adoption please feel free to call Kurt or Laura on 95 252 1426. To find out more about helping CAS contact Vera at 95 252 9670 or Fiona via the website at www. casnerja.org or on the CAS Facebook page.
CAS CAT CORNER RUDY
The Costa Animal Society (CAS) focuses much of its efforts on helping cats that
live on the streets, or in the right circumstances, rescuing a friendly feline who has been abandoned. Regularly CAS is called upon to assist stray cats which may require veterinary care such as sterilisation, evaluation and medication for infections or illnesses and/or the treatment of wounds. As always, CAS is in need of fosterers for kittens, especially, but not only, those that need bottle-feeding. Also, we do have several adult cats needing homes or foster homes. All of these cats are fully house-trained, neutered, and vaccinated. For more information on cats see the Facebook group: East of Malaga kittens and cats.
CAS SHOP NEWS
Believe it or not, there is a reasonable chance that autumn will arrive within the coming months. Be sure to stop by the Costa Animal Society (CAS) shop to browse a fine collection of long pants, sweaters, scarves, boots, accessories, etc. We also offer an excellent selection of books, bric-brac, DVDs and numerous other items, all at crazy low prices. We are located next door to the Good Stuff Café in Nerja at No. 2 Calle Castilla Perez. Our opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 10.00am until 2.00pm. And, of course, we are extremely grateful for all of your donations without which our staff would have to learn how to juggle bowling pins, walk on stilts, breathe fire or find other ways to entertain you before passing the hat. CAS is always eager to hear from people who are interested in becoming shop volunteers. One four hour continued on page 50

CAS will provide fosterers with all they need: food, medicine, bedding, leads, etc., as well as advice at any time. Even if you are only here for few months a year, CAS would appreciate your help.
Despite the uncertainty of Brexit and the halting economic recovery in Spain, money is always needed to cope with the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. If you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful.
For general enquires and a no-obligation chat, contact CAS President Vera Newing on 95 252 9670. Also, Simone can answer any questions regarding rehoming animals abroad. You can reach her on 619 903

TAIL TORROX It is exceptionally rare in this country for Town Halls to gather any goodwill, it is usually tirades of insults following one scandal or another accompanied by claims of unimaginal sums of money being trousered by elected officials. So it is pleasing to voice approval of the decision by the Mayor of Torrox to open a small section of our beaches – down by the mouth of the Rio Torrox – as a dog friendly area. This means not just that the dogs can enjoy a paddle and if proficient a swim, but that if the family are going to the beach then the family may be truly complete. If you couple this with the previously reported sum of money that the Mayor has pledged to Tail for a neutering campaign (and to which Tail intends to raise a similar sum) within the boundaries of the town, then it would appear that for all dog lovers this Town Hall deserves approval. It should be noted at this point that Asociacion Tail is non political and we wish to, and do, work with persons of all affiliations. After all the dogs are unable to distinguish so nor should we!
Lastly, a sort of plea. We have on the stocks a promotional campaign, actually a very good one, which relies on a celebrity/ personality allowing use of their name. Do you have a friend or know of such a star? Are you such a person? We believe we have found approval from three, possibly four, but require twelve (one each month for a year). We are not asking for money, or to appear, nor to perform. No imposition will be put upon them. Thank you, you may make contact with Sue on 34. 629501173.
Tired old shop sign that needs replacing? We can often re-use/refurbish your existing sign, saving you money. Call us for a no obligation quote. 50 THE MARKET PLACE

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela
is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
