Nerja residents urged to help thwart town’s cash loss Nerja Town Hall has made an urgent plea to residents in the municipality to take immediate action to ensure that it does not lose almost a quarter of a million euros in grants for local services. The cash is awarded by the central and regional governments to enable the town to provide doctors and health services, road maintenance, teachers, police, public gardens and a range of other infrastructure and facilities. The amount of cash each town hall is awarded is based on the number of
residents who have registered their presence on the padrón, which is roughly equivalent to the UK’s electoral roll. Fewer people registered means less money available to maintain the town. Nerja’s problem is that around 1,600 foreigners, previously registered on the padrón, have failed to renew their inscription, as is required every two years. With around 150 euros awarded to the town for every individual registered, the town hall could therefore lose a total of around 240,000 euros in the next round of grants.
Success of Bodegas Bentomiz in Sayalonga
A winery near Sayalonga called Bodegas Bentomiz now produces 55,000 bottles of wine per year and is securing a strong reputation for producing quality wine. The winery is also run as a high class restaurant and owned by a Dutch couple who arrived in the Axarquia in the mid 1990's. They moved to the area to take advantage of some of the best Muscatel grapes in the world and started to give their wine making dreams a start. They spent a lot of money renovating their property and business and finally their dream has turned into success. Their business now employs up to 100 local people who supply the grapes and one of their wines, Ariyanas, can now be found on the tables of El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, which is considered one of the world's best restaurants.
Measuring earthquakes in the Nerja Caves Recent Earthquakes in the Alboran sea have seen many residents of Malaga area and the Axarquia a little bit nervous, as earthquakes can be notoriously difficult to predict. However earthquakes can be monitored and are via the Seismic Network of Andalucia. The Network is based in Granada but the only monitoring station in the whole of Malaga province is based inside the Nerja Caves. The reason it is located there is because the best place for seismograph equipment is deep inside the earth where there is no interference. The equipment captures and registers the intensity, duration and other characteristics of movements of the earth during an earthquake and then sends that data to different research centres throughout the region.

Nerja Foreigners Department - information
HELP YOUR TOWN, HELP NERJA. CHECK THAT YOU ARE ON THE PADRÓN (EMPADRONAMIENTO) POPULATION LIST The Padrón is the population list showing the number of inhabitants of a town. It is very important as the more people registered, the more services we will have, such as doctors, medical centres, police, schools, fire brigades, infrastructure and also the Town Hall will receive more money from the Government to offer services. All Foreigners registered on the Padrón have to renew every 2 years, if not, they will be removed. Currently, we have a very large number of Foreigners who have not renewed and this will mean an important decrease in the town services, unless by the 31st of March you renew your Padron. You can check if you have to renew your Padrón at the Town Hall Reception on the ground floor, left desk. See Angeles or Manolo and show any identification such as NIE, green Residencia, passport, driving licence, etc. Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 14:00. You can also check at the Foreigners Department. Any person staying in Nerja for several months over a year, can register on the Padrón. This means if you come to Nerja regularly and own or rent a property. You don’t have to be a Resident, you only need an NIE number. Registering on the Padron is free and has nothing to do with paying taxes or fiscal purposes. For Padron information please see Jacky at Nerja Foreigners Department on the ground floor of the Town Hall. She speaks several languages, such as English, French, Italian and some German. Opening hours: Monday & Thursday from 10:00 to 13:30. Tel. (0034) 952 54 8401. Please phone on Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday.

A Guide to Visiting Athens By Jessica Infantino Trumble
I
didn’t really know what to expect of Athens. In the months leading up to my trip to Greece the news media was oversaturated with headlines about the country’s debt crisis, but when we arrived we were more than pleasantly surprised. There was little to no obvious signs of economic distress, the people we encountered were beyond warm and friendly, the streets felt safe at all times of the day and the food was nothing short of amazing. Plus, we found that prices for attractions as well as food were relatively inexpensive, making the city an attractive option for budget travellers. Athens ended up being one of our favourite destinations in Greece, and was the perfect jumping off point before visiting some of the islands. I suggest spending 2 to 3 days to get a good first taste of Athens, adding more if you
enjoy cities or can’t bear the thought of choosing among the many museums. Here’s what you need to know.
Getting There and Around Chances are you’ll be travelling through the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport (ATH) or the Piraeus ferry port or a combination of both, and Athens’ metro system makes coming and going easy and efficient. From the city centre, it’s about 40 minutes on the blue line 3 to the airport and about 20 minutes on the green line 1 to the Piraeus port (there are also two smaller ferry ports, Rafina and Lavrio, so be sure to double check your ticket). Buses and taxis are other options to consider if you’re flexible on time and cost. All public transportation in Athens (metro, bus and tram) is covered by the same ticket, which is good for 70 minutes of travel as long as you validate it in the machine before boarding. Note that a journey to or from the airport requires a separate more expensive ticket, which you can purchase at an automated ticket machine in the metro station.
Metro station at the Athens Airport Athens is also a great jumping off point to other parts of Greece. If you plan on visiting any of the Greek Islands be sure to compare cost and duration between taking a ferry versus flying (Aegean Airlines has the most extensive network of flights) – sometimes spending a little more can save you a lot of time. In addition, one of the things that surprised me the most about Athens is how compact the city’s historic centre is (if you’ve been to Italy, think Florence versus Rome). That works out to your benefit as most of the main sights are easily reachable on foot. You can fill in gaps using public transportation, but you’ll most likely find that won’t be necessary if you strategically cluster your sightseeing.
What to See and Do Athens is saturated with so much cultural richness and charm that the city itself feels like a living museum. It’s no surprise that the top site for most visitors is Acropolis Hill (which sits high above the city and is crowned by the iconic Parthenon), and your admission ticket also includes free entry to six other archeological sites such as the Ancient Agora, Theatre of Dionysus and Temple of Olympian Zeus. Nearby you can also climb to the top of Mars Hill (the spot where the Apostle Paul preached to the Athenians) for a striking 360-degree view of the Acropolis and surrounding cityscape. There’s also a museum for every interest in Athens, the largest being the National Archeological Museum, which boasts 12 THE MARKET PLACE

HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane. because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples.
161
?
1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout.
CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take.
LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane,
Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout.
TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT)
Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes.

Vauxhall Astra We arrived at the Ellesmere Plant in Cheshire in the early evening and after we had dined we were given a very well presented and entertaining two hour presentation covering all the changes on the all-new Astra.
T
he Ellesmere Port Plant, which was a former RAF site, was bought by Vauxhall Motors in the early 1960’s. This site was originally an engine and sub-assembly centre supplying the Vauxhall factories at Dunstable and Luton. However the site was quickly developed as Vauxhall's small car production centre, with the first model, the Viva HA, rolling off the new assembly line in June 1964. From those early days small cars have continued being produced at Ellesmere Port including the Viva, Chevette, Astra and Vectra. This new Astra is no exception as it too is produced in Cheshire and over 3 million Astras have been sold in the UK since its launch 36-years ago. This plant employs around 2,000 people directly and many more indirectly, so is very important to the local community and those further afield too. The all-new Astra is slightly shorter, almost 5 cm, but through clever packaging it has more interior space. It’s also lighter with it having a weight loss of up to 200kg, depending on specification, so that’s quite a diet it’s been on. The exterior design is very different and very modern, but considering how much it has changed and the fact that every panel is new, you can still tell it’s an Astra from 100 metres away. The swage lines are distinctive and athletic and give it a sporty look and stance. The rear spoiler looks good but also serves a useful purpose as it helps with aerodynamics and gets air away from the car, making it glide through the air with more ease, which in turn helps reduce emissions and improves fuel consumption. The door mirror designs are very complex and very clever, as they too are more aerodynamic which not only help with reducing the drag it also ensures that there is less wind noise in the cabin. Talking of noise in the cabin, well, there's hardly any from anywhere - no wind, road and especially no engine noise. We drove the 1.6 diesel quite extensively
18 THE MARKET PLACE
and those we talked to on the press drive all said how they just couldn’t hear the engine at all - it was really very quiet in the cabin and even a bit spooky. It’s hard to understand how the engineers at GM have managed it, but they certainly have. It's probably down to quieter engines, more sound insulation, more aerodynamic design and better materials. We drove from Ellesmere Port to the Titanic Hotel in Liverpool in the dark as Vauxhall wanted to show off their new automatic lights, called IntelliLux LED Matrix lights. You press a button on the left hand stalk by the steering wheel, and then with cameras and all sorts of technology the lights detect if it is dark and if there are any oncoming vehicles or street lights and the main beam comes on and goes off to suit the conditions. Unfortunately the car we drove had a slight glitch... well, to put it bluntly, the system didn’t work. On a dark country lane the lights stayed on dipped and on main roads with oncoming traffic, the lights stayed on full beam. You would be better saving the £995 it costs for this option and working the lights yourself as this would be more reliable and safer. We talked to other people later and some had experienced the same problems. The next morning it was a drive from the hotel, down in to North Wales and on to Port Merion which was a fantastic journey, so pretty and scenic. We drove the 1.6 CDTi 136hp for around 150 miles on a variety of roads and according to the on-board computer it achieved 62.4mpg - which was a great result for the type of roads we drove on, considering that there was plenty of gear changing too. We thought that there was quite a step in ratios between 5th and 6th gear, which wasn’t that good on country roads, but on a motorway in top gear the fuel consumption would be even better. The model line-up is fairly simple: Design, Tech-Line, Energy, SRi and Elite. A sat-nav version is available on the SRi
and Elite models. There are five petrol engines including a 1.0 litre 3 cylinder, which we didn’t get a chance to test on the event, and there are four diesel engines. The power output on these engines ranges from 100hp to 200hp. The most popular engine is likely to be the one that we drove the most, the 1.6 litre CDTi 136hp, a sweet, quiet motor and it’s easy to understand why it is called the “Whisper Diesel”. We drove the 6 speed manual version which is standard with this engine. There is also a 6 speed automatic option available with this engine, although unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to test it. The interior is also much improved, much nicer plastic to both look at and touch. All the switchgear including levers, buttons and switches are up to a high standard, are good to touch and feel very solid. The handling was extremely good, but more importantly it was so comfortable, it rode over all the lumps and bumps in the road with ease and you could tell the engineers had spent time on UK roads getting the suspension and chassis exactly right for our pretty poor UK road surfaces. Prices for the all-new Vauxhall Astra start from £15,295.00 OTR. Many of the prices are less expensive than the outgoing Astra and some have decreased by up to £2,200. The new Astra is certainly an improvement on the outgoing model in just about every area. It still has plenty of tough competition in the C-Sector hatch market but with its good looks and solid build quality, it looks good value for money. This new car should still be able to sell into fleets and retail customers, just as well as it has for the last three decades. Summary stats: On the road prices £15,295.00 to £22,820.00 Petrol 1.0T 105PS, 1.4 100 PS, 1.4T 125 & 150 PS, 1.6T 200 PS or 280 PS Diesel 1.6 110 PS & 136 PS, 1.6 Bi-Turbo 160 PS CO2 82g/km to 146g/km Combined MPG 45.6 to 91.2 Gearboxes: 5 & 6 Speed manual, 5 Speed Easytronic or 6 Speed Automatic New options and features: LED rear lights – £195 option on Sri & Elite Vauxhall OnStar emergency assistance – £395 option but standard on SRi and above Bluetooth connectivity including audio streaming – Standard on all Parking pack (Advanced Park Assist, Side blind zone alert) - £595 options on SRi and above.

The Padrón: Why you should register As the Ayunatmiento is calling for all foreigners to renew their empadronamiento, I thought it would be a good opportunity to get information on what benefits the empadronamiento affords us. How does the Nerja foreigners department connect with their public? The Nerja Foreigners Department opened it’s doors in ’92, although Jacky has been working for the Town Hall since ’87. She told me the aspect of her work that she most enjoys is meeting all sorts of people from around the world. And she always makes sure to ask their reason for spending time in Nerja. The answer is constant: besides for the sun, slow pace, they all love our small and beautiful village. She explained how it is not always possible to solve all the problems and much patience is needed in dealing with a system that is not as fast track as the rest of Europe, due to much bureaucracy. But she does her best to steer people through. That is why she has copies of all forms needed when applying for NIE etc., saving new residents time.
Councillor for Foreign Residents, Jorge Bravo I also had the opportunity to meet Jorge Bravo who amongst other posts is also the Councillor for Foreign Residents. He enjoys working alongside Jacky and supporting her in her role, giving him many opportunities to practise his excellent English. Jorge, who was born locally, loves Nerja - not only for the sun, it’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. He explained that his love for socialising and experiencing the local cultural festivals are best done whilst enjoying tapas, which means you can often find him in La Puntilla. Jorge spoke of his dreams for Nerja and the projects planned ahead, which are dependent on the agreed budgets. He was especially excited about the “Green Ring” which is a proposed park to be built in the Chimenea area (site of the old abandoned golf course). He is very involved with the planning of new technologies for our area. The Rio Chillar is also a hot topic with a plan for self-proteciton, a collaboration between Nerja and the Junta de Andalucia, as more than 1,000 people a day were registered as visiting the river last summer. He hopes to achieve his goals and not disappoint anybody, but it is an occupational hazard, as the working term is never long enough in politics.
THE VITAL STATS The padrón is renewed every two years, and needs to be done by the end of March. This is very important as Nerja is flagged up as an important town due to the amount of residents. Should this figure drop below 20,000, Nerja will lose a substantial amount of funding from the central goverment (approximately 150E per person p.a.). This funding is applied locally in the form of doctors, health centres, schools, police, fire departments, social care, road cleaning and infrastructure, etc. The current registered figures for the largest groups of foreigners are as follows: British 2368 (1148 men 1220 women) Swedish 526 (260 men 266 women) Germans 473 (227 men 246 women) 20 THE MARKET PLACE

Terraces to enjoy throughout the year The Winter and early Spring with cooler temperatures should not prevent us from enjoying an outdoor life here in Spain. In fact this winter season has been particulary mild, what could be better than a nice evening under the moonlight , stargazing or relaxing on the terrace in the day reading a good book or hosting a fun family meal. All these activities are possible if there is a cozy covered terrace in which to enjoy the outdoors all year round.
Here’s to functioning patios regardless of chilly weather! Add a rooftop. Whether you choose a permanent, year-round construction or a seasonal canopy, a roof over the patio will help to contain heat in the cooler months. If possible, wire it with lighting to prepare it for darker evenings. If you do add a roof, circle it with curtains. You can easily block a breeze when it becomes too chilly, plus, aesthetically, their addition will give your covered patio a tropical cabana feel. Build a fireplace. It will change the way you experience your patio. If a fireplace is too large an investment, or your patio simply does not have space, light each seating area separately with small, portable candles. You’ll benefit from similar warm lighting without shelling out big bucks. With all the cool gadgets these days, you can even create a small firepit directly on your patio table. Just be careful when reaching for the salt! Heat lamps can warm a considerable area, helping your whole patio stay cozy despite dipping temperatures. If standing heat lamps seem too large and daunting, consider a more discrete version,

like a heater installed in the ceiling (top pic). Though you’d never know from simply looking at the photos, some of these wooden floors are heated. Heated floors can do wonders for a patio, keeping your toes and space extra snug. Warm up your space for the winter season. Peppering your patio furniture with blankets and pillows will help it appear extra cozy. Consider adding a rug beneath your furniture, especially for stone floors, which can be cooler. The rug will be more comfortable on bare feet and ground the look as a whole. Cushions can be upholstered in heavy-handed linen backed with Sunbrella to withstand the rain of cooler months, then cushions can even be left outside. When they are not in use prop outdoor cushions/ pillows on their sides so the water drains out instead of soaking up inside them. Texture adds visual warmth. I love the clever use of tall cactuses behind the outdoor soda. Add texture through tablescapes and mantle decorations. Even the look of rattan furniture helps to warm up the space. This patio has it all going on: comfy cushions, a cozy rug, throw pillows galore and loads of warm texture. Of course, the ultimate addition to a winter patio? A hot tub. The perfect spot to relax, star gaze and enjoy a cool, winter evening.

The main idea is to encourage children to start enjoying reading at an early age, so that they carry on this enjoyment into adulthood! What's so great about reading anyway? For a start, reading and writing are at the heart of learning and communication - essential for raising smart kids! There can be a more serious side because we read newspapers to find out about important world affairs.
Women's rights have improved over the past century, but still not enough and not everywhere. Females should be able to live equally and have all the opportunities to achieve what they want. But there is still trafficking, domestic violence, and rape. 98% of women in Somalia are victim to genital mutilation and there are pupils in Somalia actually raped by their own teachers. Semana Santa in velez malaga 20th to 27th March 2016 - Velez Malaga Historic Centre Easter time in Velez Malaga has been declared of National Tourist Interest and is undoubtedly rooted in steep tradition. Each year more and more people flock to the town along with hundreds of Velenos who are involved in the processions whether as horquilleros, penitents or in the bands playing bugles, drums trumpets etc. The overall appeal is that of a moving spectacle of music, passion and remembrance of the classic Easter story. You will not be disappointed in witnessing the 18 Brotherhoods of Passion carrying out their penance from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday.
El Paso de Riogordo Holy Week (25 Mar 2016 - 26 Mar 2016) Plaza de la Constitucion, Riogordo Holy Week is one of the most important times of the year in Riogordo. The processions and representations of El Paso on Good Friday and Holy Saturday are the most outstanding features. El Paso represents the Passion of Jesus Christ. This has been celebrated for the last 56 years and has been declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest. The re-enactment lasts approximately three hours and is divided in two parts: the events of Jesus' public life and the Passion. Both representations are characterised by their fidelity to the texts of the Gospel and the great care with which they are staged and the ambiance that is created.

Team SecoMUR: Offering a permanent solution to your damp problems It often comes as a surprise to ex-pats living in sunny, southern Spain that their home in the sun can suffer from an abundance of damp-related problems. The reality is that a lack of damp proofing in the majority of properties, coupled with a less robust style of construction means that water damage in various Steve Collison, Team SecoMUR forms is often a major issue. There are a number of temporary solutions available to hide the effects of damp, such as commercially available water resistant coatings and paints - but these usually just mask the problem rather than solve it, resulting in peeling paint and plaster a few months down the line. Team SecoMUR offers a number of permanent solutions, as explained here: RISING DAMP
ROOF TILES
By far the most common damp problem here in southern Spain, rising damp causes unsightly peeling paint and plaster, not to mention that unpleasant damp smell that is so common, especially in basements and rooms with poor ventilation. But Team Secomur have a permanent solution! Our patented formula is injected into pre-drilled holes, where it penetrates deep into the mortar and bricks to form a horizontal barrier, preventing moisture migration up the wall. It is extremely effective and guaranteed for 10 years.
When damp and moisture penetrates through porous roof tiles, it creates a breeding ground for green growth and mold spores. Water ingress can be reduced by 95% by treatment with SuperDRY, extending the lifespan of your roof tiles and protecting them - not just against water, but also the damaging effects of the sun. SuperDRY coatings are also self cleaning - microorganisms such as moss, lichen and general dirt are unable to attach themselves and are simply washed off by the rain. EXTERIOR FACADES ProPerla is a facade coating that protects your masonry from external weather damage. It is manufactured so that water droplets are unable to penetrate from the outside, yet air and moisture can pass from one side to the other, meaning your masonry is able to 'breathe'. This makes the coating particularly effective in areas of high humidity and in areas with sea salt penetrated air. It is available in a number of colours and remains both weather protected and colour stable for 15-20 years. SELF CLEANING

Air Conditioning: Your questions answered by CoolSolutions Q. Is air conditioning expensive to run? A. Modern inverters are very efficient in the cooling mode
and in the heating mode they are vastly more efficient than other forms of electric heating with the same heat output. There are two things you need to look at in the equipment specification; these are the SEER and the SCOP. They will have a number after them, the higher the number the more efficient the unit will be.

Fellowship of The King, Nerja; March Film & Tapas Evening The March edition of the popular Film & Tapa evenings at FTK in Nerja will be screened at 7.30pm on Friday 11th March at FTK’s premises in Pasaje San Miguel (around the corner from the main Mercadona.) A film that has divided viewers in the USA because of the heated nature of the pro-life debate there, Loving the Bad Man tells the story of a young and rather “proper” woman who is attacked and raped one night. Subsequently she discovers that she is pregnant. The storyline then follows the separate lives of the rapist and his victim until the woman, driven by a combination of her own convictions and a subtle underlying self-loathing, decides to contact the Bad Man. Her somewhat awkward and naive attempt at demonstrating forgiveness, coupled with sincerity and determination, prove powerful, even in the face of threatening criminality. The film displays some key moments of humanity whilst the varied - and sometimes heroic - decisions of the film’s different characters keep the plot grounded in the reality of the human predicament, while revealing the potential for triumph, forgiveness, and redemption, but without any tubthumping caricatures. Certainly the producers made every effort to be as
accurate as possible about the young woman’s ordeals and struggles as well; her parents family dynamics were not overlooked and neither was the gritty nature of prison life. Loving the Bad Man handles a very complex issue well, from the perspectives of everyone who would be intimately involved: the young woman, her family, her friends and the man who assaulted her. Pregnancy after rape isn’t as cut-and-dry as many would have us think. Indeed, two reputable recent studies of women that were raped and subsequently became pregnant found that 70% of women who were pregnant as a result of being raped carried the baby to full term. Of the 30% who decided to have an abortion, a significant majority later deeply
Mas que Arte
an event in 3 languages How to connect people who are interested in art, music, books and theatre, together for a social occasion? You do this by having a wonderfully varied all-day event including all of these things. Six women from Almuñécar got together and started with these questions. Who would like to join them and be creative? Who would like to join an exhibition of art and sculpture? Who could perform sketches? Who could play music, or sing or would like to dance? Who is the author of a book and lives locally? Who has special gifts or ideas? Where could all this take place? So, the 6 women used their skill and initiative and relying on their connections in the community this is what is happening. The event is called Mas que Arte and takes place on March 5th 2016 at Venta Luciano in Almuñécar. The management of Venta Luciano were immediately enthusiastic and cooperative. It is a whole day connecting all sorts of art. An exhibition of art and sculpture, music, theatre, readings and dance. Visitors will have the opportunity to spend time viewing the exhibition, and various "acts" and maybe taking part in dancing. There will be surprises during the day. There are 25 artists from many different 34 THE MARKET PLACE
regretted their choice, whereas none of the women who kept the baby regretted that decision, whether they brought the child up themselves or allowed it to be adopted. While the film does come down in favour of a pro-life position, that shouldn’t deter free thinkers from watching if they are willing to set aside their own biases. You are very welcome to join us. nationalities taking part, the common factor being that they all live in Andalucia. The entrance fee of 10 Euros includes a drink and a tapa provided by Venta Luciano. The bar will be open for drinks and snacks (not included in the entrance fee). The works of the artists will be for sale and many works will be under 100 Euros. There will be an auction of some art and all the profits will go to charity. Throughout the day there will be sketches and readings in English, German and Spanish. There will be musical acts, guitar, violin, choir and a band, and some line dancing (with the opportunity to join in). There will be surprises too! A simple and inspired idea - and altogether it should be an entertaining and enjoyable day.

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )
Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)
Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )
Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )
You may come across as more proud, warm, and friendly. Your creative self can come out, and you let your artistic side shine. There are no fences that can hold you in and no limit to how high you can fly. If you’re single, you can meet more people who pique your interest. If in a relationship, you can try to bring romance back into it. You’re more defensive of your beliefs, and if you feel threatened, you’ll defend them strongly. You can question your dreams for your future, and feel that they’re too unrealistic and out of reach, but this may not be a good time to make any final decisions about what you should do. You can let your emotions run more freely and give your head a break. You embrace what it is that makes you who you are, and want to be a unique, independent person. You can be more dramatic with your emotional displays, requiring more attention when you’re feeling insecure. You can finish a creative project, take a love relationship to the next level, or stop seeing someone entirely if you don’t feel it’s working out. You will come up with big ideas of what you want to do with your life. You can see the big picture more clearly, but the details are a little fuzzy. You can take an interest in something and want to study it further, You can become more interested in other cultures, and try to learn about other ways of living.
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )
This is a good time for going back to a career you used to work in. You can feel like your life isn’t expanding the way that you want it to and this frustrates you. You’re stuck in the dark, dwelling on the issues that hold you back. You can experience power struggles with someone, especially over money, and have issues with other people’s money.
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )
Your mind would be active and sharp and you come up with lots of new ideas. This is a good time for any mental work that needs to be done, though you’re not good at sticking with any project for very long right now. Smaller projects will get done quickly. You would be more loud and boisterous and more social and engaging with others.
You may come across as more of a perfectionist, organized and anxious. You would work quickly, efficiently, and you won’t stop until you get everything done. You would be good with the details, and can gather the facts you need. You can also feel stronger and more vital, and decide to try to improve your health through diet, exercise, or some other lifestyle changes. You’re driven to pursue your dreams. You want to get closer to attaining them and can accomplish one of them during this time. You’re more open to things that are unusual, unconventional, innovative, inventive, and futuristic, and want to push the envelope. You have more mental energy than physical energy and can do a lot of investigating into subjects before pursuing any of them. This isn’t a period to focus on the seriousness of life; it’s a time to joke about its kookiness and relish in its joy. You’re extremely optimistic and positive about life, feeling everything is going great. You want to expand your consciousness, and spending time learning something new, studying a philosophy or culture, or jet-setting to some foreign land. You’ll feel more ambitious, hard-working, and focused on success. You may seem more distant emotionally, too concerned with your goals and with where you want to be in your life. You have an easier time with travel, legal dealings, writing, and learning. You’ll have more passion for your dreams, and more focused on the future and may have a harder time living in the present.
Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )
You also have a harder time till 17th March dealing with mental tasks with a group of people or by yourself, and work better when you have one partner. From 17th it is a good time to talk about your relationship with someone, or to form a new business partnership. You will have an easier time dealing with your loved ones than usual.
Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )
You’re interested in many things presently, more curious than usual, and want to learn more about them. You may not stick with anything for very long though, so you will pick up lots of new, random bits of information, but don’t become a master at anything. You can be more outgoing, wanting to be more socially engaged and need a busier schedule.

can a fat restricted or high fat diet be effective and safe for weight loss?
F
or decades, dietary fat has been under the microscope as a nutrient that may heal or hinder health. Although the Institute of Medicine recommends an acceptable macronutrient distribution range of 20% to 35% of total calories from fat per day, some health experts advise consuming higher levels and others recommend much lower amounts. Two diets with opposing beliefs on fat are the oil-free, plantbased diet and the ketogenic diet. As its name implies, the oil-free, plant-based diet advocates an extremely fat-restricted eating pattern to stop, reverse or prevent cardiovascular disease. This diet does not allow any oils — even olive, which is high in monounsaturated fats that some studies have shown delivers heart-health benefits. The ketogenic diet advocates moderate amounts of protein, very low amounts of carbohydrate and high amounts of fat — even saturated fats, which some research has shown to be detrimental to heart health. This diet causes the liver to generate ketone bodies for energy instead of glucose. Advocates of low-fat diets are using the oil-free approach as a means to control calories from fat by getting calories primarily from plant foods; low-carb followers tend to jump on the ketogenic diet and strictly limit calories from carbohydrates while boosting fats to trim their waistlines. But what do we know about the safety, efficacy and implications of these two diets?
Going Oil-Free The premise of the oil-free diet is that all dietary fats — even unsaturated oils, such as olive, as well as avocado and nuts — can lead to heart disease. One of the cardiologists who spearheaded this plant-based, very low-fat approach was Caldwell B. Esselstyn Jr., MD, at the Cleveland Clinic. In 1985, Esselstyn began putting his cardiac patients on plant-based diets consisting of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, and excluding all added fats, including oils, dairy, meat, poultry, fish and nuts. Walnuts are the one exception; they are allowed in small amounts because of their omega-3 fatty acid content. Predicated on halting and reversing heart disease, the oil-free, plant-based diet has shown promise in some studies. A 2014 study authored by Esselstyn and colleagues in the Journal of Family Practice placed 198 patients with CVD on an oil-free, plant-based diet with intensive nutrition counselling in plant nutrition. After 3.7 years, Esselstyn and colleagues found that 177 participants (89%) who adhered strictly to the plant-based approach had a lower rate of subsequent cardiac events. A positive aspect of the oil-free, plant-based diet is that it treats a primary cause of CVD — poor dietary habits consistent with the Western diet, which is high in animal fats from foods such as butter, beef, cheese and ice cream. However, it eliminates the so-called “heart-healthy” fats, such as olive oil, nuts and sometimes avocado. Proponents of the oil-free approach also believe all oils, whether they contain mostly unsaturated or saturated fat, are harmful to the endothelium (the inner lining of the artery) and that this damaging effect is the precursor to disease. Thus, regardless of the type of oil, it’s on the avoid list. Since this diet is vegan, it requires supplementation for vitamin B12, an essential nutrient found primarily in animal products. For an omega-3 fat boost, this regimen allows 1 to 2 tablespoons of flaxseed meal or chia seeds. Some health experts may be concerned about the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins — A, D, E and K, as well carotenoids — on this extremely low-fat diet. Eating fewer than 20% of total calories from fat per day falls below the AMDR, which can create safety concerns for vitamin and antioxidant absorption rates. Without adequate fat in the diet, the risk for nutrient deficiencies rises. In fact, some researchers dispute the effectiveness of the oil-free diet approach. A 2002 research review conducted by Harvard professors Frank Hu, PhD, and Walter Willet, PhD, in 40 THE MARKET PLACE
the Journal of the American Medical Association examined 147 studies on the link between diet and coronary heart disease, or CHD. They concluded that “simply lowering the percentage of energy from total fat in the diet is unlikely to improve lipid profile or reduce CHD incidence.” The review points to three dietary strategies effective in preventing CHD: using nonhydrogenated oils as the predominant source of dietary fat; whole grains as the main source of carbohydrates, with an abundance of fruits and vegetables; and adequate omega-3 fatty acids from sources such as fish, fish oil supplements, flax and chia seeds or walnuts.
The Ketogenic Diet Approach Dating back to the early 1920s, the ketogenic diet began as a nonpharmacological treatment for intractable epilepsy in children and is still used this way today. Recent research has shown that regardless of age, seizure type or etiology, this diet appears to provide one-third of patients with more than 90% reduction in seizure frequency. The ketogenic diet has a wide following for waistline watchers, but medical supervision is important due to its extreme nature. Starting with fewer than 20 grams of carbohydrate per day, the diet’s goal is to eliminate the carbohydrate reservoir stored in muscles for energy and to force the body to use fat stores instead, through a process called ketosis. Putting the body in a state of ketosis has shown to decrease hunger and satisfy appetite longer, but doing so may increase risk factors for heart disease by elevating blood lipids, such as low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, or LDL-C. According to a 2005 trial published in Diabetologia, LDL-C increased by more than 10% in 25% of the participants who were on a ketogenic diet. Although in the short term the ketogenic diet may aid in weight loss, long-term adherence to this high-fat, low-carbohydrate plan may be detrimental to heart health and emotional well-being, as imposing severe food restrictions may create a stronger desire for so-called “forbidden” foods. The ketogenic diet consists mainly of fat from meat, poultry, fresh fish and shellfish, whole eggs, most types of cheese, moderate amounts of nuts, any oils, butter, cream and mayonnaise. To keep carbohydrate intake low, vegetables such as leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower and celery are the only source allowed — starchy vegetables, such as peas, corn or potatoes, as well as high-sugar peppers, onions and tomatoes, are off limits. To replace sugar, non-nutritive sweeteners such as stevia and liquid sweeteners with zero calories or carbohydrates are allowed. Different forms of the ketogenic diet exist, but the “classic” form is the most used and widely researched. In this version, fat is derived from foods rich in long-chain triglycerides, such as butter, whipping cream, mayonnaise and olive or coconut oils. continued on page 42

Protein intake is determined by minimum requirements for growth, and carbohydrates are restricted. The classic ketogenic diet ratio is 4 grams of fat to 1 gram of protein and carbohydrates, or 90% of calories from fat and 10% from protein and carbohydrates combined. Since this diet falls well above the AMDR for fat and restricts foods rich in certain nutrients, risks associated with it include elevated lipids in the blood, particularly LDL-C, as well as kidney stones, bone fractures due to low calcium and vitamin D intake, and constipation due to lack of fibre-rich whole grains, fruits and some vegetables. Since the macronutrient distribution of this diet is unbalanced, vitamin and mineral supplementation is often necessary, especially calcium, vitamin D, iron and folic acid.
The Bottom Line Significantly altering the amount of fat in the diet has many implications. The AMDR for fat exists to ensure a safe range of nutrient intakes and decrease the risk of chronic diseases. Balance in macronutrient distribution works best for maintaining a healthy body weight and overall health. As with all nutrition recommendations, the amount of fat an individual should consume is based on unique needs in relation to the person’s age, gender and activity level, as well as special health needs. It is the role of the registered dietitian nutritionist to guide clients toward a safe, health-optimizing lifestyle through personalized nutrition.

Local animal charities A.P.A.Ri.V. (Association for the Protection C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) of Animals Rincon de la Victoria) APARiV Dog Rescue in Rincon de la Victoria is always looking for people willing to adopt or foster their dogs. We are always looking for volunteers to help us with various things inside and outside the refuge. We also have a charity shop with many cheap second hand items for sale in Torre del Mar. In case you are interested in one of our dogs or in helping out please contact Alix at 610902019. Here is information regarding just one of our many dogs:
TIKO
This month it is Tiko’s turn. Tiko is a Spanish bodeguero. These smaller sized dogs are used here for the rabbit hunt because they can crawl into small holes. Someone probably didn’t think he was a good hunter so they threw him over our fence. Tiko was very nervous at first. Obviously he was not castrated and that had a lot to do with that. So when he got “done” he calmed down a lot. He still is a very active dog and loves to play. He also likes human attention a lot and always tries to climb on our laps. He was born in 2012. Who has a lap to spare for little Tiko?

Another caterpillar warning!
As was expected, the mild winter means that the pine processionary caterpillars season started early and these creatures will continue to be on the move well into March. The Costa Animal Society (CAS) has received reports of them appearing in all parts of the area, and the infestation has been so bad in parts of the city of Málaga that the council has had to send out fumigation teams. For those who are not aware, these creatures have a unique defence mechanism in the form of long white hairs on their body which secrete a toxin. If they are ingested by a dog or cat, these can cause a severe allergic reaction and possible death due to anaphylactic shock. The toxin is strong enough to cause severe itching and a rash to humans who simply touch either the caterpillars or the white nests hanging in the pine trees where the caterpillars hibernate during winter. When they fall from the nests, the caterpillars walk nose to tail in a long line as they search for somewhere to bury themselves, and from where they will emerge as harmless moths later in the year. If an animal comes into contact with one of these caterpillars, it may show signs of excessive drooling or frothing at the mouth, along with possible difficulty in breathing and/or spots on the tongue. In such cases, flush the animal’s mouth with as much water as possible and take it immediately to the nearest vet for emergency treatment.
Animal Behaviour Evening The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is hosting a discussion on animal behaviour on Thursday, March 3, in Nerja. It will be presented by the well-respected pet behaviourist Jim Stephens who holds a Masters Degree in Companion Animal Behaviour Counselling. Jim is Vice-Chairman of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Ireland and Secretary of the Giant Schnauzer Club of Ireland, in addition to being a behaviour consultant for the Irish Kennel Club. He also on the committees of the Siamese and All Breeds Clubs of Ireland and regularly gives seminars on a variety of cat behaviours and problems. Jim has authored numerous articles on dog and cat behaviour and has appeared on television and radio several times. He also writes a regular column in ‘Our Dogs’ magazine and provides educational seminars and training to various dog breed clubs and the SPCA in Ireland. continued on page 46

The topics of discussion for the CAS evening will include cat and dog conduct in general, including the rehabilitation and integration of rescue dogs into the family, as well as common behavioural problems of dogs and cats. The event will be held at the Fellowship of the King Church in Nerja (on pasaje San Miguel around the corner from the town-centre Mercadona and opposite the Guardia Civil) on March 3rd at 7.00 for 7.30pm. The entrance fee of E5 per person includes tapas, and all proceeds will go directly to CAS to benefit rescue animals. Space is limited, so please book in advance with Vera on 95 252 9670.
Puppies and Kittens The puppy and kitten season hit early this year and like all the charities along the coast, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) has been swamped with waifs looking for new, loving homes. Eight puppies were settled with new owners last month but CAS still has Mimi and Poppet and their three siblings looking for homes. By the time you read this, there will doubtless be several more available for immediate adoption. It is important to bear in mind that each of these castaways must be vaccinated twice, at a cost of E20 each time, so the immediate cost of the new arrivals can add as much as E1,000 to CAS’s annual vet bill, not to mention the cost of keeping hungry little tummies full! Therefore, CAS needs your donations of either cash, or clothing and bric-a-brac to sell in the CAS shop, now more than ever. And, if you could consider adopting one of these delightful puppies please contact Laura or Kurt at 95 252 1426 for a no-obligation chat.
unwanted clothing, bric-a-brac and even cash at the CAS Shop during their opening hours of 10.00am to 1.00pm, Monday to Saturday. Items will be sold either in the shop, or on CAS’s stall at the weekly Sunday morning car boot sale on the market site. The CAS Shop entrance is on calle Almirante Carranza, just off Antonio Ferrándiz “Chanquete”. The phone number is 95 252 3607.
Could you help CAS? The Costa Animal Society is always in need of more volunteer helpers in a number of areas, so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact! In particular, more fundraisers are needed to work with our team, people are required to help with the feeding of the cats at the numerous feeding stations maintained by CAS, and animal lovers who could undertake a monthly airport run are necessary to take animals being re-homed in northern Europe to catch their flights. In addition, fosterers are always required to take short-term care of animals until a permanent home can be found for them. Even if you are only here for few months a year, CAS would appreciate your help. For a no-obligation chat, contact Vera on 95 252 9670 for general enquiries. Simone on 619 903 815 can answer queries about airport runs in English or German. And despite the tough times, money is still needed to cope with the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. If you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful. Health Fact The strongest muscle in the body is the human tongue.
Helping young children cope with anxiety on their own Well-meaning parents of chronically anxious children do their best, but at times this can hinder rather than help the problem. These are some ways to help a child escape the cycle of being chronically anxious.
Focus on managing the anxiety, rather than eliminating it.
Nobody likes to see a child unhappy, but the best way to overcome the anxiety is not to remove the triggers. Aid them in learning to tolerate their anxiety and in turn function as best that they can. As a result of this, they will become less anxious over time.
Man patents natural, non-toxic pesticide that could make many agricultural chemicals obsolete In a nutshell, mycologist and permaculture advocate Paul Stamets has discovered a chemical-free method to trick insects into gathering, stockpiling and eating insect-killing (entomopathogenic) fungi, which then take over their bodies and devour them. As Stamets notes in his patent, chemical pesticides also produce whole new problems for the agricultural systems they are supposedly benefiting. Because most pesticides are broad-acting poisons that are simply sprayed over wide areas, they also kill beneficial insects such as pollinators and predators. Because pests tend to recolonize faster than their predators do, this means that insecticide use actually worsens pest problems. With his 2006 patent, Stamets made a discovery solving the other part of the problem: how to get insect pests to take the bait. Stamets discovered that early in their life cycle, before producing spores, entomopathogenic fungi are actually highly attractive to their favoured prey. Target insects exposed to these fungi actually change their behaviour, grazing on and even tending to the fungi. Social insects may gather them and take them back to their nests. This contact is sufficient for the insects to become infected with the fungi, which then grow inside them and devour them. Entomopathogenic fungi in their pre-sporulation stage can be cultivated artificially on nearly any plant material, including wood or agricultural waste. They can then be dried and turned into pellets that can then be re-hydrated just before use.
Try to not avoid anxiety triggers. This might make the child feel better short term, but it reinforces anxiety in the long run. For instance, if a child starts crying when faced with a trigger of their anxiety and the parent picks them up and removes them from the situation, they will use it as a coping mechanism and this can potentially repeat itself. It is not possible to promise a child that their fears are not realistic, such as failing a test. You can, however, let them know that you believe they will be okay, and that they will be able to manage it. As the child faces their fears, the anxiety level will drop the next time they are faced with the trigger.
Validating a child’s feelings doesn’t always mean that it is an agreement. It is important to not only listen, but also be empathetic. Help them understand why they’re feeling the way that they are, and encourage them to face their fears. You want them to know that when they face their fears, you’ll be there to support them.
Walnuts inhibit cancer development, slow its growth, walnuts each day could and kill cancer cells cut in half the risk of If you're nuts about walnuts, you could be doing your health a huge favour. Several research studies have revealed that the benefits of walnuts include the ability to inhibit cancer development and even initiate the death of cancer cells. The secret to the cancer-killing properties of walnuts is that they contain several rare and potent phytonutrients that are found in very few other foods. These unique compounds, which are all known for their strong cancer-inhibiting properties, include the tannin tellimagrandin, the quinone juglone, and the flavonol morin4. Several published studies have identified walnuts as bearing unique cancer-fighting qualities. For example, researchers at UC Davis and other institutions have uncovered that diets rich in whole walnuts, or even walnut oil, have the ability to slow prostate cancer growth in mice. In other studies, researchers determined that two handfuls of

breast cancer and tumor growth. It is believed that walnuts can shrink levels of the hormone IGF-1, known to play a key role in development of both prostate and breast cancer. Researchers have also found that both walnuts and walnut oil reduced cholesterol and increased insulin sensitivity, making them valuable in the fight against heart disease and diabetes. For example, one study found that overweight adults with type 2 diabetes who consumed just one-quarter cup of walnuts daily reduced their fasting insulin levels in just a few months' time compared to those on non-walnut diets.

THE MARKET PLACE 51
Nerja
was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

La Herradura
nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
