ON SHELVES Editions Didier Millet Bali announces a new title: “My Journey from Paris to Java” by renowned French novelist and playwright Honore´ de Balzac. Honoré de Balzac (1799–1850), one of the pioneers of literary realism, makes a short fantasy diversion to the mystical island of Java, where he, or rather the narrator, encounters a deadly poisonbreathing tree, civilized monkeys, love-sick sparrows, and the epitome of Oriental desirability of his day – the women of Java. This charmingly small work was nevertheless much loved by Balzac himself, and it provides a captivating glimpse of the breadth of his imagination. This is the first English edition of the French original Voyage de Paris à Java, featuring color photographs and illustrations of Java and a comprehensive Gazeteer that provides architectural and historical information. She started her carrier as theater artist but then 5 years ago she became interested in belly dancing and decided to take it up seriously. Her win at the festival was her second win that week. Prior, she had placed runner-up at the Seoul Belly Dance event. The Asian Belly Dance Festival had 18 participants from 10 countries.
KERAMAS KINGS Nusa Lembongan’s Ediana Putra claimed victory at the first event of the three-part Rusty Gromfest series held at Keramas Beach in late February. Ediana was challenged by Jeren Kiring, Nyoman Satria ‘Blacky’, and Mansur Ramlin in the 20-minute final, but managed to edge his way into the lead and hold it for the win. In the Under 14 division, emerging talents surfaced with Agus Saputra, Komang Bereng, and Komang ‘Komo’ Sastrawan as standouts. The eventual winner was Agus Saputra, but ‘Komo’ impressed Head Judge Tipi Jabrik enough to score a new surfboard courtesy of Coca-Cola Indonesia. The overall Under 16 series champion will be awarded an all-expenses-paid trip to Australia to compete in the 15th annual Rusty Gromfest at Lennox Head in July this year. The second stop of the series was at Pererenan, Canggu on March 28. (Photos courtesy: Freedom Photoworks) www.isctour.com
DYE MAGICALLY Magic Ink magazine launched recently as the first tattoo media in Indonesia. The theme was ‘In Pain We Trust’, and introduced the new periodical to the public aimed at gathering tattoo artists, tattoo art enthusiasts and the general audience. Various music talents, DJs, and a sexy fashion show from the C&C Models colored the event in late February at the Double D Sport Bar & Club in Legian. The event also featured a tattoo show contest within the “Balinese Category” that aimed to showcase expressions from the tattoo artist community. Further info: (0361) 263-569

TENDER LOVING CARE IN TUBAN March 5 a fortunate band of members and guests resisted the lure of trade shows and sales missions to Berlin and other exotic source markets to enjoy a super culinary experience in the lovely atmosphere of the ballroom at Holiday Inn Resort Baruna in Tuban. A spicy Balinese salad - a creative mix of seaweeds from Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida with a kick of chilli turmeric and coconut was followed by a copious serving of Pak Wayan’s awesome sop Buntut, Javanese oxtail soup – the perfect blend of traditional spices and raw ingredients simmered for hours with TLC. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. HEALTH & MEDICAL Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue
