Welcome to Bali and welcome to 2011’s April edition of Bali & Beyond.

In this edition, flip to our new Folio pages (that debuted in our January 2011 edition, with a selection of photographic snapshots depicting the beauty of Bali). As a general rule, we feature photographic galleries in odd months, and fashion galleries in the even months.

So this month our Fashion Folio features a collection of fashion designs from the portfolio of Espen Salberg, set in the elegant spaces of the new Pure Villa Bali in Canggu. Espen Salberg, a former world professional Latin American dance champion, is a Norwegian who spent 17 years in Italy before moving to Bali. He branches out into fashion geared for the dance crowd. His claim to fame is that he designed dresses for Jennifer Lopez in the movie Shall We Dance.

On this day the children usually search for the colorful eggs that have previously been hidden by the adults. And always present are the rabbit ears and rabbit costumes. Here we have compiled some of the highlights at various hotels and venues that help add color to the family Easter celebrations this month.

Through Beyond Bali we feature the Baluran National Park in East Java. This park with all its natural beauty and bird habitats easily brings one’s admiration into the world of birdwatching. The world of ornithology is steadily growing at this national park.

Bali & Beyond gathered its impromptu team and headed to the all-new Pure Villa Bali for some angles and glamour shots to share with you Salberg’s latest creations through this month’s Fashion Folio. We humbly thank Salberg for the collection, Cyrielle Mohara for modeling for us, Jana for the excellent makeup, and Aji Mahareshi for the superb fashion photography.

Baluran successfully hosted the first national level bird watching competition in June 2010. This competition with prize money of more than Rp. 21 million was joined by hundreds of birdwatchers of various age groups, thus becoming a lively means of exchanging experiences and records of bird encounters.

Supersemar was part of Indonesian history when Soekarno, the Indonesian president, gave a so-called command letter to Soeharto on March 11, 1966. This historical moment 45 years ago become a reflection for Yaksa Agus. It gave him an idea for his solo exhibition. Now, many people are wondering if the letter really existed.

Did Soekarno actually give the command or was it just a manipulation by Soeharto to reach his goal to be Indonesian president? Yaksa is one person who also raises the big question. He uses stamps as icons in his paintings. For him stamps are a communication tool among regions and even countries. It captures any important moment in one country. HYPOMANICAM Tonyraka Art Gallery will host “HypomaniCam,” an art exhibition by the Lingkar Community Bali from April 17 through May 18. “HypomaniCam” presents a series of artwork based on photography. Under the banner of the Lingkar Community, seven young professional photographers (Indra Widi, Komang ‘Totok’ Parwata, Yan Palapa, DP Arsa, Aries Santhana, Patrick Lumbanraja, and Al Ma) work to redefine the conventions of photography and transcend the boundaries of the art of photography as well as the domain of the profession of photographer. They explore various ideas, techniques, and materials to expand and enrich the aesthetic vocabulary of photography as a medium of expression in the field of contemporary art.

HEAD IN THE CLOUDS Ganesha Gallery presents an exhibition showcasing the works of Carola Vooges. “Head in the Clouds” runs through May 2 with the opening on April 7. According to the artist, the human race is unique in that our heads literally scrape the clouds. We are not only survivors but also dreamers who stare at the stars and contemplate the meaning of it all. The Dutch sculptor and long time Bali resident has always been contemplative and dreamy. In contrast to her mammoth 2009 retrospective at the Griya Santrian Gallery, “Head in the Clouds” is a minimal presentation of only 5 new works with surprises. In them Vooges turns her eyes upwards to acknowledge the Sky, Planets, Moons, Stars, Celestial Phenomenon and Comets while noting parallels with her first love, the Sea. This is seen in “Galaxy” and “Milky Way”, which could belong to either world. One of the most powerful works is “Obelisk,” an architectural stele that rises up into the stratosphere.

This cluster of Babel-like towers speaks of inter-galactic travel and exotic structures built by alien cultures on unknown planets.

ADMIRATION OF FOLKTALES

LINES OF REMEMBRANCE Kendra Gallery hosts “The Lines That Remind Me Of You”, an exhibition of art by Agung Kurniawan featuring paintings, video and installation art. During the 1990’s, Agung Kurniawan was an artist who reflected social and political issues in his works. Most of his works criticized the social condition in the New Order Era (Orde Baru), which governed the country with an authoritarian system. After the reformation in 1998, along with the birth of democracy in Indonesia, many artists started to work on themes and concepts related to political issues. Agung found that this situation made political issues boring and not interesting anymore. In 2000, Agung’s “Cinderamata dari Dunia Ketiga” work (Souvenirs from the Third World) depicted a self-criticism to artists who have used the political theme as a commodification in their work. In his boredom with art, Agung started functioning in alternative art organizations such as IVAA (Indonesian Visual Art Archive), FKY (Jogjakarta Art Festival), and Kedai Kebun Forum (a gallery in a restaurant to accommodate young artists). For Agung, by developing alternative spaces and foundations art is more grounded and can be enjoyed by a wider audience. “The Lines That Remind Me Of You” is an idea of how Agung visits his past through art.

Gaya Art Space presents Alex Valenzuela in his solo exhibition, Putri Naga Komodo Paintings and Drawings, through April 11. Alex Valenzuela was born in 1979 in Manhattan, New York. He studied illustration and graphic design at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. This collection is inspired by the people of the Komodo National Park in Eastern Indonesia and their oral traditions, which are represented in the book The Dragon Princess of Komodo & Other Folktales. Alex visited Komodo and immersed himself in the culture to ensure that he really caught the spirit of these people in an authentic way. Proceeds from sales of the book, a lavishly illustrated collection of six traditional tales, go to support grassroots community projects in the park.

DIALOG OF MULTILAYERS Leticia Balacek is an artist with a background in architecture and design, and will be presenting her unique works of mixed media photographic collages, video and art installations at the Sika Gallery in Ubud this month. First she proposes, “How can you define yourself? How can you define a place, a culture? Where is the essence of each thing? How can you feel it? How can you describe it? Is it a picture or two? Is it a color? A smell? A particular situation? A ritual? Textures. A texture that is created by a personal perception; by a combination, a repetition, an overlapping of multiple images. Or maybe only one.” Two works from her “Textures” collection will be presented: “Life is Paradise (Bangkok)” and “Transformations (El Tigre, Buenos Aires)” Mix media (collages and big photographs), short film and installation by Leticia Balacek on April 23 to May 6 at the Sika Contemporary Gallery in Ubud. Through her work, viewers will be able to dive deeper and engage in a unique dialog that reveals the further meanings behind the works.

PLAN N’ PLANTS Pacto’s Director of Business Development, Umberto Cadamuro announced its “1,000 trees for Bali” project, part of Pacto’s Corporate Social Responsibility program. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics.

Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods.

Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas.

Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately.

Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe.

Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun.

Use high SPF sunblock and a hat.

AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world.
