teamtalk The Happy Faces When we went on a trip to see the Komodo Dragons in Komodo Island, we were taken by our guide to visit the fishing village of Kampung Komodo for a short tour and to visit an elementary school on the island. The native children in the village greeted us on the pier and proudly showed us their ability to jump into the sea. It reminded us of the children at Bali’s harbors, who risk their lives jumping from the big ferry into the dangerous sea for Rp. 10,000. But at Kampung Komodo, none of us gave money to the children, as surprisingly none of the children asked for money. We had such good fun playing with the children, taking a lot of pictures of them and showing them the pictures. The quiet school soon became very lively with shouts, screams, cheers, and laughs from them. There was such a happy feeling, but I then realized that I actually didn’t bring anything to make them even happier. Then I asked them, if I come back here again, what would they like me to bring? One of the bigger children answered me with an answer I never thought of before. He said, “Bring me some books, Kakak (Sister), I’d like to read books but it’s hard to find them here.” Tears dropped from my eyes, because it was books he wanted, not a toy or money. Even when we were about to leave our guide gave them her only pen, and those children were fighting to get that pen. Unfortunately that was the only pen we had. Since then I promised that if I come back there again one day, I will bring them books, pens, notebooks, and print them the pictures I took that day. The message we want to deliver is that we as humans live as part of this world. We don’t live alone, and around us there are many people, creatures and even the environment that need to be well taken care of. We will never know anything unless we start to care about what our surroundings actually need, and to stop being selfish and see life from another perspective. Commencing on Earth Day that falls on April 22, we bring Tri Hita Karana as this month’s theme, to remind us to take care of our surroundings and that humans will not be able to survive in this Earth without getting support from each other, other creatures, and even Mother Earth itself. And hopefully by reading our magazine this month, you will be inspired to start small act for a bigger result. Enjoy reading, and don’t forget to bring some inspiring and educational books for the children of Kampung Komodo if you plan to visit them. ‘Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om…’ The Team

AWAITING THE NEW LOOK The Legian Bali announces that the renovations started on the third week of February are scheduled to be finished on May 30. The renovation project cover two blocks of suites and focuses on new bathroom fixtures, complete new lighting, and complete overhaul of the A/C units, leaving only 35 suites operating during the renovation while the rest will be renovated in January of 2013. There will also be a landscaping in the front and the back gardens as well as they will be replacing overgrown, old and too shady trees with mature trees. Another renovation plan is to convert the current fish ponds behind both the Ocean and Pool bars into beautiful water gardens, with the far right and left corners transitioned for wading pools for small children, separated by a low wall to allow them to play in the shallow pools. THREE CONCEPT Tri Hita Karana: A trinity that cannot be separated one from one another. This ‘three concept’ is divine wisdom that regards the life of every being on Earth.

piritualist Anand Krisna found an interesting fact in the use of the number “Three”; that most religions in this world use the number three as an important factor in their beliefs. Christians symbolize the trinity as God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The Sufi

believes in Murshid (spiritual mentor), Rasul (the prophet), and Allah (God). In modern times, we now recognize the most popular ‘trinity’ is Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. This ‘three concept’ is also scientific trinity) consisting in all physical matter. Among the Balinese, this ‘three concept’ is known as Tri Hita Karana. This concept is believed to have been applied since centuries ago. This universal concept ties together the relationship of a person with God (Parahyangan), their Surroundings (Palemahan) and humanity (Pawongan). The term Tri Hita Karana itself appeared in 1966, developed by Bali’s Hindu Society. Tri means three, Hita means prosperity, and Karana means the causes. In Sanskrit terminology, Tri Hita Karana is the three elements that manifest happiness, or three factors that create physical and spiritual prosperity. It is a universal strategy to preserve the balance, compatibility and the harmony of life on Mother Earth. The Tri Hita Karana concept consists of three major wisdoms: Parhyangan or the wisdom of the harmony of life between humans with God, Palemahan or the wisdom of the harmony of life between humans and their natural surroundings, and Pawongan or the wisdom of the harmony of life between humans with each other. It is believed that the harmony among these three aspects 24

Some of the students stay in the area for a month to assist them doing day-to-day activities and observe their needs, while we had a one day visit on March 5 and a kinship conversation with the people, listening to them tell about their daily activities and obstacles they have to go through. From there we can decide what we can do to help and also pass along this information to others. Our keynote speaker, Bayu Rahanatha, gave an overview of micro business skill and encouraged them with inspirational stories about successful people who started their business from zero, so they don’t give up hope when selling their products and don’t go back to begging. There were around 50 people that came all the way from their remote houses that couldn’t be reached by cars, gathering in the very humble village hall. We also collected some donations in the form of basic needs like rice, noodles, sugar, cooking oil and clothes. We would like to thank the donating participants for their kind hearted gifts: Level 7 Consulting, 101 Legian Hotel, Intercontinental Bali Resort, Banyan Tree, Juwita Aesthetic, and Wilmix. We hope that this program will give the community some inspirational ideas and open their eyes to the opportunity to become one of the successful parts of Bali’s tourism industry. Van Steyn, a Dutch colonial administrator, after he heard about a ‘land crocodile’, and the expedition to gather more information about Komodo Dragons was first started in 1926. The Government established Komodo National Park in 1980 to conserve the unique Komodo Dragon (Varanus Komodoensis) and protect its entire biodiversity, both marine and terrestrial. The site was declared a World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1986, located between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores at the border of the Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) and Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTP) provinces. The park includes three major islands, Komodo, Rinca and Padar, and numerous smaller islands together totalling 603 square kilometers of land. The total size of Komodo National Park is presently 1,817 square kilometers.

We continued on towards Komodo Island and passed the famous Pink Beach. Before we reached the island, our guide explained that we were on a tight schedule and couldn’t be going back too late because the sea would be too dangerous to pass. We then gathered our bags and got ready for a little adventure. The boat engine was shut off and soon the sound of the insects as well as the sounds of the Komodo Dragons could be heard breaking the silence of this island. Just as we walked down the pier, a Komodo Dragon passed by in front of the welcoming gate of Komodo Island. It wasn’t that big but it drew our attention, and soon the group was busy taking pictures. A Jagawana or ranger as the guide is called, came along to keep us safe and escorted us to the reception office. It’s 58

Another thing that you must be aware of is that if you’re in your menstruation period you must tell the ranger before you go trekking. The Komodo is very sensitive to blood; they can smell it from far away and track where it comes from. They also are able to detect carrion from 4–9.5 kilometres (2.5–5.9 miles) away. There are four types of trails available for trekking, a Short Trek, Medium Trek, Long Trek and the Adventure Trek. The Short Trek is the easiest trail without much climbing and walking on steep slopes. It only takes one hour and it ends at Fregata Hill, where you can see a beautiful view of the Komodo Island’s bay from the hill. At the moment there are about 1,200 Komodo Dragons that live on Komodo Island, sharing the area with other inhabitants including Asian mammals (deer, pigs, macaques, civets), Australian origin reptiles and birds, twelve terrestrial snakes including the poisonous cobra (Naja naja sputatrix), Russels pit viper (Vipera russeli), and green tree vipers (Trimeresurus Albolabris). We passed the recreation area where they have an official souvenir shop, restaurant and accommodation. The buildings are in poor condition but fortunately there are more new buildings about ready to operate. It’s a shame that the Government seems like they are just busy promoting without really caring about the facility for tourists of this famous tourism icon of Indonesia. The Short Trek took us to the end and we headed back to the Reception Office. Our boat’s engine had been turned on and it’s time for us to leave this island. But our journey hadn’t ended yet, we had more destinations to reach and I am sure that, sooner or later, I will get back here again. THREE IN ONE Three of Malaysia’s most celebrated and highly respected contemporary artists, Bayu Utomo Radjikin, Chong Siew Ying and Jalaini Abu Hassan are readying their exhibition at the Kendra Gallery this April, presenting their personal narratives to a multi cultured audience in Bali. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
