teamtalk HERE COMES THE NEW YEAR ‘Om Swastiastu...’ Believe it or not, New Year’s is just around the corner. Have you decided how you’re going to spend the last month of 2012? Here at Bali & Beyond we want to remind you that even though Bali does not offer the snow and sleigh bells you might associate with this time of year, the sunshine and vibrant colors keep it festive year round! This issue’s FashionFolio, shot under blue skies by Fabio Lorenzo, features some great fashion to get you inspired so you can step out in style at your end-of-year events. Perhaps you have special plans lined up already for Christmas? If not, we recommend Rosso Vivo for its red décor (how appropriate!) and mouth-watering Christmas dinner menu. If you’re looking to be out and about on New Year’s Eve, make sure you take a look at Feast & Festivities for special events happening around the island. We’re sure you’ll find something that suites your style. After the parties are over and done, why not kick off 2013 with an adventure on the open road? Our contributor Daniel Leemon shares his experience exploring the outskirts of Yogyakarta by motorbike and the surprising landscape he came across. Or keeping things closer to home, why not do a little redecorating? In Lifestyle & Leisure we’ll show you how to incorporate the popular ‘shabby chic’ look into your living space. In this issue we also share some more of our favorite places to dine, rest, and relax, as well as give you a glimpse of the many festivals happening annually on the island to promote things such as tourism and peace. Will you make it out to one next year? We’re excited for the opportunities of the upcoming year and hope you are too! Thanks for all your support this year and we hope you enjoy ringing in the New Year with the ones you love. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Bali & Beyond! ‘Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om…’ The Team

performances are one of the ways to preserve Balinese culture as well as introduce it to the world. As for cultural festivals, there have been many in Bali throughout the years, and the local government together with Balinese artists and organizations have made it possible to bring these festivals to life annually. Everyone is welcome to witness the beauty and uniqueness of Balinese art and culture, which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Some events are held on specific occasions, for example during full moon or other days that are considered important. A TOUCH OF SHABBY CHIC The historical value of antique furniture or accessories will be able to give soul to a room with a modern minimalist interior design. Here are some do-it-yourself ideas to bring shabby chic to your modern minimalist home: 1. Purchase a vintage tea set from China; the beauty of the original china cups will be the center of attention for your modern dining table. It’s okay to combine different cup patterns because literal cohesiveness is not the way to achieve shabby chic. 2. Pair a vintage coffee table with a sheep leather beanbag in your living room. 3. The Villas Ubud Green is a collection of 16 contemporary styled villas harmonized with the surrounding natural environment and the traditional culture of Bali. Each villa is a private sanctuary named with a Balinese nature element, and complimented with butler service. Ten spacious Ubud Green Villas offer rice paddy views, a plunge pool and sundeck, a spacious living and dining room, kitchenette, in-room wine cellar and modern appliances. Ubud Green offers all the comforts of home and more in a lush tropical environment. Even though this villa is perfect for honeymooners, surprisingly there’s only two villa units with one bedroom (Garden Villa – Surya Villa), while the others have a spacious 2-floor duplex suite (Akasa), or two bedrooms (Apah, Bayu, Bumi Villa) that are probably more

Personalized Hospitality Ubud Green offers a unique brand of personalized hospitality that begins as soon as an online reservation is made. Their E-Concierge will communicate directly with guests to fully prepare them for their arrival. This may involve stocking the villa with a preferred wine or ordering fresh flowers to surprise a loved one. Along with exceptional in-house service, Ubud Green also provides guests with a mobile phone for outside excursions and shopping trips. A quick call will ensure a time effective pick-up at a designated location by an Ubud Green driver.

Dine In You can have your dinner delivered to your villa, but make sure not to miss the view from the Firefly Café. Firefly Café, with its cone shaped rooftop and open-air terrace, is a stylish dining venue positioned at the highest point of the Ubud Green Resort Villas. This restaurant offers sweeping views over the entire property and takes in the natural splendor of the adjacent rice fields. If the weather permits, Mount Agung can be seen in the distance in all its beauty.

Spa Nehan Spa has drawn on Bali’s time honored wellness rituals to create a detailed menu of holistic body treatments. Their spa treatments replenish depleted energy levels, counteract the effects of modern living, and address certain health concerns. There’s only one treatment room in Nehan Spa, but you can call the therapist to your villa too. What’s exciting is that when you stay at Ubud Green, you’ll automatically get a 15-minute free welcome massage. There’s something hypnotic about watching the locals at work in Bali – that slow languid movement, the mellow stare into nowhere, the lack of urgency, the ability to stay unruffled. This has always been part of the charm, life in the slower lane.

t’s at the very core of what we all fell in love with in the

After a while, if that place has that ‘magic’, and Bali certainly has, the tide of tourism becomes irreversible as more hotels are erected, some of the tourists morph into rich residents, and the standard of, well, everything goes up. Five-star accommodation, fine dining, boutiques, cocktail bars, all the luxuries you could wish for and all the fineries that money can buy. And it all sits alongside the same old locals who still have the same old ways. Will there be a clash? Inevitably, more money raises expectations. When someone spends big dollars on a meal, they don’t want to be kept waiting for the food. When people order expensive cocktails they want them served perfectly. When they’re in luxurious surroundings they expect immaculate service and exceptional customer care. How will all this affect the happy-go-lucky Balinese and their sunny disposition? Their laid back approach to life, which is something to be treasured, could be under threat with the prevalent critique of the wealthy holiday-maker. I’ve seen a lot of tourists ‘tutting’ at bars and restaurants recently, people indignantly huffing and raising their eyebrows, ‘politely’ indicating that they’ve been waiting for far too long. We’ve all been there – staff gliding past you seemingly oblivious to your need for another beer, or leaning on the far end of the bar while you frantically wave your arms about trying to get their attention. It can be annoying, but it’s not life threatening, and it’s only actually mildly irritating until we decide to make an issue of it. Waiting a few extra moments won’t kill you, won’t lead to starvation, and it won’t sober you up. And let’s face it, once they’re dealing with you, they’re effusively polite and super friendly. And why should we accept it? The answer is simple – everything is everything. It’s all related and it’s all part of the same entity. It’s just the other side of the same coin. The same characteristic that shaped this island, welcomed us in and charmed us. And here’s the point. If they weren’t like this, Bali wouldn’t be Bali. The more we tut and complain, the more likely we are to ruin what is quintessentially the Balinese spirit, and a huge part of their culture. Then this island would end up as just another resort. And none of us want that. Text by Daniel Leemon

The Festival Sinema Prancis 2012, or the French Film Festival 2012, will be held from 11 - 12 December at Cineplex 21 in Beachwalk Bali, following its premiere in Jakarta from 8 - 10 December. In January of 2013 the festival will continue on to the cities of Balikpapan, Bandung, Lampung, Makassar, Malang, Medan, Semarang, Solo, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta. When the festival started in 1996 it was the first foreign film festival of its kind in Indonesia. The festival continues to undergo dynamic transformation, adapting to developments in both the French and Indonesian film industries. This year the festival’s vision is to establish an ongoing program. It kicked off the year with various programs in Indonesia and now culminates with the film festival to bring a colorful cinematic experience to the country. The Festival Sinema Prancis is joining forces with the “Rendez-Vous with French Cinema” in Singapore and Cineplex 21 to offer a selection of films that have never been shown in Indonesia before, covering all different genres such as action, thriller, romantic comedy, and drama. The festival will be graced by appearances from several French actors and directors including Oliver Assayas, a very important figure in the French Film world who will come specifically to Jakarta to give a master class at Cineplex 21 Plaza Indonesia on December 8, 2012. Also taking place for the first time at the Festival Sinema Prancis is a short film competition to find emerging Indonesian directors and give them a chance to present their work to a larger audience. The best director will receive a trip to France to participate in a short film festival; a wonderful chance to broaden their experiences and provide networking opportunities. www.institutfrancais-indonesia.com

The Bali Rainbow Community has just held a Gala Charity Event at The Royal Beach Resort Seminyak on December 1st. The event, which coincided with World AIDS Day 2012, was themed Listen (to the information) Learn (about your status) Live (healthy). As the virus continues to rampage through the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community and the general community in Bali, immediate and urgent assistance is needed to educate people on the importance of safe sex, getting tested, knowing your HIV status, and if positive, learning how to live a long and healthy life. This event helps raise funds to support HIV/ AIDS patients with much needed support and education. Tickets were Rp. 175.000 per person and included a standup cocktail reception, beer, wine, and soft drinks. Aside from door prizes, raffles, and auctions, guests enjoyed the “DIVA LA VIDA” show featuring Bali’s leading drag performers from Bali’s best gay bars. All profits from the evening were donated to the cause. At the same charity event in 2010, the association was able to raise over 126 million Rupiah for Yayasan Gaya Dewata.

HEALTH&MEDICAL Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctorprescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
