TEAMTALK

HARE. A FOUR-LETTER WORD. ‘Om Swastiastu...’ Welcome to Bali and welcome to 2011’s February edition of Bali & Beyond, and we would like to wish every leapling a solemn ‘happy birthday’ on either February 28 or March 1 this year, and be patient until their next year’s actual merriment. But this month is not without jollification. First up is Chinese New Year that comes around early this year on February 3, turning the calendar to the zodiac year of the Metal Rabbit. The Rabbit, in Chinese characters also translated as ‘Hare’, is the fourth animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. This year takes on the Metal elemental sign in the astrological series. “Gong Xi Fa Cai!” all around. That four-letter word. Hare. Yes, and love, and all that goes along with it, is celebrated next on Valentine’s Day, February 14. The red lanterns, red ang pao packets, and prayer incense subside into red roses, chocolate and pink greeting cards. We’ve compiled a few selections from the establishments around the island that highlight the two celebrations; flip to this month’s Invite & Indulge to sample the few, as there are many more on offer all around. Our new Folio pages (that debuted last month with a selection of photographic snapshots depicting the beauty of Bali) this month features a collection of designs from the Fashion Tendance 2011, presented in a runway spectacle before the turn of the year at the Laguna Resort & Spa in Nusa Dua. FashionFolio displays designs from members of the Association of Indonesian Fashion Designers & Entrepreneurs, APPMI Bali. 6

BALI&BEYOND FEBRUARY 2011

Craft & Culture this month features a story of the island’s silver and gold scene. The Balinese began processing gold and silver in the 7th century between the Hindu-Buddha classic eras. The 20th century saw the silver industry bloom and Balinese silver is now known the world over.

Donny Cahyadi is a member of the Bangli royal family and enjoys recording aspects of his Balinese culture, heritage and the simple outdoors.

Through Beyond Bali we go back in time on a historical journey with the legendary Chinese admiral Zheng He (1371–1433). A temple dedicated to the great figure can be found today along Jalan Simongan in the southwest of the city of Semarang in Central Java. This figure was a Hui-Chinese mariner, explorer, diplomat and fleet admiral who commanded voyages to Southeast Asia, South Asia, and East Africa, collectively referred to as the travels of “Eunuch Sanbao to the Western Ocean” or “Zheng He to the Western Ocean” from 1405 to 1433. In many ways, Zheng He can also be considered a major founder of the present community of Chinese Indonesians. Meanwhile, in Capital Corner our team of contributors shares with you Jakarta perspectives of Chinese New Year. Locally known as Imlek, it is a time to show respect to those who have passed away and to reunite with family members over elaborate feasts. Back on this island, our Action & Attractions features the capital city. Denpasar might not be a popular destination among most tourists on the island compared to Kuta, Ubud, Lovina, or even Candi Dasa, but the capital does have some interesting sights to be seen.

Erik Wijaya is our Malang, East Java-based writer and photographer. His portfolio can be viewed at www.erikstudio.com

Patricia Ivana loves writing, which also finances her travels. She loves the beach and wishes to go to all the beautiful beaches in the world. (Good luck Pat!)

Enjoy this edition; enjoy your time and travels on the island and beyond – and we wish you a month full of love, cheers and ‘red packets’! ‘Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om…’ The Team

Josua Alessandro loves to photograph human subjects, cultures and landscapes. His portfolio can be viewed at www.escapadepictures.com

here are many reasons for owning a piece of jewelry. It may show your position, status, pride and prestige, but above all its basic purpose is to adorn and beautify the wearer. For thousands of years, people have created and produced jewelry from many materials. Excavations in Africa revealed that ancient Africans used shells as adornments.

become the most common. Metal processing techniques were developed long ago. People of the Indonesian archipelago knew about metallurgic techniques from the Dongson culture that was brought in from Vietnam through Cambodia and down the Malacca strait (current day Thailand and Malaysia). The most processed was copper and bronze. The main purposes were to create weapons, ceremonial tools, and jewelry. This culture spread out all over the archipelago in the course of island trading. Among all the kinds of metals, there are two that have become the main and most popular materials for jewelry, namely gold and silver. The Balinese started to use it in the 7th century between the Hindu-Buddha classic eras. In the 20th century, the silver industry saw a rapid development that was fully supported by the advent of tourism. It helped to introduce and promote Balinese silver to the entire world. Bali’s silver craft development is inseparable from the village of Celuk,

increasingly uncomfortable from day to day due to the many passengers that board them. Now even more traffic jams occur. In order to circumvent the congestion that has become commonplace around Kuta’s Dewa Ruci statue roundabout, mainly heading in direction of Nusa Dua, the local government has come up with the initiative for a flyover to be built there. It was officially brought up a couple of years ago, but with inspiration coming long before that. A flyover would be the last resort when no other land option for opening up new routes were deemed possible, to connect to the northern direction that includes Ubud, Denpasar, Sanur and Nusa Dua. Yet the largest challenge in building such a flyover in Bali is the Balinese people themselves. How could it be possible that such a road be built spanning over and above, while a temple sits underneath it? Should the Balinese carry their pretima sacred temple heirlooms in pilgrimages under these structures? Most would regard it as blasphemous or somewhat ironic, as these sacred objects are meant to be carried on top of the head, so passing underneath anything would be out of the question. This had become a polemic issue long before the PHDI (the nation’s official institution of Hindu religious affairs) finally approved the plan. The reason was that such a flyover was the final answer to the dire traffic situation as well as the conversion of productive land. All could be overcome through correct assessments and not impede the activities of custom and religion. The acceptance of the proposal by the PHDI became an anticlimax of the congested traffic issue that has long haunted everyone. The local government in coordination with the central government will make the project a reality. They estimate that the project will cost up Rp. 300 billion and would be completed by 2013. The target completion date was said to be made in time for the OPEC summit that is slated to take place then. In the meantime, we can all take a deep breath and wait, as the issue of congestion will linger on as long as the population density grows and vehicle ownership grows out of hand. One effective way that can be considered is public transportation – one point of which Bali is totally deficient in. Regulations on vehicle ownership and taxes may also contribute to the infrastructure of public transportation. But that all also depends on good and clean governance. Well, on the other hand and on the bright side, before 2013 becomes a reality tourists are still able to approach the Dewa Ruci statue at a very, very slow pace, and ask their guide what the landmark is all about – a talking point there. ■ Text by Ni Luh Dian Purniawati Photo by Vincent Herry BALI&BEYOND FEBRUARY 2011

For a more nostalgic nuance opt for the Inna Bali Hotel on Jalan Veteran, which happens to be the oldest hotel having been built in 1932. Chinese New Year comes around early this year on February 3, turning the calendar to the zodiac year of the Metal Rabbit. The Rabbit, in Chinese characters also translated as ‘Hare’, is the fourth animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. This year takes on the Metal elemental sign in the astrological series. Here, let’s see some aspects of the celebrations in Jakarta.

BALI&BEYOND FEBRUARY 2011

THE YEAR OF JOY AND PROSPERITY Locally known as Imlek, the Lunar New Year is a time to show respect to those who have passed away and to reunite with family members over an elaborate feast. In the Chinese community, departed relatives are remembered with great respect because they laid the foundation for the family’s fortune. To pay respect to them, on Imlek families go to the temple and pray for the souls of their relatives. There are several old Buddhist temples in Jakarta but the most popular one happens to be the oldest temple, which interestingly has also drawn followers of Confucianism and Taoism. The temple was built in 1650 by Kwee Hoen in honor of Kuan Yin, the Goddess

FRAGMENTS OF SUBCONSIOUS MEMORY

BETWEEN SPACES Ganesha Gallery presents a dual exhibition featuring the comparative works of two artists, Oktara Quevarra Bakara of Sumatra and I Made Suparta Wijaya of Bali. Although born on opposite ends of the archipelago, both artists share common threads. They are around the same age and have attended ISI, Indonesia’s premiere art academy in Central Java. Being of the same generation their mutual preoccupation with similar themes is also perhaps not that surprising. Wijaya sums up his philosophy with the Balinese saying that everything we do has consequences –sweet and bitter, good and bad. Needless to say his iconography is enigmatic and symbolic. Bakara also speaks of awakening consciousness and the impact of everyday life on his art. Ganesha Gallery, Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay, (0361) 701-010

Tonyraka Art Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Teja Astawa, a young artist from Sanur whose artwork expresses visual uniqueness. His artwork represents a development of the wayang art language, the ideas of which are dug out of his subconscious childhood memories when he played with frangipani leaves that were shaped into wayang figures. The experience, established in his memory, reappears through spontaneous mechanism and becomes visible in images of his paintings as he grew up. Based on the experience, Teja is presenting his artworks in this exhibition, in which he includes strange, peculiar but at the same time unique, objects. Actually it is this uniqueness that makes his artwork fascinating. www.tonyrakaartgallery.com

The group is comprised of Agung Darmayuda, Alit Suaja, Anthok.S, Bangbang Ariana, Gusti Buda, Lekung Sugantika, Made Sudiarta, Pande Paramartha, Sani and Susana. In this exhibition each member does not present their individual artwork instead they fuse and create a figure named Hitcman, a superhero who visualizes his vision and mission in art with compounding each Hitam Putih Group member’s character. He is athletic, winged, armed and holds a globe. Hitcman will be painted on a single 8-meter canvas by the group’s members. The exhibition is open from February 5-19 and gallery is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm. Danes Art Veranda, Jl. Hayam Wuruk No. 159 Denpasar, (0361) 242-659

After holding a huge sculpture exhibition at ARMA last year and an exhibition at Adi’s Gallery, he decided to take a break and spend more time on other interesting projects. Now Adi has chosen 28 paintings and two drawings out of his private collection - art from 24 painters altogether, and brought these very different canvases together with a selection of his own work. This exciting group exhibition presents Made Ariana, Oktara Bakara, Adi Bachmann, Suliat Buamar, Nyoman Budiarta, Arga Dereja, Iwan Han, Hutomo Ishii, Jepun, Yadi Juliansyah, Iwan Koeswanna, Lucky, Pandi, Made Mudra, Eva Schumy, Nyoman Suarnata, Necky Sodikin, Ari Sudarma, Em Sumba, Gede Sudarma, Agustian Supriatna, Symon, Tini Wahyuni, and Made Suparta Wijaya. FUN, FRESH N’ WET Aston at Grand Kuta Hotel and Residence celebrated the turn of the year with dinner at the Magnolia café attended by in-house guests and accompanied by the melodious tunes of a solo acoustic guitarist. The ‘Fun, Fresh & Wet’ countdown party included several door prizes for the celebrants. The crowd moved to the main pool for the countdown accompanied by chill out music by a DJ, stage entertainment by a percussion group, fire dancers and a sexy dance troupe. Rain began to fall not long after the party started, but this did not dampen the spirit of the party a bit. The party continued wonderfully wet, which suited the party’s theme. Near midnight the actual countdown was led by the host and was marked by a fireworks display. The party continued after the turn of the year with more DJ performances and guests enjoying the wet party in the pool along with a free flow of canapés and cocktails. HEALTH&MEDICAL Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
