GOT SPIRIT? ‘Om Swastiastu...’ Nyepi, Bali’s annual day of silence, is just around the corner. Since this celebration holds so much spiritual weight (even the airport shuts down in observance!), we were inspired to discuss ‘Joy & Spirit’ this month. It seemed appropriate after our January ‘Rejuvenation’ edition and our February ‘Love’ edition to ruminate about all the things that make us feel happy and alive. To learn about the significance of Nyepi for Balinese Hindus, turn to our Craft & Culture section for a brief introduction. As for those who are more than familiar with this celebration, we invite you to think about some other things on this island that give your life meaning. Some people embark on spiritual pilgrimages in order to strengthen their faith and better understand the meaning of life. Others feel their best and one with the universe after an energizing yoga session. And yet others simply need to have some good food and be surrounded by their nearest and dearest to feel truly happy. What makes you feel joy? We hope that by thinking about this, it encourages you to be present, and to live life to its very fullest. Need a little inspiration? Turn to our FotoFolio for some photographs captured around the island of people who are doing just that. Happy March! ‘Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om…’ The Team

you to lose face, confrontation is to be avoided, and shouting gets you nowhere. I was given some advice by a friend on my arrival in Bali, which was the best and most practical bit of advice I could have been given: if you want something, or if you want a better price, do it with humor. In Western culture we tend to barter aggressively. We become indignant and angry at what we perceive to be a bad deal, whereby we expect a type of shame or logical thinking to win the day. We are taught to barter with force. In Bali this will get you nowhere. How many times have you seen a Westerner shouting the odds whilst the Balinese merchant looks away, wanting to disengage him or herself from the situation as a whole? This is because they are embarrassed and would rather the situation just go away. At that point they aren’t bothered about making the sale and they’re certainly not up for giving you a discount – if anything they’d like to charge you more. Giving it the old threat of “I’ll go elsewhere,” which often leads to results in Europe, doesn’t spur anyone into action here. It just makes them shrug and hope that you will. But try some humor and see their demeanor change in an instant. Laugh and tell them you are ‘a poor bule’ as you turn your pockets inside out, or smile at the taxi driver that over quotes you and tell him that for that price you expect a limousine with a blonde model in the back. Watch as they then laugh and become a lot more accommodating. Having to barter and work your way around a price system is not exclusive to Bali – it happens everywhere. However in Bali (and to an extent, Asia as a whole) humor is the most useful weapon to have. Would we not all choose to joke all day if it didn’t harm our path to success? Over here, this is possible, and it is how they do things. Once you understand this, your time here will be smoother and more enjoyable, and you may even make friends with the locals, thus enabling you to develop a deeper understanding of their culture. Here’s the real point: doing things with humor is best for all concerned. It’s more fun, less stressful, and helps to keep the harmony. If it gets results as well, then it’s a no-brainer! So while you’re in Bali show some respect, loosen up, and make a joke. By Daniel Leemon

HELPFUL HINTS FOR YOUR JOURNEY Whether you are embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage or just to looking to take a tour, here are some tips to help make the most of your experience:

• To visit the temples listed above, one day will definitely not be enough. It will take approximately three or four days to visit all of these temples. Consult with your travel agent to get the perfect routes.

If you are planning to go to the Lempuyang temple,

dedicate an entire day for the trip, considering the thousands of stairs you will have to climb.

Prepare yourself with traditional Balinese prayer

attire because it is forbidden to enter these holy places without it. Usually locals near the temples can provide you with attire to rent for your visit.

You will see a box on the temples with two words

written: Dana Punia. This is a charity box where you can place money. The money from the charity box is used for temple maintenance. There is no rule on the amount that you can give – it really depends on your willingness. If you don’t feel like donating, it is not a problem.

For those who just want to visit (versus undertaking

a spiritual pilgrimage), ask your tour guide to provide you with offerings, or you can simply go to the market to buy some prior to your trip.

THE FACE OF JAKARTA’S LIVE MUSIC SCENE IS ALWAYS EVOLVING, WITH A NEW WAVE OF VENUES HAVING OPENED RECENTLY. HERE’S A MINI GUIDE TO SOME OF THE CITY’S BEST MUSIC VENUES AND AFTER HOURS HAUNTS.

There aren’t too many places in Jakarta with a full-time focus on jazz and blues performances, but you can certainly get your fix at the Black Cat Jazz & Blues Club. Located at the Plaza Senayan Arcadia building next to the Plaza Senayan mall, this club entertains guests with live jazz and blues every day. The color purple and wooden furniture dominate the interior of this 300 square meter restaurant and club – a calm, classy, and romantic atmosphere. The crowd is a mix of expatriates and Indonesians and the food is New Orleans Cajun & Creole in semi-fine dining style.

If you’re feeling sassy you can take the stage during “Open Mic Monday” and sing a song or two with the band. It’s a fun way to make Mondays feel like they’re not so bad after all. HEALTH&MEDICAL Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
