Welcome to Bali and welcome to 2011’s May edition of Bali & Beyond.

In this edition, flip to our Foto Folio pages where a selection of photographic snapshots depicts the beauty of Bali. This time we invited Aji Mahareshi to share some of his striking artistic and cultural shots with you, as he helped provide us with the stunning fashion cover in last month’s edition.

This time we wanted to take a look at his portfolio of cultural and human subjects... and we were more than impressed. So flip to his portfolio this month to feast your eyes while you enjoy all the island has to offer.

In this month’s Craft & Culture we take a stroll around the island to pick up some hints along some historical paths.

As the most important holiday on the Buddhist calendar comes on May 17, marking the holy Vesak Day of 2555, we thought that it would be interesting to trace the path of Buddhism on the island through various sites and relics.

One among them is a site in Kalibukbuk, in north Bali. These mound-like structures contain Buddhist relics and are used by Buddhists as a place of worship. It is similar to the one found in the Pegulingan temple at Tampaksiring, dating back to 976 AD. For our Buddhist readers this month, we wish you a happy and blessed Vesak!

Through this month’s Invite & Indulge we present a collection of restaurants that present European tastes to the island. Why? Well, just for the sake of variety... Bon Appetit then...

In Pondering Point… fresh in our memories was the screening of Eat, Pray, Love. Some liked it. Some liked the book far better. Some flocked to 6

Then, still in the first semester Time magazine published an article about how bad Bali’s condition was as a tourist destination. Well, as they say there are two sides to everything. But the spotlighting of the island’s dire issues surely woke most of us up to reality, and let’s just say there is a positive side to it.

Out of the island and beyond in Beyond Bali, we take you to the Wakatobi Islands in Sulawesi that boasts the highest fish diversity in the world in one location. This amount is about 590 species, making it one of the best diving spots in the world.

Back on the island in Action & Attractions we take a look at the highlights of Kintamani. Up in the northern highlands of East Bali is the famous namesake area, a region renowned for its active volcano, a majestic caldera with a scenic lookout, Arabica coffee beans, exotic fruits, and original Bali Aga villages.

In Capital Corner, one of Jakarta’s many tourist attractions are the city’s specialized markets. There is the Tanah Abang textile center, the Pramuka medicine market, the Kramat Jati wholesale market, and the most recent one is the Jakarta Gems Centre (JGC) that was inaugurated this month, last year.

Accor with assistance from its guests has helped raised more than US$294,000 to provide health care and scholarships for children in an effort to end the cycle of poverty, to reforest land in Central Java and to assist local farmers to feed their families here in Indonesia. CANGGU CHARGED Marlon Gerber came back to the beach as the winner of the Oakley Pro 11 in Canggu on April 10 after an exciting 30-minute final in a high-scoring shootout to win the first stop on the 2011 Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour. In the exciting finale to six days of competition, Marlon Gerber put on an amazing display of surfing to take victory over veteran competitor and boyhood friend Pepen Hendrik.

During the final Gerber also posted the contest’s highest wave score of 9.5 (out of a possible 10 points), winning him the Coca-Cola ISC’s Highest Score Award of 1 million rupiah in addition to his 15 million rupiah first place prize money and 3,000 ISC Championship points. Bali is just a small island with limited capacity. On the other hand, hotel developments continue day after day. The increase in demands for rooms during the peak seasons is always the reason.

Quieter highlands of the island

But it becomes a big concern when the developments neglect the environment. Some hotels are even suspected of dumping their waste into the sea, along with many other unlawful practices.

The governor recently issued a hotel development moratorium in 3 regencies, namely Badung, Denpasar, and Gianyar (Nusa Dua to Kerobokan is within the Badung regency, Ubud is in Gianyar, and Denpasar is Bali’s capital city). Unfortunately this policy was not very popular and the regents unabashedly disregarded it.

Each of the regencies wanted to show their achievements, gaining profits but often neglecting the environment. Nature never complains at first, but it will react gradually. Sometimes it shows its wrath unexpectedly and can bring major impact on short notice.

The island’s government and tourism industry have to put on a brake on these developments. In this case, we have to thank the author of the Time article, Andrew Marshall. Reality bites. We need to develop a better way.

Nevertheless there is one thing, equally important, which Marshall did not describe in the article. It is a good thing that Bali still has other pristine places. He only addressed the southern part of Bali where the tourism industry is mostly centered.

The world tends to generalize... Just like naming the 2002 and 2005 blasts as “the Bali bombings” or even giving it a sequence such as “Bali Bomb I” and Bali Bomb II”, which was a totally terrible bad geography. Perhaps, the article’s headline should have read, “Southern Bali’s ongoing woes”. Nevertheless, a cautionary tale for the whole island indeed. All does become affected.

Bali still has many other clean beaches, beautiful scenic places without any man-made structures, and no traffic. Places where people respect and uphold their culture more than industry. ■ Text by Ni Luh Dian Purniawati

GIVING BACK Naka Contemporary Art together with BARC (Bali Adoption and Rescue Center), BAWA (Bali Animal Welfare Association), and the Yudhistira Swarga Veterinary Clinic, has organized a fundraising exhibition for Bali street dogs titled “Oh, For Dog’s Sake!” It aims to raise funds to help protect these poor canines from imminent danger due to sickness and injury.

For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics.

Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods.

Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas.

Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately.

Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe.

Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun.

Use high SPF sunblock and a hat.

AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world.

They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
