A LETTER FOR MR. PRESIDENT ‘Om Swastiastu...’ Talking about November, the usual thing that pops into our mind is that it’s a month before December, the most hectic time in the world. Millions of the world’s population is looking forward to welcoming December, especially those in the consumer industry. Only a few realize that November is also an important month. In Bali, November is one of those low season months when accommodation prices are lower than the three hectic months of June-August. I used to tell my friends to come to Bali in November for a quieter holiday, but this November in Bali is different. This November is very special, because two famous people from the superpower country of the USA will set foot on this beloved island along with various delegations and some 18 heads of state from around the world. Who are they? The most super famous, super important person in the world is the president of United States Mr. Barrack Obama, who will be attending the East Asia Summit at Nusa Dua in mid November. Obama is very special to Indonesia, as he spent some years of his life in Jakarta and Bali. He spent his childhood in Jakarta and spent a short time finishing his autobiographical book Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance in Ubud. All we want to say to Mr. Obama is, “Welcome again to Bali…” We have better roads now, a better economy, and better safety for an unforgettable holiday, and we still hope that you will come again for longer holiday, not a workoliday like you’re having now. And we hope that Nusa Dua can give you another idea of a Tropical Haven, just like what Eat, Pray and Love showed to everybody about the idyllic sanctuary of Ubud. We would also like to welcome Jason Mraz to Bali, where he will have a beach side concert at Taman Bhagawan in Nusa Dua. We hope you enjoy surfing 8

Indonesia has again organized a Jakarta Souvenir Design Award (JSDA) to seek young artists who are creating Jakarta’s best souvenirs. The Governor of DKI Jakarta, Fauzi Bowo, says that souvenirs can become must-have items among the tourists in Jakarta. With more than 100 participants – including students and professional designers – the winners were Aresdi Mahdi for creating a shirt with a picture of Jakarta, Tito Joseph for painting a plate in the student category, Aditya Abimanyu for designing a luggage tag in the public category, and Erik Wibowo for creating the stamp of Jakarta in the professional category. Lombok International Airport is officially in operation after it was opened by the president of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, on October 20. The new airport replaces the Selaparang Airport, and will now be Lombok’s main airport. The president hopes that the new airport will help to improve the economy of the people in West Nusa Tenggara as well as to support the development of international tourism within the area. He also said that the runway can be extended from 2,750 meters to 3,000 meters to serve bigger planes arriving and taking off of the airport. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases.
