TEAMTALK
teamtalk 07.09 COME ON... MAKE YOUR HOLIDAY ‘Om Swastyastu...’ Welcome to Bali and the July edition of Bali & Beyond, which takes us into the second half of 2009. We’ve continued to prepare features that we hope will accompany you during your adventures in Bali, and beyond.
will be useful as you indulge on the island or travel our vast archipelago. Here are a few... Through this month’s Craft & Culture section, we explore how the elementally agrarian Balinese worship Dewi Sri, the goddess of rice and prosperity; they even devote special places of worship for her and dedicate a special day for her each month. We compare various versions of her symbols and tales, as strong traditions perpetuate her worship among the main deities. It is no mere tale passed down through generations but an obligation that must be lived by the Balinese Hindus.

In Invite & Indulge this time we feature The Westin Resort Nusa Dua with its holiday experience in the exclusive tourism enclave that suits couples as well as family guests. As a family friendly resort, The Westin features vast facilities and programs that The Westin Kids Club has to offer young guests from 4 to 12 years of age, conveniently anticipating the holiday needs of junior travelers and giving parents a well deserved break. “‘Peak season’s greetings,” as some would express. This start of the regional holiday season has experienced a rather slow start of summer, as we parted with the rainfalls a bit later than previous years, which delayed a quick start to the season. The annual Bali Arts Festival continues its full month regale since mid June; traditional Balinese kites once again start to speck the skies sparking festive agendas such as public and hotel kite competitions; and as this goes to press, the third installment of the MRA Bali International Triathlon was pumping up into full speed of action on the Coconut Grove of the Four Seasons Resort in Jimbaran Bay. Our team was on standby there, and we’ll be sharing with you a bit of the action next edition. In the following pages we present you articles and information that we hope 6

LUXURY OF EXISTANCE InterContinental Bali Resort announces the completion of an extensive renovation project on one of the resort’s Imperial Villas. After having undergone an amazing transformation it takes the name ‘Jivana Villa’. The name ‘Jivana’ is a Sanskrit word for ‘life or existence’. Jivana Villa is secluded from mainstream resort activity and is mere footsteps away from the white sands of Jimbaran Bay. It has its own private access and paved driveway flanked by a modern interpretation of a Candi Bentar. The main entrance into the villa is a splendid marble inlaid walkway that crosses a pond and leads directly into a grand foyer. A contemporary lounging pavilion provides a shady niche away from the sun’s tropical rays where a replenishing spa ritual can be performed amidst the garden’s serenity. The showpiece of Jivana Villa is the twostorey Windsong Pavilion, accessed via a staircase as well as a timber bridge that extends from the upstairs master suite over the width of the swimming pool. This elevated pavilion, with its refreshing ocean views, is an inspiring niche for relaxation and intimate dining. Pranoto’s Art Gallery on Jalan Raya Ubud presents ‘At Home’ by the husband and wife painters, Pranoto and Kerry Pendergrast, from July 5 - 27, featuring a range of their work over the last year. Their gallery has been a centre of artistic activity in Ubud since 1996, with exhibitions, art lessons and model sessions. Pranoto exhibits his textural acrylic pieces created in these model sessions. Years of painting and drawing the model have brought the artist a confident assurance in the human subject and a way to explore the painterly concerns of colour, texture, composition, space and contour. Kerry Pendergrast has had many exhibitions in recent years in Australia and Indonesia, becoming well known for her on-site landscapes in pastel on sandpaper. In this show, she displays a diversity of medium and subject matter; landscapes in oil on canvas, and her work from the model sessions. PUPPET TALES ON ANTIQUITIES Maya Ubud Resort & Spa features a solo painting exhibition by mixed media artist NA Arnawa, through ‘Puppet Tales’ from July 17 - August 15. Arnawa will display thirty (30) of his unique artworks consisting mainly of puppet figures inspired by stories on Ramayana and Mahabharata epics. Arnawa uses mixed media including antique Bali fabric elements such as keling, cepuk, geringsing and poleng as the background. Oil and Acrylic are also used on his paintings; however he consistently introduces Balinese cloth designs as the backdrop for his puppet figures. Arnawa believes he has learnt many lessons of life from the ancient epics and this is interpreted through his work. Arnawa’s earlier work concentrated on traditional Balinese sceneries captured in colourful oils and acrylics. An increasing interest in the ancient Hindu epic tales of the Ramayana and Mahabharata inspired him to change the focus of his art in late 1985. SIMPLE STREAKS... Griya Santrian Gallery presents a solo exhibition by artist Askanadi, titled ‘Works’, featuring 12 of his paintings and 6 of his sketches. The exhibition will run through July 30 at the Griya Santrian Gallery in Sanur. Through his artworks the artist takes the viewers to contemplate, seek peace through simplicity. Lines are the most basic forms that make up an image. Meanwhile the most basic colors of all are white and black. By taking these most basic elements, Askanadi produces vibrant works of art. Under scrutiny, Askanadi’s paintings show a hint of red. To him, red is like a life giving force. Askanadi has featured various solo exhibitions since 2006, covering Berlin, Phnom Penh, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and to the current in Sanur, Bali this year. Griya Santrian; Jl. fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.

Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue
