teamtalk 06.09 SUN SETS INTO THE SECOND SEMESTER ‘Om Swastyastu...’ Welcome to Bali and the Indonesian archipelago, and welcome to June 2009 edition of Bali & Beyond. We continue to present to you articles and information that we hope will be useful to you during your adventures or in turn might inspire you to embark on one - on this island... and beyond. As we were preparing this edition we sat back and realized that we were on the threshold of the second semester. And on a recent trip to the least
contributors
To open up, this month begins with a span of news ranging from the latest re-brandings, refurbishments, and new offers and new ‘who’s who’ in the island’s tourism industry, as well as other advancements and general news. And we continue with this month’s Craft & Culture, where we meet up with a bade craftsman in the village of Kapal in the Badung regency to discuss his craft, and to highlight the spectacle of the ngaben cremation ceremonies that are so iconic to Bali. These skilfully crafted and ornate towering structures have much to tell, and our source shares with you part of the ‘insider’s story.’ In Invite & Indulge we take a brief flashback to the historical scene of Sanur, and our client shares with you some reminiscence of what she calls the ‘sweet life’ of the coast. A small hotel that has undergone much renovation and new additions to its vast facilities, yet still holding on to its core spirit, it tells of its ‘return’ through this month’s feature.
Narulita Selfiani currently shoots for a Bali-based bridal service, yet she finds time in between to shoot for herself, spanning a vast list of subjects.
Inggit Angela joined the team at Bali & Beyond last year for her internship; and now she is hooked on travel writing, as seen in this month’s Beyond Bali.
In Beyond Bali, our contributor shares with you how cities in Indonesia are starting to develop their own heritage societies; hoping that the younger generation will cherish their culture in the future, and compares it to that of Bali as a world-renowned tourist destination that must have more appreciation for its heritage preservation.
explored western part of the island, our photographic intern Novena admired the silent 360 degrees and the calm water against a striking golden sunset backdrop amidst her hunt for photos that we would feature in this month’s Action & Attractions. It happened to be her parting shot after her three-month internship with us at Bali & Beyond, and we wish her the best of luck in the continuation of her studies. And we offer our parting wishes to the first semester and see what’s in store for us in the second one that starts just here. 6

SANUR: SURYANA VS WILSON 2008 ISC Champion Dede Suryana claimed victory on May 14 over 2007 ISC Champ Lee Wilson at the Rusty Rumble in Da Jungle 6-star CocaCola ISC surfing competition, starting out his 2009 season pocketing a check for Rp 10 million and tallying up 3,000 championship points. In a final that saw some of the best waves of the day and the entire event, Suryana jumped out to an early lead by slotting into a barrel on his first try and setting the bar with a 6.5 point score. Lee wasn’t so lucky and got pinched on his first wave, getting him only a 2.5. It was clearly Suryana’s day, as towards the later part COURTESY PHOTO

fight back. At the horn the score was Suryana 17.0, Wilson 10.5. The next stop on the Coca-Cola ISC tour is Dede’s home town of Cimaja in West Java from May 20-23, which was also Lee’s chance to take Dede down at his home break. A turn of events? Read the next highlight below.
The Billabong Pro Java in Cimaja on May 23 had a riveting 30 minute final as ISC Number 2 ranked surfer Lee Wilson took over the lead in a hard fought victory against Number 13 ranked Dedy Santoso. Wilson started out slow but with his aggressive style eventually got the lead, almost landing on top of a large rock on the inside section. Santoso bravely tried to stage a comeback but couldn’t get the 8point wave he needed to regain the lead. To seal his victory, Wilson spotted a worthy wave and again ripped it apart, adding an air on the end that got him a 9.0 out of 10.0 score from the judges. He also nabbed the Coca-Cola ISC Best Maneuver Award for the wave. He was stoked to have won the event, especially in Dede’s COURTESY PHOTO

The Ngaben funerary pyre has become iconic to Bali, and in turn has become one of the highlights with visitors to the island.
T
he death rite in western cultures is often more of a dark (black) mourning color scheme, yet here it is a much more a lively spectacle. Your visit would
be rather incomplete if you missed out on witnessing such a procession. Tall elaborate and colorful structures and a bull effigy are paraded along a village street. People are cheering the lively procession that is setting its own tempo. Unsuspecting foreigners wouldn’t know that it was a dead body being paraded towards a cemetery to be reduced to ashes. Indeed, these sights are those of the Ngaben ritual,
the distinctive cremation ceremony that takes place on this unique island. Ngaben, also referred to as Pelebon, owes its fame partly to the vividly colorful tall tiered structure known as the bade. A bade is the ornate ‘coffin’ that contains the body of the deceased, and is used for transporting it to the funerary site. It is made as a form of sacrificial honor by the family for the deceased. They hope that ‘journey’. “One thing that is also prominent is the acquiescence among the family members,” recalls Anak Agung Sudarma, a bade sculptor from the village of Kapal, a famous area full of craftsmen that is located in the Badung regency. 20

With its modern Japanese interior, glass walls and green bamboo patterns, Katsusei seems to appeal to those more segmented, upper class eaters with “cutlet addiction”, which comes first before anything else. Thinking differently that those types of people, the price-conscious Rio hopes that Katsusei will collaborate with the banks to create some type of promotion in the future for customers so they can have a more fulfilling time here. In the meantime, for those Japanese food-lovers who crave novelty and a good authentic Katsu time, Katsusei is definitely the place for some joyous new experiences. ■ Text by Kathy Petite, photos by Kathy Petite and courtesy Katsusei ■ Katsusei, Grand Indonesia, East mall, Garden District 2, Level 5, Unit GD2, no.16 Jl. With the right timing and the right place, we will open another outlet.” Closing my sinfully pleasant deep-fried culinary experience, which was made perfect by ending it with soft spongy Japanese Cheesecake and mouthwatering Pistachio Mousse Cake, I sipped a cup of hot and nice Hojicha (black tea) with a hope to “dissolve” the guilt. Even though Katsu is best with hot Japanese tea (ocha), Katsusei also offers cold refreshments such as a variety of juices 52

BEYONDUPDATES TO THAI, THRICE Garuda Indonesia launched a more convenient daytime service from Bangkok to Jakarta starting on May 16, with new thrice-weekly daytime flights replacing the previous overnight service that operated seven nights a week. The new service will operate from Bangkok and Jakarta every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday using the Boeing 737 series. Flight GA867 will depart from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport at 15:10 and arrive at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta at 18:35 local time. The return service, GA866, will take off at 10:30 and arrive in Bangkok at 14:00. Bambang Sunan, Garuda Indonesia’s General Manager for Thailand, Myanmar, Laos & Cambodia, said: “The change in schedule is due to an increase in passenger demand for daytime flights into Jakarta. It also allows passengers to make easy onward connections to other regional cities or domestic destinations.” The three-hour flight to Jakarta from Bangkok can accommodate a total of 96 passengers in a two class configuration – 12 passengers in Executive Class and 84 in Economy. Earlier this year, Garuda Indonesia announced the launch of 18 domestic and regional routes including Jakarta-Lampung, Jakarta-Malang, Jakarta-Kendari, Jakarta-Kupang, Jakarta-Jambi, Denpasar-Mataram, ShanghaiDenpasar, Surabaya-Hong Kong and Denpasar-Hong Kong. FLOCKED TOGETHER FOR BIRD CONSERVATION Melia Purosani, the Kutilang Foundation, and the Natural Resources Conservation Board (BKSDA, part of the Forestry Department) recently initiated a conservation program for the Java Sparrow through periodic training and observation of the bird species. The last observation was on April 1011, and the training on April 30. The Java Sparrow (Padda oryzivora), also known as the Java Finch or Java Rice Bird, is a small passerine bird. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), the Java Sparrow is now in a vulnerable status due to hunting and diminishing ricefield habitats. UNDERDOC
Hanna Artspace in Pengosekan, Ubud presents works by young artists in an exhibition titled “Underdoc” through June 30. Feeling that they do not have a place to exhibit their works in the town of Surabaya, these creative young artists try to exhibit outside their home playgrounds in order to broaden their perspective, and for them to introspect their artistic identities. The city of Surabaya is an industrial town that possess a different dynamic art vibe compared to other cities in Indonesia. The youth’s movement show the tendency of being brought up by egalitarian spirit, lively, open and outspoken. In the current Surabaya art context, the young artists do not relate to the previous generations in any way whatsoever (the 70s to 80s generations) and try to take a stand to show that Surabaya arts is still at large. Their works have a character that is developed from the interaction with the outside world. A cross-cultural process from many cultures is present among the Surabaya society. Embarking from the cultural spirit, the artists thus try to seek their identities in the world of arts. Therefore steps are taken such as holding discussions and forming small forums, exhibitions in unusual spaces to engage in dialogues within the society, and developing external networks. The think tanks then produced the idea to exhibit their works outside Surabaya. “Underdoc”, a theme that was taken from the word play of Underdog (a term to define a loser and least considered subject), was chosen for this exhibition. They find it appropriate in representing their position in Indonesian arts on a national scale. The artists are Arif Londo, Asmuliawan, Bony Suwandi, Betara Gludhuk Banyu Murti, Endy Lukito, Romy Setiawan, Sutarno Masteng, Catur Hengky Koesworo, M. Yunisar Mursidi, Woro Indah, Sjalaby Asja, and Qusta. Hanna Artspace, Jl. Pengosekan, Ubud 081-797-308-98; hannaartspace@yahoo.co.id
DISTANCE... Tony Raka Art Gallery presents 12 artists from Java in a group exhibition. The lineup includes Ahmad Ghozaly, Aidi Yupri, Andi Cakra, Buddy Eka Putra, Giring Prihastyasono, Mulyo Gunarso, Maidil Heri, Kokoh Nugroho, Lia Mareza, Setiawan Nugroho, RB Setiawanto and Yayat Lesmana. The exhibition is held through June 18 and is curated by Agung Frigidanto. Through the exhibition, questions raised include, “ what is the correlation between space and subject?” It presents young artists who have extensive and intriguing experiences. The exhibition tries to unveil how subjectivity deals with space and further becomes something deeper and of a broader meaning. Tony Raka Art Gallery, Jl. CHILDHOOD MEMORIES Ganesha Gallery presents an exhibition of art through “Childhood Memories, Everyday Objects.” While the artistic styles of the two Balinese artists, Uuk Paramahita and I Gede Pande Paramartha, are distinctly different, their thematic material and sources of inspiration are remarkably similar. So too, both men share a love of bright colours and enigmatic imagery. In the case of Gede Paramartha, who states that his is derived from “reflections and images of my youth,” we are confronted with strange but whimsical beasts that could be from outer space, the netherworld or an electron microscope, expressed with naïve almost cartoon-like shapes. While his images may at first appear guileless, careful examination reveals a sophisticated sense of colours and complex compositions that dance on the surface with no pretence of depth. Uuk Paramahita in contrast, places his own colourful but usually less identifiable inhabitants in compositions that use stylised landscape features – rivers, islands, the sea, forests and mountains that evoke perspective but acknowledge the canvasses’ two dimensional surface. Notably almost all his works are defined by a horizon that divides the sky from the earth (or sea). VISUAL LOYALTY Antonius Kho presents his solo exhibition ‘Visual Loyalty’, delving into our consciousness of loyalty. Although there are many obstacles in the process of loyalty, we keep it true to our hearts, just like our pets that are always loyal to their masters. Antonius Kho has chosen puppies as the symbol of his theme. The natural characteristics of dogs in human culture have been constructed into becoming the creature that has a ‘method’ in living with their human counterparts. That is why in human cultures, dogs have played an important role as companions. Dogs are also bound geographically. The Kintamani dog for example, has its own characteristics. Visual Loyalty is open at the House of Sampoerna in Surabaya and is curated by Hardiman. The exhibition will be held through June 14 and is open daily from 9am to 10pm. www.antoniuskho.com 60

It would have been his 54th birthday. Smaller groups performed similar paddle outs at Bradley’s favorite surfing beaches around the island: Nusa Dua, Sanur, and Padang-Padang Beach (near Uluwatu). Later that evening in Kuta, friends and family gathered for a wake at his favorite watering hole, Tubes Bar on Poppies 2, which Bradley and fellow Aussie Steve Palmer created. fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.

HEALTH & MEDICAL Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby.
