TEAMTALK
teamtalk 02.09 HIGH LANDS AND HIGH FIVES ‘Om Swastyastu...’ Welcome to our beloved island and archipelago, and welcome to the February 2009 edition of Bali & Beyond.
started to implement upon this year’s birth, we continue to progress with the rest of the first semester, with more articles and information that we hope would be useful to you during your stay. In this edition, we take a look at what happened at the turn of the year, as it was announced that Bali was no longer rabies free and that Bali now has to face its first possible rabies outbreak. Pondering Point shares with you some of the views, from the dog’s mythical attributes to various humane efforts carried out by the island’s active and proactive animal welfare foundations. Action & Attractions share with you the fact that Bali is not just about beautiful beaches but also about lovely lakes. The area of Bedugul is a complete tourist destination full of various activities to enjoy and take part in. Our team did.
Profiles & Portraits presents you with ‘Conservational Arts’ - efforts in conserving traditional arts (specifically the art of batik and its natural dyes) and the environment at the same time. The recent idea after being part of the Perfume Master Class by Nicolas de Barry at the St. Regis Bali Resort is that you can change the roses and chocolates for Valentine’s. Read about the revealed ‘secrets’ of perfumery through Invite & Indulge.

For Capital Corner it may not be Paris, but Jakarta is well equipped to melt your heart with its different types of romanticism. So here’s your guide to the capital’s “pinkiest” spots…without literally being pink that is. Ve Handojo shares with you some of the venues. Valentine’s Day comes around the corner this month and is recognized worldwide as a special day of love. Each place has its own assortment of love tales to tell, including Bali. This theme has inspired many a traditional theatre, dance, literature, and song. Besides drama gong or sendratari, Bali also has kakawin Ramayana and geguritan Sampik Ingtai. Discover it all through Craft & Culture. And of course in the following month we’ll present to you with some scenes and tales from the fastdeveloping Tarakan Island- just east off Kalimantan. Hope to have you here by then, and as always, keep safe.
Phalayasa Sukmakarsa is a freelance photographer and translator. When not busy, you can find him roaming the city of Denpasar with a camera in hand.
Ruben Simon’s bicycle journey around Lake Tondano will hopefully prompt other riders to explore some of the “off the beaten track” places that abound in Indonesia.

FUTURE LANDING IN THE NORTH? Plans for an airport in Buleleng, North Bali remain to be officially proposed. Bali’s Governor Made Mangku Pastika stated that the development of a new airfield in Buleleng is important with the anticipation of future increases in tourist arrivals to Bali. However, Pastika admitted that the development plans are still in a proposal phase. The idea was previously brought up by Vice President Jusuf Kalla. It is believed that a second Bali airfield would help promote a balanced island economy. The Governor also stated that the plans require further discussions to fix development goals and targets.
The ‘Champion of Champions’, held on January 24 at the New Kuta Golf (NKG) was an introductory and trial for the professional Indonesian golfers before battling in the upcoming Indonesia Open 2009, besides being a chance for amateur golfers to play alongside and get to know the champions’ characters and styles. Suprapto Pegeng, NKG’s Director of Operations (pictured beside General Manager Stephen Banks PGA at a recent press conference), said “it is the right and important momentum for Indonesia’s golfing sport, besides the Indonesia Open 2009, which will be held for the first time in Bali.” The ‘Champion of Champions’, will be an annual tournament to support the appeal of the sport in Indonesia and affirm Bali as among Asia’s premier golf destinations. Tournaments in the following years will also invite ‘Champions’ from various golfing events in the ASEAN and ASIAN Tour calendars. The Indonesia Open has entered its fifth year and is a joint effort between the European Tour, Asian Tour and Persatuan Golf Indonesia (PGI). This year’s tournament will offer total prize money of US$1.25 million and will see Europe and Asia’s top players doing battle. Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport is slated to expand starting in April this year, involving the development of a new international terminal. Vice President Jusuf Kalla recently stated that the expansion project is targeted for completion by 2011. The Vice President also expressed concern over traffic congestion around the airport, which could result in a negative experience for international visitors. He further stated that the government has not yet planned to expand the runway to make way for large bodied Airbus A380 planes. Meanwhile, environmentalists say the expansion could destroy what remains of the island’s mangrove forests.

ALL FOR THE BETTER In a recent statement by Bali’s Governor Made Mangku Pastika, he said that Bali would soon set up a Disaster Management Board (BPB) in line with Law No.24/2007, Bali. According to Governor Pastika, the board would soon be established in an effort to minimize various social problems, fatalities and material losses inflicted by natural disasters in the province. The establishment of the Disaster Management Board, based on meticulous planning and study, is expected to be effective in the middle of this year. He said the existence of such a board was of great importance for Bali as the main tourist destination in Indonesia. The new board is expected to be able to map disaster-prone areas in the province and to study the possible risk from a disaster, as Bali needs to be in full alert to anticipate possible disasters that may occur anytime. The governor added that the province would soon have sophisticated technology and facilities with which to manage disasters, and to ensure the security and safety of the local people and visiting tourists. ■ SAMPIK AND INGTAI The Balinese did not only ‘import’ love stories from India, but also from China. The most popular one is Sampik Ingtai. Originally known as The Butterfly Lovers or ‘Liang Zhu’, it is a Chinese legend about, again, the tragic romance between two lovers, Liang Shanbo (otherwise ‘Sampik’ in Balinese) and Zhu Yingtai (‘Ingtai’ in Balinese). For you or do you have someone else in mind?” I replied, “My wife and I like flowery scents, and just a hint of the Rose Turquie made my choice.” His reply? “So be it! You have made a perfect choice. Proceed with two drops of each ingredient, ask Sandra to fill your bottle with alcohol, and then you’re done!” And yes, by the end of the course we got to keep a 20ml perfume bottle of our own creation. Taking home the bottle was nice… but my wife and I were spray happy by the next morning and weary of wasting our pride creation too soon, both at the same time. On the third day, in addition to learning how to create personalized massage oils, the program expanded to combine cuisine with perfume. With a menu that was personally designed by Executive Chef Oscar Perez and akin to a cooking class, guests learned the methods of cooking a dish culminating in the addition of a last dash of perfume to blend and enhance the taste and aroma of the dish. We all enjoyed a Perfume Gala Dinner the following evening accompanied with wine pairing at the Astor Ballroom. Oscar’s creations came out in a sequential lavish six-course meal blended with sifters of Nicolas’ natural fragrances that augmented the chef’s creations. And the exceptional wines were presented by the resort’s sommelier Harald. ALTERNATIVE UNIVERSE Ganesha Gallery at the Four Seasons Jimbaran presents an exhibition of paintings by artist Putu Wirantawan through March 9. In his current exhibition the artist features two series that can be viewed as wholes or individual works of art. The first of these, Connected Circles (Dalam Lingkaran Gabung), features 12 separate images dominated by circles suspended between HinduBuddhist mandalas and Compact Discs. In spite of the restrictive nature of the compositions, which bind them together, every painting also stands alone. The second series consists of four equal sized panels. The images here are decidedly more architectural with various pyramidal shapes, some with steps. All of these structures and the magical symbols that hover between them seem to vibrate and glow with mysterious power, created by Putu’s time-consuming use of miniscule parallel lines with gaps. While it is easy to speculate on hidden meanings and mystery, the taciturn artist refuses to deny or affirm spiritual value either by labeling his works much less talking about them. His art springs from his own imagination and he has no pretence of projecting its value on others. He does not seek to teach but to share. Those who accept his invitation will not be disappointed. Gallery opening hours are 9 am - 6 pm. Ganesha Gallery, Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay (0361) 701-010, www.fourseasons.com/jimbaranbay

RESORT ‘N ROTARY REVELRY Hyatt Resorts Bali’s “Year-End Appreciation Party” was held in the Grand Ballroom at Grand Hyatt Bali on December 18, 2008. Both the Bali Hyatt and the Grand Hyatt Bali organised the event, aimed at demonstrating the hotel’s appreciation for the support these partners had displayed towards the two properties throughout 2008. Meanwhile, co-sponsors Grand Hyatt Bali and Rotary Club Bali Nusa Dua joined forces to put together a charity event to benefit underprivileged children in Bali. First conceived by Mr. Peter Stettler, Regional General Manager of Hyatt Hotels in Indonesia, this has been an annual event over the past years. Children from several orphanages and one school for the disadvantaged in Bali (Maria Gorethi, Eben Haezer, Widiasih, Hope Children Home, Al Fatah, YPAC, Semaraputra, El Shaday Putra, and Manahaim) were invited to join the celebration. www.hyatt.com.
OF SURF ‘N GOLF! Nusa Dua Golf & Country Club hosted the inaugural Coca Cola Bottling Indonesia versus PT Quiksilver Indonesia Challenge in December. The elite Quiksilver Golf team consisting of CEO Paul “Hutty” Hutson , Sports Marketing guru Jake “ The Snake “ Paterson, Professional Surfer Tipi “ Tiger“ Jabrik, and Neil “ Springbok “ Power took part in golfing. The contest was tight after the first 9 holes, with Quiksilver up by a mere two holes, but on the back 9 they really found their swing and wiped the greens with the Coke team led by Bruce Waterfield. The rules for the day were unique; a two ball Ambrose with every team member having to count 6 drives per team making it a great challenge for the part time golfers and full time surfers. The prize was that the losers had to shout dinner. The trophy now sits proudly in Hutty’s office on top of his Coke fridge. www.isctour.com.
