EVER-EVOLVING BALI ‘Om Swastiastu...’ Are we the only ones who feel like the year 2013 went by in the blink of an eye? It’s hard to believe that the year is coming to a close and 2014’s gleam can already be seen just around the next corner, luring us in with promises of adventure, romance and exciting experiences that will top 2013. To everyone who has traveled to this paradise island from far and wide: a warm welcome to you all! The traffic does get fairly dense here during the month of December, but at least you’re guaranteed a myriad of options when it comes to celebrating Christmas and/or the New Year. So don’t forget to turn to FEAST & FESTIVITIES to see our list of glittering fetes and tantalizing dinners around the island that will hopefully tickle your fancy. As for the ladies who want to step out in style, get your outfit inspiration from our FASHION FOLIO, which features designs from fantastic local talents such as Ali Charisma and Oka Diputra (whose pieces, by the way, made an appearance in a recent episode of America’s Next Top Model, cycle 20). Bali has changed quite a bit this year – there are many new roads and businesses, not to mention a sophisticated new airport! The landscape here is constantly evolving, and even the mainstays have decided to undergo renovations so as to not get left behind. Get caught up with all the latest developments in this issue, and learn how you can give back to the community as a token of thanks for your lovely holiday spent here. We hope you have a fantastic festive season. Thanks for reading, and we’ll see you in the New Year! ‘Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om…’ The Team

MAKUH CEREM ONY
The makuh ceremo ny is performed before the melasp as ceremony. Makuh means to become strong. Part of the offerin g will be colored red, black and wh ite (referred to as tri datu) to give str ength to the new house. Some Balin ese will draw three small lines (red, black and white) in every co rner of their hous e to maintain this “s trength.”
MELASPAS CEREM ONY
Melaspas means an act of cleansing. The ma in purpose of a melaspas ceremo ny is to clean the energy of the ne w house in hope s
that the homeow ners will be able to enjoy their sta y for the rest of their life. Melaspas not on ly cleans the energy of a new house but also shows gratitude to nature for what it provides. Woo d, stone, clay, sand and glass ar e all materials taken from nature, and without them it would not be po ssible to build a house.
In Bali, the melasp as ceremony is conducted not only for new houses but also fo r other kinds of buildings such as temples, offices/ workspaces, ware houses and animal cages. A Balinese priest must first be cons ulted in order to find out the best date to conduct the ceremony an d what offerings must be prepared . This specific date is calculated through Balinese astrology, and the ceremony is led by a Balinese pr iest. It usually take s at least one day, but it depends on how big the cere mony is.

QUIRKY THINGS Joger Bali is a Balinese t-shirt brand famous for printing witty and funny phrases on their products (these are for the most part in Indonesian). The brand was founded in the early 80’s and since then has become a popular choice for unique souvenirs from Bali. Both domestic and international visitors can be found rummaging through the extensive range of products at their Kuta shop – from their iconic t-shirts to mugs and home decorations. Some examples of their quirky products are a wall clock that shows time going counter-clockwise and giant flip-flops with their trademark

These mini milk pies are not necessarily traditional Balinese snacks, but they have become one of the top food gifts to bring from Bali. Also, don’t forget to pick up some Rahayu salted peanuts! The eccentricity of the brand can also be seen in the wall decorations, with phrases like “West-East, EastWest, but Bali is the best!” or (this one is translated) “No man is perfect, I myself am tangible proof.” Without even bringing anything to the register, visiting Joger is a treat in itself. You’re originally from Rome. What was your favorite meal as a young boy? Pork, in particular porchetta. It’s the Italian babi guling! We’re loving the home-style cooking here. Who used to cook for you back home? My grandma was the main cook. And she had six daughters, so I was in paradise. We caught up with Executive Chef Rossano Renzelli during our visit for a brief chit chat about his family and his memories of Italy...
Wow... in that kind of house, how could you not grow up loving food? (laughs) Yes! If there’s something you don’t like, once you’re in Italy you’re gonna like it! At Bene, I want to cook

What’s your favorite new dish on the menu? The Fettucini with lobster. Also the rabbit-stuffed Tortellini with oxtail sauce.
Tell us about your tattoos. How many do you have? Banyak (many)! I like to draw so my tattoos are my own design. These are souvenirs from my travels – some people get stickers for their car; I get stickers for my skin.
What do you usually cook when you’re not at work? At home, my wife is the one who cooks. She usually tells me to get out of the kitchen before I start commenting! How about your daughter, who’s cooking does she prefer? My 8-year old daughter likes
What countries are your tattoos mementos of? Argentina, the UK, Germany, Italy, France… In Bali I had my arm filled in and the tattoo artist didn’t trace at all, he just drew freely. I started with one, now I look like a newspaper!

hardly unique to Indonesia. But sometimes you are confronted by something that just can’t be ignored. Earlier this year I opened Facebook to discover photographs posted by Sole Men Indonesia (a non-profit organization) of two families who were living in absolute squalor in a tiny house in Denpasar. Seven of the ten children suffer from a genetic abnormality that has left them physically and mentally handicapped. Pictures of the 17 and 20-year old men, filthy and crippled in pain, were absolutely heart breaking. Their pain and suffering screamed out from the images; for them life was nothing but a living hell. Even

BRAWA STREET EATERIES HERE ARE THREE OF OUR FAVORITE LITTLE EATERIES AND HANGOUTS ON JALAN PANTAI BRAWA IN CANGGU.
BUNGALOW Open for just a year now, Bungalow has quickly become one of the favorite places in Canggu for people to grab a bite to eat or have afternoon tea/coffee. This café has the kind of warm and quirky décor that makes you feel so comfortable you end up lingering there for hours. Open for breakfast and lunch on weekdays and Saturdays, they offer healthy and delicious menu items based on co-owner Giovanna’s personal recipes. We particularly love the delicious range of flourless and gluten-free cakes like the Peanut Butter & Banana Cake made with freshly grinded homemade peanut butter. Bungalow also offers a range of colorful home wares designed and produced themselves, such as cushions, home accessories and tote bags. And on Fridays from 3 to 6 p.m. Giovanna’s husband Donald (a Balinese jazz musician) has impromptu jam sessions with his buddies in the intimate space. Recently, the husband-wife team have also opened up the Bungalow Gallery, which sits opposite the café. The gallery features Giovanna’s photography and2013 their own range of furniture. PASTA GRAGE Open on weekdays for lunch, this charming little eatery offers wonderful homemade pasta and a homey atmosphere, set within the cool and shady porch area of the owner’s house. Place an order for their signature menu item, the Pasta Grage, and you’ll get a generous portion of perfectly cooked al dente pasta of your choice (fettuccini, spaghetti or penne) with delicious tuna and Danish blue cheese cream sauce that will have you wanting more. Pair the pasta with their freshly-squeezed ice lemon tea that is so fresh you can taste the lemon pulp. The best thing about this place is the fact that their prices are kind to your wallet – a definite bang for your buck! As you savor your meal, you might come across the owner’s unbelievably cute cat, Choki. Don’t be surprised if he hops onto your lap and decides to relax there for a bit.

BUTTER CAKE & COFFEE SHOP Sitting at one end of Jalan Pantai Brawa near the Canggu Club, Butter offers some of the most scrumptious cakes on the island. Open on weekdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., you can order their Cake of the Day and enjoy it in their bright and cozy interior. We love the Chocolate Orange Bundt Cake – soft and luscious with a sweet chocolate crust, it tastes amazing paired with a cup of hot cappuccino (with a cute bear drawn in the foam!). Other than their ready-to-eat baked goods, Butter also sells made-to-order cakes for occasions like weddings and birthdays. Place your order roughly 1-2 weeks in advance, as they’re often flooded with orders. In the near future Butter is planning an extension to its shop to accommodate the ever-rising

VOWS IN PARADISE The folks at Axioo love Bali so much that they couldn’t resist making its magnificent landscapes the backdrop for capturing countless love stories. As their minds overflowed with ideas, they decided to set up a showrom in the Kerobokan area and have since documented numerous weddings, engagements and even family holidays in paradise. Take a look at some of their work and marvel at how well they have incorporated the Balinese landscape into these romantic shots. For more details, visit their showroom at Jalan Kerobokan No. 118, or website at www.axioo.com and email vina@axioo.com.

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
