SHED SOME LIGHT ‘Om Swastiastu...’

Living a harmonious life – that sounds simple, but in reality it’s not that easy. To live in harmony means not only do we have to care for humans but also our natural surroundings. This island is known worldwide for its natural splendor that will bring visitors closer to Mother Earth, but the hands of humans sometimes takes its beauty away – and it starts from simple things like trash on the beach.

COVER Amistad de 2 gueisas by Mersuka Dopazo

The responsibility of keeping the island beautiful is in all of our hands. And that is why we are dedicating this month to inviting everyone to care more about the environment, and to support those who are trying to make a difference.

Don’t forget to flip through to CRAFT & CULTURE to find out how the Balinese live in balance with Tri Hita Karana, a concept that we can all apply in our lives. We hope you enjoy reading and, maybe, you’ll be inspired to create something new to help preserve nature on this island.

FACTS ABOUT TRI HITA KARANA • Most resorts in Bali use Tri Hita Karana as their business philosophy. •In 2013, the former president of Indonesia Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono suggested that APEC adopt the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana in order to achieve sustainable and equitable economic development, one of the three main pillars for development in APEC. • UNESCO stated that the subak system (water irrigation system for farming in Bali) reflects the Tri Hita Karana concept, which has enabled the Balinese to become the most prolific rice growers in the archipelago despite the challenge of supporting a dense population. UNESCO added the Subak System to their world heritage list.

BIOWEAR First established in 2014, Biowear has quickly made its mark on Bali with its vision of returning the island to the pristine condition it used to be without forgetting locals and tourists need for basic amenities. How do they do it? Simply by cutting down plastic consumption through offering eco-friendly alternatives for everyday long-term and single use conventional plastic consumption. Spearheading their mission to cut the usage of plastic on the island is their first product, the Eco Poncho. This unique product aims to change the status quo of the commonly used vinyl rain poncho that has been utilized for many years. Biowear’s Eco Ponchos are made completely from soya and cornstarch and sunflower seeds, which give its international standard 100% biodegradable and compostable feature when left in the ground for 90 days. Priced at Rp. 125,000, the Eco Poncho comes in three different yet still stylish designs. And if you’re worried about it crumbling after a few heavy rainfalls as we’ve experienced in the past view

SARDINE Amidst Petitenget’s rapid urbanization, a French-Slovakian, Bali resident couple created the finedining restaurant Sardine to reflect their green roots and sustainability ethos – from cuisine down to the building – and evoke the spirit and scenes of old Bali of which they reminisce about. Sardine’s cuisine is light, island-inspired, and infused with Asian and European influences with daily changing menus dependent on locally sourced, seasonal based and the freshest ingredients – top-notch seafood and organic vegetables are key Jimbaran’s fish markets. on is necessary, as well as finding alternative practices (and that includes visitors to the island, who in their own country may practice eco-friendly routines, but invariably forget to do so here.) For short-term solutions, local beach authorities may be proud of their internationally-sponsored dump trucks clearing rubbish each morning, backed-up by a few dozen workers collecting trash by hand. But the beach needs hundreds of rubbish collectors employed as more trash reappears again in the afternoon hours, washed in with the surf. At this time of day, there’s hardly any afternoon clean-up activity evident – apart from a handful of beach sellers and lifeguards taking it upon themselves to do so, as this can greatly affect their daily livelihood. Instead, some afternoons the plastic and general rubbish still lurks on the shoreline, ready for when everyone flocks down for Kuta Beach’s legendary sunset. Even if it all seems like a hopeless task, arguably there should be better organization to manage all the reappearing debris after the morning shift, even just showing to beachgoers that an effort is being made. It is down to everyone, including local authorities, the government, litter louts on surrounding islands, visitors, locals, manufacturers of plastic containers and resident businesses to all help turn around what is essentially a global environmental problem. Visitors can be quite incredulous about the rubbish accumulated on one of the world’s most iconic beaches, but perhaps they too can do their bit and set a good example, from taking away cigarette butts and rubbish off the beach to substituting re-useable cloth bags for plastic while out shopping – everyone’s plastic bags, straws and bottles can end up in the sea – to helping organize regular local beach clean-ups. This is one of the world’s favourite holiday islands and needs to be kept that way – even Bali Governor Pastika was recently moved to urge locals, ‘’Guard the Island’s cleanliness and manage waste,’’ and imploring, “Let’s fix these things, because we live from tourism.’’ By Katie Truman

A JOURNEY TO THE KARIMATA ISLANDS A NEW ECO-PIONEER PROJECT HAS KICKED OFF, AND NOW FOR THE FIRST TIME PEOPLE CAN VISIT THE REMOTE KARIMATA ISLANDS, OFF THE COAST OF WEST KALIMANTAN. After stepping down from the pier I had to scramble across a number of suspect, unseaworthy looking boats and was delighted to spot mine — a very smart looking speedboat bound for Sukadana. We took off with a rush and kept up a steady, even pace for the next four hours, all the way to Sukadana. We shared the Kapuas River with many local boats, larger barges and smaller crafts, as the Nipa palms

JAZZY JAKARTA ONCE A YEAR, THE BIG DURIAN HOLDS A THREE-DAY INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL, AND BOY, YOU GET SPOILED WITH ALL THOSE WORLD-CLASS PERFORMANCES…

66

BALI&BEYOND APRIL 2015

I

t was that time of the year again as the Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival, one of the biggest jazz festivals in the world, attracted thousands of music enthusiasts. Held

on the first weekend of March as usual, this festival started its journey back in 2005 at the Jakarta Convention Centre with almost 50,000 visitors. Each year, more and more musicians are invited to perform, and not just from the jazz genre. The numbers of visitors also grew bigger and bigger, until finally in 2010 the festival had to be held at the Jakarta International Expo in Kemayoran, one of the largest spaces for events in Jakarta. This year’s Java Jazz Festival had more than 10 stages for all the music stars.

WORLD-CLASS PERFORMERS This festival has already hosted some of the biggest names in the music industry, such as Stevie Wonder, Jamie Cullum, Toni Braxton, and Natalie Cole. This year more top stars added their names to the festival, as around 55 international performers hit the stage including Jessie J, Incognito, Christina Perri, Chris Botti, and Lisa Ono. Give or take there were almost 90 local musicians playing at the festival, including Benny Likumahuwa, Gilang Ramadhan, and one of Indonesia’s younger singers, Tulus. A vocal group called 3 Diva, consisting of Indonesia’s legendary singers, Krisdayanti, Titi DJ, and Ruth Sahanaya, gave a stunning Christina Perri was one of this year’s Java Jazz Festival performers

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
