TEAMTALK
FOR THE LOVE OF ART ‘Om Swastiastu...’
The Balinese surely have an eye for intricate details – from their simple canang (offerings) placed on the side of the street to the detailed craftsmanship on their traditional houses and temples, you can see that the Balinese are fond of the aesthetic art that they express in their daily lives. The Ogoh-Ogoh Parade is one of the best examples of how the Balinese love of art plays an important role in their many rituals. The parade, also known as Pengerupukan Day, is held one day prior to Silent Day, where monstrous dolls (ogoh-ogoh) representing the dark forces are marched on the streets before being destroyed and burned to keep Mother Earth in

balance. But the equally interesting part is the making of the ogoh-ogoh – using eco-friendly material, an ogoh-ogoh is made by a large group of people as our contributor Agung Parameswara explains in ‘Craft & Culture’. Bali is also home to contemporary art, where numerous talented artists, local and international, reside or visit on a regular basis. View from a Cloud, an art movement established in 2015, aims to make contemporary art more easily accessible to everyone by creating a virtual gallery that connects art enthusiasts to the artists. They also host exhibitions regularly – flip through ‘Foto Folio’ to see their creations. Meanwhile, the Dream Museum Zone in Seminyak boasts a number of 3D paintings. With a bit of imagination and creativity, you can make fun photos with these paintings – check out ‘Little Loves’ to see our version of fun at the museum. Of course we have lots more stories just for you, like searching for unique bed and breakfasts in Bali in ‘Rest & Relaxation’ and an interview with renowned Balinese shoe businesswoman Niluh Djelantik in ‘Profile & Portrait’. So make yourself comfortable and… happy flipping through our pages!

WHERE IT ALL BEGINS The Ogoh-Ogoh Parade became popular in 1983 when President Suharto announced that the Silent Day was officially a national holiday. The Balinese Hindus welcomed this news with much joy and they celebrated by making ogoh-ogoh, which were then known as “onggokan”. In 1990, ogoh-ogoh were paraded in the 12th Bali Art Festival that was joined by all eight

His statement reminded me of the time I witnessed my 13-year-old brother Gungde Rangga Wijaya making an ogohogoh with his peers after school for two weeks. feeling to the place. MoVida Bali looks very unique with classic furniture made of rattan and teak, created by the island’s talented craftsmen. Upon entering the restaurant, guests will be greeted by friendly staff and escorted to their table, just like what I experienced during my visit to MoVida Bali one beautiful night. As soon as I was seated, one of the waitresses assisted me with the menu – which I needed as I’m not really familiar with Spanish cuisine. Turns out the staff at MoVida Bali are really helpful as they have a

The combination of the three was like fireworks in my mouth.

as she shared her experiences as one of the most influential footware businesswomen in the world, despite the fact that she actually comes from a very small town in Bali. So, what is her secret to success? Check out the interview… BB: What made you fall in love with shoes? ND: The answer is simple: the love itself. It is simply my love and history with shoes that brought me to where I am today. When I was a child, my shoes were always too big. My mother had very little money at that time, so she bought me shoes that were too big for me so that they would last for a couple of years until I outgrew them. I began to love shoes and told myself that someday I would own shoes

So why not head down to Puri Santrian Beach Resort & Spa to experience Seawalker? Get a little taste of what it might feel like to be Ariel. Afterwards, you will be led to a boat waiting just off the white sand beach that will ferry you to the pontoon sitting about 500 meters from the shore. An instructor will give you one last briefing on simple hand signals for communicating once you’re in the water. Make sure you listen to the instructions, because it’s really important for you to be able to understand how to communicate in case of an emergency. The staff will then put a harness on you, and once you’ve climbed down the stainless steel ladder at the end of pontoon and are about shoulder deep in the water, the staff will put a special pressurized diving helmet on you that will let you

OUR CONTRIBUTOR TAUFAN WIJAYA TAKES US TO KOTAGEDE, THE MECCA OF SILVERSMITHING IN YOGYAKARTA, CENTRAL JAVA…
A
s the center of silver handicrafts in Yogyakarta, Kotagede has its own charm, but somehow
it is often taken for granted by the locals. I have to admit that I used to be one of those people – I just visited Kotagede about six months ago despite the fact that my grandfather was actually born and raised in that area. Truth be told, I used to pass through Kotagede all the time and saw many silversmiths in the area, but never had the time to stop by to investigate closer. Then one day my curiosity got the best of me and I decided it was time to explore the city of my ancestor’s.

and Kotagede became known merely as a place where silver crafts used to be made. But during my visit I found out that there are still many silversmiths living and working there – some still remain as small family businesses while others have joined big silver companies.
MEET THE SILVERSMITHS I took some time to visit a big workshop and watched one of the silversmiths, Heri by name, who had just finished a brooch that morning. The workshop Heri works in is adjacent to a showroom that opens at 8.30 a.m. – the showroom is divided into several rooms, each designated to display a type of

jewelry; for instance, one room is full of rings, while the other is for necklaces. What captivated me the most were the beautiful and colorful old tiles from the colonial era that were laid under an old credenza that was maybe of the same age as the tiles. When noon arrived, Heri’s colleagues started to come to work. Some of them are temporary workers who are hired to finish a massive order. The silversmiths work as a team, each with his or her own specific task: to weld, to shape the silver wire, to design and more. I was then off to a different workshop, and found Jumiyem (43) who was transforming tangled wires into a butterfly. Working at one of the wooden tables in the workshop,

Candy Dulfer once again gave a remarkable performance as well as David Foster, Chris Botti and Sting, marking the closing of this year’s Java Jazz Festival. For more than ten years this festival has been the benchmark of the progress of music in Indonesia, especially jazz, with visitors coming in not just from across Indonesia but also other countries including Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam. These visitors come with the same desire – to see their idols performing live on stage and enjoy the music all through the night. With that in mind, there is no doubt that the Java Jazz Festival is one of the most anticipated music festivals in the country – and I can’t wait to see who will be performing next year! Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
