SUMMER IN PARADISE ‘Om Swastiastu...’

August is the best time to visit Bali – the sun is shining bright but the wind coming from Australia makes this island feel cool and breezy. Although the weather may be unpredictable due to global warming – rain is still pouring down up until July – we believe that this shouldn’t stop you from experiencing the best of Bali, especially when a lot of parties are scheduled to liven up the island this month. The Sunny Side Up Festival, Ubud Village Jazz Festival, and Jazz Market by the Sea

are just a few of the upcoming events that you shouldn’t miss in August – flip through ‘Lifestyle & Leisure’ to see the details and to find out about other events that are waiting for you. And for the gentlemen, if you want to look good for these parties, make sure you first pay a visit to Shearlock – Barber, Shop, Coffee that we reveal in ‘Invite & Indulge.’ This month, why don’t you go to Canggu, one of the blooming areas in Bali? Our ‘Little Loves’ discovers places to have breakfast, lunch, afternoon bites and dinner in the area. Or hop on a fast boat and cruise to Nusa Lembongan, where hidden gems are waiting to be discovered. Find the story in ‘Action & Attraction.’ From outside of Bali, our contributor Amelia Winnie has tasted a number of ice creams and gelatos in Jakarta, which she shares in ‘Capital Corner’, while Taufan Wijaya explores Batam, the next tourist destination in Indonesia in ‘Beyond Bali.’ All these stories are especially compiled for you so you can have the best summer experience in Bali and across the archipelago. So… enjoy your summer getaway!

Brought to the island by PTT Family and Ismaya Live, this two-day festival will take place at the Potato Head Beach Club Bali on August 13 and 14. This annual festival will have a full line-up ranging from DJs to live acts – some of the big names are Disclosure, Mark Ronson, Breakbot, Hermitude and Blonde. The Sunny Side Up Festival is even more special because not only does it focus on bringing the world’s best-known live music, it also embraces the tropical vibe of Seminyak. The stage and bars are made out of locally sourced and eco-friendly materials, and local communities are also involved during the whole event. Tickets start from Rp. 900,000 nett. www.sunnysideupfest.com

Balinese rituals and culture spotted at Kampoeng Bali at RIMBA Jimbaran Bali.

FULL MOON FEAST Full Moon is celebrated every month in Bali, and Kampoeng Bali at RIMBA Jimbaran Bali by AYANA has its own way to mark this special night. On August 19, Kampoeng Bali will present a “Full Moon Party”, which is complete with a sunset ceremony, an authentic cultural performance, and some Balinese classic recipes in their buffet dinner. Another Balinese dining experience is also waiting at Orchid, also at RIMBA Jimbaran Bali by AYANA. For the whole month of August, Orchid is offering a “Megibung Table” that will indulge guests with Megibung, a festive feast in Bali that involves local food served on banana leaves, enjoyed together by eating with your hands. The Megibung Table is truly authentic, as guests will get sarongs, sashes and male headdress to wear and be entertained by a Balinese cooking performance prior to mealtime. There will also be Balinese traditional music called rindik to accompany the dining experience. The “Megibung Table” is available at Rp. 850,000++/adult and Rp. 425,000++/child. www.rimbajimbaran.com

Another jazz festival will be held toward the end of August, but this one comes with a market and is located by the sea! Yes, it’s none other than the Jazz Market by the Sea, which returns for its sixth year. Held at Taman Bhagawan in Tajung Benoa from August 19 to 21, this year’s Jazz Market by the Sea will showcase a number of remarkable artists like KLA Project, White Shoes and The Couples Company, Erik Sondhy, Lisa Soul and many more. Numerous food and market stalls will showcase local arts and crafts, and tickets to the three-day festival are priced at Rp. 250,000 nett, and daily tickets are also available. www.jazz-market.com

BALI&BEYOND AUGUST 2016

ABSTRACT What is photography and what is ‘art’? Truth to be told, there’s no need to debate this as long as the image creates a powerful emotional response in the mind of the viewer. The digital age has turned traditional photography on its head, blurring the boundaries between pure photography and ‘art’. Although Photoshop was first released 26 years ago, it is only in the last few years that home computers have become powerful enough to fully exploit the creative universe that tools such as Photoshop can cheaply provide. And so, the age of ‘photographic abstractionism’ begins. The debate between photography and digital art is best addressed by looking at popular ‘photography’ websites. Two of the best for serious photography are www.1X.com and www.500px.com. Interestingly, both of these sites equally cover ‘digital art’ and traditional photography. So it doesn’t matter how an image is created. If it’s amazing, it will evoke an emotional response and that is the magic of a great photography and art! Over the years this small island has gained more popularity and has officially become another getaway option for tourists in Bali. Getting to Lembongan is pretty easy – you can just go to Sanur Beach and take a shuttle boat over to the island. These days there are plenty of shuttle boat operators to choose from, and most of them use fiberglass fast boats with 1,000 horsepower engines and are up to international safety standards. Beware

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
