TEAMTALK
BID FAREWELL TO 2015 ‘Om Swastiastu...’ It is hard to believe that another year will soon pass. It feels as if it was only yesterday that our journey into 2015 began, and now, in the blink of an eye, we’ll soon say good-bye to another year. For some people this is the time to contemplate and ask questions like, “Have I made my dreams come true?” or “Is this year better than the last one?” or “What should my resolutions be for next year?” Let’s put those questions aside for a while, and remember that you deserve to close 2015 splendidly, especially if you’re spending the end of the year on this island. South Bali is going to be even more alive with a massive number of parties for sure, and that’s

why we think it’s best for you stay in the heart of Kuta and Seminyak so you won’t miss any fun events due to traffic. Flip through ‘REST & RELAXATION’ to discover the best four places to stay in Kuta and Seminyak, where nightlife is only a stroll away but serenity is still found within the hotel walls. Don’t forget to spend an intimate Christmas and New Year’s Eve meal with your loved ones. Our ‘DINE & DELIGHTS’ points you towards the authentic Indonesian food at Republik 45, where you can have a hearty lunch or dinner with family and friends, while ‘LITTLE LOVES’ reveals places where you can have fabulous afternoon tea and indulge in a delectable Christmas and New Year’s Eve dinner in Bali. On another note, 2015 also witnessed some environmental issues, like the forest fires across Indonesia and the extinction of many animal species due to human greed. We sure hope that 2016 will bring changes in these areas, and that’s why we invite you to read ‘BEYOND BALI’ where our contributor Paul V. Walters shares about his river journey in Borneo, just a couple of months before the island was set on fire. All in all, we hope you have fabulous memories of 2015 and a more wonderful journey ahead next year. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! ‘Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om…’ The Team

own community while some others take it to the next level by becoming professionals. We are lucky that dancing is a huge part of our daily lives – the local government agrees that culture should be part of our education system and many parents encourage their children to learn the island’s identity. The tourism industry is still counting on the preservation of culture as well, and that’s why being a dancer is still considered a noble profession in Bali. Let’s just hope that this value will last for many centuries to come.
WIRAGA WIRAMA WIRASA To become a good dancer, the Balinese believe that these three aspects should be mastered: • Wiraga: the ability to master the body’s movement. It is not only about being able to do the routine, but also to understand every single meaning behind the movement.

TAKSU Taksu is the ability to translate artistry into a performance. It is not only about amazing body movements and a good understanding of music and expression, but also about putting your soul into the dance. Taksu takes a dancer to a different level of art. With Taksu, a dance performance is not just a show but also an inspiration. It somehow makes the audience enchanted by the performance and able to feel the emotion of the dance. Some people say taksu is a spiritual power, others define it as charisma. Many also believe that a dancer can master Taksu through prayer, while some say that

So basically, lempuyang means “holy light of God.” The Balinese Hindus believe that the Lempuyang temple is a shrine to venerate Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa as manifested in the Lord Icwara. It is believed that people who would like to embark on a career in the government should worship Lord Icwara at the Lempuyang temple in order to be able to uphold the best values in serving people. A pilgrimage to the Lempuyang temple is quite the challenge – it is necessary to climb thousands of stairs in order to get there. At the start of the journey, the pemangku (priest) will remind us about certain things that we should and shouldn’t do. Among the things that are forbidden are harsh talk, complaining or saying you’re tired and giving up, horse play, and littering along the way. Whether you are embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage or just to looking to take a tour, here are some tips to help make the most of your experience: • To visit the temples listed above, one day will definitely not be enough. It will take approximately three or four days to visit all of these temples. Consult with your travel agent to get the perfect routes. • If you are planning to go to the Lempuyang temple, dedicate an entire day for the trip, considering the thousands of stairs you will have to climb. • Prepare yourself with traditional Balinese prayer attire because it is forbidden to enter these holy places
28
without it. Usually locals near the temples can provide you with attire to rent for your visit. • You will see a box on the temples with two words written: Dana Punia. This is a charity box where you can place money. The money from the charity box is used for temple maintenance. There is no rule on the amount that you can give – it really depends on your willingness. If you don’t feel like donating, it is not a problem. • For those who just want to visit (versus undertaking a spiritual pilgrimage), ask your tour guide to provide you with offerings, or you can simply go to the market to buy some prior to your trip.

First, they have to have a place to keep the books – it could be a shelf in a house or an up-and-running library. Second, there are children around who will have access to those books and get benefit from them. HIGHER THAN THE CLOUDS Once upon a time, about 15 million years ago, the Australian tectonic plate crashed into the Eurasian, causing the island of Flores to rise from the ocean. Chains of volcanoes emerged creating a volcanic arc, and this island soon became a part of an archipelago in the Ring of Fire. Stretched out over 354 kilometers, the snake-shaped island of Flores has 14 volcanoes that are still active today – dangerous but spectacular, perilous but picturesque. There are nine regencies in Flores, each of them has more than one volcano with different shapes, sizes, and characteristics – some have large empty craters while others are filled with water that then have become lakes. Kelimutu (1639 meters) is one of the most popular mountains in Flores, as it is surrounded by a three-colored lake that changes color on an irregular basis, while Inerie (2229 meters) is shaped like a Gyza pyramid and is known as one of the most beautiful volcanoes in Indonesia and home to traditional villages. Far to the east is where a double volcano lies, and it’s called Lewotobi (1652 meters and 1578 meters) – which the locals recognize as a husband and wife. And if you want to witness the sunrise and sunset, go to Ile Ape (1449 meters) – the view is unforgettable. By Valentino Luis Photos by Valentino Luis https://www.flickr.com/photos/elvisdmendez 48

Some sit at rather acute angles, tottering on stilts as high as 12 meters in order to cope with the river’s dramatic rise and falls. Running through the hotchpotch structures is a wooden boardwalk connecting the waterborne residents to dry land. As we stepped aboard the boat, the last sound I heard was the clack clack

For the remainder of the journey we chug sedately at four knots, gliding past illegal gold miners and tiny villages that cling to life on the riverbanks, and witness camouflaged doe-eyed fishermen eking out their catch and children romping joyfully in the shallows as only children can. Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
