ISLAND CALLING ‘Om Swastiastu...’
The clock was ticking and soon it was 12 a.m. sharp. Sounds of trumpet horns filled the air and colorful fireworks painted the night sky. Everyone cheered, “Happy New Year!” And so another year has passed, and a new year has begun. At this point one usually has new resolutions like a healthier life, a better job or simply a fresh start – the latter is probably easy to find in Bali if you spend the beginning of 2017 here.

BEACH DAY OUT
BLOW THE CANDLES Being one of the most notable spa pioneers in Indonesia, Martha Tilaar Spa never stops creating new surprises for their customers. Last December the spa launched its newest treatment named Candlelosophy, a massage treatment that uses candles made of unique herbs, spices, fruits and flowers from Indonesia such as ginger, sandalwood, palm oil, mango, kemuning and more. How does it work? When the candle is lit, a part of the candle will melt and turn into oil. The therapist will then spread the oil onto your body and you can feel the warm sensation as the oil is dropped onto your skin, while the aroma of the flowers and herbs will make you even more relaxed. This candle massage is believed to make your skin healthy and flawless, and the warm sensation of the candle will help your blood circulation, exfoliate the dead skin and most importantly, regenerate inactive skin cells. Aside from launching their Candlelosophy, Martha Tilaar Spa also introduced the Eastern Garden, a signature spa sanctuary under the Martha Tilaar Group. The Candlelosophy treatment is ideally conducted at the Eastern Garden because the place offers the best quality of herbs and spices, and that is what Candlelosophy is all about. The ceremony may cost a lot though, so to save money this ritual is often held prior to a wedding ceremony or sometimes before a cremation (also known as the ngasti or maligia ritual) to honor their ancestors. The mepandes ceremony also involves a sangging, a man who is especially trained and religiously sanctioned as a tooth-filer. For the ceremony of Brahmantya Murti and his siblings, it was Ida Bagus Kakiang Rai that was appointed to be the sangging. The sangging

The process begins when the sangging places a small piece of sugarcane in the corner of the participant’s mouth – this is to keep the participant’s jaw open while the sangging is filing their teeth. The upper canine teeth are filed down first, followed by the lower ones. The actual process takes around 10 to 15 minutes for each person. “Filing down the teeth represents our striving to tame what the Balinese Hindu consider as the six enemies of a human,” said the

SHARING IS CARING Kaum boasts a hip interior design with a warm vibe. The restaurant is filled with wooden furniture, hanging plants, and a long communal table, perfect for those who want to dine casually with family and friends. The interior will steal one’s attention easily, and the menu is just as interesting. The list is extensive but don’t feel overwhelmed, because the restaurant’s staff will be more than happy to help give you food recommendations. Sitting at the communal table with some friends of mine, I was drooling already when the Batagor was served as our starter. Batagor

Beautiful Desire
Titled “Sex in the Garden”, this art collection by Naomi Samara, a Bali-based self-taught visual artist, was born through the artist’s recognition that nature is actually rich with what she was trying to find within herself. As she observed nature, Naomi found the most honorable form of beauty in the intricate structures of flowers and their raw sexual vulnerability. “I see the flowers as me turned inside-out. The core is revealed on the surface while the inevitable layers of truths that accumulate over time remain underneath,” Naomi stated. Aside from being an artist, Naomi also divides her time between being a curator and a stylist. Her artwork can be found at Ghostbird + Swoon in Sanur. TO THE SKY Walking into the lobby I was instantly captivated by the thick Javanese touches in the interior design. There is a monumental floating batik decoration on one of the walls depicting Javanese wayang characters. This artwork is really unique as it is 50 meters long, starting from the back of the reception desk and stretching all the way to other end of the lobby. “Miss, this way please,” one of the staff said, to take me back to reality. WOODEN HOUSE The Portibi Farms sits on 14-hectares of land close to the foot of Mount Salak. They have a number of lodges for guests to stay in at the Ekologika Lodges, making the area look like a private compound. I stayed at the Imah Guru Lodge where the magnificent view of two other mountains, Mount Gede and Mount Pangrango, greeted me in the morning. CHRISTMAS IN TOWN It was indeed a special Christmas celebration at the Hotel Borobudur Jakarta, as the hotel was blending Christmas touches with local culture throughout their decorations, dominated by turquoise and purple. But that wasn’t the only highlight. Celebrating last year’s festive season, Hotel Borobudur Jakarta appointed Indy Barends, one of Indonesia’s top TV presenters and radio DJs to be their icon for their Signature Christmas Log. The hotel’s pastry team created a vintage radio-shaped cake with a headset and a microphone that well represented Indy Barend’s career – this cake consisted of chocolate sponge, chocolate mousse, berry compote and sable cracker, and was for sale for Rp. 648,000 nett. Aside from the Indy Barend’s Signature Christmas Log, the hotel’s pastry team also created a giant Dutch Windmill Gingerbread House that made Christmas at Hotel Borobudur Jakarta even merrier. THE ART OF CHARCOAL
ALL COURTESY PHOTOS
On January 21, bring your children to CushCush Gallery and let them practice their creativity by joining in the third session of the “Charcoal for Children” workshop. Organized by CushCush Gallery, this workshop is a part of the gallery’s LagiLagi program and is a continuation of the previous “Make Your Own Charcoal” class. However, as the last workshop invited children to recycle off-cuts into daily utensils like spoons and forks, this time the CushCush Gallery will share how to turn twigs or off-cut timbers into drawing charcoal. Children will be able to draw and paint using charcoal as well as learn new techniques and make collaborative artwork with some invited artists. This workshop also aims to increase children’s awareness of the environment and raise some funds for LagiLagi’s future projects. The CushCush Gallery will also display all the artwork made during this workshop including the ones created during the first and second sessions of “Charcoal for Children” that were held in September and October of 2016. Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
