TEAMTALK

DAZZLING 18 ‘Om Swastiastu...’

It feels like it was only yesterday when our team did a photoshoot to celebrate our 17th anniversary, and now another year has passed by and our beloved Bali & Beyond magazine has officially turned 18! We know that age is just a number, but to be 18 means to be young, energetic and full of life – and that’s the spirit we think everyone need to have, no matter what stage of life you’re in right now. To live up to this spirit, we have compiled a number of special stories just for you. How about touring the island in 18 days? And no, we’re not only talking about the popular areas like Kuta, Seminyak and Ubud but also the east, west, and north of Bali like Karangasem,

Menjangan and Singaraja respectively. Flip through ‘Lifestyle & Leisure’ to find out about the places you should visit as you tour around the island. You can also go hiking on Mount Batur and enjoy the view of the sunrise from the top like our contributor Gino Andreas shares in ‘Action & Attraction.’ And especially for the ladies, we have everything you need to get a stunning look. Our ‘Invite & Indulge’ will take you on a beauty journey to three different places to get a massage and get your nails and hair done. And if you need some fashion inspiration, flip through ‘Fashion Folio’ to see the latest trends on the island and how you can mix and match them. And speaking about trends, the newly opened Katamama in Seminyak is perfect for those who are looking for a hotel with current yet unique architecture and interior design as well as high-quality service – read all about it in ‘Rest & Relaxation.’ Now, before you flip through our pages, we would like to send our gratitude to you, our loyal readers, as there wouldn’t be an 18th anniversary without your support. So raise a glass with us, and… Cheers!

‘Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om…’ The Team

DAYS IN BALI

ON OUR 18TH ANNIVERSARY, WE ARE EAGER TO SPILL THE REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD SPEND (AT LEAST) 18 DAYS ON THE ISLAND OF GODS. WHERE TO GO AND WHAT TO DO, YOU MIGHT WONDER? WE HAVE THE ANSWERS RIGHT HERE! By Suhartina Sindukusumo

DAY 3

DAY 1

Go straight to Jalan Raya Seminyak, which is only a 20-minute drive from the Ngurah Rai International Airport to get a sense of what the island has in store. There you will find notable eateries including EatWell that offers the ultimate crispy pork belly that has become the talk of the island. After that, get over your jetlag by staying at the Pullman Bali Legian Nirwana. Located in front of Kuta Beach, this hotel offers a taste of tropical minimalist design and five-star hospitality service with a rooftop bar that hosts a daily pool party at 5 p.m. www.pullmanbalilegiannirwana.com

DAY 2

Now let’s leave Kuta and head to Batu Belig Beach, where 707 Beach Berm with a thatched-roof bar and colorful beanbags is nestled. Here you can enjoy a lovely sunset while drinking Bintang, the leading beer of Indonesia, and enjoy music by local DJs that will set your beach mode on. But before heading to this dog-friendly place, have a taste of Balinese nasi campur (mix rice) at Biku. Situated on Jalan Petitenget, this restaurant is decorated with a Balinese interior design, and serves Indonesian comfort foods. The place is perfect to chill and read – and don’t forget that their high tea is one of the most wanted on the island. www.bikubali.com

Before you kick off your flip-flops to surf and swim at Kuta Beach, drop by the Balcony Restaurant owned by world-class professional surfer Rizal Tandjung. This bar is one of the famous go-to bars for surfers in Kuta, including previous world champion’s Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning! And if you want to check out the ‘old-school vibe’ of Bali, pay a visit to Poppies Lane, where classic restaurants and bars have been standing since the ‘70s. One of the restaurants you have to try is Poppies Restaurant, where wooden dining tables and rattan chairs are set surrounded by green plants. Here you can also meet Mbok (a Balinese term for older woman) who will not only serve you the rijstaffel and arak madu, but also tell you a lot about Kuta and its surroundings. www.thebalconybali.com www.poppiesbali.com

BALI&BEYOND JULY 2016

DAY 6

DAY 4

Head west to the Tanah Lot Temple in Tabanan that stands on a big rock formation. An old belief says that this Hindu temple is guarded by a venomous snake under the rocks that is believed to protect the island from evil. After visiting Tanah Lot, go a bit farther to the Alila Villas Soori and stay at their Mountain Pool Villa, or at least experience the Alila Spa where organic nutrition plays the main role in their Asian healing techniques. Their spa has also won Destination Spa of the Year by Asia Spa Award in 2010. www.tanahlot.net www.alilavillassoori.com

From Batu Belig or Petitenget, you can reach Canggu in around 20 to 30 minutes on a scooter. Canggu is worth a visit for its healthy restaurants like Nalu Bowls, Betelnut Café and KOI where you can find the trending Kombucha and smoothie bowl. There are three beaches in Canggu you can visit; Batu Bolong, Berawa and Echo Beach – the latter is home to Sand Bar where a beach party is hosted from 12 a.m. to 4 a.m. Before heading to Sand Bar, make sure you drop by Batu Bolong’s famous Old Man’s, a laidback bar situated in front of Batu Bolong Beach that adopts Thailand-style beer pong, a Jamaican sound party, and a car photo box occasionally. www.nalubowls.com

DAY 7

DAY 5

Still in Canggu, you’re going to wake up to a rice field view if you stay at the Askara Canggu Villas. Similar to Ubud, Canggu boasts breathtaking greenery. And before continuing your adventure in Canggu, make sure to fuel up at Roti Canai Flow & Yonder, which serves some light dishes consisting of Western-style roti canai with bacon, mushrooms and cream cheese. Then head to The Lawn, an open garden located at the Batu Bolong beachfront, and get their fresh coconut drink and popcorn for a snack while waiting for the sunset. www.askaracangguvillas.com

BALI&BEYOND JULY 2016

27

Start early to get back on the road and witness makepung, a buffalo race that has become a tradition in the Jembrana Regency. This tradition is often held as a major Gran Prix, and the participants are hundreds of buffalos with local citizens as their jockeys. If you’re lucky, you may be able to witness the Jembrana Regent’s Cup or Governor’s Cup that are held annually. Otherwise, you can still see the races while they are competing in seven circuits including the Sangyang Cerik Circuit in Tuwed Village, Melaya District.

DAY 8

Dawn at Bali Tower Restaurant at The Menjangan.

After watching makepung, have some downtime at Menjangan Island. As a part of the West Bali National Park, Menjangan Island is home to several high-end resorts, one of them The Menjangan. This retreat is not only offers idyllic accommodations but also a number of exciting activities, be it on land or in the sea. You can watch the endangered birds, go trekking or horseback riding around the national park, as well as kayak through the mangrove maze and snorkel and dive in the seven world-class dive sites. www.themenjangan.com

After two days of spending time swimming in the ocean, recharge your batteries by visiting Singaraja, the former capital city of Bali that is still full of old charm. Lots of Dutch and Chinese heritage sites are there, from synagogues to harbor and food stalls, all very interesting to see. Don’t forget to stop by Siobak Khe Lok at Jalan Surapati No. 66 to get a taste of Singaraja’s signature dish and visit the Lontar Museum at Jalan Veteran No. 20 where palm leaf manuscripts from Indonesia’s pre- and postIndependence era are stored.

Not far from the West Bali National Park is Pemuteran, a laid-back fishing village where you can spot around 60 Biorock coral-structure installations in the Pemuteran Bay. What makes this so amazing is the fact that the 300-meter length of the total biorock structure is one of the largest biorock projects in the world. Drop by and put on your dive suit to witness it up close with your own eyes. There are several dive operators that can help you to see it, or you can simply go to the Pemuteran Biorock Information Center at the bay. www.biorockbali.webs.com

DAY 11

DAY 12

Now let’s head to Batur and make our way to the Trunyan Village, a Bali Aga village where the descendants of Hindu Majapahit live – they are also believed to be the original Balinese people. This village is situated at the edge of Lake Batur, so you need to cross the lake with a traditional boat to get there. Here you will also find the Trunyan cemetery, where dead bodies are not buried nor burned but are wrapped in white fabric with their heads still exposed and placed in a bamboo cage. You can also learn about the village’s culture and traditions, like why they restrict women from going to the burial ceremony.

While still in the highlands, it is time to learn about Balinese coffee in Kintamani, an area famous for its coffee plantations and agro-tourism that focuses on local coffee. The Luwak Civet Coffee Farm in Desa Sekardadi is one of the stars in this area. Upon arrival you will be greeted by the staff that offers samples of Balinese coffee and tea, and for a small cost you can taste a cup of kopi luwak (civet coffee). Here you can also see the coffee farm and meet the civets (luwak) – civets only select the best coffee beans, and the beans they have digested somehow have more characteristics that makes civet coffee the most valuable coffee in the world. While you’re here, get ready to fall for the pungent aroma of the freshly-roasted coffee and buy packs of coffee sold at their shop.

DAY10

DAY 9

DAY 13

Had enough fun on the highlands? Visit the Karangasem regency before you head back down South. This region is home to the picturesque restaurant Bali Asli. The owner spent years learning and perfecting her cooking skills to make the best Balinese food on the island – the traditional festive food called Megibung is the highlight that you should try. Do come around 5 to 5.30 p.m., which is the best time to enjoy the majestic view of Mount Agung or early in the morning as the restaurant offers a cooking class that teaches you all about authentic Balinese food. www.baliasli.com.au

DAY 16

When you arrive in South Bali already, you should visit the Sanur area, which used to be the most popular spot for tourists and expats on its heyday. This area is filled with beachfront cafes and charming hotels that have existed for ages. Sanur has been known as the place where the retired reside, but now Sanur is becoming more popular among the young and creative crowd. The Rumah Sanur Creative Hub is the place where indie gigs, coffee enthusiasts, and activists from different backgrounds and scenes gather in Sanur and make the area more alive with its events that support local communities. www.rumahsanur.com

DAY 17

DAY 14

Before going back to South Bali, visit the newly opened Secret Garden Village in Baturiti. The Secret Garden Village is a compound that consists of a beauty heritage museum, a beauty factory and a factory outlet made by Herborist beauty products. The minimalist-modern design will be a nice change after visiting many places with Balinese architecture. From Baturiti, follow the path down to Ubud and you will eventually find the Tirta Empul Temple in Gianyar, where you can observe a local ceremony called Melukat, a purification ceremony – you can join it also, to clear your mind, body and soul. www.secretgarden.co.id

Start your morning by experiencing water sport activities at Tanjung Benoa. A number of water sport attractions are available for you to choose from, such as flyboarding, parasailing, banana boat, scuba diving, flying fish, and more. If you want to try all of them, simply make a booking on Tanjung Benoa Watersport’s website, a water sport provider that you can rely on. Then recharge your energy by viewing a flawless sunset from Single Fin a bar located at the top of Suluban Beach in Uluwatu. Aside from groovy cocktails, they also have the best spot in Uluwatu for you to see a remarkable sunset. www.tanjungbenoa.com

DAY 15

Halfway down from the highlands, you should spend a night or two in Ubud where wallpaper screen-like rice fields will pamper your eyes. You can enjoy the view of scenic rice terraces and the subak (Balinese traditional irrigation system) in Tegalalang District and watch traditional dance performances in several temples. The temples in Ubud host Balinese dance performances once to three times a week, but one of the most magical (and the oldest) is the one in Puri Agung Peliatan. For the admission fee of Rp. 100,000, you can watch the two-hour Balinese traditional dance every Saturday. Watch during a full moon as it adds more of a magical vibe to the performance.

BALI&BEYOND JULY 2016

DAY 18

Your last day should end with a snooze at a beach club. Head to the Sundara Beach Club at the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay in Jimbaran, a must-visit beach club with a 57-meter infinity edge pool that offers a great selection of cocktails and dishes as well as delightful Sunday brunch. You can get a special package too while waiting for your night flight. So, are you ready to watch your last sunset in Bali? www.sundarabali.com

tourists were coming to the island. These festivals successfully made local bands like Navicula, Superman Is Dead, and others gain listeners and fans. But now it is not too hard to be heard as Youtube, Myspace, Soundcloud, Facebook and other social media can easily help indie bands gain fans. Yes, music is improving each year with technology, but the significant change is in the media we use to attract listeners.

BB: What is Navicula’s inspiration? N: We find inspiration in daily life, and that’s why our lyrics are about daily problems and activities. But our root is grunge, so our biggest influences are Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and other bands from the same genre. That’s why we are famously known as the ‘Green Grunge Gentlemen’ because we play grunge music and we care a lot about green issues in the world. But as a

BB: What are your latest songs about social activity? N: Our song and video titled ‘Saat Semua Semakin Cepat, Bali Berani Berhenti’ is about Nyepi in Bali. When the world seems to be revolving faster each day, Bali takes a day to slow down and even our economic activity is put to rest for 24 hours. We launched it a few days before this year’s Nyepi. And in April we published our ‘Kartini’ song and video to support female farmers in Central Java whose fields are about to be seized by a cement factory. BB: After 20 years of making music, do you think Navicula has contributed enough to Bali? N: To judge ourselves is quite difficult. But we think Navicula’s achievement has contributed a lot to the creative industry in Bali. By playing some gigs around Europe, Australia, Canada, Asia, and also recording in the USA, we believe we have brought Bali and Indonesia to the world. We are also proud to have won the ‘International Rock Competition’ against about 500 other rock bands from all over the world, and because of that we got to record our album in the legendary Record Plant Studio in Hollywood. In 2007 we were appointed as the Environmental Ambassador of Bali by the local government. We also made a regular tour to support funding Yayasan Bumi Sehat, a foundation that focuses on helping mothers give birth. BB: Any new projects to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Navicula? N: We are having a celebration for sure! It’s our 20th anniversary, so we will publish a new album this year, but it is still in the making. This album is more poetic. And we have a few singles that are ready to release, but we are still waiting for the right moment. There will be a live acoustic DVD as well without any audio manipulation. So it’s original Navicula without any touch-up. By Suhartina Sindukusumo

Crowned Diageo Reserve World Class Bartender of the Year in 2014, Charles Joly (CJ) has brought the cocktail world up to another level. This Chicago-based bartender came to Bali for a sunset cocktail session at Ku De Ta and snuck a little time to chat with Bali & Beyond (BB). BB: What made you decide to become a professional bartender? CJ: It was when I realized that I had the opportunity to combine two sides of my persona: the operations side, which includes developing, building and running bars and restaurants, and my creativity in hospitality and the freeform style of creating cocktails. BB: Describe your life as one of the best bartenders in the world in three words. CJ: Always chasing emails. BB: What’s your ultimate comfort drink? CJ: Old rum on ice. BB: What’s the most difficult drink you’ve ever made? CJ: Making cocktails for a guest that had lost their sense of smell. You have to get very creative in order to make a drink that is still appealing to this altered sense of taste. BB: Any exciting projects coming up? CJ: I’m continuing to expand my line of Crafthouse Cocktails throughout the USA. You can see what we do at Crafthouse Cocktails’ website. I also have a full array of bar tools and glassware that I design with a wonderful USA firm called Fortessa in conjunction with Schott Zwiesel glassware. ACTION&ATTRACTION

TOP OF THE WORLD FALL IN LOVE ALL OVER AGAIN WITH THE MAJESTIC MOUNT BATUR…

T

he first time I met her was back in 1995. It was 2 a.m. and everything was still pitch black. She was gracious and majestic with

only a few rough parts when I got lost and some locals brought me back to the right track. Her name is Mount Batur and she’s the second highest volcano in Bali after the great Mount Agung. But then five years after my first hike she erupted, spewing hot lava and sand ashes but fortunately not causing any casualties. Maybe she wanted to blow off some steam, who knows? Maybe. The second time I paid her a visit was the same week we as our planet celebrated the so-called “Earth Day” this year. She was standing as proud as before at 1,777 meters above the sea level in the Kintamani Regency, part of the Bangli area. The ground under her feet got denser, but the lush greenery makes her even prettier. Mount Batur is home to 15 villages, with Songan, Kedisan, Toya Bungkah and Trunyan as the main ones. My mission that day was the so-called “pre-dawn trek” arranged by Bali Eco Cycling. I arrived at The Lookout Restaurant that is located on the side of Lake Batur at 3 a.m. to join seven other trekkers and enjoy a hot beverage and some fruit for my early breakfast. The temperature was around 19o Celsius, but the hot tea

and black Bali coffee warmed us up and boosted our energy for hiking up the mountain.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR HIKING MOUNT BATUR: • Wear a quick drying shirt so the sweat from hiking will easily evaporate while watching the sunrise. • Bring a light windbreaker. The chilly temperature can sometimes be a bit serious. • Make sure you have enough rest prior to your trek. • Wear proper shoes with non-slip soles. • Before hiking, don’t drink too much water; otherwise your kidneys will hurt. • Bring a walking stick if possible. • Be careful descending the mountain as some paths can be slippery. Try to sidestep to increase your grip and reduce the risk of stumbling.

One of the most anticipated festivals on the island is back! The Ubud Village Jazz Festival is going to rock the town once again in its fourth year of running this August 12 and 13. Held at the ARMA Museum with the theme “Embracing Uniqueness and Tolerance”, the Ubud Village Jazz Festival 2016 expects a great number of international and national musicians to come and perform live on three different stages – among the stars are the LOUIS! Project from Holland, the Youn Woo Park Trio from Korea, the Yuko Shirota quartet from Japan and world-class bass player Reuben Rogers from the USA. The Indonesian legendary jazz musicians who will perform at the festival are Margie Segers, Oele Pattiselano and Jeffrey Tahalele, along with other local talent like Mia Samira and Salamander Big Band. The Ubud Village Jazz Festival will also treat the guests to a wonderful culinary experience by hosting a number of food stalls and a one-hour free flow wine session by Plaga Wine. And for the third time in a row the festival is collaborating with the Bali Jazz Summer School to help promote jazz in Indonesia by hosting music classes prior to the festival. Log on to www. balijazzsummerschool.com to join the class or click on the following website for more details. www.ubudvillagejazzfestival.com

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
