Rai Wibawa, also known as Sangtu, the retreat’s co-founder and cultural liaison, this activity takes guests closer to Balinese culture over a cup of herbal tea at the retreat’s main living room. The Tea Circle is hosted every Thursday after dusk. The sun was slowly setting on the horizon when I joined the class and other guests slowly gathered in a circle, each of their hands held a warm jug of herbal tea made of homegrown herbs from the retreat’s permaculture compound. As a silent retreat, this is the only time where guests can talk, share and ask questions on Balinese culture.

item that visitors would easily associate with Bali. This daily offering can be seen everywhere; in a temple, on the street, on the beach or on the top of a cashier counter in a shop. The woven-tray is usually filled with multi-colored flowers and topped with an incense stick. Some even add specific elements; a bakery would put some crumbles of bread while owners of warung nasi campur (food joints) put a lump of rice and chicken as a part of their offering. Holding a canang in one of his hands, Sangtu explained the meaning of canang sari. Originated from Sanskrit, the word “canang” actually consists of two words; “ca” means beautiful and “nang” means

Originated from two words – “Rwa” means two and “Bhineda” means different – Kain Poleng signifies the duality contained in an object. The Balinese believe that everything that exists in this world, both the microcosmic or macrocosmic world, has two contrasting forces that need to be equally respected, like day and night, and sadness and happiness. This concept also means that the world revolves around Skala (the The Balinese black and white checkered fabrics are also used for a traditional dance performance.

affects our health and fitness. And when it comes to fitness, there’s no substitute. The only way to get fit is to actually do some exercises. But how many people look forward to a workout? The good news is the fitness industry has now evolved too with the birth of so many new training disciplines all around the world, including in Bali. Some of them are more popular than others due to communities that become a big aspect in the fitness industry today. Over the years, more playful and fun-oriented training such as Bootcamp, Crossfit and Parkour have quickly taken over the dynamic of the fitness world. People are now becoming less dependent on exercise machines or equipment, while functional training classes are dominating and more people are now embracing outdoor training.

intense focus and awareness of their surroundings. He formed a training that stimulates both our body and brain to help us develop creativity in overcoming obstacles, have awareness of the environment, and improve our fitness elements of strength, endurance, mobility, agility and balance – the combination of all of these aspects will eventually help us gain confidence. According to Tah Riq, the SHF is intended to be a center of transformation. Tah Riq found so many analogies to life challenges in physical form. For instance, hanging on a wall represents perseverance in life. Knowing when to hold on and when to let go while swinging between bars is like maintaining relationships. Learning to go upside down and land on your feet in a flip is the same as being disoriented by life. “The purpose of training at SHF is to help you overcome your mental blocks by interacting with the specially designed physical obstacles,” said Tah Riq. This kind of exercise is all about blending in with our surroundings and being one with it. A holistic method of training that involves not only crazy maneuvers but also a sense of knowing ourselves and our environment better. Fitness is of course a happy side effect! Finding no urban terrain on the island, Tah Riq thought it would be great to build an urban style obstacle gym in the middle of the rice fields and jungle. Standing on 300 square meters of land, SHF features a fivemeter rock climbing wall known as the “Leap of Faith” to reminisce Tah

my dives in Lembeh, there was little current or almost none. The dive site has healthy surroundings that allow critters to exist in more than a fair number. So, as you dive deeper into the ocean, prepare yourself for a real chance to encounter some of the rarest critters in the world which may not normally be seen elsewhere. Rare crustaceas, unique molluscs and colourful shrimps such as Boxer Crabs, Tiger Shrimps, and Blue Ring Octopus will greet divers in the deep. Lembeh waters are also home to rare bottom dwellers such as hairy frogfishes – if you’re lucky, you can capture a photo of the elusive Black Hairy Frogfish. Families of nudibranchs also swim freely around the Lembeh site, with the uniquelyshaped Melibe Colemani being one Diving in Lembeh is not only a normal dive trip where you can just

HEALTH&MEDICAL Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
