TEAMTALK
BEAUTIFUL INDONESIA ‘Om Swastiastu...’ Indonesia with its thousands of islands, intriguing rites and rituals, and nuances in language and culture never fails to provide us with things to marvel at and write about. We decided to dedicate this issue to exposing the richness of Indonesian culture, as there are so many things specific to this country and so much to explore! Some people travel to Indonesia to study the culture while others are drawn here by their fascination with the traditional arts and crafts. Turn to LIFESTYLE & LEISURE to read about our trip to Klungkung to learn about ikat fabrics with a visiting designer from New York City. You can also turn to CAPITAL CORNER to read about Indonesian designers who have been successfully transforming batik and ikat fabrics into sensational modern pieces. Also included in this issue are articles about beautiful properties that have been part of Bali’s tourism industry for decades, promoting the best of what this country has to offer from the very beginning. We also cover a new restaurant offering tasty local cuisine and jamu class, where guests can learn how to make some of Indonesia’s favorite herbal remedies. There is obviously so much that can be discussed when it comes to Indonesia’s heritage, which makes us really proud of the diversity and uniqueness! We hope this issue helps to reignite the fire you have in your hearts for this beautiful archipelago, as it has done for us.

Ketut Suar, the village administrative head of Desa Subaya, explained that only village leaders or elders who have been purified and are sitting at the Bale Pesamuan hall are allowed to perform this dance. Next was the Baris Truna dance performed by young unmarried village men in simple costumes. Rejang Adat was presented by village maidens and then Baris Gede, which features spears and intricate costumes, was performed by village adults. There were also several other types of Baris dances presented at the ceremony including Baris Jojor, which resembles the Baris Gede dance but with the spears only carried on shoulders, attributed to battles of the past. that we were in yoga-loving Ubud and next door to the Yoga Barn. The next dish to come out was the nasi bungkus, beautifully wrapped in its trademark banana leaf. Help from the waiter was enlisted to unwrap the gift with minimal disturbance to its surrounds. Such surrounds included chicken satay, chilli egg, fish sambal matah, tofu and tempeh, crackers and more chili. The variety served as a brilliant introduction to traditional Indonesian ingredients and the combination of flavors and spices were ‘foreigner friendly’ too, making the introduction to local cuisine a very smooth and tasty one. Of course there was the option of adding in extra heat if desired, with the extra chilli on the side. The banana leaf performed its role elegantly, maintaining the moistness and freshness of the rice and allowing the flavors in the ‘lauk’

The pisang goreng, a childhood favorite, was different from the usual battered variety. Their preparation gave the banana fritters a delicate appearance, and the generous sprinkles of cinnamon rather than sugar were also welcomed. The bubur injin (black rice pudding) was akin to Japanese red bean sweets, with a depth of sweetness that really satisfies. Judging by the expressions

MANEKINEKO How about shopping in a place that looks less like a store and more like a chic and comfortable lounge? That’s the idea behind Manekineko, located at the Epicentrum Walk Mall in Kuningan. Their concept is to be a creative community hub by exposing people to an inspiring environment. Manekineko is a collection of select local brands that are on the rise and offers various lifestyle products from clothing to accessories, to cameras, toys, and more. Manekineko carries brands such as Satcas/Sash, Damn I love Indonesia, Sixteen D’Scale, MYE, TickTock, Tosavica, Label Ink, Lilou, Plastic Culture, Retail Theraphy, Utee et Poubelle, Bierkko, and Toko Polaroid. At Manekineko, they are challenged to continually produce and create new and unique items every three months. This makes Manekineko not only a place for shopping but also a place to ignite and inspire young people to create things. Manekineko is equipped with cozy seating areas spread throughout the place. Meals and drinks are provided by the The Empress Room, the store’s café. It is a nice atmosphere to shop, relax, and enjoy a couple of drinks and food with friends and colleagues. What makes it even nicer is the corner devoted to an organic environment, designed with the

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
