TEAMTALK
MY DREAM WEDDING ‘Om Swastiastu...’ It is no secret that a lot of couples from around the world come to Bali to tie the knot, making Bali one of the top destinations for weddings and romantic getaways. From the beaches to clifftops overlooking the ocean to hilly areas with a view of rice fields, Bali is never short of wedding venues. The wedding industry on this island also keeps on expanding with the birth of so many new talents such as makeup artists, wedding organizers, wedding planners and more. If you’re planning to get married in Bali you are holding the right magazine in your hands, as we have compiled stories to inspire you for your wedding day. Looking for the

right venue with a remarkable view? Flip through our ‘Foto Folio’ story that boasts eight wedding photos from eight different hotels in Bali. Our ‘Lifestyle & Leisure’ can also be a part of your bridal book as it consists of a list of wedding vendors including bridal gowns, florists and caterers. When the celebration is over, it is only right that you and your better half stay on the island for your honeymoon. Cruising Jimbaran Bay with the Belmond Jimbaran Puri is surely a remarkable experience for two – find out all about it in our ‘Little Loves’. Another option is to get pampered at the Tree Spa by L’Occitane at Kupu Kupu Barong Villas with an anti-aging treatment that we reveal in ‘Invite & Indulge.’ We know how overwhelming planning a wedding can be, so we hope we can help prevent you from becoming a bridezilla. After all, we believe every couple deserves to have their dream wedding come true, especially when they have this paradise island to witness their vows. ‘Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om…’ The Team ERRATA: The photos of The Shanti Foundation on ‘See & Seen’ in our August 2016 issue belonged to Kelas Inspirasi. The Shanti Foundation’s photos are published on our Facebook page.

WITNESSING A GRAND CELEBRATION AS BALINESE LOVEBIRDS FROM TWO ROYAL FAMILIES BECOME HUSBAND AND WIFE…

Beyond my expectations, it has become the first curated Instagram account for all things wedding in Indonesia with more than 250,000 followers. BB: Why did you leave your former job in corporate banking and become Bridestory’s Country Director for Indonesia? AR: Banking was my first job and I was in love with that industry for quite some time. But there was always a little part of me that wanted to look for opportunities in the wedding industry. Three years ago I met Kevin Mintaraga (Founder and CEO of Bridestory) and Natassya Saputra (Wedding Connector - Flying Bride), who wanted to build a wedding platform that would help brides-to-be make their dream wedding possible. Fast forward, and here I am now. BB: What’s in the future for Bridestory? AR: We are focusing on expansion in several countries around Asia. Currently we have a ground office and local teams in Singapore, the Philippines, and Malaysia. Our goal is to expand and strengthen our business in key cities in the Asian-Pacific region and become the leading global wedding platform that vendors can utilize to reach broader audiences or that couples can use for their wedding. BB: Describe a dream wedding that you would like to arrange for someone, please… AR: A dream wedding for me would involve a lot of white, including the flowers in the decorations and a white dress code for all the guests. It should also be an intimate wedding where the couple is surrounded by all of their beloved family and friends. Lastly, a dream wedding should incorporate elements or details that represent the character of the couple. n By Suhartina Sindukusumo www.bridestory.com

He celebrates life by making g art installations inst and paintings. In the “Merayakan Murni” exhibition at Sudakara Art Space in Sudamala Suites and Villas Sanur that lasts until September 18, he together with his little family showcases a fruitful painting that tells loads of stories about gender. During the exhibition, Made Bayak (MB) took five minutes to chat with Bali & Beyond (BB). BB: Could you share a bit about your project “Merayakan Murni”? MB: I’ve tried to respond to the gender issue that Murni had been focusing on, especially about women. I decided to collaborate with my wife and son to make a wide, detailed, and colorful painting of ‘Rangda and his students’ that is inspired by Cok Sawitri’s novel titled ‘Janda dari Jirah’. In the novel Rangda is depicted as a wise mentor with male followers that act female and vice versa. But Rangda emphasizes that it does not matter as long as they respect people and give back to their surroundings. This philosophy is also related to my son’s behavior. Because of his long straight black hair, he is often miscalled as gek, a Balinese word for Ms. That’s why in this painting project I wanted to blend Murni’s ideology, Janda dari Jirah’s philosophy, and my opinion about gender.

BB: Where is your favorite place in Bali to see art? MB: At a ngaben ceremony. Ngaben is a Balinese funeral ceremony, and during the ritual many paintings and art installations are made part of the ritual. I always look forward to seeing the art because they often tell stories about life after death and I am always mesmerized by the artists’ imagination. BB: Define art in three words. MB: Aesthetic, political, and educative. BB: What was the latest great art you’ve seen? MB: I think the collaboration with my son is the latest great art I’ve seen. This collaboration made me see how vivid a kid’s heart is. They create art not for sale but because it makes them happy, and that makes the art become wonderful. BB: Your inspiration is…. MB: My surroundings, especially my family.

and then continued to admire the natural beauty of Labuan Bajo and to absorb its positive vibe. I could feel my energy recharging as we strolled around the town and visited a number of small-scale touristy areas. We could spend more time in Labuan Bajo and use a live-on-board to hop from one island to another, but Flores is not just about Labuan Bajo and Komodo Island. Other cities and villages were waiting for us.

DANCE ON CANVAS Noella Roos invites art enthusiasts to see beyond a dancer. At VIN+ Seminyak Bali, her paintings are displayed in an exhibition titled “Lines of Pleasure” that showcases the sensual moves of dancers and reveals their emotions. “I work with dancers and their body’s feelings and emotions in a two dimensional space,” said Noella. “It’s a combination of a person’s feelings and emptiness.” Noella worked closely with a number of female and male dancers to get the essence of their feelings, be it in love, depression or happiness before translating them into artwork. On display until September 30, this exhibition is a bridge that blends two forms of art; painting and dancing. VIN+ Seminyak Bali Jalan Kayu Jati No. 1, Seminyak (0361) 473-2377 www.vingroup.biz

Located in Denpasar, CushCush Gallery displays a series of vessel artworks made in a collaboration between CushCush and Ross McLeod, a Melbourne-based educator and designer, in an exhibition titled “crucible”. Starting from a series of watercolor and oil pastel sketches, these artworks were translated into off-size hand drawings. Ross then gave the final designs to CushCush’s skilled wood craftsmen to bring his ideas to life using sustainably sourced Suar wood that is already stacked in the gallery. Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
