DINE IN BALI AGA A unique dining experience is waiting for you in East Bali, as Alila Manggis offers “Village Dining with the Bali Aga.” The culinary team of Alila Manggis has created a special dining experience that takes place in the house of Pak Gede, one of the villagers in the heart of Tenganan Village, an ancient area from the pre-Hindu era. Pak Gede is believed to be one of the descendants of the native Balinese that have occupied the island since before the Hindu-Javanese from the Majapahit kingdom arrived on the island. This dining experience will please your palate with homemade Balinese dishes, from soup to five family-style dishes and dessert. In addition, a private butler and Balinese music will accompany you. This culinary experience is even more special as you can admire Pak Gede’s artwork, such as woodcarvings and Sanskrit writing on palm leaves, special skills that he inherited from his ancestors. The “Village Dining with the Bali Aga” is available only for one couple or one family per day. Alila Manggis Desa Buitan, Manggis, Karangasem, (0363) 410-11 www.alilahotels.com/manggis

The next morning, I put the sarong back on, only this time it was paired with a kebaya that the hotel lent me. At 9 a.m., Mr. Arsana picked me up at the hotel’s lobby to take me back to the Dalem Suargan Temple. Just like the day before, the people of the Kedewatan Village had gathered at the temple to pray. Once again I witnessed how the Balinese prayed in unison, all wearing the white clothes that made them look the same in front of their God. Then as the gamelan music was playing again – it was time to march the Barong, Rangda and other God’s manifestations one more time, this time to the Meraja Pati Temple, which was around 500 meters south. Mac & Cheese from the Pasta list is also a star of the house. This dish is not just perfect for cheese lovers with matured Cheddar, American Cheddar, Grana Padano and Mozzarella, but it also elevates the traditional Mac & Cheese with truffle oil that gives it a bold flavor. Sprinkles of bone marrow and bacon crumble on top also adds a sensational crunch to this dish. And as if that’s not enough, you can opt to add butter poached Jimbaran bamboo lobster – an exquisite Mac & Cheese done right, I must say! Celebrating its first anniversary, Alila Solo hosted a special dinner titled “Taste of Sulawesi”. Held at the Presidential Suite that boasts the skyline of Solo, the dinner took Sulawesi flavors to the fine dining scene courtesy of Chef Petty Elliott, the hotel’s Guest Chef in Residence. Among the dishes presented that night were Ikan Gohu from North Sulawesi as the appetizer, and Soto Makassar and Es Pallu Butung from South Sulawesi for the third and final courses respectively. The dinner was made even more special as each dish was paired beautifully with fine wine, including Matua Sauvignon Blanc from Australia and Bottega Amore Moscato from Italy. The touch of Sulawesi was even more authentic as the dinner was accompanied by the sounds of traditional Sulawesi musical instruments, performed live by a trio of musicians. CLEAN THE CITY It was a Sunday to remember as 20,000 people in Jakarta from all works of life gathered to join in the fourth “Clean Up Jakarta Day”. Hand in hand they worked closely with the Dinas Kebersihan DKI (Jakarta’s Sanitation Department) to help clean 53 different spots in the capital city including two areas in Tangerang. These volunteers, who were labeled “Clean Up Heroes,” managed to collect 80,000 kilograms of waste from the streets and gutters and delivered 30,000 kilograms to Bank Sampah (The Waste Bank) for recycling. This movement is also taken root in other areas of Indonesia, including Bandung in West Java and Bali. www.cleanupjakartaday.org

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
