Jack frost has shrunken our balls again - sorry only 16 pages of sport this week! Ballsmania has proudly teamed up with Nottingham Greyhound Stadium to offer sporting clubs in Nottinghamshire the chance to raise some much needed money for their club by announcing the inaugural Ballsmania Cup. The Ballsmania Cup heats will take place at Nottingham Greyhound Stadium on the evenings of Friday 3rd April, Friday 17th April, Friday 8th May, Friday 29th May, Friday 5th June and Friday 19th June. Six clubs will be required for each night thus a total of thirty six clubs can compete for the honour of being crowned the inaugural Ballsmania Cup champion. How will it work? Nottingham Greyhound Stadium will supply each club with 100 tickets free of charge for the relevant Ballsmania Cup heats night – clubs can then sell these tickets (normal price is £6 per person) to their club members, families and friends with all the proceeds being retained by the club. What happens on the night? Each club will be allocated a trap number [1 – 6] and the club will be represented by this trap number for each of the six Ballsmania Cup races – the position the dog finishes in each Ballsmania race scores points on a league table basis (7 points for 1st place, 5 points for 2nd place and so on down to 1 point for 6th place). The clubs with the highest points total on the six evenings will be invited back on Friday 17th July to compete in the final of the Ballsmania Cup. The overall winner will be crowned the Ballsmania Cup

champion and will receive a trophy along with a prize for the club. Adam Small of Ballsmania says “This is a fantastic way for clubs to raise money and have great fun at the same time. I've been down to the dogs several times and always had a cracking night out so I'm delighted Ballsmania are able to provide clubs in Nottinghamshire with this great opportunity.” Nathan Corden of Nottingham Greyhound Stadium says “We are delighted to team up with Ballsmania to offer the clubs a chance to raise much needed funds. We are donating tickets worth in excess of £25,000 to sporting clubs in the Nottinghamshire area and we hope they embrace this opportunity and raise the funds to maybe buy a new kit or secure their venue.” The competition is open to all sporting clubs, from Skittles teams to Tag Team Wrestling - all you need to do register is visit www.ballsmania.net or contact Nathan Corden at Nottingham Greyhound Stadium on 0115 910 3333 to sign-up. Nottingham Greyhound Stadium is open for live racing every Monday, Friday and Saturday night all year around. A recent £750,000 re-development of the track view restaurant has turned the Colwick Park venue into one of Nottingham's premier nights out and throughout January and February the greyhound stadium will be offering a 25% discount on their restaurant packages – for further details go to www.nottinghamdogs.com or call 0115 910 3333.

Charlton 0 Nottingham Forest 2 Attendance: 24,553 If Billy Davies found his brow somewhat furrowed at Forest's league position after the City triumph, he probably had the mystery solved by the end of this afternoon. The fiery Scot snatched three desperately needed points from the league's bottom club, but Charlton will be inclined to call it a daylight robbery. For much of the first half Forest created as close to possible as nothing, while the hosts were afforded the time and space to plot endless routes in behind an industrious but flappable defence. Tyson's goal arrived without warning, and seemingly seconds later Earnshaw's cool lob doubled the advantage. The away supporters, a mass of

Visit www.ltlf.co.uk for the latest news, comment and humour about the Reds, plus the liveliest Forest forum on the web. severe glares and wrinkled foreheads, celebrated in disbelief. A popular question at half-time was 'just how have we managed that?' After half-time the frost descended and the pitch hardened, but Charlton showed no mercy in their search for a lifeline. Breckin's automated clearance mechanism laid on a banquet of corners, but a combination of Paul Smith's gloves and a series of reckless, sprawling blocks kept the score in Forest's favour. As the home side ventured optimistically forward, there was a mischievous yearning for Paul Anderson's pace or Robert Earnshaw's guile to settle matters with a third. Indeed Anderson should have scored midway through the half – but his downward volley struck the corner flag! With a reluctant sense of inevitability, Charlton heads dropped and their supporters – no doubt already planning their trips to Stockport et al – flocked to the exits. Not even the incentive of a bizarre five minutes of stoppage time could raise spirits in what simply wasn't their day. It was a tough afternoon for Billy Davies, who will be under no illusions about the challenges that lie ahead. It was a direct, dogged, generally quite unpleasant display. But it was a winning display – and in Forest's plight, that will do nicely. Ratings: Smith – 8 – his kicking was fairly poor, but he deserves credit for another series of exceptional saves.

High fives all round for the county boys

Chambers – 6 – recovered after an ailing start to give a determined performance. Morgan – 8.5 – a titanic display from Morgan who blocked everything. Breckin – 6 – a solid performance, but outpaced on one or two occasions. Cohen – 6 – he is wasted at left back, but his work rate and his determination on the break were enough to redeem his display. Anderson – 7 – his pace on the break and his dribbling ability are particularly useful, but he is lacking physically and often melts in the final third. McGugan – 6 – a congested game that did not suit him, despite one or two attempts to weave his way into space. Perch – 6.5 – did an important job of breaking up play in front of the defence. Thornhill – 6 – not bad at all when he had possession, but he tends to disappear for fairly long periods. Tyson – 7 – he has grown in confidence over the last few weeks and it shows in his performances. Not the time for an injury. Earnshaw – 7 – excellent finish and a hard-working display. Subs: Davies – 5.5 – struggled to get involved as Forest defended desperately. Garner – 6.5 – immediately won a free kick and kept the ball out of harm's way with some sensible movement.

Notts County started 2009 in the perfect manner this afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Exeter City at Meadow Lane. Ian McParland's men showed great character to come back from a goal down courtesy of two goals in seven minutes late in the first half from the boots of Delroy Facey and Gavin Strachan after Marcus Stewart's penalty had given Paul Tisdale's side the lead. Despite dominating the second half Notts couldn't add to their tally, with Adam Nowland and Delroy Facey both going close. In their first game for almost two weeks McParland handed recalls to Michael Johnson, Adam Nowland and Jamie Forrester from the 3-0 defeat Rotherham United while new signing Phil Picken was handed his debut at right-back. The Meadow Lane groundstaff worked their magic to get the game on despite almost all the games in League Two being called off due to the big freeze up and down the country. A minute's applause was held prior to kick-off in honour of Magpies legend Jack Wheeler who sadly passed away earlier today. Notts attacked the Haydn Green Family Stand in the first half, but it was the Grecians who created the first opportunity as Ryan Harley blasted a right-shot towards the bottom corner of Pilkington's goal but the Notts goalkeeper made a fine stop diving low to his left. Michael Johnson headed wide on fourteen minutes with Notts' first real attack from Matt Hamshaw corner after a good passage of Magpies passing. Two minutes later Notts had a glorious opportunity to take the lead after some neat link-up play between Facey and Forrester, but twelve yards out Facey's weak effort was straight at Jones in the Grecians goal. Hamshaw was getting plenty of the ball down the right and was at the hub of Notts' best moves forwards. On twenty-five minutes though the visitors were awarded a penalty - against the run of play - for an apparent trip on Stansfield by Johnson in the box, which was given by the Assistant Referee on the far side. The experienced Marcus Stewart was given the responsibility of taking the penalty-kick, and he did so with great composure by slotting the ball into Pilkington's left-hand corner as the goalkeeper dived to his right. Notts responded quickly as Hamshaw drew a stop from

Jones, and Johnson headed over from the resultant corner. The Magpies were rewarded for their efforts just after the half-hour though as Delroy Facey slotted home his fifth of the season to draw Notts onto level terms. Jamie Clapham did superbly well to cut out Tulley's clearance and provide a telling ball into the box which fell kindly to Facey, and although his initial effort was blocked he was able to latch onto the ball again and slot the ball into the far corner. The big striker made a point of running over to Manager Ian McParland to celebrate his second strike on home territory this season. Notts' tails were up and Myles Weston almost made it a dramatic turnaround but his low drive from outside the box was just off target. Pilkington made a fine save with his feet to deny Saunders at the other end, and a minute later he was powerless to get anywhere near Harley's stinging shot from thirty yards which thundered off Pilkington's left-hand post and away to safety. Exeter were made to rue that miss as five minutes before the break Notts went ahead. Myles Weston won the ball superbly down the left, advanced forwards and delivered a superb low cross that Strachan steered into the far corner for his first goal in Notts colours. The Magpies ended the first half strongly and were full value for their lead - but Strachan joy was soon to turn to despair as he had to be replaced in firsthalf injury-time with a hamstring problem. Nat Wedderburn took his place in the middle of the park twenty-four hours after joining on loan from Stoke for the second time this season. The Magpies began the second half positively and Wedderburn brought a good save from Jones with a low drive from outside the box. Notts were looking comfortable on their lead and were advancing into some dangerous attacking areas but were unable to test Jones further. Just after the hour Adam Nowland came close to opening his Notts account with a cheeky chip after Picken had done well to win the ball back down the right, but with Jones beaten his effort clipped the top of the bar and went over. Rob Edwards almost turned a Facey cross into his own net a minute later after a superb run down the right by the Notts striker, and with Notts applying all the pressure a third goal was always likely. Facey broke the offside trap with fifteen minutes to go to have a clear run on goal, but he shot straight at Jones with just the goalkeeper to beat. It was a glorious chance which would have allowed Notts to enjoy the final ten minutes or so. ExGrecian Sean Canham replaced Jamie Forrester for the final five minutes looking to net against his former employers for the second time this season. Understandably Exeter applied some late pressure, but Notts' defensive display was excellent and they were able to celebrate their first three points of the New Year.

Only the freezing weather was responsible for keeping Wollaton at the top of the NSL senior division as they lost again this week, this time to bottom club Awsworth Villa. With the scores level 1-1 at half time, Awsworth came out and took the lead second half gaining a shock two goal advantage before goals from Sharpe and Barry Turner restored the 2 Wollaton Res. deficit ten minutes from time. Former leaders; Chesterfield fell to the only goal of the game scored by Greg Whatnall for Old Colonial. Rolls Royce Leisure returned to winning ways; 3-1 at Stratford Haven, with Gareth Parkin, Andy Start and Richard Hannigan netting and Mark Scott answering. George Street are also in the mix for the championship, endorsed by a couple from Liam Hatfield in the 2-1 win at BTSC, who had Adam Chenery on the scoresheet. Carlton Catholic still struggle to make an impression and lost again by 2-0 at FC Clobber, with Joe Warner and Matt Rick on target. The top two in Division Two shared the points and four goals, as Gareth White and Richard Bishton registered for Sims Metal and Adam Brown and Damian Mann for Rolls Royce Leisure Villa. Former leaders Lenton Villa are struggling to reverse their ill fortunes and fell again by 2-0 to Cotgrave PFC, with Darren Smith and Ben Smedley scoring. Vernon Villa Sunday are having the exact opposite in fortune as they climbed to fifth following Liam Evan's solitary effort against New Fairham. Crusader heaped more problems on pointless Fat Cat with a 42 win, thanks to a couple of goals from Mark Stratford and one each from Tim Self and Neil Thompson, as Rob Stewart and Dave Pritchard retaliated. Report by John Wheat COMBINATION - HAMBURG 80 HOLD BLACKS HEAD TO A 3-3 DRAW! Hamburg 80 hovering just above the drop zone in division two pulled off the result of the day by holding runaway leaders Blacks Head to a 3 all draw. Blacks having won all their previous 12 games found themselves 1 nil down in the 20th minute when Matthew Shipman unleashed an unstoppable 30 yard free kick into the corner of their net. The score line remained that way until the 42nd minute when anything Shipman could do Mark Buckley could do and he proved it by levelling in equal fashion to send the sides in 1-1 at the break. Soon after the turnaround the leaders got their noses in front for the first time when Andy Dames was on hand to slot home from 6 yards. Some 10 minutes later the status quo was resumed when Kevin Varley volley home a drilled cross by Darryl Clayton but they couldn't hold on and Gary Williamson restored the lead for the visitors in the 82nd minute blasting in off the post from close range. Hamburg could have been rattled by this but their answer was to go straight up the other end from the restart, passed the ball to Darryl Clayton who beat two players and rifled home to earn his side a share of the spoils and put a dent in Blacks Heads record. Greyfriars dropped a place in the premier division when they went down 3-2 at Calverton MW who replace them in second spot following this win. Calverton were always in front but had to fight until the death before they could claim all three points. Andrew Smith set them on their way in the first half before Dominic Clarke mad it 2-0 at the interval. Greyfriars were not about to give in and clawed their way back to 2-2 of which one of the goals was a James Needham penalty but just before the final whistle Rob McCoy popped up to stab home a winner from close range. Troy Dunstan struck twice as Bestwood MW beat Sporting Wheelbarrow 5-1 whilst the gap between top and bottom could not be more evident as Leaders Gedling United thrashed Bottom side Gremio 16-0 with Mark Nixon top scoring with 4 goals. With A1 Glazing's game being cancelled the winners of the AFC Bridgford/Volo game had the chance of going joint top of division one and it was the home side who took advantage of that fact when they beat their visitors and third placed side Volo by 5 goals to 3. Matt Astill led the way for Bridgford with a well taken hat trick and he was assisted in the goals steaks by Dan Casey and Glen Alexander. Although Jordan Marsh and Scott Bradburn reduced the deficit it was bridgford who went joint top with a game in hand. This defeat by Volo coupled with New Ventures odd goal in 9 victory means they dropped a place in the tightly packed table. Ventures goal heroes on the day were Terry Kavanagh 2, Matthew Shaw 2 and Gary Willows. Their visitors FC Bedstead hit back through Paul Prewitt 2, Philip Goulby and Adam Woodward. M Jones, A Robinson, M Walker and J Pykett all found the target as CNC joined the pack in the hunt for honours by completing a 4-1 win over struggling DTD for whom M McConnachie replied. Medz Reds took full advantage of Blacks head surprise slip up to close the gap to 3 points at the top of Division two with a game in hand courtesy of a 4-1 win at New Inn thanks to a Jason Knowles brace and a single apiece by Danny Beardsley and Mick Grinion. Sam Bowmer replied for the home side. Joe Horan and Mick Bannister score a brace apiece for their respective sides as Pride of Erin and Rise Park shared the spoils in a 2 all draw. Chris Nelly struck 2 twice and Terry Redfern once as St George beat Munich 79 3-0. Nathan Robinson netted 3 and Adam Henson 2 as Basford Rangers won 5-1 at Wagon and Horses whilst Carl O'Rafferty went one better and struck four times in Notts United's 8 nil win at Pure Fc. The top three in Division Three all won to open up a gap between themselves and the chasing pack. Leaders Bestwood Re-United completed a comfortable 8-2 victory at Taverners to maintain their 100% record with D Stevenson coming out top marksman with 5 goals. Second placed the Mill beat La Toque 2-1 at home thanks to a right footed drive late on by Aaren Porter. Joe Luwic opened the scoring for the Mill in the first half before Gavin Webb cancelled it out for lowly La Toque who looked to be heading for a point until porters strike sealed the win. Whilst Wayne Evans hit a hat trick as The Close beat fourth placed PMR by 6 goals to 3. Report continued over page

Kinoulton Villa missed the chance to gain ground on the leaders after a 44 draw with Clifton Dynamo Mack with a hat trick for Dynamo supported by West and a brace apiece for Sala and Collinson for Villa. Pirates keeper Wooley then flyhacked Nathan Scott to conceding a sixth minute penalty converted by Scott. Within a minute Martin Bunny made it two for GMB and Pirates had the game to chase. After ten minutes Scott Worrad pulled one back and the balance all changed. Both sides competed for the next twenty minutes without either side dominating until late goals restored the initiative to GMB as Olly Gee and Dino Delfino made it a 4-1 half time lead. As per usual GMB went to sleep after the break as Pirates found another yard of space creating a goal for Sam Barker pulling it back to 4-2.Unable to narrow the gap further Pirates were shipwrecked on the break as Olly Gee completed his hat trick with a fine curling twentyfive yarder assisted by Scott's second and Simon Labbate. St Anns stay top after racking up another cricket score beating Toton Athletic 10-2. Caythorpe stay fourth after a 6-1 win over Attsu. Report by Adrian Ford

BEESTON, CHILWELL & WEST NOTTS POOL LEAGUE A bad loss from Jolly this week sees them slide down to 5th slot in division A as the Commercial took them down in a crushing 6-1 victory which planted the Commics into 3rd place. Both Victory club B and A secured good wins to place them top and second respectively. As we move into the second half of the season both Poachers and the Hoods will have to produce some special match play games to move out of the relegation zone. Despite a loss from Birchover their position still remains in the promotion zone with division B leaders Cricketers A. Pelican B have yet to win a match this season and look to see their hard faught matches from last season's division C go to waste as they face the prospect of facing the C division again for the summer. Birchover B produced a mega hiccup for the side this week after losing to division

leaders Inham Nook in a match that sees Nook, Pelican A and the Riverside all jostling for leadership with just a small leg difference separating them. Next weeks turnaround point sees Birchover B seeking revenge on Riverside for that first match defeat and hopefully re-position themselves closer to the top. Red Cow are also aiming to use the turnaround to turn the tables on the Nook as this dark horse side have yet to win their first match despite some great cup match play taking out some good sides on the way to the quarters of the Cup. Interestingly the Cow faces the Nook at home in the KO Cup quarter finals next week. It should prove an interesting launch pad on which to start their comeback trail. Happy New Year all, see you next week. Report by Paul G. Lacey

DIVISION 1 Pegasus Snooker Club failed to pick up the two points they desperately required to force their way back into the title race and had to settle for a hard fought draw against the league leaders. The result was decided in the final frame at The Peoples Hall where the Pegasus pairing of Chris Piech and Mike Langdon took on Zeb Ahmed and John Marshall. The Pegasus pair got off to the worst possible start with Mike Langdon guilty of conceding some 15 points in fouls alone as Peoples Hall took command of the frame with an early 34 point lead. The Pegasus pair pulled themselves back into contention with a run of 17 from Piech before Langdon swung the frame back in Pegasus's favour with a well taken 32 but the break ended with a missed red which was punished by Ahmed to restore the lead before John Marshall closed out the frame sinking blue and pink to give Peoples Hall a share of the points. Earlier in the evening Chris Piech got the better of Zeb Ahmed helped by a good 29 break in a comfortable win but Peoples Hall responded when Yasir Hussain beat Andy Orange. Mike Langdon then put Pegasus on the brink of victory with a solid win against John Marshall who was left at the snooker's required stage with one red left remaining. At Pegasus a tactical switch by Peoples Hall very nearly backfired as Nav Hussain only just scraped past Pegasus's Jamie Mathers by sinking Pink and Black whilst the sacrificed Yasin Abbas was no match for Chris Brooks. With the scores level the final singles frame suddenly became a must win match for Peoples Hall who

probably wouldn't have relished needing a win against the formidable Pegasus pairing of Brooks and Mathers in the final doubles frame. It proved to be a tight tactical encounter but it was Peoples Hall's Nasir Hussain who came through against Steve Booth to ensure at least an away leg draw. In the doubles frame the normally ruthless Nav Hussain missed a dolly of a black, which would have forced a re-spot and perhaps the chance of Peoples Hall repeating their victory from earlier in the season but a draw was probably a fair result. BCI Snooker Centre “A” had a solid victory against Cotgrave Welfare. At BCI, Jason Bettridge was rampant with breaks of 31 and 44 during his singles (against Ted Cope) and doubles frame. Steve Coleman was a comfortable winner against Colin Armstrong. Hanson Stowe was also comfortable against Phil Foster. The combination of Bettridge and Coleman were too good for Cope & Armstrong with the help of Bettridge's 44 break. At Cotgrave, things were a lot closer and it could have been quite easily 4-0 to Cotgrave. Anthony McMahon made a quality 31 break in his win against Jon Mason. Sam Haugh was 30 odd points up before a good comeback from Billy Johnson. Johnson eventually missing the black completely to give Haugh the frame. Wayne Martin pipped Harry Briody on the pink and Kwok Yip scraped past John Cyrek on the pink as he went in-off. win over Barry Stark who never seemed to get going. Chris Winter was too strong for Danny Di Folco in his frame with some solid potting not leaving Do Folco much of a chance in the balls. James Notman took on Bob Walker in a close fought frame but Notman came through in the end. In the doubles, Spencer and Winter demolished Walker and Di Folco for a fine 4 -0 home leg win. At Stadium, Matt Ellis was on top form to beat James Booth. Steve Butler then dug deep to secure a rare win against Malc Belshaw. Pete Gormley and Brian Kinton then fought out a nip and tuck frame which Gormley just managed to edge on the pink to put Stadium 3-0 up. In the pairs Butler & Ellis opened up a 20 point lead against Booth & Belshaw and looked odds on to make it 4-0, but Booth showed real class to take yellow, green, brown, blue and pink and with it the frame. DIVISION 2 Phoenix Cue Sports cemented their place in the play-offs with a resounding 6-2 win against City Hospital Leisure Centre. At City Hospital, the home side's Russ Kirk, Dennis Peet, Alan Taylor and Steve Tring were all defeated by Steve Howard, Gary Birks, David Allsopp and Ryan Baker respectively. Things were a little tighter at Phoenix as Ashley Goring was beaten by the impressive Rob Wallace. Anthony Adkin just pipped the improving Lee Archer on the black. Roger Giddens beat Barry Chadwick and the pairing of Archer and Wallace won a black ball frame against Stephen Lally and Giddens. Report by Steve Butler

Arnold Town moved up to second place in the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division but missed out on a chance of going level on points with the league leaders. The Eagles are now two points behind Mickleover Sports after a 1-1 draw in their home match with Brodsworth Welfare that was played at Radford FC. But, in what was the only match to beat the subzero temperatures on Saturday, they had to show great determination to get that point after their goalkeeper was sent off in the first twenty seconds. Lee Broster was adjudged to have handled the ball outside of his area and seventeenth-placed Brodsworth then took advantage by breaking the deadlock through Stuart Slack on 20 minutes. And, they looked to be heading for their second win on their travels until Brett Adams levelled matters with just ten minutes remain to preserve Arnold's unbeaten 'home' record.

Only 1 game managed to beat the freeze and Barrow Town missed the chance to close the gap on the top 4 when they were held to a 2-2 draw by Heanor Town. Heanor, without a win since the 22nd of November, took the lead through defender Rob Mawer in front of a crowd of 120 before Stu Wilson cancelled out the vistor's advantage. Heanor regained the initiative before half time when fresh signing Anthony Bedwood opened his Heanor Account with their 2nd goal to go in at the break 1-2 up. Not to be denied Barrow fought back and Wilson netted his 10th of the season and 2nd of the afternoon to give Barrow a share of the points.

extremely good, taking into account the conditions. The pitch desperate being hard, was well grassed and a credit to the home club. In an entertaining first half Yorkshire Main took the lead in the 8th minute, Dean Wilburn running on to a through ball, to send a rasping shot into the corner of the net. The home team hit back and where on level terms in the 11th minute, the Yorkshire Main defence seemed to go to 'sleep' and allowed the home striker to score from close range. Danny Manningfield restored Main's advantage in the 24th minute, he waltzed past the home defence before slotting home. However, the home team continued to give the visitors defence problems and again levelled in the 44th minute with Main's rearguard again at 'sixes and sevens'. Right on half time, Dean Wilburn got his second, to put Main 3-2 in front, his superb strike going into the top corner. The second half did not match the first and when the home team conceded an own goal to make it 4-2 to the CMFL side they lost their fighting spirit and Yorkshire Main played out the game comfortably, ensuring a place in the draw for the next round. On the league scene all the matches where postponed due to the hard frosts that have taken place over the week, another headache for the hard working CMFL Fixtures Secretary, Steve Broadhurst who has spent the afternoon rearranging matches.

Yorkshire Main saved a record from being broken, its 19 years since the CMFL recorded a complete postponement of matches, but the Yorkshire club played in the only match remaining, a Doncaster F A Challenge Cup tie against Doncaster Deaf. The CMFL club went through to the next round, recording a 4-2 victory, in a match described as Report by Frank Harwood

claims to the comeback stakes and with a topsy turvy first half season they may well use the Shed and Plainsman as stepping stones on their way up in next weeks matches. MEN'S: In yet another surprise turnaround for division A the Queens finally lose their unbeaten status as they went all the way to the wire against Cambridge on away turf only to lose the last leg and the match 5-4. Meanwhile the Beechdale secured a win at their away game against Top Valley to slip in and steal the league leadership albeit still a match in front and their bye game looming next week should see the dust settle around the leader board as we move into the second half of the season. Cambridge's win moves them up the ladder two spots but can they continue their winning format? I'm looking forward to see the situation of the relegation zones too over the next few weeks as the Clifton welfare have their work cut out to move out of the zone if they want to remain in division A, I know they've got the darts to do it but may be lacking the seasoned experience? Who knows, hopefully this gallant squad will find their footing this half. Despite byes for both division B's Birchover and Jockeys they both retain joint second with madhouse but next week sees Lion and madhouse taking their byes so will the dust shift and the positions with them? Watch this space as these four could make or break each other in their fight for promotion. Report by Paul G. Lacey

top slot position with the Pride as they turn their 3 leg difference advantage into a two point deficit and they are now in joint second with CBI and facing the comeback trail. Pride however seemed to have taken a bit more water with their xmas tipple as they bounce into the new year arena with precision darts taking the poets out 5-2 not only levelling the pre xmas leg deficit but also ensuring top position. But knowing the Strelley gals, they won't be taking this season lying down and I for one will be glued to this spot next week as the Strelley face they nemesis the Pride in a top slot face off. Meanwhile in division B the Vine take a real punishing 7-0 loss to the Old General pushing Vine way down the table to 6th place. A top slot face off between the Park Tavern and the Nuthall saw the match all the way to the wire as the Park finally took the 7th leg, the match and the pole position of the B division, MIXED: With just division B kicking off to start to the new year and with some surprise changes due to the first of the new year results. Shed still remain the only unbeaten side in the division and still lays claim to the top slot. New challengers, and indeed newbie squad to the league, the Catchems chase gamely to the top as they rattle the foundations of plainsman's claim to second place with an almost unsettling 5-2 victory over them. Sheriffs take a plunge to 4th place after losing to the seemingly unbeatable Shed. Both Nuthall A and the General are laying

BEESTON, CHILWELL & DIST. DARTS - LADIES: What a weird turnaround stage for the Independent league as the first half of the season saw newbie side the Boat, Lenton, move from second to bottom and take their fight gradually right to the top of the league and settling the first half in second after knocking Boat & Horses down to third slot with a 4-3 victory and only dropping two defeats on the way, not at all bad for a new squad on the block. Birchover remain firmly seated on the throne as their first match back after the Hols saw them score a 5-2 win over Greyhound. The Jaguar used the post festive game to finally kick start their new year with a brilliant 5-2 victory over the Hop Pole gals finally breaking the Jag Jinx after 5 consecutive losses, have they finally broke their own mould. Hop Pole are geared for they second half come back as the first half of the season saw the side dogged with illness etc leaving the squad often short of players, hopefully we shall see them back at the top again with a few wins under their belts in this half. MEN'S: No league matches this week due to the Jubilee cup rounds. Through to semis are: Birchover; Queens; Boat & Horses and Pelican. Saturday's results from bmibaby Elite League leaders Sheffield went to overtime and penalties at home to the Cardiff Devils on Saturday night (3-4), Coventry hammered lowly Hull (7-1), Edinburgh beat Basingstoke (3-4) and Newcastle came out on top against Manchester (5-4). Steelers had two overtime games last weekend and took both points on both occasions, this time Devils won the penalty shoot-out.

Edinburgh Capitals 0 Nottingham Panthers 6 The GMB Nottingham Panthers came flying out of the blocks and eventually won with a 0-6 shut-out at Edinburgh on Sunday. We hardly gave the home side a sniff of the puck and jumped to a three goal lead in the first ten minutes. After adding the only goal of the second period, there was only one team in it again in the third as we again dominated, meanwhile Michel dealt with everything at the other end. A solid and professional performance in our only game of the weekend. Meanwhile leaders Sheffield dropped their second point of the weekend, losing in overtime at home to Belfast (3-4), Coventry won at Manchester (1-2) and the other bmibaby Elite League game also went to overtime, Newcastle winning at Hull (3-4).

Nottingham 23 Cornish Pirates 19 Attendance: 1,705

Pirates comfortably cleared the danger, but this lifted Nottingham and they gradually got more into the game. Greig Tonks was just wide with his first penalty attempt, but just as Jones had done earlier he made amends a minute later to level the scores at three points each just before the half hour, and that's how it stayed until the break. Eight minutes into the second half Pirates were back in front with a second penalty from Jones, but Nottingham responded with much more urgency and powered forward with Montagu and Tim Taylor both going close. They forced a penalty for Tonks to make it six points apiece, only for Jones to put Pirates back in front with his third kick minutes later. As Nottingham's performance gradually improved over the second half Joe Duffey was unlucky not to break through, but the attack did bring a penalty for Tonks to again level the scores. The game swung away from them in the space of five minutes though as an opportunist try from scrum half Nick Griffiths, and a conversion and penalty from Jones opened up a ten point gap. At that stage, with fifteen minutes remaining, Pirates looked the more likely winners and will kick themselves for not closing out the game. Having been second best for much of it though, the Green and Whites responded with a spell of controlled rugby which eventually brought its reward with those two late tries. Having camped on the Pirates line and gone close a couple of time the referee awarded a penalty try, with Tonks converting to bring them back to 16-19. And a similar effort saw Montagu steal the victory with that dramatic try in the second minute of injury time, Tonks again converting. So having been below par for so long, Nottingham finally showed their true capabilities to move back into third place in the Division One table. But Pirates will justifiably see this as a missed opportunity.

An injury time try from Dan Montagu gave Nottingham a 23-19 win over Cornish Pirates at Meadow Lane. But for so much of this game a win looked unlikely as Pirates generally had the better of things, only for the Green and Whites to snatch two late tries to secure the points in a dramatic finale. It was a sluggish first half from Nottingham though, particularly the first quarter, as they struggled to find any kind of rhythm, and Pirates looked the more dangerous side. They had an early chance to take the lead when outside half Rhys Jones went for an ambitious penalty just inside his own half, but the ball fell just short. He was on target a minute later though to make it 3-nil in the fifth minute. They so nearly stretched that lead when an interception on half way saw them attack down the middle, but as the ball was moved out to the left Rhodri McAttee was forced into touch a metre or two short. Despite this wake up call Nottingham still struggled to get into the game and could have fallen further behind, but were thankful to see Jones mis-kick a third penalty attempt. They then suffered an injury blow as scrum half Tim Usasz had to leave the field with a suspected broken collar bone. After a third miss from Jones the Green and Whites finally got onto the attack as David Jackson set off on a looping run following a lineout on the Pirates' 10 metre line midway through the first half. That was the first time Nottingham had carried the ball into their opponents' Next Fixture: Nottingham v Blaydon, 17th Jan, 22. Jackson lost possession as he was tackled and 2pm - Meadow Lane
