NOTTINGHAM RUGBY’S DREAMS SHATTERED IN THE FINALS SECS!
BALLSMANIA - NOW A WHOPPING 24 PAGES! Nottingham Rugby's Twickenham cup final dream to four points at the break. A yellow card for Matt was snatched away from them at the death in Parr five minutes before the interval looked likely to Sunday's dramatic semi final at Meadow Lane. prove costly. Overall the visitors showed Leeds centre Rob Vickerman crossed in the left their professionalism, and had certainly done their hand corner. It was cruelly disappointing after such homework on Nottingham. They knew their an epic battle. There was every bit as much tension opponents tend to finish games strongly, and and drama as there had been in the RBS Six planned their game accordingly. There was something special about today. An old foe, a big crowd, glorious sunshine – and an air of determined spirit bubbling beneath the entire afternoon. It felt a bit like the good old days. Or at least the average old days that look so appealing when set against our current plight. The players felt it, the supporters felt, and for long periods the game went as well as we could have hoped. And yet it all came to nothing – again. It was a scrappy game with very few chances. Wolves played a surprisingly basic long ball game, hoping to cash in on the physical presence of Iwelumo and Ebanks-Blake. Forest held firm, feeding occasionally on scraps, and Wolves were restricted to no more than two efforts on goal. But just as Tyson and McCleary gave Forest fans license to dream of a cheeky winner, Wolves mustered a goal from nothing. Their 5,000-strong support were in party mood for the final minutes as their team marches unhindered to the Premiership. Forest face an uncertain future. At least half of our remaining games have to be wins, maybe even more. It is a lot to ask of any side. Like most, I have spent the season

waiting patiently for the predestined turnaround and peaceful mid-table run-in. But after several false starts, the run-in has arrived long before we are ready for it. Only now is the reality of our peril starting to become clear. Star exits at basement prices, shrinking attendances, the return of the tedium, the terraces and the “you're not famous anymore”. It could be just around the corner. Turner – 7 – a steady performance from a goalkeeper keen to impress. His distribution was fairly average, but he immediately demonstrated that crosses and communication are no problem. This will appease the Smith critics. Gunter -7 – a steady performance as part of a back four that looked worlds better than it did at Burnley last weekend. Morgan – 9 – perhaps guilty of losing his man for the goal, but this was a titanic display from Forest's outstanding player of the second half of the season. Wilson – 8 – an efficient and industrious performance to keep a tough Wolves strikeforce quiet. Lynch – 7 – continues to look a lot more settled in his role under Davies. McGugan – 6 – not the battling performance that Davies' rant might have inspired. Cohen – 7 – played out of his skin and never shirked a challenge. This kind of metal was essential if Forest were to get a result today, and Cohen will be as disappointed as anybody that his efforts were not rewarded. Perch – 6.5 – stood tall and threw himself into some vital challenges. We missed Osbourne or Moussi's creative input in this role. Earnshaw – 7 – worked extremely hard but had very little to work with. Earnshaw is desperate to avoid the drop. McSheffrey – 6.5 – flashes of excellence, again, but struggled to sustain the quality against a strong Wolves side. Anderson – 6.5 – looked a little bit lightweight at times, but his poise on the break continues to be a major asset. Subs: McCleary – 6, Tyson – 6, Garner – 6 Report by Alex Campbell
the game after winning four of their last five games and could have taken the lead within three minutes - but some heroic goalkeeping by Kevin Pilkington kept them at bay. First he made a fine reflex save from Goulding's powerful drive inside the box but the ball fell to Robinson six yards out on his head with the simple task of heading home....until the goalkeeper stretched with all his might to claw the ball out on the goal-line. The loose ball eventually fell to Pitman, but he blasted his effort against the top of the bar and over. On seven minutes Pilkington was called into action again with another terrific save, this time from Pitman. A ball in behind the County defence had the forward clear on goal but the experienced goalkeeper made himself big and saved the shot ten yards out. Bournemouth were mounting the early pressure and their vocal supporters were right behind their side. County's first chance fell on ten minutes to Delroy Facey from a Matt Hamshaw corner, but his header was blocked by Hollands in the six-yard box. Facey was denied again on fifteen minutes after a fine run and cross by Weston towards the far post, but the powerful frontman's header was straight into the grateful arms of Jalal. On a playing surface in tip-top condition County were getting into their stride by the twenty-minute mark and were
Notts County claimed their first away win of 2009 with a fine 1-0 victory at AFC Bournemouth this afternoon. Myles Weston's low finish six minutes before the break secured the valuable three points for County, who put in a terrific display that merited the reward of a victory. The win could have been greater, but Jamie Forrester's penalty late in the first half was saved. Ian McParland restored experienced Forrester and Michael Johnson to the starting line-up this afternoon. Joint-leading scorer Forrester - who scored against Bournemouth earlier in the season - replaced Jonathan Forte in attack for his first start in five games and Johnson was back at the heart of the defence at the expense of Stephen Hunt. In the glorious afternoon sunshine Bournemouth got the game underway. County were donning their change colours of claret and blue and were attacking towards the stand where the vocal Bournemouth fans were situated. Notts County report continued passing the ball around well; looking a threat down the wings with Weston in particular enjoying plenty of the ball. Another good run by Weston on thirty-two created an opening for the young winger to get a shot in, but a deflection off Pearce took the sting out of the effort and Jalal claimed the ball easily. Jalal had no chance though on thirty-nine when Notts took the lead through Weston. A quick throw-in by Hamshaw found Facey in the box who hooked the ball back to Weston on the penalty spot, and he took took a touch to get the ball onto his trusted left foot and he then drove the ball low and hard past Jalal. County could have doubled their lead a minute later when Forrester was brought down by Jalal in the box leaving the Referee with no other decision but to point to the spot. However the goalkeeper atoned for his error by diving low to his left to claw the striker's penalty away. That sent the home fans wild because a second goal a ninth of the season for Forrester - would have been a bitter pill to swallow. Notts at that point had to remain level-headed and remember they were ahead, despite the reaction from the crowd which made it feel like Bournemouth had taken the lead. Bournemouth didn't threaten again before the end of the half, and County went in at the break a goal to the good. County began the second-half instantly on the attack and within fifteen seconds Weston forced a corner from a powerful shot from twenty yards that Jalal tipped over. Approaching the hour mark County had given nothing away at the back and were only too happy to soak up some pressure and then allow the creative players such as Weston and Hamshaw to do damage on the break. County were putting in arguably their best away performance of the campaign. They were looking composed and assured on the ball, defending well and always looking a threat going forwards. Bournemouth only threatened from set-pieces but County's defence were resolute and holding onto their lead with every last ounce of energy in their bodies. Gavin Strachan was introduced into the action with twelve minutes remaining in place of Jamie Forrester, which meant a fiveman midfield and Facey up front on his own. Just a few minutes later Jonathan Forte replaced Matt Hamshaw down the right wing, injecting more pace into the attack. County could have wrapped it up with five minutes left but Forte took a heavy touch when clean through after a great ball from Weston and Jalal rushed out to clear. In the end it didn't matter despite Bournemouth's late surges forward because County remained rock solid and thoroughly deserved their

midweek win against Southwell City, took Calverton Miners Welfare to the top of the Buckingham Insurance Supreme Division, but not for the first time this season the Nottinghamshire club lost their next match and so again relinquished the position. Harworth Colliery Institute regained top spot, they won 3-1 at home against Southwell City, 2-0 in front at half time the North Nottinghamshire clubs goal scorers, where Tom Cook and a brace from 'ace' striker, Ryan Paczkowski. Ben Porter scored the Southwell goal. Newark Town completed a notable double against the previous leaders Calverton Miners Welfare, two first half goals by Chris Self and Simon Ellison gave the visitors a 2-0 victory. The home team, who led 3-0 at the interval, scored through Carl Westcarr, Arron Korol, Craig Anderson and new signing Alex Horton. Good results for both clubs, after midweek disappointment, when they both eliminated from cup competitions. Sutton Town AFC chances of the championship took a hammer blow at Yorkshire Main, the home team won 2-0 with two first half goals, by Sam Agar and Daniel Rhodes. A penalty in the 16th minute, converted by Frazer Thomas, for Pinxton, gave his team the points, against visitors Kinsley Boys. Fourth placed Staveley Miners Welfare Reserves, shared four goals at Christchurch Meadows, against Belper Town Reserves. A broken leg and a suspected broken leg spoiled the encounter between Sutton Town AFC Reserves and Rainworth Miners Welfare Reserves, which ended in a goalless draw. clash between Holbrook and Blackwell finished 0-0. Scots Grey 1 Lakeside Athletic 0 Scots Grey FC booked their place in The Final of The FA Sunday Cup after a tense victory over Lakeside Athletic. With testing conditions and a swirling wind, both teams struggled to get a hold of the ball early on. A place in The Final was up for grabs and by the looks on the players' faces, you could sense it. Chris Murdock came closet to breaking the deadlock in the first half but his stinging drive cannoned off the crossbar as Scots began to press. The crowd at the Hucknall Town FC ground looked on as both sides battled for a place in the Anfield Final and if it wasn't for the heroics of Scot's goalkeeper Ross Whalin, Lakeside could have realised their dream. But the plaudits will go to Andrew Frawley after his brilliant drive sailed into the back of the net six minutes from time. It proved to be the difference between the teams. Whalin was beaten in the 91st minute but the crossbar came to his rescue. The Final will take place on the 26th April at Anfield By Alex Walker Hucknall Town 2 Tamworth 3 Despite putting on a brave performance on Saturday, against second placed Tamworth, Hucknall Town went down to a 3-2 home defeat at Watnall Road watched by a crowd of 356. Despite the defeat there were a number of positives to take from the game but Manager, Bryan Chambers, was disappointed with some of the goals his team conceded. He went on to say that the three home games coming up in quick succession will obviously be crucial to his sides survival hopes and has appealed for the crowd to play their part. It will be a huge ask of the players now if they are to pull off the great escape and they will need to take almost maximum points from the home games with Farsley Celtic, on Tuesday night, Blyth Spartans this coming Saturday, and Vauxhall Motors a week on Tuesday. One piece of good news for everyone is the fact that influential midfielder Laurie Wilson is available again after serving his two match suspension and he goes straight into the squad for the Farsley Celtic game on Tuesday night, kick off at Watnall Road is 7.45pm. Normal admission prices do apply for this game but please save your match ticket to enable you to qualify for the reduction in price for the Blyth Spartans and Vauxhall Motors home games. desperate need themselves of maximum points. Buxton 0 Eastwood Town 0 Eastwood picked up another well earned point despite having Captain Anton Foster sent off midway through the second half, for a second bookable offence. Paul Cox resisted bringing back leading goalscorer Ian Holmes and fit again Russell Cooke however he did restore Cooke to the bench at the expense of Paul Robinson. In a hard fought game, Buxton were the first to create a chance, with Gavin Knight's shot deflecting off Ben Chapman for a corner, and Gregg Anderson heading over Scott Maxfield's cross. Danny Holland nearly broke free of his marker but lost his footing and Mark Smith was denied by Gavin Knight as he shaped to shoot. With the game largely being played out in midfield a number of niggly free kicks were falling the Badgers way from which they looked very dangerous. When Richard Dunning was fouled about 25 yards out, his free kick was parried by Scott Hartley, Meikle retrieved the ball and worked it back to Dunning whose far post cross was headed wide by Hume. When Buxton threatened, Shane Redmond managed to finger tip a cross intended for Mark Reed over him and Chapman cleared. Then Gavin Knight tried his luck from 25 yards but fired well over. Eastwood were denied two stonewall
Non-League Football penalties in quick succession mid-way through the first half. Marc Smith jumped for a Meikle cross with Scott Hartley and Steve Ridley, the ball rolling down Ridley's arm before being cleared with a flick of the wrist. The referee might have been unsighted but his assistant had a perfectly good view of the incident. Moments later Meikle skinned Ridley and ran into the box before being brought down by two Buxton defenders sliding in. However the referee Mr Powell managed to wave play on, on both occasions. Danny Holland put the ball the wrong side of the post after Smith and Todd had created a good opportunity for him. Meikle won a free kick wide right and Smith headed Dunning's kick back across goal with Hume coming in on the back post and heading wide. The fussy referee and his assistants were managing to unite the 472 crowd, with a whistle and card happy display, when in truth there wasn't a bad tackle all game. Lindon Meikle went on one of his trademark runs cutting inside Ridley and Knight however as he went to shoot, the ball bobbled and he fired miles wide. Neil Stevens and Mark Reed tried to play a one-two on the edge of the Badgers penalty area but Reed over -hit the return, and the ball ran through to Redmond. Moments later Hartley finger- tipped Dunning's free kick over the bar. Mark Smith almost continued his great scoring form deflecting Anton Foster's shot goalwards but Hartley had anticipated and got down well to save easily. Michael Towey did well to get down the line and beat Flynn, Meikle conceding the corner. From the corner Towey got up well, heading over when well placed. Andy Todd played a lovely reverse pass to put Dunning clear wide of the box, Hartley parried his shot into a ruck of players but Ridley cleared before Holland could capitalise on the loose ball. In the second half Tommy Agus blocked Chris Flynn's shot from the edge of the box with Hume heading the resultant corner over. Ian Holmes ,just on as a substitute for Danny Holland, was flagged offside after Smith had put him clear and Dunning almost beat Hartley on the near post from a free kick but the big keeper was down quickly. As the Badgers looked like they were starting to built up a head of steam the referee took centre stage and changed the whole complexion of the game booking Foster for a second time for an innocuous challenge on Ridgley. He had originally only awarded a free kick but after Hartley had charged out of his box remonstrating, he went over to consult the linesman ( who had failed to make a single decision all game) and Foster was shown his second yellow followed by the red. With Buxton now enjoying far more of the ball, the Badgers rearguard was under attack but they stood up to the threat magnificently. In truth they only allowed the Buxton attack one clear cut chance in the remaining 20 minutes, former Mansfield striker Danny Reet striking the post from six yards. The sending off certainly opened the game up and with Buxton throwing everything forward, gaps inevitably appeared at the other end. Smith headed on a Redmond kick putting Holmes clear, unfortunately he chipped not only Hartley but also cleared the crossbar. Redmond lost the flight of a Buxton corner, Chapman clearing for a second corner and this time Stevens headed well over from a free header. A patient build up by Eastwood was almost rewarded when Andy Todd tried to curl the ball but it went agonisingly inches over. At the other end, and with the Eastwood resolute defence restricting the Buxton attack to hopeful crosses, Grant Black tried his luck from outside the box but Redmond was able to take the shot easily. Following a corner, substitute Matt Rhead beat Agus and fired a shot in on goal that Hartley fumbled. As Mark Hume swooped for the loose ball Ridley managed to get a foot in to deny the former Buxton player. There was one last chance for the Badgers with Tommy Agus allowing the ball to bounce over his head, Ian Holmes broke into the box and his cross was flicked away from the waiting Matt Rhead by Grant Black, with the goal
beckoning.
Winterton Rangers 0 Arnold Town 0 Arnold secured a deserved point in an entertaining goal less draw in Scunthorpe. The Eagles will feel that they did enough to win the game however their finishing let them down. The game saw Plant stretched off with a suspected broken ankle just nine minutes after coming off the bench whilst Hudson limped off making him a doubt for the Senior Cup tie at Gedling Town on Wednesday. The home side went close to taking an early lead as Render just failed to connect at the far post. Simms and Freestone then combined well with Simpson saving Freestones fierce drive. Freestone then controversially had a header ruled out for offside. Law lobbed over for the home side and Simms went close to netting his first goal for Arnold. Simpson saved well from Sloane and Brewster as Arnold controlled the second half. During the final ten minutes Arnold had four excellent chances to win the game with Walton twice failing to make the opportunities count. Brewster then flicked an effort a foot wide before Simms did not get enough power on his shot to trouble Simpson. The draw extends the win-less streak to eight games, however with Simms and Freestone combining well up front and with the imminent return from suspension of Mitchell the signs look good that the poor run will soon come to an end.

PLAYER PROFILE Name: Simon Murphy Team: Poets Corner Vets Nickname: The Monk, after Jason Stratham in the film Mean Machine! Age: 40 Job: Head Shoe Gluer in Shoe factory Position: Former Midfield general, turned Goalkeeper for the past 5 years. Previous clubs: Quite a few, but the main ones are St Patricks (Wilford), Boots, Meadows Albion, Maypole and Windmill Supports: Forest Footballing hero: Stuart Pearce and Bobby Moore. I don't need to explain my reasoning for Psycho, but I loved Bobby Moore for being the ultimate pro and then stealing a load of bracelets at the 1970 World Cup. Quality! Biggest influence: Watching and enjoying the Forest team in the 70's and 80's and also growing-up alongside Dale Campbell. I never wanted to get as fat as him, so I trained as much as possible! Best footballing moment: It's a bit cheesy, but being picked to play for the great Poet's side in the 1980's. They won everything until I signed and then I left two years later and they won everything again! I put it down to Barry Gibb's £7k pearl white nashers putting me off! Biggest regret in football: Not being able to catch Nick Hawkins, then of Wollaton, as I chased him round Colwick racecourse a couple of years ago. I few years younger and fitter and I'd of caught him! Funniest football memory: Being smacked by the legend himself, Brian Clough as I celebrated a cup win in 1989 against QPR. I was just trying to get to the players (if only Justin was still there!), but Brian had other ideas. Best trainer: Tony Downing at Meadows Albion. You couldn't walk for two days after a session with him! Worst trainer: Dave Harbottle. He always turns-up and automatically thinks he's going to play. To be honest when I first met him I thought he was Gypo! Worst haircut: Forgetting my dyed perm in the 80's, it has to be Stevie King. Looks like he combs his barnet with a lamb chop! Trev Brown on the other hand looks like he's just done 20 lengths at Portland and forgot to take his swimming cap off!

The Monk’s next to his Justin Fashanu model Worst dressed: It's a close call between father and son act, The Cysters. Midnight Joe just takes everyone's hand-me-downs and he must pass them onto Danny! Can't forget Trev Brown's famous white cardigan – it had massive brown buttons on the front and he looked like something from Starsky and Hutch! Team jokers: The whole Poets team like to have a laugh and a joke, apart from 'Mr Serious' Trev Broadley. Dave Harbottle always winds him up and he bites every time! Best player played with: Can't choose one, so it's between Cass, Dobs, Dave Taylor and Andy Beckford. All four of them have played at a good level over the years and probably still could. Worst player: Has to be Midnight Joe (Cyster). I'll give him his due he's knocking on the wrong side of 50, but it always looks like he's running-up the travelator! Poets Corner Vets play Radford Vets in the Semifinal of the Cup next week. KO is at 2pm at Dunkirk and everyone is welcome.

EMPAL - BURTON JOYCE THE NEW LEADERS AFTER A 5-0 ROMP! Burton Joyce A are the new leaders in Division One after a comprehensive 5-0 win over Linford Nelson. The scoring was shared around through Keith Bailey, Ben Allison, Daniel Beatty, Art Luetkmeier and a rare goal from defender Johnny Stevenson. Nottingham Law School move up to second place with close 1-0 win over Fanzines United. In a tight affair Dace gave School the lead in the second half and gamely hung until a last minute penalty gave United a sniff of a point. Step up keeper Greg Bourne became the hero saving to keep all three points for his side. Long time leaders Brinsthorpe Rangers descend to third spot after 2-1 defeat to a full “international “ strength West End side. Radcliffe Olympic Sunday lost ground on the leaders after 2-2 draw with Total Reclaims Demolition and being two nil up! Honours were shared in the West Bridgford Albion versus Nottingham Medics double header. Albion claimed the first 3-1 with Tom Carey and Brett Swerski with a brace before crashing 3-0 in the immediate return. Unbeaten Arnold Cross Keys go marching on in Division 2 beating a spirited Burton Joyce B side 3-0 over at Southglade. Joyce started forcefully and could have gone two up in the first fifteen minutes before Keys snapped into action. Nil-nil at half time despite Keys claiming a shot had crossed the line and having a goal ruled out for offside. Totally dominating the second half Keys opened the scoring through Luke Smith blasting home a free kick from twentyfive yards out. The busy Ryan King then punished a keeping error before an impressive headed own goal made a comfortable 3-0 scoreline in the end. Fox & Crown climb to third following 3-2 win over much improved Riverside Moores. Christian Sharples had put Crown into the lead before a double from David Bell changed the complexion of the game. Two late penalties converted by Paul Charles readdressed the balance snatching the points for Crown. Fc Grey Mare Olympico enjoyed their first double header of the run in beating Inn The Bank 5-1 not once but twice! In first contest Chris McLaughlin bagged a hat trick and missed an early penalty after Daniel McQuinn had given Bank and early lead. Dan Wheat and Stuart Dack completed the scoring. Trent Allstars snuck in behind the leaders after 8-0 drubbing of Ardley Athletic still reeling from last week's broken leg to Chris Marsden. Luke Shaw bagged one goal but set hat tricks for his colleagues Alex Bates and Courney Charles. Highfield Park Rangers probably sealed Butler Benficas demotion with 2-1 at Cropwell Bishop as Pollard snatched the winner with five minutes left to go! Duncan
Richmond had given Butler an early lead but Boyes equalised for Rangers in what was basically a “scrappy” match. Punjab Colts are clinging onto top spot in Division Three as Wollaton Pirates start their run to catch up on games in hand. Colts beat rivals Chequers United 4-1 in top of the table clash. Pirates didn't need Duckworth Lewis as they rattled up a cricket score in their double header against Nottingham Medics winning 5-0 and 7-0. Frankie Labbate yet another hat trick supported by Fragola - 2 and Piliero. Roy Kileavy got his name on the scoresheet to break up the monotony of the usual scoring suspects! Changing the side for the return with six changes centre back Oliver Reeves surpassed all expectations with a double plus Fragola and Piliero as tradition demands! Trent Vale kept out Radcliffe Olympic in 1-1 draw to dent Olympics outside promotion chances. Burniston looked to have nicked all the points for Vale but Sinnott popped up with a late equaliser for Olympic. Clifton Dynamo beat Plumtree 5-3 with a cameo appearance in goal for Meehan. Kinoulton Villa courtesy of a Daniel Collinson hat trick disposed of Brooks Villa 3-1. Beeston Athletic beat Boots Wednesday 4-1 with Rogers, Bretnall, Waylan and Hodges sharing the goals around. In Division 4 St Anns hang onto top spot on goal difference from Caythorpe after drawing 0-0 with title favourites GMB. Caythorpe beat Clifton Dynamo Reserves 3-2 to stay second. Wollaton Pirate Reserves beat Attsu 3-2 to stay third. GMB have around six or seven matches to catch up on their rivals so must be odds on for the title if they can finish their matches this side of the summer Test series! Real Bulwell beat Toton Athletic 6-3

NOTTS SUNDAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE - GREYS ON THEIR WAY TO ANFIELD! 'WE'RE ON OUR WAY TO ANFIELD', sang the Scots Grey faithful as the Bulwell outfit deservedly won themselves a place in the Carlsberg FA Sunday Final at the home of Liverpool FC thanks to the only goal of the game against Devon based outfit Lakeside Athletic scored by Andy Frawley with five minutes remaining. This was a typical semi-final, with no quarter asked or given. Scots hit both the post and upright in an enthralling encounter before long serving Frawley sealed the tie. However, there was still time for a scare as the visitors to the Hucknall FC ground hit the crossbar in the ninety second minute. The final will be held on either Sundays 26th April or 3rd May, dependent upon the Merseysider's progress in this season's European Cup. With the leaders; engaged in the aforementioned Carlsberg FA Sunday Trophy, the chasers in the Premier Division experienced differing fortunes and none more so than second placed Clifton Villa, who could not contain the firepower of Arnold's Julian Cotes and Vladamir Farrell. Villa went ahead through an early own goal and added another in the second period by Matt Wootton but were made to look on in bewilderment as Coates went nap and Farrell netted a hat trick in a remarkable 9-2 victory. Third placed Redhill also came unstuck against lowly Nuthall, as Jay Beecher hit two and Bill Bearder and Aaron Hooton one each for the visitors in the 4-2 win. Carl Wainwright and Adam Stephenson notched the consolation efforts. Emerging Clumber, moved up a place thanks to two goals apiece from Wes Burke and Carl Westcarr and one each from Jared Westcarr and Jayford Henry in the 6-1 defeat of jaded Nottm Alumni. The surprises continued at challenging Trentside, where efforts from Paul Bearder, Beardsall (two) and Aaron Hunter gave visitors Nuthall a 4-2 victory, with Nathan and Tyrone Francis scoring for the hosts. Damian Pennant hit a couple supported by Lloyd Fletcher, Stuart Coke and Ruben Thomas as Nottm WI Cavaliers overcame Radford Park Rangers 5-1. The mid-week Section KO Cup semi-final between Clumber and Arnold was abandoned after seventy five minutes due to fog, with Clumber leading 4-2. The rearranged fixture will be at Greenwood Meadows on Thursday 9th April with a 7:30 KO. Trowsers have almost kissed their Division title hopes goodbye after finishing their league programme with a 3-2 defeat against 'pretenders' George Street. Rolls Royce Leisure Sunday have taken over at the top on goal difference thanks to a 9-1 massacre of basement outfit, Carlton Catholic. Alistair Jones netted twice and Kane Matthews once for George Street, whilst Aaron Baguley and Jodie Hughes replied. Their were hat tricks for Carl McDermott and Andy Start of Rolls supplemented by two from Darren Dickens and one from Aaron Parkin, with Ricky Sheavills notching the consolation. Clifton Centrals and Old Colonial shared two goals and the points It was honours even at the top of Division Two, where leaders Rolls Royce Leisure Villa were held to a 1-1 draw by close rivals, Cotgrave PFC. Colin Woodward struck for Villa and Chris Galloway for the visitors. Vernon Villa Sunday were unable to take advantage of the top two sharing the points as they were held by the same score line by Rempstone who ad Pete Saunders levelling Liam Evans' goal for the hosts. A couple from Dave Warden returned Bulwell Rangers to winning ways with a 2-0 success over Crusader, whilst New Fairham eased themselves nearer to safety, as Martin Radmall and Richard Colebrook each scored in the 2-1 win over Portland Arms HH, for whom Matt Walsh hit the net.

Premier 1 A series of comedy moments cost Rileys any chance of victory in Sneinton. So red noses for Malc Marriott, Lee Thorpe, Andy Leese, Colin Wilson and Martin Lovett, though quality players all had golden opportunities to close their frames out. But with nothing riding on the game concentration was at a low point for the curry house bound Rileys boys; Dale Mayes ran slightly out of position and consequently went in off whilst potting the black against county and ex-England star Lee Howitt. Interleague captain Lee 'Bilko' Thorpe and Colin 'monk' Wilson carried on the birthday present theme both rattling their last balls with perfect position on black. The under-strength (if you can count 7 county players as under-strength!) Spot on boys took their gifts well. Man of the match for Rileys was Olly 'B' Brooks winning both his singles and pairs, closely followed by Chris Taylor who's best shot ever (laying a snooker) averted famine and flood and he will be surely recognised in the Queens birthday honours. In the other matches Park Tavern A had a gimme 9-3 against Spot On Sneinton, while Masters just managed to scrape second spot above PTA with a 7-5 win over Royal Oak. Premier 2 With all major league positions already decided in premier 2 all fixtures were more just a wind down and practice for the Summer season. Sherwood SC heaped a little more miser on the Friar Tuck who missed out on top spot last week as they cruised to an 8-4 home win. Sun Valley kept the Gregory rooted to the foot of the table with a 7-5 home win Premier 3 In the fixture of the day Hubble Bar needing just a point from their last match finished the season in style with a 7-5 victory over title challengers Sherwood SC. A great result for Hubble Bar who sadly are going to drop down to an old rules next season. Sun Valley ladies almost scooped their first win of the season away to Basford Hall Miners Welfare. At 6-5 up the ladies had to concede the final leg as they were a player short. Lady Bay had a solid 8-4 home win against the Beacon, who have hit a spell of bad form recently. To advertise call 0115 9656366 Spot On Watnall B continued their 2009 title winning campaign when their merry band of Nomads travelled to Arnold to defeat the newly merged Balfour/Cons Club. Despite the obvious gulf in class between the teams, it was far from straightforward for Mac's knives but his blushes were spared when, at 3-1 down, his Calverton & Arnold Interleague stars, displaying skills and experience that could only have been gleaned from playing with their Interleague captain, came to the rescue. Soprano Sanderson, so named, after his larynx never fully developed like a normal man's during puberty, usually renowned for his ball and cue chucking antics, let his pool do the talking this week and started the comeback with wins in both his singles and pairs. This was followed up by yet another win for the unlikeliest of pool players, Des Dymock, who's odds for the Averages Title have now been slashed to 2500/1 and the win was finally sealed by Spot On's Player of the Season so far, Simon Thompson, fresh from his Vic Leaper Tournament semi final exploits, which saw Captain Mac set sail for the far reaches of Nottinghamshire with a relieved smile on his face. Cherry Tree A moved up to second after a convincing win at relegation threatened Ex Service Club, where only Ian Day could win a singles leg for the home team and that only against County Junior strict disciplinarian, Shrek Fewkes. Tony Wyatt made his long awaited debut under the new regime and showed his team just what they had been missing with a lucky, sorry, magnificent win over Brian Buckels and this was followed by Meat Loaf lookalike, Kev Burbidge apparently gaining his only win of the campaign so far. Ian Owen continued his fine start to the season to move top of the Averages and claimed afterwards “I'll show my tanned backside in Netherfield Square if I don't win them this season!” . . . Indeed! Meanwhile, top of the table, Victory Club travelled to the daffodil covered streets of Lowdham to take on bottom of the table, Railway Volunteers . . . and almost caused an upset by running the relegation threatened outfit closer than expected. (This may seem a little nonsensical to the uninitiated). In a topsy-turvy game, Victory Club's resident women's libber beat Tosh in the first leg, 100% man, Garry Sherwood and new superstar, Dale Mayes restored order with some classy play only to see their work slightly undone as Lee Grant beat the Vol's chuckaway leg and Chris Stapleton fired in a simple 8-baller. Back came Andy Leese with his own 8-baller but then Rileys head chef Colin Wilson stepped up to restore their lead. At this point Captain Beleaguered had seen enough and so unleashed his big-guns and wins for Trev Anderson, Curtis Bradley and Martin Lovett in the pairs, followed up with a Lovenest win in singles got the Lowdham minnows to the brink. Up stepped 8-Ball King, Matt Fell to try to salvage a point but he was no match for the Vol's in-form captain and the Vol storm up to fourth. In Division Two, Cherry Tree B entertained The Longbow, where bottom of the averages favourite, Andy “Behind The Bar” Hayes got his campaign back on track after a terrible lag allowed veteran Mick Drury to fire in a superb 8-baller. It was, however more of a consolation for the Arnold outfit, for whom Martin's far more skilful brother Graham continues to perform well, as the Calverton boys, aided by yet another win for Dave “Richo” Richards, sealed a comfortable win to ease their way into the promotion race. Calverton Miners Welfare were no match for the might of Major Oak and despite Danny McPhilbin moving top of the Averages and a first singles win for veteran, Ken Widdowson,

yet more defeats for Daniel Skinney and Dougal McDougal saw Major Oak take an easy win. Wins for Claire Moore and Malcolm Cropley see them above ex County A star Matt Coates in the race for the Averages title. True Hucknall flag-flyers, Royal Oak continued their awesome start to the their first season with a hard fought win over a luckless Carlton Liberal Club, who according to their captain, Big San, could have won 9-0. Rich Harrison, with two wins, took the Man of the Match award and should claim the prize-money from League Secretary, Alan Gregory. Report by Trevor Chambers - League Tables over page
CITY LEISURE POOL LEAGUE - BURNABY TAKE REVENGE! On Thursday 19th March we saw the league champions, Queen Adelide, and league runners up, Colonel Burnaby, go head to head once again in the K O Cup Final. After a 7-1 loss to the Queen Adelaide last week, Colonel Burnaby went on to take revenge with a 4-1 win. Experienced L Hudson (CB) took the first leg, but I Speak (QA) levelled it up at 1-1, Col Burnaby then played "Chip Shop George" who "battered" his opponent to go 2-1 up, it was to get worse for the Addy when "dangerous"Brian Clarke took control of the fourth leg and put their team 3-1 up, sp with all to play for in the fifth leg Col Burnaby sent out singles runner up, J Camara, who approched the table in a "John Wayne" strut, and after a show down with his opponent, he came out all guns blazing to take the 4-1 victory to the Col Burnaby and to complete the K O Cup win. Well done both teams. Thank you to all teams for a great winter 08/09 season, Thank you to the Gladstone Liberal Club for hosting the K O Cup Final and presentation night and Thank you to Majestic Trophies for the wonderful trophies you supplied for us. DIVISION 1 BCI Snooker Centre 'A' ensured Arnold Civil Defence 'A' must wait at least another week before they're officially crowned Nazareth House Snooker League Champions after a solid 6-2 victory over Pegasus Snooker Club. The match was won at Pegasus where BCI routed a weakened Pegasus home leg. Pegasus's Jamie Mathers put up a good fight against Wayne Martin but a run of 42 from the BCI captain saw him over the line. The impressive Neil Elliott didn't miss much and ran out a comfortable winner against Steve Booth to put BCI two up. Danny Knowles started brightly in his frame but BCI's experienced Sam Haugh ensured there would be no debut win for the Pegasus player who was unlucky to go in-off on the pink. Martin & Elliott then completed an excellent 4-0 away leg win with victory in the doubles against the Pegasus pairing of Mathers & Booth. At Bulwell, Danny Castel-Nuovo tasted defeat for the first time as BCI's talented Jason Bettridge ran out a comfortable winner. Mike Langdon levelled for Pegasus with a good victory over Steve Coleman before the match between

Eric Towle and Hanson Stowe finished with a dramatic respotted black. BCI's Stowe, trailing by 25 points, managed to pot all the remaining colours to force the re-spot before finally sinking the black to complete a great fight-back. Perhaps one plus point Pegasus can take from the match was a first victory for the fledgling partnership of Langdon and Castel-Nuovo in the doubles. For the first time both players appeared in tandem with each other's game and ran out healthy 40 point winners against tough opponents in Bettridge and Coleman to ensure the leg would be drawn. Stadium Leisure finally made sure that their position in the endof-season play-offs was a certainty with a great 5-3 win against Cotgrave Welfare, a result that also condemned the losers to relegation. At Stadium, there were wins for Matt Ellis and Ross Wilkin in the singles, however Pete Gormley suffered a defeat. Ellis and Wilkin lost in the pairs, resulting in a good 2-2 away draw for Cotgrave. At Cotgrave, Daniel Di Folco potted the pink and black to force a re-spot in his frame against Anthony McMahon. Di Folco then potted an excellent black for an impressive win. Bob Walker played out a scrappy frame against Harry Briody, but it was Walker who came out on top, winning on the black. Steve Butler opened up a commanding lead against John Cyrek, however Cyrek laid a superb snooker which Butler repeatedly failed to escape from leaving freeballs each time. This almost levelled the scores but Butler was eventually able to pull fifteen points ahead with just blue, pink and black remaining. Cyrek then went for a long blue which rattled the jaws and amazingly failed to drop. Cyrek was a true gentleman as he called a foul on himself. He had touched the pink accidentally and nobody, including the referee had noticed. It was a fine act of sportsmanship by the Cotgrave captain and the foul left him needing snookers. Butler potted a good blue and pink to seal victory. Walker and Di Folco put up a brave fight in the pairs against Billy Johnson and Anthony McMahon. They recovered from needing two snookers but just lost out on the colours. DIVISION 2 Congratulations to Sherwood Social Club who are now officially champions of division 2 after drawing 4-4 with their title rivals Mapperley Community Centre. At Sherwood, Lee Crombie beat Don Merry 48-41, Brendan Murtagh lost to Andy Carnell 32-64 and Ross Scarborough beat Chris Starr 69-26. The pairs frame took an incredible 1 hour and 10 minutes to complete, but the Mapperley pair of Starr and Merry were eventually victorious over Crombie and Murtagh 38-58. At Mapperley, there were wins for Chris Wright and Geoff Merry but Doug Bough suffered a defeat, as did Merry and Starr in the pairs.

www.ballsmania.net BEESTON CHILWELL & DISTRICT DARTS - BOAT & HORSES TAKE THE TITLE! LADIES INDEPENDENT: In an incredible twist of fate the season finale took an overall change at the top as Birchover lost out to the Hop Pole 5-2 pushing them into second slot. Boat & Horses caught the Queens on the hop as they struggled with double trouble all the way giving the Boat & Horses a 7-0 victory and the league championship. A brilliant season from ALL the ladies, very well played. Still to come though is the Cup Final at the Jaguar which is an all Bilborough affair with the Birchover versus the Pelican and the Ladies high score at the Boat and Horses next week. MEN'S: The league championship has been secured by the Boat & Horses A who have played formidably well this season and are 6 points clear with just one match to go. Second slot is a two horse race between the Boat and the Queens, which will be decided next week. Division B sees a real cliff hanger ending as both the Nook and the Chequers are at the top on 18 points and it will be the final match next week which decides the winner and runners up as both teams face off in a head to head match
NOTTINGHAM CENTRAL DARTS -PRIDE OF ERIN TAKE TITLE LADIES: With just two matches left Strelley and Clifton Bridge battle it out for league champions runners up with the title already taken by Pride of Erin. Meanwhile division B sees Nuthall and Park Tavern still battling each other for the title and both face each other this week in the penultimate match. MIXED: After the brilliant face off last week from Nuthall and Madhouse in division A , division B sees a completely different scenario as they play this weeks seasons finale with the title already taken by th Shed and Querneby coming up second. Next week sees the pair's final at the March Hare. (31st March) MEN'S: With just two matches left in the Men's it could be a close call for the
Championship[ title as Beechdale and Queens battle it out. Queens have the advantage of a game in hand and a stronger leg difference which could leave them sitting pretty at the top, or could it? Division B has all top three teams in with a chance although favourite is the Lion with the stronger leg difference. Birchover and Madhouse too, are separated by leg difference and all it takes is one slip like the Lion did last week, to throw it wide open Report by Paul Lacey

Market Rasen 45 Mellish RFC 7 This weekend saw local side Mellish RFC travel to Market Rasen to play in the Final of the Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire Cup final, having ended Rasens un-defeated league record this season in last week's fixture. Mellish knew they were in for a tough game. They started as strongly and as powerful as usual with awesome forward play, driving in units and rolling mauls putting pressure on the Rasen defence. Penalties cost Mellish and they were put back in there 22 from the resulting kicks after Mellish had put themselves in good attacking positions. Rasen pressure led to a penalty being given away within kicking range which the Rasen Fly-Half slotted over. Mellish then lost their valuable number 8, Ryan Lewis to the sin-bin and Rasen used the one man advantage to increase their lead. At half-time Mellish made changes and put the pressure back on Rasen, keeping them in their half, again penalties led to Mellish losing ground and again Rasen took the point by going for the posts. Mellish then came back strongly and through the forwards scored, keeping the ball tight and pushing their way over the line with their powerful, athletic pack for a c o n v e r t e d t r y. Disaster struck with Mellish losing their play maker number

10, Kris Walden to a red card, and with 10 minutes to go Rasen threw everything they had at the Mellish outfit who defended well only to concede 7 more points. A disappointing loss for the away team but nothing to be taken away from the Mellish lads for a good cup run beat team from 3 counties to take runners up position and signs of good things to come for next season. Let's hope that the run in the cup follows through to the end of the season and into this week's game against Oakham. Come up and support your local team and see some great Rugby being played with the end of the season near Mellish RFC: Andy Fretwell, Simon Jones, Wayne Henson, Dave Mason (C), Andy Watts, Chris Mellish, Ryan Lewis, Simon Bunton, Dan Mclean, Kris Walden, Melbourne Weir, Aaron Myers, Paul Linney, Andy Bray, Alex Bratley. Substitutes – Matt Williams, Sam Harris, Matt Street, Tim Friend, Phil Denman
continued from the back page for Leeds to snatch the win. It was desperately disappointing, and the smiles on the faces in the Leeds camp hid their embarrassment. They knew only too well they had got out of jail. But having lost their last two league games in their bid for an immediate return to the Premiership, their sheer determination and refusal to give in got its reward. For Nottingham though, they still have a top four finish to aim for. That could bring them a bonus next season if the proposed Anglo-Welsh cup goes ahead, with the top four side in Division One invited to join the Premiership clubs and the top Welsh sides in a new competition. They will hope to take a big step towards that top four finish this weekend when they travel to Rotherham.

The louder you roar... the bigger the score! Coventry (3-2). The quarter-final match-ups are now known. GMB Panthers are at home to Manchester on Saturday (March 28th - tickets now on sale) and in Altrincham the next night. Sheffield take on Edinburgh, its Cardiff versus Belfast and Newcastle versus Coventry Nottingham Panthers 4 Belfast Giants 3 In a game which was followed by Part One of this year's club awards the GMB Panthers claimed the points with a come-from-behind victory over the new Challenge Cup holders. There was no sign of a Belfast hangover following their Tuesday night cup success and they ended the first period 1-3 up thanks to two in 35 seconds from captain Awada after Cheverie opened the scoring and David Clarke rattled in his first goal since returning from injury (powerplay) to equalise. The hits finally started coming in the second and Danny Meyers jumped into the play to get one back in the second and then Kevin Bergin was between the hash marks to score
a powerplay equaliser. The only goal of the third period saw Brendan Cook fire home top shelf for the game-winner and the GMB Panthers held on despite a string of penalties against them late in the game, the last five seconds of which saw the visitors with their keeper pulled skating six against three to no avail with Bruce Richardson winning the vital draw and clearing the puck down the ice to seal the win (43).Later Bruce was named Most Entertaining Player of the Year in a fans poll and the Supporters Club Fans Player of the Year award went to Johan Molin. All the players took part in the first part of the awards for this season, receiving special mementos from Andy Worth of the GMB, then the two awards voted for by fans were handed out. The club scoring race is still tight and that award and other main awards will be presented at the new Sponsors Disco, where shirt presentations will be made to the players' Silver and Gold sponsors. Splitting the awards in two like this allows us to keep the fans invloved and at the same time allows us a chance to thank the ever growing army of sponsors.

Advertise in BallsMania Call 0115 965 6366 or info@ballsmania.net In introduction, my name is Paul Wharmsby, a member of the Professional Golfers Association for almost 25 years now - I know I bet you thought I was only 25 from the photo! I am pleased to join the team at BallsMania offering course reviews, coaching tips, stories from my journeys around the world, train the brain. Everything you need to know if you are just starting to think about taking-up golf to your ardent pro! I thought I would kick off my reviews with the best kept secret in Mansfield, my own place, The Golf Lounge to the rear of Il Rosso bar on Nottingham Road. Imagine playing The Belfry, Pebble Beach, Pinehurst, St. Andrews, Valderrama or Valhalla here in Mansfield (yes Mansfield) over a beer and a bite to eat and its indoors ? Well you can today!! The Golf Lounge houses a state-ofThe Golf Lounge - Nottingham Road, the-art indoor golf simulator on which youMansfield can play a round of golf on over 35 courses from around the world. How does it work I hear you say? The concept is easy: No
gimmicks, with your own clubs and balls (equipment can be provided) you stand on a mat similar to a driving range, with a overhead projector casting a image of your shot onto a huge canvas screen. Whilst hitting your ball it passes through 3000 sensors which calculate side spin, trajectory and speed for the distance, giving you a representation of your shot. There are also different graded areas for the rough, deep rough and bunker adding to the realism. What about chipping and putting you may ask yourself? Ok, so that's the tricky part but the computer offers a 'gimmie' range of either 6,9 or 12 feet, basically get it inside the distance and after adding a shot to your score, off you go to the next hole. You can always hole it and save a shot. That's about it; it's as easy as that! For all the budding Tiger Woods and Lee Westwood's out there, I am starting a Junior Academy in April 2009, six one hour sessions only £29.95 per junior. I am only having a maximum of six on each course so that each individual receives the correct amount of coaching - the correct way to do it, not 30 to a group! Left and right handed equipment can be provided if you don't have any. So book now or contact me for more details on any of the below. Prices and Bookings - available 7 days a week from 10.00am till 10.00pm with waitress service for all your drinks and food from Il Rosso bar. Hints and Tips - If you have any questions regarding your golf swing or courses in the county you would like reviewing, please do not hesitate to contact me golf@ballsmania.net Contact - 07762 431628 or info@thegolflounge.net Next Week - Through the help of my nemesis Andrew Hughes Esq, we shall look into some of the psychological strains that affect golfers every weekend.
