To play in our new 5-a-side league
Forest fans spent the week tearing off fingernails and daydreaming anxiously about this one. In the end, rather encouragingly, it was a straightforward three points against a Coventry side with a wavering attention span. The first half was a sorry affair, played at the lethargic tempo of an end-of-season obligation. In the visitors' case that was forgivable, but from Forest it was cause for concern. Coventry forced a series of half chances as Forest sat deep and struggled to bring Blackstock and Garner into the game. If Billy Davies had asked his side to be patient and not panic, he got more than he bargained for. One low cross whistled inches past the toe of a Coventry forward, another caused chaos in the box after Coventry salvaged a loose ball that had been rolling out of play. The referee, meanwhile, seemed to be awarding every split decision in Coventry's favour. A familiar story. Perhaps the recent spate of dishonourable referees says more about our hysterical fear of relegation than it does the standard of officials? Forest stood firm and finished the half with a more determined energy. But it wasn't enough to douse the Report by Alex Campbell

half-time explosion from Billy Davies. The second half began in a vein more fitting of the day's importance, and within only two minutes Coventry had buckled. Blackstock turned sharply in the box and beautifully picked out the run of an unmarked James Perch who calmly notched. Cue manic scenes, followed briskly by 27,000 sighs of relief. Forest came out of their shells after that and Coventry, dreaming of the Maldives, offered little resilience. Chris Cohen's trademark vigour forced him one-on-one, only to be denied spectacularly by the Coventry keeper. Nerves only frayed in the final minutes of stoppage time as a Coventry forward lashed the ball into a crowded box. Paul Smith smothered the danger, and Forest fans left more certain than ever that Billy Davies will keep the club afloat. One win from the final two games would probably do it, but there's a morbid sense of inevitability about the final game against Southampton having a substantial impact. For now Forest's future remains uncertain. But it looks a lot pinker than it eight days ago. Ratings: Smith – 6.5 – relatively quiet afternoon for the restored number one. Gunter – 8 – another courageous display belying his loan status. Chambers – 7 – one or two shaky moments, but he held firm. Morgan – 8 – another imperious display from a determined Morgan. Perch – 7 – a few question marks in the first half, but he recovered to give a solid display out of position. And score a vital goal. Anderson – 6 – struggled to make an impact as Coventry defenders clustered around his rare runs forward. McGugan – 7 – flashes of excellence from McGugan. His in-game consistency remains the biggest problem. Osbourne – 7.5 – covered a lot of ground across the middle. Cohen – 7.5 – tireless, as always. A vital player during times of needs. Garner – 6.5, Blackstock – 7. Subs: McCleary – 8
met Weston's corner with a powerful header with was arrowing towards goal - with his legs on five minutes. From another corner Weston had a go at goal but Bentley threw his body in the way to ensure the ball didn't advance any further towards the Morecambe goal. County's bright start deserved the early advantage, but they weren't able to take it and Morecambe forced their way into the game by the half hour and earned two corners but Kevin Pilkington was left with little to do other than the occasional clearance. Hunt advanced forwards from the back on thirty and space opened up for the defender to get a shot away, but he dragged his effort wide. Weston spurned a great chance on thirty two minutes with County again getting into the stride. This time a neat ball by Butcher picked out the winger's run, but after cutting inside he blazed over with his right foot. Rene Howe tested Pilkington's reactions soon afterwards but the goalkeeper made a good reaction save at point-blank range, and Rowe dragged a shot wide with another opportunity moments later which turned out to be the final chance of the half. County kicked off the second half and applied the early pressure and Facey saw a low drive saved by Roche at his near post. Pilkington performed heroics on fifty two minutes to deny Twiss when the midfielder was clear on goal. Pilkington remained tall and when Twiss looked to take the ball around him the goalkeeper superbly won the ball with his right leg and Edwards cleared his lines. Weston twice had the beating of his marker down the
Notts County weren't able to put a dent in Morecambe's charge towards the League Two playoffs after a 1-0 defeat at Christie Park this afternoon. Mark Duffy handed the home side all three points on seventy-two minutes to condemn County to a fourth successive defeat. County were denied by Morecambe's Barry Roche on three occasions after falling behind and also saw a Jonathan Forte effort fly just over. But Duffy's close-range finish was enough for Sammy McIllroy's side. Matt Hamshaw failed to recover from an ankle knock in time to start so he was on the bench with County adopting a 4-3-3 formation. Gavin Strachan came in for Hamshaw while Stephen Hunt was handed a start at the heart of the defence in place of the rested Michael Johnson. In their traditional colours County were attacking towards their own fans on the terrace behind one of the goals in the first half. A good move by the Magpies down the left in the first two minutes created an opening for Clapham advancing forwards from left-back but he shot straight at Roche from eighteen yards. The former Forest goalkeeper made a fine save to deny ex-Reds team-mate Thompson - who Report continued on page 6

wings around the hour mark but his crosses couldn't pick out County players in the penalty area. The young winger was having a lively game and after another good run on sixty-eight minutes he blasted over. Pilkington produced the save of the match a minute later when he tipped Hunter's dipping shot over the bar. The ball broke kindly to the midfielder who looked to have got enough on his effort to have drifted the ball over Pilkington, but the goalkeeper got a finger-tip to the ball and turned it behind. But on seventy-two minutes he couldn't keep out Morecambe's half-time substitute Duffy, who slammed home from inside the six-yard box. A cross into the Notts box wasn't cleared sufficiently and the ball fell kindly for Duffy who slotted the ball home beyond the onrushing Pilkington. County responded by bringing Matt Hamshaw off the bench in place of Gavin Strachan with an equaliser in mind and County's No.7 saw a good low effort saved by Roche within a few minutes of his introduction. Roche made another fine save to deny Richard Butcher nine minutes from time after the midfielder ghosted into the box to meet Clapham's cross with a firm header that Roche turned over. The goalkeeper was earning his corn for the home side and he denied Jamie Clapham from the resultant corner because the left-backs deflected shot was destined for the bottom corner. A terrific volley two minutes from time by Forte had 'goal' written all over it, but the ball landed in the netting on the roof of the net with Roche beaten all ends up. It would have been a great way to sign off his loan spell from Scunthorpe United, but it wasn't to be for County.

THE PENSIONERS Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting. Well, for example, the other day my wife and I went into town and went into a shop. We were only in there for about 5 minutes. When we came out, there was a cop writing out a parking ticket. We went up to him and said, 'Come on man, how about giving a senior citizen a break? He ignored us and continued writing the ticket. I called him a Nazi turd. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn tyres. So my wife called him bog-breath. He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more we abused him, the more tickets he wrote. Personally, we didn't care. We came into town by bus on our free bus pass. We try to have a little fun each day now that we're retired. It's important at our age. LITTLE HARRY A teacher asks her class, 'If there are 5 birds sitting on a fence, and you shoot one of them, how many will be left?'. She calls on little Harry... He replies, 'None, they will all fly away with the first gunshot.' The teacher replies, 'The correct answer is 4, but I like your thinking.' Then little Harry says, 'I have a question for YOU Miss Rogers'. There are 3 women sitting on a bench having ice cream: One is delicately licking the sides of the triple scoop of ice cream. The second is gobbling down the top and sucking on the cone. The third is biting off the top of the ice cream. Which one is married?' The teacher, blushing a great deal, replied, 'Well, I suppose the one that's gobbled down the top and sucked the cone.' To which Little Harry replies, 'The correct answer is 'The one with the wedding-ring on, 'but I like your thinking.' THANKS TO MR GRETTON FOR THIS WEEKS SELECTION WHO WINS THE MEAL FOR 4! Non-League Football Simon Bolland, gave the Lincolnshire club a 2-1 win against Blidworth Welfare. The visitors pulled one back through Lee Hole. Second from bottom Kimberley Town lost at Yorkshire Main, the home club winning 4-1. David Mannifield, Dan Jarvis and James Naylor (2) for Yorkshire Main. Nathan Ryan scored a consolation goal for Kimberley. Going back to the Black Dragon Premier Division, bottom club Bulwell Town accounted for Bentley Colliery, winning 2-0 with first half goals by Aaron Rose and Lee Allen. Bulwell are still in bottom position but are now only one point behind Throne Colliery, with a game in hand. Thorne lost by the same score at home against Church Warsop Miners Welfare. Steve McGurk and Gavin Dobbs scoring the goals. East Riding club Hutton Cranswick United enjoyed their day at Kiveton Park, with both Paul Taylor and Mark Davies getting a brace and Callum Bunn also getting on the score sheet, the visitors won 5-1. Steve Beal scored the Kiveton goal. A 19th minute goal by Mark Smith, gave Welbeck Welfare all three points against visitors Thoresby Colliery Welfare, a result that took the home team up to thirteenth place in the table. Carlton Town Reserves now only need one more win to ensure the Abacus Lighting Reserves Supreme Division title, they made 'mincemeat' of Blidworth Welfare Reserves, Steven Cox hit four in their 9-1 win. Heanor Town Reserves remain in second place but third placed Staveley Miners Welfare are now only two points behind the 'Young Lions' with two games in hand. Staveley, who are now the only team that could challenge the leaders, won 3-1 at Dunkirk Reserves. Gavin Christie ands Shaun Jepson scored the goals, that gave Holbrook Miners Welfare Reserves a 2-0 win against Teversal Reserves, a result that ends the visitors outside chances of the title. Home win for Makeover Sports Reserves 3-0 against Forest Town Reserves; Liam Oliver (2) and Shaun Fell for Sports. Radford Reserves also won at home, 3-2 against Shirebrook Town Reserves. Jubilation for the Nottingham team, this result took them above Sutton Town Reserves, who are now in the bottom position. Kieron Ali and Joe Lowe (2) for Radford. Sam Bailey scored both the Shirebrook goals. A priceless goal by Danny Foster gave the Abacus Lighting Premier Division leaders, Southwell City Reserves, a 1-0 win over challengers Kiveton Park Reserves. Yorkshire Main Reserves went second, they won 5-1 at Pinxton Reserves. Steven Newton notched a hat trick for the Yorkshire team. The visitors are four points behind Southwell with a game in hand. Church Warsop Miners Welfare Reserves and Nettleham Reserves shared two goals at 'The Alley'.
EAST MIDLANDS COUNTIES LEAGUE Kirby Muxloe took a giant step towards being crowned inaugural champions of the East Midlands Counties League with their 1-0 defeat of nearest rivals Borrowash Victoria. Jamie Mason bagged the only goal of the game to leave his side seeking just one point from their final two matches to secure the title. Rob Harrison's goal edged Holbrook MW to a 1-0 win at Ibstock United – a victory that keeps up
their slim hopes of snatching the runners-up spot. But there was disappointment at the other end of the table where Bardon Hill's good run came to an abrupt halt as they were beaten 4-1 by Graham St Prims, Brett Adul netting a double to add to strikes from Dave Hind and Phil Carson. That result means Ellistown can still escape the bottom two following their thrilling 3-3 draw at St Andrews. Luke Dawkins, Danny Kitching and Danny Wilson were on target for the visitors with Tom Sansome, Tom Hill and Rich Parry finding the net for the Andrews. Elsewhere, Heanor Town were convincing 3-0 victors over Dunkirk and basement club Blackwell MW fell to Holwell Sports by the same margin. Penalties from Stu Wilson and Ade Adelukin helped Barrow Town to a 4-2 victory at home to Radford while Hinckley Downes scraped through 1-0 at Greenwood Meadows. Finally, Graham Epps was the toast of half of Gedling – scoring the only goal as the Town beat the Miners Welfare. Rolls Royce Leisure 1 Newark Town 3 Town made two changes from their thrashing at the hands of Radcliffe, with Stuart Franks and Dave Issott coming in to replace Mark Blant and the unavailable Gareth Dobb. Newark enjoyed much of the early possession, but the first opportunity of the match fell to the home side, when Scott forced a way through, and hit a low, but tame shot which was well saved by Chris Riley. Apart from this most of the opening chances came for Town, with Chris Self's close range shot deflected over the bar by Ward, being the best of them on 8 minutes. The Blues kept plugging away, although they created good openings, none of them troubled Rolls Royce. On 24 minutes, Rolls Royce had their best chance of the half, when a short header back by Franks was intercepted by Rennicks, whose lob over Riley went just wide of the post. Town had an opportunity themselves just a minute later, when a 40 yard run by Chris Self, allowed him to shoot, only for the ball to be deflected wide by Carthy. the Blues then won a penalty on 32 minutes, when Sam Wilford was brought down by Barracks in the area. Unfortunately, Self's spot kick was comfortably saved by Brady, and was eventually cleared as Sam Wilford followed up. Town did eventually take the lead two minutes later, when Sam Wilford's deep cross found Luke Parsons, who rose unchallenged to head in his fourth goal in four games. Chris Self extended Newark's lead on 36 minutes, when he turned Carthy and drove his shot low into the corner. Town had another chance before half time as Self jinked past 3 defenders, and hit the outside of the post when one on one with Brady. town were caught cold at the start of the second half, when on 52 minutes, a long ball found McShane, who rounded Riley before poking the ball into the back of the net to give the home side hope. The match then entered a quiet phase, with neither side conjuring any noteworthy chances. There was a distinct lack of urgency in Newark's play, with the game having a definite end of season feel to it on this sunny afternoon. The introduction of Mark Blant livened

MAA - SOUTHWELL’S HOPES DASHED AFTER THRASHING BY FC05 !
Any hope of retaining the Premier Division Championship was extinguished for Southwell Amateurs when a shock midweek 4-2 reverse at the hands of Brunts Old Boys was followed by a 7-1 drubbing by third placed title contenders FC05. Two goals adrift at half-time with Wes O' Rourke and Phil Buxton on the mark, Southwell conceded three more to Steve Walker, Nick Westerman and Gary Whitten before striking back through Andy Moss only for O'Rourke's second goal and an own goal to add to their agony. Old Elizabethans' reign at the top of the table, gained as a result of their 4-0 midweek defeat of Beeston OBA, lasted just two 4-0 Keyworth Utd Res days following their 2-0 defeat by Woodborough United who have now 2-0 Bilborough Town snatched the top spot back. The three title contenders, each with three 2-2 Bulwell games remaining are separated by just five points. Added spice to the 0-0 Boots Athletic Res contest is the fact that O.E.s still have to play FC05 as well as the return 1-2 Keyworth Utd Ac'dmy fixture with Woodborough. Meanwhile fifth placed Nottinghamshire completed a straight forward 3-0 defeat of Brunts Old Boys. With only five 4-2 Ruddington V Res 3-1 Calverton MW Ac'dmy points separating the bottom six in the table Dan Bramley's double, together with goals from Jason Jude and Martin Beesley, was a welcome 5-0 Caribbean Cavs Res boost to Monty Hind Old Boys' slender chance of avoiding relegation when they claimed a 4-3 victory over Beeston OBA. With just one win in 4-3 Beeston OBA thirteen league matches County NALGO are also in relegation trouble 3-0 Brunts Old Boys after losing 3-0 to a much improved Wollaton III who have languished at 1-7 FC05 the bottom of the table for most of the season. Their place has been filled 2-0 Old Elizabethans by TVFC who only managed a Tom Scarf reply to three goals from 1-3 Steelers Steelers. 0-3 Wollaton III In Division 1 leaders Crown Inn Selston overcame a shock 8-7 midweek defeat by West Bridgford United by putting paid to second placed 5-0 Bassingfield Nottinghamshire II's chance of claiming the title with a 4-3 victory. Gareth 1-3 Calverton MW'A' Vardy, Garren Haslam and Steven Froggett had scored for Crown before 3-4 Crown Inn Selston a last minute Gary Mayhew penalty clinched the match after Notts had 3-1 Derbyshire Ams II come back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2. Despite defeating Bassingfield 5-0 5-0 EMTEC thanks to a Marek Smith hat-trick and goals from Frazer Higgins and Alex 3-2 Old Elizabethans II Burnett, his 34th of the season, third placed Acorn Athletic still managed 2-2 Radcliffe Oly III to hit the woodwork no fewer than eight times and now remain the only team left to challenge Crown for the title. Derbyshire Amateurs II were undone by a Max Godley double and a Paul 8-3 Chilwell Vipers Glaze strike in a 3-1 defeat by West Bridgford United and now face 0-4 Kirk Hallam S C relegation along with Calverton Miners Welfare 'A' despite Calverton's 32-3 Nuthall Athletic 1 defeat of Beeston AFC II when goals from Steven Brett, James Walters 0-0 Nottinghamshire III and Sam Hilton were answered by Andrew Sidwell. Goals from Tom 1-2 Southwell Ams II Blaney and Danny Whiting for Old Elizabethans II, who are safe from 6-1 Town Mill relegation, proved insufficient when losing 3-2 to Wollaton IV. EMTEC are also safe after recovering well from their poor start to the season although their final match was a 5-0 defeat by Eaton Hall College, whose goals 2-4 Brunts Old Boys came via a double from Pete Best, Chris Daley, Chris Parkes and Adam 0-4 Old Elizabethans Parker, despite their fine midweek victory over Radcliffe Olympic III. 2-5 Wollaton III Meanwhile Olympic fared better on Saturday when sharing four goals with Lady Bay who scored through Andrew Hemsley and Sam Keenan. 8-7 Crown Inn Selston In Division 2, title contenders Nottinghamshire III failed to find the net in a 5-2 Derbyshire Ams II goal-less encounter with bottom team Ravenshead Rangers despite 2-2 Acorn Athletic their 5-3 defeat of Southwell Amateurs II in the Minor Cup Final two days 5-1 EMTEC earlier when Liam Wood, Terry Watson, Michael Sheridan, Ben Dore and Anthony Shannon took their chances. In contrast current leaders 1-3 Nuthall Athletic Broadmeadows hammered Chilwell Vipers 8-3 whilst third placed 0-3 Coronation Southwell Amateurs II pipped Tibshelf Community 2-1. The only other 2-7 Kirk Hallam S C title contenders alongside the top three, Coronation, defeated Town Mill 6-1 thanks to a James Whitmoor hat-trick, a Joe Parker double and a 5-3 Southwell Ama II Danny Thompson goal. Kirk Hallam Social Club defeated Hickling 4-0 whilst Cambridge Knights went down by the odd goal in five to Nuthall Athletic. 1-2 F.C. Sandhurst res were emphatic winners over Cavaliers res, Duffy, Brown, Frost, Ellis and Hill all with one a piece. COMBINATION - GREMIO DOWN & OUT AFTER BESTWOOD GIVE THEM A PASTING! Only three games took place in the premier division this Sunday which means nothing has been decided at the top of the table but at the other end despite having one game remaining Gremio are resigned to relegation after losing their penultimate game 6-1 at home to Bestwood Miners Welfare. Liam Dunston top scored with a brace and he was assisted by James Noble, Jay Tinsley, Troy Dunston and Ashley Williams. Gremio hit back with the last kick of the game through Adam Sanders. R Doherty scored twice and R Groves once as Kimberly MW won 3-1 at Bingham town who replied through a Brent Wilkinson Penalty whilst A Cumming and Scott Pickworth scored for their respective sides as the only other premier division game saw Bear FC complete their season with a 1 all draw at mid table Man in Space. Andy Nicholson came out of goal to convert a penalty and he was assisted in the win by Ricky Lees, Gary Sherwood and Adam Brown. Neil Wilson replied for the home side. Basford Rangers won by the same score line at home to Hamburg 80 courtesy of Adam Henson 2, Ian Leebetter and Rob Edwards, Darren Clayton replied. One. A comfortable 5-0 win over Notts Athletic keeps the pressure on chasing Radcliffe. Radcliffe had a good week beating West Bridgford Albion 7-0 and fellow title chasers Brinsthorpe Rangers 31 on Sunday to overtake Nottingham Law School into second place. Fanzines United late season surge continues beating Linford Nelson 3-0 to go above a sinking Brinsthorpe into fourth spot. West End pulled out of the title race effectively some weeks ago but still pulled off a fine 2-1 win over Freeman & Mitchell – their old rivals from better previous campaigns. Total Reclaims Demolition beat a struggling West Bridgford Albion 4-0-an Albion side demolished 7-0 in mid week and on Sunday fielding only ten players which went down to nine following a red card. It was touch and go whether Arnold Cross Keys kept their unbeaten league record in division 2 as Burton Joyce B put up a superb performance leading 3-2 at half time! Barry Paine with two and four second half goals from sub Paul Stephenson settled the nerves despite losing their keeper to injury in the second half. Fox & Crown cement second place with convincing 7-0 win over Highfield Park Rangers. Gary Denwood completed a fine hat trick. Riverside Moores took full advantage of Clifton Bridge Inn turning up late and with only ten players storming into a three goal lead in the first twenty-three minutes. Bretty Duffy gave Moores a ninth minute lead heading home a fine deep cross. Chris Thompson netted twice to give Moores their three goal start before Inn's final player found Bestwood Lodge and donned his kit. This immediately changed the course of the game as a stroll in the sunshine became a competitive match with Inn scoring early in the second half via the penalty spot to send alarm bells ringing for manager Mark and player David Bell! It was midfielder Bell who scored his sides crucial fourth goal to give some breathing space as Inn promptly pulled another goal back but goals had finished and the scoreline remained 4-2 to Riverside Moores. Fc Grey Mare Olympico recorded a fine 5-3 win over Wheelhouse despite Dean Bensley's hat trick for “House. Chris Mclaughlin with two, Reece Beard and Jason Lawson for Olympico. Top clash in division 3 saw Wollaton Pirates made to work hard for their 100% record to be maintained against Chequers United in 4-2 win. Gammon and Carter for United. Punjab Colts saw their well nigh impossible title dreams evaporate as in form Beeston Athletic held them to 1-1 draw. Sawford nicked a late equaliser for Athletic. Kinoulton Villa move up a place to third after beating Trent Vale 10.Whatnall gave Villa the points with a first half goal which sends Vale to the bottom after Brooks Villa's surprise 2-1 win against Clifton Dynamo. Villa's third win of the season moves them one point over Vale. Top score of the day saw Radcliffe Olympic reserves beat Boots Wednesday 6-1.The ever reliable Ford bagged another hat trick supported by Adams, Walker and Hegarty. In division 4 Wollaton Pirates and Clifton Dynamo Reserves met again following the recent seven goal thriller but it was Pirates who ran out winners – 6-1. Langford gave Clifton the lead despatching a failed clearance back in to the net after early pressure. Scott Hardy then proceeded to take control converting a penalty after he had been fouled to make it 1-1 at half time. In a superior second half performance Pirates and Hardy rattled in another three goals to go 4-1 up through crisp finishing. Thirty goal man Mark Jordan nodded in one of easiest goal of the season before a superb volleyed own goal made the final score 6-1 to Pirates. GMB did the double header double over Caythorpe winning 2-0 and 4-2. Attsu drew 2-2 with Real Bulwell. Report by Adrian Ford
Clifton Villa are also in with a chance and enhanced their goal difference following a thumping 9-3 victory over Radford Park Rangers. At the other end of the table, Nottm WI Cavaliers suffered a 5-3 reverse against Arnold FC, with Lee Allen hitting two, Martin Holt, Vladamir Farrell and Damien Powell one each for the victors and Tyrone Burton, two and Rueben Thomas one for the vanquished. Jamie Hobbs' effort for Nottm Alumni was not enough to stave off defeat against Trentside, for whom Tyrone Francis and Leon Aitken struck the deciding goals. The last two games in Division one were purely academic but George Street lifted themselves to fourth place with two goals from Kane Matthews and one apiece for Josh Haskey and Danny Taylor in their 4-0 win over FC Clobber. BTSC literally made hay whilst the sun shone, by hitting eight without reply against Clifton Centrals through a hat trick from Adam Chenery, two each by Dan Dennis and Nick Jones and one from Liam Doyle to bring their season to a close. With Sims Metal already crowned champions of Division One, it was left to the chasers to covet runners-up spot. Bulwell Rangers put themselves in prime position as David Warden struck a pair, supplemented by strikes from John Haynes, Chris Bell, Scott Litchfield and Darren Spencer in the 6-2 win at Rempstone, for whom Sam Roberts and Jim Whitchurch responded. Jason Wynne and Andrew Wright hit Lenton Villa's last goals of the season as they beat Nottm Rangers 2-0, whilst David Dyer, Steve Belcher, Chris Baker-Beale and Ian Millington netted for Portland Arms as they overcame Crusader 4-2 with Chris Kemp and Mark Stratford replying. CALVERTON & ARNOLD DISTRICT POOL LEAGUE -THE CHERRY TAKE THE CUP! KO Cup week brought us the plum tie of League title favourites Cherry Tree at home to the beleaguered Tantric Trevs' Railway team, early exchanges saw Tony and Guy,( fresh off his sick bed defying doctors who advised him never to attempt an 8 baller again), tricking much travelled (200 mile round trip) Gary Sherwood to go easy on the lag and gift Tony the break, after which he duly cleared up for a man of the match 8 baller! calls for a drug test were dismissed by Tree captain “No nose” Taylor Tree took a slim 3-2 league after Railways Crazy Mayes with 2 visits in hand omitted to hit the required cushion, oh dear oh dear Corey Beckham took his chance well and was voted “best dressed man” for the 8th time in a row, however the Railway came steaming back with Farmer Leese and his butler Martin Lovenest performing well to take a 4-3 lead, Cherry then clinched the 8th leg to level and it was down to Ex Naafi Snooker star Tiger Wyatt to finish off old Tosh world rules expert 2nd to none to end Railways Cup campaign result 5-4. Hucknall new boys Royal Oak crushed Cherry B 5-3 to maintain their promising season, they await the next round draw with relish, “bring on the big boys” was the battle cry from Mick Vernon. Major Oak easily disposed of Carlton Lib 5-2 with Harry Lowe declaring we are building a team for the future, promotion and a title challenge next season if i can hang onto Matt Coates. NOTTINGHAM & NOTTS INSTITUTES ASSOCIATION SNOOKER - CARLTON PIP BCI ‘E’ WHILE SHERWOOD THRASH BCI ‘B’! KNOCKOUT CUP FINAL Carlton LC bt BCI 'E' KNOCKOUT PLATE FINAL Sherwood SC 'A' bt BCI 'B' KNOCKOUT CUP FINAL Carlton Liberal Club beat BCI Snooker Centre 'E' by just 22 points in a closely contested final. Daniel Di Folco was up against Jon Mason in the first frame and it was Mason who took the initiative, but Di Folco fought back well. Both players had small 16-17 breaks to try to pull ahead. It was Mason however that made the breakthrough pulling 21 points clear with three balls remaining. Di Folco, realising he couldn't win the frame, took the last three colours to restrict BCI's lead to just three points. In frame two Bob Walker lost by just one point to Kwok Yip. It was a fabulous exhibition of snooker from both players. Yip, who was playing some terrific safety, managed to pull well ahead. Walker wasn't having any luck at all but he managed to mount a small comeback, only for Yip to move 23 points in front with four balls remaining. Walker tried in vain for snookers but eventually decided to take what points he could. He managed to take brown to black in two visits to ensure that BCI's lead was only four points going into frame three. Bob Wright took on Sam Haugh in another terrific frame. Wright started well, racing into a 36 point lead but a mistake let Haugh in for a well taken 27 break. Haugh then started playing well and moved into a small lead with the pink and black left. Haugh potted the pink but he left Wright an easy black and BCI led by only 8 points going into the final frame. After three amazingly close frames the fourth saw Andy Ball play Wong Yip and Ball was always ahead and playing well against an opponent he had beaten the previous week. Yip was trying all he could to peg the points back, but Ball kept on scoring. The frame culminated with Ball potting a terrific long pink to take frame and match for Carlton.

KNOCKOUT PLATE FINAL Sherwood Social Club 'A' ran out easy winners against BCI Snooker Centre 'B' despite conceding 49 points to the Bulwell side. Lee Crombie was up against Neil Elliott in frame one and it was a great frame with some good play from both players. Elliott got off to a fantastic start going some 30 points up with mini breaks of 14 and 16 but he then proceeded to give away 11 points in fouls. A nice 24 break from Crombie and another foul on the black by Elliott levelled the scores and Crombie finished the frame well to win by 29 points. Jason Turner then had an easy 78-38 win against Toby Irons who failed to find his form. After deducting the handicap, Sherwood were now 20 points ahead at the halfway stage. The third frame between Ant Scarbrough and Mick Salmon was not a classic by any means with both players struggling to find any form. Salmon very quickly found himself a long way behind but he tried his best to pull some points back. It all seemed in vain though and to everyone's surprise he conceded the frame with 13 points still left on the table. This gave Sherwood a 66 point advantage going into the final frame between Brendan Murtagh and Jeff Allen. The frame pretty much followed the same pattern as the previous one with both players getting off to a very slow start with loads of safety to begin with and some bad misses. Knowing he had an uphill task, Allen desperately tried to get the points he needed to win the match for his team, but he soon realised that he was running out of balls and Murtagh put the match beyond his reach with some solid potting. The final score was Sherwood 285, BCI 191. Report by Robert Wright and James Robinson
NAZARETH HOUSE SNOOKER LEAGUE - AFTER 380 ROUNDS OF SNOOKER .....IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THIS! match and hope that Wayne Martin fails to beat Lee Crombie to secure the title. A win for table topping Hussain would shut the door on both his title rivals and would see the Peoples Hall man victorious. Wayne Martin who is currently in 2nd spot level on points with Hussain but with an inferior frame difference needs to win and hope for either a draw or a Spencer win. In the First Division things are just as tight but a little more straight forward. Neil Elliott knows that a win against Malc Belshaw will see him lift the title but should he slip up and either draw or lose he will open the door for Mike Langdon. There is just one match left to play in the Second Division but what a match, with three different outcomes possible! Eric Towle who is currently third knows he needs to beat Spider 4-0 to win the division via the head-to-head rule from Shaun Parkinson. A 3-1 win for Towle would see him miss out on frame difference to Parkinson whilst Spider Wilkinson knows that either a draw or win would be good enough to see him win the league. Fine Victory Sees Lenton Pair Through To Pairs Final. Knockout Competitions A superb two nil victory saw Lenton's Matt Savage & Adam Goodall reach this years Handicap Pairs Final at the expense of BCI's Jonathan Mason & Kwok Yip. They will now meet Steve Butler & Matt Ellis from Stadium Leisure to decide this year's competition. Final of the Singles Championship – 16 April 2009 Pegasus Snooker Club was the venue for the best of seven frame final of the Notts Amateur Snooker Championship between BCI Snooker Centre's Keith Holgate and Arnold Civil Defence's John Fountain. Holgate got off to a good start, winning the opening frame 70-14. In frame two Holgate really started to flow, making an excellent 58 break to seal an 81-6 win. Fountain was unable to settle but his game improved in frame three as he made things much tougher for his opponent. Nevertheless, Holgate played some solid snooker to take a tight frame 51-35 and go 3-0 up. Fountain was now desparate to get a frame on the board and he got off to a steady start in frame four. Unfortunately for Fountain Holgate continued to produce the goods and he knocked in a quality 28 break to take the frame and lift the trophy for a third time. Keith Holgate 4-0 John Fountain

BRAVE OUTLAWS FAIL TO STOP BUFFALO Rugby STAMPEED! Report continued over page
Nottingham Outlaws traveled to Leeds on Sunday with the daunting prospect of playing Bramley Buffaloes, a team that has finished at the top of the Co-operative Rugby League National Conference for the last 5 years. In a bruising encounter the Outlaws put up a brave fight against their illustrious opponents but they ultimately succumbed to the greater fire-power of their Yorkshire rivals, losing 38-20 in a highly-entertaining game. Despite the defeat, the Outlaws performed with great credit against a team who look "nailed-on" certainties to once again finish at the top of the pile in 2009. Indeed they more than rattled their opponents for long periods of the game, delighting their on-looking coach Martin Crick who added "I am very pleased with the teams performance today, we more than held our own for long periods against a team that have dominated

this division. We made a few errors at the opening stages of both halves and a team like Bramley will punish you for it. However, we have now shown me that we can mix it with the best team in the division and we will come away from this defeat a whole lot stronger" The Outlaws went into the match sporting a number of changes. The regular Lewis/Calland half back combination was broken as regular scrum half Jimmy Lewis was unnavailable so the versatile Rob Brown was switched to emergency half back cover. Other changes saw the Loughborough quartet of Perry, Edwards, Hall and Thomas return to the squad after a spell away on international duty. From the kick-off the re-shuffled Outlaws struggled to settle in the high-tempo opening exchanges and they found themselves under pressure virtually straight from the start. The line-speed and aggression of the Buffaloes defence seemed to knock the confidence of the Outlaws players and as a consequence of this they began to lose possession early in their tackle count. A team as strong and well drilled as Bramley does not need a second invitation and they immediately took control of the opening phases of the game! With a virtual monopoly of possession the Buffaloes outfit swept into a 12-0 lead in as many minutes as they punished the Outlaws mistakes with 2 well taken tries and a heavy defeat looked a distinct possibility as the Buffaloes began to turn up the heat on the rattled visitors! With the Outlaws desperately searching for inspiration they once again turned to their pack for salvation. The forwards heeded the call and as the half unfolded they began to get to grips with their larger, more-physical opponents. Leading the way were regulars Strachan, Millward and Waldram who took the ball up into the heart of the Bramley pack and eventually their bravery began to pay off as they steadied the ship and, more importantly, they plugged some of the leaking holes in the defence. As the Outlaws slowly began to get to grips with the pace and intensity of the match they started to make yardage and turn the tide. Wily coach Martin Crick sensed the Outlaws were in the ascendancy and immediately introduced Si Perry and Steve Hall from the bench to add some additional pace and Midlands 2 East 1 2 Ampthill 18, Scunthorpe 19 3 Derby 24, Market Bosworth 11 4 Dunstablians 25, Mansfield 12 5 Newark 12, Matlock 17 6 Paviors 58, Leighton Buzzard 10 7 8 Wellingborough 14, Syston 45 9 Midlands 3 East (N) 10 Ashbourne 13, Spalding 31 11 Coalville 100, Grimsby 12 12 Lincoln 10, Melton Mowbray 36 Loughborough 31, B'well Mannerians 26 1 2 Sleaford 5, Ilkeston 53 3 West Bridgford 13, Nottm Moderns 32 4 Midlands 4 East (N) 5 6 Amber Valley 33, Southwell 10 7 Ashby 12, Mellish 15 8 Barton & District 29, Kesteven 28 9 Belgrave 77, Boston 0 10 Market Rasen & Louth 83, Ashfield 7 11 Oakham 20, Nottingham Casuals 12 12

fresh lega to the Outlaws attack. The switch-around paid dividends almost straight away as The Outlaws hit back with 2 quick-fire tries. First over the white-wash was Myles Rutherford who charged over the line after Si Perry had opened up the Bramley defence with a barnstorming run and within 2 minutes the resurgent Outlaws scored again. This time Paul Calland left the home defence flat-footed as he threw two outrageous dummies to scythe open the Bramley rearguard and at 12-10 the Outlaws were back in the game and on the ascendancy! A clearly-rattled home team and its supporters could not believe how a game that seemed in the bag at the mid-way stage of the first stanza was in the process of slipping away from them. However, they were somewhat relieved when the referee awarded the Buffaloes a rather harsh penalty in injury time that saw them add another 2 points to their score to make it 14-10 as the referee drew the first half to a close. At half-time Coach Martin Crick impressed the need to control the opening exchanges of the second half, but alas the Buffaloes had other ideas and the home team started the second half with something of a stampede! Indeed, the first 15 minutes of the second half proved disastrous for the Outlaws as they made error after error to gift field position and possession to the Buffaloes. The champions were not slow to capitalise and the home team gave something of a masterclass in clinical finishing as they scored no fewer than 4 unanswered tries in a devastating opening spell that saw them race into to a 38-10 lead. With only 60 minutes showing on the clock a 50 point plus drubbing looked to be well and truly on the cards! To their credit, the Outlaws once again fought back bravely and shocked their opponents as they again took the game to the Buffaloes. Once again, a sterling effort by the Outlaws pack began to turn the tables and put pressure on a rapidly tiring Bramley outfit. Their efforts were soon rewarded with a Ben Radford try in the corner after a superb break by pacey centre Tom Tsang carved open the Bramley defence. Calland converted with a superb touchline kick and the Outlaws inched back even closer when Steve Hall charged over after great work by

Si Perry again opened up the Bramley defence. This time Calland just failed to add the extras but the Outlaws had now closed the gap to 38-20 with 10 minutes to play. With the clock ticking down, the Outlaws almost grabbed another try as winger Martin Edwards went on a blockbusting surge down the line only to be hauled down by desperate defence that resulted in the Outlaws winger leaving the field with a broken arm. Then, within minutes Adam Millward capped a man-of-the match display with a magnificent 60 yard solo run but the Staffordshire hit man was again hauled down just short of the line as the referee blew for the end of the match. As the bruised and battered Outlaws players trudged from the field they reflected on the poor opening-spells at the start of both halves that had effectively cost them the game. However, despite the defeat, there were plenty of positives to take from the match. The Outlaws players had shown that they could more than hold their own against the best team in the division and with a little more composure they will be more than a match for the majority of teams in the league!

Dan Montagu & Joe Duffey receiving standing ovations Nottingham 55 Coventry 0 Nottingham Rugby signed off the 2008/9 season at Meadow Lane in style with an emphatic eight try victory against Midlands' rivals Coventry. On a glorious day for rugby, the Green and Whites produced possibly their best first half performance of the season to blow Coventry away and secure the bonus point victory. David Jackson scored 20 points (try, penalty and six conversions) to keep him in the race to become National Division One's top points scorer this season. The other seven tries came from Alex Dodge, Nic Rouse, Jack Cobden, Chris Pilgrim (2) and one each for the departing Joe Duffey and Dan Montagu; both of whom received standing ovations for their services to Nottingham.
for all those gathered at Burntstump Hill, it was another fantastic effort from the Paviors forwards that ensured the home side passed 50 points for the second league game running. The result ensured that Paviors finished the season in their highest league position for 14 season's and also saw them finish 5 points above Newark and 16 points above local rivals Mansfield in the league ranking's. Eggleshaw was joined on the score sheet by Badger Allott (2), Marshall, Man of the match Gaz Briggs, and Danny Graney. Marshall added 4 conversions.

from 1-15 playing hard, aggressive Rugby. The pack were dominant from start to finish, with hard running Ben Parker showing the way with some great turn over ball, and Dave Fotheringham with his last game for the club also putting in a trademark performance from the base of the scrum, his pick and drives will be sorely missed next season. Southwell barely had a minutes possession in the opening exchanges, with Valley controlling the ball well and playing Rugby in the right areas. Southwell indiscipline also allowing Valley to keep them pinned back. But with all the possession Valley still struggled to get the ball over the line, with some missed passes and decent defending from the visitors. Valley knew that they needed to come away from the pressure with some points on the board, and they duly did through Captain Mark Burditt.

Attenborough’s Popkess Cup Final Side, 2008
THE START OF NOTTS PREMIER LEAGUE CRICKET On Saturday 25th April the curtain goes up on the 2009 Nottinghamshire Cricket Board Premier League championship with current champions, West Indian Cavaliers at home to newcomers Farnsfield, promoted from the Bassetlaw League as 2008 champions. Farnsfield's captain and club professional, Paul Franks of Notts.CCC says 'As we enter the NPL for the first time we are excited by the challenge that lies ahead. Over the recent years we have developed a good 1st team squad with the right blend of youth and experience and these players are respectful to the fact that this step up in standard is going to be a big test both individually and collectively. If their hard work from last season and during the off season continues I'm sure we will play some good cricket along the way'. Joining the club in preparation for the season ahead are Dave Loveridge from Mansfield Hosiery Mills, Steve Musgrove from Cuckney and hard-hitting batsman Dave Wilcock from Blidworth. Wicket keeper Damian Crowley also returns from South Africa for a 2nd season. A big loss to the club will be Sam Wood who joins the new Notts. Academy team in the Bassetlaw league.
coaches over many years. Several of the first team have represented the County at various times of their cricketing careers. We have a blend of good young players coupled with a few more experienced players who still have a lot to offer. We realise that Premier League Cricket will offer a new challenge, which is why we have looked to strengthen last year's side with Fitzgibbon & Carter. The whole club, from the junior members through to the seniors and all those who have helped to make the club behind the scenes the success it is today, are looking forward to the 2009 season with eager anticipation. Playing Premier League Cricket at the picturesque setting of 'The Strand' in Attenborough, next to the Attenborough Nature Reserve, will further help to boost interest in cricket in the area, for both young and old'. The Cavaliers have signed Tanashe Panyangara, a right arm fast bowler, from Barkisland Cricket Club in the Huddersfield Drakes League. Tanashe has moved to Nottingham due to work commitments. Otherwise the squad are unchanged, Zuben Faisal, right arm off spinner, has moved up from the 2nd XI and the club professionals are once again Usman Afzaal (Surrey CCC) and Bilal Shayafat (Notts.CCC). Kimberley has lost the services of Jason Gorman, Michael Innes and Tom Collishaw. Nick Langford is likely to be limited in his availability because of his football apprenticeship with Mansfield Town and Josh Mangan is unable to return due to his Australian Academy commitments. The club have two developing youngsters in Dom Terkowski, leg spinner, and Paldeep Sidhu and they have recruited Nigel Porter, left arm spinner from Gedling Colliery. Their professionals will be Samit Patel (Notts.CCC) and Mark Footitt (Notts.CCC) who has joined the club from Papplewick. Caythorpe are unlikely to have the services of Russell Warren, top of the leagues batting averages in 2008, because of work commitments. South African Leon Botha has been released, Ian Saxelby begins a 3 year contract at Gloucestershire CCC and Will Sabey has returned home to Guildford. They have signed ex Notts CCC players Guy Welton and Josh Mierkalns as their club professionals, Josh returning having spent last season at Matlock CC. Guy is probably best remembered for sharing a record opening stand of 406 with Darren Bicknell for Notts. against Warwickshire in 2000 and scoring over 3000 first class runs with a top score of 200 not out. Stephen Randall (ex Notts.CCC) returns to his old club from Cuckney and also
Farnsfield will be a welcome addition to the Premier League and extensive work has been undertaken to upgrade and update the current clubhouse, patio area and changing rooms which are on schedule to be completed for the start of the season. The league's other newcomers are Attenborough, 2008 champions of the South Notts. Cricket League and winners of the 2008 Champion of Champions trophy. They open the season with a home game against league runners-up Kimberley and have also made new signings in preparation for the challenges ahead. Shaun Fitzgibbon (22) is a top order batsman/wicket keeper who represented New Zealand U19 at the 2006 World Cup, and plays for the Otago State 2nd XI and Southland CC in New Zealand. He is a qualified cricket coach and will be a great help to Attenborough CC both on the field and helping to coach junior members at the club. Andy Carter (20), fast bowler contracted to Notts.CCC, who played for Bracebridge Heath, Lincs. last season and Nolan McKenzie have also signed. Cricket Manager Nick Allcoat commented, '2008 was a great season for the club - the best ever. What was particularly pleasing was that success for the 1st team was achieved by a squad that contained 9 regular players that came through our own youth system. A culmination of all the good work undertaken by our Report continued on back page

Golf EMOTIONAL MANAGEMENT... ITS THE FUTURE Last time we touched on 'Emotional Management' in Golf and the idea of developing a sense of humour to control your anger, frustration, rage, embarrassment etc... And to improve your concentration! Using the idea of developing that sense of humour and perspective is used by champions to stop their anger, etc... from literally taking control! That feeling or emotion (energy in motion) is due to a powerful chemical reaction in your body!! Most amateurs let that one bad shot, that bit of bad luck, mess with thoughts and their performance they lose faith and confidence/belief and make another mistake, lose the hole or spoil a complete round or even miss the cut! . A more productive way is to smile about it, take it on the chin, accept you've made a mistake (You're Human)! And deal with the issue on the training ground or a lesson with the club pro! It is so easy to overreact and lose control of your thoughts and feelings that when you get to your ball and you see the result of the bad shot, you start to feel that sense of feeling angry, upset or embarrassed all over again! Maybe not as strong but at some level you will feel the same or similar

(Your internal dialogue) Already you have improved your chances for success considerably! Now you can Focus more on the shot you are about to take, the last one has gone it's in the past. Now relax and concentrate, go through your normal routine picture the shot, distance, club selection, stance, grip, practice swing, reset and enjoy the feeling of swinging the club through the ball..... THE EFFECTS OF MUSIC ON PERFORMANCE... The next time you play you take your Ipod with you down the gym its worth taking time to consider what sort of music you listen to – it can effect more than the enjoyment of your workout. Based on a recent study of 24 sports studies students (12 male and 12 female) from Nottingham Trent University, it was observed that tempo, or pace of music can actually change the way your body responds to exercise. The study investigated the effects of differently paced music upon exercise performance during maximal exercise on a stationary bicycle. Students cycled to a control condition (no music), slow music, fast music, slow to fast music and finally, fast to slow music. For the last two conditions, musical tempo was changed when the participant's heart rate reserve reached 70%. In all test sessions, participants began cycling at a workload of 50 watts, which was increased by increments of 25 watts every minute until self-declared exhaustion. The point of exhaustion during each session was defined by the workload at the last completed minute of exercise. Every minute at the point of increasing the workload, heart-rate was also recorded using a Polar heart-rate monitor. The music used was extracts taken from Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, transmitted through headphones. Each of
the 24 subjects completed five exercise sessions successfully yielding some very interesting results. Although there was no significant difference in the heart-rate between the five conditions, it was evident that the participants achieved a significantly higher workload during the slow to fast music conditions. This may be due to the notion that if music is not synchronised to the rhythm of exercise, it may prove to be detrimental to performance. A well-documented study carried out back in 1978 also on cyclists showed that with the synchronised music, subjects were able to achieve significantly better scores for endurance. In the case of the study at Nottingham Trent University it seemed that fast music played during low exercise intensities may have been too great a tempo to induce the synchronisation effect. Music that is too fast or too slow for the desired movement or that has rhythmic patterns at odds with the particular movement involved for the exercise would not be an appropriate choice. Therefore the slow to fast music condition may have had the necessary synchronisation effects. This may be attributed to the fact that at the lower exercise intensities, the slow music replicated the natural forms of the students physical activity more appropriately than the fast music. Then as the intensity

Call 0115 965 6366 or info@ballsmania.net increased and the students reached 70% of their maximal heart rate they seemed to be spurred on by the switch to the fast music. The second theory as to why slow to fast music may have caused the students to achieve a higher workload relates to what is known as the ' Parallel Processing Model'. This theory takes the notion that at low exercise intensities, an athlete uses an external focus such as music. However, as the exercise intensity increases an athlete would tend to switch to internal cues, such as the sensation of fatigue. In such circumstances listening to fast paced music may actually reverse this process. This may go further to explaining why, when the music was switched to fast, the subjects managed to exercise to a significantly higher exercise intensity. It seems that this could be a likely explanation, as when the music was changed to fast the tempo was doubled. The sudden increase could well have temporarily distracted the subject's attention off the internal cues such as fatigue, resulting in an increase in performance. The third and final theory as to why slow to fast music may have helped to improve performance is more likely to be a contributing factor to one of the theories already mentioned. From the study it was evident that all the students favoured the fast music and the slow to fast paced music. From each of their comments, it appeared that they preferred these two types of music conditions for the simple fact the quicker temp was more motivating. Another study by Gfeller (1988) found that often athletes preferred choice of music seemed to be those, which evoked images of movies such as Rocky of Fame. These images could well act as another external cue, which may take an athletes attention away from factors such as fatigue. The slow to fast music could have encouraged the students to visualise images, therefore reducing the level of fatigue or at least the perceived level of fatigue. The results of this experiment showed that the slow to fast paced music condition helped make it possible to cycle for longer and, therefore, at a higher exercise intensity than any of the other music conditions. This notion could just as easily be passed on to other cardio vascular exercises where athletes could easily synchronise the pace of their movement to the pace of the music selected in their Ipod. So there you have it – the next time you fancy a hardcore workout load a bit of 'Scooter' into your Ipod and give it some welly!

Cricket Report continued from page 18 James Hawley after 3 years at Leeds/Bradford University where he was a member of the team that played at Lords against Loughborough University in the UCCE Final. Papplewick's Phil Defretias will again Captain the side, with the addition of South African all rounder Martin Bekker, captain of Kwazulu Natal and member of the Dolphins franchise. Also joining from Underwood is top order batsman Chris Briggs. The club have lost the services of two home-grown professionals in Mark Footitt and Luke Fletcher who have gone to Kimberley and Clifton respectively as club professionals. Papplewick are hoping to add at least one more player to their squad before the start of the season, other than that the squad will remain the same as in 2008. The club have been busy improving facilities including underground drainage. Clifton Village have lost the services of Davis Lucas (Northants.CCC) and Adam Shepherd, who will play in the Notts. Academy side in the Bassetlaw League. Alex Hales (Notts.CCC) continues as club professional along with Luke Fletcher, (Notts CCC) joining from Papplewick. Alex, Luke and Liam Andrews have been out in Australia this winter and Danny Footitt has been playing in New Zealand. Nick Silverwood has also joined from Bottesford in the South Notts. Village League and Ryan Dennis, a young opening bowler from Nottingham Trent University. Simon Roberts will be Captain and Cricket Manager/Coach will be Paul Pollard (ex Notts & Worcs). Thanks to five fund providers the club have been able to carry out major refurbishment of the pavilion during the close season. Cuckney, who finished a respectable 6th in their first season in the league in 2008, will be without Richard Logan (ex Nothants CCC) who has moved to Southamton. Also leaving were Steve Randall (to Caythorpe), Steven Musgrove (to Farnsfield), Alex Lloyd (to Papplewick) and Kunal Jogia (to Barrow-upon-Soar, Leics.Premier League). The bolster their squad the club have recruited Adam Burgess from Killamarsh, Dave Hunt from Welbeck, Connor Smith from Worksop College & Notts. U/17's, Greame Tomlinson from York CC (Yorkshire Premier League) and Mark Holmes from the Isle of Wight. Wollaton's Paul McMahon (ex Notts.CCC) continues as domestic professional and captain and the club's overseas player will be Australian Nick Ellsmore (22) from Melbourne. He has played for Melbourne University as an all rounder in Australia where Paul McMahon and Tom Savill have both played over the past few years. Tom Savill should be an ever present this season as he is taking a years sabbatical from teaching. Batsman Ian Dodd of Radcliffe on Trent has also joined the club. It is hoped that Academy players Steve Allcoat and Scott Elstone can continue their development as being key members of the team. The club are embarking on a massive fund raising campaign this season, along with the Wollaton Sports Association, in order to accomplish the building of a new all-purpose pavilion. Mansfield Hosiery Mills report that they still hope to make two first team signings before the season starts and that they have retained Hassan Adnan as club professional. Sudeah Fernando also returns as overseas player. Dave Loveridge has left the club, signing for Farnsfield Plumtree's major change to their successful first season , finishing 9th in the Premier League, will be the loss of Rob Ferley as club professional. He has signed with his former county club Kent. Another major loss will be Mark Whitehead who travelled from Manchester every week but has decided to play his cricket in the North West. Rob Tapp has stood down from1st XI cricket but remains with the club, Darren Wright will continue as Captain. The key signing will be Jason Brown as club professional, on joining Notts.CCC from Northants.CCC. Jason has been on both England A and full Test tours and has taken more than 400 first class wickets with his offbreaks. In addition, the club has recruited two players from nearby Ellerslie CC, Jurgen Charlesworth, right arm fast opening bowler and Eddie Pidduck, middle order batsman and medium pace bowler. They will be joined by Aussie paceman Jake Haberfield, who returns having made several first class and one day appearances for his state, South Australia during the southern hemisphere summer. Welbeck have lost Darren Bicknell to Belvior, Leicestershire, and wicket keeper Tim Jack, who has retired from premier league cricket and will be playing in the Grantham area this season. Also promising young fast bowling all rounder Jacob Ball will be playing for the newly formed Notts. Academy side in the Bassetlaw League. The club professionals will be Vikram Atri from Lincoln Claytons CC and Guy Darwin who played in the North Yorkshire League last season. Other new additions include promising young batsmen Matthew Higgins and also wicketkeeper Lee Brookes who has premier league experience in Lincolnshire. The youthful element of the side remains with Johnathan Ball taking over the Captaincy. The fixtures for the opening day are; Clifton v Papplewick, Welbeck v Caythorpe, Cuckney v Wollaton, Plumtree v Mansfield Hosiery Mills, W.I.Cavaliers v Farnsfield, Attenborough v Kimberley. All matches are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
BASSETLAW PREVIEW Without wishing to boast, I have named the title winners for the last four years, but on all four occasions with the possible exception of Killamarsh in 2006, one would say the other three were relatively easy. However, who is going to win the Championship this time? Quite frankly I haven't got a clue and if everybody else puts their hands on their hearts, I doubt if many others have either. Whilst compiling this preview, I spoke to a representative of every club and I got so many different answers that it was impossible to base a clear picture on events and I get the feeling that everyone is as mystified as me. Some seem to think that the newly re-formed Notts. Academy will storm to the title whilst others favoured are Glapwell, Retford, Kiveton Park and Edwinstowe; yes it is about as clear as mud. Anyway starting in no particular order, other than where they finished below Farnsfield last season lets take a look at Edwinstowe who hung on to the champions coat tails almost to the bitter end in 2008. Once again they will have the inspirational Paul Peacock as captain and one cannot start to emphasis what a brilliant job he did last year. Don't forget that they came from Division 1 in 2008 and to finish runners-up at the first attempt was a colossal achievement. They were fortunate enough to employ a brilliant left hander in Wade Townsend who is on a 'rookie' contract with Queensland and this time they are again hopeful that Joseph Burns another Australian from the same club as Townsend, Northern Suburbs, will serve them just as well. Burns is primarily a batsman but can bowl and looks another top flight acquisition. In addition they have a tremendous mixture of both experience and youth at their disposal. Jeff Appleton, Ian Smith, Gareth Price and Paul Benson are all capable run-getters whilst James Peacock who has spent the winter in Australia has a huge future as an all rounder in front of him providing he can learn to be a little more patient when he is batting. They have acquired the services of Ben Lake from Hucknall and James Hooper is back after a year missing through injury. Richard Gombos is still a top quality opening bowler and a host of promising youngsters including Adam Walters, Tom Ward, Adam Altoft, Jake Lowe and Aaron Rhodes would be coveted by any other side in the league. Without question Edwinstowe have a good side which should simply get better and better. Could this be their year, we will have to wait and see! Completing the season in third place just a single point behind Edwinstowe, was Glapwell and many good judges have tipped them to go one better this time around. They have in skipper Matt Hall a player who leads by example and is a top class all rounder. He scores centuries and if he was more of a lucky bowler he would take double the amount of wickets that he does. Sometimes there are players who fall into that category and Matt certainly is one of them. He has pace, variation and control but does not have that thing that all good bowlers need, luck.

Nottingham Rd, Oxton, Nottm, NG25 0SE. T: 0115 9652013 The number of times he beats the batsman is staggering and then the ball either just misses the edge who misses the top of the stumps by a coat of paint. Other lesser mortals will probably take twice as many wickets with deliveries nowhere near as good, but that's the way this great game is, and who knows, Matt might just have a change of fortune this time around. They have signed a player from Underwood in the South Nottinghamshire League namely William Wilson who is a medium pacer and they have high hopes of him. Jeff Wharton who had a fabulous season with the ball in 2008 and won the league bowling averages will be hoping for more of the same this time and in addition their batting is steady and Lee Topham and Ricky Csomer have returned after a winter season in Australia and will be better for the experience. Youngsters such as Daniel Bircumshaw and Tom Ritchie will have gained experience from last season and Rob Davison always contributes a host of runs in the middle order. Other stalwarts such as Dean Graney with both bat and ball, Shaun Johnson an effervescent wicket-keeper batsman and Nick Truswell who has had a nagging injury for some while now are all very useful and another good season looks a certainty for Glapwell. Now that Farnsfield have been promoted to the Nottinghamshire Premier League, the wicket at Thoresby Colliery must be regarded as possibly the best batting strip in the entire league. This is mainly due to the hard work of Martin Cheshire a first rate clubman in every sense of the word. Martin has scored a staggering amount of runs for the club and this elegant left hander shows no signs of the flow drying up. He is groundsman, captain and run-getter extraordinary and no club can survive without people of this calibre. They have acquired a South African all rounder namely Douw Van Vuuren and deserve more luck than they had with their overseas player of last season who was injured for most of the time and very rarely did they see him at his best. This is another side who have a nice mixture of experience and youth with stalwarts such as Nigel Birkett, Steve Willis, Farook Aziz, Nyeem Ahmed and Shailesh Patel all being very useful cricketers. Youngsters such as Ben Marson and Lee Willis are improving all the time and Thoresby will be capable of competing against anyone on their best days. A team who surprised everyone last season was the Gainsborough based Marshalls. They might well have finished even higher last season but fell away slightly towards the end. In Paul
