Lisa is our Babe this week and she looks rather lush I was hoping to get her outside and play with her in the bush! Unfortunately she was having 'The Four Bells' Barmaid called Sam, is this weeks bit of fluff, none of it and told me to shut my mush She said she loves her football and admired Brian Clough, I explained I couldn't help it I asked if serving pints, with a chest like that was tough? So she slapped me across the face and stormed off in a huff! It was much more than just a crush! I really didn't mind though, cos she really is hot stuff!

At full time, 3,500 gave a defiant chorus of 'Forest til I die'. It was a valiant and heartfelt gesture, but it felt almost like a cue for the death knoll. This could be the point that saves Forest, but it could just as easily be the missing two that cost the club its place in the Championship. I think Forest deserved a win, and if this game proves pivotal it will be galling for reasons far beyond simple misfortune. The referee was atrocious. Sometimes referees make dubious calls and questions are asked of their competence, but some of the decisions this afternoon were not incompetent – they were frankly inexplicable. At one stage Osbourne was hauled down with the graceless indecency of a rugby tackle, not more than 5 yards from the referee. The ref didn't spot it. He awarded a corner for a shot that evaded Turner's sprawling palm by two yards. His eyes glazed over as five or six horribly late challenges left Forest men in an anguished heap. He remarkably ignored the moment a Barnsley man studded Chris Cohen. The assistant, idling less than a metre away, buckled to stage fright too. Nothing, even fate itself, was on Forest's side. Every spare ball, every rebound, and every ricochet seemed to squirm into the path of a Barnsley player. But this was a spirited and workmanlike display from Forest and we were never second best. When Barnsley imposed themselves at the end of the half the Forest defending was panic-

Attendance: 4,025 Notts County kicked off their penultimate month of the 2008/09 season with a 2-1 defeat at home to Chester City this afternoon. The visitors, in the bottom two prior to kick-off, took the lead in the early stages through Danny Mannix's close-range header and Ryan Lowe doubled that lead early in the second half. Mark Wright's men were in no mood to let their lead slip despite Notts dominating almost all of the second period. Phil Picken came closest for Notts fifteen minutes from time when he crashed a shot off the bar before Mike Edwards pulled a goal back late on. Ian McParland named an unchanged starting line-up for the third game running after Matt Hamshaw recovered from a dead-leg which forced him off at half-time against Lincoln a week ago. Jamie Clapham and Michael Johnson also shook off
stricken and timorous. There was too much apprehension about the consequences of falling behind, but Forest rode out the storm – until the second half. A clash of poor defending and questionable goalkeeping gave Barnsley a poor lead, characterised by the slurring, snarling Yorkshiremen bursting blood vessels to rub salt into Forest wounds. It's always the same in Yorkshire. The natives are more concerned about the visitors' having a miserable time than they are about their own club's success. Their typically obnoxious celebrations made the subsequent penalty miss and equaliser a lot more satisfying. The mood lifted tremendously after Turner's save from an atrocious penalty. After that I was certain of an equaliser, even after Earnshaw thumped the crossbar. The travelling supporters were almost sucking the ball into the net. Sadly we ran out of breath. Barnsley had a host of opportunities as we surged forward, and for a time it was end-to-end. It was physically exhausting to watch. The closest we came was a ball from Gareth McCleary which rolled across the goal-line with the keeper beaten. Cohen retrieved the ball, lying unattended at the corner flag, and he probably should have done better with the eventual shot. It's not a disaster, but we're facing serious peril now. This is a point that keeps hopes alive, but leaves us in purgatory. Match Ratings: Turner - 7 – made some smart saves and excellent decisions in the second half. Gunter – 7 – solid display and some good passes. Morgan – 7.5 – his mistake nearly cost us late in the second half, but for most of the game he was like a brick wall – throwing himself in the path of everything and everybody. A worthy captain. Wilson – 6.5 – solid performance, one or two poor passes. Lynch – 6.5 – solid but unremarkable. Cohen – 7.5 – tireless and desperate performance. Osbourne – 7.5 – excellent display as he roved forwards and back. Always found a pass. McGugan – 7 – a decent performance from a slimmed-down Lewis, until he disappeared in the chaos of the second half. Blackstock – 7 – the target man we've been lacking. Earnshaw – 7.5 – always a threat. Tyson – 6 – struggled to get involved from the wing. Report by Alex Campbell calf concerns to start. Chester got the game underway attacking towards the Victoria Centre Kop Stand and had an injury concern just a few minutes in when Paul Linwood picked up a knock which delayed the play for four minutes. On seven minutes County almost broke the deadlock but Phil Picken, forwards from right-back, dragging a low effort into the side netting from twelve yards out. With twelve minutes gone Notts suffered their own injury blow when Michael Johnson suffered what looked to be a recurrence of the calf injury that classed him as a doubt for the game and he was replaced by Adam Tann. Two minutes later it got a little bit worse for Notts when the visitors opened the scoring. A corner to the far post, aided by a deflection off a Notts player, picked out midfielder David Mannix who had the simple task of heading past Pilkington to silence the home crowd. County desponded well and just have been level on sixteen minutes by Facey flicked Weston's low cross over six yards out when he should have done better. Intent on holding onto their lead Chester opted for five at the back after going ahead and sitting deep - basically saying to Notts 'come on, break us down'. Notts tried to Continued on next page

Notts County Report continued do that and that meant Hamshaw and Weston were on the ball as often as possible looking to weave their magic. On thirty-four Danby was forced into a routine save from Butcher following a short corner, his only real save of the half. Forrester's diving header flashed just wide in the final minute of first-half injury time which was the closest Notts came to drawing level before the break. Just four minutes into the second half the visitors doubled their lead. Down the right Rutherford latched onto the ball and lifted the ball past the onrushing Pilkington - and just to make sure on the line Ryan Lowe turned the ball over the line. Boos echoed around the ground from the home fans who were bitterly frustrated at seeing their side two goals behind. Jonathan Forte replaced Jamie Forrester up front a minute short of the hour and within three minutes he had a chance eighteen yards out but he sliced well wide after getting on the end of Facey's neat pass. Without a win in 2009 Chester were looking very determined to keep hold of their precious lead and again sat deep and had number behind the ball. A superb run by Thompson created a chance for Facey twenty minutes from time but the midfielder's low cross was turned into the side netting at the far post by the big striker. Sean Canham replaced left-back Jamie Clapham nineteen minutes from time with a further body pushed forwards in attack by County. Phil Picken crashed a twenty-five yarder off the bar fifteen minutes from time with Danby well beaten and the goalkeeper was fortunate to see Canham's rebound header land straight in his arms. Jonathan Forte's neat turn and shot five minutes from time deserved better but his shot whistled wide. With no goalkeeper on the bench the visitors had to replaced so Ryan Lowe donned the goalkeeper's gloves for the final few minutes. Despite dominating the possession Notts didn't seem able find a way through and Lowe made a fine save from Forte's header late on - but Mike Edwards did pull a goal back with two minutes remaining after Lowe had blocked Forte's low effort. In the end despite late pressure and seven minutes of added time Notts couldn't equalise.

two minutes the visitors were on level terms when Kevin Spriggs scored with a twenty yard shot, his first goal for the club. The exciting start continued and on fourteen minutes the home side were ahead for the second time. Chris Timons handled in the penalty area and Brian Moogan converted the resultant spot-kick. That was the way the score stood at the interval but after just five minutes of the second half Laurie Wilson scored a superb equaliser curling home a free kick. With the game in injury time Hucknall forced a series of corners and from one of them up popped Adrian Hawes to head home what could well be a crucial, crucial goal. Three substitutions were made with Mitchell replacing Timons, Bonnick replacing Frost and Kettle replacing Cashell Walters. Hucknall: Lindley, Smedley, Spriggs, Baxter, Timons, Hawes, Wilson, Wiggins-Thomas, Frost, Ward, (C) Walters Subs Bacon, Mitchell, Kettle, Bonnick, Liburd Southwell City 0 Kimberley Town 1 It took an unfortunate own goal to separate Southwell City and visitors Kimberley Town at the Memorial Ground, in a game dominated by both defences. City started brightly and showed the good form which earned them all three points at Hatfield earlier in the week and created several chances on the visitors but lacked that final penetration to make the pressure pay dividends. The first shot on goal came in the 20th minute from Kimberley's Jason Russell but City's Darren Sharpe was equal to it. Three minutes later and it was City's turn to have a real attempt when makeshift striker Adam Meakin came close at the other end. Kimberley were reduced to ten men on 25 minutes when Jason Russell fouled City's Robert Haigh but with the referee about to issue a yellow card the red mist descended on Russell who took his anger out on referee Kevin Guise who then issued a straight red card instead. Two minutes before the half hour mark City were awarded a corner. City defender Jack Hudson rose above everyone and made perfect contact, his firm header looked goal bound but ex-City player Mike Oxborrow made a superb reflex save to deny the young City player. The only goal of the game came on 37 minutes when a speculative Kimberley cross was attempted to be headed clear by Jack Hudson but the ball looped over Darren Sharpe into the City net. From the start of the second half Kimberley, in order to protect their slender lead, got men behind the ball and resorted to long ball tactics aided by the strong wind. Kimberley showed a steely determination which belied their lowly league position and defended resolutely as their defence was marshalled by veteran Andrew Jackman. Apart from a shot which was cleared off the City goal line by Robert Haigh in the 50th minute

Non-League Football all the chances fell to City. Most notably James Jepson in the 60 the minute Adam Meakin eleven minutes later but Oxborrow was in great form and made two good saves to protect his goal. With fifteen minutes remaining Oxborrow's defence was finally breached when Danny Prance launched a fierce shot on goal, but with Oxborrow beaten for the first and only time in the match the ball hit the cross bar to deny City a well earned point. Ollerton Town 1 Yorkshire Main 2 Ollerton finally ended their hopes of the league championship after crumbling versus bogey side, Yorkshire Main. In the two clubs four meetings the Yorkshire side have taken full points. Ollerton had the better of the first half and it was their poor second half performance which handed their opponents the win. Dean Hankey saw his shot meet the palms of the keeper as Ollerton looked to open the scoring. Mark Cooper had the visitors opening chance which went the wrong side of the post. Ollerton had a great chance to go in front, Gary Panting flicked the ball inches over the bar. They had an even better chance to go ahead, Lee Wilson beat the keeper with his effort but he couldn't beat the crossbar. Cooper then had a good chance to respond for Main but the heavy wind carried his light shot wide. Yorkshire Main's crossbar then took another battering this time by Julian Topliss. With half time approaching both sides were looking to go into the break with an advantage and it was Ollerton who did this going in front thanks to a Lee Wilson strike. Early in the second half, despite really getting started, Ollerton had more chances to test the keeper. Wilson fired wide and when Wilson looked to turn provider no one could meet his flick on. Ollerton's wasted opportunities were the punished when James Handley beat James Fletcher with lob shot. Sam Agar then had a chance to put his side ahead but he fired over Fletcher's goal. The visitors nearly stunned the crowd when a thirty yard volley was tipped over by a back peddling Fletcher. This was followed by the decisive goal Sam Agar was allowed to turn on to his strongest foot and he fired past Fletcher. Pinxton 2 Nettleham 1 The game started so well for Pinxton with a goal from Ben Bacon as early as the 4th minute, Joey MaCormack's goal kick was headed forward by Jay Cooper into the path of man of the match Ben Bacon, Ben's quick thinking lob 18 yards out left the Nettleham keeper stranded in man's land and could only watch the ball drop under his cross bar for Pinxton's first goal, Pinxton cruising and looked in total control and on the 11th minute made their dominance pay with another goal thanks to a tremendous run and cross by skipper Jamie Renshaw, Jamie's cross found Wayne Cook 10 yard out who just smashed the ball into the left hand side of Nettleham's goal, at this point in the game it looked like Pinxton where going to get a hat full of goals but in the 19th minute Sean Conner limped off with a pulled hamstring which seemed to change the game. Nettleham pulled a goal back on 24 from the penalty spot courtesy of Darren Elding the Nettleham skipper after Josh Parker bungled Steve Mason. Pinxton go in at half time 2-1. The second half was a lethargic end of the season affair which was marred by the sending off of skipper Jamie Renshaw in the 90th minute for back chatting at the referee Liam Snodden, this is uncharacteristic of the Pinxton skipper but could be costly if the ban is when Pinxton play their Final at the end of the month
Newark Town 3 Harrowby Utd 0 Newark strolled to an easy victory over strugglers Harrowby, in a game where the scoreline didn't reflect the Blue's dominance. Dave Issott and Simon Ellison replaced Mark Ellison and the injured Louis Cree. Town took control from the first whistle, and almost had the lead 45 seconds in, when Steve Carty's shot rebounded from the base of the post. Simon Ellison then had a chance just a minute later, when his close range effort was fumbled by the keeper. Newark kept pressing early on, and again had a great chance to score when Sam Wilford's shot across the advancing keeper hit the upright and came out to Simon Ellison, who played in Steve Carty, but the midfielder's effort drifted just wide. Dave Issott was the next Town player to create an opportunity, when he saw his shot beaten away by the keeper after beating three Harrowby players with a mazy run. Harrowby had their first attempt on goal on 19 minutes, when Hales' shot from outside the area was comfortably held by Riley. Town then missed a glorious opportunity six minutes later, when Simon Ellison's cross found Chris Self, who blazed the ball high over the bar from just 3 yards. After all their chances, it was only a matter of time before Newark broke the deadlock. It came when a back pass took an awkward bounce hitting the unfortunate Bennett on the knee: the ball rebounding to Simon Ellison, who powered his way through, allowing him to score into the empty net. Town totally dominated the opening 45 minutes, and could well have gone in four or five up. The Blues started the second half confidently, and seven minutes created a good opportunity, when a long goal kick by Chris Riley found Chris Self who lifted the ball across the area before Newton finally cleared to concede a corner. Town maintained their pressure, and didn't allow Harrowby any respite, as they continued to search for the goal that would surely kill the game off. Chris Self saw his shot go just wide of the post after being played in by Mark Blant on 58 minutes, then James Trentini saw his shot smartly saved by the keeper low to his left. Harrowby had their best chance of the match on 60 minutes when Hales ran clear of the defence and hit a low shot, which Riley pushed wide for a corner. Apart from this chance, Harrowby created very little, and rarely put Newark's back line under pressure. To w n g o t a deserved second just a minute later, when a slick passing move involving Wade, Issott and Self led to Chris Self's cross finding Ian Wade, who flicked the ball over the keeper to increase their lead. espite the game being over as a contest, Newark continued to push forward, and almost made it three when James Trentini's searching cross found Sam Wilford, who switched the ball to his right foot before lifting it narrowly over the bar. Wilford had another chance nine minutes later, when his curling shot from 25 yards was tipped over the bar by Bennett. Town rounded off the match nicely in the third minute of injury time, when substitute Craig Roche split the defence with a pinpoint pass to Sam Wilford, whose touch took it round the keeper before slotting into an empty net. After the match, Town boss Rupert Thomas said, “It was a little frustrating: we could have killed off the game in the first 25 minutes, and I didn't think we were clinical enough in front of goal. But at the end of the day, I am happy with the three points. Town will expect a much tougher match when they face current table toppers Forest Town away on Tuesday..

NSL - BASEMENT BATTLE HOTS UP! With the Divisions top four sides not in action this weekend the attention turned to the other end of the table and the fight for survival. Bottom Club Gedling Southbank picked up their first win in seven games with a 3-1 win over Ruddington, Steele, Hogg and Clowerey the goal scorers. Rob Wallis with the consolation for Rudd who drop a place to 14th whilst Gedling's victory wasn't enough to see them jump off the bottom. Attenborough were the team to climb above Ruddington after they were impressive home winners by the same score-line. Towerzy, Oldham and Thomson all netted for Boro who move to 13th. Awsworth however couldn't pick up points in their battle against the drop as they were beaten by Magdala. Ollie Gee (2) and Mark Curry the scorers for Magdala who are now only four points off top spot, but have played several games more than their nearest rivals. In the only other game in the Senior Division Clifton picked up a decent away point at Hucknall Rolls in a 2-2 draw. In Division One usually prolific Bulwell found themselves goal shy although they still managed to pick up a hard fought victory over Pelican res. Knight the only scorer to see the leaders go one step closer to promotion. Second place Sandhurst are still chasing hard to catch Bulwell and they were victorious this weekend over Cotgrave res. In the end it was an own goal that separated the sides as Sandhurst scored through Clarke and Mills before Cotgrave replied courtesy of Murphy and Thornton. The own goal swung the game in Sandhurst's favour and they clung onto a 3-2 victory. Wollaton res however didn't share any of Bulwell's goalscoring problems, smashing eight past Underwood Villa. Steve Magee scored a hat trick along with Fragola's double and Paige, Marcowski and Hind efforts completed the rout. Remarkably this makes it 17 goals in their last three outings for Wollaton, who move into third. It is tight below the top two however and Basford res, Matrixgrade and Greenwood Meadows were all winners which sees the gap from seventh to third close to two points. Basford were home winners 2-1 against Gedling res whilst Darlton Stevens scored a hat-trick as Greenwood Meadows defeated Keyworth res 4-2. Matrixgrade were the most convincing, thrashing Clifton res 5-0. Buck (2), Smith, McMorran and Brown all on the score-sheet. Boots res moved further away from the bottom two with a 1-0 home win over Kimberley res, Tom Winch the only scorer. In Division Two the top pair were both winners to boost their title credentials. Leaders Awsworth res beat Cavaliers res 4-3 but Calverton Academy went one better, victors over Linby res 5-3. Third place Magdala res lost ground as they were held to a draw by Keyworth United res, despite Craig Pearson scoring twice for the title chasers. Craig Yeoman's also bagged a brace as Hucknall Leisure res hammered Attenborough res 4-0. Finally Sandhurst res were 3-1 away winners over Ruddington res, Frost, Munson and Duffy all netting whilst Foster struck a consolation effort for Ruddington. Report by Joe Fish.

COMBINATION - NEW INN THROUGH TO THE JUNIOR CUP FINAL! New Inn progressed to the Final of the Combination Junior cup on Monday with a narrow 2-1 win over Basford Rangers. Basford took the lead through Howard White only to see it cancelled out just before the break by Chris Burrow who converted from the spot following a harsh penalty decision. The game remained all square and pretty even until Sean Annable popped up in the 80th minute to put New Inn 2-1 up. Their emphatic 9 goal demolition of DTD mean their good form has paid dividends as they now proudly sit top of the table on goal difference. S Cassidy and M Murphy notched hat tricks in the win and they were ably assisted by A Murphy 2 and A Robinson. A1 Glazing could have led the table but they were held to a 3 all draw at Volo and remain third as a consequence. Jack Craig 2, Scott Bradburn, Callum Redford, Sean Allen and Jamie Allen all scored for their respective sides. A top two finish for New Venture looks over after they went down 2-1 at AFC Hucknall. David Ward did the damage for Hucknall with the visitors goal coming courtesy of a Calvin Hazzard own goal. Whilst the only other div 1 game saw Bestwood MW Reserves come back from Beeston United 4-2 victors thanks to goals from A Williams 2, M Harrison and D Stewart. J Booth and J Louton replied for Beeston. Medz Reds ended any hopes Newcastle Inn had of wining the division two title and boosted their own when two first half goals sealed a win over their visitors. Steven Ward opened the scoring for Medz in the 7th minute when he picked the ball up just inside the Newcastle half. As he progressed he spotted the keeper off his line and sent a deft chip soaring over his head and into the unguarded net. 2 minutes later Sean Thompson Swung in a free kick from the right hand by line which found the head of Thomas Simpson for 2 nil. Newcastle pushed Medz all the way but were unable to find the finishing touch to claw their way back into the game. Gary Williamson, PJ Sweeny and Jamie Davey were all on target for Blacks Head who remain the only side capable of catching the leaders should they falter in their final few games. Ian Leebetter pulled one back for their visitors Basford Rangers but blacks eventually won 3-1. New Inn got the better of their double header with Rise Park to claim all 6 points. In the first of the two games Sean Pickworth, Stuart Housley and Matthew Lee found the target to give them a 3-2 with Craig Eddyshaw and Ricky Kirk replying. Pickworth and Housley were again on target as they won the second game 2-1 with Michael Bannister notching the Rise Park Goal. Bestwood Re-United have all but crossed the finishing line as far as the division three title race is concerned after this weeks 5-0 win at Southbank. Although Chaffoteaux can still mathematically catch them they would have to lose all their remaining games to prize the trophy from their clasp. Both Anthony Atkins and Chris Atkins scored doubles for Bestwood with Dale Stevenson adding the fifth. Chaffoteaux continue to push them all the way and another home win, this time over La Toque at least keeps them secure in second place with one more point guaranteeing them runners up spot. A Barrett led the scoring with a hat trick for the home side with Z Cox also on the score sheet. L Cox and D Brookes pulled a goal back apiece as they went down 4-2. Justin Jenkins hit five and Anton Ross and Carl Spencer one each as Clifton Villa recorded an equally tidy 7-0 win over struggling Nuthall. Arnold FC are still in the hunt following the 3-2 win at Nottm Alumni. Arnold went two up through Matt Holt and Lee Allen before Andy Dodd levelled matters with two, only for Damien Powell to strike the winner. The top places were finally decided in Division One, as Chesterfield Arms secured second spot with Carl Wilson hitting a pair, Jamie Moore, Jamie Marshall and Ross McAughey one each in the 5-1 win over Clifton Centrals, whilst champions; Rolls Royce Leisure extinguished, George Streets aspirations of runners up with a 3-2 win. Simon Martin, Nick Davies and Jamie Start each scored for Rolls, as Liam Hatfield and Ally Jones responded. Old Colonial ensured Division One football next term as Rick Wyman, Andy Lees and Jamie Scothorn netted in their 3-0 eclipse of Stratford Haven. Sims Metal need just one more win from their last two outings to lift the Division Two trophy after Carl Cox, Matt Byrne, Rikki Robinson and Gareth White all scored in the 4-2 win at New Fairham, who had Richard Talbot and Martin Radmall grabbing the consolations. Second placed Rolls Royce Leisure Villa must be rueing the number of dropped points through drawn games, the seventh of which was this goalless affair against Bulwell Rangers. A couple from Martin Hargreaves and one from Ben Smedley keep Cotgrave PFC in the hunt as they overcame Portland Arms HH 3-1, with Paul Lockwood replying. Vernon Villa will struggle to catch the leaders but must be proud of the way the second hald of the season has gone. In November they were relegations certainties but then went on a tremendous unbeaten run to make them challengers at the other end of the table. They maintained this form with an odd goal in five success at Rempstone with Liam Evans, Matt Sims and Dane Wilson registering for the winners and Sam Noble and Jim Whitchurch for the hosts. Nottm Rangers were left looking over the relegation hole as they were beaten 4-2 by Lenton Villa. Paul harbutz gave the visitors a fortuitous lead after three minutes as the ball bounced over an ill placed keeper but if that was lucky the second by Nick Whittaker was electrifying. The nippy winger set off a mazy forty yard run that took him past four bemused defenders before finishing in style. The hosts hit back with almost the last kick of the first half, as Dan Douglas netted from close in. In the second period Rangers were far more involved but slipped further behind to a Michael Edwards effort, before pulling the scoreline back with a twenty yarder from Simon Taylor. With ten minutes remaining Patrick Neal hammered in from the tightest of angles to secure the points.
Report by John Wheat A late Tom Stevenson goal saw points shared in a 6 goal thriller in senior one match of the day, between Westdale Tavern and Calverton Cherry Tree. An own goal and another for Darren Williamsom were the other Cherry scorers. A 25 yard rocket from Green and a Maradonna wonder goal by Nathan “The Man” Kenny saw honours shared. CALVERTON & ARNOLD DISTRICT POOL LEAGUE - CITY LEISURE POOL LEAGUE - ADELAIDE GO TOP AFTER 7CHERRY TREE A GO TOP! 1 ROMP! Divison 1 Spot On B Railway Volunteers Balfour Club Divison 2 Arnold Liberal Club Royal Oak Cherry Tree B
4-8 Cherry Tree A 3-9 The Eagle 10-2 Ex Service Club 2-7 Major Oak 4-5 The Longbow 4-5 Carlton Liberal Club
In the game of the week, Cherry Tree A travelled to Hucknall to take on the might of Spot On B and came away with a resounding victory that sees them move to the top of the table and installs them as the new overwhelming favourites for the League title. The first two legs amazingly saw battles of the tribute acts/star impersonators, with Meat Loaf getting the Tree off to a good start by beating Curly Watts, quickly followed up by Rocket Ronnie Baxter edging a tight one against Humpty Dumpty. Despite losing, Loz was immediately thrust back into action partnering love god, Donut Radford and they easily saw off the challenge of the unfamiliar pairing of squad players Phil Oliver and Snowy Snowman Snowshall. Super-sub Harper continued his surprising form this season with another win in the next over an out of sorts Corey Blackshaw, who appeared fatigued after levelling a couple of tables at his employers sister club. With the scores level, up stepped Netherfield Sunbed Centre's walking advert, Ian “The Body” Owen, to claim the Man Of The Match award with a total clearance from Donut's dry break and then going one better with an 8-baller in the second pairs leg to move the Tree two frames up once more. Spot On did get back into the match temporarily with a predictable win for Nidge Orton over The Snowman but the Tree then moved to the brink of victory with two great performances by wantaway County B star, Greg Crowson and the win was sealed in the next by Shrek Fewkes after his lucky win over Dave Smith. The much anticipated Arnold Club derby turned out to be a rather one-sided affair as Balfour Club made it two wins in a row to move into a Europa League spot after thrashing a lacklustre Ex Service Club, who are now well embroiled in a tough relegation battle. Only Ex Service star player, Gary Wheat, did himself justice to claim their only singles win and Captain and Secretary duo, Andy Simons and Mick Stevenson's positions at the helm are starting to look extremely precarious amidst rumours of player unrest and a possible coup could well be on the cards. For Balfour Club, Peperami Rigby and Kevin Bacon both claimed 8-ballers to cap a fine night for the season's surprise team. Elsewhere in Division One, The Eagle gained a lucky win at Railway Volunteers with only Tosh Ledgard and Dale Mayes showing any real form for the home team. In Division Two, Major Oak continued their fine start to the season with another convincing win, this time at Arnold Liberal Club, a match that saw Paul Walker, gaining his team's first ever 8-baller and a win at last for veteran, Keith Hodgkinson. Meanwhile, a first win of the campaign for The Longbow over Royal Oak and Carlton Liberal Club's defeat of Cherry Tree B sees the tightest division for years, with no less than six teams all in with a chance of claiming the second place spot. DIVISION 1 Pegasus Snooker Club enjoyed a moral boosting 5-3 win over Stadium Leisure in the final game of the regular season. After a miserable run of three straight defeats the club can now look forward to the play-offs with renewed confidence after a long season, which started poorly and never really ignited for last season's runners-up. Jamie Mathers was in inspired form for Pegasus knocking in two breaks of 44 to see off Steve Butler whose only contribution to the frame was chalking his cue a few times! Stadium Leisure’s Bob Walker and Daniel Di Folco both won their frames in the hunt for another scalp. Bob 'The Legend' Walker cleared up from the blue to win a hard fought frame against Steve Booth whilst Di Folco enjoyed a good win against Trevor Hodgkinson who was making his Pegasus debut. Fortunately for Pegasus, Jamie Mathers who was partnered by Hodgkinson, continued his good form to steer the team to an important win in the pairs frame against Walker & Di Folco. At Stadium it was no surprise that the frame between Mike Langdon and Stadium's Matt Ellis went down to the black as the previous two this term were also settled in a similar manner. Once again it was Stadium's Ellis who was left to rue his luck after an attempted pot on the black left Langdon with a simple pot to put Pegasus one up. Ross Wilkin enjoyed a good win 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

against Pegasus new boy Danny Castel-Nuovo to level the score but Eric Towle got back to winning ways with a solid victory against Pete Gormley to put Pegasus back in front. The partnership of Langdon and Castel-Nuovo then made it three wins on the spin as they saw Pegasus home to victory with a comfortable 50 point winning margin against Wilkin and Stadium youngster Sean Hopkin. BCI Snooker Centre 'A' sealed runners-up spot with a great 5-3 win over The Peoples Hall. At BCI, Jason Bettridge got things off to a good start with a win over Nav Hussain but Peoples Hall made it one apiece with a win from Zed Zubair over Tony Collins. Hanson Stowe (super sub) had a good win over the dangerous Yas Abbas and the pairing of Bettridge and Collins squeezed past the Peoples Hall pairing by 13 points. At Peoples Hall, Wayne Martin had a comprehensive victory over Zeb Ahmed with breaks of 29, 39 and 24. Yasir Hussain was up next against Steve Coleman in a tight contest that Coleman pinched on the blue. John Marshall then defeated Sam Haugh in another tight contest. In the pairs, Ahmed and Marshall went 49 points up against Coleman and Martin without breaking sweat. But with only 59 points left available, the BCI pair came back with some solid potting and a well laid snooker. Ahmed then left the brown over the pocket and the rest of the balls well placed for Martin. Sadly Martin missed a simple blue and allowed the Peoples Hall pair to win the frame. DIVISION 2 BCI Snooker Centre 'B' needed a win against rock bottom City Hospital Leisure Centre to pinch runners-up spot from Mapperley Community Centre, who could only draw 4-4 against Wollaton RBL. At City Hospital, Alan Taylor lost 27-41 to Clint Broome and Russ Kirk lost 30-61 to Paul Bradley. However, City captain Rob Wallace had a terrific 72-26 win against Craig Bradley and the pairing of Taylor and Wallace narrowly beat Broome and Stuart Bradley 42-31 to ensure the leg was tied. At BCI, despite some close frames, the home team sealed runners-up spot with an impressive 4-0 victory. D Salmon beat Dave Buckley 76-7, Mick Salmon beat Jordan Parnham 58-46, Toby Irons beat Dennis Peet 56-39 and Shaun Parkinson beat Sean Croft 69-57.

NSL REP GAME - NSL 0-1 TEEESIDE The NSL Representative Squad were beaten 1-0 against the Teeside League in the Preliminary Round of the Carlsberg National League Systems Cup at Bilborough Pelican. Strikers Walker and Woolwich went close to scoring for the NSL in a scrappy game that saw Teeside reduced to ten men. BallsMania caught up with the NSL's press officer Neil Fraser who sent us the following report - Commenting on Saturdays disappointing result for the NSL in which
we got beat by the single goal it was a scrappy game and we didn't get the luck you sometimes want to get in big games. With the sending off of the Teeside player after 18 minutes it probably spurred them on more and they played the better football 1st half. The 2nd half we had good chances from Alex Woolwich, Kev Walker and James Allen and also a good appeal for a penalty when Kev Walker was brought down from behind in the area. Overall the Teeside league deserved it and all the best to them in the competition next season. I would like to thank Bilborough Pelican for the excellent facilities and hospitality on the day (not forgetting Swiftys carpet of a pitch) and also the NSL committee for all the efforts post and pre match in getting the game played. All the players that made themselves available should also be commended for the performance on Saturday and the squad itself was strong on paper although you don't win games on p a p e r . Just responding to certain comments from individuals on the NSL forum, it is a very difficult job selecting the NSL Rep squad and getting the right balance of players

available on the day. I have run the team for 3 seasons now and you get to know what clubs aren't interested in providing players and also certain individuals that should be in the team either are unavailable or let you down at the last minute. I would like to look more at players from the other two divisions beyond the Senior Divisions; but I also with Chris Munroe run Basford Utd on a Saturday therefore cannot get to watch every team. There was also an age restriction for the competition where the player had to be over 19 years old and under 33 which also ruled a few players out that w o u l d h a v e b e e n s e l e c t e d . Regarding the NSL Rep team next season if I'm still asked to manage it or someone else takes over I do know that there will be the same problems regarding players availability and also the same criticism from individuals on the NSL forum. We can all pick 20 players for the squad but the crux is to get them all there on the day which never happens. The NSL would like to thank everyone who attended the game and hope that next year we go at least one better.Send in your reports to info@ballsmania.net

Nottingham Rugby 30 London Welsh 24 Nottingham kept their chances of a top four place alive with a moral boosting victory over the London Welsh. Unfortunately the size of the victory was not enough for a bonus point, but it will keep Doncaster on their toes - who lost to Bedford on Saturday and are now only six points ahead. Mansfield 17 Paviors 50 When stand-in captain Paul Townsley crossed in the 75th minute it took Paviors to their highest score against Mansfield in many, many season's and rounded off a great Paviors performance that showed pace, power and skill in abundance. Whilst it was the Paviors backs that claimed all the points, the laurels rest with the entire pack for a great team effort. Still smarting from the poor performance and cup defeat against Mansfield two weeks earlier, the Paviors forwards dominated the scrum and breakdown area, and whilst the absence of a hooker meant that whilst Paviors never quite functioned perfectly at the line-out, stand in thrower Gaz Briggs at least supplied a plentiful supply of ball. Mansfield – particularly in the first half – had their moments to, and it was only several last ditch tackles from Marshall, Nixon, and Billam which kept their score in check. By the end however, the normally vocal home support had long since quietened, and dwindled in number and only the most passionate Mansfield supporter could argue that the better side had won. Paviors tries came from Badger Allott (2); D Graney (2); B Smith; G Billam; D Marshall; P Townsley. Marshall also converted 5 scores. Ilkeston 34 Coalville 22 The intention was clear from the start with the Ilkeston's (Elks) forwards clattering into their opposite numbers from the kickoff causing them to concede a penalty. The normally dependable Jono Falls pulled a relatively looking simple chance wide although the stiff breeze did have the upper hand. He repeated his error two minutes later when Greg Taylor's midfield break forced Coalville to handle on the floor and give the younger Falls a second chance which he again missed. Unconcerned by these setbacks the Elks did take the lead with a well worked try by Dan Taylor. From scrum close to the halfway line Rich Burne picked up and fed scrumhalf Andrew Chapman. Exploiting the space on the short side Chapman moved the ball to Greg Taylor who put Dan Mahoney away on the outside. As the tacklers converged Mahoney switched the ball back inside where Dan Taylor was on hand to speed over. Jono Falls found his range and converted to make it 7 – 0. Making good use of the slope and wind Coalville put boot to ball and pinned the Elks inside their own half. The pressure paid when fly-half Measures kicked a penalty to reduce the arrears to 7 – 3. As the sides vied for openings both sets of backs showed that there was pace and skill in all positions. A promising Elk's attack ended in disaster when JJ Connolly's attempted grubber kick inside the Coalville twenty-two was fielded by Coalville scrum-half Twigg, who impressed all afternoon, who broke from his own in-goal area to half way. Support was on hand to keep the ball alive and put winger Rice over close to the posts. Measure's conversion gave the visitors a 7 – 10 lead, albeit with slope and wind to their favour. Within three minutes the lead was reclaimed by a solo effort by fly-half Connolly. Adam Stoker's lineout take was driven forward and when the ball finally reached Connolly, he spotted a gap, and seeing a gap, with a show and a shimmy, he was over. Jono Falls converted giving the Elks a narrow 14 – 10 advantage. However, the lead was short lived when from the restart Coalville's centre White broke in midfield, fed fullback Richmond, whose pace took him clear of defenders to score and move Coalville back in front. Fly-half Measures converted putting the visitors into a 14 – 17 lead. The Elks fought back and created two chances which could have regained the lead but Coalville's defence held firm. First Adam Stoker, Mat McGuire and Andrew Chapman combined to create space for
Ilkeston celebration championship Dan Mahoney but as the line beckoned he was forced into touch with a covering tackle. The second chance also involved Chapman with Rich Burne, Bryn Locke and Craig Charlton in support but the ball was split in the tackle and the chance gone. As the Elks applied the large vocal crowd anticipated a score but not the one that arrived. From a good position inside the Coalville twenty-two the Elks lost the ball in contact and Twigg was again on hand to break out and race the length of the park and make the score 14 – 22 at the break. Despite having the lions share of possession the Elks thanks to the sterling work of front row McGuire, Marc Moore and Charlton, ably supported by line-out jumpers Stoker, Locke and Steve Quinn the home side were deservedly behind due to the visitor's ability to punish on the counter attack. The halftime break gave the Elk's management team of Coach, Scott Rudkin, and Manager, Bob Garland, time to remind their charges of the need to play the percentage game and not take risks when the odds were stacked against them. With the breeze and slope to assist them the Elks tightened their game in the second half. The ball was kept close to the forwards with Quinn, Burne and Steve Mahoney punching around the fringes of ruck and maul. The feat of denying Coalville any points in the second half was testimony to the success of the strategy. Two missed penalties early in the half were scant reward for the pressure applied but the investment was repaid when driving play

from Charlton and Steve Mahoney created possession from which Connolly coolly claimed a drop goal to bring the Elks to within five points. With twenty five minutes gone a strike against the head, by Jason Falls, inside the Coalville twenty two saw the ball moved quickly to outside centre Greg Taylor. His power and change of pace allowed him to crash over close to the posts with Jono Falls' conversion regaining the lead at 24 – 22. Connolly increased the lead four minutes later when another dropped goal sailed between the posts after the ball had been secured and delivered to the fly-half after a clean Stoker line-out take. Adrian Montague replaced Locke to ensure the forward unit retained some power as the game reached a crescendo with all phases being contested with vim, verve and controlled aggression. Supporter's nerves were finally settled with thirty five minutes of the half gone when a Greg Taylor scored his second try. As Coalville looked to move the ball from inside their own twenty two, a crunching tackle from inside centre Cook caused Coalville's White to spill the ball. His fellow centre Greg Taylor snapped up the loose ball and touched down between the posts. Connolly's conversion gave the Elks the final score as youngster Gareth Lewis replaced Dan Mahoney on the wing. He was quickly into the action on the restart as he made a crunching tackle to halt another fast moving Coalville counter attack. Report by Bob Garland
and Forest Rugby hero: Micky “The Munch” Skinner – ever since he smashed that French bloke in the '91 World Cup Biggest influence: See above!! Best sporting moment: Winning the league a few seasons ago. We had a cracking team and it was a pleasure to play in it. Funniest rugby memory: We have a “Pr**k of the Season” award that just gets funnier every year, but JC trying to clear our lines only to kick the ball against the posts and straight into the arms of their winger was a classic. Worst rugby memory: All the injuries I've had Best trainer: Roy Yorke. He's recently fallen in love with the club's sprint sled and was spotted heading
into town with it last Saturday night. Worst trainer: Rod Exton. Always at training but never breaks a sweat. Worst haircut: Sadly he's left the club now, but Pudding - if you're out there mate… get it cut! Worst dressed: I'd love to say our skipper Mike Leavey, but at least he thinks about what he wears unlike Rod Team jokers: Matt Draper and Mozza usually cause trouble when they booze together. Pre-match ritual: Scrambled egg on toast Toughest opponent: Richard Cockerill – even in Touch Rugby he kept starting fights!! Best team played against: We always have good matches against Boston and they're a decent bunch of lads. They're quite rightly starting to climb through the leagues now.

Sheffield Steelers 2 The GMB Panthers came up short in the final and the Sheffield Steelers added the play-off crown to the league championship. It's a second successive PlayOff win for Steelers and their third in the EIHL but for Panthers it's the third time they have tasted final defeat. Sheffield Steelers made it a double by adding the Play-Off trophy to their league triumph after coming out on top against great rivals Nottingham Panthers at the NIC in front of a capacity crowd. fter the opening period in the Play-Off final at the NIC the Steelers were ahead by a single goal in a fast moving - hard hitting contest. The goal came after 14.50 and came from the most unlikely of sources in Steelers rock-steady defenceman Steve Munn, left, (2nd), striding over the blueline and unleashing a big shot that flew past goaltender Michel Robinson. Earlier a smart Robinson save denied Ashley Tait but while Panthers have had chances on the powerplay they are struggling to breakthrough a solid Steelers defence. There was no change to the scoreline after two periods, Steelers still ahead by that first period
goal by Steve Munn. It's been pretty intense throughout but defences are very much on top. Best chances fell late on to Panthers but both Jade Galbraith and Matt Myers were denied by the ever impressive Jody Lehman in the Steelers cage. Going in to the third period with a single goal lead Steelers grabbed the crucial second goal at 44.37 when Ryan Finnerty (21st) slid the puck home after it broke perfectly to him with Panthers goaltender Michel Robinson having no chance to react. From that point on it was the Steelers defence doing what they have done so many times this season, snuffing out the threat of the opposition and with goaltender Jody Lehman, right, as solid as ever he picked up his tenth shutout of the season and found the perfect way to round off a great season for him personally. In the meantime the club would like to re-iterate it's thanks to the best fans in the country....the fans of the GMB NOTTINGHAM PANTHERS....and to all our sponsors. See you next season!

Health & Fitness Anabolic Steroids are becoming increasingly popular with some studies suggesting that the Class C Drug is growing almost as popular as Cannabis. This I find hard to believe, but you don't have to be Harvard Scientist to witness that more and more guys are using the hormone enhancing drug. So what are Anabolic Steroids and are the side effects really as bad as we hear? Anabolic Steroids are a class of steroid hormone related to the hormone testosterone. They increase protein synthesis within cells, which results in the buildup of cellular tissue, especially in muscles. The full name for this class of drugs is androgenic (promoting masculine characteristics) anabolic (tissue building) steroids (the class of drugs). Some of the most abused steroids include Deca-Durabolin, Durabolin, Equipoise, and Winstrol. Where once steroids were used only by elite athletes and the body building clientele of "hardcore" muscle gyms, GP's are now seeing an increasing numbers of young men, even adolescents, turning to steroids for no other reason than Friday night vanity. In a recent study a GP in London was quoted as saying "The youngest person I have treated is 15. We have realised that this isn't a small, isolated problem. It's an international problem for the youth of today, There will be people out tonight in London who are using steroids, not because they want to run faster or jump further, but just because they want to look good." Unfortunately, despite the boom in steroid use and the potential dangers involved, less is known about the scale of the problem than with any other controlled drugs. Steroids are banned under the same Misuse of Drugs act that controls the supply of cannabis and cocaine. However, users do not consider themselves standard drug takers because of the association with fitness and nutrition. Another big problem is that steroids are not associated with widespread criminality either, so little effort is expended on cutting off the supply lines from Asia, Central America and Europe, where the drugs are largely manufactured.
Experts believe that increased sales of steroids and supplements usually follow the exposure of a high-profile athlete being tested positive such as the sprinter Dwain Chambers. This phenomenon was most obvious when elite athletes began testing positive for nandrolone, a substance that boosts endurance. "Some of the public secture believe that if it's good enough for the stars, then it's good enough for them" was the comment made by the same GP. The trouble is steroids obviously put your health at risk, yet these days, with some, it as though there is something sexy about steroids. What is "sexy" about testicular atrophy, baldness and breast growth - some of the side-effects commonly associated with steroid use. The bad news is that there has never been a nationwide study of anabolic drug use but there is currently a growing body of evidence that points to a huge market for illegal anabolic steroids in the UK, and a disturbing shift in the demographic spread of the people taking them. A recent study by the University of Glamorgan identified steroid use by children as young as 14 in South Wales! It also and found that use of the drugs spanned a wide social spectrum including teachers, police officers and office workers. The Glamorgan study also found that 58% of people questioned at three gyms in the midGlamorgan area admitted using steroids, some of them as young as 15. A headteacher, in the Glamorgan study said: "It is becoming more apparent now. It seems to come from a macho gym culture. The boys who are taking the drugs are not top sportsmen, they are just looking for respect in their communities and for whatever reason are turning to the gym and sometimes steroids." A body builder from the same study who has been using steroids for a decade, agreed that the users were getting younger. "There are a lot of younger lads getting involved with steroids at the gyms round here now," he said. They come in and train for a few weeks then start using and it is no good for them because they haven't got the core strength to start with." Fed by vanity and competition, the desire for ever greater muscle mass and definition can be met by steroids. Many gyms thankfully operate a strict no-drugs policy, but there are others, up and down the country where steroids are available over the counter. In drug re-hab clinics across the country staff are now treating four new steroid users for every new heroin user - a reversal of the situation back in 2004. The reality is that although steroids undoubtedly help to

increase muscle mass there is a long list of possible side effects including – Hair Hair loss is one of the most dreaded side effects of pumping your body full of hormones Brain Essentially, steroids mess with your head, causing nausea, destroying brain cells and prompting violent mood swings. Some users have also reported suicidal tendencies. Face Acne is not particularly harmful (although we seem to remember that big spots really hurt and aren't the best for attracting the ladies). Do you really want the hormones of a 15-year-old all over again? Nose White blood cell production drops, which weakens the immune system and makes users more susceptible to colds, flu and other infections. Chest Man-boobs. Enough said! Heart High blood pressure and heart disease are common side effects of almost every steroid. Arms Injecting steroids is even more dangerous than taking them orally. Needles carry the risk of hepatitis B and C and HIV, plus you also risk abscesses or infections in the muscle tissue. Liver and kidneys The effects of taking steroids are similar to a really heavy night on the sauce – your kidneys and liver are forced to work extra hard to flush the steroids through your system, leading to long-term organ damage and even cancer. Stomach Vomiting is a common side effect – and for a user can be a sign that their liver is turning to mush. Water retention is another problem, and there's little point building enormous muscles if you're waddling around with a bloated pot belly. Penis Impotence. Not likely to go down well with the ladies.
