Forest never do things the easy way, do they? We should have been raising a glass to safety this evening, but instead we'll be supping up with one cautious eye on the league table. It's been a remarkable turnaround, and for a few weeks almost everything has gone Forest's way. But there remains a chance of a final day disaster, at least until Monday evening. Forest played fairly badly this afternoon; trapped somewhere between complacency and incompetence. But they did enough. Blackpool were determined to throw down the anchor on 2008/09 and they didn't let Forest have it their way. Forest took the lead on the back of a polished move and another excellent Lynch cross. The subsequent 15 minutes saw a run of opportunities to double the lead. The home side were nothing special, but they were scrappy enough and ugly enough to keep the game on a leash. They had enough about them to cash in on a leaky back five system which lacked anything of the discipline shown at Sheffield United. The equaliser came after Chambers dived in on the half-way line and his colleagues failed to recover. Garner's automated toppling strategy gave Forest 20 minutes of hope, but Blackpool were in no mood to take their own battle to the Report by Alex Campbell final day and they were boisterous in every tackle. Cohen's free kick was tipped over (perhaps his first ever passable set piece), Earnshaw came close with a net-whistling strike that had some Forest fans celebrating, and James Perch missed the target with a free header. In stoppage time McGugan had a customary scolding from Earnshaw after drilling a poor shot into the keeper's arms instead of passing. But Forest fans filed out in fairly high spirits, dwelling on the usual doomsday scenarios and mathematical strategies that dominate conversation at this time of year. As we suspected, a win against relegated Southampton – who will have no incentive beyond pride – will keep us up, and probably reshape the entire future of the football club. The Blackpool fans were happier this afternoon, but the joke's on them. Their back garden continues to be a cesspit of vomiting Glaswegians and fat orange slappers in costume. Match Ratings: Smith – 6 – excellent save from a late free-kick, but the same old story. Gunter – 6 – not as comfortable in the advanced role. Chambers – 6 – not a horror show by any means, but one or two shaky moments spoiled the performance. Morgan – 6.5 – not as solid with the weight of the entire team on his shoulders. Breckin – 6 – not mobile enough, but just about coped. Lynch – 7 – incisive ball for Blackstock's goal. A reasonable defensive performance. Osbourne – 7- another solid performance. Perch – 7 – good tackling back, but couldn't bridge the gap between defence and attack. Cohen – 6 – a poor game by his own high standards, compounded by typically poor set pieces (one free kick aside). He's overdue that summer holiday. Garner – 7 – scrappy, and his gumption saw them reduced to ten men. Would he have scored if he'd stayed on his feet? I don't think so. Blackstock – 7 – a handful all afternoon, and a vital goal. Subs: McCleary – 7 – not suited to the ploughed playing surface, but he caused problems. Earnshaw – 6 – only one real chance. McGugan – 6 – too late for an impact.

Notts County's campaign on home territory ended with a 3-0 defeat to playoff hopefuls Dagenham & Redbridge this afternoon. Stunning first-half strikes from Sam Saunders and Matt Ritchie kept Dagenham's hopes of gaining promotion to League One through the playoffs very much alive and Ritchie wrapped up the win two minutes from time. Michael Johnson was - as expected - at the heart of the County defence in his last ever competitive fixture in a Notts home game. He replaced Stephen Hunt at the back while Matt Hamshaw was recalled to the team after being on the bench at Morecambe a week ago with an ankle problem. Hunt and Jamie Forrester were well enough after illness to take their places on the bench, so there was no place in the sixteen for Centre of Excellence duo Alex Troke or Lewis Williamson who were drafted into the County squad yesterday. Dagenham got the final fixture at Meadow Lane this season underway attacking towards the Victoria Centre Kop Stand. County had a great opportunity to take the lead in the fifth minute after Myles Weston stole the ball off Arber in the Dagenham defence but after latching onto the ball and advancing into the box

Richard Butcher tamely shot straight at Button. Dagenham's first opportunity came on fifteen minutes through on-loan Portsmouth youngster Matt Ritchie but he blasted wide from all of twenty-five yards. Another great chance came for Notts on twenty minutes with Weston again the architect, but this time his ball across to Facey in the six-yard box was just behind the striker with an open goal in front of him. Weston then went for glory himself on twenty-five from a central position but after weaving his way past two defenders he screwed his shot wide. On thirty-four minutes the deadlock was broken by the visitors, and in some style. Sam Saunders drifted inside from the right and after being given far too much time on the ball he let fly with a left-foot effort that screamed past the stranded Pilkington and into the top corner. It was an effort worthy of gracing the very top stage, and the County fans recognised that by applauding Saunders' strike. After Button dropped a Hamshaw cross five minutes before the break County looked destined to equalise but Weston's shot was deflected wide by a Dagenham defender in a crowded penalty area. From the resultant corner John Thompson met the ball with a firm header, but he couldn't direct his effort on target and the ball drifted over. A minute before the break the Daggers doubled their lead - again in spectacular fashion. This time left-back Matt Ritchie let fly from twenty-five yards and his thunderbolt flew past Pilkington into the top-left-hand corner of his goal. Again the goalkeeper had no chance and County were left stunned after enjoying the better of the chances. Ben Fairclough replaced Richard Butcher at half-time and he

moved straight up top to partner Delroy Facey. County began the second half searching for a way back into the game and although they were positive in taking the game to the Daggers they were having no luck finding a way through. Pilkington was called into action to make a good stop from Southam on the hour in a rare Dagenham attack in the second half. A shot into the ground by Clapham following a corner fell kindly to Edwards with twenty-six minutes left inside the six-yard box but Button was off his line and blocked the defenders effort. The pressure was being piled on, but Dagenham were holding firm when it really mattered. Michael Johnson bid a fond farewell to first-team football at Meadow Lane with fifteen minutes to go when he was replaced by Stephen Hunt. The defender left the field to standing ovation from all ends of the ground. He will bring down the curtain on his career next week at Wycombe. A minute after Johnson's substitution Gavin Strachan had a chance to pull a goal back for County but Button palmed his shot away. Jamie Forrester followed as a third and final substitute late on in place of Jamie Clapham. Ritchie put the gloss on the victory two minutes from time with a shot from twenty-yards that beat Pilkington's despairing dive and nestled into the far corner. County will round off their season

Defeats for Calverton Miners Welfare and Sutton Town AFC give Forest Town, the leaders and second placed Radcliffe Olympic the edge for the title in the Buckingham Insurance Supreme Division. Both Forest Town and Radcliffe Olympic gained 1-0 victories, Forest Town's winner being converted by Craig Jackson in the 10th minute against Southwell City, Radcliffe's all important goal came in the second half from Carl Westcarr, at Kinsley Boys. The head to head match between Radcliffe and Forest Town on May 9th becomes even more important as the season draws to its conclusion. A 2-1 win at Kimberley Town took Newark Town into third place, above Calverton Miners Welfare, but with only one match remaining this is the highest position that the Nottinghamshire club can achieve. At the Stag Ground Chris Self gave the visitors the lead at half time and they extended this through Craig Roche early in the second half. Matt Bedford pulled a goal back for the home team but they could not obtain an equalizer their overall play deserved. Calverton Miners Welfare crashed to defeat at Sutton Town AFC, after a goalless first half, goals by Lee Rhodes, Luke Shiels and Ben Greenhalgh gave the home team a 3-0 victory. Sutton's chances of taking the title was ended in midweek by a shock 4-0 defeat at Kimberley Town. Calverton's chances of the title hang by a thread and they will certainly have to win their last three matches to have any chance at all. Ollerton Town did not play but they can have a big bearing on the outcome of the title and could still finish has the runners up, they have both Forest Town and Calverton to play, both at home. Harworth Colliery Institute ended the season disappointingly but it must be said that they have been the surprise team in the Supreme Division and it's only in the last few weeks that they have slipped down the table. Their final game at Scrooby Road ended in a 4-0 defeat against Blidworth Welfare. James Tagg, Liam Best, Gavin Jackson and Lee Eason scoring the visitors goals. A goal romp ended Pinxton's league programme, both Jay Cooper and Daniel Marriott hit hat tricks and with further goals from Danny Evans, Wayne Cook and Josh Parker the Derbyshire club thumped bottom club Rolls Royce Leisure 9-0 at Watnall Road. Harrowby United ended their campaign with a share of the points

at Hatfield Main, the final score 1-1. Matt Bedford put the Yorkshire club in front, James Gyoury-Hales hitting the equalizer for Harrowby. Despite finishing second from bottom the Lincolnshire club has been good acquisition to the CMFL. A good win for Clipstone Welfare, they won 4-1 at Yorkshire Main, the home team are difficult opponents at home. David Manninfield put Main in front but goals by Chris Hewitt (2) and Richard Giles put the visitors 3-1 in front at half time, Carl Russo added Clipstone's fourth after the interval. Louth Town took a big stride towards the Black Dragon Premier Division title, they visited the present leaders Westella & Willerby and two goals from Kirk Crossley gave the Lincolnshire club a 2-1 victory. Alan Laud scored for Westella who still lead the table on goal difference but Louth have three games in hand. Third placed Parramore Sports dropped two vital points in midweek, only drawing 4-4 at home, against Welbeck Welfare, at one stage of the game Welbeck led 4-1 so in the end Parramore would probably been pleased to take a share of the points. Kirkby Town, who are fourth place, did not play today, but with five matches remaining they now have a great chance of at least third place above Parramore. Thorne Colliery took another step to finishing as the wooden spoonists they lost again, at home to Parkhouse, the visitors winning 4-0, all the goals came in the second half, from Matt Rhodes, Nathan Styles and a brace by John Parsons. Bulwell Town and Welbeck Welfare are likely to finish in the two other reelection places. Bulwell lost 4-3 against Church Warsop Miners Welfare at Goosedale Sports Club. Aaron Ross (2) and Remay McKenzie for Bulwell. Jason Edwards, Lee Bonsall and Connor Kelly, who scored twice, for Church Warsop. Welbeck shared four goals at Hutton Cranswick United, Lee Warriner, who hit a hat tick for Welbeck in midweek, was again the visitors 'star' getting both goals. Mark Davies and Mike O'Connell scored for the East Riding club. Two first half goals by Dean Wiffen and Matthew Shaw gave Bentley Colliery the points at home against Thoresby Colliery Welfare. In the Abacus Lighting Reserves Supreme Division the three leading teams, Carlton Town Reserves, Staveley Miners Welfare Reserves and Heanor Town Reserves all where without a game. Fourth placed Belper Town Reserves won 2-0 at Christchurch Meadows against Rainworth Miners Welfare Reserves. Tom Cooper-Richards and Sam Johnson the scorers. Second from bottom Radford Reserves enjoyed the result of the day in this division, Joseph Lowe, the Manager's son, hit four in his sides 6-1 win at Blidworth Welfare Reserves. Graham St Prims Reserves won by the only goal of the game at Shirebrook Town Reserves and Mickleover Sports Reserves accounted for Teversal Reserves winning 4-2 at Teversal's Carnarvon Street ground. Three teams are battling it out for the title in the Abacus Lighting Reserves Premier Division, leaders Southwell City Reserves lead the table by five points but the second and third placed teams, Yorkshire Main Reserves and Kiveton Park Reserves have two

Steve Osborne kisses the All England Trophy Scots Grey 4 Oyster Martyrs 3 All the pre-match build up was about Rooney, his brother, his cousin, uncle (how does that song go?) and of course what dress Collen would be wearing in the Directors Box. In front of a home crowd of over 2,000 Oyster Martyrs were favourites to pick-up the coveted All England Cup and title of England's Best Pub Team. But Manager, Steve Osborne seems to have instilled a “Never say Die mentality in the Grey's dressing room and not for the first time in the competition the Bulwell side came back from the brink of defeat to claim a historic victory. Scots Greys started the more nervous of the two sides, but soon got into their stride taking the 1st goal through Phil Bignall.

games in hand. Southwell dropped two points, only drawing 1-1 with visitors, Ollerton Town Reserves. A Craig Gould penalty gave Ollerton the lead, Dean Carpenter leveled for Southwell with seven minutes remaining. Yorkshire Main Reserves did not play but Kiveton Park Reserves donned their shooting boots at home against Nettleham Reserves, winning 5-1. Clipstone Welfare Reserves, who are in fourth place, won by the odd goal in five against Calveton Miners Welfare Reserves. A remarkable score line in the match between Pinxton Reserves and previous bottom team, Bulwell Town Reserves, the visitors who

Oyster then struck back and Rooney's brother, sorry cousin slotted a second for the Liverpool side and all looked dead and buried for the Nottingham outfit. Then in the 93rd minute up-popped Juree 'Peter' Staples with a header to take the tie into extra time amid boisterous celebrations in the Kop. Oyster must have thought they had already won and never recovered in extra-time soon going behind to two Alan Jefferies strikes, one from the penalty spot after a Bignall was hit by a sniper. Oyster now needed to show the kind of resolve that Scots Grey's showed in normal time, but they weren't up to the task, registering only a late consolation to make the tie 4-3. An amazing achievement for all connected with the club. So what can Scots Grey aim for next season? Defence of the All England Cup I hope.

NSL - CALVERTON ACADEMY CROWNED CHAMPIONS OF Nfrithmaa@aol.com NAA - ASHLAND ROVERS COMPLETE THE DOUBLE! DIVISION 2! Calverton Academy were crowned champions of the NSL Division Two after 2-0 away win at Keyworth Academy. Clayton and Croft strikes were enough to see Calverton claim the three points required and secure the title and promotion to go with it. In other Division Two results Linby res smashed seven past Cavaliers res, Luke Price amongst the scorers with a hat-trick and Magdala res for victors over Ruddington res, Haw, White and Ward all netting for Dala. The Senior Division title chase now seems to be a two horse one, after leaders Pelican eliminated Basford from the hunt. Blanchard, Gadsby and Eastwood goals saw Basford fall seven points adrift with just two games remaining in the campaign. Boots sit just one point behind Pelican and did their goal difference the world of good with a 7-1 thrashing of Caribbean Cavaliers; Gareth Rees (2), Smith, Jackson, Boulter, Saunders and Bakone all on the score-sheet for the Chemists. At the other end of the table Ruddington virtually guaranteed their Senior Division status with an impressive 4-2 win over Wollaton, who are chasing third spot. Paul Archer grabbed himself a brace and Wallis and Wadley also scored to open up a gap between Ruddington and the bottom two. Ashley Robinson scored a double of his own for Wollaton before being stretched off with a broken leg, although the former Rudd man is thought to be comfortable in hospital. Keyworth also secured another season in the Senior Division after two Alex Woolwich goals saw them beat Notts Police who now find their own Senior Division future at risk. Awsworth may feel a point wasn't enough in their battle against the drop as they were held at home by Hucknall Rolls Leisure. Start and Saxton scored for Villa but a John Greely double means Awsworth must fight on with just two games left to play. Finally Linby and Cotgrave played out the same score-line at Church Lane. In Division One Basford res were 3-0 winners away at Pelican res, Goodborough (2) and Haywood both scoring. Dean Morris scored for Clifton res in a 2-0 win away at Sandhurst and Wollaton res and Gedling Southbank res were both 3-1 winners over Kimberley and Matrixgrade respectively. Lastly, Cotgrave res and Linby res shared the points in a 3-3 draw at The Woodview. Report by Joe Fish

Ashland Rovers Reserves completed the double of league (division one) and senior cup this week when they comprehensively saw of premier outfit Beacon 4-1. Ashland took an early lead in the first half which they held on to until the first minute of the second half when Beacon pulled back an equaliser, this spurned Ashland back into action and they added three more goals to see them home, the goals coming from Ian Roe, Jason Coupe, Barry Lee and Ryan Smith. In the premier division F.C. Samba finished their season off with a 2-0 win over Headstocks Richard Francis and Ian Holloway scoring. In a thrilling conclusion to the season Kashmir claimed the second division title thanks to a one goal superior goal difference over the league leaders for most of the season Coopers Arms. Kashmir were given the opportunity to pip Coopers to the title after Burton Joyce beat Coopers in their final game 2-1 thanks to goals from Troy Smith and Jamie Powdrill with Daniel Morgan's effort not quite enough. Kashmir gave themselves a sporting chance off making up the vastly inferior goal difference when they saw off Nottingham Sikh Lions 8-1 in their mid week fixture and they needed to score heavily again in their final game at home to Arnold Town A, which they did running out 8-2 winners Adam Neilson (3), Shoib Manshar, Audly Miller, Moshin Amin and Nial Williams all scoring but the most important goal and the one that sealed the title was an own goal which saw Kashmir pip Coopers by a single goal. Nott'm Sikh Lions made up for their mid week thrashing at Kashmir with a comfortable 6-2 home win over Three Crowns, Govindar Singh (3) Mlkit Singh, Sandip Leihal and Aaron Mohamed all getting on the score sheet. Goals from John Frost and Jason Richards ensured Notts Metropolis ended their season on a high at Ali Islam. COMBINATION - GEDLING UTD CROWNED PREMIER CHAMPIONS AFTER THRASHING CALVERTON! Four goals for Kevin Walker coupled with 2 by Rusharn Bennett and a single by Nathan Ions gave Gedling United a midweek 7-2 home win over Calverton MW to be crowned Premier Division champions for 2008/09 with three games to spare. Then on Sunday they made it 18 wins out of 18 with a 4-0 win over Man in Space courtesy of Nathan Ions 2, Lorren Young and Jason Rimmell. Calverton also slipped to a midweek defeat by the same score line at Man in Space and still require two more points to guarantee runners up spot to Gedling after Kimberley MW slipped up when they could only manage a 1-1 midweek draw at Bestwood MW to put a dent in their runners up challenge. Beeston United completed their division One season by going down at DTD by 4 goals to 2 despite leading 2 nil at the break courtesy of Adam Morris and Scott Henson strikes but after the break they allowed David Hallam 2, Darren Cotterill and Will Hickling to score for the home side who drew level on points with their visitors towards the foot of the table. Springfield lost by the odd goal in 5 at Oakdale as they tried to finish the season on a positive note after being rooted to the bottom of the division for most of it. Timothy Parsonage and Connor brown struck for Springfield but any hopes of a win were dashed when Andrew Cordin netted three times for Oakdale to give his side a 3-2 win. Report continued over page

In goal lending his physical prescence is recent addition Dave Wardle. Club Captain Adam Bird usually plays at centre half in the Dave Watson mould of if it moves tackle it! The midfield is anchored by Martin Smith who talks his way through the 90 minutes berating his team mates, the opposition and the ref – all in the same passage of play! Up top is Ben Allision - Empals leading goalscorer of recent seasons-all blind side runs and poaching goals. Newcomer this season is striker Josh Croft he of the lighting pace and enthusiasm currently building his name at Calverton MW on a Saturday. Fox & Crown enjoy tremendous support from the Crown pub over in Lenton going back to 1996. Having joined the Empal back in 1993 Fox have enjoyed many years in then top Division way back to the Players home pitch days. Having lost two Empal cup finals in 2002 and 2006 as well as a County Cup appearance in 1998 Fox must be hoping their luck is due to change! Recent signing from Gedling Town Luke Richards has made a tremendous difference to the midfield. Scored goal of the decade against rivals Arnold recently. Top scorer is speedy striker Steve Fox with a goal every other game to his name. Kevin Spencer and Paul Charles boss the midfield with twenty goals this season between them! Defensively a strong unit playing week in week out namely Tom Atkins in goal with a back line of Steve Williams, Matt Dilger, Clayton Woods, Adam Cuthbert and James Lazenby. Tip for the Final? – 1-1 after ninety minutes then into the lap of the Gods! Report by Adrian Ford

NOTTS SUNDAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE - GREYS WIN THE CARLSBERG FA SUNDAY TROPHY! It's official; Scots Grey are the best Sunday football team in England. This was earned after a pulsating Carlsberg FA Sunday Trophy final at Anfield against Oyster Martyrs. The Bulwell outfit travelled to the backyard of the Merseyside based club and came away with a fantastic 4-3 victory, after extra-time. Scots started well and Allan Jefferies fired over in the first minute. However, Martyrs struck back and Graham Rooney (brother of Wayne) saw a freekick deflected just wide, before Jefferies had a close range effort tipped over. Greys went ahead after sixteen minutes as skipper; Mark Green's cross was mishit by Jefferies but fell invitingly for Phil Bignall, who fired home from ten yards. It was almost one-all, two minutes later but Ross Whalin superbly palmed over Latham's volley. Martyrs were applying pressure and only a brilliant last gasp goal line clearance by Luke Humphries denied Latham again. The prompting Mick Galloway put Andy Frawley in to the left of goal but the long server fired over and soon after the scores were level, with Greys conceding a soft goal. Martyrs won a freekick, twenty five yards from goal and Whalin was left rooted as Latham's poorly struck shot rolled agonisingly past him. Phil Bignall then saw the Martyrs' keeper hold his close range header, before Whalin redeemed himself by tipping Thomas Rooney's fiercely struck effort over the bar. The second period started in similar fashion to the first with the Martyrs keeper making a fine save to thwart Jefferies, followed by an equally fine save by Whalin as Murdoch's strike was heading for the top corner. Fifty five minutes had elapsed when Graham Rooney nodded home from close range as met he Austin's header back across goal from Smith's deeply flighted free kick. This inspired the Merseysiders and they enjoyed a period of supremacy as Scots struggled to get back on equal terms. With the clock showing two minutes of five added for stoppages, Bulwell's finest won a corner on the right and Juree Staples rose majestically to steer through a header from Mark Green's well directed kick. The game went into extra time, of which seven minutes had passed when Phil Bignall was hauled down in the area and the referee awarded a penalty. Alan Jefferies kept his head and steered the resultant kick beyond the diving keeper. Martyrs again applied pressure but their efforts left gaps at the back and with four minutes remaining Scots exploited this to give themselves a two goal cushion. Bignall was the instigator, steering a pass into the path of Jefferies, who advanced on goal and again showed a cool approach as he fired past the advancing Cannon and into the net. However, the game was far from over and with two minutes remaining Lipson reduced the arrears with a fine drive from the edge of the box. The remaining time was nerve-racking but as the referee signalled full-time, the celebrations erupted from the sizable travelling contingent from Nottingham, who had lifted their side with constant rousing support from the famous Kop. Domestically, Clifton Villa kept their chances of the Premier Division alive, as they travelled the lowly Nottm Alumni and emerged with a hard fought 4-2 win. Conversely, Clumber extinguished their remaining hopes of the title as they conceded the double to visitors; Nottm WI Cavaliers. A couple of goals each for Scott Boulton and Vladamir Farrell ensured Arnold took all three points by defeating Radford Park Rangers 4-1, who had James Starbuck scoring. It was tight in the game between Redhill and Trentside with the result determined by Tristan Spencer's strike for the latter. Nottm Rangers ended their season in style by scoring five, through Rob Doughty, Richard Danby, Dan Dougls, Craig Taylor and Kevin Crossman against New Fairham, who had Martin Radmall hitting their last two goals of the term.. KIMBERLEY DEFEAT NEWCOMERS ATTENBOROUGH! Clifton Village were at home to Papplewick where the visitors won the toss, decided to have a bowl and Clifton were all out for 304, one ball short of their 50 overs. Luke Fletcher top scored with 77 (6 fours, 3 sixes), Scott McNeill 65 9 fours, 1 six), Richard Harris 57 (7 fours, 1 six) and Papplewick bowler Jim Rhodes took 6-72. With a required rate of six per over Papplewick gave chase and all seemed well whilst the skipper, South African Martin Bekker, was at the crease, scoring 100 off 60 balls (10 fours, 7 sixes), but he fell to the bowling of Liam Andrews and the visitors then fell behind. They saw their 50 overs out finishing 230 for 8, John Wakeling 43, against a good all round bowling attack and a winning draw for Clifton. Welbeck, at home to Caythorpe, won the toss and batted first, making 226 for 6 off their 50 overs. An opening stand of 76 between Martin Dobson and Matt Higgins came to an end when Higgins (22) was caught off Stephen Randall's bowling. Dobson made 68 (8 fours, 2 sixes) before falling to Randall and Vikram Atri (47), going for a quick single, was run out by Jim Hindson (156-3, 38th over). Hindson followed this with 3 wickets, Guy Darwin stumped by Sam Ogrizovic, Rob French

LBW and Noel Gie bowled. Hindson finished with 3-61. Caythorpe opener's Guy Welton and James Hawley put together a stand of 221 for the first wicket, Hawley 88 (16 fours) adjudged LBW to Vikram Atri. Atri claimed a second wicket before Caythorpe hit the winning runs, closing on 227 for 2 with Welton finishing unbeaten on 86 (10 fours). Cuckney won the toss and put visitors Wollaton in to bat. They scored 279 for 7 off 50 overs, skipper Will Butler 66 (9 fours) and Dan Brown 51 (6 fours, 1 six) sharing a stand of 113. Richard Stroh took 3-57 and Tom Ullyott 3-63. Cuckney replied with a stand of 155 between Ian Dodd 112 (11 fours, 2 sixes) and Steve Allcoat 57 (7 fours) but it was not enough as Wollaton restricted them to 219 for 7 in 50 overs. Wollaton skipper Paul McMahon took 4-52 to secure a winning draw. Plumtree, hosts to Mansfield Hosiery Mills, had a disastrous start to the season. Having won the toss the home side chose to bat but were shot out for 102 with Keshera Jayasinghe taking 3 wickets for 5 runs and Saleem 3 for 29. Hosiery Mills then reached the required target in 27 overs scoring 105 for 2 with Hassan Adnan undefeated on 63. For their first Premier League game Farnsfield travelled to

the home of champions West Indian Cavaliers. The visitors won the toss and put the Cavaliers in to bat, posting a score of 210 all out on the final ball of their 50 overs. The runs were shared with skipper, Ricardo Anderson top scoring with 39. Alistair Gilbert took 3-38, Paul Franks 3-41 and South African keeper Damien Crowley weighed in with 3 catches and a stumping. In their reply Farnsfield's Michael Bell scored 51 (6 fours) but they could only amass 146 for 7 in their 50 overs resulting in a winning draw for the Cavaliers. Steve Atkinson finished with 3-25. The other newcomers, Attenborough, also faced a tough opening fixture at home to Kimberley. The home side won the toss and put Kimberley in to bat, scoring 227 for 5 in 50 overs. Dan Mason finished unbeaten on 88 (8 fours, 1 six), Greg Mike 62 (6 fours, 2 sixes) and Samit Patel 40. Skipper Andy Simkiss took 3-56 and keeper, New Zealander Shaun Fitzgibbon, took three stumpings. Attenborough's reply was led by Alec McKinlay 51 (7 fours, 1 six) but Kimberley bowled them out for 194 in 48 overs, Samit Patel taking 3-56, and a win for the visitors. Report by John Cusworth

CARRINGTON CARIBEANS SHOW INTENT!

and as have start.

There was a smattering of games on the unofficial opening of the season expected, Division B title favourites Hyson Green Carrington Caribs signalled their intentions from the

Caribs have assembled an impressive squad for that level and yesterday they put fellow newly promoted side Hucknall to the sword amassing 285. It was a good day for debutants as ex Unity man Monty Douglas struck 59, whilst the much travelled Nagasir Sookram responded with 6 for 46 with the ball. In reply, Hucknall were in with a shout at 109 for 1, but some tight bowling in particular from Kaisar Altaf and Taufseer Shah put the skids on and the home side, despite 85 from skipper Scott Harris fell short on 203 for 7. Clifton Village II who finished runners up in B last season carried on from where they left off with a ten wicket thrashing of Kimberley II. The home side managed 150 with all rounder Steve Bennett top scoring with 37. However Kimberley look a little light on the bowling front with Richard Adams being elevated to the first team to replace the departed Jason Gorman. Skipper James Griffiths' fears were confirmed as Anthony Hart (84) and Richard Harrison (61) knocked the runs off in just 27 overs. Shane Litchfield made a swift return to his former club Gotham and offered a catch first ball which Gotham spilt. Litchfield went on to make 47 and together with Julian Richardson (62) and John Harrison (48), Loughborough Carillon posted a daunting 247. The Haworth brothers of Alex (95) and Steve (45) made a valiant effort after tea but Division B KIMBERLEY INSTITUTE II 150/10 from 46.1 STEVE BENNETT 37 JOHNATHAN TERRY 30

the home side finished on 201 with the colourful Mark Gamlyn and Toby Waistling each grabbing three wickets apiece. In C Colin McConnell of Attenborough II recorded the divisions only century in their game at Kirkby Portland. However it turned out to be in vain as Anthony Booth (74*), Richard Underhill (45*) and Steve Betteridge (42) saw the victors pass the 237 target with seven overs to spare. Lee Houghton of Radcliffe II smacked an unbeaten 90 in his team eight wicket win at home to Plumtree II (183). However Lee had to share centre stage with 17 year old Lily Brown who took 4 for 53 in Plumtree's innings. Collingham II were no match for a strong Gedling and Sherwood II side in G who totalled a whopping 358 thanks to John Gell (123), Carl Blake (86) and Paul McMillan (47). Collingham could only muster 86 in reply as Gerry Cruise helped himself to a five wicket haul. Newly promoted Whatton and Aslockton made the perfect start bowling out Gotham II for 67 and passing the target in just ten overs. For the winners Alex White (4 for 28) was the chief destroyer. Belvoir are currently preparing for their first stint in the top flight in eight years. They have attracted a number of new

go and record 107. Assisted by Paul Rockey (50) the visitors racked up (215). Keyworth lost star batsman Geoff Tindsley with a dislocated shoulder before the reply began, nevertheless Andy Cowlard hit a boundary off the final ball to notch up a fine 100 as Keyworth fell 24 runs short. ACADEMY BACK WITH A BANG AS THE NEW SEASON FIRES OFF! Making their first appearance in the league since 1998, Notts. Academy (formerly The Colts) announced their arrival with a bang as they destroyed Bridon at Ordsall by a mammoth 176 runs. From the moment they took to the crease on a near perfect wicket, runs flowed like a tap gushing water and when 50 overs were complete, they stood at a staggering 307 for 2 with Sam Wood making a magnificent entrance with a brilliant unbeaten 152. In addition Akhil Patel batted supremely well in making 83 and West Indian Kevon Cooper crashed it around at will to finish on 40 n.o. as the run chase continued. Bridon must have been delighted when the umpires called innings closed after facing a torturous run chase which showed little sign of relenting. The reply actually started extremely well and Bridon reached a promising 77 for 1 before the wheels fell off big style. Only Aaron Haycock (38) carried any threat as Adam Shepherd (4 for 25) and Akhil Patel (3 for 23) sliced through some tame resistance to dismiss their rivals for a disappointing 131. This was a great start for The Academy and Bridon will enjoy better days because they won't face a team as good as this every week. It's too early to say what will happen but on this evidence The Academy look a potent force and it will take a team right on top of their game to trouble them. Just down the road at Retford, the home side must have been celebrating as they piled up a colossal 280 for 8, only to see Killamarsh who were relegated from the Premier League last year, eclipse that with an astonishing 281 for 7. Retford were rather under strength with their Australian import yet to arrive, but you wouldn't have noticed this as the replacements did a fantastic job particularly with the bat. Over the winter months the club have put in weeks of work to improve the wicket and it certainly showed as it resembled a real shirt-front and the outfield was like plate glass, once it was through the field, their was no hope of catching it. John Cook made a brilliant unbeaten 107, whilst Chris Bowers (55), Pascal Broadley (33) and Sam Shepherd (31) all made hay as the sun shone as Killamarsh were given a real chasing and only Rodney Cook with 3 for 78 made any impression with the ball. This score looked good enough to test anyone, and when Killamarsh stood 20 for 2, it looked only a matter of time. However a fantastic captain's innings from Adam Whiteley who batted magnificently and never looked in the slightest trouble as he reached an unbeaten 119 put them in command. Paul Burdett gave splendid support with 67 and Killamarsh won the match with three balls remaining in a game which was a real credit for Bassetlaw Cricket. Another game of fantastic quality took place at Park Avenue, Glapwell, as opponents Kiveton Park managed to hold on to a winning draw with just two runs to spare. Matt Hall the Glapwell skipper totally wrecked the top order batting of Kiveton with an astonishing burst which had them reeling on 64 for 5 with Hall taking all the wickets. It needed a good stand and this was forthcoming from Tim Ward who went on to carry his bat for a spectacular unbeaten 139 and Richard Spurr (30) who added 102 in good time to rescue the innings. The tail wagged as well and Kiveton finished on 234 for 9 which was a lot more than it looked like being at one time. Matt Hall took 6 for 35 and deserved his success for an accurate and penetrative stint. Danny Bircumshaw (35) and Lee Topham (33) got Glapwell away to a good if a little slow start and the run rate eeked upwards alarmingly as the Kiveton attack took a firm hold on proceedings. Skipper Lee Brooks reeled away remorselessly at one end taking 3 for 78 from 15 overs. At one stage the rate had crept to almost nine per over required but a lot of credit must go to Ricky Csomer (51 n.o.), Jeff Wharton and Shaun

Johnson who with some audacious shots got Glapwell back in the game. Glapwell started the last over needing twelve to win and scored nine of them. It was a real thriller and neither side deserved to lose this classic encounter. Promoted Caythorpe 2nd moved away to a brilliant start as they overcame fancied Edwinstowe by two wickets to register a superb win. Batting first Edwinstowe managed a highly respectable 212 for 6 with Australian Joe Burns (61), Paul Benson (45), Tom Ward (33) and Aaron Rhodes (35) all making good scores. Unperturbed, Caythorpe set about the task very well and terrific efforts from Chris Elisha (76 n.o.) and Richard Beaumont (62) saw them squeeze home to victory on 216 for 8. This was a fantastic start for the new boys to this division against a side who will no doubt win many more matches than they lose. Anston the other promoted side found it not so easy as they were beaten by five wickets at Marshalls. Batting first, Anston reached a respectable 224 all out, with John Lyne top scoring on 85. Marshalls popular skipper Paul Van den Heuval showed once again what a good cricketer he is taking 6 for 74 and excellent support was gleaned from Australian import Joe Allen with 2 for 48.; This score proved nowhere near enough as Marshalls sailed to victory and once again Van den Heuval showed his ability with a fantastic 127. Joe Allen again showed he might be a major asset scoring 38 and Chris Hearn was unbeaten on 44 as victory was achieved. The Gainsborough side were always likely to provide a severe test to Anston and they might well have been considered to have been unfortunate to have drawn them in their very first match at this level. The last match in this section saw Thoresby Colliery eclipse Notts. & Arnold Amateur by 48 runs. Batting first, Thoresby reached a competitive total of 241 all out with skipper Martin Cheshire (72) and Nyeem Ahmed (77) both scoring very heavily. Ian Flood once again bowled brilliantly for Notts. & Arnold taking 6 for 57 in an excellent stint of accurate bowling. In reply, Notts.; & Arnold made a bold effort scoring 193 before being dismissed. Rohan Shah (35) and Peter Evans (67) both batted very well but a fine spell by Muzaffar Usman (4 for 34) was the difference between victory and defeat as Thoresby clinched a hard earned twenty points. In Division 1, Mansfield and Pleasley raced away to a great start with a comprehensive five wicket win over Worksop. Batting first, Worksop made an unflattering 145 all out with Chris Taylor (66) and Glen Pym (40) both batting well, but without much support. Ian Woodall (5 for 25) was the major thorn in their side and nobody looked comfortable against him. In reply new signing from Anston, Patrick Gada got Mansfield & Pleasley away to a good start with an impressive 53. Great support came from Matt Page (35) whilst Luke Ambrose the Worksop skipper tried in vain to turn the tide taking 3 for 30 as Mansfield & Pleasley eased home on 149 for 5. A real thriller took place at The Fieldings with Mansfield Hosiery Mills vanquishing promoted Thoresby Park by just one wicket. Only Andy Siven made much impact with a dogged 38 whilst Darren Johnson (4 for 39) and Daniel Kilvington (4 for 17) bowled excellently for the Hosiery Mills as they bowled Thoresby out for just 152. Even this meagre total proved difficult and had it not been for man of the match Darren Johnson (48) and Ryan Weaver (35 n.o.) the result could have been very different. Paul Hulme (3 for 34) produced a good hostile spell, but Hosiery Mills just got there on 153 for 9 in an epic struggle. Welbeck 2nd moved away to a very impressive start beating North Wheatley with Leverton by 107 runs. A division best of 240 for 8 put them well in command against their promoted rivals with Jamie Jevons (77), Tom Richardson (39) and Mark Richardson (31) all batting superbly to enhance their total.

Jamie Sizer (3 for 27) and Jamie Bovill (3 for 50) both bowled well but support was lacking elsewhere. Only Jon Loates (52) put up much resistance as Welbeck bowled very impressively to dismiss Wheatley for just 133. Greg Herbert (4 for 9) and Reece Wyborne (3 for 42) bowled well and Welbeck on this sort of form should enjoy a very good season. Papplewick & Linby 2nd moved away to a good start with a winning draw against Blidworth who were hanging on desperately at stumps. Papplewick batted first and made 193 for 8 with Gareth Blenkhorn top scoring with 50 and excellent support coming from Chris Briggs (33). Daniel Willcock (3 for 34) bowled impressively for Blidworth but one got the impression that this was a rather good score. After a good start from Chris Dove (30) and Karl Mayes (59), Blidworth rather capitulated as wickets fell at regular intervals. They finished holding on at 158 for 9 with Chris Briggs (4 for 13) and Martin Mitchell (3 for 22) causing most of the damage but the final wicket proved elusive as Papplewick registered a winning draw. Another match which saw a side hanging on took place at Elm Avenue where Ransome and Marles held out against West Indian Cavaliers. Batting first the 'Cavs' totalled 212 for 9 with Kamran Afzaal (80) and Mohammed Massood (61) providing the bulk of the runs. Ransomes attack looked quite potent and Paul Taylor (3 for 35), Gary Lambert (3 for 39) and Sean Kelly (3 for 51) shared the spoils in a fine display. This target proved far too much for Ransomes though and they could only make 135 for 9 with Ian Sellars and Nigel Murray (70 n.o.) being the saviours. Umar Zamman (3 for 9) was the pick of the 'Cavs' attack which tried everything to complete the victory but were thwarted by some dogged resistance at the end. Relegated Waleswood found life at this level isn't milk and honey as they were beaten by a determined Whitwell side. Waleswood batted indifferently to reach 179 for 9 with only Asa Khayer (38), Aktar Khan (46) and Gareth Davis (28) resisting the Whitwell attack in which Ian Dennis (4 for 26) was very impressive. Having stepped down from the captaincy, Alan Draycott looked as though he was back to the supreme best he showed a few seasons ago as he stroked his way to a brilliant unbeaten 83 and was aided and abetted by Tom Chester who also batted at the top of his form to make an unbeaten 63. Waleswood skipper Martin Long took 3 for 2 but it was only a token gesture as Whitwell cruised to 183 for 6 and victory by four wickets. Report by Paul Barker - Full results over page

CALVERTON & ARNOLD DISTRICT POOL LEAGUE -CHERRY TREE SECURE TITLE! Divison 1 Balfour Club Railway Volunteers The Eagle Divison 2 Cherry Tree B Calverton MW Carlton Liberal Club

4-8 Victory Club 5-7 Cherry Tree A 7-5 Spot On B 3-6 Major Oak 5-4 Royal Oak 4-5 Arnold Liberal Club

There were some amazing scenes and comments at this week's Game Of The Week as Corey Beckham finally lost his title of Best Turned Out In The Paddock, after Tosh Ledgard pipped him by turning up in a new, rather fetching cerise coloured cap-sleeved shirt, claiming his mum had mistaken him for Brad Pitt, when she brushed his hair and wiped his face before leaving home. Then new Cherry Tree captain, Tony Wyatt outrageously claimed they had definitely now won the League, after their victory at the home of Lowdham pool, over their local rivals Railway Volunteers and finally, to add insult to injury, after winning his eighth successive game, Ian “The Body” Owen taunted the rest of the League players with a cry of “I'm so much better than everyone else, I'm beginning to think I should turn professional. Certainly I should be charging the opposition to watch me play!” . . . Indeed. At The Eagle, Malc Grocock was to blame for Spot On B's defeat after refusing to travel to the hills of Arnold, citing several dubious excuses for his non-appearance before finally admitting, “I just don't like 'em.” The match itself saw yet another defeat for trainee snooker player, Mark Taylor, despite him getting a record 22 break in practice before the match, and also two losses out of two for new star signing, ex Welsh international Chris Porter, who was somewhat shockingly picked ahead of several long-standing players, leading to a reported element of friction in the camp, which new captain, Dave “Clarkey” Clarke will have to keep an eye on if he is to keep his merry band of men together for the rest of the season. For the away team, Super Mac was left scratching his head at what to do next, after three successive defeats has blown apart his team's title challenge and leaves them on the brink of a relegation battle. Reports that he is trying to beat The Eagles' recent World Record have been dismissed by sources close to the under-fire Hucknallite but please watch this space readers. In the battle for second place (believe it, it's true), Alan Gregory's Balfour Club, with the Liverpool / Arsenal game being shown in the background, entertained the Kev Laneless Victory Club, with the visitors coming out on top, despite an early match wobble. Balfour started well and raced into a 3-1 lead but then a series of strange selections by stand-in captain, Glen Dyer, including picking himself, saw Chris Winson's boys win seven of the last eight legs to secure a comfortable two points. In Division Two, Major Oak continued their impressive 100 % start with a comfortable win at Cherry Tree B, with only Carlton Top Spot Let Down, Keith Hodgkinson, their only singles loser and that amazingly to Andy Behindthebar. Despite finally winning a game, ex county star, Matt Coates still lies a lowly seventh in his own team averages and now has it all to do if he is to even attempt to defend his Averages Title at the end of the season.

The Railway Inn

In Carlton, the battle of the Liberal Clubs saw Arnold edge through on top despite a winning debut by new signing, county junior star, Daniel Binks and just when you thought it would never happen, a win by his county captain, Demi Barber. It was all to no avail though as the form book was well and truly turned on it's head as even the crazy Anthony Blagg, fresh from his outlandish City Leisure League challenge, managed a rare win. Whilst on the subject – when do you want to play and how many legs start should we give you to make it fair? I believe you've got my number . . . Elsewhere in Division Two, Calverton Miners Welfare continued their recent good run with a hard fought victory over British Royal Oak, who have since announced a change in venues for the rest of the season – after being asked for ID in their last home game, they have apparently now chosen to play at the Youth Club down the road. Arnold Liberal grab another point at home to the Dale, super S Simm put the Liberal 4-3 up, but the experienced head of T Brett (Dale) levelled it up at 4-4 with a point going to each side. Moot also came from behind against Marketside, who's new signing veteran P Green put them 4-1 up, but Moot showed real guts to pull it back to 4-4 with 'King' D Ward winning the last leg for the Moot, again a point to each side. Bilko reborn under new captain Swayze - Thorpe beat ex-tree Greg Crowsfeet to guarantee the visitors a point 2 in 2's from debutant Mick Egan, Olly Brookes, Gaz Sherwood & Kurdish means there could be selection problems for Swayze next week when Tandoori Taylor and Farmer Leese return, but me thinks Storm will gather strength during the season and will upset a few of the top dogs when they start to gel. Final score 5-7. Premier new boys Greyhound came a cropper 10-2 in Calverton as Brian Robinson rattled in an 8-baller for Cherry Tree models in the

Micky Bent gained scant consolation for the Arnold boys against Phil Oliver in the singles as did Steve Blower and 'Bob' Monkhouse in the pairs against part time hair model Tony Wyatt and Bob Taylor. Rileys One put Park Tavern A to the Sword on their own patch in the p*** soaked streets of Basford. England star Liam Stanley has stepped down as captain under mounting pressure after last seasons runaway Premier One win was seen as scant reward from the galaxy of stars at his disposal. Hobbo stepped up to the plate and delivered that much needed 5-7 win for the beleaguered Riley's immigrants against Harry Hill's cup holders. Loz Sanderson was seen staring into suit hire shop windows on Saturday after being sick to his high teeth of wearing bridesmaid dresses. Premier Two Debbie Ballam took the first frame against C Stapleton as Riley's B new boys tackled Sun Valley Ladies. Things quickly went downhill for the Clifton babes from then on, as they capitulated 11-1. But looking at the Riley's B line up they could take some beating this season and are installed as joint bookies favourites with plate winners Sun Valley. Plate Runners-up Sherwood SC recovered from 3-6 down to draw against Park Tavern Langham. Wayne Scarborough and Colin French took the final frames for Sherwood in a close fought match. Kerry Griffiths and Alan Shaw both won 2 legs for the visitors as ladies singles bi-annual winner Paula Smith had a double blank losing in the final frame to Frenchy senior. Come-backs were obviously the order of the day as Crusader drew 6-6 against Carlton CC after initially going 0-3 down. Crusader crucially lost all of the pairs leaving T.Lees to salvage a point in the final leg against Carlton's D Mckay. M Winfield took the MOM award with a quality away double win. Competition sheets need to be in by 3rd May. Notts Open Premier Pool League – End of Season 20082009 Round up Premier One. Liam Stanley's Spot On One claimed their 2nd successive Champion of Champions place as they cruised to the Premier One title unbeaten in Nottinghamshire's most competitive league. Masters were bridesmaids again, where selfproclaimed bestist captain ever - Loz Sanderson, failed to find his own personal Holy Grail, whilst Steve Hills Tavern 'A' could only manage a disappointing 3rd place – may as well be last eh Steve? Rileys finished a creditable fourth after a poor start with surprise package Royal Oak claiming the 5th spot. The biggest shock of the season was one-trick pony Cherry Tree only saved from relegation by the league restructuring – languishing at the foot of the table for most of the campaign despite being able to call on ruthless finishers like Trevor Chambers and Tosh Ledgard. Taverns John McMahon was the only 100% player in all divisions. Premier Two. Greyhound won the two-legged race with Friar Tuck, both teams were promoted to Premier One in what panned out to be a fiercely contested campaign. Gregory came bottom narrowly beating Sheriffs for the wooden spoon. Top of the averages was Sun Valley's Brian Walker (must have been a few gimme's there Brian!) Premier Three. Hubble Bar took the div 3 Title losing only one game all season. Carlton Catholic Club came in second faltering late on after an early season challenge. Sun Valley Ladies came a disappointing last and will hope to win at least one match in the new season. Top of the averages was A Horrey. DIVISION 1 City Hospital Leisure Centre blew their chances of securing runners-up spot after going down 1-4 to BCI 'E' in a rearranged match. The Bulwell side still have another rearranged match to play against Spot On Hucknall and they will need to win it 5-0 to make sure of the runners-up place. It should have been all over, but Sherwood Social Club 'A' went down 1-4 at home to Spot On Hucknall in another re-arranged match. Sherwood just needed one more frame to take second place but their failure to do so may prove costly. DIVISION 2 Spot On Sneinton have finished runners-up in division 2 courtesy of an excellent 5-0 away win against Nottingham Forest Sportsman Social Club. Ironically it was Howitt that Stan beat in the final this time. For the record, two players hold 3 titles, Chris Chadwick – who won 3 back to back titles and John McMahon. Presentation and Cup Final night The KO Cup final was contested by cue-chucker - Loz Sandersons' perennial bridesmaid Masters, and Steve Hills Park Tavern 'A'. Fifty pairs of eyes thwarted Jay Wards attempt at surreptitiously manipulating the balls when he thought no-one was looking against James Hill in the first leg. That set the scene as the banter reached fever pitch with James claiming the first scalp for Tavern. Dave Atherley took the second frame for Tavern only for Masters to come back strongly through Paul McNichol and Matt Coates. At 4-4 the final frame was crucial and Simon Thompson responded first to the pressure in a tactical affair against John Brinkworth. 'Thommo' had Brinks' pants down (ooh Matron) but as in the semi-final Brink turned the game on its head to give the 'of late pot-less Tavern' a much-needed trophy. In the Plate final Sun Valley defeated Sherwood Social Club culminating in a tense final frame decider. The match swung pendulum like with some unforced errors in the later frames proving decisive. At 3-3 some controversial - the ref knew the rules – refereeing almost saw Sun Valley drop a crucial frame through Mark Featherstone who fouled off a frozen ball; Colin French promptly fell off his cue - not touching a cushion gifting the frame and the lead to Sun Valley. Sherwood levelled the match through D Ahern leaving the two captains' sons Mark Peel and Adrian French to play the captains leg! Report by Gary Sherwood

DIVISION 1 Beeston Snooker Hall won a doubles frame decider to reach the play-off final where they will meet The Peoples Hall. On paper the match looked hard to call and so it turned out to be with neither side ever being able to get 2 frames clear. Chris Brooks put Pegasus one up in a very close frame against Neil Jones with the Beeston man conceding after fouling on the pink. Clint I'Anson who has finished top of the league averages this season knocked in a good 31 break to help see off Pegasus's Jamie Mathers to level the scores. Beeston's latest signing Tom Walters cleared from the yellow to see off Danny Castel-Nuovo and put Beeston two one up but Mike Langdon was comfortable in his frame against Shane Kidd winning by some 40 points to level the match once again. Some friendly banter between Steve Booth and Beeston's Chung Cheung helped to relieve the tension as the final two singles frames got underway. Booth never looked a doubt in his frame but Pegasus youngster Eric Towle was struggling to find the pockets and Beeston's Chris Hodgkinson capitalised with some solid potting building up a healthy 30 point lead from which Towle never recovered. This meant with the match all level that the result would be decided by a make-orbreak pairs frame to see who would reach the final. The impressive Tom Walters got straight into the frame with a good 24 break from which the Pegasus pairing of Chris Brooks & Jamie Mathers never really seemed to recover from. Walters effectively sealed the frame late on with another well-taken 20 odd break to book his team a place in the play-off final. The play-off semi-final between sixth placed Stadium Leisure and The Peoples Hall who finished in third place was held at Pegasus Snooker Club. Stadium were without Barry Stark and Bob Walker but they still mounted a decent challenge. Daniel Di Folco got Stadium off to a dream start defeating Nav Hussain in a black ball game 51-48. Mohammed Zubair pulled Peoples Hall level with a 62-34 win against Steve Butler. Zeb Ahmed was in good form, making a 36 break on the way to an impressive 52-12 win against Matt Ellis. Yas Abbas and Clary Plowman provided some good light hearted

entertainment for the crowd in a close frame which eventually went the way of the Peoples Hall player 54-28. With The Peoples Hall now leading 3-1, either John Marshall or Yasir Hussain had to win to secure victory for their team. Hussain was no match for Stadium captain Pete Gormley who ran out a 56-32 winner. It was left to John Marshall to make sure of the victory for The Peoples Hall with an almost faultless display against Ross Wilkin. Marshall won the frame 61-15 to put his team into next week's final. DIVISION 2 Mapperley Community Centre and Phoenix Cue Sports will contest next week's division two play-off final after resounding victories over Oakleigh Lodge Social Club and Lenton Liberal Club respectively.

OUTLAWS SECURE A FINE VICTORY IN FIRST HOME ENCOUNTER! Nottingham Outlaws 55 Warrington Wizzards 22 Nottingham Outlaws played their first ever home match in the Co-operative Conference National division on Saturday when they entertained high-flying Warrington Wizards. In a scintillating display the Outlaws sent out a warning message to the rest of the league with a superb 52-22 victory over a team that finished at the top of the division last season. In a performance brimming with power and pace, the muchfancied Wizards were simply blown away in an 11-try demolition job that no doubt has sent shock-waves through the rest of the competition! The Outlaws went into the match expecting a tough encounter. The Cheshire outfit won all but two of their games last season, finishing at the top of the pile before losing in the play-offs to Celtic Crusaders. Indeed, the Wizards were labelled as one of the "big three" teams in the league alongside Featherstone Lions and hot-favourites Bramley Buffaloes. With this in mind, many of the Outlaws faithful were hoping, rather than expecting, that the Outlaws would at least put up a good show against such exalted opponents!

The omens didn’t appear too great at the start of the match when with less than a minute on the clock Outlaws full-back Will Thomas was knocked-out cold making a tackle. As the stricken star received urgent medical attention, Warrington's winger Adam Gorman seized on the numerical advantage to scoot over to put the visitors in front. The conversion was a formality and at 6-0 the home side had got off to the worst possible start! Stunned by this reversal, the Outlaws stormed back up the field looking for a riposte and with 7 minutes on the clock the Outlaws opened up their account with a superb Paul Calland try. The club captain took the ball in a somewhat innocuous looking position on his own 20 metre line and shaped to pass before dummying and sprinting through a gap. With the line broken, Calland set off on a foot race to the line. It seemed likely that the cover defence might haul him down short but the wiley play-maker just managed to evade the chasing pack and dived in at the corner for a magnificent solo effort that reduced the deficit to 4-6. With the Outlaws starting to gain ascendancy they began to ask more questions of the Wizards defence. Leading the way in the opening exchanges were the Outlaws pack who began to exert their authority on their opposite numbers. With each drive the Outlaws forwards began to make deep inroads to

the Warrington defence with rangy second-rower Bryn Waldram and powerhouse prop Si Perry standing out as the Outlaws began to dominate. With the early nerves calmed and the forwards on top, the Outlaws went in search of points and they were soon in front when on the 8th minute Si Perry proved too big and too strong for the Wizards defence. The powerful prop simply barged his way over after a tap penalty under the posts was pushed out wide to the right flank where the Loughborough starlet was waiting to pounce and he crashed over to put the Outlaws ahead 8-6. It was a lead that the Outlaws would not relinquish for the remainder of the match! Young prop forward Si Perry continued to trample over the visitors every time he got the ball, making huge inroads into the Wizards defence and he soon bagged another try as stand-off Paul Calland dummied to pass before turning the ball inside to the rampaging Perry who again used his size and power to carry 2 defenders over the line with him to stretch the Outlaws lead to 12-6 which Calland then pushed out to 14-6 as he coolly added the extras. As the match reached the mid-way point in the first half, the Wizards at last began to find their much-vaunted attacking flair. The visitors forced the Outlaws to conceded back to back sets in their own 20 metre area and the pressure finally told when a lovely handling move down the Wizards back line saw winger Troy Alison squeeze over in the corner. The conversion was missed but at 14-10 the game was still up for grabs and the Outlaws knew that they still had a lot of work to do if they were going to take anything from the game! With the match in the balance it was time for the Outlaws backs to start to pose more of a threat. They were led down the left flank by whirlwind centre Tom Tsang who began to tear open a rapidly tiring Wizards defensive line. The young centre was playing in only his third match for the Outlaws but he is already showing what a superb attacking force he is at this level. Time and again he ripped open the Wizards defence and after one such sizzling run out of his own 20 metres he offloaded to Strachan who charged down the pitch before unloading to Rob Brown. The Outlaws hooker had a clear run to the line and the chasing defence had no chance of catching the Derby Bomber who dived over for his first try of the season. Again the extras were added and at 20-10 the Outlaws had a healthy lead. As the first stanza drifted to a close, the Outlaws backs continued to cut the Wizards defence to ribbons. Tom Tsang was having a field day on the left flank as he terrorised his opposite number with his pace and speed off the mark. Meanwhile, over on the right centre, powerful Aussie Myles Rutherford was taking a more-direct route through the Wizards defence! The Queensland Express simply steamed through his opposite number to score 2 quick-fire try's, the first coming from a lovely handling move down the backline and the second coming from a short range effort as the Brisbane powerhouse barged his way over despite the attention of two Wizards defenders. Unfortunately both conversion attempts drifted agonisingly wide but the Outlaws had the comfort of a healthy 28-10 lead as the referee drew the first half to a close. The Outlaws returned to the field for the second half, conscious that last weeks game against Bramley had effectively been lost by a poor period directly after the re-start. They knew that they could not afford a repeat performance this time round and a good start to the second stanza was essential if they were going to win the

match. And this time they got one! Once again the Outlaws backs led the way and just as it was at the end of the first half, it was Rutherford doing the damage.

This time the powerful Aussie showing he could also create ties as well as score them as he slipped a lovely pass to pacey winger Roy York who squeezed in at the corner to make it 3210 and the Outlaws had got off to the sort of start that they had been looking for! Despite the great start, the Outlaws went through their customary sticky patch as they began to overelaborate and try to force passes when a simpler approach would have paid dividends. As a result the Outlaws play became somewhat ragged as they continually dropped the ball and handed over cheap possession early in the tackle count. Such generosity was well received by a grateful visiting attack and The Wizards used the glut of possession to score a converted try to close the gap to 32-16 and the game was clearly not in the bag! With the Outlaws lead shrinking and still 25 minutes to play, the game was in danger of slipping away, especially as the Outlaws had lost Si Perry, Will Thomas and Oliver Crick who were all now injured leaving only 1 sub left on the bench.

Lord Mayor of Rushcliffe awarding Martin Crick Continued from page 16 By contrast, The Wizards confidence was most definately rising minute by minute as the visitors felt they now had the sniff of a chance! With the Outlaws urgently needing to reimpose themselves they needed a hero to step forward and they found one in the shape of loose forward Simon Morton! The ex-Sheffield Eagles star has battled back from a crippling knee injury that forced him to take a 2 year absence from the game and after only 3 games in the Outlaws colours he is already becoming a firm favourite with the fans! The tireless loose forward grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck! The rising star latched onto a short ball from Jimmy Lewis and a combination of good footwork and upper-body strength saw the Outlaws lock-forward dive over for a try that took the Outlaws lead out to 36-16 which was stretched to 38-16 as Calland converted. The Morton try not only had the effect of settling the home nerves, it also caused the Warrington heads drop visibly as they knew that any chance of a mini-revival had been well and truly snubbed out! The Wizards did manage the next score to peg the lead back to 38-22 but it was a brief interlude as the remainder of the match was virtually one-way traffic! With the game seemingly in the bag, the Outlaws

much-vaunted attacking machine went into overdrive! The fitness and speed of the Outlaws was clearly evident as they tore holes in a rapidly tiring Warrington defence. Next over the white wash was Rob Brown who went on a mazy run across the face of the Wizards defence, shaping to pass but stepping off his right foot as he scorched through the flailing defence for a well-deserved second try of the match and then Ben Radford capped a fine display when he somehow managed to pop up on the left wing to finish off a superb handling movement that stretched the Outlaws lead to 46-22. With the clock ticking away it seemd like that was the end of the proceedings but there was just enough time left for the Outlaws to break through the half centurey mark! It was perhaps fitting that the final try would go to the effervescent Tom Tsang who had by far his best game in an Outlaws shirt to date. The rip-roaring centre was on hand to take the money ball after a superb break by rookie winger Phil Lucas and he sauntered under the posts to wrap up a great day at the office for the young centre and bring up the half century for the Outlaws. Calland converted and the referee mercifully drew the match to close with the Outlaws holding an emphatic 52-22 winning margin. Immediately after the game, coach Martin Crick was in ebullient mood, adding "I always felt

this was a game we could win, but to be honest the sheer margin of our victory has taken me by surprise. It was a great attacking display, the pack were excellent and my backs were superb, especially the centre partnership of Tsang and Rutherford who I thought had a fantastic game. However, there is still much work to do on defence and we will be working on this in the next two weeks" The Outlaws coach then threw down the gauntlet to the rest of the league, when he was asked how the Outlaws were shaping up to life in the big league, the wily Yorkshireman answered simply "we are in it to win it!". As the Outlaws players waited to hear who had won the prestigious man of the match award, any one of half a dozen players were seen to be in the reckoning. In the pack Rob Brown and Simon Morton had worked tirelessly and the centre pairing of Tsang and Rutherford had terrorised their opposite numbers. However, there were no complaints when Adam Millward continued his monopoly on the man of the match trophy as he bagged his third award in the opening three matches of the season. Without doubt the Staffordshire Hit Man continues to blow away all who stand in his path! Next week the Outlaws have a well-earned break before they resume action on the 9th May with a trip to Liverpool.

Cometh the 12th, cometh the man!

Nottingham's Carl 'The Cobra' Froch defeated Jermaine Taylor to retain the WBC Super Middle Weight Belt. In a spectacular fight which saw 'The Cobra' knocked to the canvas in round 3, Froch rallied and stopped his man with just 14 seconds remaining in the final round. Froch arrived in America with many of the home support wondering who this man was form the land of Robin Hood. But make no mistake by the end of an enthralling encounter the American sporting public now know who 'The Cobra' is and no doubt can't wait for his return. The fight started with Jermaine Taylor firmly stating his 'bad intentions' showing quicker hand speed and an array of combinations early on, which at times seemed to have Froch rattled. The pressure was on and in the third Froch took three right hands, the last an overhand right which took him down for the first time in his professional career. He got up quickly on an eight count admitting afterwards that he had not seen two of the shots coming. Thankfully there was little time left in the round for Taylor to continue and as the bell went, as it turned out, so did Taylors best chance of winning the fight. Taylor it has to be said was landing his jab more effectively but Froch was game and tried to counter with his trademark

low left attempting and mostly failing to surprise his man. The superior hand speed of Taylor seemed to stem the flow of Froch's more powerful punches in the early rounds. By round eight Froch was again rocked by some fast combinations but by this time seemed to have weathered the storm. From the eighth round onwards Froch began to make in roads and the fatigue, which he was banking on pre fight, seemed to be taking its toll on Taylor. As the fight wore on Taylor attempted to steal rounds yet Froch kept coming and his power was beginning to tell. In the dramatic final round Froch finally got to Taylor – a left and a right finally

putting Taylor down in the corner. The American got back up on 9 counts but Froch sensing victory and not much time left on the clock wadded in with fifteen unanswered punches. Sensibly the referee looking to prevent any further unnecessary damage dived in and stopped the fight giving The Cobra his first defence and most importantly opening the door to the World market! After the fight Froch said 'I backed my intuition that Jermain Taylor was tired, He was badly hurt and not defending himself. He wasn't even looking at me, it was a great decision by the referee. My trainer Rob McCracken told me and I knew I had to have a big 12th round and I got it. Jermain Taylor was world class. This was my first defence in America and the first of my big fights." In a fitting tribute Taylor's promoter described Froch as strong as an Ox and someone who just keeps coming. The Cobra now moves to 25-0, with his 20th stoppage inside the distance, while Taylor dropped to to 27-3 with one drawn, losing for the third time in his last four fights. Perhaps now the UK Broadcasters may me tripping over one another to air Froch's second defence? What a shame we had to sit in front of our computers to witness one of the greatest middleweight defences ever by our only current World Boxing Champion.

Famous 8th Holly Well

REVIEW OF NOTTS GOLF CLUB Location & description: “After being too long away I lately went back to Hollinwell, which, as all the golfing world knows, or ought to know, is the course of the Notts Golf Club,” wrote Bernard Darwin in an article for Country Life. “On one side of it, there runs a pleasant wooded path by a series of lakes, and by this path Byron used to walk from Newstead to see Mary Chaworth at Annesley. Behind the course stands a hill covered with bracken from which Robin Hood used to watch for signals at Nottingham warning him that the Sheriff was setting out in pursuit. These are romantic circumstances, and I thrilled as I was told of them.” History: Hollinwell is so called because there is a holy well located amongst the trees close to the 8th fairway. Water from the well is said to lend much needed strength to the golfer, especially during the heat of summer. One of the British Isles' finest inland golf courses (currently ranked 9th in the inland rankings), Notts opened for play in 1887, originally designed by Willie Park Jnr. Modifications (primarily to bunkering) were later made

The 18th Green at Hollinwell by John H Taylor, to whom the club paid the princely sum of five guineas for his services! The bunkers at Notts are relatively shallow, unlike some of the cavernous bunkers found at Woodhall Spa or Ganton. Perhaps the price of sand was factored into Taylor's wages! The course: The course plays across wonderfully undulating ground where some of the fairways sweep through wooded hillsides and where others run through heather, fern and gorse clad valleys. Unusually, there are a number of varieties of gorse at Notts, and even in the depths of winter, you will find some in flower. The course feels very much like heathland (the soil is sandy and the turf is spongy), but it also has a moorland flavour and a touch of woodland. Despite the varied landscape, this attractive course comes together really well and actually gets better and better as you progress from hole to hole. It is also worth mentioning that a great deal of effort is being put in to encourage the heather to return to its former glory. Signature holes: The pick of what is a long course, which is over 7,000 yards, has to be the 582 yard sixth, a great par five, the 408 yard eighth and the 13th, a terrific

Health & Fitness with Martin Gooden Strength & Conditioning Coach & Personal Trainer

This was significantly higher than the Scandinavians' WHY DO KENYAN ENDURANCE RUNNERS RULE THE WORLD? -total and is much higher than anything European and This week BallsMania has teamed up with Concepts Personal Training Coach Martin Gooden who will talk about interesting sports topics each week. This week he begins by discussing the dominance of Kenyans in long distance running. This is part one of 3 in an interesting series of articles. It's a well known fact that Eastern African runners, in particular the Kenyans, have been dominating the distance running world for years and there have been many reasons put forward to explain why. However no one has really been able to settle upon any one particular explanation, which has lead to wide-scale confusion and often inaccurate or unfounded conclusions being drawn. This case study provides you with a clear and concise review of the theories behind Kenya’s dominance in endurance running. Each fascinating theory is complemented by an explanation so that by the end of the review you will be left with the ultimate guide to Kenyan success, for example: Born at altitude The most common reason put forward for the Kenyan

and, more particularly, Kalenjin dominance of global distance running. Certainly, being born and living at the thin air at around 2000m helps. Athletes find themselves stronger, particularly when returning to the abundant oxygen at sea level. Are Kenyan’s genetically superior endurance runners? The most revealing study on this topic was carried out by the renowned Swedish exercise physiologist, Bengt Saltin, who compared Kenyan adolescents, Kenyan high school runners and elite Kenyan adult runners with toplevel Scandinavian runners. Saltin unearthed a number of important facts. 1) Kenyan adolescents had exactly the same aerobic capacities as Danish teenagers. - If the Kenyans were really genetically superior, you would expect them to have a higher VO2max than their Scandinavian counterparts. There is hope for us all yet! 2) Young Kenyan runners trained with astonishing intensity: About 50 to 60 percent of their total mileage was done at heart rates of 90 percent of maximum or higher!

American runners generally do. This suggests that their training, rather than their genetics, are responsible for their success - this is something you can incorporate! 3) Kenyan runners - including the high schoolers - were more economical than the elite Scandinavians and also produced less lactate during high-speed running. - One of the best ways to boost economy is to train fast, and the Kenyans have the corner on intense training. - Fast training boosts the aerobic qualities of fast-twitch muscles and lowers their lactate output. This explains why the Kenyans have lower lactate levels during strenuous running. 4) The progression in VO2max values from adolescents to elite adult runners is the same in Kenyans as it is in Americans! BUT as high school Kenyans become elite senior runners, they increase their number of blood vessels per muscle cell and also enhance the concentrations of energy-producing aerobic enzymes inside their muscle cells.
