We all knew it had to happen eventually. Forest's first defeat of 2009, and the first under Billy Davies' management, came on a choppy afternoon in South Wales. Davies was left with no choice but to field a patchwork Forest side for this afternoon. The return of Cohen and Morgan gave a timely boost, but the team was tearing at the seams before the game had started. For 18 minutes we staged an admirable impression of a team with no blemishes to mention, but Cardiff's opening goal was a hammer blow. It always looked a long way back from there. The visiting supporters, in the strongest possible voice for the opening 18 minutes, were left brooding over the reality of defeat. Forest's performance degenerated in tandem. Gaps at the back became chasms, and individual errors became increasingly regular. Long balls for Tyson were the spirited but futile response. And through all of this, Forest were at no stage outclassed by a very ordinary Cardiff side. The famous Cardiff supporters remained fairly unmoved too; their cauldron of horror and intimidation struck me as more like a drop-in centre for the mentally ill. Forest scrapped,

Attendance: 4,953 Notts County suffered their first home defeat of 2009 with a 1-0 reverse at home to Chesterfield this afternoon. Drewe Talbot crashed home the only goal of the game with a superb effort in the latter stages of the first half for the Spireites after a long spell of Notts pressure in the Chestefield half. Notts pushed continually for an equaliser and John Thompson clipped the woodwork late on. The visitors battled out the final stages with ten men after Danny Hall picked up his second booking of the game. Manager Ian McParland reverted back to the team that defeated Port Vale 4-2 last Saturday at Meadow Lane after the 3-0 defeat at Rochdale in midweek. That meant handing a recall to Michael Johnson at the heart of the defence in place of Stephen Hunt reverted back to the bench. Mike Edwards also shook off a dead-leg that forced him off in the first-half at Spotland to start. On a bitterly cold afternoon Notts attacked towards the Haydn Green Family Stand and started brightly. A free-kick from Hamshaw on five minutes put the visitors under pressure and Delroy Facey's header took a deflection and fell into the grateful arms of Tommy Lee inside the six yard box. On seventeen some neat link-up play between Nowland and Forrester opened the door for Nowland to have a crack at goal,
hassled, battled and harried, all despite the shackles of a referee determined to blow up for every 50-50 and shoulder barge. The problem was the lack of chances. Tyson was starved all afternoon, latching on to scraps and wayward headers with little effect. Many thought his determination had brought us an equaliser when he beat keeper Peter Enckelman to the ball, but the referee had made up his mind to disallow the goal almost before contact was made. Cardiff's second was an almost inevitable response to Forest's subsequent sulking. The home side were organised and confident, but something tells me they were not at the races today and a below par Forest side was never more than a stride behind. Under sensible management we are clearly only two or three players away from being extremely comfortable in mid-table. Whether we will get them remains to be seen. Match Ratings: Smith – 6 – a quiet afternoon. No particularly difficult saves to make. Chambers – 6 – another extremely hard-working display, undermined by familiarly poor positioning. Morgan – 7 – a welcome return. Breckin – 7 – solid enough overall. Wilson – 6.5 – a reasonable game despite being marooned on the left. McCleary – 4.5 – we know all about his potential, and he was excellent on Tuesday night, but this was a horror show. Balls were bouncing off him as if he hadn't played the sport before. McGugan – 6 – dire set pieces and wasted one or two opportunities with scuffs, improved in the second half. Perch – 7 – vanished a few times but returned to make some important tackles. His sideward passing can be frustrating and unnecessary, but recently it has played into Davies' hands perfectly. Thornhill – 7.5 – one of his best performances for the club. Came into his own with plenty of graft and some decent movement. Cohen – 7 – plenty of work but not as much craft. Allowed his frustration to get the better of him in the end. Tyson – 7 – did ok on his own, but the partnership he has been working on with Earnshaw wasn't particularly evident with Garner. Subs: Garner – 6.5, Moloney – 6.5 Report by Alex Campbell but Lee turned his left-footed effort over the bar for a corner. Notts suffered an injury blow just afterwards with Nowland having to be replaced due to injury - which meant an early introduction into the game for Nat Wedderburn. Jamie Clapham flashed an effort wide on twenty-five with Notts looking the more likely to open the scoring after a good spell of pressure in the Chesterfield half. Chesterfield's first note of any note came on the half-hour through striker Martin Gritton who blasted a shot well over the bar from thirty yards. A scuffed shot by Wedderburn fell kindly for last Saturday's hat-trick hero Jamie Forrester inside the box ten minutes before the break, but Lee was quickly off his line and he blocked the striker's effort on goal. From the resultant corner Mike Edwards scuffed an effort wide as Notts remained in control. But totally against the run of play the Spireites took the lead through Drewe Talbot as they broke on the counter attack. A neat ball by Jack Laster picked out his strike partner Drewe Talbot, and he crashed a superb twenty-yard effort beyond the despairing dive of Lillis and into the back of the net. Notts had a great shout for a penalty five minutes before the break when Forrester looked to be brought down by Robertson in the box, but Mr Swarbrick waved away Notts' appeals. The Magpies began the second half in search of a quick equaliser, and John Thompson's powerful volley was well blocked in the early stages of the half. Lester dragged an effort wide for the Spireites from around ten yards out when well placed, but Notts were still enjoying the majority of the possession. Notts were retaining the ball for long periods, but just seemed to be lacking in the final third but they continued to plug away. The Sprieites were sitting

back with two banks of four and were making it hard for Notts to find a way through. John Thompson came close ten minutes from time with a speculative effort from Nat Wedderburn's scuffed shot, but he hit the outside of the post and ball trickled behind for a goal kick. Eight minutes from time the visitors were reduced to ten men when Danny Hall collected his second booking of the game for a foul on Hamshaw. It prompted Notts into a late change with Sean Canham replacing Jamie Forrester up top. Balls were pumped forwards at every opportunity by the Magpies to put Chesterfield under heavy pressure, but Notts simply couldn't find a way through the sea of red. Notts must dust themselves down quickly from the disappointment of today with Gillingham visiting Meadow Lane on Tuesday evening.

NSL - WOLLATON GO 6PTS CLEAR AS THE POLICE SHOCK CAVS! Wollaton stretched the gap at the top to six points with a home win against Kimberley MW. First half strikes from Roy Sharpe and Matt Hogg gave the leaders a two goal advantage at the break. Kimberley had brief hope when Jake Fisher scored a penalty, his 16th of the campaign, but Sadler restored Wollaton's two goal advantage, enough to see them claim a comfortable win and with Pelican and Boots out of action give themselves some valuable breathing space. Notts Police produced the result of the weekend with a convincing 5-1 win over Caribbean Cavaliers. Sloan and Hendry with two each for Police, and a Dean Fenton strike gave Police their first win in seven, and in turn ended Cavaliers unbeaten run. Hucknall's good run of form was also finished after a defeat by Keyworth. Tead, Cut and Woolwich strikes for Keyworth but Jonathan Wiss scored a consolation for Hucknall, their first defeat in six. Basford continue to impress, bouncing back from defeat in their last outing with a hard fought 3-2 away win at Linby. Willows, Oakes and Geurboauy all netted for Basford whilst goals from Campbell and Todd weren't enough for Linby who remain 7th. Basford stay fourth, nine points behind Wollaton, but with three games in hand. Attenborough picked up a crucial win at home against Clifton and in some style too. Birtles, Towerzy, Oldham and new signing Baker were all on the score-sheet in a great win for Boro. The match was played at Green Lane due to Attenborough's usual home ground being waterlogged. Cotgrave CW won by the same score-line, courtesy of goals from Vipond, Penley, Shaw and Draper giving Cotgrave their first win in three. In Division One Bulwell's title challenge suffered a blow after defeat by Matrixgrade despite Duane Haywood's 25th goal of the season for the leaders. Anthony Buck and Craig McMorran were the scorers for Matrixgrade, to give them a brilliant 2-1 win and inflict only Bulwell's second defeat of the season. Gedling Southbank res and Sandhurst are Bulwell's nearest rivals, and took advantage of the leaders' loss by both picking up home wins. Sandhurst were comfortable 4-1 victors against Bilborough Town, Gav Mason amongst the goals whilst Gedling had to work harder for their win against Wollaton res, 3-2 thanks to Kemp, Rhodes and Thomson. Paige and Hinds the scorers for Wollaton. Gav Haines netted a hat-trick for Greenwood Meadows as they thrashed Clifton res 6-1, Stokes, Srookman and Webster rounded off the win. Kimberley were also in the goals with an excellent 5-1 home win against Underwood Villa, Doherty and Koziello both with doubles for the away side and Boots res and Bilborough Pelican res played out a 2-2 draw. Finally in the only division two game, Ruddington res and Hucknall res shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw. Foster for Rudd whilst Jackson replied for Hucknall. Report by Joe Fish.
MAA - PINXTON SPRING A SUPRISE ON SOUTHWELL! Ashley Swain's strike for Pinxton North End earned his side a 1-1 draw with Southwell Amateurs who now lead the Premier Division by a single point after second placed Woodborough United trounced TVFC 9-0. Michael Nester plundered five goals for United whilst Ryan King netted a hat-trick leaving Sam Lamb to complete the tally. Old Elizabethans were 51 victors over Nottinghamshire. Recent signing Andy Jones netted the opener for O.E.s against the run of play and Joe Major's 45th minute goal completing the first half scoring. Liam Goward's double put the match out of Notts' reach before Rhed Spencer's success from the penalty spot reduced the arrears only for Paul England to restore O.E.'s advantage with a rasping drive. Goals from Mark Byant and Craig Young for Steelers increased Monty Hind Old Boys' relegation worries in a 2-0 scoreline whilst Wollaton III still prop up the table after being pipped 2- 1 by Beeston OBA. Nottinghamshire II are the new leaders of Division 1 having scored more goals than second placed Crown Inn Selston, who have an identical goal difference to Notts but have played three games fewer. This leaves Beeston AFC II, who have the same points as the other two but with an inferior goal difference in third place. Crown had a hard fought 3-2 victory over Bassingfield whilst Radcliffe Olympic III succeeded in holding Beeston to a 3-3 draw. Hat-tricks featured in both games with Stephen Froggett's effort for Crown matched by Richard Varney's for Beeston. Meanwhile Marco Static's two goals for Notts helped his side to a 4-1 victory over Eaton Hall College. Acorn Athletic are two points behind the leaders after putting three successive defeats behind them in completing a 5-1 victory over Wollaton IV who conceded a double to Scott Allen as well as goals to Marek Smith, Lee Cumberland and Warren Sheldon. Calverton Miners Welfare III's 3 – 2 defeat by EMTEC leaves the two sides swapping places at the foot of the table with Calverton now holding the wooden spoon. West Bridgford United ended their four match losing streak with a surprise 5-1 victory over Lady Bay whilst two first half goals from Chris Thompkinson and Danny Archer enabled Old Elizabethans II to claim the double over Derbyshire Amateurs II. Nottinghamshire III are the new leaders of Division 2 following their 5-1 defeat of Chilwell Vipers with Terry Watson's hat-trick doing the damage. Previous incumbents Southwell Amateurs II had to come back from 2-1 down against Coronation, whose two goals came from Joe Parker, to produce a second half equaliser and gain a share of the points. Long tem leaders Broadmeadows are third as a result of their remarkable 6-6 draw with Kirk Hallam SC. Michael Stevenson netted a hat-trick whilst brother Martin added to the tally for Kirk Hallam which was completed by Jamie Hawkin's double. Pulling back from 3-0 down Kirk Hallam levelled at 5-5 before missing a penalty, then took the lead only to concede a final equaliser. Nuthall Athletic are now level on points with Broadmeadows following their 3-1 defeat of Ravenshead Rangers with Jonathan Leverton's double and Colin Brown's strike earning the points. 'Johno' Reid's and Ben Griffiths' goals were sufficient for Sherwood Colliery to defeat Tibshelf Community who failed to reply. Goals from Steven Burns, Will Enderby and Chris Chamberlain saw Hickling through to a 3-0 victory
over Town Mill whilst Moshin Arshid's goals for Old Bemrosians was answered by four from Cambridge Knights. Report by Norman Frith

NOTTS SUNDAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE - REDHILL IN COMEBACK TO SECURE SECOND PLACE! Arnold FC went into their Premier Division encounter with leaders; Scots Grey in a positive mood following a lengthy unbeaten run. However, albeit they created a number of good chances, they failed to find the net and went the way of others, they fell to goals from Luke Humphries, Terry Hawkridge, David Ward and Juree Staples. Redhill moved into second place, although they made hard work against basement outfit Nottm Alumni, epitomising the cliché 'a game of two halves'. Trailing to three first half goals from Andy Dodd(2) and Anthony Simpson, they responded with a 'last kick of the half' goal by Lee O'Dowd and then scored another three from Craig Boulton, Mike Rees and Ben Middleton in the second period to clinch the victory. Clifton Villa recovered well from their last minute defeat to Scots Grey to record a fine 5-1 success at Radford Park Rangers with Justin Jenkins netting a hat trick, supplemented by efforts from Rowan Hines and Antwon Bonnick, with youngster; James Starbuck replying. It was one-way traffic as Plough Barfly's entertained Nuthall and hammered TWELVE past them without response. Dave Marlow led the way with four, whilst Alan Potter and Joe Ashurst grabbed two each and it was one apiece for Charles Noblet, Simon Marlow, Ricky Hodgson and John Sheriff. There was a time of reflection at the start of the Nottm WI Cavaliers and Clumber game as the players paid respect to the memory of Liam Munn who had played for both sides prior to his untimely death. Cavaliers 'keeper was the hero as he saved an early penalty and the game was immediately transferred to the other end where Mari Staff opened the host's account and went on to complete a fine hat trick, supplemented by strikes from Adrian Tucker and David Pennant, as Carl Westcarr grabbed the consolation. Division One leaders, Chesterfield Arms stumbled to a 3-2 reverse at the hands of Stratford Haven giving the chasing pack, including their conquerors the chance to close the gap. Carl Wilson and Eddie Draper scored for the table-toppers but that was eclipsed by two goals from Alan Alvery, and another from Matt Greenhalgh. A couple of strikes from Luke Parkin and one from Andy Start ensured that Rolls Royce Leisure Sunday did not miss the opportunity to take closer order, as Mat Rick replyed. Grant Redwood hit two as Trowsers also took advantage of the leaders demise and with Arron Bagguley also on the scoresheet, they beat Old Colonial 4-0. George Street were the only side of the chasing pack to fall, surprisingly beaten 3-1 at Carlton Catholics, who had Ricky Sheavills, Ian Farrow and Darren Oldham registering to Matt Lucas' fruitless repost. The remaining fixture resulted in stalemate, as goals from Clifton Centrals' Aaron Stuart and Paul Harrison were balanced by Joshua Cranery and Adam Chenery of BTSC. Matt Hallam netted four and Chris Galloway three as Cotgrave PFC reached the pinnacle of Division Two in style by hammering Nottm Rangers 9-0, with Shaun Jackson and Matt Rinkert adding to Ranger's demise. Vernon Villa Sunday extended their current winning run to five with a 4-3 win over Rolls Royce Leisure Villa, who, with this defeat failed to go top. Liam Evans scored twice and Aaron Simpson and Matt Sims once for Vernon, whilst Adam Brown, Ashley Winfield and Danny Hayes replied. Newark Alliance Report over page

Non-league round-up - Games played 31st January Everton 7 Nottingham Forest Ladies 0 Forest were well and truly beaten on Sunday as Everton thrashed the Reds by a whopping 7-0. In Forest's worst defeat this season the toffees delivered a cruel lesson in shooting and converting chances as Forest failed defensively to absorb Everton's onslaught. Forest are in clear trouble as they linger in the bottom two of the table and an obvious lack of confidence continues to snowball for Lisa Dawkins squad of players. Whilst Forest started brightly and contained the Toffees for the opening twenty minutes heads went down when Jill Scott opened the scoring on 25 minutes. Everton were nothing less than superb and played the ball well with Fara Williams orchestrating key moves in the centre. Further goals from Fern Whelan and Natasha Dowie saw Everton in a strong position at the half time whistle as Dawkins attempted to revive a belief for the Visitors to take hold of the game and reduce the deficit for the second 45. Dawkins could do little to prevent Everton continue to improve on their tally when collectively they dominated for second half. Forest's Nat Staneff's head Gary who saw injury Ricketts was aggravated fromred the again previous Sunday's game and was substituted with Lyndsey Cunningham filling the role. Cunningham did well but shots from both Everton's Emily Westwood and Natasha Dowie increased Everton's lead to 5 by 65 minutes. Dawkins gave Forest's Dani Duffy a chance to change things for the remainder of the half as Forest desperately tried to prevent any additional goals. Duffy's contribution lasted less than ten minutes as the youngster's volatile temperament got the better of her as she was shown a yellow card. Lack of control fuelled Duffy to continue her rant and she was duly awarded a resulting red card leaving the rest of her team mates to fight with a reduced number as a consequence. Heads further down and with only ten players Forest deteriorated as Everton's Michelle Evans and Isabelle Christensen took advantage of the situation to finish the scoreline at 7 goals in the hosts favour. Forest Manager Lisa Dawkins said: "Everton gave us a master class in the game and certainly capitalised on a recent vein of form. They spread the ball so well but the key lessons were in their clinical shooting and four of their goals came from outside the box. We made mistakes of course but I think any team would struggle when Everton play in that kind of form." Dawkins continued: "Of course they have a team full of internationals and that is bound to show pedigree on the field but there were a few bright moments for us along the way . We just didn't look as though we had the belief to convert them - ultimately I cannot hide from the fact we were beaten well by an excellent side. I am, of course, disappointed with the red card incident which weakened us further as a consequence and I think there are some players that need to take time and some self reflection to stop apportioning blame elsewhere other than themselves before we regroup and attempt to prepare for our next game."
JOKE OF THE WEEK! AFFAIRS! The 1st Affair A married man was having an affair with his secretary. One day they went to her place and made love all afternoon. Exhausted, they fell asleep and woke up at 8 PM. The man hurriedly dressed and told his lover to take his shoes outside and rub them in the grass and dirt. He put on his shoes and drove home. 'Where have you been?' his wife demanded. 'I can't lie to you,' he replied, 'I'm having an affair with my secretary. We had sex all afternoon.' She looked down at his shoes and said: 'You lying bastard! You've been playing golf!'
Eastbourne Borough 1 Mansfield Town 2 Teenage sensation Scott Garner scored his first ever goal for Mansfield, as Stags came from behind to beat in-form Eastbourne at Priory Lane. The 19 year old is already being hailed as one of the best defenders in non-league, and his commanding performance at the heart of the Stags defence this afternoon only strengthened that accolade. Manager David Holdsworth tweaked the formation; adopting a 4-3-1-2 line up, with Michael Blackwood on the left, linking off the front two pairing of Tomi Ameobi and Rob Duffy. James Kay, Curtis Woodhouse and Tomi Ameobi also found a fresh place in the starting 11. But Stags didn't get off to the best of starts. Eastbourne broke the deadlock with their first real charge at goal in the seventh minute. Dan Smith was clean through on goal down the middle following a flick on by Andy Atkin, and as onrushing goalkeeper Alan Marriott blocked Smith's initial shot, he could do little about the second effort. As the ball came back in across the face of goal, Atkin was on hand to head into the net - with James Kay unable to keep the ball out, standing on the goal line. Eastbourne were beaming with confidence following the opener and Dan Smith may have doubled their lead five minute's later. But his left foot shot inside the area was well saved by Marriott, as he got down well to deny the home side. Stags had to withstand heavy pressure on their goal, and encountered some nervy moments. Eastbourne delivered their fourth corner on 19 minutes, and Stags managed to clear the ball, following a scramble in the goal area. Mansfield registered their first corner seven minutes later. Blackwood's outswinger from the far side found the head of Rob Duffy, but his effort sailed harmlessly wide from ten yards. On 29, Curtis Woodhouse curled in a left footed free kick, but the ball clipped the top of the Eastbourne wall. Manager David Holdsworth attempted to alter Stags' fortunes 15 minutes from the end of the half, replacing Aaron O'Connor with James Kay, moving Curtis Woodhouse to left-back, and the change paid dividends. Stags tried to up their game following a slow start, and they found their reward towards the end of the first period. With Mansfield beginning to press, their much-needed equaliser came with nearly the last kick off the half, and it changed the complexion of the game. Matt Somner's superb pin point cross from the right was whipped into the area, and captain Jonathan D'Laryea, rushing goalwards, managed to stab the ball home from eight yards. The leveller gave the Stags new found confidence, and they entered the second period with an extra spring in their step, raising the tempo of their game in the process, with Aaron O'Connor blazing wide on 52 minutes from outside the area. Stags recorded two corners in the opening ten minutes, and their were some apprehensive moments for home goalkeeper Lee Hook, who looked uncertain as the crosses came flying into his area. Town were in control in the opening stages of the second half, in complete contrast to the first period. And He was horrified at the ugliest child he had ever seen. He told his wife: 'There's no way I can be the father of this baby. Look at the two beautiful daughters I fathered! Have you been fooling around behind my back?' The wife smiled sweetly and replied: 'Not this time!'
The 3rd Affair A mortician was working late one night. He examined the body of Mr. Schwartz, about to be cremated, and made a startling discovery. Schwartz had the largest private part he had ever seen! 'I'm sorry Mr. Schwartz,' the mortician commented, 'I can't allow you to be cremated with such an impressive private part. It must be saved for posterity..' The 2nd Affair So, he removed it, stuffed it into his briefcase, and took it A middle-aged couple had two beautiful daughters but home always talked about having a son. 'I have something to show you won't believe,' he said to They decided to try one last time for the son they always his wife, opening his briefcase. wanted. they continued to press. Striker Rob Duffy turned to shoot on the edge of the penalty area, forcing a diving save from Hook, who managed to cling on to the ball at the second attempt. Another chance fell to Duffy, this time on 69, when Michael Blackwood's free kick on the edge of the goal line was whipped in to the edge of the area, but Duffy was unable to get his header on target. Louis Briscoe came on into the action on with 17 minutes left to play, replacing Tomi Ameobi. Matt Somner then struck goalwards on 75, following excellent build up play, but his powerful shot flew over the target, as Stags' efforts on goal continued to mount. Their pressure paid off three minutes later. Blackwood's free kick from near the goal line on the left, found the head of defender Scott Garner, whose bullet-like header thundered into the net from eight yards. Substitute Simon Wormull delivered a free kick from the right and Ben Austin should have done better as he powered in on goal, but his header cleared the bar. Stags had to experience another nervy moment on 89 minutes. An Eastbourne free kick from the right was deflected onto the post by Jonathan D'Laryea, and it was at the that time when Mansfield knew the football gods were with them. With three minutes of stoppage time left to play, Rob Duffy was replaced by Anthony Howell. Eastwood Town 2 Whitton 1 Paul Cox was able to field virtually an unchanged team from the one that beat Bradford Park Avenue last week. Paul Robinson's enforced change allowed Alistair Asher to reclaim the usual right back slot. Witton brought in new signing John Lawless to make his debut, while Neil Black returned after being cup-tied in midweek. Richard Dunning tried his luck from 25 yards which custodian Greg Smith made a hash of but recovered before any Eastwood forward could take advantage. The linesman's flag spared Lindon Meike 's blushes after he failed to convert a good cross from Ian Holmes after Ross Gardner, Anton Foster and Alistair Asher had created the space. A free kick from John Lawless almost deceived everyone but Shane Redmond was on hand to push the ball out. The effervescent defender Brian Pritchard was alert to prevent Holmes from getting a dangerous cross in. Shane Redmond spared the Badgers with an acrobatic save from Lee Thompson whose overhead kick from six yards out was palmed away for a corner. Holmes went close with a flicked header after good work from Anton Foster and Andy Todd. Minutes later he was inches away from meeting a lovely Meikle cross. A moment of brilliance almost unlocked the dogged Witton rearguard as Todd took the ball on his chest 25 yards out, turned and volleyed a dipping shot that just cleared the crossbar. When two Eastwood players got in each other's way trying to get onto Hume's flicked head the referee gave the first of a serious of inexplicable decisions as he awarded a free kick to Witton. From a corner Sturdy, Gardner and Todd all had shots charged down as the Badgers tried to press their superiority. The goal finally came in the 30th minute and it was an opportunist goal from Ian Holmes that broke the deadlock. Lindon Meikle chased a lost cause and won a corner. Richard Dunning found the head of Simon Sturdy which was stopped on the line. As the Witton players failed to clear, the ball spun loose to Ian Holmes who rolled it into the corner of the net, for the opening goal. Matt Rhead replaced Ross Gardner who was ill at half time, and he came close to doubling the Badgers lead seconds into the second half but Pritchard was on hand to clear up. Hume did well to clear a good Lawless cross and when Holmes squared to Foster it seemed the Eastwood midfielder would score his first goal but Smith saved well. Pritchard did well to take the sting out of Rhead's shot after Foster had won the ball. Lawless tried his luck from 35 yards but failed to test Redmond, and Scott did well to tip the ball away from Rhead's head as the big striker seemed destined to score. Witton were enjoying a lot of the ball without over stretching the Badgers defence but it was the Badgers who were enjoying the best of the goalmouth action. A carbon copy of the opening goal almost doubled the lead but Paul Booth cleared. Greg Scott saved Witton with a superb save from Matt Rhead after Lindon Meikle's back heel had released Richard Dunning. Thompson should have equalised for Witton with a free header from a corner but he won the penalty that got Witton back into the
Non-League Football game moments later. From a free kick both Thompson and Black had shots charged down and as the ball balloon up into the air, Thompson on the edge of the box knew what he was doing and backed into the onrushing Cooke, crumpling as though he had been shot. The referee bought it and Joe Lawless sent Shane Redmond the wrong way. It didn't take the Badgers long to restore their lead when Lindon Meikle won a corner, Brian Pritchard cleared Dunning's corner but Meikle won the ball, slipped it to Holmes who cut inside the fullback and curled a delightful shot over Scott into the corner of the net. Time and time again the referee and his linesmen frustrated the Badger's faithful, a quick interchange between Todd and Homes directly in front of me saw the official on the far side flag a fully three yards back from where we stood. Paul Williams' outstretched leg stopped Meikle adding to the lead, and Rhead headed wide from Todd's cross. At the other end, Lawless sent Kieran Lungsden through but he chipped well over (the referee gave a corner!) Foster had the ball in the back of the net after Gary Scott stopped Ian Holmes determined run but one of the officials saw something that escaped the 546 crowd. Another three points were secured without the Badgers getting out of first gear. We are certainly making a habit of winning important games without playing at out best. The bad news for our neighbours Matlock, Worksop and Buxton is that although Witton were largely toothless up front, they play some decent football and will probably get out of trouble. They put up a spirited display but had the officials been stronger and clamped down on the theatrics' it wouldn't have been so close. Spalding 1 Carlton Town 2 Carlton Town had to work hard to gain all 3 points on a heavy sticky pitch at Spalding. Carlton dominated the first half with the lively Aidan Brady causing the home defence problems with his wing play constantly getting behind his full back but his crosses gaining no reward from the strikers Steve Chaplin and Darryl Chaplin. Again in the second half Carlton had most of the play but failed to make the important break-through. However after 67 minutes Carlton took the lead after a Willis Francis free kick was fumbled by Spalding keeper Richard Roberts. Skipper Mike Martin was on hand to snap up the rebound. After 73 minutes Carlton made it 2-0 when substitute Steve Akers was tripped in the penalty box and Thomas made no mistake with the penalty kick. Spalding pulled a goal back two minutes later when Martin Wormall lashed home a powerful shot from the edge of the box. Harworth C.I. 2 Newark Town 3 Newark Town bounced back from last week's disappointing performance with a convincing win at a bitterly cold Scrooby Road to give them the double over the current league leaders. Town were boosted by the return of two influential players, captain Gareth Dobb and Dave Issott both recovering from injuries. After a quiet opening, Craig Roche had Town's first chance, but his shot from just outside the area didn't trouble the keeper. Newark were then unlucky not to take the lead six minutes later, when a good cross by Matt Roche hit Simon Ellison's knees and went narrowly wide. On 22 minutes, the home side enjoyed a moment of good fortune, when a low cross from Simon Ellison deflected off Harworth captain Gee and went inches wide of the post, when it could so have easily have been an own goal. Matt Roche headed wide from the resulting corner in a crowded goalmouth. This was a good spell of pressure for Newark, but otherwise the play was restricted to the middle third, with neither side dominating. Harworth took the lead on 31 minutes with their first real opportunity, when Newark lost possession from a throw in, a long ball found Paczkowski, who took the ball to the edge of the area and hit an excellent curling shot into the top corner. Town responded well to this setback, Mark Ellison's superb free kick being saved well by Wibberley on 34 minutes. The Blues got their deserved equaliser five minutes later, when a Sam Wilford cross found Simon Ellison, whose shot went in off the post. Harworth got their noses in front just before half time, when Steve Carty brought down Paczkowski in the penalty area, giving the referee no choice but to award the penalty. Black converted the spot kick, sending Chris

Newark started the second half strongly, and could have levelled, when an overhead cross by Craig Roche found Mark Ellison, who controlled well and hit his shot narrowly over the bar. Town almost fell further behind a minute later, when good interplay between Humphrey and the impressive Paczkowski saw the latter go through on goal, only for Riley to make a brilliant stop to concede the corner. As the half wore on, despite Town dominating for long spells, they were failing to find the killer ball, and not creating clear cut opportunities. It took until the 71st minute for Newark's pressure to pay off, when Mark Ellison played a square ball to brother Simon, who easily beat Wibberley to level proceedings. Town turned the game on its head on 77 minutes, when Mark Ellison unleashed a screamer from 30 yards, which flashed past Wibberley to cap off a great performance by the midfielder. Harworth looked stunned, and offered little in return to that goal. Credit must be given to Newark's defence, Gareth Dobb and Ben Barnard in particular, as the pair looked solid at the back. Harworth put pressure on Newark's goal towards the end of the match, but any half chances were snuffed out by the defence. Steve Carty's last ditch tackle to deny Burrows was the closest Harworth came to an equaliser. Southwell City 0 Radcliffe Olympic 1 Title chasing Radcliffe Olympic proved to be too strong and too experienced for City when they visited the Memorial Ground last Saturday. The visitors made their intentions clear from the off and forced the City defence onto the back foot. Strikers Carl Westcarr and Lee Potts were being fed constantly with balls up front and they were well supported by wide men Paul Archer and Bed Richardson. City's central defender Jack Hudson continued his good form and despite the early pressure together with Daniel Harding, George Paling and Kyle Crofts were able to contend with Radcliffe's advances. In fact it was City who had the best chance to open the scoring when Mark Nangle found himself in the clear and sent in an inviting cross which was begging for the slightest touch but the ball went agonisingly wide. City boss Nangle was forced to replace Turpin through injury for Tom McDonald in the centre of mid-field after only 18 minutes play, it was Radcliffe however who continues to control the mid-field and create most of the chances. The City defence finally cracked on 27 minutes when Anthony Newton received the ball wide on the right and his cross was met by Ben Richardson who netted from 5 yards. At the other end City had a good chance to level the scores when Tom McDonald's also went wide. Despite the fact that the Radcliffe scorer of the only goal in the first half was, in the opinion of everyone except the linesman, in a clear off-side position Radcliffe thoroughly deserved their half time lead. The second half was a more even contest which saw City creating more chances and the Radcliffe defence determined to protect their lead. On 27 minutes Newton had a good chance to put the game beyond City but his shot skimmed the City upright. In search of the equaliser Nangle replaced Daniel Severn for Danny Prance and Kyle Crofts for Nick Morgan and played with three up front but even with these tactics City rarely looked like opening the scoring. In the closing stages Ben Richardson came close to his second but his shot went over the bar. Kimberley Town 0 Blidworth Welfare 0 In a difficult match on an almost unplayable surface, it was the performances of both Goalkeepers which stood out the most, with both Blidworth's Jamie Davies and Kimberley Town's Mick Oxborow pulling off some fantastic saves to keep their respective teams in the match. The action started frantically with some heavy challenges and several fouls conceded early on from both sides. The first chance of the match came about in 10th minute, when a misplaced clearance from Blidworth's step-in captain, James Tagg, resulted in a crossing opportunity for Kimberley's Simon Passo, who delivered a low ball into the box, but Emanuel Brian to could not get his scuffed shot on target. Whilst playing

on such a bad surface, it was unsurprising that fortune for both teams came about with wing play. This was highlighted with Blidworth's first real opportunity of the match, when a high ball into the box from Lee Easom dropped kindly and set up a half volley chance for Shaun Roberts which was deflected out for a corner. Reville was the architect for all of his team's chances in the first half, and was managing to find gaps in the Blidworth defence with his accurate passing. With the half time break closing in, it was Kimberley Town who seemed the more likely of the two sides to break the deadlock, with several corners and lots of pressure being applied to Blidworth's back four. However, the composure of Matthew Roper enabled Blidworth to cope with the onslaught. In stoppage time of the first half, it was Kimberley with the last chance. A poor clearance from Stuart Grozier was collected by Kimberley's midfielder, Steve Kirkham, who played a fantastic through ball to Reville but his shot was dragged across goal. At the beginning of the second half, it was Kimberley who started the brighter of the two sides, with two early long range drives from Arron Russell. A late tackle from Roper then set up an opportunity for Brian to from a free kick, just outside the box. However, his curled shot around the wall was not struck with enough power and was easily collected down to his right by Davies. With 55 minutes gone, Blidworth Welfare's manager, Kevin Easom, made his first changes of the match, with Murray Campbell coming on for Hole and club captain, Liam Best replacing Grozier. 5 minutes after Blidworth's changes, it was Kimberley Town's turn to make a change, with manager Paul Rawdon replacing Joe Geeson with Dave Harby. This move seemed to encourage Blidworth to push on and there was a lot moreurgency in their play, with lots more movement in midfield and up front. However, just as it seemed that Kevin Easom's side were on top of the game, Reville somehow ended up with a one on one situation after a lapse in concentration from the Blidworth defence. The Kimberley Striker surged forward but a heavy touch enabled Davies to come out and collect the ball at the feet of the day's most impressive outfield player. Almost immediately after this opportunity, Reville was put through again one on one after his own nod forward, but aimed for the near post and disappointingly dragged his shot wide. This was very much the theme of the day, with both sides disappointing in the final third of the pitch, with many wasted crosses and misplaced passes. However, because of the much higher tempo to the match in the second half, opportunities were much more frequent. With 75 minutes gone, Kevin Easom made his final change of the match, with Alex Marsh, who had been dropped to the bench, replacing Senior in attack. Marsh made an immediate impact to the match and introduced pace and vigour to proceedings with his first few touches of the ball driving forward on the right wing. His run resulted in a great free kick opportunity from the edge of the box which was taken by Marsh, himself, but it was weakly struck and easily collected by Oxborow. Blidworth's pressure was beginning to mount in the latter stages of the match. Another free kick opportunity in a similar range was struck powerfully by Senior but was tipped onto the bar and over by the impressive Kimberley goalkeeper. From the resulting corner, it was Tagg who climbed the highest to head on target, but was headed off the line by Kimberley's Simon Passo. In stoppage time in the second half, it was Blidworth, who were still battling to gain three points, as Kimberley fought for their lives with some dogged defending.

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE COUNTY POOL - NOTTINGHAM encounter. Report by John Brinkworth BEGIN THE SEASON WELL OVERALL AGAINST CALVERTON & ARNOLD DISTRICT POOL LEAGUE DRAGONS AND EAGLES TO CONTEST CUP FINAL SHROPSHIRE Games played Thurs 29th Jan
Shropshire 'A' 23 Notts 'A' 21
A disappointing start to the 2009 campaign as Notts A failed to fire on the demanding tables at the Teflord away venue. With 4 new signings for 2009 in former England players Andy Wilson and Kev Seaman along with the returning experience of gary McLeod and Andy Bingham, Notts had hoped to get off to a flier but struggled to stay with the improved Shropshire team from the off. Notts found themselves needing the last 5 legs for a draw and responded with the first 4 only for James Hill to suffer his only loss of the day in the crucial final leg. On the plus side another former England star Clint I'Anson was firing again with 4 wins and commendable 3 out of 4 displays were the order of the day for Ashley Radford, Kev Seaman and James Hill. Captain Pat Kelley will be looking for a stronger performance from his squad in the next tough fixture at home to Leicestershire on Feb 22.
Shropshire 'B' 11 Notts 'B' 33 In stark contrast to the 'A' side, Notts B were on fire for most of this fixture. With 7 new signings coming through last week's trials there was a lot of focus on how captain Ron Sharpe would approach this fixture. Notts B started well enough with a 9-2 lead after the first set, but were pegged back a little in the second for a 15-7 lead. The pool stepped up several gears in the second half with Notts only losing 4 more legs out of the last 22. Andy Hind (mom), Jason Ward, Ryan Hewitt and new signing Martin Lovett all won 4 out of 4. John Brinkworth (3 out of 3) and Brian Robinson (2 out of 2), also had 100% returns as indeed did Darren Swinton, Greg Crowson and Steve Dove, who all won their individual frame. If Notts B keep up this kind of form they wont be far short of National finals qualification come December.
Shropshire Ladies 13 Notts Ladies 31 Notts Ladies have lost 2 very strong players this year after Tara Jackson and Kerry Griffiths moved away from the area but with Sarah Day and Chris Kirk joining the side they are looking like contenders again this year and this resounding win will do them no harm at all. Notts Ladies got off to a real flier only dropping one leg in the first set of 11. Just like the 'B' side though they started the 2nd set badly by losing the first 4 only to come back with 7 straight wins. They slipped again a little in the third but finished the match well with 8 from the last set. Lady of the match award went to Brenda Payne with 3 out of 4, though 100% performances were put in by Former England player Deb Burchell , Diane Nash and Janet Mayes.
West Midlands Juniors 'B' 18 Notts Juniors 26 For the first time since 2007 the youngsters of Nottingham came away from a match as victors. The side were depleted at the end of 2007 when a number of top players turned 18 and became ineligible for 2008. The team management also changed with Richard Fewkes taking control of the side and working tirelessly to recruit new Youth players. This is still a comparatively young side but the players are now beginning to develop and this was evident in the display at West Midlands. Adam Anderson was the player of the match for Notts in this fixture. If any other juniors are interested in playing for Notts, there is a parents and juniors event being run on 1 Feb at the Phenix in Eastwood. This will be run in conjunction with a County bye weekend when Notts A will take on Notts B at the same venue in their first ever friendly

BEESTON, CHILWELL & WEST NOTTS POOL LEAGUE - VICTORY CLUB ‘B’ TAKE A SLIDE AFTER DEFEAT TO QUEEN’S ‘B’ Victory Clubs B took a tumble this week leaving the Commercial to slot nicely into second after their win over Star. Its wide open at the moment with any of the following nine teams in with a chance at first or second with half the season still to play. This has just got to be one of the closest contested division A sides I have seen in a very long time, even the bookies would be hard pressed at this one. Robin Hoods and Poachers are sadly facing the relegation zone this time round. A bad match against a good side saw Birchover A lose heavily to the Jaguar on home slate which keeping them well and firmly in fourth slot, despite being second a fortnight ago. Jaguar celebrate their win by moving to joint point leaders with Cricketers A with eight legs the difference. Riverside, Nook and Pelican A of division C all took wins to leave their positions unchanged. Birchover B too started their comeback after losing the last two matches. They move up one over Boat & Horses but all might change next week as they face the Boat on home slate. Report by Paul G Lacey

lost by just 12 points to century man Neil Jones. With Stadium still leading by 4 points, things were looking good for Stadium who were receiving 70 points on the handicap. Unfortunately Steve Butler produced one of his worst performances of the season, going down by a massive 72 points to a very clinical Andy Spicer who made two good 20+ breaks. At 10pm, with just the pairs remaining, Stadium's lead was just 2 points. On recent form the Stadium pairing of Gormley and Ellis should have stood no chance against Jones and I'Anson, however the Stadium pair produced a fine tactical performance to open up a 30 point lead. Eventually, Stadium led by 22 points with just 22 on the table. Ellis attempted a safety shot on the brown and was distraught to see the white go in off in the middle bag. Spicer then potted brown and a beautiful blue from which he landed perfectly on the pink. The Stadium lads couldn't bear to look as Spicer stroked in the pink but the white ran too far leaving Spicer with a very difficult thin cut on the black into the top pocket. Spicer knew that it could easily rattle in the jaws to leave a sitter for Gormley but he held his nerve superbly and potted the black to win the match for Beeston by just 4 points. BCI Snooker Centre “A” beat Oakleigh Lodge Social Club by 76 points despite having to concede 200 points start. At home BCI made headway into the handicap by winning by 184 points. At Oakleigh things were tighter with Jon Mason getting the better of the dangerous Jason Turner and Wayne Martin winning a marathon frame against Rob Selby. Kwok Yip was the only casualty for BCI losing to Colin Tutin who potted some fantastic long balls and kept Yip off the table. Arnold Civil Defence “A” beat BCI Snooker Centre “B” by 57 points. Chris Winter made a very good 51 break in his singles frame. Sherwood Social Club were the only division 2 side to make it into the semi-finals as they beat City Hospital Leisure Centre by 55 points. KNOCKOUT PLATE The Peoples Hall beat Wollaton Royal British Legion by a massive 320 points, Cotgrave Welfare beat Phoenix Cue Sports by 22 points and Arnold Civil Defence “B” beat Lenton Liberal Club by just 1 point. MEN'S: Queens took a tumble against arch rivals Boat (Lenton) who beat Queens 5-4 putting the two in joint point second slot separated only by leg difference, however the difference is large and the boat would need to rely more on overtaking the Queens by points to be in with a chance this second half of the season. Chequers still remain the only unbeaten side in the league and retain top of division B despite a bye week. The Nook are close at heel but may well have to wait until the last match before gaining level points when they can tackle their rivals in a face off. Meantime its legs that matter to Nook as that will be what takes the title if they can beat them in that last game of the season.
NOTTINGHAM CENTRAL DARTS - STRELLEY IN ROMP OVER POETS! LADIES: Strelley finally shrug off their jinx and what a way to do it with a terrific 7-0 home victory over Poets. Hats off to Strelley this week, but will they keep it up? More next time but the damage done is deep but not irreparable as both the Pride of Erin and Clifton Bridge both suffered losses against comeback sides March Hare and Beacon,

well played you two but it still leaves Strelley with a two game catch up on the leaders. Meanwhile division B sees leaders Park Tavern and Nuthall in what could be a two horse race, but the season isn't done with yet and there's still a chance for others to catch up. MIXED: Cambridge seem unstoppable this season as they retain the championship slot with another victory. Can they see the season out in this incredible unbeaten form? They have had some close calls but it would indeed be an incredible achievement. even thus far, well done Cambridge. It seems a two horse race in division B as the Shed remain at the top with Querneby close at heel. However there are still four to go and Catchems aren't going to see out their first season sitting down. MEN'S: Both Queens and Beechdale had safe victories to secure their places at the top of division A but it seems like Top Valley are picking now to launch their comeback race to the title with a brilliant 7-2 win. Cambridge also continue their climb up the table after also celebrating a 7-2 victory, watch out at the top! Birchover suffered a bad setback in their title clash with Lion after losing to Madhouse which left them second only by leg difference. Horse and Jockey could still pull into that place still having a game in hand over the leaders. Report by Paul Lacey

Nottingham Panthers 3 Manchester Phoenix 2 A five on three powerplay goal saw the visitors take the first period with Murphy in man of the match form in goal for the visitors. GMB Panthers upped the gears in the second and with Kevin Bergin making a nuisance of himself every time he screened the crease he bagged the equaliser in the 25th minute. James Ferrara, a regular on the blueline in this one, got the go-ahead goal early in the third and Corey Neilson, leading by example throughout, blasted home for a two goal cushion on a powerplay with less than ten minutes to go. A late powerplay to the Phoenix saw them eventually pull keeper Murphy and go six skaters against four and the ploy worked but there was no time left for a dramatic late, late equaliser and Nottingham deserved the points. Johan Molin was back in the action, wearing a face-mask to protect his face injury and he picked up the man of the match award for the GMB Panthers from match sponsors Midland Filtration. Coach Corey Neilson was pleased with the effort and the result afterwards saying :"Manchester are a very good, well organised team and when their goalie is making good saves they're a hard team to break down but we stuck at it. Ed Hill was solid enough on his debut and he will get better and better as he gets used to the league and his new team mates." All the top teams had wins on Saturday with Sheffield beating Edinburgh (6-2), Coventry winning in Hull (2-6) and Belfast enjoying their second win in as many nights against visiting Newcastle (4-2).
nine minutes to go to record back-to-back wins against Manchester (2-4). After winning 3-2 on Saturday at home Nottingham were in good spirits as they travelled to Altrincham for Sunday night's game but after a goalless first period there was a major row with officials after the opening powerplay goal for the home side who then added a second before the end of the middle period. The penalty bench crew had sent Jade Galbraith and Alex Dunn onto the ice at the end of their penalties which had been called at the same time but Nottingham had been given two subsequent penalties at different times. This meant the manpower on the ice was wrong at the time the Phoenix scored through Dunn. The Panthers focussed their anger on to the job in hand and with the lines shuffled around got right back into the match with Jade Galbraith's goal at 51.58. Then Kevin Bergin finished off after great work by Johan Molin and Dan Tessier at 56.11 and he scored again off a defenceman's legs 17 seconds later with assists to Tess and Corey Neilson, and the player-coach added the empty-netter with two seconds left on the clock to wrap up a 24 victory. Corey Neilson's praised his team's character afterwards for sticking to the task until the bitter end and Kevin Bergin said the manner of the victory showed the GMB Panthers will not throw in the towel regardless of circumstances. The top of the table clash in Coventry saw Steelers win (12), Edinburgh beat Basingstoke (4-3) and Hull hit twio late ones to secure victory in Cardiff (1-2).
