For most Forest supporters Wednesday night was a new low. Striding into a 2-goal lead brought unbridled ecstasy to the City Ground, and with it scenes of chaos to rival those of the promotion in May. But the higher you climb, the harder you will fall. By the end of 90 minutes Forest were left stunned; a heavy-legged, battle-worn Reds side had melted beneath a ruthless Derby resurgence. Supporters were an ugly collage of violently angry and simply inconsolable. The mood remained flat up to and beyond kick-off on Saturday, and spirits soured further when Nathan Tyson joined the injury list after only ten minutes. It is probably easier to get a bed with the NHS than it is to find space in the teeming Forest treatment room. Forest rode their luck in the first half; a confident QPR side pushed their way in behind Forest's new-look defence and the ball was twice cleared from the line in a burst of pressure. But Forest's youthful line-up has been praised consistently by Billy Davies, and the dogged spirit he has spoken so highly of proved vital. A spell of perseverance at the end of the first half culminated in Luke Chambers being toppled on his way into the penalty area. Lewis McGugan buried the resulting penalty past Lee Camp in the QPR goal. The euphoria was short lived. Seconds before half-time QPR
punished Forest's slack defending and netted an equaliser. Davies seethed on the touchline, and after the half-time break he was raging again as QPR sauntered into a 2-1 lead. A Forest side lacking any notable outlet looked down and out - Garner the only senior striker was playing with a shoulder injury and the youthful wing backs, despite their efforts, had little effect going forward. But Forest were handed a lifeline, ironically, by Lee Camp. Camp became a favourite during his loan spell at the club, largely for his penalty saves and his mobility in dealing with crosses. Both skills failed him on his return, to Forest's great advantage. Chris Cohen rose at the back post, beating Camp to the ball, to bring Forest a crucial equaliser on 67 minutes. The goal brought colour to the cheeks of Forest supporters who steadily regained their nobility throughout the game. Wounded and flinching to begin with, supporters were eventually buoyed sufficiently to deliver the usual anthology of anti-Derby ballads. A draw is not a bad result in the circumstances, but fans will be hoping that Davies has more to choose from next week against high-flying Birmingham City. Ratings: Smith – 6 – no real problems, or shining moments. Moloney – 6 – he found himself floundering at times, despite making every effort to adapt to a difficult role. Chambers – 6 – he is never the strongest of Forest's ailing defence, but he kept his head above water in the most part this afternoon. Wilson – 6 – a steady performance, soured to some extent by one or two clumsy incidents. Morgan – 6.5 – continues to be solid and incredibly dedicated. Heath – 6.5 – assured, confident and every inch as worthy of a place as his colleagues today. Thornhill – 7 – confident and efficient; his range of passing improves with every game he plays. McGugan – 7 – much improved on recent weeks. A confidently taken penalty, several mazy runs that opened up play when outlets seemed otherwise scarce. Cohen – 7 – another goal, and a very important one at that. Garner – 6 – struggled with the early knock. Tyson – poor lad! Newbold – 6 – plenty of effort, but he was a little bit lost at times. Remembering 'Chic' Thomson and '59 FA Cup Me Owd Duck, LTLF's regular history writer, reflects on the life on Charlie 'Chic' Thomson, Forest's goalkeeper in the 1959 FA Cup final, who died last month aged 78.Half a century ago, Billy Walker was Forest manager and in 1957 he bought the keeper that had been the backbone of Chelsea's 1955 League-winning team. Walker had been manager at Forest since 1939 and had weaned the team on the 'Walker Way' – passing to feet – tactics Forest fans still expect today. Charlie Thomson was born in Perth in March 1930. He was a five foot eleven Scotsman. The story goes that he had been playing football in the park as a teenager when a friend had told him Clyde needed him to go in goal against Rangers that afternoon. Chic took the bus to the ground. Chelsea paid £5,000 for him in 1952. This was a time when football was a game played for working class fans by working class players. There was mostly standing only at the grounds; in 1957 Forest opened the new East Stand, containing 2,500 numbered seats. The Forest team were reported to play in red shirts and white knickers. The ball was real leather and if it hit you in the face, it would really hurt and could knock you out. There was a wage cap on players. The top earners in the league were allowed to take home twenty pounds a week. In reality, most players earned far less than that. Before Clyde called him up, Chic made a living out of repairing dry cleaning machines. When interviewed after the Cup final, he expected to return to that after his playing
Mansfield Town 1 York City 0 Attendance: 2,576 Mansfield Town survived over half-an-hour with ten men to record a battling victory over York City. Rob Duffy's first half penalty was enough to earn all three points and the Stags showed great resilience and fighting qualities after Scott Garner was sent off on 56 minutes. Since Holdsworth took charge last month Mansfield have only dropped two points from a maximum fifteen and rise to twelfth in the league. Town made three changes from the team that beat Eastbourne Borough last Saturday. Scott Gardner replaced the suspended Gary Silk, Paul Mayo came in for JameaKay and Aaron O'Connor replaced Tomi Ameobi in attack. Curtis Woodhouse made his home debut in the heart of midfield. York made two changes from last weekend's FA Trophy game against Kidderminster. Christian Smith and Simon Brown came in for Ben Purkiss and Andy McWilliams. It
career. He was our goalkeeper on the day Forest played the Manchester United team in their first league game after the Munich Air Crash in which many of the Busby Babes died. Chic performed admirably to hold a new United side to a 1-1 draw, watched by 66,000 passionate fans. This is the largest crowd that has ever watched Forest in a league game. Our path to the 1959 final began with a third round draw against Non-league Tooting and Mitcham that required a replay to get us through. 43,000 fans turned up for the replay at the City Ground. Grimsby were beaten in the next round and then we met Birmingham City. It took three matches for us to finally beat them 5-0 at neutral Filbert Street, Leicester. Bolton were dispatched in the quarter finals and then our semi-final opponents were Aston Villa, winners of the 1957 and 1958 finals. The game took place at Hillsborough, in front of 65,000 fans. A sixty-fifth minute goal from John Quigley ensured a Wembley visit for the Forest fans, who believed at this point that the hardest work had already been done. And so on May 2, 1959, manager Billy Walker and captain Jack Burkitt led Forest out onto the Wembley turf in front of a hundred thousand fans for the final against Luton Town. Our team was the same team that had played in all nine FA Cup games that season: Chic Thomson, Billy Ware, Joe McDonald, Jeff Whitefoot, Bobby McKinlay, Jack Burkitt, Roy Dwight, Johnny Quigley, Tommy Wilson, Billy Gray and Stewart Imlach. Forest went 2-0 up with goals from
was a very quiet opening twenty minutes with both sides adapting to the conditions but livened up as the half drew to a close. The first chance didn't arrive until 22 minutes. Mayo's free-kick just inside the visitors half was nodded back to Moses on the edge of the area who volleyed over the bar. Shortly after Blackwood and O'Connor combined to set Mayo down the left hand side but his cross from inside the penalty area was cleared to safety. The visitors created their best chance of the half on 33 minutes. A deep cross from the right hand side from Simon Rusk was headed into the path of Richard Brodie but York's top scorer directed his header straight at Marriot from seven yards out. On 38 minutes Christian Smith laid the ball into the path of Mackin who unleashed a fierce 30 yard drive which bobbled along the snowy surface. Marriot got down well to save. Two minutes later and Michael Blackwood's jinking run earned the Stags a penalty. The tricky winger beat two men and was taken out by Ingam in the visitor's goal. Referee Geoff Eltringham had no hesitation in pointing the spot much to the disbelief of the York player's disbelief. Rob Duffy coolly slotted home the penalty sending Ingham the wrong way but was booked for celebrating in the snow infront of the disgruntled visiting supporters. Louis Briscoe replaced Michael Blackwood a minute after the break. The left-midfielder picked up a knock midway through
Dwight and Wilson before Dwight was carried off with a broken leg and Forest were reduced to ten men. Substitutes were not allowed in competitive games until 1965. The ten men held out, Chic Thomson conceding just the one goal, and Jack Burkitt lifted the cup for us. Two hundred thousand fans lined the route from the Midland Railway station to the Old Market Square to catch a glimpse of the team with the cup. Forest travelled to away matches on the train in second class compartments back then. Frank Forman, a member of our 1898 FA Cup winning team had watched the game on the television. Thomson and the team passed into legend. The following season Walker sold seven of the cup winning team; his reign at Forest ended in 1961 after twenty one years, although something of his legacy has always remained at the City Ground. Thomson left Forest the following season for non-league side Valley Sports. Chic stayed in Nottingham until his death on January 6. He was a visitor to the City Ground on many occasions, being paraded on the pitch on anniversaries of the last time we won the cup. Only two players from the team are still surviving.
Read more from Me Owd Duck at www.ltlf.co.uk the first-half following a heavy challenge from Simon Rusk. On 56 minutes Scott Garner was sent-off for his second bookable offence. The Blue Square Premier Player of the Month was yellow carded in the first-half for kicking the ball away and was given his marching orders for deliberate handball. From the resultant free-kick the ball fell to Brodie eight yards out but his half-volley was well saved by Marriot. On 59 minutes Mackenzie came on for O'Connor and six minutes later the Stags made their third and final substitution with Ameobi replacing the injured Scott Gardner. Three minutes later York came within a whisker of equalising. Christian Smith's free-kick on the edge of the penalty area narrowly missed the target with Marriot beaten. The visitors piled forward in search of an equaliser but the Stags showed great resilience. With nine minutes remaining, a cross from the right hand side led to a goal mouth scramble in the Stags penalty area, with Marriot making a string of blocks before the ball was cleared from safety. A minute from time a cross from the right hand side found Brodie unmarked four yards out but Marriot pulled off a fantastic save from point blank range. There were a few groans from the home faithful as the fourth official signaled five minutes of stoppage time, but 'the yellows' rode it out to earn a crucial three points.

SNOW STOPS PLAY FOR ALL AMATEUR GAMES! Nottinghamshire Inter League Charity Competition 2009 - In aid of Breast Cancer Care
Wednesday 18th February Four local football leagues will lock Notts Amateur Alliance v East Midlands horns once more this Year in aid of Veterans At Calverton MW FC Breast Cancer Care in the third
year of the Notts Inter League Charity Tournament. Last season's winners the Notts Amateur Alliance will do battle with the Precision Training Notts Senior League, East Midlands Veterans League and Midland Amateur Alliance. Initially, the leagues will meet each other once during February and March in a league format, with the top two sides meeting at Hucknall Town in May in the final. Last season's competition raised £861 for local children's charity Wish Upon A Star, which was over £200 more than the previous season's effort which still raised a creditable sum for East Midlands Air Ambulance. 'It's great to be able to have fun doing something we all enjoy' said NAA spokesman Gary Hoe. 'We have chosen Breast Cancer Care as they are another extremely good cause helping sufferers across the country. Our aim, even in these tough times, is to make four figures as the competition gathers momentum. A website has been set up to take donations and we ask people to give as much as they can to support this superb cause'. Each league will make a donation into a pot to cover costs of staging the tournament to maximise revenue for the charity. 'Hucknall have been superb in allowing us to use their facilities again' commented NSL Vice Chairman Frank Hunt. 'It was an excellent night there last year and we hope for more of the same. NSL - SEASON SUMMARY Yet again the weather beat the NSL program this weekend, with every fixture across all three divisions being postponed. Unfortunately this might cause problems for some NSL teams, in the Senior Division Keyworth, Awsworth, Gedling, Cotgrave and Basford all have several games in hand, which could cause a fixture pile-up having only played 18 games. This could be seen as an advantage however for Basford, who sit in 4th place, nine points off the leaders Wollaton, but with three games in hand. Pelican are in a similar position, six points off the top but with two games in hand, and those two
join Boots and Cavaliers in the chasing pack. It is Wollaton who have maintained top-spot however, a position they have held for the whole of the season. However, their early season dominance has waned and they have been inconsistent of late, relying on their talented strike-force of Turner and Sharpe to get them out of trouble. The pair have netted 32 times between them, contributing heavily to the divisions most prolific side. Magdala also have an impressive points tally, but have played 23 games, at least 2 games more than anyone around them. Meanwhile, Gedling are at the bottom of the table, but they also have plenty of games in hand, and have started to pick up in recent weeks, after a dreadful spell of nine consecutive defeats. With only six points separating the bottom seven teams it is very tight, but none of the sides have been able to put together a good enough run to put distance between themselves and the relegation places. Awsworth make up the bottom two, who have also played several games less, and are on the back of a great win against leaders Wollaton, a win which they hope will start help them to climb up the league. Clifton, Keyworth and Ruddington all put good runs together earlier in the campaign but have since stuttered and have found themselves pegged back right into the thick of it at the bottom. In Division One Bulwell still lead the way, as they have done for much of the season, but they will be worried by Gedling res and in particular Sandhurst, who have been more consistent, losing only once all season. Wollaton and Pelican res are also building the pressure on the top two, although are still 10 points adrift of leaders Bulwell. Basford may prove the team to watch out for; they find themselves 16 points behind Bulwell but significantly have seven games in hand, having only played 12 games, mostly due to the bad weather. Bilborough Town are still stranded at the bottom, without a point all season, whilst Boots res, Clifton res, Kimberley res and Underwood Villa are battling hard to avoid joining them. Calverton Academy are still top in Division Two, suffering their only defeat in the season in their last outing. Awsworth res have been impressive however and provide Calverton with their stiffest competition. It was in fact Awsworth who inflicted Calverton’s only defeat, a 3-2 away win which has seen them cut the gap to just two points at the top. Linby and Magdala sit in 3rd and 4th respectively just six points off the

Central Midlands League Our two East Riding clubs, Westella & Willerby and Hutton Cranswick United, both of the Black Dragon Premier Division, ensured the league did not get a complete whitewash. The outcome was very satisfying as regards mid table Hutton Cranswick United where concerned, they accounted for Thoresby Colliery Welfare, winning 2-0. But the day rebounded on league leaders, Westella and Willerby, visitors Phoenix Sports and Social pulling of a shock 3-2 victory. Westella and Willerby riding high at the top of the Premier Division and looking to extend their lead to eleven points, they not only lost for the first time at home this season, but the visitors completed a noteworthy double and are the only team to defeat the East Riding club, having won at Phoenix in October 1-0. The game began badly for the home team, with their first attack of the game Phoenix went in front, with a goal converted by David Parry. In an even encounter, Andrew Coverdale equalised for Westella in the 40th minute but with the home team seemingly going in level at half time disaster struck, Phoenix's Jonathan Jenkins giving the visitors the lead right on half time. The second half continued in the same vein, with chances going begging at both ends, until the 80th minute, when the home team's defence was again caught out and Ryan Moorcroft sent the visitors fans into ecstasy, when he coolly slotted home to make it 3-1. The league leaders hit back, Matthew Fyvie pulled a goal back with five minutes remaining but Phoenix held on to take three well deserved points. Westella remain the leaders, with an eight point advantage over second placed Parramore Sports, who have two games in hand. Third placed Louth Town are eleven points adrift of Westella, but now have a staggering six games in hand of the East Riding club. Hutton Cranswick United must be congratulated on getting their pitch fit, for the visit of Thoresby Colliery Welfare and they had the satisfaction of gaining the points, winning 2-0 with both the goals coming in the first half. The home team certainly started the better of the two teams and it was not surprising, when Andy Martin put them in front in the 9th minute. New signing Danny Kettle put a cross into a crowded goal mouth and in the ensuring melee; Martin was on hand to stab the ball home. The pitch which was well sanded, began to cut up and this restricted both teams, however, it did not stop the home team increasing their score in the 39th minute, it was another new signing Liam Gildea who scored the goal and what a cool finish it was, moving onto a through ball, he rounded the visiting goalkeeper, before sliding the ball home. In the second half Thoresby had a wonderful chance to reduce the lead, being awarded a penalty in the 66th minute, but Kevin Nussey blasted the spot kick over the bar and any chance of Thoresby taking anything from the game disappeared. In the end the home team ran out deserved winners. Report by Frank Harwood

'Mighty Scots' currently boast an unblemished record in the first three competitions and sit proudly in the quarter finals of the FA Carlsberg National Sunday Cup having overcome the holders in the last phase. Close rivals; Clifton Villa and newly promoted Trentside had the temerity to lead in recent games with only minutes remaining. However, Greys displayed why they never know when they are beaten, by scoring late goals to win both encounters. Surprise packages in the Premier Division are Redhill and Trentside, who currently occupy second and third spots in the table having both won promotion last term. Trentside have the Sections leading goalscorer in Nathan Francis, who has notched sixteen already this season, including four hat-tricks, one of which was in the close encounter with the league leaders. The other two divisions in the section have proved more competitive, with the lead constantly changing. Rolls Royce Leisure were the early front runners and looked unbeatable after a 100% record from their first five outings. However, fellow title pretenders; Trowsers put paid to that run and another defeat followed in the next game. During this period, long term manager/secretary Richard Silverwood parted company with the club for personal reasons but the side appear to have put their affairs back in order and three consecutive victories have put their championship challenge back on track. Chesterfield Arms are the current leaders but have played four more games than Rolls and three more than Trowsers. This is a division where the outcome will 'go to the wire'. Division Two is experiencing similar changes of leadership, initial vanguards; Bulwell Rangers falling back into the pack, as new sides to the section Cotgrave PFC and Sims Metal applied the pressure. After a poor start to the season, Vernon Villa Sunday have compiled a run of five successive victories to transform themselves from relegation certainties to promotion challengers. Report by John Wheat
EMPAL League
With Nottinghamshire auditioning for the remake of Ice Station Zebra the entire fixture list was wiped out like an Ebola virus spreading across the Trent Valley. Match reports have been replaced with some suspicious sightings across the playings fields of Nottinghamshire! Grazing Caribou were spotted at Grove Farm nibbling on the University pitches few patches of greenery. Walkers at Gresham reported strange “Big Foot” type prints in the snow near the old Chateau building. Alford Road playing fields resembled Erich Von Daniken like apparitions as crumbling giant Snowmen appeared in the centre circles – landing signals for aliens perhaps? Nottingham Panther players were supposedly seen training on the frozen wastes more commonly known as Colwick Racecourse to toughen themselves for the Steelers derby! County Cup Round Up - The next round of matches are due to be played next week on the 15th of February with Empal clubs taking seven of the twelve places in the Notts Junior and Minor Cups. So just what does it take to step up from the comfort zone of regular Sunday matches against familiar opponents at local grounds to the unknown horizons of Ollerton and Collingham? Certainly Empal clubs have a tremendous record over the seasons and one criteria shines like a lighthouse beacon namely the drive of particular individuals within the competing clubs. If you go back to the early 90's Notts Sunday Football League when Wilford Sports reigned supreme in the Empal With a total 'whiteout' of all fixtures in the Notts Sunday operating out of the now defunct Wilford Sports Complex Football League it gives appropriate time to reflect upon at Gresham. Russell Hampton the ex Army PTI drove the a season that has seen the inclement weather ravage team onto repeated successes with his near obsessive the playing programme over the past few weeks. The determination to conquer all around the complex. Premier Section of the League once again demonstrated it's revered position in local Sunday football by having nine representatives in last sixteen, six of the last eight and three of the last four of the Notts FA Sunday Senior Trophy. Once again, Scots Grey set the standards that all other clubs aspire to throughout the county. Having achieved the double of Premier Division Championship and Section KO Cup for the past four years, along with winning the Notts FA Sunday Senior Trophy three times over the same period and current holders of the now defunct Midland Sunday Cup. Following on from this Sports era Nottingham Alumni took on the mantle with their legions of University and Ex County players from all around the country. Simon Winfield was the driving force both on and off the park generating sponsorship and a quality squad led by the goal scoring exploits of Stockport Schoolboys star Jez Griffith and the left wing trickery of Steve Fessey. The legendary Eric Bandoo took no prisoners at the back with his quality reading of the game. West End won in 2005/6 assisted by the quality of their local Saturday “stars” ie the Mabons, Breaches and Shawes from their Eastwood/Gedling/Carlton type clubs. In the Minor Cup Rushcliffe SHR (another of your correspondents former clubs) were led by the quality of Guy Elba-Porter on the pitch and the organisation of Paul Greevy off the pitch and in goal to be technical. Similar stories could be told of recent winners Highfield Park Ranger in 2005/6 and Punjab Colts in 2007/8. Picture taken after one too many Gin & Tonics Sunday Combination League Darren Batchford (Pictured above - on right) of Bestwood MW receiving his long service award from the President of the Nott's FA and Combination league Chairman Mr Ray Valentine. Darren joined the league over 20 years ago as a player and since1996 has been involved in the management and secretarial side of things. Starting out at a flagging Wilford Villa, Darren rescued the club from almost extinction by assuming all the administration roles himself. The club has had various names since he took over before finally settling for what is now Bestwood MW. Since his inception at the helm Darren has led the club in its various forms to five Division 1 and division 2 runners up spots but unfortunately, both the Senior and Junior cups have proved elusive for Darren. Because, On no less than five separate occasions, Bestwood MW and Bestwood MW Reserves whom he set up in 2005 and runs along side the first team have failed to make the finals when falling at the last hurdle. This season he hopes to buck that trend by beating Greyfriars in his sixth semi final as manager in the hope of playing Man in Space or Beechdale Villa for the right to lift the Combination senior Trophy. To complete his all round Sunday morning ability Darren qualified as a referee when he successfully completed the FA's Refereeing course several years ago. With the Premier Division being as open as it has been for a few years the cancellation of Sunday's matches came as a big blow to all that are following the goings on in the top half of the table. This season is proving very tight with some
strong sides including the top three who all share 30 points apiece and look set to go down to the wire for the title with at least a further three clubs in serious contention for honours. Greyfriars Celtic in their maiden year in the top flight have found their feet and were set to take on title rivals and third placed Calverton MW who themselves have had a renaissance season after struggling at the wrong end of the table for the past two seasons and boast a 100% record, but alas the snow intervened to thwart us from a good game and a chance for one of them to consolidate a place in the top two. Gedling United find themselves at the top after ten straight victories and were looking to take advantage of any slip ups that Greyfriars and Calverton would dish up to open up a gap at the top, but they may not have had things all their own way at AC Broxtowe who themselves are in a false position having played only 6 league games and could be considered amongst the contenders. Unlike Greyfriars Celtic, Gremio and Sporting Wheelbarrow have found promotion to a very strong premier division tough going and the true spirit of Sunday football comes shining through as both clubs continue to strive to stay in touch with the clubs just above them by continuing to turn out week after week despite amalgamating only 5 points between them. As in the Premier, the division one mix for promotion and indeed the title is anyone's guess with at least 7 clubs jockeying for position. AFC Bridgford promoted from div 2 last season are setting the pace at the top but with CNC sitting two places behind with two games in hand
Common Lane, Hucknall they cannot afford any more slip ups if they are to remain there. A1 Glazing, Beechdale Villa, Volo, Bedstead and New Venture also fancy their chances for glory come reckoning day. Whilst at the other end, any club not vying for honours must have one eye over their shoulder on the relegation trap door, as any one of 6 clubs could get sucked into a relegation battle save to say Springfield United look doomed after their maiden season in div one has been a struggle thus far and would need promotion form in the second half of their campaign to pull clear. Another massive game to befall the weather in which all division 2 eyes were cast was Blacks Head versus Medz Reds in a top of the table clash between two unbeaten sides, of which one the title will surely go to, and it could be their head to heads that separates them as both clubs are scoring goals for fun and at this stage It appears only Newcastle Arms can break their 1-2 stranglehold on the honours front. Other than N.C.H, who are cut adrift at the foot of the table all the other sides seem fairly even and are more than capable of beating each other on their day! Along with Gedling United and Calverton MW, Bestwood Re-United are the only other side to boast a 100% record but despite this they only remain 3 points clear at the top of division three so can not rest on their laurels as a rejuvenated The close are one of several clubs ready to pounce for the title including M.I.S United who have between 3 and 7 games in hand over the three clubs above them. Whilst at the other end of the table a recent run of good results as seen Bingham Town Reserves pull themselves out of the wooden spoon position to the edge of mid table security and in this form could inflict some serious damage on the title contenders if they take them lightly. AFFAIRS! Following on from last weeks edition - more affairs! The 4th Affair A woman was in bed with her lover when she heard her husband opening the front door. 'Hurry,' she said, 'stand in the corner.' She rubbed baby oil all over him, then dusted him with talcum powder. 'Don't move until I tell you,' she said, 'pretend you're a statue.' 'What's this?' the husband inquired as he entered the room. 'Oh it's a statue,' she replied, 'the Smiths bought one and I liked it so I got one for us, too.' No more was said, not even when they went to bed. Around 2 AM the husband got up, went to the kitchen and returned with a sandwich and a beer. 'Here,' he said to the statue, have this. I stood like that for two days at the Smiths and nobody offered me a damned thing.' The 5th Affair A man walked into a cafe, went to the bar and ordered a beer.
'Certainly, Sir, that'll be one cent.' 'One Cent?' the man exclaimed. He glanced at the menu and asked: 'How much for a nice juicy steak and a bottle of wine?' 'A nickel,' the barman replied. 'A nickel?' exclaimed the man. 'Where's the guy who owns this place?' The bartender replied: 'Upstairs, with my wife.' The man asked: 'What's he doing upstairs with your wife?' The bartender replied: 'The same thing I'm doing to his business down here.' The 6th Affair Jake was dying. His wife sat at the bedside. He looked up and said weakly: 'I have something I must confess.' 'There's no need to, 'his wife replied. 'No,' he insisted, 'I want to die in peace. I slept with your sister, your best friend, her best friend, and your mother!' 'I know,' she replied, 'now just rest and let the poison work. Email your jokes to info@ballsmania.net

NOTTS OPEN PREMIER POOL - PONDA RILEY’S STUN three players out were obviously who they purported to be, the appearance of the fourth, Debbie Burchell had PARK TAVERN A! clearly stunned the crowd. Quiet murmurings, quickly turned louder as the paying public began voicing their concerns, “What's going on? This is supposed to be the LADIES singles,” shouted one, “I thought Debbie was supposed to be playing,” voiced another and finally the problem became apparent for the blindest of supporters as even the referee got involved with the obvious question, “What the heck is Andy Bingham doing in the Ladies Singles?” A short delay ensued as Debbie indignantly assured the Competition Secretary that she was indeed herself, but after checking her birth certificate, driving licence and passport, absolute proof still couldn't be guaranteed and after an offer by Rob “OJ” Taylor to perform a rather Premier 1 Park Tavern A have all but conceded the title as they had a intimate investigation, was dismissed by Debbie as shock defeat to Ponda Rileys at home. The final began with Ian Owen gunning for his fourth title and Ashley Radford aiming to be the second youngest winner ever, after James Hill, who won first won it in 1985 at the age of six, according to his brother. It was Ashley though, who raced into a 2-0 lead without some assured pool that belied his seventeen years. It was then Ian's turn to hit the accelerator and a couple of super-charged clearances saw the race neck and neck again. At this point Ashley took the driving seat once more and put the brakes on Ian's comeback and after taking the next two frames in succession he was crowned Formula 1 . . . sorry, Calverton & Arnold Singles Champion at 17 years old. The penultimate competition was the Pairs, which saw father and son duo, Adam and Trev Anderson beating a still out of sorts Martin Lovett and his not much better partner, Ipod Hewitt. The other match proved to be a walk in the park for Chris's Whittaker and Winter as they whitewashed Greg Crowson and his partner Corey Blackshaw, who did take some consolation by surprisingly winning the award for “Best Turned Out In The Paddock” having appeared to have arrived at the Calverton venue straight from a family wedding. The final itself was another high quality standard but the Balfour Club pairing of Whittaker and Winter proved too strong for their Railway Volunteers counterparts, the Andersons with a flattering 3-0 scoreline. Adam though, proved the future's bright, the future's orange . . . well kind of peachy coloured anyway, as he excelled in reaching his first major final having just turned seventeen. The last event of the day, the 3 Man competition proved to be something of a damp squib as the Empire B team consisting of Malcolm Grocock, Nidge Orton and ex cue-chucker and now ball-chucker, Loz Sanderson easily saw off the by-now rather inebriated challenges of the Railway Volunteer team of Tosh Ledgard and Trevs Anderson and Chambers, with Tosh at one point proving just how much he had celebrated his first major title all day by attempting to play a shot on the wrong table. The packed throngs at the Arena had been served up a positive pool treat all day long and made their way home from the snow covered streets of Calverton contentedly asking “Can any other League really compete with how the Calverton & Arnold guys do it?” Indeed. as none of his team-mates arrived, Oakleigh Lodge won the match 5-0. This moves Oakleigh Lodge into second place. Ruddington Conservative Club beat Nottingham Forest Sportsman Social Club 3-2. All of the other matches were postponed at the last minute due to the heavy snowfalls, however Sherwood Social Club 'B' conceded their match to BCI 'C'. BCI 'C' get 4 points, as per rules for a claimed game, and Sherwood 'B' lose 5 points. Report by Robert Wright (NNIA League Secretary)
NAZARETH HOUSE SNOOKER LEAGUE - BEESTON DEFEAT STADIUM LEISURE IN NAIL BITER! DIVISION 1 Pegasus moved above BCI 'A' into third place and just one point behind The Peoples Hall with a comfortable 6-2 victory against struggling Cotgrave Welfare. Whilst the destination of this years league championship looks a formality, the battle for the runners-up spot looks likely to go down to the wire with very little to separate the contesting teams. Most of the damage was inflicted at Pegasus where the home leg chalked up their 5th clean sheet of the season. Chris Brooks set the tone with a whopping 102 -11 points win against Cotgrave's Ted Cope. Jamie Mathers was another comfortable winner against Chris King, but the most celebrated win of the night was Steve Booth's first victory since late November. Booth was made to work for it though, as he came from behind to beat Cotgrave's Phil Foster before Brooks & Mathers made sure of the 4-0 score line in the doubles frame. At Cotgrave only a late rally from the home team ensured there would be no away leg rout for the Pegasus team. Chris Piech had given Pegasus the best possible start when he outscored Harry Briody by 50 odd points, to be fair Briody had some rotten luck as he went in-off on several occasions. Pegasus's Mike Langdon marked his 100th frame for the team with victory over Anthony McMahon by sinking green, brown and blue to win a closely contested frame. John Cyrek who is enjoying a good season pulled one back for Cotgrave with victory over Eric Towle before Cotgrave's pairing of Briody & Cyrek levelled the leg against Pegasus's Piech & Langdon in the final frame of the evening.
DIVISION 1 City Hospital Leisure Centre went top of the division despite a 2-3 loss at home to Sherwood Social Club 'A'. This was a brilliant return to form for Sherwood after their 0-5 defeat at the hands of Carlton Liberal Club last week. BCI 'A' remain in second place even though they were without a match this week. Top Spot stay joint third after their match at Sherwood Social Club 'D' was postponed. BCI 'E' moved into fifth spot after a comprehensive 4-1 win at Masters Ssnooker Club. Wong Yip won a very close first frame beating Nigel Bradford 54-48. Kwok Yip played well against a lacklustre James Robinson, winning 86-26. Paul Bell pulled a frame back for Masters with a very good 82-47 win over Sam Haugh. Jon Mason secured the last frame for BCI 'E' with a good 76-30 win over young Eric Towle. Masters remain rooted to the foot of the table. DIVISION 2 BCI 'B' were due to play Oakleigh Lodge, however only Neil Elliott turned up. BCI effectively gave up their title ambitions with a 3-5 loss to Beeston. At BCI Jason Bettridge suffered a rare loss to Shane Kidd, Neil Elliott came from behind to win his frame against Chris Hodgkinson and Steve Coleman lost out to Tom Walters. Bettridge and Coleman gained some consolation with a demolition job in the pairs frame against Walters and Kidd. At Beeston Andy Spicer got the better of Wayne Martin, Jon Mason just lost out to Clint I'Anson, Kwok Yip defeated centurian Neil Jones with some fine matchplay and the partnership of Jones & I'Anson pipped Martin & Mason on the black following 2 good 30+ breaks from I'Anson and Mason respectively. Stadium Leisure dented the title hopes of The Peoples Hall after holding them to a 4-4 draw. At Peoples Hall, Steve Butler was delighted to pinch a low scoring frame against the rarely defeated John Marshall. Matt Ellis came up against a player in fine form, Nasir Hussain, who made breaks of 18, 25 and 39 to secure a 90-35 win. Zeb Ahmed defeated Ross Wilkin and in the pairs frame Hussain and Ahmed just edged a nervy frame against Ellis and Butler 62-45. At Stadium, Barry Stark outclassed Nav Hussain 74-14, Danny Di Folco went down 34-74 to Zed Zubair and Bob Walker beat Yas Abbas 58-20. Darts Tables BEESTON, CHILWELL & DIST. DARTS - QUEENS LOSE TO BOAT (LENTON) Last chance for late entries into the Central All day team event Darts KO competition to be held at the Hillside on February 22nd. The event is open to all registered players from both the Central and Beeston leagues and is a team format with teams of five competing for the John Brogan Trophy in the Men's/mixed and the Mary Miller trophy in the Ladies. Teams can be entered as 6 players with any five of the six playing in each match. Entry fee is £12.50 per team and there are considerable prize monies to be won also. To enter please contact Paul G Lacey on text/mob: 0773 073 1494 or by email: nottinghamdarts@sky.com or details on website at www.nottinghambeestondarts-pool.co.cuk All entries to be in writing (text or e-mail) no later than Wednesday 18th February. LADIES: In perhaps one of the most surprising setbacks as we approach the last few matches of the season both Birchover and the Boat lose their matches throwing a whole new prospect on the race for the title and proving that all is never lost in this game. With the Chequers taking a 7-0 victory in a walkover due to the Inham Nook failing to produce a full squad and forfeiting the match and the legs and points. Likewise the Greyhound yet again failed to produce a squad to fulfil a match and they too forfeited to the Queens 7-0. With five matches left to the end of the season the league is wide open with even filth placed Chequers now in contention, so, watch your backs closely Birchover and Boat & Horses, there are teams creeping up fast and you've still got them to play too. MEN'S: No league matches in the Men's this week due to the first round of singles taking place. In what was, at some venues, a very disappointing turnout leaving some venues depleted of competition there was still some good darts and some achievements from surprising sources as the night

progressed. There were some maximums scored but probably one to be noted was Tony Cox of the Queens who hit another two maximums this season taking his tally to a very impressive seven so far. Some may think that's not a lot but bear in mind the majority of season is one game per player per match NOT the possible seventeen legs per match you see on telly. This makes Tony's tally more than on even with the stars and professionals in fact, the average is slightly better. Keep it up Tony, a maximum ten or more this season? Through to the finals night is: James Morris (Festival); Richard Bloomfield (Boat & Horses A); Russ Chamberlain (Boat & Horses A); Dale Gadsby (Queens); Paul Longson (Wollaton SC); Mark Limb (Boat); Darren Porter (Charlton). There is a dispute on the match at the Wollaton SC venue due to a misinterpretation of the rules and to be fair to the contestants a re-match is to be called between two of the contenders on the finals night in order to settle this and place the eighth finalist. All in all a good night with some good match play, I just wish there could have been a better turnout.
NOTTINGHAM CENTRAL DARTS - PRIDE OF ERIN STANDING FIRM! LADIES: Pride of Erin kick started their defence at the top with a nice 5-2 win over Southchurch social but hot on their tail is that other formidable Clifton side, the gals from ponderosa. Things are really heating up as we launch into the last part of the season. Some matches are still awaiting a decision from the committee as no less than five cancellations caused havoc amongst this week's matches. All five of these games have an impact on the top end of both divisions and I will feed you more info as I get it from the horses' mouth. Its very difficult to say at this stage how things will turn out as the league drops into turmoil with cancelations leaving the top positions in a quandary as to what happens next?

MIXED: Only one league game took place this week which was a re-arranged game White Lion v Vernon Hotel in which White Lion came away the victors 5-2 and edges them that little closer up the tables. It will be all gloves off next week as they face top of B' the Shed. A very interesting proposition as both teams really can't afford to lose this one. Meanwhile, in the KO cup round, through to the semis are: Grey Goose; Querneby (formerly Plainsman); Park Tavern and the Sheriffs SC, well done everyone. MEN'S: Queens came oh so close to dropping a clanger this week as the Beechdale took them up to a four nil defeat with the Queens just having to drop one more for a loss. By some inner spirit and one hell of a lot of gutsy playing they did pill the next one back. And the net, and the next, pretty soon the tables were turned at 4-4 with the Queens finally taking that vital fifth leg, Beechdale were quite understandably gutted. (the words actually muttered to me were unprintable on this page, not because they were cursing, more because I couldn't spell it). Sadly both the Cambridge and Top valley both fell under bad form this week and suffered heavy losses, one of them being the Cambridge's 7-2 loss to Park Tavern. Although it hasn't completely scuppered their chances the Park Tavern are over the moon, understandably, as their win pushes them above Cambridge and into fourth slot. A whopping good 9-0 victory saw Arnold Labour take a firm grip at the centre as CBI ended up struggling for doubles. Little change in 'B' as even taking a bye the White Lion retain top slot with a 14 leg difference on Birchover and a massive 32 on Madhouse, however, all can soon change as its points that count and with even Stevens in the top three its anybody's title yet especially with the dark horse (and Jockey) barking at the tail end.
