I have heard good things about the enthusiasm and thrust of the St Andrew's crowd. But on this evidence, it is one of the worst places in the country to watch football. Inside it is grey and dull and has the suffocating feel of a workhouse. Out in the stands it is not a lot better. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the Birmingham fans made as little sound as is physically possible until they look the lead. Not that there was a lot to shout about. The first half was dogged, unpleasant and irritating. Forest contained the hosts but rarely threatened beyond Tyson's bursts of pace. There were one or two moments of promise as Cohen battled forward and mustered some excellent football, but the sparks of inspiration faded with the game. An early Tyson breakaway, which eventually proved to be one of Forest's best chances, ended with him ballooning his shot into the stratosphere. It was no surprise – the furrowed pitch was fit for rugby league. Or cricket in Antigua. Birmingham did not have a lot to their game. McLeish has an impressive battery at his disposal, but it was Forest's defensive fragility that gave the home side their edge. Even so, Paul Smith's save from Larsson's free-kick - just a minute before the break - was one of the first saves of the match. The first half seemed to have lasted a week. Billy Davies made a

Notts County made it three wins from four home games with a 2-0 victory over Barnet this afternoon. A superb chip by Matt Hamshaw opened the scoring at Meadow Lane two minutes before the break and Jamie Clapham's fine free-kick just after the hour ensured the points were Notts. To cap off a good afternoon for County Richard Butcher and Adam Tann made their first-team returned after long spells on the sidelines with injury. Ian McParland handed a first-ever League start to young striker Ben Fairclough for the visit of the Bees in place of eight-goal Jamie Forrester, who failed to win his fitness battle to shake off a toe problem. Young Nat Wedderburn, on loan from Stoke, was also handed a starting berth in place of Adam Nowland in central midfield. After sustaining a hamstring injury two weeks ago against Chesterfield Nowland was only considering fit enough for a place on the bench. He was joined amongst the substitutes by midfield duo Gavin

spirited attempt to raise spirits with a rallying call on his way to the dressing room. The Birmingham fans, meanwhile, received their half-time 'special guests' with silent ignorance. Sadly the second half was always destined to fall in their favour. Forest had worked tirelessly and defended desperately to keep the contest open, but with Tyson frustrated and Garner invisible it was probably always going to be a 0-0 or a defeat. The first goal was a huge blow. Davies' brought on Newbold and McCleary and for a few minutes there seemed to be life in the side. But the longer Forest played without equalising, the less threatening they looked. Birmingham's second was a perfectlyexecuted toe-poke from a tight angle. I think I made more of an attempt to save it than Smith did. The game ended with a winded Forest side clinging on to its dignity as Birmingham searched for a third. It was not a disastrous performance by any means, but Forest's weaknesses are again being exposed for all to see. The Reds could be heading unstoppably for a dogfight that could so easily have been avoided by January action. Match Ratings: Smith – 5.5 –A shaky performance. At one stage he aimed a limp wrist at a comfortable cross and missed completely. Chambers – 5.5 – some of his forward passing was very poor. Wilson – 5.5 – solid in patches, but he lost control for the first goal. Morgan – 6 – lifted spirits with another cameo in attack, but one or two mistakes in defence. Moloney – 5.5 – missed a couple of headers and found himself stretched for most of the game. Heath – 6 – worked exceptionally hard to stay afloat and was one of the better defenders on the day. McGugan – 7.5 – not a particularly combative effort, but he had several magic moments with his footwork to carve out opportunities. Perch – 6.5 – some important tackles to ease pressure on the defence. Cohen - 7.5 – another tireless effort and some good football. Garner – 5 – not involved. Tyson – 7 – his pace is a tremendous asset, but alone it is not enough. Subs: Newbold – 6, McCleary – 6, Breckin – 6 Report by Alex Campbell

Strachan and Richard Butcher after long-term injuries. The game got underway with Notts attacking towards the Victoria Centre Kop Stand in the first half, and they were almost treated to an early goal but Jamie Clapham's low drive from outside the box whistled just wide. Goalmouth action was limited early on, but Notts were enjoying a little more of the ball and were looking lively going forwards. The quick-footed Fairclough was playing on the shoulders of Yakubu and Breen and always looking to get in behind the backline with his pace, and twice he forced Yakubu to make last-gasp interventions when advancing towards Harrison's goal. He came even closer on twenty-five minutes with a close-range effort that thundered back off the bar from Weston's cross, but the offside flag was raised and if he had found the net the goal wouldn't have stood. Weston was tightly marked by Devera down the left throughout, but when the 20-year-old did get away down the wing he was able to provide a number of fine crosses that put the Barnet defence on the back foot. Notts did make the breakthrough two minutes before the break however, and when it did come it was a moment of class from Matty Hamshaw that broke the deadlock. A long ball forwards wasn't dealt with by the Bees defence at all and with Harrison stranded way off his line Hamshaw Report continued to page 8

minutes to leave the result in no doubt. Brian King and Paul Linford shared four of the goals and Michael Nester completed the tally. Old Elizabethans jumped to third place following their 5-2 defeat of County NALGO. Despite a fine display, veteran 'keeper Tony Dryden could do nothing with the two deflected goals included in O.E.s' tally which comprised an Ahron Mason double and solitary efforts from Alex McLean, Andy Jones and substitute Tony Shaw. Joe Gent brought the score to 1-1 for NALGO and David Cooper was their other scorer. In the only other match played Beeston OBA trounced Brunts Old Boys 8-0 and as a result of their enhanced goal difference now lead Brunts in the table. NAA - NETHERFIELD BOYS HAMMER PEGASUS IN DIVISION 3 SHOCKER! Due to the snow and rain only 3 matches survived this week. The two games in the Cup both went the way of the higher league sides with Ashland Rovers Res beating Basford 8-1 and Calverton MW Res beating Real Utd 7-4. The shock result of the day saw lowly division 3 side Netherfield Boys record an excellent 8-5 victory over third place Pegasus.

COMBINATION -CALVERTON GO 11 GAMES UNBEATEN! Once again the weather decimated the league fixtures with only 10 games played throughout the league of which Calverton Miners Welfare Versus Sporting Wheelbarrow was one. With the teams at the opposite ends of the table both needed to win for opposing reasons and it was indeed Calverton who took full advantage by stretching their 100% league form to 11 games and in doing so went to the top of the Premier division with a 3-2 home win courtesy of a strike apiece from Billy Armstrong, Callum Jayes and Sam Hilton. Sporting struggling at the wrong end of the table hit back through Danny Wright and Matthew Fitchet. The only other Premier game saw Wellington Inn beat Kimberley MW 4-3 despite going down to an early goal to Kimberley scored by Jake Fisher. Jamie Palfreymen then levelled for

the home side before Ben smith sent them in 2-1 up at the break. Sam Palfreyman scored to make it 3-1 before Carl Beecham reduced the arrears soon after. Wellingtons 2 goal advantage was restored by Darren Clark to ease the tension and despite Jake Fisher scoring late on they held out for the win that draws them level on points with their visitors just above mid table. A1 Glazing dropped 4 places from 2nd to 6th in the div 1 table as all the teams below them vying for honours all managed wins with CNC being the biggest winners on the day by not only replacing A1 in second spot but scoring a dozen goals in the process. Matthew Murphy top scored for the visitors with 4 goals and he was ably assisted in his sides 12-1 win by Adam Murphy 3, Anthony Robinson 3, Michael Jones and Ian corden. Paul Coleman grabbed Hucknall's consolation goal. Beechdale Villa scored all their goals in the second half of their home match against Springfield with Goalkeeper Darren Betts opening the scoring when he played the ball out through midfield and kept on running with it before unleashing a 25 yard shot into the opposing net. Simon Betts then scored before Red Wilmot bagged a brace to make it 4-0. David Mantle got in on the scoring act as did Martin Cassidy with an acrobatic scissor kick before Dave White tapped home the seventh and final goal. Philip Goulby 3, Craig Lyndsey 2, James Hardstaff, Mark Croft and Gavin Mee all found the target as FC Bedstead beat Volo 8-2 who had Ian Hughes and Scott Bradburn to thank for their consolation goals. Whilst the only other div 1 game to survive saw Matthew Shaw and Dean Haworth score a goal each as New Venture won 2 nil at Beeston United to keep their hopes for honours alive. The only division two game saw Basford Rangers continue their good vein of form with a 4-1 win over Rise Park courtesy of an Ian Leebetter hat trick and a single strike from Sam Crossley. Thomas Rudd replied. Bingham Town Reserves rise up the Division three table continued with a 3-1 home win over M.I.S United. The game remained goalless during the first period thanks mainly to the visiting keeper Neil Stocks who pulled off a string of fine saves to keep his side in the game but after the break Jamie Perry fed Fred Cook through the middle and Stocks resistance was finally breached for 1-0. A slick five man passing move then followed to enable Bingham to double their advantage with a great team goal finished off by Dale McGurty. United pulled a goal back via Adam Rowley but it wasn't enough as Cook netted his second and Bingham's third to seal the win. Ray Oldham bagged a brace as Arnold Victory club won 4-2 at FC Samba. Richard Simpson also scored for the home side as did Darren Marshall with Darren Doughty and Scott gibbons replying for Samba. But the player of the day has to be Aaren Porter who scored all five of the Mills goals to send them into second spot behind leaders Bestwood re united with a 5-2 win away at P.M.R for whom Callum Grainger scored twice. EMPAL - ARNOLD CROSS KEYS TAKE TOP SPOT IN DIVISION 2! It looked like Nottingham's various Councils and Boroughs were thinking of the fairer sex this week in time for St Valentine's Day by cancelling matches all over the city! Pride of place goes to Gedling Borough Council who gave their male footie fans plenty of time to book those “special nights out by cancelling matches as early as Wednesday! About 35% of the planned matches were played but it's looking like a fixture pile up at the end of the season with the dreaded Tuesday/Thursday routine to kick in. No games in Division 1 this week. Top of the table clash in Division Two saw leaders Wheelhouse derailed from top spot as Arnold Cross Keys came out 3-1 winners. In proverbial match of two halves Wheelhouse took an early lead and maintained it to half time. Playing with the slope in the second half saw Keys unlock the Wheelhouse defence as Dean Robinson with two and Ian Day snatched the points. Both teams meet again next week with Kim Ackroyd promising revenge for Wheelhouse. Burton Joyce B are steadily improving their league position with a 3-1 win Butler Benfica which elevates them two league positions. An improved second half effort saw goals from James Moon, Richard Pinder and Jay Shepherd earn the points. Chequers United knock Punjab Colts off the top spot in Division Three after 6-1 win over mid table Clifton Dynamo. Horton hit a hat trick ably supported by Sterfan Kendal with two. A seven goal thriller saw Nottingham Medics B eventually get the better of Radcliffe Olympic by 4-3. Joseph and Conway fired the students into a two goal lead quickly cancelled out by Olympic. A late winner by White stole the three points after both teams had added further goals to make it 3-3 with minutes to spare. St Anns hit the forty-point mark in division 4 from just 14 matches after a 10-1 win over Caythorpe to increase their lead to thirteen points from Wollaton Pirates Reserves. Real Bulwell beat Clifton Dynamo Reserves 40 to swap places in the table. County Cup Round Up Radcliffe Olympic Sunday storm into the County Junior Cup Semi's after convincing 3-1 win over Retford favourites Bridon Sports. Lee Potts with two and Chris Barnes the all important goals. Wollaton Pirates beat Clifton Bridge Inn 4-1 in all Empal clash. Fanzines United and FC Grey Mare Olympico matches were off. In the Minor Cup Beeston Athletic eventually succumbed 4-2 to Josephs Old Boys. NOTTS SUNDAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE - CUP SHOCK AS Claypole Warriors CLUMBER BEAT SCOTSMAN & CLIFTON VILLA DEFEAT SCOTS Holy Trinity Res Sawmill GREY! Once again this weekend, the adverse weather bit deep into the fixtures with only two surviving in the whole of the Premier Section. However, both Notts FA Senior Trophy semi-finals survived and produced surprising outcomes. Holders; Flying Scotsman from Retford travelled to Clumber and left with their tails between their legs having been soundly thrashed 6-1. Jared Westcarr got the hosts off to a flying start by netting after just two minutes and twenty minutes later repeated the feat. It was 2-0 at the break and Scotsman hit back soon after the restart through John Woodward. However, this was just a small glitch in the proceedings as Sirus O'Connor restored the two goal cushion and then Clumber went on the rampage in the last quarter, with Westcarr doubling his tally with two more goals and Wes Burke completing in spectacular style with a 25 yard screamer. The other tie was equally exciting with last years finalists and three times winners Scots Grey falling to their nemesis, Clifton Villa. It didn't appear that a surprise was on the cards as Jamie Moore swept Scots into an early lead but Villa weren't to be denied and Justin Jenkins fired them level after 25 minutes. This boosted their confidence and Antwon Bonnick netted a double to give them a 3-1 advantage at half-time. Scots Grey are renowned for their resilience and Will Heath reduced the arrears mid way through the second period only to be eclipsed almost immediately by a fourth goal from Carl Spencer to give Villa a well deserved 4-2 victory and form an all Sunday League Final. In the League, Division One outfit, Trowsers were rewarded for their efforts to find a playable ground by taking over at the top by virtue of a 5-1 defeat of Stratford Haven. Grant Redwood netted a pair, supported by efforts from Wayne Loseby, Arron Bagguley and Jodie Hughes, as Joel English replied. It was similar circumstances and the same outcome between Rolls Royce Leisure Villa and Portland Arms HH. Portland's ground at the racecourse was deemed unfit and both sides agreed to reverse the fixture to play at Hucknall. This proved positive for the home side as Adam Brown struck twice and Ross Cheeseman once in a 3-1 victory that took Rolls to the head of the table. Dan Walsh responded for Portland Arms HH. TEAM GB THE DEBATE CONTINUES! More news and confusion recently over whether or not we will have a GB Football team at the Olympics. It seems the English FA are for it but the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish football associations have written a joint letter stating their opposition to the plan stating 'they will not discuss the issue further'. The letter was sent to Fifa, football's world governing body, the British Olympic Association (BOA) and the English FA. Despite assurances to the contrary from Fifa last month, the letter claims a British Olympic team would set a precedent that could threaten their status as independent footballing nations. Gordon Brown who is very much behind a GB Football team for the Olympics is still insisting the plans could still go ahead. Sir Alex Ferguson, Mr Brown's first choice as Team GB manager, has also put a spanner in the works, saying that he will have retired from football management by 2012. A Scottish Football Association (SFA) source said: "We got together with the other home nations and three of us are in agreement. We are taking it as read that there will be a threat to our independence. Serious figures in world football say we should not do this but the BOA are trying to railroad us into it. There is no way to stop Scottish players taking part in it but they would be going against the express wishes of the SFA and it wouldn't do their international career any good." The source then went on to say discussions over the issue were over, adding: "There has been a line made in the sand and the SFA want no more of this." The letter was signed by the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish association presidents who all agree that

football should not be an Olympic sport, and that, as an under-23 event, it is discriminatory and that clubs would lose players for a vital part of the season. The English FA are in support of the plan but many Scots are against including former manager Craig Brown who has handed in a petition to the SFA opposing it. The SNP Sports Minister went a step further and labelled a British team as a "daft and dangerous idea" and has called on Gordon Brown to ditch his support for the plan claiming it is 'jeopardising the future of the Scottish national side' FIFA President Sepp Blatter has caused no end of confusion firstly stating a Team GB would not threaten the associations' independence and then remarking later that a Team GB would "automatically" raise questions about why the UK should have "four associations and four votes and their own vice-presidency". Since that time Downing Street have insisted they have received water-tight assurances from Fifa to the contrary but lets face it with Sepp you never know! A Downing Street spokesman last week stated: "We're glad Fifa have clarified the situation and continue to be keen to play a role in ensuring that in 2012 we have a GB team." Meanwhile David Cameron, the Tory leader, has suggested a tournament of the four home nations, with the winner representing Britain in the Olympics – It's all pretty confusing stuff and the debate will no doubt continue right up until the Olympics. What do you think? Do you believe we should have a GB Football Team for the 2012 Olympics? Email info@ballsmania.net and we will publish the pole in next weeks edition!

on six minutes. As one of the seven sides who have applied for promotion to the UniBond League, they may feel they still have a slight chance of going despite being twelve points behind Mickleover Sports as they have a couple of games in hand of the leaders. Maltby Main have moved up to eleventh after they produced a remarkable comeback to claim a 2-2 draw at home to Parkgate. Mark Caine struck twice in five minutes just after the half-hour mark to give the visitors what was a seemingly comfortable cushion going into the last eleven minutes. But, Maltby were not going to be denied as Rob Branagan halved the deficit on 79 minutes before, five minutes later, Neil Longhurst also found the net to share the spoils. There was also late drama at Langwith Road as a last-minute strike from Chris Coy earned Thackley a 2-1 victory at Shirebrook Town. Darryll Leach had put the away side ahead on the hour mark and Shirebrook, who are in the bottom four, looked to be heading for defeat when they levelled the scores. Marc Sherlock grabbed the equaliser on 85 minutes but they could not hold on and Coy struck to give

Thackley the win that keeps them eighth but now four points clear of the side below them, Hallam. In the only Division One game played, Scarborough Athletic's seemingly relentless run to the title continued with a 6-0 win at home to Bottesford Town. Rob Ellis started the scoring in the second minute but the Seadogs had to wait until early into the second period before they added to that. David Hartas doubled their lead before four goals in fifteen minutes made sure of the win to move them eleven points clear with games in hand. Daniel Gray grabbed a double whilst the League's top scorer Ryan Blott and Richard Medcalf also found the net in a comfortable victory in front of a crowd of 477 at Queensgate. turned round level at the break. 3 minutes into the 2nd half Aaron Ryan put Gedling in front and the flood gates opened with Epps adding his 2nd on the hour mark and Aaron Large adding a 20 minute hat trick to complete the scoring. The victory put Gedling back in 2nd spot, on goal difference above Dunkirk, and 1 point behind leaders Kirby Muxloe. Heanor, with only 4 points posted in 2009, continue to struggle just above the bottom of the table in 14th place.

CENTRAL MIDLANDS LEAGUE In the Buckingham Insurance Supreme Division, Lincolnshire club Harrowby United, stopped a run of fourteen matches without a win, at Rolls Royce Leisure, the visitors winning impressively 4-1. This result took Harrowby above Rolls in the table, into sixteenth place. Jamie Hales led the way for United, scoring twice, Simon Bowland and Paul Chettle adding the other goals. Paddy McShane scored for Rolls but the home team did not help themselves by missing two penalties. 4-0 in front at half time, Newark Town where seemingly on the way to a big victory over visitors Kinsley Boys, at Collingham but the second half certainly belonged to the visitors but they where only able to pull one goal back, converted by Lee Beckley after 65 minutes. Matt Roche (2), Ian Wain and Sam Wilford scored for Newark Town. A welcome win, after recent reversals at home, for the Town, the win takes them up to sixth place. Immediately above Newark, in fifth place, are Ollerton Town, they gave an impressive performance, at home, against Pinxton winning 3-0, with goals by Julian Topliss, Rob Evans and Keir Webster. Phoenix Sports and Social, secured a great win over the leaders of the Black Dragon Premier Division, Westella & Willerby last Saturday. Certainly at half time, today, they looked like repeating that impressive performance, at home, against Derbyshire visitors Parkhouse. 2-0 in front, both goals being converted by the impressive, Erbima Mendy, one a penalty that he put away in style it seemed that Phoenix would go on and win comfortably, but Parkhouse did not read the script and scored twice in the last ten minutes to share the points. David Chambers and Ashley Barber scored the goals that gave some comfort to the visiting supporters on their return home to Derbyshire. It could have been different if Mendy had not missed a last minute penalty, which would have given him his hat trick. Thoresby Colliery Welfare had a

comfortable home win against Bulwell Town winning 5-0. Ross Whitehead (2), Matthew Wright, Matthew Worthington and Tony Buchanan scoring the goals. Two matches took place in the Abacus Lighting Reserves Supreme Division. Lee Day hit a brace for Dunkirk Reserves, who won an eight goal thriller, against visitors Belper Town Reserves, the Nottinghamshire team won 5-3. A last minute goal scored by Craig Burton, gave Teversal Reserves victory over the bottom team Radford Reserves, the visitors winning 2-1. Danny Plum scored the other goal for Teversal in the first half, Joe Lowe equalising for Radford after the interval. Welbeck Welfare may be bottom of the Black Dragon Premier Division, but their cup exploits are well known, again today they gave high flying Louth Town problems, before they bowed out of the Quartet Catering League Challenge Cup, losing their Third Round tie 2-1. In a match described as a credit to the CMFL, the visitors took the lead right on half time with a goal by Sam Smith; this was hard on the home team who had certainly the better of the opening forty five minutes. Louth stepped up a gear after the interval and doubled their score on the hour, Paul Watts scoring. Leigh Warriner pulled a goal back for Welbeck but there was no happy ending, on this occasion for the home team, but they can be proud of their displays again in this competition. In a Notts F A Intermediate Cup Quarter Final tie, Carlton Town Reserves reached the Semi-Finals with a 3-0 away win at Sandhurst. Report by Frank Harwood

EAST MIDLANDS COUNTIES LEAGUE Once more the weather took its toll, leaving only 1 match played out off the complete programme. Gedling Town played host to Heanor Town who took the lead after 12 minutes through an own goal. Graham Epps eventually equalised for Gedling on the half hour so that the teams

Hyde United 2 Hucknall Town 0 Hucknall Town suffered their first defeat of 2009 when they were beaten 2-0 at Hyde United in the big Blue Square North relegation tussle at Ewen Fields. In truth it wasn`t a good performance by the Yellows and they can have little complaint at the scoreline conceding two goals in the minute before half time. Town took the field without striker Gary Ricketts, who was serving a one match suspension, and Deon Meikle was on the subs bench. The first goal came on the stroke of half time from the penalty spot when Cashell Walters handled and Hyde`s leading goalscorer Chris Simm converted the spot kick. Worse was to follow for the visitors seconds later, when in time added on David Morley powered home a header to double the home side`s advantage. Hucknall came into the game a little in the second half but failed to create any real clear cut chances and a disappointing afternoon ended with nothing to show. Town have it all to do now next Saturday when the face a long trip to Gateshead for their next Blue Square North league game. Carlton continued the attack forcing the Lincoln defence into conceding several corners but nothing came from this pressure. Thomas again had a good opportunity but shot wide after being put through by Marquin Smith. It took half an hour before Lincoln tested out Carlton keeper Ali Barcherini when Ben Good shot wide of the post. Danny George kept carlton at bay just before the interval after clearing a Martin Ball shot off the line with Ziccardi beaten. Good again replied for the visitors but tamely shot at Barcherini. Carlton started brightly in the second half but found the Lincoln

Non-League Football! an initial reaction save by Walstow in the Kinsley net. Town dominated the opening exchanges, but were constantly reminded of Kinsley's attacking threat with Radford's shot well saved by Chris Riley . The Blues broke downfield after this chance, and a long ball found Matt Roche, who outpaced the full back, and opened his account for Town with a neat flick over the advancing keeper to double the advantage on 18 minutes. Kinsley immediately put the pressure back on Newark, and could have pulled a goal back three minutes later, when Beckley rounded Riley on the edge of the area. His shot however, was intercepted and cleared to safety by Gareth Dobb. Chris Riley was called into action five minutes later, as he pulled out a great reaction save with his legs to deny Beckley. Town weathered this brief storm, and went three up on the half hour, Sam Wilford tapping in from close range as the ball ran loose from the keepers grasp, under pressure from Simon Ellison. Town increased their lead two minutes later, as Matt Roche's shot from 25 yards beat the keeper and was deflected goalwards by Taylor, to effectively end the match as a contest. Ian Wade could have furthered Town's advantage four minutes later, but his shot went inches over the bar after a knock back by Matt Roche. The four goal margin may have been what prompted Kinsley's manager to keep his side on the field at half time, in an incident reminiscent of Phil Brown's decision to keep Hull on the pitch against Manchester City. Kinsley had a golden opportunity to get a goal back early in the second half, as Beckley's shot from 2 yards out was somehow cleared off the line by Dobb. After a period of Kinsley pressure, Town had a further chance to score on 55 minutes, Matt Roche's shot beating the keeper, but not the defender on the line, as Holdsworth got back to clear, and deny him his hat trick. Matt Roche was denied again ten minutes later, when a clever free kick by David Issott put him through on goal, only to see his shot saved by the keeper's legs. Town seemed to switch off for a period after this, allowing Beckley to grab a deserved consolation goal for the visitors on 67 minutes, as he lobbed Riley from close range. In retrospect, Kinsley could have scored more over the course of the match, had it not been for a combination of good defensive play and poor finishing. Chris Self had a corner punched onto the post by Walstow minutes later, but otherwise Newark were content with their four goal lead. The last quarter of an hour was fractious and ill tempered, both sides getting cautions for petty fouls, as the game drew to a close. After the match Town boss Rupert Thomas said, “It was a match of two halves, I still think we're struggling to find a wide player, which they didn't capitalise on. Overall I feel Newark Town 4 our finishing was better than theirs”. Town will be looking Kinsley Boys 1 Newark reached the top six after a four goal first half blitz to bring this run of good form into the League Cup tie saw them overcome Kinsley Boys. Town were boosted away at Sutton on Tuesday. by the return of Simon Greenfield, who put in a good performance at centre back. Newark started the match Ollerton 3 brightly, and took the lead on 5 minutes, when Sam Pinxton FC 0 Wilford's cross was flicked towards goal by Matt Roche. Pinxton's feet were put firmly back on the ground at the Ian Wade stole in, and scored at the second attempt after lane, home of Ollerton fc, thanks to Ollerton's Julian defence in no mood to concede a goal. As the game went on Carlton continued to press forward beginning to leave their defence open to counter attack. In the dying moments of the game Carlton were caught not clearing their lines and a loose ball fell to Sean Cann to shoot home and win the game. Notts County Report continued from page 4 produced the most delicate of chips from twenty-two yards to lift the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net. The goal was Hamshaw's second of the season and his first at Meadow Lane since his summer move from Mansfield. It was the final action of the first half, and a huge confident boost for the Magpies to go in at the interval a goal to the good. Barnet started the second half looking for a quick response and Porter replaced Yakubu at the back. Bolasise headed wide from Adomah's cross nine minutes into the second half with, in all honesty, Barnet's first attempt at goal when he should really have done better from ten yards out. At the other end a superb Notts move down the right created a chance for Facey but his goalbound header was blocked on the line by Devera. Hamshaw and Picken combined superbly down the right to send Hamshaw scampering away down the wing and his pin-point cross found Facey unmarked six yards out but Devera got some part of his body in the way and Barnet survived. But, with their next opportunity, Notts did make it 2-0. Fairclough was fouled on the edge of the box and free-kick specialist Jamie Clapham stepped up to superbly curl the ball into the top left-hand corner of Harrison's goal. Sublime stuff - another great goal. Notts were playing with a spring in their step; Barnet meanwhile looked demoralised. With the game seemingly over Ian McParland felt the time was right to introduce Richard Butcher back into the action after almost three months out with a metatarsal injury. He replaced Ben Fairclough who left the field to a standing ovation. With just over ten minutes to go McParland a comeback to a second player after a long-term layoff; this time it was the turn of Adam Tann to make his return four months after sustaining a knee injury against Macclesfield in place of Michael Johnson. McParland's men were always looking to add to their tally and Butcher could have marked his return with a goal when one-onone with Harrison, but the goalkeeper stayed tall and won the battle by blocking Butcher's effort with his legs. Sean Canham replaced Facey for the final few minutes with time ebbing away - and with three points in the bag Notts will be desperate to secure back-to-back wins on Tuesday when they visit Macclesfield Town.

The score line did flatter Ollerton a little but Pinxton just wasn't at the races when the ball got into the last third, Wayne Cook did come on as sub and brighten things up and produced Pinxton's best effort of the game on 80; Josh Parkers cross was met by Cook who climbed the highest to hammer the ball with his head underside of the bar from 12 yards, but the ball bounced on the line and was cleared, but only as far as Ben Bacon who tried to slot the ball just inside the right upright but just went wide. At the back for Pinxton Sean Conner gave all his worth but had his work cut out with Lee Wilson and Julian Topliss making life hard for the Pinxton defence, after a pretty even half hour Ollerton took the lead thanks to Julian Topliss with touch of brilliance, he robbed Joe Riley of the ball 27 yards from the Pinxton goal, Topliss then took on the Pinxton defence rounding Conner then McCormack the Pinxton keeper then slotted the ball into a Pinxton's empty goal. 'Hurry,' she said, 'stand in the corner.' She rubbed baby oil all over him, then dusted him with talcum powder. 'Don't move until I tell you,' she said, 'pretend you're a statue.' 'What's this?' the husband inquired as he entered the room. 'Oh it's a statue,' she replied, 'the Smiths bought one and I liked it so I got one for us, too.' No more was said, not even when they went to bed. Around 2 AM the husband got up, went to the kitchen and returned with a sandwich and a beer. 'Here,' he said to the statue, have this. I stood like that for two days at the Smiths and nobody offered me a damned thing.' The 5th Affair A man walked into a cafe, went to the bar and ordered a beer.

'Certainly, Sir, that'll be one cent.' 'One Cent?' the man exclaimed. He glanced at the menu and asked: 'How much for a nice juicy steak and a bottle of wine?' 'A nickel,' the barman replied. 'A nickel?' exclaimed the man. 'Where's the guy who owns this place?' The bartender replied: 'Upstairs, with my wife.' The man asked: 'What's he doing upstairs with your wife?' The bartender replied: 'The same thing I'm doing to his business down here.' The 6th Affair Jake was dying. His wife sat at the bedside. NOTTS OPEN PREMIER POOL LEAGUE - CHERRY TREE ‘A’ CAUSE MAJOR UPSET! Premier 1 Last week we reported this as a potential banana skin and next season's second division Cherry Tree 'A' caused the upset of the 3rd Millennium by beating Premier League title 2nd favourites, Masters Snooker Club 7-5 to commence the long road back to promotion to the big time. Having been already relegated (by everyone) after their loss to Royal Joke two weeks previously, the current League Champions were relishing the unlikely opportunity that was handed to them, of playing such illustrious Premier League opposition so soon after their popular fall from the highest echelons of Notts pool. After a run of 36 consecutive outrageous flukes, the likes of which Matt Coates has never seen, the current League Champions from Calverton sealed each and every member of the teams' greatest ever pool triumph. In a relegation zone battle, some flaky finishing from PondaRileys including a missed 8-baller from Lee Mason saw Royal Oak take an early 2-1 lead. But the away team's strength in depth and Eurovision-class singing eventually proved too much for the Watnall 'wanabees'. Ponda-Rileys' 5-7 victory went some way towards avenging the early season reversal. Matt Tugby took the man of the match award with two fine clearances including the match winning leg, so a pat on the back for Matt and a slap in the testes for Lee! In the Sneinton spot the ball fixture, the predictably clinical league leaders cruised to an 8-4 victory to avenge their only point dropped in the home/away reverse fixture on the adjacent table. Thank you to Gary Sherwood and Trevor Chambers for their input to this report. Premier 2 Greyhound opened the league up to turn this one into a proper 3 horse race as they slipped up at home to Park Tav Langham. Only one point separate the top 3 now as the PTL's win makes them genuine title contenders now alonw with Friar Tuck who had a bye week. Elsewhere Sherwood SC took the points at the Gregory while Sherriff SC and Sun Valley shared the spoils in the other match Premier 3 Hubble Bar remain Carlton Catholic Club's closest challengers with a close win at Basford Hall and a similar close defeat by CCC to third placed Beacon. This league is arguably down to a two team slog now and the final fixture on 19th March between the big two looks set to be the match of the season. KO Cup The KO Cup semi finals will be played on Thursday 5th March at the Spot On in Sneinton. We are now down to the last 4: Park Tavern 'A', Masters, Spot On One and prem 2 side The Greyhound. The draw will take place on the night of the Semis. KO Plate The Plate semi finals will also be played at the Spot on the same night as the main cup. The semi finalists ll from Prem 2 are: Friar Tuck, Sherwood SC, Sherriff SC and Sun Valley. iendly encounter. Report by John Brinkworth

CITY LEISURE POOL LEAGUE - MOULDERS DESTROY THEIR RIVALS! Moulders won 6-2 this week against league rivals the Gladstone, D Marriott & A Rutter put the Moulders 2-0 up, pairs duo S Hanson & M Lucin (Gladstone) pulled one back to make it 2-1, K Sisson (Moulders) then put his team 3-1 up, M Shaw following up to confirm a point at 4-1, Gladstone didn't give up and duo L Wintle & captain R Westby made it 4-2, Moulders claimed the last 2 games to complete a 6-2 win. Dale showed great spirit this week through A Bell & T Brett putting the Dale 2-0 up over 1st place Adelaide, however, in form pairs duo J Morgan & I Speak (Addy) won to pull it back to 2-1, Adelaide levelled it in the 4th leg with M Bradley picking up a win, young D Belcher put the Addy in the lead at 3-2, but pairs C Smith & A Tomlinson kept their cool and levelled it back up at 3-3, captain L Ford (Addy) made sure of a point in the 7th leg in a captain clash match at 4-3, unfortunately for the Dale they had to forfeit the last leg due to running out of players giving the Adelaide a 5-3 win and 3 points. TC Headstock move into 4th place this week, after the Moot cancelled their game with not being able to raise a team, TC Headstock were given a 5-0 win. Also this week Marketside were awarded a 5-0 win, decided by the committee, after the Colonel Burnaby didn't have enough players to start the match. Report continued over -

In the first round Tosh Ledgard and Beautiful Kim Hodgkinson beat Ian and Michelle Newton without dropping a frame after Kim made couple of expert clearances including an 8-baller, and further wins for OJ Taylor and Kelly Wild, Chris Rigby and Kerry Griffiths and Tony and Vicky Wyatt saw the semi final line up concluded. The first semi final saw Tony and Vicky up against Tosh and L'il Kim and despite her best efforts to carry the team, even Kim was not able to stop Tony and Vicky powering into their sixth final with a 3-0 whitewash. The second semi final was almost as on-sided and the superior potting skills of Chris Rigby saw him and Kerry through. The final proved to be of the highest standard with 8-ballers being traded at will by Tony and Chris, which eventually saw the match into a last frame decider. In a surprisingly tactical affair, the Dragon pair took control early on and despite Tony and Vicky's exemplary play they could only watch in amazement as the Peperami Kid made another great clearance to take the title. The following night was the Averages Final, where the top player from each team had qualified for the round robin tournament. The twelve players were split into two groups of six and played each other, with the top two moving through to the semi final. Group one witnessed the biggest shock of the night when Division two players, Matt Coates and the rejuvenated Alan Gregory, displaying all his years of experience, both earned semi final spots at the expense of other more illustrious first division opposition. Group two went more as expected with two first division qualifiers, although the form book was turned on it's head when veteran Dave Clarke luckily beat Calverton & Arnold Interleague and County star, Simon Thompson to join Tony

Wyatt in the semi final line up. The shocks kept coming in the semi finals as Matt Coates beat previous winner Tony Wyatt in the deciding frame of the first, although normality resumed in the second, as Alan Gregory, rolling back the years, destroyed a hapless Dave Clarke without dropping a frame. The Final was a classic match that was only spoiled by the result, as Matt Coates sneaked over the line in the decider, even though Hotdog Gregory had proved to be the better player. The final night of competitions saw the inaugural 8 Ball Trophy Tournament which was open to all players who had achieved the feat of an 8 Ball clearance in the season, with a League record prize-fund on offer. Sixteen players entered and eventually after Ashley Radford had beaten Danny Butler and Tom Hodgkinson had edged past Simon Thompson in the semi finals, Ashley Radford claimed his third individual title of the season and the £500 first prize to cap off a great season for the trainee celebrity hairstylist. NOTTINGHAM & NOTTS INSTITUES ASSOCIATION SNOOKER - BCI’A’ BEAT TOP SPOT WITH JUST 3 MEN! KNOCKOUT CUP Mapperley Community Centre defeated Sherwood Social Club 'B' in a delayed quarter-final match. Mapperley will now face BCI Snooker Centre 'E' in the semi-finals.

A 21 point start was the incentive for a massive win by Carlton Liberal Club against Top Spot. Danny Di Folco took the first frame in a close match with Mick Walker by 46-44. Bob Walker shone in the second frame, a 16 and a 24 break helping him to a 66-42 victory over Dave Milner. Milner had a very good 29 break in this frame. The fourth frame was a tragedy of errors by both players, and some flukes, but Bob Wright eventually ran out the winner by 64-63. Steve Needham was having the same amount of luck as his opponent, but it was a good blue and pink that won the frame for Wright. The third frame, which finished last, was a spectacularly easy win for Andy Ball. Ball beating C Needham by 70-12. Needham conceding the last three colours after it was evident that Top Spot had lost the contest. KNOCKOUT PLATE In the knockout plate semi-finals there was an easy win for Sherwood Social Club 'A' despite having to concede 77 points to Nottingham Forest Sportsman Social Club. Lee Crombie pulled 30 points back with a good 65-35 win against Harvey Pabla. Ant Scarborough made it another 22 points with a good 77-55 win. Jason Turner put Sherwood into the lead, defeating William 68-32. It was left to Brendan Murtagh to finish the rout with a magnificent 93-30 win over Keiron. NAZARETH HOUSE SNOOKER LEAGUE - BEESTON DEFEAT STADIUM LEISURE IN NAIL BITER! DIVISION 1 Arnold Civil Defence 'A' suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 6-2 to title rivals BCI Snooker Centre 'A'. BCI did the damage at home with a comprehensive 4-0 victory with wins for Jason Bettridge, Neil Elliott and Steve Coleman in the singles. At Arnold things were tighter with the dangerous trio of Spencer, Winter and Fountain playing for Arnold. Wayne Martin got BCI off to a good start with victory over Gary Spencer but Chris Winter levelled things up with a solid performance against Jon Mason. John Fountain comprehensively defeated Kwok Yip with a 35 break. This left the pairings of Martin and Mason against Winter and Fountain, with BCI coming out on top in a tactical frame. Stadium Leisure secured another valuable point with a 4-4 draw against Beeston Snooker Hall, largely due to good performances from Barry Stark and Bob Walker. At Stadium, Barry Stark demolished Shane Kidd 83-18 but Matt Ellis lost on the black against Lee Harlow 55-60. Alan Ball then went down 26-74 to Clint I'Anson who did the damage with an excellent 52 break. Stark and Ellis then ensured the leg was tied with a 71-24 win against I'Anson and Sean Harlow. At Beeston, Tom Walters won a black ball frame against Danny Di Folco 66-54 but Bob Walker had a run of 32 on the way to a 49-38 win over Andy Spicer. Continued over -

Neil Jones made a terrific 56 clearance to defeat Steve Butler 93-31. In the pairs Butler and Walker took on Jones and Chris Hodgkinson. Jones made a 32 break but Walker was on fire as he had breaks of 23 and 38 to effectively seal the frame 79-40. Stadium were delighted with a draw in the absence of Pete Gormley, Clary Plowman and Ross Wilkin through illness. Pegasus Snooker Club were made to wait until the final frame to secure the points against bottom of the table Arnold Civil Defence 'B'. At Pegasus, Chris Brooks knocked in the night's highest break with an excellent 82 against Arnold skipper Alan Cunningham. Jamie Mathers put Pegasus two up with a comfortable victory in his frame against Andy Nichols before Kirk Wesselby managed to fight off a good come-back from Andy Orange to pick up a frame for Arnold. Wesselby had looked comfortable leading by 32 with only the colours remaining but his failure to get out of two well laid snookers allowed Orange back into the frame, but it was Wesselby who held his nerve to sink a frame winning black. Brooks and Mathers then won in the pairs to secure a 3-1 home leg win. At Arnold, Sean Kelly looked in good touch knocking in a well taken 32 break to see off Pegasus's Chris Piech to give the home side a perfect start. Pat McLaughlin before Pete Ellins restored the lead for Arnold with victory over a determined Eric Towle. With the overall scoreline now at 4-3 in Pegasus's favour, the final doubles frame would give Arnold a real opportunity to pick up a valuable point for the club. Sadly for Arnold the pairing of Kelly & Ellins never really got going and they soon fell behind by some 30 odd points before Langdon put the frame out of reach with a match winning 48 break to give Pegasus a narrow but important 5-3 win. The Peoples Hall could only muster a 4-4 draw against Cotgrave Welfare. Nav Hussain was on form, firing in a terrific 77 break. DIVISION 2 Wollaton Royal British Legion kept their slim hopes of a playoff place alive with a 5-3 win over City Hospital Leisure Centre. At City Hospital Rob Wallace beat A Winson 46-30, Sean Croft lost 40-62 to M Healy and Jordan Parnham lost 33-44 to M Hind. In the pairs Lee Archer and Wallace beat Hind and Healy 70-31. At Wollaton, Gordon Gunn lost 22-66 to the impressive Dave Buckley. Rex Benson beat Russ Kirk 52-41 and Ivan Noon beat Alan Taylor 48-14. In the pairs, Benson and Jack Packer beat Buckley and Dennis Peet. Report by Steve Butler

Chequers close at hand but also having the edge of being a game in hand on the Nook. A win on the Nooks bye week could see the chequers take the lead but to be honest, LADIES: Its getting Hot and furious in the race for the title in they've still got an uphill fight especially this week as they the Ladies in what is culminating in a brilliant finale to the face two really tough competitors in the Festival and Boat & season with just four league matches to go. If Birchover can Horses B, respectively, definitely not teams to be sniffed at. hold their close rivals down this week and beat them at the NOTTINGHAM CENTRAL DARTS Birchover then it will be plain sailing for them as champions being in an unattainable position from the opposition. LADIES: Its still a way to go in division A as the heat turns up Birchover also have the advantage of a game in hand too. It and the oche gets hot in the race for the championship. Good will be a tough battle between these two but if the Boat and 5-2 victories from the Clifton Bridge and the Strelley pushes Horses lose to Birchover then it will be an all ensuing battle the Cambridge gals into fourth place on leg difference as the between Pelican, Chequers and Boat and Horses who all Strelley continue their comeback campaign. This week has have three games left and all are vying for that runners up seen some great grit n darts from some of these ladies teams slot. Pelican take their bye week this week and can only as, with seven matches still to go they're all showing the watch the ensuing battle unfurl before them knowing they will 'never say die' attitude as the battle for the crème de crème slot continues. Beacon also move up a peg with a close win have it all to do next week. MEN'S: Boat & Horses 5-4 victory over the Boat (Lenton) over the Builders. Division B's Nuthall miss out on a big almost makes their championship position untenable to chance to move up on the Park who had their Bye this week opposition teams leaving them just one more win to secure a after losing out 4-3 to the superior play of the White Horse in a victory. Runners up slot is still wide open however as Queens close match. Its gonna be a real tight finish to the ladies this & Boat square up in joint second on points but, to their costly season with no fewer than six matches being cancelled and losses, the Birchover also plant themselves back in the frame not a chance of them being pulled in on a match night which with a close, very close, 5-4 victory over the Jaguar. Division means that alternative nights to Mondays will have to fulfil B has the Inham Nook ahead on a slight leg difference with these matches and obviously with more than one game a

week it may well end up having an adverse effect with some teams maybe not fielding either a full or their normal side, could put a whole new outcome on the season finale. With ALL matches having to be fulfilled prior to the last league match of the season these gals have only a mere six weeks to get their stall out. Worse hit are the Old General v Gladstone who have yet to play each of their cancelled matches this season. MIXED: Nuthall B secured a brilliant win over Headstocks to push them that much closer to securing the runners up slot in the championship. Madhouse 5-2 victory brings an end to the Cambridge's unbeaten run, and oh so close to the season finale for them, with jus three matches left, but star of the night was Donna Mellish who despite severe back pain could only play her game with the aid of a crutch to enable her to walk or stand up. She and her partner Rob Bamford won their leg and clinched the game 4-2 before Madhouse secured last leg to make the final score 5-2 in a very tight match. Despite the loss Cambridge's victory seems imminent with just one win needed to secure the championship. The Shed's win over the White lion leaves them well in the running for victory in 'B' but with five games to play it could still be open season up there especially with all close rivals also securing brilliant victories. MEN'S: Top of championships remains unchanged with both Queens and Beechdale hammering home brilliant 7-2 victories, these guys are really getting to be inseparable now as each team vie for that extra leg and the Beechdale desperate to close on the Queens four point advantage. But with just six matches left and the Queens having only lost one match they will be even more determined to cling to that lead. Division B has White Lion, Birchover and Madhouse all in the fight for that top slot with the Lion having the advantage of a game in hand but not to be dismissed and waiting to pounce from the wings are the Horse and Jockey who are also a game in hand. who flew home on Saturday and went straight to Sheffield for a match up with the league-leading Steelers.

Not the best of weekend’s for the Panthers Belfast Giants 5 Nottingham Panthers 4 (Pens) GMB Panthers pulled off a dramatic late equaliser to take a point from their trip to Belfast, but went down on penalties by a 5-4 margin in the end. With Jade Galbraith having scored the GMB panthers had a third period mountain to climb trailing 4-1. Still trailing by three with eight minutes to go, goals from Dan Tessier and Johan Molin set up a dramatic finale. With the score at 4-3 and on a five-on-three powerplay, Michel Robinson was called to the bench and the extra skater ploy worked just after Giants got a man back with Bruce Richardson netting to take the game into overtime. A late penalty against the GMB Panthers though meant they started overtime short-handed. That powerplay was killed off but with no further scoring the game went to penalties. Eventually the Giants snagged the extra point in the shoot-out. After six saves in the first round and another by Giants keeper Lyle, Belfast scored their first in round two to sneak the victory, but it was character laden performance from the never-say-die GMB Panthers

Sheffield Steelers 4 Nottingham Panthers 3 (Pens) The GMB Nottingham Panthers lost out in the second round of sudden death penalties to league leaders Sheffield on Saturday night. Jade Glabraith opened the scoring in the eighth minute which prompted the full-strength home side to adopt a much more physical approach against their short-benched opponents and Matthew Myers was carried off with a leg injury. Steelers equalised soon afterwards. In the second period Basiuk went for two minutes for kneeing Dan Tessier who joined Matthew in the treatment room but Jade Galbraith's second goal put us back in front only for two goals in 36 seconds by the home side to give them the edge going into the third. Brendan Cook broke in short-handed to equalise in the third and the game went to overtime and then penalties. It was a battling performance from the GMB Panthers though, the trip to Belfast meant for tired legs in the third and everyone gave their all for the cause to leave coach Corey Neilson proud in defeat afterwards. The injuries to Matthew and Dan will be assessed over the next couple of days. Danny Meyers and David Clarke are still sidelined by injury.
