Forest are in real danger. It is clearer now than ever before. Promoted by default with a fairly poor side, and lead into the Championship with a skeletal squad and barely enough paper to hide the cracks. It is a sickly weak side of pallid skeletons and fluttering stomachs. The more experienced professionals in the team, including Smith, Breckin, Wilson and Chambers, are a division above their standard. The youngsters have been thrown overboard without their floats. And if Nottingham Forest are sinking like the Titanic, this could well have been the iceberg. It was a disaster. Only an ailing Forest side can destroy the pageant of a derby day with this level of barbarism. The stage was set to perfection. The sun illuminated the ground as though it was the first day of summer, and with the tannoy silenced the atmosphere bubbled to a searing crescendo. But from the first whistle it would only get progressively worse. An average but industrious Derby side with simple ideas and basic efficiency left Forest reeling. Within four awkward minutes they had taken the lead, and it was fairly obvious that there would be no coming back. Robert Earnshaw came closest to equalising as he raced on to McGugan's through ball deep into the first half, but the ball wouldn't sink in time as Bywater approached and his lob landed in the roof of the net. It would have been an equaliser that Forest

Notts County suffered their first defeat since the end of January with a 2-0 defeat at Bury this afternoon. County were unfortunate to find themselves a goal down at the break which came from Bury's leading scorer Andy Bishop on forty minutes at Gigg Lane. The win was secured late on through defender Efe Sodje's close-range finish. Richard Butcher was handed his first start in three months at Gigg Lane after recovering from a metatarsal injury; he replaced Nat Wedderburn in the middle of the park in the only change from the side that started at Macclesfield in midweek. Michael Johnson was fit enough to start after picking up a head injury at Macclesfield while leading scorer Jamie Forrester was named on the bench after recovering from a toe injury that forced him to miss the win over Barnet and the Macclesfield game. In their black and white stripes County got the game underway and

scarcely deserved. Derby have learned from each of their meetings with Forest and have improved every single time. Today they sat deep and absorbed Nathan Tyson's runs, they closed down Forest's mechanical 10yard passes and squeezed tight on their tottering defenders. Forest meanwhile, had taken nothing from a humiliating defeat and two scrappy draws against the very same side. Hulse and Commons again looked twice the quality they actually are. Their defence will scarcely have an easier game all season. Immediately after half-time Rob Hulse put the result almost beyond doubt, and a clumsy James Perch laid on a penalty to seal the rout. Only with Derby reduced to ten men as McEveley went off injured could an atrocious Forest muster a consolation. Match Ratings: Smith – 5 – woeful uncertainty in dealing with balls into the box. The entire defence is less confident when he plays. The looks of horror on his face when he came flying off his line late on told a thousand stories. Chambers – 4 – how many of his long balls forward fell straight to Derby feet? Too many to count, that's for certain. Morgan – 5.5 – salvaged a clumsy display with one or two botched roves into attack. The defence as a whole was pulled apart by some very simple football, and he has to take his share of the blame. Breckin – 4.5 – excellent last ditch tackle on Commons in the first half, but he was pulled to pieces. Heath – 5.5 – struggled defensively but showed more confidence on the ball than most of his colleagues. He can hold his head up, but our defence is not the sort to comfortably accommodate burgeoning youngsters. Anderson – 4.5 – I'm pleased that, as a loanee, he was prepared to fight his way into the side. But he wasn't ready for a return, and it showed. McGugan – 5.5 – as frustrating as his 'energy levels' were, again, his individual play was our only outlet all game. Perch – 4 – anything but captain material. Stupid penalty. Cohen – 5.5 – all of the huffing and puffing a man can muster, but this was not his day. Earnshaw – 5.5 – scored, but missed plenty of chances that he'd have bagged if fit. Tyson – 4 – an unwelcome return for the brick-feeted first touch and runs into scotch mist. Report by Alex Campbell

started positively by taking the game to the Shakers. A nice move between Forte and Butcher created a pocket of space on the edge of the area for the returning midfielder to advance towards goal but Cresswell did well for Bury to hold off Butcher and clear his lines. Bury almost opened the scoring on fourteen minutes from a corner but Delroy Facey was perfected placed at the far post to clear Andy Bishop's glancing header off the line. The home side had a goal ruled through Bennett at the midway point of the half for a foul which the Shakers strongly protested about. A minute later Forte burst clear and he beat the onrushing Tyler to the ball, but he was forced wide by no less than four Bury defenders which meant Notts couldn't force the ball into the box and take advantage of the situation. On twenty-five the Shakers had a penalty claim waved away by Referee Mr Beeby after Pilkington and Morrell clashed just inside the Notts area, with the home fans reacting furiously and they were quick to vent their frustration at the official. After reducing the home side to barely any opportunities their leading scorer Andy Bishop provided a moment of class to open the scoring five minutes before the break. After a foul by Sodje on Weston went un-noticed the home side broke forwards Report continued on page 8

NSL - SOUTHBANK SHOCK LEAGUE LEADERS! Gedling Southbank produced a huge shock in the Senior Division with an excellent 3-2 away win at table toppers Wollaton. Gedling headed into the match sitting bottom of the league, but Hough, Lee and Elliot goals were enough for them to claim three points and jump off the foot of the table. Evans and Hawkes scored for Wollaton, who stay top by three points. Pelican weren't able to take advantage, being held to a home draw by Keyworth United. Danny Blanchard continued his rich vein of scoring form, another double to take his tally to 13 for the season but Ravenscross and Bremner netted for Keyworth to ensure them a point. Basford fell further behind the leaders suffering a defeat to Magdala courtesy of a solitary Mark Curry strike. It's good news for Magdala however, who are building an impressive points tally, just five adrift of the top, but have played several games more than all of the teams around them. Awsworth dropped to the bottom, despite picking up a point at home to Kimberley. Habgood and Walker netted for Kimberley but Robinson and Saxton replied for the home side, yet this still wasn't enough to prevent them falling below Gedling into 17th place. Attenborough and Ruddington picked up useful wins in their respective battles against relegation. Ruddington were winners in an entertaining match against Cotgrave CW, running out 4-3 victors, Oldham, Wallace, Russell and Watkins goals for Rudd whilst Nicholls, Brodsky and Penley were on the score-sheet for Cotgrave. Attenborough won at home to Notts Police, Towerzy and Constable goals giving Boro their second successive win. COMBINATION - CHASE FOR THE TITLE HOTS UP! The Premier division is slowly but surely edging its way to a three horse race as both Kimberley MW and Wellington Inn saw their faint hopes of honours disappear by dropping points to AC Broxtowe and Greyfriars respectively. Although Jake Fisher struck a hat trick for 4th placed Kimberly at home to AC Broxtowe it wasn't enough as S Whitely, T Nadif, D Mason and T Law all struck back for the visitors to earn a 4 all draw. L Baker notched Kimberly's other goal whilst James Needham 3 and Lee Carter helped Greyfriars to a 4-1 win over Wellington for whom John Hughes replied. Gedling United won 4-2 at home to Bear thanks to a 2 goal salvo from Kev walker and a single by Loren young all in the last 9 minutes added to Jason Rimmells early strike to keep the pressure up on leaders Calverton MW who were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Bestwood MW who also ended Calverton's 100% record in the process. Leon Wilson gave the visitors a first half lead with a deflected effort and it remained that way until the 65th minute when Alex Clarsson levelled from the spot to earn a share of the spoils following a hand ball decision. Gremio and Man in Space took full advantage of the rules and played two one hour games to drag their weather hit seasons up to date but unfortunately for Gremio it was Space who claimed all 6 points on offer as they won 5-1 and 3-0 respectively. Despite scoring a hat trick and putting his side in front twice, Andy Wathey's efforts were all in vane as his side AFC Hucknall eventually went down 5-3 at Oakdale as both teams battle to obtain a division one mid table place. Trailing 2-1 at half time Oakdale made three substitutions and that made all the difference as Devon Graham and Dean Mclean scored a brace apiece to add to Andrew Cordon's first half strike to enable them to complete a great come back. At the business end of the table AFC Bridgford won the battle of the top two after Jonathan Martin and Matt Astill scored a goal each to earn his side a 2-1 win over CNC who pulled one back when Adam Robinson converted from the spot. Coupled with other results this loss proved costly for CNC as they dropped to 5th place in a tightly packed top half of the table. Replacing them in second position are Beechdale villa who had a convincing 9-1 win at Beeston United thanks mainly to Red Wilmott and S Betts who both netted hat tricks. Damian Larcombe 2, Robert Lindsay 2, Craig Lindsay and Philip Gouldby all notched for FC Bedstead as they scored 6 without reply at Springfield to go third whilst A1 Glazing secured a 3-1 at D.T.D to also climb above C.N.C. Michael Grinnion helped himself to 4 goals including Medz Red's 100th league goal of the campaign as they put 10 past Munich 79 without reply to keep them top of division two on goal difference over Blacks head who continue to remain hot on their heels following a 13 goal white wash of Pride of Erin. spoils in a 2 all draw with Basford United despite dominating most of the game. Leon Wilson opened the scoring for the visitors against the run of play mid way through the first half but pure's dominance paid off when Warren Lovegrove resumed the status qou before the interval with an unstoppable 20 yard free kick into the top corner. The home side continued to press and should have been out of sight by the time Luke Thorpe eventually put them in front but their inability to finish cost them dear and basford produced a sucker punch to earn a share of the spoils when Wilson notched his second of the game. Carl O'rafferty, Miles Snape, Andrew Flint and Darren Allen all scored for their respective sides as Nott's United also drew by the same score line at home to Wagon & Horses. Whilst Chris Burrows helped himself to a hat trick in New Inns 5-3 home win over NCH for whom Marco Pallini, Ray Eddyshaw and Steve Hogarth replied. Sean Annable and Mick Sherret also notched for New Inn. Southbank struggling at the wrong end of division three claimed only their second victory of the season when both Carl Nesbitt and Remi Horder found the target to inflict a 2-1 defeat over an inform Bingham Town Reserves for whom Sean Longford replied. Bottom side Sporting Inkfish gained a good point against mid table PMR in a rare Sunday morning 0-0 draw. M.I.S United continued their fine form with a comfortable 5-0 win over Taverners. The first goal came as early as the second minute when Joe Thompson won the ball to set Aidan Talmey free who proceeded to put through Adam Rowley for 1-0. Provider Soon after Talmey turned poacher when he put away a Joe Thompson assist for 2-0. Luke Chamberlain made it 3-0 just after the restart by scoring direct from a free kick which was 5 yards inside his own half. Aidan Talmey then scored his second and Space's 4th by capitalising on a defensive error before Luke Malytycz netted his first of the season to complete the rout. Bestwood Re-United kept up their 100% record thanks mainly to Chris Atkins who scored 4 times as they also won 5-0 at La Toque to remain above The Mill and Chaffoteaux who also scored five goals each in their respective 5-4 and 5-2 wins over Arnold Victory Club and FC Samba.Report by Jeff Johnson

Olympic made all the changes in extra time bringing on Ian Norris their Assistant Manager who was certainly carrying some excess baggage through customs! With four minutes left Lee Potts coolly converted a match winning penalty to beat Punjab cup hopes. Report by Adrian Ford

EMPAL - BRINSTHORPE RANGERS FIND IT TOUGH AGAINST BOTTOM SIDE FREEMAN & MITCHELL! It was a full fixture list this Sunday in the Empal involving County Cup, Empal Cup and League matches courtesy of the spring temperatures across the County. Division One Brinsthorpe Rangers extend their leads at the top of Division one following a hard fought 3-1 win over bottom side Freeman & Mitchell. Two late goals from Matt Barratt and Ed Day snatched the points from Freemans. Total Reclaims Demolition crashed 5-1 to Linford Nelson severely denting their chanpionship hopes as a result. Struggling University outfit Nottingham Medics pulled off the shock result of the day beating Burton Joyce 3-2. Despite arriving close to kick off Medics got off to a flier as Eamonn Shearin bundled his way past the defence after only three minutes to poke home the first goal. Joyce responded and after a speedy run to the by-line and pull back Keith Bailey had a simple tap in to equalise for Joyce. Despite not firing on all cylinders and by-passing midfield Joyce created several gilt edged opportunities with Ben Allison the main culprit scooping over from 6 yards and then forcing a great save from the imposing keeper Tschobotko in a one on one situation. One all at half time and Joyce needing the win pressed forward and were caught on the break as Chris Bosshart slammed home. Again Joyce went back up the other end and after a succession of corners top scorer Ben Allison redeemed himself with a typical near post glancing header. A draw would probably been a fair result but Medics who before today had won one only league match stormed forward and won a free kick about twentyeight yards out. The two man wall certainly didn't expect the rocket from Aaron Hodgson that fairly exploded into the top corner beating keeper Stevensons' valiant efforts to deflect away. Despite concerted Joyce pressure in final minutes Medics hung on and the recriminations started in the Joyce camp! Notts Athletic drew 1-1 with West End probably putting an end to Ends' title aspirations despite having several game in hand on the clubs above them.Adam Betts the scorer for Notts. Divison Two No stopping Arnold Cross Keys beating rivals Wheelhouse twice in a week – this week 2-0 to send themselves six points clear at the top of Division Two. Ryan King and Barry Paine the regular scorers. Match of the day saw Ardley Athletic overcome their main challengers Fox & Crown 4-3.Ardley took an early lead against the run of play by Sean Evans. Crown then imposed their regal dominance and rattled in three goals without reply to lead 3-1. Athletic then reversed the match as John Cross netted his second in two games, James McGaw with a superb long range lob and then new signing Sean Evans got his second and winning goal –his fourth in three matches. Ardley go third replacing Crown as a result. Burton Joyce B beat Inn the Bank 3-0 with strikes from Pinder, Moon and Easom. Highfield Park Rangers went two up against Trent Allstars but Richard Gibson and Chris Townsend clawed their side back to share the points at 2-2. Top scoring draw of the day saw Butler Benfica draw 3-3 with Riverside Moores in the relegation cruncher. Paul Stephenson, Gary Smith and Martin Laver for Benfica and Daniel Bell, Daniel Thomas and Robert Poku for Moores. Division Three Wollaton Pirates made it ten wins out of ten to go second behind leaders Punjab Colts with games in hand after beating Clifton Dynamo 2-1.Ace strikers Frankie Labbate and Paolo Piliero combined to give Piliero a simple tap in early doors. Injuries effected both sides in the first half requiring substitutions especially pirates who lost Alex Doyle to head stitches and Andrew Rigby to the curious football injury known to all as a groin strain. Early in the second half Anthony Fragola smashed home a free kick to make it 2-0.To their great credit Dynamo went for the game and deservedly pulled one back through Humphries who calmly beat the offside trap to slot home. Pirates for once this season were stretched to the end and hung onto their 100% record. Pirates are now in the County Minor Cup semi final and Empal Quarter Final plus are favourites for the League title – a treble beckons! Radcliffe Olympic Reserves narrowed the gap on the leaders away on Cup action by beating Plumtree 4-0 to go third on goal difference. Kinoulton Villa are off the pace but a 2-1 win over Beeston Athletic keeps them competing at the higher end of the table. Frame scored Villas goals

NOTTS SUNDAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE - CUP SHOCK AS CLUMBER BEAT SCOTSMAN & CLIFTON VILLA DEFEAT SCOTS GREY! Once again the headliners of the weekend are Scots Grey who deservedly won a place in the semi-final of the Carlsberg FA National Sunday Cup at the expense of visitors; Bromley based Heywood Irish Centre. The hosts got off to the best possible start, as Terry Hawkridge fired them ahead after only two minutes. However, Scots knew they were not going to get an easy ride as Heywood hauled themselves level sixteen minutes later thanks to a converted penalty. Not to be denied, a stunning strike from Alan Jefferies following good support work from Andy Frawley restored Scots' advantage. After the break the visitors stepped up the pace and with 15 minutes remaining were awarded a penalty that they contrived to fire over the bar. Buoyed by this reprieve, Greys raced to the other end, where debutant striker; Phil Bignal fired home following a cleverly worked free kick, ensuring their safe passage through. In the Premier Division, emerging Trentside moved into second spot after a last minute goal from leading scorer; Nathan Francis gave them a 3-2 victory at Radford Park Rangers. It appeared that the visitors were coasting to an easy win as Nathan and Tyrone Francis gave them a two goal lead. However, Radford showed great spirit and levelled matters through Lee Taylor and Ricky Leverton before falling to the late strike. Redhill relinquished the runners-up spot as they fell at Clumber. The homeside raced into a 5-1 through efforts from Carl Westcarr(2), Jared Westcarr, Jason Barrett and Wes Burke, as Anthony Gregory relied. However, Redhill got a 'second wind' and two further goals from Gregory and one from Nathan Ryan left Clumber hanging on at the end. Plough Barfly's had fallen from grace recently but bounced back in dramatic fashion by thrashing Nuthall 7-0 with Ben Hancock netting a hat trick, supported by two from Ricky Hodgson and one each from Simon Marlow and Ben Ashworth. The yo-yo effect continued at the head of Division One, as Chesterfield Arms took full advantage of previous leaders dropping points to take over at the top after goals from Carl Wilson(2), Jamie Moore, Marik Vipond and Ross McCoughie gave the a 5-2 victory at Carlton Catholic, who had Darren Oldham responding with a couple of strikes. Former leaders; Trowsers and Rolls Royce Leisure Sunday fought out a soulless, goalless draw, whilst fourth placed; Stratford Haven also shared the points and four goals with mid-table Clifton Centrals. Pat Sneath scored two and missed one penalty for Centrals, the last successful one coming final minute after Jack Joseph and Mark Scott had given the visitors the lead. BTSC had Anthony Atkinson, Danny Dennis and Josh Parker on target as they lifted themselves off the bottom with a 3-2 win at George Street, for whom Jason Lewis and Danny Humphries registered.

Non-League Football! Notts County Report continued from page 4 and with room to shoot outside the box the striker intelligently saw enough room between Pilkington and the goal to lift a delicate chip perfectly over the goalkeeper's outstretched arm and into the back of the net. It was a piece of brilliance from Bishop, but without a doubt Notts should have had a free-kick after Sodje's arms were all around Weston. No real further action followed and Notts went in at the break, harshly, a goal down. The second half started promisingly for County although there was a moment of worry at the back a low cross from the left by Bennett fizzed across the six-yard box with Bishop and Morrell lurking with intent. A good run by Weston created an opening for Facey six minutes into the half at the far post but his header was cleared off the line by a Bury defender and somehow cleared their lines. Notts made their first change on sixty-seven minutes by introducing leading scorer Jamie Forrester into the action in place of Matt Hamshaw who looked to have been carrying a knock. That meant Forrester joined Facey in attack, Weston moved to the right wing and Forte to the right. Gavin Strachan quickly followed in place of Richard Butcher after putting in a hardworking shift in midfield after his long-awaited first start since being injured in November. Chances were limited throughout as Notts battled away, although ten minutes from time Jones curled an effort just wide for Bury. Six minutes from time Bury secured their victory through defender Efe Sodje, who stabbed the ball home following a goalmouth scramble after a Notts defender had cleared Dawson's effort off the line. Sodje however made no mistake from a few yards out to secure the win. A Clapham free-kick was blocked late on for Notts, who never through the towel in. It was the start of a tough run of fixtures for County, and although it ended in defeat Ian McParland will have been able to draw plenty out of this game as his side prepare to tackle Bradford City at Meadow Lane next Saturday. With three wins from their last four at Meadow Lane, there's every reason to look forward to the visit of the Bantams.

NON-LEAGUE REPORTS Oxford 1 Mansfield Town 0 There was never much to separate these two old Football League friends, and Stags had more than enough chance to get themselves on the scoresheet. And it was the Stags who tested home goalkeeper Billy Turley for the first time on seven minutes.Louis Briscoe won a free kick 25 yards from goal, but the resulting free kick from Nathan Arnold was easily saved. Moments later, Rob Duffy, returning to the Kassam Stadium where he was once so prolific, struck goalwards but his effort was off target. Oxford registered their first attempt on goal in the tenth minute. U's striker James Constable wriggled his way past Scott Garner and Paul Mayo, but was thwarted by a superb stop from Alan Marriott, who stood large in the Stags goal. Mansfield then won their second corner on 23 minutes following good work down the right by Gary Silk, but the flag kick came to nothing. Silk was then involved in a neat move two minutes later.Following a one two with Arnold on the edge of the box, Silk almost got hold of the ball inside the area,

but Chris Carruthers stopped him in his tracks with a last ditch tackle. A minute later, captain Jonathan D'Laryea forced a save from Billy Turley as Stags continued to apply the early pressure. Louis Briscoe who appeared injured, was then replaced by Aaron O'Connor on 28 minutes. O'Connor wasted no time in settling into the match with a shot at goal. But it was a routine stop from Oxford's Turley. Stags' best chance of the half came on 32. Turley was required to make a point blank save from a Curtis Woodhouse header following good play on the right flank. Six minutes from the end of the first half, Oxford built up slowly down the right, and the move ended with Lee Chapman shooting over from inside the area. In the final stages of the first period, James Constable tried to beat Marriott from outside the area, and at the other end Paul Mayo tried his luck following a good run, cutting in from the left. In the last minute of the half, Craig Nelthorpe rounded off the chances with the best of the lot - striking the bar from the left hand side of the area. Two minutes into the second period, Billy Turley was sent down to his right, having to stop a Nathan Arnold strike from outside the area, after a neat one-two with Aaron O'Connor. A minute later, Craig Farrell, with all the time in the world, blazed a shot over from 15 yards, following a move on the wing. On 56, the league's player of the month Scott Garner had to be alert after a dangerous whipping cross from Nelthorpe on the left. The young defender intervened to clear the danger when a goalscoring chance may have prevailed. Home goalie Turley, who had been in the thick of the action in the first half, was called upon again to deny Arnold from inside the area. The home side broke the deadlock on the hour. It was a break away from the U's, started by livewire James Constable. He turned Stags' last defender to break down the right, and he laid the ball off to the advancing Nelthorpe who was left with a simple finish into the roof of the net to score his first goal for the club in the process. Straight after the goal, Michael Blackwood came on for Curtis Woodhouse. Ten minutes later Craig Farrell, who looked clearly offside, was left one on one with Alan Marriott, but Marriott came quickly off his line to make the stop. A similar chance presented itself for Stags on 72. O'Connor timed his run well to get past the defence, but Turley raced out to block the shot. The home side had to withstand another Stags' chance. Firstly, Arnold mis fired a shot and then O'Connor followed up with an effort, which eventually came to nothing. Manager David Holdsworth made his final change 15 minutes from the end. Neil MacKenzie replacing Rob Duffy as Stags seemingly changed to a 4-31-2 formation. On 82, Alan Marriott, who had again been impeccable all afternoon, was relied on to make a fingertip save on to the post from a Luke Foster header following a corner. In the 90th minute, Neil MacKenzie fired goalwards to try and register a goal which never came. Hednesford Town 0 Eastwood Town 1 Backed by a large and vociferous following, there was a good chance for the Badgers within seconds of the kick off, when goalkeeper Danny Woodhall's poor clearance fell at the feet of Ross Gardner who tried to play Ian Holmes through on goal but Danny Harvey slide in to avert the danger. Sean Platt the Hednesford right back was given too

Call Office 0115 8405530 Mobile 07967 305281 Common Lane, Hucknall much time from a throw to deliver a good cross but Mark Hume was alert to the danger. Russell Cooke did well to stop Matt Lewis from getting a shot on goal as both teams were struggling to cope with the poor surface. A Richard Dunning free kick into the Hednesford box caused problems, Lindon Meikle's snap shot cannoning off Tom Marshall for the Badgers first corner, however Hume's header sailed harmlessly wide. Ross Gardner fired wide from outside the box,and moments later Cooke almost put the Badgers ahead. Gardner's fine run and cross field pass found Meikle and Alex Cowley was only too please to concede the corner. With Hednesford's big men watching Paul Robinson and Mark Hume, Cooke ghosted in and rattled the bar with a brilliant header. Andy Todd was unlucky not to get onto an Alistair Asher cross but the game was becoming fought out in midfield with the defences generally on top. The Hednesford fans on the far side thought they had scored the one time the Eastwood defence were caught napping. A quick throw to Matt Lewis was pulled back from the by-line, the industrious Elliott Durrell fired a shot straight into the body of Anton Foster which ricocheted to former Eastwood target Ross Dyer who smashed the ball into the side netting from outside the box. Hednesford's Florent Raimy was red carded for a two footed challenge on Anton Foster in a scene reminiscent to the disallowed Ronaldo goal at Derby. The referee waved play on and as soon at the play broke down he brought it back and carded the Romainian much to the dismay of the Hednesford fans. Rapinder Gill did well to deny Lindon Meikle a run on goal as the Badgers looked to capitalise on their numerical advantage. Asher and Gardner combined well and Holmes did brilliantly to chest down, swivel and fire in a shot that Woodhall did well to take for the final action of the half. Todd robbed Cowley and played in Holmes to shoot wide in the opening moments of the second half and Meikle's shot a minute later was a nice height for the keeper to save. The Badgers most expensive signings Danny Holland was introduced to the action earlier than anticipated with the withdrawal of Ross Gardner with a swollen ankle. Dunning played a long ball out to Anton Foster on the wing. He rolled the ball back to Russell Cooke to measure his cross however it evaded everyone except Rapinder Gill who applied the deftest of touches to deceive Danny Woodhall in the Hednesford goal. Elliott Durrell fired over the bar after a good run, and Redmond caught a dangerous Bennett cross as Hednesford started to see a bit more of the ball. Ross Draper looked like he might profit from a Dunning slip but Hume produced a match winning tackle to deny him. Durrell was seeing a lot of the ball by now and he tested Redmond with a shot from outside the box but Redmond was equal to it. The Badgers were denied a second goal when Holmes produced a superb shot across goal which Woodhall did well to save. Holland was onto the loose ball in a flash and drove home from just outside the six yard box however the linesman raised his flag presumably for offside, however with Holland latching onto a save it seemed a poor decision. Meikle dummied Marshall out on the touchline, cut inside and drove the ball for the top corner that Woodhall did well to tip over as the Badgers pressed for a second. The Badgers had a good penalty shout turned down when Todd's cross hit Harvey. Holmes was adjudged to be offside despite making his run onto Foster's through ball from his own half after Foster robbed Durrell, with all the Hednesford players committed in attack. One couldn't help wondering if the officials were looking to atone for the earlier sending off, and this feeling was compounded after a second goal was chalked off. Dunning played Holland in on goal and Woodhall made a superb save, the ball bouncing out to Dunning who tried a cross to the far post, however this time Woodhall made a harsh of his catch, falling backwards and spilling the ball into the net. So the three points went to the Badgers putting them three points clear of new second placed team Nantwich Town. Hednesford fall to third and face a tricky game at home to Ilkeston on Tuesday night when they play their game in hand on Nantwich.

A woman was shopping at her local supermarket where she selected: 2 litres of low fat milk, a carton of eggs, 2 litres of orange juice, a head of lettuce, half a dozen tomatoes, a 500g jar of coffee, a 250g pack of bacon As she was unloading her items on the conveyor belt to check out, a drunk standing behind her watched as she placed the items in front of the cashier. While the cashier was ringing up her purchases, the drunk calmly stated, 'You must be single.' The woman was a bit startled by this proclamation, but she was intrigued by the derelict's intuition, since she was indeed single. She looked at her six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about her selection that could have tipped off the drunk to her marital status. Curiosity getting the better of her, she said, 'Well, you know what, you're absolutely correct. Cherry Tree 4-8 Park Tavern A Premier 1 With an outside chance to go 3rd beckoning Ponda-Rileys Spot On One P-P Masters hammered Spot On Sneinton 11-1 (Mason, Chad). Greg & Notts Open Pool League Prem 2 Lee of the Mason Brothers; both snatched victory from the Park Tav Langham 5-7 Friar Tuck jaws of defeat to set Ponda-Rileys up for their record win. The Sun Valley 4-8 Sherwood SC elusive white-wash was cruelly scuppered by Justin Marsden Gregory Greyhound and Martin Maltby against 'Chad' and 'Mase.' Despite Talismen Andy Leese (Xmas do?) and Matt Tugby (Uni Pool Notts Open Pool League Prem 3 champ's) being absent the Rileys lads put their neighbours to Crusader 6-6 Beacon the sword. The match was done and dusted by 10.15; as news Carlton Cath Club 6-6 Basford Hall filtered through that Cherry Tree were preparing to play Hubble Bar 9-3 Lady Bay Nottm Deaf 'Boring' Blackshaw in the final stages against the Tavern, all hope of a third place confirmation for Ponda-Rileys was lost at Grey Nightmares 6-6 Sun Valley Ladies the very least until the early hours! Stepping back in time to City Leisure Pool League 8pm and over to the opposite side of the City, Park Tav 'A' TC Headstock 6-2 Moulders travelled to Calvo to take on the re-vitalised Cherry Tree. The top of the bill clash of the tight 'uns between Spot On One and Masters had to be postponed until Gladstone 2-6 Spot On March 2 because each side had a player away on England Games played Monday 16th February duty. Thanks again to Gary Sherwood and for his input to Basford Hall M.W 5-3 Bruno this report, though surprisingly Trev didn't volunteer a report Spot On 4-5 The Masters this week from the Cherry angle. Premier 2 New Station Rd S.C 5-0 Marquis of Lorne Gregory v Greyhound didn't post their result in time for a ASSOCIATION PLATE QUARTER-FINALS report, but that makes the league for now look very close after Friar Tuck narrowly secured a win away to challengers Park Gregory 3-5 Major J'Oakers Tavern Langham. Sherwood Social Club also joined the pack Castle 3-5 Robin Hood of 4 at the top with a solid win away to Sun Valley. Sun Valley L.M.R.C.A Rockets 3-5 Porchester Arms looked out of this one at 1-4 down but a doubles win then victories by Gordon Carnell and Pete Sims levelled the match Carlton Charlie's 5-3 Grey Goose at 4-4. Sherwood then raised their game with a doubles win MONDAY - EPA DIVISION 1 followed by D.Ahern, A.French and a captains performance by Colin French secured the match 4-8. BEESTON, CHILWELL & WEST NOTTS POOL LEAGUE COMMICS CLINGING ON TO TOP SPOT! Singles quarter finals were played on Wednesday 18th with Richard Bloomfield and Martin Coyle, who cleared with an 8 ball game, both winning their matches and now face each other in the semi finals in the best of five legs at the Inham Nook, Chilwell on Weds 11th March. Likewise in the other quarters both Darren Lowe and Dean Nixon won and now face each other on the same date at the Star, Beeston. All matches commence at 8:30pm, so pop along and watch some brilliant pool matches. Commics are still clinging at the top on legs as they take another close 4-3 match against the Robin Hoods however their position is still very much under threat from Victory Club B as they hammer the Chequers into a 5-2 defeat and slowly start to close that leg difference. But

The No-Nonsense John Smith’s Sports Quiz?

with five matches left the threat isn't just narrowed to the top two as both Victory Club A and Jolly secure wins this week and are determined to chase those top two slots. Vic Club A totally whitewashed the Chequers all stars 7-0 and really increased their chances at the top with a staggering increase to their leg difference. Jolly have a game advantage and face Vic A next match in what could decide the fate between these two titans. Losses from both division B's Jag and Cricks A leave the Hillside with a chance of snatching the rug from under the league leaders as the took out Cricks A 4-3. With only two matches to go the crucial face off comes next match as the Jag, on home slate, take on the Cricks A in a vital promotion zone decider. What an incredible turnaround yet again in division C as all the top three league leaders loose in situations that could very easily alter the promotion zone. Biggest defeat was the Riverside who went heavily down to the Red Cow who actually secured there second match victory of the season with a 6-1 win, well done guys. However all is not lost as, with only two matches to play, both Nook and Pelican are still sitting tight at the top. Or are they? More next week. CALVERON & ARNOLD DISTRICT POOL LEAGUE - NEW SEASON PREDICTIONS BEGIN! The new season starts on Tuesday 24th February with fourteen teams in two divisions, all chasing the ultimate dream of Calverton & Arnold Pool glory. Here we take a look at the respective teams and their chances of success. Division One Balfour Club – Alan Gregory has handed over the leadership reigns of the newly promoted team to Glen Dyer probably more in fear of the stiff task that faces the Arnold minnows this season. They have managed to add numbers to their squad and can now boast nearly as many players as Harvey the Hamster in his heyday, however only time will tell whether they have added the necessary quality. Odds 25/1. Cherry Tree A – The Calverton boys go into the season as second favourites but whilst they clearly have some quality within their ranks, they often flatter to deceive, having never won the league title in it's thirty year history. Many respected pundits have recently called for a change in leadership after yet another potless season and they may well get their way if OJ Taylor again fails to bring home silverware this term. Odds 9/2.

Ex Service Club – The Arnold veterans have now moved into the 20th century with a new, well new to them, normal sized table. The £120 outlay is bound to be money well spent, if not for them, certainly for opposition players such as Tosh, who will now be able to play some of his shots without the aid of the rest. Odds 20/1 Railway Volunteers – After a disappointing fourth place finish last term, Tantric Trev has been busy in the close season transfer market and new signings such as Crazy Mayes, Martin Lovenest and Kurdish Bradley and the recall from a season-long loan at the Cherry Tree A for Wayne Mayes, surely installs the Lowdham outfit as the dark horses for the season. Odds 5/1. Spot On B – Tony McDonald's Hucknall boys are overwhelming favourites for the title after finishing runners up in the two previous seasons and adding the class of trainee celebrity coiffurist and England Junior captain, Donut Radford to their ranks. With the likes of Calverton & Arnold Interleague stars, Dave Wainwright, Danny Butler, Simon Thompson and Loz Sanderson also at his disposal, Mac The Knife will surely expect to see his team go undefeated all season. Odds 11/10. The Eagle – The relegated Arnold outfit gained a last minute reprieve to remain in the highest echelons of Tuesday pool and will hope to end their record breaking losing run at the earliest opportunity. They have strengthened in pre season after offering multi pound contracts to anyone willing to sign them but their retained players will have to significantly improve this season if they are to avoid what must be an inevitable relegation spot. Odds 100/1. Victory Club – Chris Winson's draw specialists will have to turn some of those results into wins if they are to challenge the big boys and harbour any hopes of a trophy come the

end of the season. With the likes of Miss'em Lewis, Janet Street-Porter, Rileys Col and veteran hard man, Kev Lane in the team they will always prove difficult to beat and should be safe from relegation if nothing else. Odds 16/1. Division Two Arnold Labour Club – New to the league but have some respected and experienced players in their line up which probably sees them as one of the favourites for promotion. Odds 5/1. British Royal Oak – A new team, who apparently fancy their chances. Time will tell but definite dark horses Odds 8/1. Calverton Miners Welfare – The Top Club finished bottom last year and will probably struggle to beat that by much this season. Odds 33/1. Carlton Liberal Club – Big Sam's team have strengthened their ranks this season with County Junior captain, Demi Barber, joining on a free transfer. They could produce the odd shock but may not have quite enough. Odds 25/1. Cherry Tree B – Phil Elliott's perennial yo-yo team look a little thin on the ground this season after losing the Asbo Kid to their A team but experience is key and they will be there or there abouts at the end of the season if they can regularly field a full side. Odds 15/2. Major Oak – Harry's girls just missed out on promotion last season and will obviously be in the mix again this term. Dale Nix and Claire Moore will lead from the front. Odds 13/2. The Longbow – Taff and Norm have swooped to add ex England over 60's player, Graham Rawson to their squad. The Arnold crew may challenge if they can become more consistent and turn narrow defeats into wins. Odds 12/1. Report by Trevor Chambers

DIVISION 1 BCI 'A' move to the top of division 1 after beating BCI 'E' 4-1. Jason Bettridge started the winning run for BCI 'A' with a 70-43 win over Kwok Yip. However Kwok's brother Wong Yip pulled a frame back for BCI 'E' by beating Tony Collins 57-40. Steve Coleman then made the comeback of the night by beating Jon Mason 50-49, after being 45 points down at one stage. Hanson Stowe made sure of the win by beating Sam Haugh 65-40. Arnold Civil Defence “A”, holding them to a 4-4 draw. At Stadium, Barry Stark had a run of 40 in his 77-1 annihilation of Gary Spencer. Chris Winter didn't miss much as he beat Matt Ellis 57-4. Clary Plowman pushed James Notman all the way with Notman winning on the black 43-30. Stark and Ross Wilkin played out a strange pairs frame against Spencer and Notman, with the pink becoming surrounded by reds near the top pocket. After many safety exchanges Wilkin put the frame beyond doubt with a 13 break to seal a 68-36 win. At Arnold, Danny Di Folco only just lost a tight frame against John Fountain. Bob Walker made a 39 break in his frame against Malc Belshaw to open up what seemed like an unassailable lead. However a couple of fluked snookers by Belshaw and also some good potting brought him right back into the frame. Belshaw doubled the pink and then potted the black to seal an amazing comeback. Steve Butler and Brian Kinton played out a scrappy frame which Butler won on the black. This meant that the Stadium pairing of Di Folco and Walker had to win the final frame to tie the match. Their opponents Belshaw and Richard Tooley struggled and the Stadium pair opened up a decent lead going into the colours. Di Folco was the hero for Stadium as he potted a terrific blue and a simple pink to win the frame. Arnold's draw gave their title rivals a chance to make up valuable ground and BCI Snooker Centre “A” did just that with a no-nonsense 6-2 defeat of Arnold Civil Defence “B”. Darts BEESTON, CHILWELL & DIST. DARTS - BOAT & HORSES TAKE TOP SPOT IN THE LADIES! LADIES: In what can only be described as the most incredible downturn of the season The Birchover glitch their chances of clinching the title for definite, and now face a battle for the title, after losing dismally 5-2, on home ground' to the superior play of their closest rivals Boat & Horses. (Incidentally reminding me that Stacy Burton hit a 180 max the other week too, well done gal) Despite the Birchover being a game in hand the Boat & Horses still take the top slot on leg difference. Chequers take advantage of the Pelican's BYE week and move up to third place after yet another victory on their climb back up the table, this time with a 5-2 against Jaguar. The Chequers are at home next week to Birchover and are looking to penalise the top team and take the advantage to move up. This second loss on the trot for Birchover should be a sharp warning to the top teams, it's a quicker way down than it is up. Another quick mention to the Hop Pole who have once again found their mark at the Oche with Jessica Wing hitting a 140 and Helen Bilbie a 160 on their way to lifting yet another win for the team, well played Gals. MEN'S: Division A's Charlton Arms are really turning the heat up as they cut a swathing attack through the league in a

tremendous fight back up the table having beaten Pelican three weeks ago and last week totally decimated Queens and this week was the turn of the Boat to be sunk 6-3 as this team really gets it act together at last. Although they've left it too late to take top or runners up the way this side is tearing into the top tier of the league is really showing the true grit of darts and, incidentally, taking them way out of the relegation zone. Boat & Horses hang on to the top slot this week but they too face the might of the Charlton in two weeks time. Birchover go up to third on the back of the Boats' demise by beating Pelican 7-2. Division B's Nook lose out to the Fezz in a close 5-4 defeat leaving Chequers in with a more than even chance being a game in hand over the Nook, despite Chequers loss to Boat & Horses B. Chequers big chance comes on their next match as Nook take their BYE week. Nottingham Uni lads finally pulled off their first win of the season and what a way to do it, with an 8-1 victory over the Nags, well done guys.

NOTTINGHAM CENTRAL DARTS - PRIDE OF ERIN DEFEAT CLIFTON BRIDGE INN IN CLOSE ENCOUNTER! LADIES: A face off between the top two teams in the league at the moment saw the Pride come out victorious with a very close, down to the wire, 4-3 victory over Clifton Bridge leaving the Ponda gals planted into second place. Cambridge too

secured a close 4-3 win over Beacon to retain third slot. With six games to go its still looking tight at the front with plenty of on comers looking at a crack at the championship title, which just shows the grit and talent of Central league gals as they sportingly push their way upwards. Division B's Park Tavern are still creeping away from the opposition to secure their top slot with a 5-1 win over Gladstone despite both teams being a player short enforcing the loss of a leg point each. However they still have to watch their backs as Nuthall are starting to sharpen their darts and their playing eye as they too took a fantastic 7-0 win from the Earl Howe. As the Nuthall square off to the Park at the end of March they will be looking to win everything between now and then. Wow, what a climax looming towards the finale of a brilliant seasn MIXED: Cambridge cling to their four point advantage after a close 4-3 game against the Goose last week but Nuthall b and Madhouse are still stoking the fires after also taking wins with Nuthall pulling up their leg average in a brilliant 6-1 victory over Headstocks. Cambridge and Nuthall need to keep their sights clear with only two matches left and it looks to be an exciting finale as Nuthall and Madhouse face each other in the last match of the season. If both win next week it will be one heck of a showdown to look forward to. However, division B tells a different story as, with four matches to go, the top three all had wins this week and show no sign of giving

any leeway to each other. Catchems are also vying for runners up slot and none of these teams will be showing any mercy as the battle finale commences with both Catchems and Querneby still having to face General, who incidentally have the upper advantage of being a game in hand. MEN'S: A depleted side nearly cost Queens dearly this week as Clifton Welfare came close at just losing out 5-3 then Queens ended up giving away the last leg having no more players. A far cry from last week when Gary Britten of Queens hit his form with a fourteen darter starting with the max 180, 60, 80, 97 and finishing on 84 to win the match. Beechdale however succumbed to the superior play of Park Tavern as a close contested match saw Park win 5-4 which is a huge advantage to Top Valley who, after a brilliant 6-3 victory, edge that Division A Boat & Horses A Queens Birchover SSC Boat (Lenton) Charlton Arms Jaguar Wollaton SC Pelican

much closer to the title slot. With only five or six matches left the runners' up slot is so close that its still anybody's chance at the title so far. But are the Queens going to falter? We'll find out more next week. Div B tells a different Story with Birchover sent crashing away from Joint top as they crashed out with a wicked 6-3 defeat from the superior play of White Lion. Man of the match this week has to be Brian Woodhall of Birchover who managed to take down the 'Mighty' John Smith in what was John's first defeat of the season, well played Brian. Madhouse took hold of the open invite with a good 6-3 win against Horse & Jockey and gladly jumped into third place still leaving a close battle between these three for the promotion zone and the title. Marc Levers scored the only goal of the first period putting away his own rebound on the powerplay but sloppy play allowed Vipers to score two unanswered second period goals to take the lead. A change of game plan, a shortening of the bench and four goals with no reply sealed the points in an excellent third period from the home side. Mark Richardson equalised early doors in the last period on the powerplay, Jade Galbraith shelved the go-ahead goal in the 52nd minute, Johan Molin blasted home on the powerplay to double the lead and the best was saved until last when a threeon-one break out saw a cheeky fake by Kevin Bergin to set up Brendan Cook at 55.30. Coach Corey Neilson praised the versatility of his squad afterwards saying: "We've got guys who can adjust both in the positions I ask them to play and in the way we ask them to play. Bedford Blues 23 Nottingham 16 give the visitors the lead in the first minute with a penalty attempt just outside the Blues 22 but the fly-half fluffed his kick in splendid style. That said Nottingham went straight on the attack and by the eighth minute they scored the games' first try. A Blues lineout was stolen and

Not so much joy for Nottingham this week! Trailing 16-3 at the break the Blues touched down three times to secure the win and put a bit of distance between them and their opponents in the league table. In the last five minutes I was thinking 'God, we're going to be on the end of a close win for once'," said double try scorer Bill Twelvetrees after the game. They scored through a missed tackle and a knock-on by one of our boys but we knew we could still come back into it. "We came out in the second half, kept hold of the ball and put the pressure on them. We showed what we've been doing all year by getting quick ball and using it. The forwards were awesome and it was a great second half. “We've got some tough games but we are a part-time side and we are easily up there with the big teams in this league. We'll now look forward to the final seven games of the season." Early on it seemed that it wasn't going to be a very happy afternoon for the Blues as Nottingham looked to dominate possession and territory from the start. Tim Taylor had the chance to

Taylor put up a high-hanging kick which Bedford simply didn't deal with. The ball was recycled to Northampton loanee Neil Starling who brushed aside challenges before offloading to David Jackson who touched down but Taylor couldn't convert. Taylor finally found his kicking boots in the 11th minute with a well struck penalty after James Pritchard killed the ball. Twelvetrees had a chance to get the Blues on the score sheet but his penalty effort from 35 metres didn't have the direction. That miss then led to Nottingham extending their lead as they made their way down the slope into Bedford's 22. A scrum went Nottingham's way and their powerful forwards saw the ball over with Danny Montagu getting the try but Taylor couldn't convert. Another Nottingham penalty was converted by Taylor but in the final seconds Luke Sheriff was sin-binned for killing the ball and James Pritchard converted the three points. Bedford came flying out of the blocks in the second half and scored two lovely tries. Twelvetrees crossed the whitewash three minutes in when he linked up well with James Cannon and Brendan Burke following excellent rucking from Phil Boulton, Marco Cecere, Dan Richmond and Samoan bulldozer Paul Tupai. Five minutes later Harries deservedly got on the scoresheet after the pack turned over a Nottingham ruck and Dickson went on a dazzling run before feeding the ball up the line through Vass and Twelvetrees to the young Welshman. Neither try was converted but it was game on at 13-16. Bedford continued to keep Nottingham at bay and Twelvetrees levelled the scores with a 73rd minute penalty which he walloped through the uprights. Bedford had momentum and looked for the winning score which came on the stroke of full time and it was Twelvetrees who scored it. Bedford's pack were awesome recycling the ball deep in Nottingham's 22 and Nick Walshe directed traffic perfectly. Mouritz Botha, Ben Pienaar, Sam Walsh and Gregor Gillanders all came close, but as a ruck formed close to the posts, it was Twelvetrees who dived over before converting.
