This win is exactly what Forest needed after the Derby disaster. There is now a light at the end of the tunnel once more. It is suddenly less difficult to believe that Davies can plot a course to safety. But the points did not come easily. Forest were hammered and pillaged for the opening 30 minutes. Reading strode forward in waves, savaging Forest from the wings and battering into the box. They are an imperious outfit, loaded with physical power and a more than adequate seasoning of top quality players. For a long time the sides looked a division apart. The wing-backs, for all of their sweat and tears, had a torrid time of keeping crosses out of the box. Smith made a fairly woeful fist of sweeping up the clutter. At one point Smith was quarrelling with all four defenders, each of them arriving with a separate complaint for him to field. At the same time Reading were taking a short corner with no Forest players watching. The first Reading goal did not seem too far away. But it didn't come, and instead the restlessness of the crowd – and indeed the Reading side – gave Forest a lifeline. By the end of the first half Forest looked a lot more settled, and the second half swung in their favour. By no means did Forest dominate, but there was a dramatic improvement. The travelling

Notts County made it four wins from five at Meadow Lane with a 3-1 victory over promotion hopefuls Bradford City this afternoon. A brace from Jonathan Forte and a close-range finish from Delroy Facey had Notts in dreamland and 3-0 up at the break - with County displaying finishing of the highest order. Peter Thorne pulled a goal back late on for City but that wasn't going to spoil the Magpies' party. Manager Ian McParland handed starts to Jamie Forrester, Adam Tann and Adam Nowland for the visit of the Bantams, replacing Richard Butcher, the ill Phil Picken and the injured Matt Hamshaw from the 2-0 reverse at Bury seven days ago. It meant Forte was shifted out wide to replace Hamshaw, while Forrester slotted back in the side alongside Facey in attack after a short absence with a toe injury. Picken phoned in early this morning with a sickness bug which meant a first start for Tann since recovering from a four-month lay-off with a knee

fans behind the goal could sense an upset. Reading were throwing men forward in search of a win, and the space they left behind them facilitated some of the best football Forest have played all season. It wasn't Brazilian splendour, but it was simple, functional football involving forward runs in the middle and common sense balls into the channel. The addition of Guy Moussi's exemplary passing should not be underestimated. McGugan's opener relied on a moment of solo brilliance. He weaved through the defence and aimed a scuffed shot for the corner of the goal – beating the keeper and setting up a nervous half-an-hour. It was rough, tense and – at times – extremely nervy. But this was not Reading's day, and five minutes of unwarranted stoppage time was not enough to change the outcome. It may, however, have shaved a century off the collective life expectancy of travelling fans. I'm delighted to have taken 3 points from Reading, whose £8 car parks and £2 tea bags will have soured more than one Saturday afternoon this season. Match ratings: Smith – 5 – no problems in the second half, but he had some shocking moments in the first. Chambers – 6 – struggled at times, as he often does, but he looks fitter, leaner and a lot more comfortable at the moment. Wilson – 6.5 – reasonably solid performance. Morgan – 8 – frequently held together a collapsing defence in the first half. There is no doubt in my mind that he should keep that armband. Lynch – 6 – probably his strongest display in a Forest shirt. Not perfect, but better. Anderson – 7 – caused them a lot of problems by breaking forward with pace. McGugan – 7– he was excellent, but only in patches. Moussi – 7.5 – looked tired at times, but his sensibly-crafted passes bought priceless space and time. Cohen – 7.5 – the usual tireless display, coupled with some excellent passing. Earnshaw – 6.5 – spent most of the afternoon staring into Duberry's midriff, but he made a nuisance of himself. Tyson – 6 – not in the game and injured early. Subs: McCleary – 8 – excellent performance from the bench. Report by Alex Campbell injury. Bradford, roared on by large travelling support of well of 1,000, got the game underway attacking towards the Kop. Within a minute they had a decent chance to open the scoring from a set-play but Matt Clarke headed wide from five yards out. The opening stages were frantic with both sides looking to attack from the off and on eleven minutes it was McParland's men who made the early breakthrough. County caught Bradford on the counter attack with Forrester given acres of room down the left, and using his experience and vision he picked out the excellent run of Forte who kept his composure to slot the ball past Evans after running half the length of the pitch to get into the position to score. Bradford had a chance to respond straight away but Pilkington saved Graeme Lee's header from a free-kick out wide on the right. Goalmouth action was limited, but fans in the stadium were treated to a really entertaining game with both sides intent on attacking whenever possible. Just after the half-hour Notts doubled their lead, with Forte again the goalscorer. This time he collected a fine cross from Weston at the far post, cut inside onto his left foot twelve yards out and then drove a low effort beyond Evans. It could have been 3-0 moments later when Weston's cross was sliced just over his own crossbar Report continued on page 8

NSL - PELICAN PUT PRESSURE ON THE LEADERS!

Bilborough Pelican continued to mount the pressure on leaders Wollaton, with a 2-1 away win at Magdala. Ian Fosk and Danny Henshaw both netted for Pelican, to stretch their unbeaten run to 10 games and jump into second place, whilst defeat for Magdala meant they missed the opportunity to climb above Pelican in the table. Pelican's win puts them just two points behind Wollaton, who lost for the second week in a row, a 31 away defeat to champions Caribbean Cavaliers. Ricketts, Henry and former Wollaton player Dan Smith were all on the score-sheet for Cavs, 2-0 Boots Athletic Res whilst captain Lee Beck's strike was just a consolation for the leaders. 3-4 Matrixgrade Despite the loss, Wollaton remain top, a position they have occupied all 2-2 Cotgrave W Res season; although most of their rivals have games in hand. 2-2 Kimberley MW Res Boots are one of those teams, but they couldn't take advantage of 3-3 Underwood Villa Wollaton's defeat, losing away at inconsistent Kimberley. NAA - GREY MARE BACK ON TOP SPOT! Grey Mare United go back to the top of the premier division this weekend as they win and previous incumbents Netherfield Albion are held to a goal less draw at home to Beacon. Grey Mare took all the points in a tight encounter at home to struggling Gedling Southbank A goals from Mark Hearn and Daniel Small not quite enough to deny Grey Mare as goals from Chris Jackson (2) and Adam Wright take them back to the top. Two goals from Adam Priestley for Ashland Rovers is enough to take them up to third place with a win over Vernon Villa. Gareth Clarkston scored twice for Arnold Longbow along with a strike from Sean Saunders to see them take all the points at Trident. A single goal from Ian Burton was the high light of the Santos win at Headstocks. Ashland Rovers Reserves made it 14 straight wins with a 4-1 victory at Greygoose Kyle Pilmore and Ryan Smith both scoring twice with Carl Wilson pulling one back for the home team. Goals from Chris Edson and Jamie Davy take Calverton M.W. B into second spot as they see off Ruddington Village 2-0. Nuthall loose second spot after being held 2-2 at home to A.F.C. Bridgford, Daniel Bramley and Liam Batten scoring for the home side with Tom Wakeman and Kevin Kerr replying. East Valley United took all the points at Kimberley with Luke Denning, Ashley Evans and Josh Matthews with the goals, pounds pulling one back. Jamie Charlton hit a hat trick for Kirton Brickworks as they saw off Vernon Villa Reserves 4-1 Craig Taylor adding the fourth and Hudson Hemsley adding the Villa goal. Boots Athletic A recorded a rare win seeing off Premium 3-0 Martin Smith (2) and Paul Williams with the goals. Coopers Arms were held to a shock draw by struggling Three Crowns Tom Dickens scoring for Three Crowns but Liam Evans ensured Coopers maintain top spot in the second division. Clifton United move up into second spot with a 2-1 win over Arnold Town A Stewart Lee and Leon Bernard sealing the win with Grady pulling one back. Burton Joyce move up into third spot with an impressive 5-0 win at Basford Sam Buckle (2), Harris, Coleman and Trueman all scoring. Luke Thorpe scored twice for Basford United A but still ended up on the loosing side as they went down to goals from Eter, Gordon and Bradshaw of Ali Islam. John Frost scored twice for Notts Metropolis as they see off Netherfield Albion Reserves 3-1 Gareth Price adding the third. Real United are looking good for honours in the third division as they again easily see off their opponents this week putting seven past Nottinghamshire Fourths Fariq Fasil and Koichiro Tozawa both scoring twice. Bingham Town brought Gedling Towns recent good run to and abrupt end with a 4-3 reversal Brent Wilkinson (2), Mark Boyes ad Steve Perry all scoring with Buck, Miller and Maughan replying. Matt Harriott grabbed a hat trick for struggling Harvey as they record a rare win seeing off Sherwood Casuals 4-0 Chris Keeling adding the fourth. Damian Humphries scored twice for Clifton United Reserves as they win 4-1 at Premium Reserves. Report by Lance Hawkridge

COMBINATION - CHASE FOR THE TITLE HOTS UP! Despite taking a 1 nil lead through Mark Nixon and cruising until the midway point of the first half the final premier division 100% record fell on Sunday when Gedling United slipped to a crushing 5-1 defeat at home to AC Broxtowe. The visitors hit back against Nixon's early strike on 26 minutes and went on to dominate the rest of the half but it wasn't until the second period where their dominance really paid off when S Whitely and T Law added a goal apiece to their tally with Webster scoring twice more to complete his hat trick and underline a good win for the mid table side. Greyfriars took full advantage of Gedling's slip up by edging above them in the table after a comfortable 8-0 reverse at Sporting Wheelbarrow where James Needham was again the main target man with 4 goals. Another 4 goals man was Rob Day of Wellington Inn as he helped his side to produce a 6-2 win over a resurgent Bingham Town. Alex Irune 2 and Tim Robinson netted their first goals of the season as Bear FC produced a good all round team performance to help them to a 4-2 win over Bestwood MW. Ali Cumming netted his 12th of the season to complete the home sides scoring with J Tinsley and L Wilson replying for Bestwood. Beechdale Villa came back with all three points from their away game to close the gap at the top of the division one table to two points with a game in hand over the leaders and their hosts for the day AFC Bridgford. Although Adam New scored a second half consolation for the leaders they didn't have enough to contain Beechadale who scored four times inside the first 26 minutes courtesy of Dwayne Haywood 2, Simon Betts and Chris Marks. C.N.C will rue a missed second half penalty as the slipped to their second league defeat in a row as their battle for honours seems to be disappearing. Craig Bates put A1 a goal to the good when he pounced onto a rebounded ball off the keeper who couldn't hold on to a Sean Allen shot before Steven Kelly failed to convert from the spot for CNC to draw level before the interval. Sean Allen compounded that penalty miss when doubled the home sides lead in the 71st minute after being put through by Matt Singleton for 2-0 and with minutes remaining Anthony Robinson reduced the arrears by riffling in from close range after beating three players for what turned out to be a consolation goal. Despite scoring three times away from home courtesy of Jamie Taylor, Adam Kennady and Clifford Knowles bottom side Sporting Inkfish eventually slipped to an odd goal in seven defeat at New Venture who hit back through Gary Willows 4. Newcastle Arms announced their intention of claiming a top two finish in division two after they inflicted the first defeat of the season on leaders Medz Reds and took their 100% record in the process. Chris Roomey, Lee Priestley and Nathan Baker all found the target for the home side whilst

Steven Ward and Wayne Doyle replied for the leaders. Derek Swinburne saved a penalty following a hand ball decision in only the 2nd minute of his sides game and from then on Pure FC went from strength to strength to run out eventual 9-0 winners over N.C.H courtesy of David Swinscoe 3, Ashley Newall 3, Chris Bestwick, Stuart Tucker and Anthony Pearson. Basford Rangers saw a brace apiece from Ian Leebetter, Rob Edwards, Wayne Hall and Dwayne Balling as they trounced Pride of Erin 12-1 with Sam Crossley, James McKay, Nathan Robinson and Howard White compounding P.O.E's misery. Chris Burrows bagged a brace to help his side New Inn to a good win over 4th placed FC St George as they battle to avoid the drop to div 3. whilst Andrew Flint and Lee Annable both scored for Wagon & Horses as they beat Munich 79 by the same score line. Honours were even in the division three game played for 6 points between FC Samba and Sporting Inkfish as both sides try to claw back some games that where plagued by the weather. In the first of two games Samba won 3-1 against the leagues bottom side but things went wrong for them in the second game going down 2 nil to the strugglers. Remi Horder struck twice and Devell Barnhard once as another of the struggling sides Southbank recorded a good 3-1 win as well as a good team performance at Arnold Victory for whom Richard Simson replied. Whilst at the top end of the table Bestwood Re-United's relentless march towards the title continued with a 5-0 win at M.I.S United Chaffoteaux reclaimed second place when Zeke Cox, Wayne Evens and Patrick Swift helped them to a 3-1 home win over P.M. R who took the lead through Kieran Morley but let it slip. Report by Jeff Johnson

EMPAL - TOTAL RECLAIMS HOLD BRINSTHROPE TO A BORE DRAW! Brinsthorpe Rangers are hanging onto top spot of Division 1 by the skin of their teeth after another slip up, this time a 0-0 draw with fourth placed Total Reclaims Demolition. Main winners over the weekend in relation to the tight title race were Radcliffe Olympic and Nottingham Law School. Radcliffe stay second with four games in hand over Rangers after beating Notts Athletic 2-0. Law School leapfrog to third after probably putting paid to West Ends lingering title hopes with superb 3-2 victory. Burton Joyce got back to winning ways after their surprise defeat last week to Medics by thumping bottom side Freeman & Mitchel 5-0 and stay in contention as a result. West Bridgford Albion recorded their first win of 2009 beating Linford Nelson 3-1. Two for Alex Bryan and the “Brazilian” Danny with a thirty yard special. Vishu Passi was Bridgfords man of the match superbly marshalling his team from an unaccustomed defence position at the back. Bore draw of the day saw Notts Medics A and Fanzines fail to billow either net and probably would still be playing if the golden goal rule applied in the Empal for goalless draws! In Division 2 Arnold Cross Keys reached the fifty league goal mark in beating Clifton Bridge Inn 4-1 with the usual suspects hitting the back of the net – Anthony Wilson with two, Ryan King and James Townsend. Keys are now eight points clear of Wheelhouse whom suffered another set back in their title chase. Riverside Moores sent Wheelhouse to their third defeat in a row in a tight game at Bestwood Fire HQ with a narrow 21 victory. An even first goal produced few chances until the last ten minutes as both sides scored simple tap ins as the respective keepers could only parry goal bound efforts. Daniel Thomas for Moores and Richard Edwards for Wheelhouse. A frenetic second half saw the pace and commitment accelerate as both sides went for the win. Wheelhouse had the best chance to seal the game after a clear penalty decision was wasted as the ball was blasted into the five a side pitches behind the goal! Thomas then won the match for Moores with his second again tapping in from close range close to time. Ardley Athletic are back in form sitting quietly in third place after beating Highfield Park Rangers 3-1 at Vernon Park. Rian Bramwell lobbed into an empty net after five minutes to give Athletic an early lead. In form Sean Evans bagged another two to make it six goals in four games to make it 3-0 by half time. Easing off in the second half Ardley gifted Rangers a late consolation goal. Fc Grey Mare Olympico returned to winning ways in domestic football after their County Cup defeat in beating Butler Benfica 4-0. Chris McLaughlin completed a fifteen minute hat trick including a penalty and Reece Beard in the second half made it four. Trent Allstars had comfortable 5-0 win over out of sorts Inn The Bank. Fox & Crown beat Burton Joyce B 4-1 to stay in fourth place. In division 3 Match of the season to date saw Radcliffe Olympic defeat the leaders Chequers United 2-0 to open the title race up once again. Sinnott and Ford with the goals that knock Chequers off the top spot as Punjab Colts take full advantage. Colts destroyed Trent Vale 8-1 to go top for the first time albeit by only one point from United and Wollaton Pirates. Long list of scorers included Saini, Ben, Sandhu, Dosanjh-2 and three for Dhani. Unbeaten Wollaton Pirates were made to work hard against Kinoulton Villa but ran out 4-1 winners to go second on goal difference. Top scorer Frankie Labatte started his hat trick day with an early first half goal to give Pirates the lead. The speedy and irritating Daniel Collinson unsettled the Pirates defence on several occasions and the resulting free kicks went unpunished. Adam Cambpell and Labattes second just before half time made it three at half time and somewhat flattering at that. Labatte completed his “classic” hat trick with a storming header from a fine right wing cross by Anthony Fragola- so right foot/left foot and head to complete a dream hat trick. Sala and Romano had second half chances for Villa. Man of the match for Pirates was Sam Williams who marshalled his side to victory from the back leading by example against potentially difficult opponents. Clifton Dynamo beat Beeston Athletic 6-1 with goals from Rockliffe 3,Main 2 and Humpries. Brooks Villa recorded only their second win of the season in beating Nottingham Medics B 1-0. Plumtree beat Boots Wednesday 4-0. St Anns run away with Division Four beating Toton Athletic 4-1 to open up an unprecedented nineteen point lead over Wollaton Pirates Reserves. Caythorpe enjoyed 3-0 win over the Pirates. In the double header fixture congestion special GMB beat Clifton Dynamo Reserves 5-0 and 10-0 to improve their goal scoring record! Real Bulwell beat Attsu 3-1

NOTTS SUNDAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE - NOTTM ALUMNI GET THEIR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON BEATING RADFORD PARK R’GERS! In the Premier Division, it was a return to League action for leaders Scots Grey following their successful foray in the National Sunday Cup last week, but they found things far from easy, as Redhill extended them all the way. Alan Jefferies scored an early penalty to give Scots the lead, which they increased with an effort from 'makeshift' striker Juree Staples. Redhill responded through Ben Middleton and were inspired as Jefferies missed a second spot kick before Staples extended the hosts lead, as Ryan Nathan reduced Redhill's arrears again. Clifton maintained the pressure, as Carl Horder struck twice with another from Antwon Bonnick in a 3-1 victory over Plough Barfly's. Clumber believe they are still in the title race and with a dress rehearsal for the forthcoming Section KO Cup semi-final against Arnold emerged with the advantage following a 5-2 success. However, the scoreline belied the balance of the game, as the visitors had territorial advantage for periods of the game, which was exemplified as they opened their account through Viv O'Connor from a breakaway. Deservedly, Arnold drew level as Nathan Johnson latched onto a parry from the host's 'keeper but Carl Westcarr restored the lead with another sharp riposte and the inspirational Richard Liburd increased this with a superb volley from 25 yards. Not to be outdone Tom Boyd reduced the arrears with an equally fine drive from 30 yards. The long shots were eclipsed by Clumber substitute Wes Burke, who spotted Arnolds 'keeper out of position to find the net from just five yards inside the visitor's half. Westcarr completed the scoring after outrunning the defence to finish in style. Basement side; Nottm Alumni got their first victory of the campaign with a 2-1 defeat of Radford Park Rangers, with Matt Richardson and James Hopps netting for the homeside and Martin Clothier responding. Adrian Tucker, Lloyd Fletcher, Matt Staff and Reuben Thomas were on target for lowly Nottm WI Cavaliers as they fought back from 2-1 down at the break to overcome Nuthall 4-2, as Arron Hooton and Michael Walsh replied. Yet again there was a change at the top of Division One, as Trowsers, with Paul Williams, Grant Redwood and Duncan Dandy scoring deposed non-playing Chesterfield Arms following a fine 3-0 win at basement outfit; FC Clobber. Rolls Royce Leisure Sunday proved their glitch over Christmas was a temporary set back as they comfortably beat George Street 4-1, with Andy Start netting a hat trick supported by Darren Dickens, as Cain Matthews responded. Tom Cavanagh, Alan Avery and Mark Curry were on target for Stratford Haven in their odd goal in five win over BTSC, as Anthony Atkinson hit two for the hosts. Clifton Centrals moved into a comfortable mid table position as goals from Ben Calladine, Aaron Stewart and James McAllister gave them a comfortable 3-0 result at Old Colonial. The top three in Division Two are into winning ways at the crucial time of the season. Leaders Cotgrave PFC accounted for Rempstone 5-2 with goals from Dan Smith, Sean Jackson, Matt Rinkert(2) and Chris Galloway, as Matt Jelley and Carl Able responded. A hat trick from Adam Brown, two from Ross Cheeseman and one from Damien Mann, ensured Rolls Royce Leisure Villa kept up the pace with a 6-3 win at Nottm Rangers, for whom Kevin Crossman, Chris Swinson and Andrew McKechnie were on target. The prolific Liam Evans notched another four in the fast emerging Vernon Villa's 6-0 eclipse of one time leaders Bulwell Rangers, with Matt Sims and Ross Mercer adding to the tally. Sims Metal, slipped to a surprise 5-1 defeat at Crusader who had Mark Stratford(2), Shane Jones, Neil Thompson and Matt Hall on the score sheet and Ricky Robinson striking the consolation. Lenton Villa had Neil Whittaker and Sean Bowen scoring in their 2-1 success over New Fairham, for whom Martin Radmall netted. Sam Stansfield bagged a brace and Chris Baker-Beale, Dan Walsh and Paul Lockwood one apiece for Portland Arms PH, in their 5-2 win over pointless Fat Cat, who had Rob Stewart and Luke Ingle on target.

down at Yorkshire Main early in the second half, Sam Agar putting the home team in front, but once the visitors had levelled the score, they pilled on the pressure and scored a further two goals to win 3-1. Carl Westcarr, Ben Richardson and Lee Potts the sharp shooters. Radcliffe are ten points behind the leaders, but have four games in hand. Newark Town could still have a say in the championship, despite being in seventh place, they also have games in hand on the clubs above them. The mid table clash between Kinsley Boys and Pinxton ended in a goalless draw. It was again a poor day for the clubs struggling in the lower places in the division, that is except Kimberley Town, they followed last weeks excellent draw at Sutton, with a comprehensive 5-2 win at 'The Stag Ground' against another of the strugglers Rolls Royce Leisure. This result sent Rolls to bottom place, this improved form gives Kimberley a great chance of avoiding relegation, they are now two points behind, third from bottom, Nettleham, with four games in hand and three points from Harrowby United with seven games in hand. Tom Revill (2), Jason Russell (2) and Brother Arron Russell scored for Kimberley. Matt Clowes scored both the Rolls goals. Both Harrowby and Nettleham suffered defeats, Harrowby went down to a single goal defeat at Southwell City, converted by Ben Porter, with only seven minutes remaining. Nettleham slumped to a disappointing 5-0 defeat at home, against Blidworth Welfare. James Senior led the way for the visitors notching a hat trick, one a penalty. James Tagg also scored from the spot and Michael Bollington added Blidworth's other goal. The Black Dragon Premier Division leaders, Westella & Willerby, extended their lead to eight points, a 44th minute goal by Andy Coverdale, gave the East Riding club victory at Newark Flowserve. A shock for second placed Parramore Sports, they suffered their first league defeat of the season, goals by David Chambers in the 33rd minute and Nathan Stiles four minutes later, gave Derbyshire club, Parkhouse a 2-0 win at the Don Valley Stadium. What a good month it as been for the visitors, which as taken them up to fourth place. Louth Town are third, they where a goal down at half time at Bentley Colliery, but a strong second half performance gave the Lincolnshire club a 2-1 victory. Matthew Shaw on target for Bentley. Paul Watts netted both the Louth goals, one a penalty. Louth have thirty-nine points the same as Parramore, with four games in hand of the Sheffield area club and five on the leaders, they are in a good position to make a tilt on the title. Fifth placed Kirkby Town turned in an impressive performance at 'The Sumitt Centre', against local rivals Thoresby Colliery Institute. The first fifteen minutes belonged to the visitors, the home keeper, Paul Stanhope, made two excellent saves and they also missed two reasonable chances but a superb goal by Max Pembleton, who hit a 30 yard pile driver past a startled Thoresby keeper, changed the game around, the home team added further goals through Steven Roebuck and John Upton and although Ross Horndyke pulled a goal back right on half time for Thoresby, Kirkby went in 3-1 in front at the interval. The second half was a complete nightmare for the visitors, once Richard Ranshaw had made it 4-1, the Thoresby defence collapsed against the rampant home team, who added further gaols through Craig Hall, John Upton and Max Pembleton who both finished with a brace, then ace striker, Carl Haslem also netted, as the home team ran out 8-1 winners. A good win for Hutton Cranswick United, goals by Paul Taylor and Danny Cattle, gave the East Riding club a 2-1 win at Church Warsop Miners Welfare. Sam Turner scored for the home team. Rob Gorman netted after only two minutes for Kiveton Park, this goal was sufficient to give the home team victory, over bottom club Bulwell Town. What a great day for the previous bottom club, Welbeck Welfare, they at last turned in a display they normally reserve for cup matches; After a goalless first half goals by Danny Wiltshire (2), Craig Getliffe and Mark Smith gave the Nottinghamshire club a 4-0 victory over Phoenix Sports and Social. Welbeck must have known it was going to

In the match involving the top two teams in the Buckingham Insurance Supreme Division, the honours went to Calverton Miners Welfare, they turned in a superb performance against Harworth Colliery Institute at Scrooby Road, their 40 victory took the Nottinghamshire club above the previous leaders. Calverton lead the table by two points and have three matches in hand of Harworth. Warren Hatfield, Danny Beattie, Lewis Capewell and Craig Boulton the Calverton goal scorers. Third placed Forest Town accounted for Clipstone Welfare, 3-0 at 'The Academy'. James McCann, Craig Jackson and Sam Holmes the marksmen. Third placed Dunkirk Reserves had a comfortable 41 win at Graham St Prims Reserves but fifth placed Staveley Miners Welfare Reserves where held at home by improving Holbrook Miners Welfare Reserves. NOTTS COUNTY REPORT continued from page 4 by Clarke and with Notts in complete control Nowland curled an effort wide from outside the box. Bradford fans showed their frustration by booing their side after a lacklustre display. Bullock had a shot deflected wide for the Bantams by Edwards, who threw his body in way to deny the midfielder a certain goal. The afternoon went from bad to worse for the Bantams - and even better for County - when Delroy Facey fired home a third goal in first-half injury time. Weston again did the damage down the left, whipped in a delightful low cross that the Bantams

Non-League Football Rushden & Diamonds 0 Mansfield Town 1 Mansfield Town claimed a hard fought 1-0 victory against in form Rushden at Nene Park this afternoon. The match looked like it was heading for a 0-0 draw until the drama erupted near the end of the second half. The contest was one of few chances, but Rob Duffy's goal from the spot kick on 89 minutes was enough to separate the two sides. Both sies took time to weigh each other up and Stags registered their first corner of the game within five minutes after neat link up play between Nathan Arnold and Aaron O'Connor. Three minutes later, Arnold showed a good first touch by bringing the ball under control and chipped it towards Matt Somner down the right, but his shot on the turn was well off target. It took Rushden 15 minutes to produce their first real attack of the match, but Stags were never troubled as the Diamonds won their first corner of the contest. The home side were claiming for a penalty five minutes later. Following a fine run, midfielder Robert Wolleaston advanced into the penalty area and fell too easily under a fair challenge from Paul Mayo, and the referee was having none of it and waved away the few home protests. On 28, Gary Silk excelled himself with a hard crunching tackle on the edge of his own box. He was left one on one with Michael Corcoran after Diamonds' captain Andy Burgess sprayed a long range pass into his path, but Silk got across quickly to make the challenge and put the ball into Row Z. It was Stags who created the first clear cut chance of the match and it came six minutes before half time. Arnold laid the ball to O'Connor inside the area but his low shot was saved by Dale Roberts. It was the last opportunity of a first half which saw limited goalscoring chances for both sides. Stags looked lively as they set out the traps in the second half, but the home defence stood as firm as in the first period. Mansfield broke well on 55 minutes and their attack was lead by Nathan Arnold who bursted forward from the half way line. He threaded Paul Mayo down the left and his cross resulted in Stags' third corner of the game. Manager David Holdsworth made his first change on the hour mark. New signing Ryan Williams, who penned an 18 month contract yesterday, replaced Michael Blackwood on the left wing. Moments after the substitution left back Paul Mayo smashed a 30 yard screamer which flew narrowly wide as the game started to come alive. Striker Mark Stallard was brought from off the bench on 71 minutes and replaced Aaron O'Connor in attack. Soon after the change, Ryan Williams scurried into the penalty area and unleashed a powerful low shot which was well saved by Rushden's Roberts, diving low to his left. With 15 minutes left, Diamonds' star man Burgess hit a sweet volley from 20 yards which only just flew over the bar. Moments later, Stags' in form goalkeeper Andy Marriott was thrice called upon to keep out the home side. The best save of which came when he denied a Marcus Kelly shot with his right leg from short range, and he then made two subsequent saves: firstly a punch over the cross bar and a more comfortable catch from the resulting corner. Nathan Arnold then brought a save from home keeper Dale Roberts with eight minutes to go. A minute later, Diamonds should have broke the deadlock. Chris Arthur's cross was met by the head of Robert Wolleaston from five yards out, but he somehow headed wide at the near post. Then came the drama on 89 minutes. Gary Silk surged into the penalty area and was brought down by Chris Arthur. Rob Duffy then slammed down the middle from the resulting spot kick to send the 430 Stags fans wild. Town had to defend with maximum concentration in the closing moments, but they defended doggedly as they did for most of the 90 and held on for another clean sheet, and more importantly, another victory.

Carlton Town began brightly and had the first opportunity to score in the 6th minute when Daryll Thomas missed an easy chance from 6 yards out but he headed wide. Shepshed came back into the game after 20 minutes when Carlton keeper Ali Barcherini missed the ball but Ben Saunders header was cleared by Mike Martin. Ewan Clarke then shot wide for Shepshed when the Carlton defence left him clear on goal. Early in the second half Rob Norris was tackled when well placed to shoot on goal Shepshed continued to look the most likely team to score forcing a save by Barcherini from Ben Saunders. Mike Martin went close with a header for Carlton late in the game and in the dying moments Ben Saunders had a great chance to win the game but shot over the bar. Arnold Town 0 Liversedge 0 Arnold drew a blank in front of goal for the second successive game as they were held to a goal-less draw at Eagle Valley. The home side started brightly with Sloane having two early efforts on goal. Brewster then fired over and the visitors Smith also missed the target when just six yards out. Arnold came close to scoring as Boulters cross was met by the head of Mitchell who saw his effort fly just the wrong side of the post. Arnold had a double let off on the hour mark as first Coubrough's goal bound effort hit Adams and was deflected for a corner. The visitors then had an effort ruled out for hand ball. Arnold pushed for a winner and Thornton, Mitchell and Sloane all went close to breaking the deadlock. The draw leaves the Eagles a massive fifteen points behind leaders Mickleover and with just a dozen league games remaining the title appears to be out of their reach. Newark Town 3 Sutton Town 0 Newark claimed a quick revenge for their floodlit cup exit at Sutton on Wednesday night, with a powerful display which brought them all three points. Chris Riley, Ian Wade and Matt Roche all returned to the starting eleven for this match. The match started brightly, with Town having the better of the opening exchanges. But it took until the 20th minute for the real action to start, Greenhalgh's attempted cross drifting just wide of the post. Sutton again could have taken the lead seconds later, when Longmore's driven shot from 25 yards hit the post, with Riley beaten. Town cleared the danger, and had an opportunity themselves just a minute later when a piledriver by Mark Ellison forced Frost into a fingertip save; the ball narrowly clearing the bar. Sutton were unfortunate not to take the lead again minutes later, Longmore feeding Clay, whose shot hit the outside of the post with Riley at full stretch. However it was Newark who took the lead on 38 minutes , Ian Wade playing in Matt Roche, who, with his back to goal turned superbly to beat his marker Crowder , his shot flashing past Frost and going in off the post. The Blues maintained their lead at the interval, though Sutton will have felt that they had done enough to go in on level terms. Newark began the second half in a positive manner, and had a chance on the 47th minute, as Chris Self controlled the ball just outside the area. However, a timely saving tackle by Bayliss deflected the shot wide of the post. Self had another opportunity two minutes later, but his shot was saved by the legs of Frost. After this early dominance, Newark finally got their deserved second goal on 53 minutes, after Chris Self returned Mark Ellison's short corner, the midfielder's low shot being deflected by Bayliss past the keeper. Town kept up the pressure, and Sam Wilford had a great effort from 25 yards, which had to be tipped over the bar by Frost. Town had another chance on 69 minutes when Mark Ellison threaded the ball through to Matt Roche, but this time his effort was comfortably saved. The next 20 minutes saw few

Live sport on 2 big screens chances, as Sutton looked for a way back into the match, but the Blues well organised defence dealt with everything that was thrown at them, Gareth Dobb and Mark Blant were particularly commanding at the back. Newark rounded off a great performance, with an injury time goal; Chris Self's run and cross finding Matt Roche in the middle of the penalty area, the striker easily beating Frost from close range. An obviously pleased Rupert Thomas said “It was a very pleasing performance. On Wednesday night we worked hard, but today we played good football as well”. I was wearing the leather corset, heels and mask over my eyes and a black raincoat. When I opened the raincoat he didn't say a word, but we had wild sex all night. Then I had to share my story: When my husband came home I was wearing the leather corset, black stockings, stilettos and a mask over my eyes. played every round of the league Cup including the pre-Lims and have taken out no fewer than three top tier division A sides, well done to the Man of Iron and on winning your well deserved place in the final. Through to the halfway cup final are Victory Club A who will face the Commercial, who were the first victims of the swathe of finesse from Man of Iron way back in the very first of the pre-Lims. The next two weeks sees the semi finals of the Pairs where Clint I'Anson & Adam Newton – Vic Club A, face Dale Smith & Darren Lowe – Robin Hoods at the Cricketers, ref: Martin Copestake. Also Alun Henwood & Chris Jackson – Jolly Anglers, face Rob Peach & Dave Large at the Victory Club, ref: Andy Saxton. On 11th March the singles semis is: Darren Lowe – Robin Hoods versus Dean Nixon – Vic Club B at the Cricketers, ref: Andy Saxton and Richard Bloomfield – Birchover B versus Martin Coyle – Robin Hoods at the Inham Nook, ref: Mark Griffiths. Good luck to all and please note the change of venue from the Original venue the Star. Cheers more next week as the leagues get back in action for their battles for the league and also, for some teams, to avoid the relegation zone. Report by Paul G Lacey

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE COUNTY POOL - NOTTINGHAM HAVE A SHOCKER AGAINST LEICESTER! Notts A 20 Leicester A 24 After the shock defeat at Shropshire in the opening game in 2009 this match against run away champions in 2008 was always going to be a difficult fixture for Notts. Leics turned up with a very strong side despite the noted absence of Mark Selby since being lured away from the County pool scene for the slightly more attractive salaries offered on the larger tables. At least with this match there were no writ demands being issued mid-session to disrupt play, which on hindsight may have been a welcome boost for Notts who always seemed to lag slightly behind in this one. Andy Wilson exorcised the ghosts of Shropshire and stuck to the rules with his 3 out of 4 man of the match performance. Clint I'Anson kept up his re-bid for an England place at the only other 75%'er on the day and Notts slumped to a disappointing but creditable 20-24 defeat. Notts B 20 Leicester B-24 This was a case of same fixture, same story, for Notts B against their old adversaries, as Notts stormed into a 1-7 deficit. Then came fightback time and Notts took 6 in a row to square the match 7-7. Time to relax again and Leics pulled away once more and by the midway point Notts were 10-12 down. Ron turned tinkerman and replaced his entire midfield with 4 talented players from the bench and the comeback was on again as Notts clawed back to 16 all with 12 to play. Sadly Notts eased off yet again and this time there was no return and the match was conceded 20-24. Man of the match was the smartly attired Simon Thompson who edged out Andy “the cleaver” Hind from taking his second successive MOM award despite his 3 out of 4 performance. Notts Ladies 20 Leicester Ladies 24 This was the one that got away for the Notts girls after they stormed into a 8-3 lead in the first quarter only to have Leics level at 11-11 by the mid way point. Our ladies edged the third set by a single frame then failed to keep up the momentum by dropping the last set by 3 to 8 and returning a now sadly familiar scoreboard 20-24. The lady of the match for this one was Sarah Taylor with a perfect personal performance (4 from 4), while Sarah Day would have been pleased with her 3 from 4 against the side she completed an undisclosed fee transfer from in 2008. Notts Youth 11 Leicester Youth 33 This one started so well for Notts as they were well in touch with the very strong Leicestershire opponents after the first set, only trailing by the solitary leg. Set 2 was a disaster with Adam Anderson securing the only leg from a possible 11 and took the juniors into the break 6-16 down. Time for lunch and a late return by a number of juniors, prompted a hard line measure from Youth manager Richard Fewkes. Four players were replaced for the back 22 though the juniors still couldn't find the formula from the first set and went down 5-17 in the second half. Grant Stocken with 3 from 4 was the player of the match in this one, with Ryan Barber and Matt Finch taking the majority of the remaining legs with 2 from 4 returns. Report by John Brinkworth

Following a minor stutter, which saw lucky wins by Eagles, Ady Newman and Stu McKinnon over Donut Sassoon and Ball-chucker Loz respectively, Spot On moved up another gear and took the final four legs, including wins for Calverton and Arnold Interleague stars, Danny Butler and Simon Thompson, to round off a great start and move them top of the league. Victory Club joined Spot On at the top of the table with a classy win over newly promoted Balfour Club. After losing the first leg, where Paul Iremonger totally outplayed Scott Redfearn, the Bee Tree Boys took command and won the next eight, which saw a welcome return to action (and Notts) for ex Shropshire county captain, Miss'em Lewis, who destroyed twice Division 2 Averages winner, Hotdog Gregory in a one-sided affair. Balfour Club gained some consolation with late wins for Footloose star, Kevin Bacon and new captain, Glen Dyer, who's victory went some way to answering the outrageously premature calls for his resignation by some of his players. In Division One's other game, Cherry Tree A gained a lucky win over a depleted Railway Volunteers team, bereft of six of their top players, including Nick Peake, Jimmy Hallam and Steve Davis. Corey Blackshaw, sporting a sparkling new jacket, just edged Tom Hodgkinson to the man of the match award after he rattled in a quick-fire 8-baller in the first frame and then made a classy finish in his pairs leg . . . if only his brother could have reciprocated for the visitors. The Vol gained some consolation by seeing four of their winning players move to the top of the League averages closely followed by their Calverton & Arnold Interleague team-mates from Spot On B. In Division Two, a new-look Major Oak team got off to a flying start with a demolition job on Cherry Tree B. Val's Arnold girls fielded four new signings in the match, made up mainly of ex Top Spot Let Downs players, but it was left to veterans Dale Nix and Harry Lowe to seal the victory, albeit with a controversial black. Cherry Babies' only singles winner was Dave “Richo” Richards and his win saw him storm to the top of the Division Two averages well clear of Oak's ex County star, Matt Coates, who is still languishing in 21st position. In the battle of the Liberal Clubs, Arnold came out on top of Carlton after an almighty match at the new home of Arnold pool. Team Captain and everyone's favourite roofer (well, maybe not Tosh's), Keith Simm, playing for his 68th different team (a new Notts record), made amends for his poor singles CALVERTON & ARNOLD DISTRICT POOL LEAGUE - TITLE leg performance by partnering veteran, Malcolm Reilly in the match winning leg, where even Phil Taylor's luck could do FAVOURITES THRASH RELEGATION FAVOURITES! nothing to stop the inevitable victory. DIVISION 1 Pegasus Snooker Hall kept pace with the chasing pack with a good 5-3 victory over 5th placed Beeston Snooker Hall. At Pegasus, Chris Brooks dispatched Chris Hodgkinson but Jamie Mathers lost to Tom Walters. Steve Booth is starting to get back to his gritty best and restored the lead for the team with a good fight-back against Shaun Harlow. In the pairs Brooks knocked in the only high break of the evening with good 52 to see off Beeston's challenge from Hodgkinson & Walters and give Pegasus a 3-1 home leg win. At Beeston, Pegasus debutant Danny Castel-Nuovo held his nerve to firstly force a re-spotted black before playing a frame winning double from Andy Spicer's traditional re-start. Neil Jones was made to work for his win against Pegasus youngster Eric Towle who had a good run of 21 and seemed to be potting everything at distance. Jones pulled himself back into contention with a good 30 break before making sure of the frame with a near clearance of 22. Mike Langdon gained the all-important winning frame with a solid 68-30 win against Beeston skipper Steve Cheung. Cheung started

Darts THE JOHN BROGAN ALL DAY DARTS COMPETITION! The John Brogan all day darts tournament took place last Sunday at the Hillside which, sadly, was to be the last one at this venue which is scheduled to close as the present economic climate swallows up yet another great establishment in its credit crunching wake. A great day was has by all and some brilliant darts were thrown throughout the day, unfortunately not by myself as my bungling awkward lobs cost my team many a match as the beer flowed so did the water in my eyes and, was it me or did those doubles just get smaller? Not so though for some teams as the high scores and high checkouts were banging in throughout the day with Paul Gadsby of 'All the Queens Men' (Queens, Beeston) hit the highest finish of the day with a 167, well played. The winning team lifting the John Brogan Trophy and the main prize monies were All the Queens Men with the Old General coming runners up. The Mary Miller Trophy, the Ladies team KO event, was profoundly dominated by the Birchover ladies, who preferred to be known as the 'Birchover Bitches' (and very smart they were too in their synchronised gear) These gals chucked some mean arrows throughout the day without losing a single match as a team and taking the mini league rounds 5-0 in a final face off against the Pride of Erin the Birchover Bitches proved themselves Queens of the oche and took the

brightly with an 18 break but runs of 24 and 17 put Langdon in the driving seat from which he never looked back. In the pairs Jones and Clint I'Anson beat Langdon and Castel-Nuovo. BCI Snooker Centre “A” defeated an in-form Stadium Leisure 62. At BCI, Jason Bettridge had breaks of 32 and 30 as he dispatched Bob Walker with ease. Steve Butler had a good 28 break which helped him to a good win against Neil Elliott. Danny Di Folco then had a great win against Tony Collins to put Stadium 2-1 in front. Walker and Butler took on Bettridge and Steve Coleman in the pairs and the BCI duo looked like they were going to win the frame easily, however the Stadium pair kept on fighting until Bettridge took the blue to put the frame safe and square the leg 2-2. At Stadium, Pete Gormley made a welcome return to the team but he was still too weak with a virus to mount a challenge against Wayne Martin. Three 20+ breaks from Martin did the damage as Gormley managed to score just 1 point. Clary Plowman only lost on the pink against Kwok Yip and Matt Ellis failed to take his chances against Jon Mason, who defeated the Stadium man 64-50. In the pairs, Martin and Sam Haugh blew Ellis and Gormley away, winning 82-19 to secure a 4-0 whitewash for BCI. DIVISION 2 Wollaton Royal British Legion kept their play-off hopes alive with a 5-3 win against Lenton Liberal Club. At Lenton Laurence Richards got the home team off to a good start, making a decent 29 break against A.Winson and winning 65-17 with the colours still remaining on the table. Steve Dixon got himself a 32 point lead with only the blue, pink and black remaining but his opponent M.Healy wasn't going to give up (maybe he thought it was a cup match) until Dixon potted the blue and the frame was finally over at 63-26. James Wood was outplayed in his frame against M.Hind and the Wollaton player won 62-20. In the doubles, the form that had seen the Lenton pair of Richards and Dixon win their singles frames completely deserted them and neither seemed to be able to pot a ball for a while. Credit should go to A.Winson and M.Healy though as they really upped their game and deserved to level the scores to 2-2. At Wollaton, Melvin Smith showed signs of some form but couldn't string a decent break together and in the end he was outclassed by Rex Benson 21-67. Jim Wright was on fire against Gordon Gunn as he once again scraped across the winning line in a tight 46-37 win. Trevor Clarke suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Ivan Noon, losing 36-46. In the pairs, Wollaton's Benson and Jack Packer beat Smith and Clarke 49-39. Report by Steve Butler

NOTTINGHAM CENTRAL DARTS - PRIDE LOSE BUT THEY REMAIN TOP! LADIES: Pride had a close call this week as, despite their loss, they still hang on to their championship lead thanks to losses by both Clifton Bridge and Cambridge. But coming up fast and pushing Cambridge into fourth is Strelley who took a 5-2 victory over Clifton Welfare. Strelley also have the advantage of being a game in hand and will be looking to tighten the pressure on the Pride if they are victorious, on home turf, in this weeks face off against Clifton Bridge. A similar case scenario in div B sees Park Tavern under very serious threat from Nuthall after a big loss from the Park and the Nuthall's win against the Vine 6-1. Sun Valley are pulling up close having beaten Park Tavern 5-2. With 5 matches left its still open season at the top tier in both leagues. MIXED: Congrats to Cambridge of div A who are the winter

season's league champions being in an untouchable position having only dropped one match all season, well played. With only one match left in div A It's a final face off match between Madhouse and Nuthall B. Madhouse will need a minimum of a 6-1 win over Nuthall to take second slot. Div B have 3 matches left and The Shed only needing to win one match to take the div B title. Querneby can still be toppled by Old General and face them in next weeks upcoming game which could go a long way in deciding second place. The General have the advantage of a game in hand which will be played this week. MEN'S: With just 4 games left for the top two div A sides they both need to secure wins at least over the next two games to gain security at the top and even then are not untenable. Both Beechdale and Queens know they face tough matches over the next few weeks with Queens facing close rivals Park Tavern this week. Div B's second slot Birchover and third placed Madhouse only have 3 matches left and need to win all and hope that fate plays a hand as the Horse & Jockey and King Billy are a game in hand and close at heel. Incidentally the Billy have pilled off a brilliant coup in winning their last 3 games on the trot against some tough opposition, certainly worthy of my special “team of the month” mention, what a comeback for this near bottom of the league team, well played.

Rugby NOTTINGHAM POWER THROUGH TO THE SEMI’S! Mounts Bay 7 Nottingham 66

It was an early start for the loyal Green Army travelling fans but they were rewarded for their commitment with a free flowing display of rugby from a rampant Nottingham side that ran in 10 tries to book their place in the Semi Final of the EDF Energy National Trophy and keep the dream of a Twickenham final alive. The picturesque, Mennaye Field, former home of the Cornish Pirates was the venue for the Quarter Final against National Division Two side, Mounts Bay. The Mennaye, which is a stones throw from the English Channel, had reportedly been deep in mud just weeks before but the Green and Whites would have been pleased to find a hard and fast pitch on their arrival in Penzance. It was clear from the kick off that the Green and Whites meant business and were intent on dominating the game in the early exchanges. The tone was set by Tim Molenaar, who was making his first start since November. A clean lineout on half way gave the powerhouse centre a perfect platform to attack the Mounts Bay midfield and he brushed aside the attempted tackle from the 10 and 12 and looked to be clear through to the line. Covering defence managed to halt Molenaar's run under the post but Nottingham produced quick ball to release David Jackson down the left hand side and the Green and Whites were ahead 5-0 in the first minute of the game. Tim Taylor missed the conversion.

Such an early try could have easily seen Nottingham take the foot off the pedal but there was clear evidence of a dogged determination about the side as Joe Duffey caught the kick off cleanly and set off on one of his trademark runs. It took just 8 minutes for Nottingham to extend their lead. Controlled pressure forced a centre field scrum deep in the Mounts Bay 22. Number 8, Dan Montagu, fed Chris Pilgrim who took the gap and dived over the line, Taylor adding the conversion. And it was Taylor who was next to cross the line following a lovely break down the middle of the pitch. Taylor grubber kicked ahead and re gathered to score under the posts and he added the easiest of conversions to give Nottingham a 17-0 lead after just 11 minutes. The Green and Whites continued to use their pace and power to test the Mounts Bay defence and second row, Sam McDonald, starting in place of the Australia bound Lee Morley, crossed the line from close range. Taylor converted. Talismanic captain, Craig Hammond was next on the score sheet, on 28 minutes, to take the score to 31-0. An injury to Sam McDonald meant the early introduction of Ian Nimmo, an imposing figure, who had an outstanding debut. As it looked like Nottingham might rattle up a cricket score Mounts Bay hit back with a try just before half time. Despite the power and pace of the Nottingham play the Mounts

Bay pack kept coming at the Green and Whites and they were rewarded for their pressure in the scoreboard corner of the ground when Hilton broke free from a maul to dive over. Fly Half, Dan Hawkes, kicked the conversion from the touchline. The home side's spell of pressure continued into the second half but the Nottingham defence held firm and it was Jackson who got them back on track slicing through the defence to score under the posts on 48 minutes. Taylor converted to take the score to 38-7. The try prompted a number of changes from the management team and University students, Charlie Hayter and Charlie Davies, were introduced. Both players slipped seamlessly into the side in place of Tim Molenaar and Chris Pilgrim respectively and the game started to open up. Both sides were now throwing caution to the wind and running the ball at every opportunity. Nottingham continued to dominate the game and tries from Nic Rouse, who has scored in every round this season, and Jack Cobden took the score to 59-7. Adam Corcoran and James Kirk replaced Dan Montagu and Matt Parr, respectively and Jackson rounded off the game in style completing his hatrick and sending the Green Army home with smiles on their faces and no doubt dreaming of Twickenham. Hull Stingrays 6 Nottingham Panthers 4 Hull Stingrays again proved a thorn in Nottingham's side as they pulled off a 6-4 victory on Sunday night. Coach Corey Neilson said afterwards, "Obviously I'm disappointed. We've got to put that one down to NEXT HOME FIXTURES fatigue which in turn led to a string of poor decisions. Hull jumped to a two goal lead but BallsMania readers Call 0115 8533063. a big start to the middle period saw the GMB Panthers in front 2-3 only for Hull to equalise in the second and regain the lead at the start of the third. Kevin Bergin's second goal equalised with just under ten minutes to go but Hull hit a game winning goal at 51.55 and an empty-netter with 31 seconds on the clock. Elsewhere Sheffield won in Coventry and will win the title with one more victory as soon as Coventry lose a game, both have six games to go. Meanwhile Edinburgh beat Belfast and Newcastle from as little as £50 for the season beat Cardiff on penalties.

Goal mouth action against the Bison Nottingham Panthers 3 Basingstoke Bison 0 A goal in each period added up to a 3-0 victory on Saturday and a shut-out for netminder Michel Robinson. Two goals disallowed in the first period meant the only strike which counted was Kevin Bergin's pounce on his own rebound. The lead was doubled in the second with a fabulous top shelf finish by Brendan Cook from Jade Galbraith's set-up from behind the goal-line and the pair repeated the trick in the third. Coach Corey Neilson was delighted with the win, which saw youngster James Neil have a fine "debut" in defence and a competent display from start to finish to secure the points. James Ferrara led teenagers Sam Bullas and Robert Lachowicz on the third line. "We did what we had to do, Basingstoke worked hard and the margin could have been greater," said Coach Neilson afterwards. Elsewhere Belfast beat Hull (8-6 including an empty-netter) Coventry won in Manchester (2-6) and Cardiff came from behind to take the points off Newcastle (4-1).

RAGING BULL PROMOTIONS ISIS NOTTINGHAM 28th FEB

THE RESULTS!

Once again there was a sell-out crowd at the Isis Nightclub to witness 14 bouts of fantastic boxing! It was a great night for the home grown talent as no less than 7 Nottingham fighters won their bouts! Topping the bill was Ilkeston’s Daz Davis who beat his challenger Ian Toby with a knockout after 4 rounds. After the fight BallsMania learned that Daz broke his left hand in the encounter in the second round! Both boxers gave a good account of themselves early on trading some heavy punchers. Daz always looked in control and shook Toby a number of times with shots to the head and body. Toby deserves credit for taking a number of particularly powerful shots...including the one which broke Daz’s hand! Inevitably Daz beat his man in the 4th round with a number of unanswered punches sending Toby to the canvas. Daz Davis Centre flanked by Promoters

Sarj defending his English Cruiserweight Title was made to work very hard by Ady Shirley from Mansfield. Shirley defended well and seemed to soak up the early pressure from Sarj who seemed to be going for his traditional early knock out. Shirley continued to box cleverly using his reach to keep Sarj at bay and

The decision went Sarj’s way and he did perhaps just pinch it - however had Shirley been slightly fitter the result could have been very different. Danny Lichfield from Hucknall, fighting at Cruiserweight was like a pocket rocket as he fought a stubborn Craig Wood from Blackpool. Lichfield never stopped punching and kept the pressure on Wood throughout a bruising encounter. Wood traded blows with Lichfield and caught the Hucknall man a number of times with some great shots. Undeterred Lichfield kept coming at his man and late on got caught with a couple of vicious shots which somehow he seemed to manage to just shake off. The fight went the distance and although the result was a very close call, for sheer guts, determination and all round workrate the win went to Lichfield. Nottingham’s Karl Beard (right) taking some hammer early on

Eddie Brown from Nottingham took on Mickey Greene from Manchester in a ‘blink and you’d have missed it’ encounter! Brown came out of his corner struck Greene once and it was over! The Nottingham man has now earned himself the name Eddie ‘One Punch’ Brown! The BallsMania & NRG Fuel Babes - lovely!

Ryan Archer from Stapleford looks another exciting prospect with a spectacular display which saw him knock out his opponent inside 30 seconds! Finally Dave Scott from Nottingham had a tough encounter against the big punching Carl Sweeney from Manchester. After some tough punishment in the first round Dave’s corner men sensibly threw in the towel. All in all it was an excellent night which everyone seemed to enjoy. The atmosphere was fantastic and all the boxers deserve full credit for making it such a great evening, Keep your eye out in BallsMania for the next Raging Bull Promotion! Karl Beard of Tommy Thompson’s Boxing School fought a late replacement from Milton Keynes. The man from Milton Keynes who had a background in cage-fighting came out the corner like a steam train and rattled Karl with some heavy shots. The shorter stockier man from Milton Keynes made a real nuisance of himself getting inside Karl’s long reach and roughing him up. Karl was trying to use his boxing skills to keep his opponent at bay but it was clear the man from Milton Keynes was here for a brawl and continued to plough forward getting ‘inside’ with more heavy shots. Karl Beard using his long reach to his advantage

With seconds to go in the first round Karl took some further heavy punches knocking him down. The bell went and it was clear the Nottingham man was in a right old scrap! All credit to Karl, he came back out for the second round more composed and began to use his long reach more effectively. Working hard and sending in a number of combinations the man from Milton Keynes backed off a little and Karl caught him with a great shot to his shoulder. His opponent clutched his shoulder in agony and the ref dived in. The fight was stopped and Karl makes it 2 wins in 2 along with a kick up the backside from his coach Tommy!

Hucknall’s Wayne Buck took the English Heavyweight Title in spectacular fashion beating Shaker Hussein inside 30 seconds! Wayne was simply too powerful for his opponent who never really connected with a clean shot. Defending English Cruiserweight Sarj putting up his defence against a tough Ady Shirley

avoid his big shots. As the bout continued both boxers began to visibly tire and Shirley had to do all he could to avoid Sarj’s wild shots. Whilst Shirley seemed to be the better technician it was Sarj who seemed more determined to land the knock out shot and in the final seconds he began to overpower his opponent before the final bell rang! Neither man would budge as both began to tire towards the end of the fight!
