Halfway through the implementation of the Bangor University Internationalisation Strategy, A Five Year Plan, which was launched in March 2011, the University has made progress in fulfilling its ambition to become “an International University for the region.” Bangor’s reputation as an international University is recognised in the World Top University table published by QS in September 2013. It places Bangor 143rd in the world as a destination for international students. It is also in the top 200 universities (183rd) as a recruiter of international staff, and is in the top 50 UK universities.

This report highlights some of our achievements in the last academic year. In particular, we saw a significant increase in outward staff and student mobility. More students than ever are studying in more destinations at very prestigious universities. A number of Schools were successful in securing international joint research funds in the reporting year, which laid a promising foundation for large-scale sustainable research collaboration with some of the best universities in the world. The University developed rapidly its transnational education (TNE) provision in the last year with more than 400 students now studying towards a Bangor degree in more than 15 countries. This has started to make a positive impact on Bangor’s brand recognition and contributed to the University’s finances.

The summer of 2013 saw the largest number of participants and the most diverse student body enjoying our two-week international summer schools. Besides the well established American Fulbright Welsh Summer Institute, the Bilingualism Centre hosted a successful Cognitive Linguistics Summer School with about 170 postgraduate students and young researchers from more than 20 countries. For the first time, the Bangor School of Ocean Sciences ran an intensive field trip summer school for a group of students from Shanghai Ocean University. The Law School continued their summer school with an expanded student body. The glorious summer, dedicated staff support and some unique activities made it an unforgettable experience for all the summer school students.

However, the University faced great challenges with regard to recruitment overseas. We continued to suffer from the downturn in India, and for the first time in the last 10 years, Bangor experienced reduced applications and registrations from Chinese students. This report provides a detailed analysis of 2013-14 recruitment performance and we are working with the Schools to address some of the challenges. It is worth pointing out that despite the difficulties in the international recruitment market, it is encouraging to see that a large number of Bangor Schools continued to increase their international student numbers, such as Biological Sciences, Ocean Sciences, Electronic Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, English, Social Sciences, Medical Sciences & Psychology.

I hope this report demonstrates progress and achievement in delivering the University’s Internationalisation Strategy. It also addresses the great challenges we are facing in overseas recruitment. We look forward to working with all colleagues and partners in the coming years to fulfill our international ambitions.

International Marketing & Recruitment

The international recruitment environment became increasingly competitive during the 2012-13 recruitment year. The UK HE sector experienced a continued downturn in a number of markets, including India, Pakistan and Nigeria which have all been affected by UK Government’s immigration policy. Bangor suffered a significant decline from China for the first time in ten years.

During the academic year 2012-13, 1,770 international students (FTE) studied in Bangor including 805 undergraduate students, 753 postgraduate taught students and 213 PhD students. This is just over 18% of the total student population. The figure below shows the growth of our international students over a period of four years.

UNDERGRADUATE RECRUITMENT It is encouraging to see that many Bangor Schools performed well in undergraduate international student recruitment. Apart from the Schools of Business, Law, Education and Modern Languages which experienced a small decline compared to the same point last year , all other Schools have experienced an increase.

However, we experienced a significant downturn in international student recruitment for 2013-14. At this early stage, we anticipate a 15% decrease compared to 2012-13. The main areas of decrease are Bangor Business School at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in terms of recruitment subjects and China in terms of the recruitment market.

Factors Affecting Recruitment External The removal of the Post Study Work (PSW) visa in 2012 UKBA’s introduction of credibility interviews in 2013 The threat of bonds in ‘high risk’ countries Strong competition within the UK universities. Effects of the market downturn is evident amongst many UK universities. Academic entry requirements at Masters level have been lowered, in some cases from 2(i) to 2(ii) by higher ranked universities, or from 2(ii) to 3rd class degrees by similarly ranked universities. Strong competition from other countries. An increasing number of UK based international students have applied to study Masters in the US and Canada in 2013-14. This cohort has been an important postgraduate taught market for BBS in recent years. International students are more selective and demanding on university and course rankings, as well as all the services available to them from accommodation, career services, sports facilities, healthcare and local primary and secondary schools.

Internal Lack of industrial placement and internship opportunities. UK universities that have incorporated such professional development within their programmes maintained or grew their international student numbers.

Key Marketing & PR activities In 2012-13, we continued to benefit from the engagement of senior staff including the Vice Chancellor representing the University and the Welsh Higher Education Sector around the world

High profile visits to China, Saudi Arabia, UAE and the US from the University gave the Bangor brand maximum exposure on the international higher education stage. The University received a large number of visits from overseas universities including some very prestigious institutions such as Sao Paulo Institute of Oceanography, Denver University, University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Victoria University of Australia, Korea University, Qatar University , Tokyo Metropolitan University, Mahidol University, Thailand and Bridge House College, Nigeria to name a few.

In the UK, relationships with various Cultural Bureaux were strengthened through visits to the Kuwait Cultural Bureau, Saudi Cultural Bureau and Iraqi Cultural Bureau. The Vice Chancellor hosted a visit by the Iraqi Cultural Attaché. The close relationship with the Iraq Cultural Bureau was further strengthened as Bangor University was selected, along with Imperial College to host the 4-week Academic Development programme for academic staff from 11 Universities in Iraq.

A new Bangor University representative desk arrangement was established in Lagos, Nigeria with agent BCIE. An officer has been appointed to work exclusively for Bangor University and to date the arrangement has been working smoothly.

Multicultural Student Experiences More than 60 students attended the 2012-13 Cultural Challenge, an event modeled on the University Challenge, but with a lot more fun, to promote multicultural awareness and appreciation.

With more than 2,000 international and EU students on campus, Bangor is a colourful and vibrant university. Many different languages, cultures, histories and customs interact on campus every minute of every day, which makes it an amazing place for staff and students to learn from each other and enjoy the rich cultural environment. The International Student Support team supported by a number of international student societies, especially the Chinese Student Society and The Confucius Institute, staged a Cultural Challenge competition. 12 teams each made up of 4 students from different nationalities reached the final, and turned the Powis Hall into a “United National” festival with music, dance, food, costume, humour, technology and stories from around the globe.

The judging panel made up of students and staff enjoyed the performances which showcased different cultures. The winning team enjoyed a week in China during the Easter holidays. As well as sightseeing, they enjoyed meeting students from Bangor’s partner universities.

Thank you very much for helping me apply for my visa. Your kind, gentle assistance greatly alleviated my concerns at that time. Please know how much I appreciate your help. Xin Liu (China)

Bangor Students Abroad 2012-13 saw Bangor staff and students embrace the various exciting study abroad opportunities. There is a significant cultural change on campus, and it underpins the University’s internationalisation strategy of making our students global citizens with the language, cultural and work skills required in the global labour market.

Currently just one UK student studies abroad for every 15 international students in the UK. The UK lags behind Spain, France, Germany, Italy and Poland in accessing the European Commission's Erasmus funding for study or work placements. Since the introduction of the international experience year in 2011-12, Bangor’s student mobility increased by 18% in 2012 comparing with 2011. In total, more than 170 Bangor students enjoyed some form of international exchange, which is about 9% of a year cohort. Staff mobility also increased by 18% comparing with 2011.

Study Abroad in Numbers Bangor has 146 Erasmus Exchange partners A full list is available at: www.bangor.ac.uk/international/exchanges/ incoming/partners Bangor has 15 International exchange partners including new partners in Australia and America: Deakin University, Melbourne and Pace University, New York. A full list is available at: www.bangor.ac.uk/ international/intl_exchange_partners Erasmus contract increased by 20% to more than £403,000 in 2012-13 Total number of mobility students reached over 170

Going to Brazil and taking the opportunity to work abroad not only gave me more confidence in my studies, motivation to become a better engineer and a willingness to try new things but also gave me a better perspective on the World. Quite frankly in the UK we have so many opportunities that we let slip by but if you’re given the chance to go and study abroad, grab it with both hands and don’t look back, I loved every minute of it Sean Kiely, Final year MEng student, completed a 9 week placement in the University of Sao Paulo

I can't describe the VIMS trip as anything less than AMAZING!! It was a perfect way to experience fieldwork abroad and learn about several new and interesting species. We went out on the boats most days getting opportunities to see the different parts of the saltmarsh and learn about different trawling methods, one day consisted of seine netting which involved getting in the water and was great fun. International Research Collaboration Working in partnership with a wide range of reputable universities worldwide, for academic exchange, research collaboration and capacity building is at the heart of our Internationalisation Strategy.

In addition to some major international and European funding successes, Bangor academics took advantage of a number of government backed research collaboration funding opportunities in 2012-13, and secured grants for research collaboration and mobility from China and Brazil. Such initial success will encourage researchers to pursue large scale, more sustainable research collaborations with major grants from various funding bodies in the UK and abroad.

UK-China Joint Research Professor Jianming Tang working with the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China successfully secured a two year joint research funding of £36,000. The award was part of the UKChina research collaboration initiative funded by UKTI and China Scholarship Council. The two years funding started in February 2013 and will support up to 6 Bangor PhD students and researchers to undertake research in the field of optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OOFDM) at UESTC, which is one of the top research universities in China.

At the announcement of the success of the bid, Professor Tang commented “OOFDM proposed by Bangor university is one of the hottest optical communications technologies of today. The proposed project brings together world-class expertise to explore the feasibility of utilising the OOFDM technology in future cost-effective, high-speed optical access networks. Bangor is the world-first and world-only organisation capable of experimentally demonstrating a series of cutting-edge, end-to-end, real-time OOFDM transceivers operating at speeds of up to 20Gb/s. The Chinese partner, UESTC, has state-of-the-art passive optical network (PON) test-beds capable of carrying real end-user’s traffic.”

Bangor – FAPESP Joint Research Since the launch of the Science without Border (SwB) Scholarship Scheme by the Brazilian government, Bangor has welcomed over 20 undergraduate study abroad students and 3 PhD students. To fully engage with the SwB scheme and to effectively raise Bangor’s profile in the new market with a strong message that Bangor is a leading research university, a pump prime research fund was jointly set up by Bangor and FAPESP, the Sao Paulo State research funding body, to initiate and support research exchange and development between Bangor University and Sao Paulo State universities. £50,000 was made available to three projects for a period of two years starting in July 2013.

Bangor School of Ocean Sciences and the Marine Science Institute of Sao Paulo University, Brazil successfully set up three research projects reflecting Bangor's international reach and research strengths in Marine Sciences and Marine Ecology: • Locating vulnerable marine ecosystems on the Brazilian Shelf: Maximising research potential, Dr Andrew J. Davies (Bangor), Paulo Y. G. Sumida (Universidade de São Paulo) • Integration of marine ecological processes at multiple spatial scales in the Brazilian coastal zone, Dr Stuart Jenkins (Bangor), Áurea Maria Ciotti (Universidade de São Paulo) • Tropical and Temperate Marine Ecosystems Adapting to a Changing World, Dr Ian McCarthy (Bangor), Prof. Dr. Alexander Turra (Universidade de São Paulo)

Bangor Leads International Consortium to Combat Poverty Dr Julia Jones, senior lecturer in the School of Environment, Natural Resources and Geography is leading a £2 million project to investigate whether international schemes that pay people in low income countries to protect globally important habitats can reduce poverty. The 4 years funding is from the Ecosystem Service for Poverty Alleviation. It involves a consortium of institutions in the UK, Madagascar, the Netherlands and the USA. The research will help ensure funds from international ecosystem payment schemes make a real difference to people’s lives. The success of the funding award was built on the School’s international reputation in tropical ecology, land use and international development.

Bangor Transnational Education The Transnational (TNE) landscape is competitive and constantly changing with varied degrees of risks and opportunities. Since the launch of the Bangor Internationalisation Strategy, which placed TNE at the heart of the University international development, great progress has been made. More than 400 students are now studying towards a Bangor award in their home countries either on a validated, franchised or online programme.

“The course is even better than I expected. It is very interesting with lots of real case studies and my questions were always addressed seriously by the tutors.” Mr Zhiwei Tan, Co-owner of Shanghai Kang Nian Life Science Tech Co

Bangor’s online MSc Forestry sponsored by the Commonwealth Scholarship and the online Charted Banker’s MBA programme continued to flourish with students from more than 15 countries on the programme.

To meet the market demand, two new MBAs will be validated in November 2013, MBA in Finance and MBA in Marketing, which will triple the number of students in the two cosmopolitan cities of Shenzhen and Shanghai in 2013-14.

Validation with RITS in China Following the successful validation of the MBA Business Management programme with the Research Institute of Tsinghua University in Shenzhen (RITS), 193 students registered on the two year part time programme in RITS Shenzhen and Shanghai in 2012-13. Most students are working professionals in international companies or running their own business. The MBA programme provides a unique opportunity to systematically study theories of management, and encourage open discussions of business strategy and management skills.

Validation and Franchise with MDIS in Singapore & Tashkent Building on the success with RITS in China, Bangor Business School expanded the TNE provision to Singapore and Tashkent working with one of the largest and most reputable higher education providers in Singapore, the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS). A range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in business and finance are validated in MDIS Tashkent campus with a first intake in September 2013 of about 180 undergraduate students.

Similar programmes were validated for franchise to MDIS Singapore with a first intake expected in 2014. The Future As demonstrated in this report, Bangor made significant progress in its TNE activities in 2012-13, and there is a much clearer understanding among Schools and Services about the benefits and challenges of TNE. It is recognised as an important international education area which complements the traditional international student recruitment. However, its potential for Bangor is yet to be fulfilled. Traditional international student recruitment in the UK, or the so called “global” segment of the international students, will grow at a slower pace owing to pull factors such as the challenges related to immigration policies,

increased competition and cost of recruiting international students, slow recovery from the economic downturn in the UK, and more sophisticated education needs from students and sponsors. Bangor has seen a significant slow down in overseas recruitment for 201314, while many UK universities are in the same position. On the other hand, students who have global aspirations, but need or want to stay local, the so called “glocal” students, are the great potential for the faster growth of the TNE. The “glocal” students from the expanding wealthy middle classes in emerging economies are willing to pay for a global educational experience while staying in their home country or region through a range of TNE models including validation, franchise, dual, joint, overseas campuses and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

Although Bangor has taken a successful first step in TNE development, as a globallyminded university, we still have a long way to go to fully realize the potential TNE can offer. One key issue we must consider in delivering any TNE projects is the deep understanding of the ever changing needs of the “glocal” students and identifying the best fit delivery models to be competitive in the increasingly competitive TNE market. “Glocal” students are different from “global” students after all as they would like to earn the social prestige and career edge associated with a foreign education without having to go very far from home.

English Language Support A comprehensive pre-sessional academic English and in-sessional subject specific English programme delivered by a dedicated professional team in Bangor enabled our international students to fulfill their potential.

The academic year 2012-13 proved to be another successful year for the English Language Centre for Overseas Students (ELCOS). The summer pre-sessional course numbers peaked at 184 students. In terms of our in-sessional provision, the credit-bearing modules once again recruited well, with numbers slightly higher than the previous year. The existing provision of 1-1 tuition, the evening writing support classes and the free General English classes (International Cultures & English) were all well attended and garnered very positive feedback from the respective course members. Our targeted support initiatives with Electronic Engineering, Chemistry, Management PGTs, Linguistics, Law PhDs, Psychology, Biology and Music continued to progress well.

Additionally, ELCOS validated 3 modules for the CoHABS pre-Masters initiative, 2 modules for the Linguistics UG ‘International English Language Studies’ programme and 3 generic EAP PG modules available to all PG students. Bangor IELTS centre has operated effectively in Bangor, Wrexham, and Coleg Cambria in the last academic year with a new offsite centre in Liverpool. A total of 1,055 candidates were tested by the IELTS centres during the year. The centre was audited by the British Council with a positive overall conclusion: The Bangor English Test has continued to generate a good stream of enrolments for the university. The tests were delivered in China, Sudan, Kuwait and Bangor to a total of 149 students. 115 of the candidates were approved for meeting Bangor’s entrance requirements.

“Bangor University is a stable IELTS operation, run by a dedicated team of IELTS staff with a strong knowledge of IELTS procedures. The centre is defined by an excellent approach to customer service and a willingness to accommodate candidates urgently needing to take a test.” British Council Audit Report
