Spectacular, historic, connected. Situated on the north coast of Wales, Bangor has both mountains and beaches on its doorstep and is an idyllic backdrop to student life. Bangor is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty just outside of Snowdonia National Park; the city boasts dramatic views across the sparkling Menai Strait to the stunning Isle of Anglesey. The city is just two hours by train from Liverpool, and two and a half hours from Manchester. Both are major UK cities with international airports and excellent links to the rest of the country. London is just over three hours away. Ireland is also easy to reach, with regular ferries running from Holyhead, on Anglesey, to Dublin. The ancient St Deiniol’s cathedral sits at the heart of Bangor. There’s also a Victorian pier extending into the Menai Strait, as well as three world heritage castles within half an hour of the city. Average summer temperatures are 15-20 degrees, while the city’s coastal location means it enjoys slightly warmer winter weather than the UK average.

COMMON MODULES FOR ALL IYZ PATHWAYS As well as modules unique to your specific pathway, you will also study several modules common to all pathways. These modules are: English for Academic Purposes/ English – Advanced English for Academic Purposes aims to improve your English skills to help you with life and study in the UK. You’ll learn the critical importance of English Language competence in an academic context and prepare for continuing academic study at Bangor University. The advanced version of this module helps those who want to join programmes requiring a minimum of 6.5 IELTS. The advanced module mirrors many of the components of English for Academic Purposes, but is taught at a higher level of English. UK Government and Society Providing an introduction to government and society in the UK, this module explores how Britain has changed and developed since 1945. You’ll learn the main features of British democracy, the crown, Parliament, cabinet government, devolution, local government and the role of the civil service. The module also introduces you to the key features of British society and changes that have taken place in recent decades around issues of class, ethnicity, gender, rights and obligations, as well as considering how Britain relates to, influences and is influenced by the wider world. Information Technology and Communication Skills In this module, you’ll focus on appropriate means of communication in academic work and developing a foundation in computing and IT skills that will enable you to be successful in your undergraduate studies. You’ll become familiar with the conventions of academic discourse and writing, and learn to avoid plagiarism and poor academic practice. You’ll also develop skills in word processing and spreadsheets to ensure you submit assignments appropriately, as well as using PowerPoint to deliver more effective presentations. 18

Management Studies In this module, you’ll receive a basic introduction to the study of business and management. You’ll learn the different types of businesses and organisations, as well as how to finance a start-up. The module also illustrates different approaches to management and explains decision-making processes. It will give you an appreciation of the current business context and the challenges facing managers today.

Mathematics for Business and the Social Sciences In this module, you will learn the maths skills expected of you at degree level. It covers essential mathematical language, notation, conventions and units, as well as developing your algebraic skills and introducing you to basic statistical concepts, topics and methods. Microeconomics Providing a basic introduction to the study of Microeconomics, this module introduces relevant theories, concepts and terminology as well as explaining key topics such as demand and supply, the economic problem and the allocation of scarce resources. You will look at different models and the importance of economic decisionmaking, the effects of government intervention and theories around elasticity, specialisation, productivity, economies of scale, public goods, merit and demerit goods, and monopoly.

ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE Covering the major mathematical and scientific principles, this programme gives you a great start in engineering and computing. With a heavy focus on maths, physics and programming, you will deepen your understanding of these subjects during your foundation year. After finishing the course, you will continue your studies in either our School of Computer 22

Science where you will obtain a BSc degree that is accredited by the British Computer Society or you will join our School of Electronic Engineering with its range of specialist courses. Our BEng programmes, which are accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, can set you on the road to Chartered Engineer Status.

YOU WILL STUDY THESE MODULES: Further Mathematics This module covers complex mathematical skills and knowledge, such as: algebra, including partial fractions and inverse functions; the circle; trigonometry; differentiation and integration, including trigonometric, and logarithmic and exponential functions; and solving first-order differential equations with separable variables, vector and vector methods in two and three dimensions, and forces as fixed vectors.

Electricity, Electronics and Fields This module provides you with a basic knowledge of electricity and electronics, and of fields, that you will be able to apply in real engineering and computing situations. You will learn about current and charge, Ohm’s Law, capacitors in DC circuits, measuring AC, transistors and logic circuits. Fields subjects include potential energy, electrical and gravitational fields, satellite launches, measuring magnetic fields and their forces, inductance and transformers, and data analysis.

Continuing to develop your maths skills and knowledge, this module introduces you to the relationships between forces, linear motion and energy, and the conditions for the static equilibrium of a body. The main topics it covers are: vectors; forces and equilibrium; relative motion; Newton’s Laws of Motion; friction, including Hooke’s Law; and work, energy and power, including work and kinetic energy, and the conservation of mechanical energy.

Mechanics

Problem Solving and Programming Introducing you to problem solving via computer applications, you’ll develop a basic understanding of algorithms and their uses, as well as gaining hands-on experience using simple software programs to solve problems. You will receive a basic introduction to the techniques of data handling and processing, and to the syntax of programming languages required for a computing degree. Properties of Matter and Waves In this module, you’ll gain a basic knowledge of atomic physics, materials, heat and gases, and oscillations and waves. There is a heavy emphasis on safe laboratory practice and procedures. The main topics covered are: properties of waves; sound; reflection and refraction; interference and diffraction;

and electromagnetic waves. You will also study materials and consider the structures of solids and liquids, and heat and gases, as well as exploring the structure of the atom, radioactivity, and fission and fusion. Pure Mathematics This module provides you with the appropriate foundation in maths skills that you need for undergraduate studies in engineering and computer science. The main topics covered are: algebra, including indices and logarithms; binomial theorem and quadratic equations; differential calculus; integration as the inverse of differentiation; set theory; and probability and experimental laws.

Database Design and Usage This module is a practical introduction to the technology and terminology around tabular data, and the construction and use of a database. You will develop a database for a given situation – for example, a simulated business using current standards and appropriate software – and use that database to identify and solve problems. By the end of the module, you will have a more advanced understanding of data processing and the construction and uses of databases.

LAW, MEDIA, PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIAL SCIENCE This broad-based pathway will give you an excellent grounding for undergraduate degrees in a variety of areas, including Media, Law, Sociology and Psychology.

After completing the first stage at BIC, you will continue your chosen degree in the School of Social Sciences, School of Law, School of Psychology or School of Creative Studies & Media. The School of Social Science is ranked in the top 10 in the UK for Social Policy and top 10 in the UK for ‘Teaching Quality’ in Sociology (The Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018). Bangor Law School offers a diverse range of undergraduate degrees, our LLB degrees are approved by the Law Society and recognised for entry onto professional vocational training. Business Functions A basic introduction to the study of business and management, this module introduces the function of marketing in different types of businesses and organisations. HOW TO APPLY Applying with us is easy. As a prospective student you need to complete the application form and return it to your local representative. The application will need to include copies of all relevant academic transcripts and certificates of English language qualifications.

TO START YOUR APPLICATION WITH EASE, WE WILL NEED THE FOLLOWING: Application form

Completed and signed

A copy of a valid passport

A copy of your original qualification certificate and transcripts

Certified translation

One reference

Two for Integrated Masters, one academic and one work related preferred. If work-related reference is not applicable, two academic references will be satisfactory

A personal statement

This should outline why the applicant has chosen the University, the selected course and their future career plans

Completed Immigration History

Form and any current & previous UK visas, CAS and copies of exit stamp

If non-EU and previously studied in the UK

A valid IELTS or Pearson PTE if the score is at 5.5 or above

Only IELTS taken at UKVI approved centres can be used if the score is below 5.5 in any component

Credibility interview

Not required for EU applicants

WHAT WILL HAPPEN AFTER YOU SUBMIT THEIR APPLICATION? STAGE 1: Ask questions A Student Adviser will contact you to discuss any questions you have about your application and ensure you have sent all relevant academic transcripts and certificates of English language qualifications. STAGE 2: Check qualifications We will carefully review applications and check the your academic qualifications and level of English language is suitable for entry to the chosen programme. STAGE 3: Acceptance offer Assuming the application is successful; we will your formal offer of a place. STAGE 4: Submit deposit To accept a place on the course, you will need to make a 50% deposit which includes an additional ÂŁ150 nonrefundable registration fee, to confirm your offer. STAGE 5: CAS issued Upon receipt of the 50% deposit and Pre-CAS Documents (Bank statement and TB certificate*), we will send a Certificate of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number.

STAGE 6: Apply for visa You will then need to apply for a visa if necessary. STAGE 7: Final payment Advance payment of fees will be required either prior to arrival.

APPLY THROUGH YOUR LOCAL REPRESENTATIVE Complete the application form and return it to your local representative.

STAGE 8: Accommodation Before the start of the programme we will send you details of your accommodation (if required) and a welcome pack. We will also ask for details of your flight to the UK.
